iving around nature and greenery is an important part of well-being, and many find that without access to spaces like these, both your physical and mental health can begin to decline. Especially with the previous two years of lockdowns and working from home, many have seen a reduction in how much time they are spending outdoors. Uniquely placed in the position to help millions across the country, the Canal and River Trust have made a significant contribution to improving many of the canals and rivers that run through our towns and cities, providing accessible green and blue spaces where it is needed the most. Doncaster is one of these towns where action from the trust can be seen. Located alongside the River Don, on the Sheffield and South Yorkshire Navigation is Sprotbrough Lock. Owned

L

by the Canal and River Trust, it is considered one of the prettiest sections of the navigation, with many flocking from around South Yorkshire to get a glimpse. However, this wasn’t always the case. Once grossly polluted and fishless, the River Don and adjacent canals had suffered immense physical damage, as many people exploited the environment to get their hands on some of the finest salmon in the country. Thanks to the Canal and River Trust, the River Don, as well as the Sprotbrough Lock, is now seen as a part of Doncaster’s heritage for future generations. A cornerstone of the Trust’s work is promoting how spending time beside water can increase people’s well-being, mental and physical health, and with South Yorkshire being one of the furthest parts of the country from the sea, it is important for Doncaster

residents to get their taste of life by the water. Through the charity’s work, they want to give locals who want to go for a day visit or want to have a daily stroll along the water, the chance to do so. The Trust also promote a healthier and more active lifestyle, with the wellconserved green areas a great place for locals to walk and cycle to work and school, promoting alternatives to driving or public transport. It also gives many the opportunity to become more immersed with the wildlife that Sprotbrough has to offer. The Sprotbrough Flash Nature Reserve is one of the richest wildlife sites in South Yorkshire, which the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust describing the reserve as a “mosaic of open water, wetlands, woodland and limestone grassland”. With incredible seasonal animals and flowers all year round, it is not uncommon for you to spot the brilliant

blue flash of a kingfisher whizzing past, or a blanket of early purple orchids across the ground. But all this work cannot be done without the hundreds of volunteers who work through the charity and carry out a huge range of tasks across the whole network of Canals and Rivers across the country. At the Sprotborough Lock, they have a team of Volunteer Lock Keepers who control the lock gates and assist boats through. From lock keeping to wildlife conservation, the trust is always keen to welcome new volunteers to this role, as they also act as guardians of the site, caring for it to keep it in its best condition for visitors to enjoy. Not to mention, that by volunteering for the trust you are also helping build stronger communities and build confidence by coming together and saving local areas. The trust has also done its fair share

of work when it comes to measuring how impactful their work is to the wellbeing of locals, and especially those who choose to volunteer for them. The report, which was published in April 2021, found that trust volunteers displayed higher personal wellbeing statistics than the general sample of a similar age, especially for those who are from lower socio-economic groups, are unemployed, have chronic physical health conditions, and have a lower level of wellbeing. Overall, the Trust found that volunteering is not only good for society, as it underpins the provision of delivery of many services that contribute to our quality of life such as social care, preservation of the natural environment, heritage, sport, arts and culture. It is very clear that the work that the trust does, while on the surface it might simply seem as if they are restoring and conserving the natural environment of

Doncaster and many other areas around the country, they are also making great improvements to the quality of life of many people that needs it most. Not to mention that it also helps boost the local economy of the areas that the canals and rivers lie, such as the greater Sprotbrough area, bringing local tourists to businesses alongside the water, such as The Boat Inn, and holidaying opportunities on some of the Yorkshire Narrowboats. Sprotbrough’s fantastic reputation, allowing it to have a place in the Canal and River Trust’s top 100 places to visit across the whole of England and Wales would not be possible without the work of the many volunteers across Doncaster. If this has inspired you to take the steps to become a volunteer, then head to the Canal and River Trust website – canalrivertrust.org.uk – and go to the ‘Volunteer’ page for more information.

Where’s your head at? HOW TO DRESS YOUR HEAD UP USING HOODS, SCARVES, HEADBANDS AND MORE. BY MARIA ILIFFE.

tyling outfits proves a real challenge for many people, not knowing how to take a fit from nice to stylish can be daunting. However, often this is where we go wrong, try not to over style your outfit but instead add to your head. Using a simple scarf, headband, clip or hood can help complete or completely change a look.

S

Scarves Wearing a scarf is one of the easiest ways to add an extra layer, change the style, dress up or down or alter a look, with just one item. For winter this is an especially good styling idea as it will help to keep you warm. However, with all the different shapes, sizes and colours available, scarves work well any time of the year. One way to style larger scarves, would be around your head, wrapped around or knotted on the neck and as a baggy loop over your head, this creates the image of a detached hood.

Alternatively adding a smaller scarf through your trouser belt loops as a fashion belt, will give you a chance coordinate or bring an extra pattern or pop of colour, in a subtle way.

Headbands Headbands also provide a great opportunity to bring more layers into an outfit and breathe life into an everyday and potentially overworn look. With headbands often we stick to the traditional styles, however, it’s better to think outside the box, find longer styles that cover half or all of the top of your head. Often going bigger you can change a whole look with a headband instead of seeing it as a simple or unnecessary accessory.

Clips Using hair clips, as simple as it seems, can take your hair style from a 1 to a 10.

Regardless of how long or short, dyed or natural your hair is, use hairclips to your styling advantage. Instead of imagining the usual black bobby pins, why not think about big, coloured clips matching something in your outfit. Clips can add a layer to a look and hold back your hair or fringe for example, at the same time.

Snoods/hoods A new trend seen on the runway and now being integrated into street fashion: stand-alone hoods. Adding a dethatched hood can complete or completely change a look, by giving an option for you to dress your head as well as your body. Including a hood is also great for practicality, when garments don’t have hoods it’s easy for your hair and day to be ruined by the weather. Of course knitted hood can’t protect you from a storm, but it’s great for warmth, wind and most importantly, style. Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk 19

WOMEN IN BUSINESS

Welcome, Margaret REBECCA DICKENSON’S LATEST ADDITION TO HER TEAM WILL GO TO GREAT LENGTHS TO GIVE YOU THE HAIR YOU DESIRE. f you’ve always dreamed of longer, thicker, fuller hair then dream no more, as the latest addition to Rebecca Dickenson’s Super Salon can make all your wishes come true. Margaret Parkin is a freelance hairstylist and hair extension specialist and is delighted to have recently joined one of Bawtry’s most sought-after salons. Indeed, Rebecca Dickenson is committed to offering an exceptional level of customer service, hair artistry and expertise. As well as providing cuts, colours and blow drys, Margaret’s biggest passion is hair extensions and she works with the company Great Lengths (GL) to give clients the hairstyles they have always desired. Great Lengths selects the very best quality human hair from different Indian Hindu Temples, which is donated willingly as an act of devotion. They specifically use Remy hair: it means that the cuticles in each piece of hair are aligned together and in the same direction from root to ends, as they would naturally grow from the scalp. Another important feature is that the hair has to be Double Drawn. This implies that the production process develops every extension using a selection of strands of the same length, granting that the final bundle has equal volume and length. Margaret offers GL pre-bonded extensions, tapes or volume extensions. The pre-bonded ones are Great Lengths’ most popular applications and are perfect to add length, volume or colour effects. They are the ideal solution for women who are looking for premium hair extensions with an invisible and seamless

application, lasting from 4-6 months with appropriate care and maintenance. Introduced in January 2018, GL Tapes are the response to the growing demand for adhesive extensions of Great Lengths hair quality. The tape in hair extensions are made of authentic premium hair, anchored to an extra-thin adhesive tape. They are designed to create a fuller effect and long luxurious hair thanks to a fast application. The adhesive strip is designed not to cause any tension and feels completely flat on the head. GL Volume extensions are fast and easy to apply thanks to a special thickening technology: this product is made using Great Lengths high quality natural hair which is hand sewn into the lace net and knotted. The GL Volume piece is

designed to build confidence in women suffering from hair loss and thinning or with sparse spots around the crown. Despite the recent move, Margaret is not one to rest on her laurels and continues to work towards her personal career ambitions. “I will continue to learn and grow,” she said. “I am currently working on a tiny invisible weft. It’s for clients conscious of a thinning crown area. It’s experimental at the moment but I hope to bring it to the market.” When asked is she had a particular inspiration, or if she had any advice for other would-be women in business, she added: “For other women looking to achieve their goals, look at the big picture and maintain your passion.” Great hair can go a long way too!

Let’s introduce some of the team:

Vicky Chapman

Blue Larkin

Lloyd Hayes

Vicky set up Chapman Physiotherapy when she was working full time with Doncaster Knights. Since maternity leave, Vicky has reduced her clinical caseload and is currently working Tuesday and Wednesday at Thorne Road.

Blue joined the practice in 2020 and quickly established herself as one of the busiest physios. Sadly Blue is reducing her hours in April to work closer to home but Chapman Physiotherapy are fortunate to keep her in the team. Blue has an interest in chronic pain management and acupuncture.

Lloyd heads up the strength and conditioning service, working from the onsite gym at Thorne Road. With extensive experience in professional rugby, he works with a range of clients focussing on general health and fitness through to training for a specific goal or event. No two programmes are the same. PT is £30 an hour, with discount packages available.

Jade joined Chapman Physiotherapy in 2021 and hit the ground running. Jade also works for Hull football club and trained in sports rehabilitation before undertaking her physio degree.

Lauren is an orthopaedic specialist physio at Rotherham Hospital and specialises in limb reconstruction. In her private practice, Lauren offers acupuncture, manual therapy and also holds a sports massage diploma.

Hey sugar face Do you know what sugar does to your skin and you wellbeing? It’s not sweet.. Reducing your added sugar intake is a great decision to make for a healthier lifestyle and ultimately better skin. It isn’t always easy to follow through but the benefits are worth it, as added sugar has been proven to have negative effects on your body, your skin and your energy. Sugar breaks down collagen, the substance that makes your skin look plump, youthful, and lifted. Sugar can weaken the immune system, and a suppressed immune system is bad at fighting off bacteria – bacteria clogged in pores creates pimples! Did you know about that? Sugar triggers insulin production, which triggers protein-utilisation malfunctions. Sugar acts as a kind of signal scrambler, affecting the production of the proteins and amino acids that build up collagen and elasticity. This is my pledge to break up with sugar this month, join me in sugar detox. 30 Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk

EATING OUT

A journey to Italy DA LEO IS A FAMILY-RUN RESTAURANT SERVING UP CLASSIC DISHES, STRAIGHT FROM THE OLD COUNTRY. hose TV shows that combine food and travel are an absolute delight to watch, although they do leave you feeling incredibly hungry and with a serious case of wanderlust. This year alone I’ve followed the Hairy Bikers across the north of England and America’s Route 66, Rick Stein across Mexico and, more recently, seen actor Stanley Tucci eat his way across Italy.

T

Nice work it you can get it. I particularly enjoyed the latter show, which really seemed to show the different regions of Italy in an enviable light – every dish looked simply amazing and left you feeling like you needed to jump on the next plane to experience this for yourself. Clearly this is not going to happen any time soon so why not do the next best thing and visit one of Doncaster’s best-loved restaurants,

recently credited as being in the ‘top six Italian restaurants’ in the town. Now, working on a Sunday is generally a no-no but when that ‘work’ involves heading over to Da Leo on East Laith Gate to experience the amazing food, it felt anything but. The restaurant, expertly marshalled by Mr Leo, is a family-run business and serves top quality Italian and Mediterranean dishes, from stone-baked pizzas and pasta to classic dishes. Arriving at five o’clock, we were greeted and seated in an already buzzing restaurant. Mr Leo introduced himself to us and it was easy to soak up his enthusiasm for food, explaining he was going to take us on a ‘Mediterranean journey’ with a traditional Italian dinner – he allowed us to choose our starter and mains but then the rest was left to him and his chef Andrea. Let’s just say he didn’t hold back and I’m glad the restaurant did doggy bags as we were able to take some of the delicious food home with us too. We started with a classic prawn cocktail and frittura of calamari and prawns (£7.95). Much of the seafood at Da Leo is sourced from Doncaster Fish Market and you could taste it on the plate, the prawns were lovely and firm while the

squid, deep fried and served with a wedge of lemon, was deliciously tender. Next up was the pasta course and the spaghetti frutti di mare (£14.95) continued the fine example of fresh seafood being given the chance to shine. Cooked simply in a white wine and parsley sauce with a hint of tomatoes, the fresh mussels, calamari and prawns were the clear stars of the show whilst the pasta was cooked perfectly al dente. Across the table my companion tucked into Pasta Alla Boscaiola (£11.95) was an earthy treat of Italian sausage and mushrooms cooked in a cream sauce. Translated as ‘pasta woodland style’, it certainly lived up to expectations – and

he wasn’t sharing! We’d now reached the point where Mr Leo was going to take over and take over he did - in some style. First came more of that seafood from Doncaster Fish Market, this time in the form of Insalata di mare (£7.95), a tempting combination of octopus, calamari and anchovies served in oil. I could only say it was perfect before the dishes were cleared away, along came a bowl of cozze (mussels) in white wine sauce (£6.95) and some tomato-ey king prawns (£7.95) served bruschetta style on toated Italian bread. We couldn’t help but dig in. Thinking we’d had our fill, the manager, Cosmin, joked, “pizza is on it’s way”. Our faces must have been a picture but the shock soon turned to delight when the funghi porcini (£8.90) arrived at a table. To say it’s one of the

best pizzas we had had, wouldn’t be far wrong, it was full of porcini mushrooms, deeply nutty and earthy but two slices in and the rest was going in the takeaway box - a treat for the day after. Finally, along came the most delicate seabass (£15,95), laid on a bed of aubergine and potato fritters and roasted carrot and black olives. It was just so sublime and washed down with the perfect accompaniment, a Setteanime merlot. These food/travel shows are all well and good, but there’s nothing like experiencing the real thing first-hand – the fact that Da Leo is so close to home is a bonus. The restaurant is open Tuesday to Thursday 12-10.30pm, Friday and Saturday 12-11pm and Sundays 12-10.30pm. It is closed on Mondays. Doncaster’s best-kept secret is out... HAVE YOU BEEN TO THE GLASS STRAWBERRY YET? ith spring in the air, now is the perfect time to reconnect with friends and family over coffee, cake and much more. It’s a great time to support your local businesses too. Located on Printing Office Street, opposite the new Flannels store. The Glass Strawberry is just a short walk from The Frenchgate Shopping Centre, CAST theatre and Doncaster railway station and there is plenty of parking nearby. Often considered a hidden gem, the cafe continues its slow recovery from the pandemic and is welcoming back diners with a range of tempting treats, from breakfast, brunch and lunch to afternoon tea. “Our mission is to provide an independently run, quality and sociable hub for the people of Doncaster and visitors to the area,” said owner Beverley Georgiou, who has been at the helm for almost 40 years. “We open our doors at 8am to our breakfast/brunch menu, our afternoon tea is a cornucopia of delicious delicacies and our burger and pasta menus offer a wide and tasty choice for all. “We serve families and individuals, and

with charging USB ports stationed throughout the restaurant, we can ensure we always cater for your business lunch requirements.” The Glass Strawberry is open all day, from 8am-5pm Monday to Saturday and 10am-4pm on Sundays. It’s fully licensed and places a firm emphasis on catering for all dietary needs. That means if you are vegan, vegetarian or require a glutenfree diet, Beverley and her team can cater for all your needs. You’ll even find vegan and gluten-free wines and beers too. Beverley said: “It can be difficult to

find healthy, diet-friendly food on the high street - we like to think we offer an alternative. “We’re keen to try new things and cater to a market that has had its eyes opened to different diets and ways of eating. A lot of what we make can be adapted to suit most dietary requirements if the customer informs us when ordering, whether that’s dairy-free or gluten-free for example.Every ingredient is checked and we make sure everything is prepared in a safe, compliant way.” Breakfast and brunch at The Glass Strawberry is served all day and includes everything from porridge oats, topped with seeds and berries, to American pancakes and their famous ‘Rainbow Eggs’. This diet-friendly dish features two slices of wholemeal toast, brightlycoloured salad leaves and two poached eggs. Of course, if you prefer the ‘full English’, their cooked breakfasts take some beating. For lunch you can tuck into light bites

including soup, nachos, halloumi fries and salads or go for something more substantial from their burger, pizza or pasta menu. A speciality on the menu are ‘Buddha Bowls’, which are filled with fresh salad fruit, vegetables and topped with organic seeds and fresh flowers - they take salads to a whole new level. There’s also an updated drinks menu, which includes coffee from Barnsley-based Balmforth & Co, milkshakes, smoothies and cocktails, all hand-finished and made from scratch. Any milks used in the smoothies and shakes can be substituted for dairy-free alternatives at no extra cost. During the pandemic, The Glass Strawberry’s afternoon teas proved to be a huge hit, with scores of customers taking advantage of the takeaway service Beverley offered. This service still remains but nothing beats taking afternoon tea in the pleasant surroundings of the cafe. As well as the regular version, priced £25 per person, there are also vegan, vegetarian and child

options. The afternoon teas have to be pre-booked and include finger sandwiches, hand-finished cakes, a fruit scone with jam and cream, a macaroon or eclair and a ‘glass strawberry’.You’ll have to visit for yourself to find out what this mysterious treat is but, take my advice, it’s definitely worth trying. Unlimited tea or coffee comes as standard. Beverley, who lives on a small farm holding, sources products locally where possible and will even use herbs or vegetables grown at home. “There’s a healthy aspect to a lot of our menu – not so much to other parts of it! – but we like to think we offer a good balance,” said Beverley. “Catering to the different dietary requirements is really important to us and I think is reflective of society. We encourage our customers to try these alternative dishes – sometimes they can’t tell the difference.” The Glass Strawberry are now taking bookings for their Easter afternoon tea. Give them a call or visit their dedicated website – www.theglassstrawberryafternoontea.com – to find out more. Everyone is welcome. Mai Dang was my first restaurant I opened when I was 18 years old. Six Years later, I met my husband and we decided to start a family in Doncaster. Then this gave me the opportunity to open the first Thai Restaurant in Doncaster, The Bangkok Thai Restaurant. Eat healthier and more sustainably MY FARM, YOUR FORK PRODUCES TOP QUALITY, HIGH WELFARE MEAT DELIVERED DIRECT TO YOUR DOOR. hat started off as a remedy for homesickness soon turned into a fully-fledged business for Kelly Williams and her family. Missing her Pembrokeshire roots, and after 15 house moves in 18 years, she persuaded dairy farmer husband Calvin to buy her a couple of bull calves with the intention of rearing them for meat. She named them Daniel and Charles. And Kelly didn’t stop there. Access to a seven-acre plot adjacent to their property (recently increased to 12) meant Kelly could grow the herd even further and another calf, Caramel, pigs and bottledfed lambs soon followed – and My Farm Your Fork was born. The online business, launched in November 2021, offers top quality, high welfare meat delivered frozen direct to your door. “Initially the plan was to rear our own meat and sell any surplus but within months we were selling out,” said Kelly.“Then Covid hit and people started to become more interested in where their food was coming from and were looking to feed their families on healthier, more sustainable meat.” My Farm Your Fork sells beef, pork and lamb, all of which are hand-reared on the farm, as well as chicken and gluten-free pastries such as pies and sausage rolls. “All our meat is reared slowly outdoors using regenerative principles and butchered by us so you can feed your family not only the most healthy meat but also meat that is helping rebuild our world,” added Kelly. “We know the massive difference there is between home grown meat and shop brought meat. There is no better feeling than eating meat that you know exactly how it was raised, exactly what it ate and that at the end it was quick and as stress free as possible.” The beef is reared from mainly Hereford crosses bought from Calvin’s dairy farm, so in total has just 20 food

miles from birth to sale. The Saddleback and Middle White pigs are perhaps Kelly’s biggest passion - she’s reared a few batches in the past - and they are allowed live as close to how they would in the wild as possible. They have big paddocks to run around and play in as well as dig. Suffolk cross lambs are grown big and strong off a totally grass based diet, which results in a darker meat with a more sophisticated flavour. “We have purposely chosen breeds that are slower growing so the meat has more depth of flavour and most importantly that lovely fat layer that flavours and moistens the meat during the cooking process,” said Kelly. Head to their online shop and you can buy individual cuts or, if you prefer, their meat boxes offer great value for money and include enough to feed a family for up to ten meals. If you’re thinking of becoming a more

regular customer, their Farm Club operates as a subscription service where you can enjoy the meat delivered direct to your door monthly, bi-monthly or quarterly. Each order is hand-picked by Kelly to include your preferred meat selections. They also take into account your family size, cooking preferences and likes and dislikes. There are no commitments or contracts so you can cancel any time. You can also skip an order, pause your subscription, change your order size, or cancel by simply logging into your account online. Kelly still misses her Pembrokeshire roots but, with My Farm Your Fork, has plenty to keep her busy until that final move becomes a reality. GARDENING

Spring guide to gardening WHETHER YOU ARE AN AMATEUR OR A SEASONED PROFESSIONAL, NOW IS THE BUSIEST TIME OF THE YEAR FOR GARDENING, AND THE NEED TO PREPARE IN ADVANCE IS CRUCIAL. HERE ARE SOME TOP TIPS TO MAKE SURE YOU ARE ON TOP FORM THIS SPRING. BY TAMZIN KRAFTMAN.

Mow the lawn You might have been avoiding this task during the winter but cutting the grass can really neaten up your garden, and make it a more inviting place during the summer months.

Get rid of weeds As the weather becomes warmer, your garden will start to become more alive again. You might start to notice the dreaded weeds that were hiding under snow and frost. It is best to get rid of them as soon as possible.

Preparing soil This step is crucial before your planting endeavours begin. Adding organic matter in the form of compost and aged manure is the best way to prepare your soil, ensuring that it is as fertile as possible.

Popular flower varieties to grow While preparing your garden for the spring is essential, why not prep for summer too by ensuring that your garden is colourful in time for the warmest months? Daffodils

★ They come in a variety of colours: orange, white, yellow, orange-red and salmon. ★ They also need full sun and welldrained soil to survive. Hyacinths

★ They bloom in a range of colours, 40 Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk

such as white, pink, purple, blue, red, yellow and soft orange. ★ Bulbs will rot in excessively wet soil and growth will be stunted in very dry soils.

★ They will not flower in shade. Tulips

★ They grow well in soil rich in organic matter. ★ Most grow in an open position full sun, although some tolerate partshade. ★ They are ideal for growing in rock gardens. Pansies

★ One of the best flowers to plant during the spring. ★ Usually placed in containers. ★ They need to be planted in the sun or a spot partly in the shade in well-drained soil.

GARDENING

Popular vegetables and fruit to grow in your garden With the pandemic causing everyone to spend time a lot of time at home, more and more people have started to use this extra time to hone their gardening skills and grow their own food. If you’re thinking of giving it a go this spring, April is the perfect time to get started as it gives your fruit and veg plenty of time to grow. Focus on how much space you have in your garden; this will tell you what you can grow. If space is limited, think about buying ‘dwarf selections’ or ‘patio’ vegetables.

Veg Carrots

★ Best grown in the open ground and in hot weather. ★ If the foliage starts wilting, water the carrots every ten days. ★ Make sure you weed before planting; if you let weeds grow, they could overcrowd the carrots. ★ Be careful when weeding that you don’t crush the foliage, the smell can attract carrot flies, which can lay eggs. Putting a barrier over the carrots can prevent this. Cucumbers

★ Best grown in a greenhouse but can

be grown outdoors in a sheltered and warm area. ★ If growing in a greenhouse, you must water little and often to keep the potting compost or soil evenly moist. ★ You can train the main stem up a vertical wire or cane by pinching out the growing point when it reaches the greenhouse roof. ★ It’s important to use sticky traps, to catch whiteflies from excreting ‘honeydew’ over the plant. Lettuce

★ Lettuce is seen as one of the easier vegetables to grow and can be sown throughout the year if it is protected against the cold. ★ Once the young plants have grown, they can be thinned out and added to salads, or you can wait for the firm heart to form. ★ Snails and slugs are a common problem for growing lettuce but can be controlled through eggshell barriers, copper tape, and biocontrols. Potatoes

★ After the potatoes have been planted and the stems are 23cm high, it is essential that you start ‘earthing up’, dragging soil up covering the stems to produce a 15cm high range. ★ ‘Earthing up’ is essential, it protects developing potatoes from a substance called light. Light potatoes are green in colour and are poisonous.

Fruit Citrus

★ While limes and grapefruits might not survive a British summer, lemons and kumquats are a gardener’s favourite. ★ These can be grown outdoors in the summer in pots, and need regular feeding and watering. ★ Once full grown, they can be left on the tree until needed. Tomatoes

★ Tomatoes are ideal for growing in containers, either outdoors in a sunny spot, or in a greenhouse. ★ They need to be sowed in early spring and are widely available from garden centres. ★ After initially potting a few together in a small pot, you will need to move them to individual pots. ★ Regular and consistent watering is crucial to avoid blossom end rot and tomato splitting which may result in mould. Strawberries

★ Strawberries are perfect to grow if you are tight on space, as they grow in containers, and even in hanging baskets. ★ They need planting in early spring with a high potassium general fertiliser, such as Vitax Q4. ★ If squirrels or birds are a problem, protect fruit with a wire mesh or a net.
