GasLamp Brasserie & Bar Recently opened, the aim of Gaslamp Brasserie & Bar is to create a place like no other, offering a wondrous selection of food and drink in a truly unique setting. Gaslamp Brasserie & Bar is on the site of Rotherham’s first gaslamp, which brought light to Bawtry Road from 1927. The gaslamp is a permanent feature of Bawtry Road once more as they look to fuel good times and light up the night. Festival fun IT’S ONE OF THE STAND-OUT EVENTS IN THE RACING CALENDAR... HERE’S WHAT TO EXPECT AT THIS YEAR’S WILLIAM HILL ST LEGER FESTIVAL. Images courtesy www.andrewkellyphotography.co.uk
his September, be sure to experience Yorkshire’s Classic at the St Leger Festival, hosted by Doncaster Racecourse. Teeming with food, music and fashion throughout the four-day celebration (as well as top-class horse racing, of course) this event is one of the biggest of the year in Yorkshire’s social calendar, and you won’t want to miss it. The William Hill St Leger Festival runs over a four-day period, between 11 and 14 September, and each day offers a new and unique experience for racegoers to enjoy. The festival ends on a climax with the iconic Leger Stakes – the classic horse race that has played a central role in Yorkshire’s history since its establishment in 1776. 2018 saw trainer Aidan O’Brien take the top prize for the sixth time in the festival’s history, when his horse Kew Gardens romped home. Visitors can experience the Champagne Lawn, cheer the sporting action from the Grandstand, enjoy fine dining in the Lincoln Restaurant or visit the elegant trackside Club 1776 Restaurant marquee. Regardless of the tickets you purchase, all visitors are guaranteed to have an outstanding time. The fun doesn’t stop there, though, because after the racing there’s also brilliant live entertainment and music, ensuring that there’s never a dull moment for Festival visitors. Here’s a closer look at what’s happening across the four days.
T
Leger Legends Day
DFS Ladies’ Day
(Wednesday 11 September) The opening day of the St Leger Festival sees retired professional jockeys return to the saddle for St Leger Legends Day, first run in 2010. The jockeys participate in a charity race, and the money raised is donated to Doncaster’s Northern Racing College and Jack Berry House, a rehabilitation centre for injured racers. Leger Legends Day is a perfect opener to the festival, so head down to Town Moor to see some familiar faces and to support this worthwhile cause.
(Thursday 12 September) Brimming with glitz and glamour, the DFS Ladies’ Day is a wonderful occasion to dig out your best dresses and heels as visitors compete to win the crown for the Best Dressed Lady. The winner of the competition will then go on to represent Doncaster Racecourse at the final of Yorkshire’s Best Dressed Lady in October 2019. On Ladies’ Day there’s also the Silk Series Final race, specifically designed for female jockeys. Both the 2017 and 2018 races were won by Megan Nicholls, daughter of jockeyturned-trainer Paul Nicholls. The event is known to attract over 15,000 people each year from all over the country, so make sure you bag yourself a spot at Doncaster Racecourse to experience this unmissable day of racing and live entertainment after the races, featuring a DJ set from Spice Girl Melanie C, and refreshments.
The excitement doesn’t end after the racing has finished; you can also catch DJ sets from Spice Girl Melanie C on Ladies’ Day and Kaiser Chiefs’ Ricky Wilson on Gentleman’s Day 22 Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk

Gentlemen’s Day
St Leger Day
(Friday 13 September) Similar to Ladies’ Day, St Leger’s Gentlemen’s Day is a sophisticated and stylish day for chaps who want to don their sharpest suits for the chance to win the award for Best Dressed Male, as well as for those who wish to simply enjoy a day out with their friends and family. Taking prime position is the Doncaster Cup horse race – the oldest and one of the most exciting races run under the Rules of Horse Racing. After the thrill of the race, enjoy the live DJ set from Kaiser Chiefs’ Ricky Wilson whilst tasting the delicious food and drink on offer around the racecourse. For the best view of the Doncaster Cup (or any of the races run throughout the festival), book a place in the County Enclosure, which allows you full access to all areas of the course so you feel like the ultimate VIP.
(Saturday 14 September) More than 250,000 visitors flock to Doncaster for the St Leger Festival, and the grand finale is undoubtedly the St Leger Stakes. The world’s oldest Classic horse race is open to three-year-old thoroughbred colts and fillies. But there’s also a full programme of top-class competitive sporting action throughout the day with races such as the Group Two Champagne Stakes and the fast-paced and competitive Portland Handicap Sprint. In addition to the thrilling races, which always add an element of anticipation for the crowd at Doncaster Racecourse, the William Hill St Leger Festival is a fantastic social occasion complete with fashion, live entertainment, food and drink, making the entire four-day event all the more enjoyable and unforgettable.

Centre of excellence
THERE’S PLENTY OF REASONS TO CELEBRATE AT THE NATIONAL HORSERACING COLLEGE, WHICH CONTINUES TO PROVIDE QUALITY TRAINING FOR THE INDUSTRY. he Doncaster-based centre of excellence for training in the horseracing industry has changed its name to a title that better reflects the reality of its coverage in recruitment and placement. The decision has been made to coincide with the College’s 35th anniversary. Gerry Sutcliffe, chairman of the College trustees, explained: “The site at Rossington Hall, which opened as the South Yorkshire Apprentice Racing Training School on 1 July 1984, has operated under several names, most recently as the Northern Racing College since 1995. “We believe that the time is now right to take another step forward by adopting a title that more accurately reflects our recruiting and delivery throughout Britain, as well as our standing in the horseracing industry and the quality of our offer to prospective learners.” College chief executive Stephen Padgett added: “Initially the focus of the College’s recruiting and the employers with which it worked were relatively local. Over time the scope and scale of its work expanded nationally and its standing in British horseracing matured. “However, the title of Northern Racing College has caused a certain amount of confusion and perpetuates some misperceptions about our role. The facts are that the College recruits and

delivers top-class training to people of all ages from all parts of Britain. “Our purpose is to provide training for the horseracing industry and our activities are not confined to the North of England. With that in mind, the board has taken the logical step in the College’s progression by adopting a title, the National Horseracing College, which better describes the reality of our objectives.” The new name will go live in emails and on the internet shortly. The official change-over will take place on 1 August, Yorkshire Day, and will be completed on 11 September to coincide with the running of the Leger Legends raceday at Doncaster, from which the College is one of the charity beneficiaries. The National Horseracing College (NHC) will continue to host an
extensive range of courses leading to career paths in the horseracing industry, and provides qualified stable staff, with particular emphasis on placements in racing stables based throughout the UK. It is primarily funded by the horseracing industry and Government funding agencies, but is a registered charity and relies on additional income streams to support the residential and work-based training programmes throughout the year, and for the redevelopment of facilities necessary to enable the College to meet the demand for existing courses and extend the range of residential courses it can offer. For more information on supporting the college with fundraising and sponsorship please contact the Fundraising Manager, Philippa Bonham 01302 861007.

EATING OUT
Worthy destination NOT ONLY IS EDWINS A REAL GEM FOR LOCALS, IT SHOULD BE EMBRACED BY THOSE FAR AND WIDE, WRITES RHIANA HUGHES. hen it comes to dining out in Hatfield, locals aren’t presented with too much choice. Aside from the popular takeaways and pubs, there aren’t many restaurants deemed worth staying at home for, with many choosing to take the short drive into Doncaster for a bite to eat instead. Growing up in a small town myself, I understand why at times there’s nothing better than getting out. But if I’d been lucky enough to grow up with a restaurant like Edwins on my doorstep, I’m not sure I’d feel the same. Edwins’ exposed bulbs and bare brick walls screamed contemporary industrialism, while their comfortable booths gave the eatery a much more laid-back feel. The menu was surprisingly modern too, with hearty home favourites presented alongside new and exciting dishes you might not expect to find in a small local restaurant. Even their drinks menu offered something different, as where I’d usually head straight for the wine list, I found myself impressed instead by their list of mocktails, ordering the raspberry, passionfruit and lemon cooler (£3.50).

Short, sweet and refreshing, it was the sort of drink you could imagine yourself sipping poolside in the sun. Our starters were less influenced by summer holidays and more by alfresco dining on the streets of Italy. Meatballs (£5.95) covered in rich and flavourful marinara sauce were an easy pick for my partner, while the Parma ham bruschetta (£5.50) was a delicious start to the meal for myself. For our main courses it was comfort food all round. I ordered the hot roast beef sandwich (£7.95), a generous amount of pink-in-the-middle beef served on crisp sourdough bread with a mouth-wateringly meaty gravy on the side. Opting to add fries (£2 supplement), it was the perfect meal with which to end the day, and would be a great lunch for two looking to share. My other half couldn’t resist the look of their build-your-own-style beef burger (£9.95), choosing to add cheese, bacon and an egg (all +£1) to his toasted brioche bun, with onion rings and skinny fries somehow finding their way across the table to my pot of gravy… The tables were turned when our desserts hit the table, however. His salted
caramel chocolate torte (£5.25) was too good for me to keep my hands off, but there was no way I was letting him near my sticky toffee pudding (£5.25). Sweet and sticky – as it should be, the pudding sat in a puddle of delicious caramel ice cream, but it was yet another course that didn’t last too long on the plate. It wasn’t until we headed back to the car that we noticed Edwins have rooms available, and a quick nosy on the website once we’d reached home cemented in our minds that not only is Edwins a real gem for locals, but with somewhere to rest your head after a hearty meal, it should also be embraced by those far and wide. The team at Aagrah Doncaster, including Liquat Ali (centre) and ‘Tiger’ (second from right)
Tiger feat AAGRAH DONCASTER OFFERS THE PURR-FECT INTRODUCTION TO INDIAN CUISINE. t was definitely a first for me. After all the years reviewing restaurants, and eating out in general, I don’t think I’ve ever come across a waiter called ‘Tiger’. A nickname clearly, but as someone who has worked with owner and executive chef of Doncaster’s Aagrah, Liquat Ali, for 36 years, he’s clearly earned his stripes in the restaurant trade. Anyone who has visited restaurant on the Great North Road will have no doubt come across this funny and engaging chap who goes out of his way to make you feel at home. He was on point throughout the evening making a busy Tuesday night memorable for more than just the food, which was excellent by the way. For the uninitiated, the Aagrah Doncaster is part of a 12-restaurant chain of northern restaurants set up by Mohammed Sabir and Mohammed Aslam in 1977. They’ve recently been voted Best Asian Restaurant Group, North of England at the Asian Restaurant Awards in Manchester where Liquat Ali also picked up a Lifetime

Achievement Award. This Doncaster branch has been open for 23 years and was the chain’s first purpose-built restaurant. The fact that it was so busy on the evening of our visit is testament to its success. And so to the food. Sharing a bottle of large Cobra beer (£5.70, 660ml), we crunched through a couple of poppadums (95p each) and a pickle tray (£2.50) before making our choices. To start, we settled on a sizzling Tandoori mix for two (£9.95), a fragrant and flavoursome platter of seekh kebab, lamb chops, chicken tikka, chicken bihari wings and machli (cod) masala served on a bed of fried onions and peppers. To follow, Karahi lamb (£11.95) was deliciously tender with the combination of garlic, ginger, onions, tomatoes, coriander, lime and chilli giving the sauce a real depth of flavour and a subtle amount of heat. My king prawn Hyderabadi (£13.95), one of the restaurant’s award-winning dishes, was a milder, creamier affair, with a sauce made from cream, yoghurt, tomatoes, cardamom and cloves. A plain
nan (£2.70) and pilau rice (£2.85) were more than worthy accompaniments to mop up the delicious sauce. Full to the point of bursting we declined the offer of dessert, although Tiger tried his best to convince us otherwise. We left the restaurant with smiles on our faces, largely thanks to the fantastic service we received, but the food left a lasting impression too. If you’re on the prowl for a quality Indian restaurant, this award-winner could be just what you’re looking for. Dinner winner THE OLD WEIGHING ROOM MAKES A BIG IMPRESSION ON CHRIS WILSON. f you’re looking for a restaurant that makes a big first impression look no further than The Old Weighing Room situated on the grounds of Doncaster Racecourse. The setting alone, with views across the race track, makes this one of the few dining establishments in the region with an instant impact. Even when there is no racing, the sight of the vast swathes of green turf has a grandeur all of its own. Then there’s the venue itself. While Doncaster Racecourse itself has benefitted hugely from modernisation over the years, The Old Weighing Room lovingly preserves the past with classic architectural design features from the 1920s era. If you want to channel your inner Gatsby, this is the place to do it. The menu is inventive and seasonal, changing four times a year. We visited on a gloriously sunny evening in early July, just in time to sample the new summer menu and with perfect weather to sit on the terrace sipping sparkling rose Spumante (£5.95 per glass) and making our food choices. This was easier said than done as the menu is sprinkled with interesting food combinations. For starters we settled on the light and refreshing melon terrine (£7.25), a tasty and colourful combination of melon, cucumber and a tangy feta and fennel mousse. Equally
I
42 Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk
inventive and just as tasty, was a hearty bowl of pea and roasted garlic soup (£9.50) served with a sprinkling of scallop tartare and pancetta croute. For mains I had sirloin steak with all the trimmings (£24.95). OK so steak and chips isn’t exactly reinventing the wheel, but done this well there are few dishes that pack a more satisfying punch. This was definitely a superior version of a familiar favourite. The beef was perfectly pink as requested, triple cooked chips were light and fluffy and the accompanying pickled walnut salsa verde, salted caramel onions and beer and bone marrow sauce truly hit the spot. My friend Elizabeth, whose background as a Cordon Bleu and Cordon Vert cook means she’s not easily impressed, was intrigued by the prospect of a combination of seared cod served with a chorizo bon bon, tenderstem broccoli, lemon and dill courgette and burnt butter sauce (£16.25). The fish was fresh and nicely cooked, the bonbon added a piquant counterpoint. Served on a bed of lentils, this was a cleverly constructed dish that was full of flavour and not too heavy. There is an excellent wine list including a good choice available by the glass. Rioja Crionza (£9.50 per large glass) was a fine and full-bodied accompaniment for the steak while the
zesty Riverstone Ridge Sauvignon Blanc (£9.80 large glass) was ideal with the fish. Portions are sensibly sized so by the time the dessert menu is offered it still seems like a treat. Liquorice poached pears (£6.25) sounds like a bold combination of flavours but the taste was very subtle with only the slightest suggestion of the black stuff on the back of the tongue. Served with a sable biscuit and very sweet milk and honey ice cream it looked a treat and finished off my meal in some style. Likewise Elizabeth’s white chocolate mousse (£5.95) with mille feuilles, raspberry and elderflower jelly was another delicately sweet treat. With latte (£2.50) and cappuccino coffees (£2.50) to follow we felt like we’d backed a winner. VISIT BAWTRY
FROM CELEBRITY TO SUMMER FUN, HERE’S WHAT’S BEEN HAPPENING IN TOWN.
Summer of success
Library donation
Robinsons of Bawtry is enjoying a summer of success with its most successful summer season to date. It has seen one of its SS19 ladies dresses outsell its previous bestseller – the Moschino Piano Dress from its AW14 collection – by nearly double. “The Polo Ralph Lauren sleeveless, pleated midi dress has been a huge hit this season and our customers have loved its bold and bright colour features resulting in us having to place many repeat orders,” said Wendy Jones of Robinsons. “When our ladieswear manager Laura wore the dress to work one day we even had two friends come in and both left with the same dress – in fact the last two we had in stock.” In addition to the success of the boutique’s clothing brands, Mulberry has also enjoyed a huge spike in sales with customers preferring the individual retail experience. Furthermore, the launch of AppToPay has made a significant difference to the buying power of its customers and resulted in the ladieswear department having their most successful June ever since the Jones family took over the helm at Robinsons of Bawtry over ten years ago.
McCarthy and Stone, the developer behind the new William Bradford Court Retirement Living development on Tickhill Road, has donated £350 to Bawtry Community Library. The library has used the funds from McCarthy and Stone to purchase a beech finish table, which will be centrally positioned in the library and used to display newspapers. Additionally, a five-shelf bookcase has been purchased to display and organise the library’s ever-growing book collection. Bawtry Community Library, situated just off of Doncaster Road, is a thriving and successful community venture offering the usual library services along with public computers and internet access, printing, photocopying, daily newspapers and a second hand book shop. It also hosts community groups and is a place for local people of all generations. Liz Green, regional sales and marketing director at McCarthy and Stone North East, commented: “We were delighted to be able to support the Bawtry Community Library with this donation. A number of our homeowners often visit the library, which is just around the corner from the development, are excited to see the updated facilities but we hope the donation will go some way to helping attract new visitors as well.”

EATING OUT
A happy Ship NATALIE HIGGINS FEELS RIGHT AT HOME AT THIS BAWTRY WATERING HOLE. here’s something so warm and welcoming about The Ship at Bawtry, it just makes you feel relaxed and at home as soon as you step through the door. We were greeted, shown to the lounge and seated by the window, noticing the model ships placed around the pub. After plenty of time looking over the wideranging menu and taking on board recommendations from waitress Erica, I decided to order the homemade chicken liver, spring onion and cranberry pâté with warm toast (£4.95). The bread was crisp, but not too hard, and with the soft pâté contrasting with the sweet chutney piled on top it was delicious. My mum, Sonja, opted for the creamy garlic mushrooms (£4.95) and commented on how sometimes this particular dish can sometimes be overpowering, but not this time. It was lovely and creamy and enough to be classed a meal in itself. Sonja also loved the pâté. Looking around the pub it became clear that we were not alone in being offered extremely generous portion sizes – despite this, it didn’t stop the plates from returning to the kitchen empty!

Service could not have been more attentive with staff flitting between tables to make sure drinks were topped up and meals were to satisfaction. Our eyes certainly appeared bigger than our stomachs when the mains arrived. Sonja opted for the curry of the day, Thai green curry with boiled rice and naan bread (£10.95). She approved of the mild and creamy consistency, with succulent pieces of chicken and loads of green vegetables to give the meal a bit of crunch. I went with the stuffed pork loin filled with sundried tomatoes and chorizo served with homemade red wine gravy and a portion of chips (£11.95). You could also have the meal with new potatoes, jacket potato, or fresh vegetables. The pork was tender and tasty, and paired with the hint of spice from the chorizo sausage it really gave the dish a good kick. I sometimes struggle with spicy food, but the heat was pretty much spot on for my liking. We had made as big a dent in our main courses as possible, but eventually had to admit defeat. When waitress Toni collected our plates and asked if we were happy with them, which we obviously
were, we mentioned how the portions got the better of us, to which she laughed and replied: “Even I have to order the kid’s plate when I have a Sunday lunch!” I’ll remember that for next time and while the dessert menu looked tempting, particularly chocolate fudge cake, we both had to reluctantly decline. You can certainly tell from the way the staff interact with customers that this is a very family-friendly pub with an incredibly welcoming atmosphere from the minute you walk through the door. It prides itself on hearty homemade dishes and the menu is so wide- ranging there are options for everyone. A happy Ship? Absolutely. ROAD TEST
Sporty new look PHOEBE SEYMOUR SENSES AN AIR OF SOPHISTICATION ABOUT THE NEW MG3. ith sporty, stylish and distinctive looks, MG’s range of cars has captured the hearts of countless admirers going back over nearly 100 years. The designs may have changed considerably over the decades, but when you get behind the wheel of a modern MG, it’s clear that the iconic octagonal badge still represents something extra special. This certainly proved to be the case when I booked in for a test drive at Eric Stead in Ecclesfield to take the new MG3 for a spin. Like the MG itself, Eric Stead has a long and established reputation. It is one of the oldest motor dealerships in the area, having opened in 1962. As such, all of the staff at this family-run business have a great depth of knowledge about the models on offer. You’ll even find a couple of gorgeous vintage MGs when you visit their showroom. Sales executive, Dave Hall, handed over the keys before familiarising me with the new features inside. I’d been given the Exclusive MG3 in Ruby Red, which comes with all the same features as the Explore and Excite models in the range, plus some added extras including sports seats, cruise control, reversing camera with dynamic guide lines, Apple

CarPlay™ and DAB radio with USB connection for smart phones. Though a truly modern car, from its LED lights to its adherence to the Euro 6 Emissions standards, there is an element of simplicity that I really liked. The controls are straight forward and I breathed a sigh of relief to see that the handbrake was in fact a handbrake and not a button. Before I knew it, I was zipping down the road easily weaving between parked cars and effortlessly climbing through

the gears. Though compact on the outside, this car is something of a Tardis, with plenty of leg room in the back and a spacious boot on the inside. With a high and comfortable seats, it would be perfect for a long drive too. Now driving down Stocksbridge Bypass, I was able to really put my foot down. And even at high speeds it’s a smooth, and yes, really fun drive. Once I’d reached the Langsett Barn carpark, I was able to try out the parking assist technology, with its helpful guidelines and beep as I neared the curb, before returning. I was sad to give the keys back to Dave, and when he asked how it had gone, I couldn’t help smiling from ear to ear. The new MG3 did exactly as it had promised; it had given me an enjoyable drive in a stylish (inside and out) car. And with zero percent finance, the option to spread repayments over five years with a 20 per cent deposit and a seven-year warranty, I know many people will learn to love this car.
