Modernise your home and garden

The new office with the Knaresborough viaduct splashback

WHETHER IT’S IN THE FORM OF A STAIRCASE, BALCONY, BALUSTRADE OR BI-FOLD DOORS, NOTHING MAKES A STATEMENT IN THE HOME QUITE LIKE GLASS. f you’re looking to give your home - or garden - a contemporary makeover then the introduction of glass can really add the wow factor. Whether that’s in the form of a staircase, balustrade, bi-fold doors, kitchen splashback, balcony or even walk-on glass flooring, it can add an extra modern dimension that you don’t often get with more traditional materials such as wood or metal. No-one knows this better than Paul Dale, who set up Glass Solutions 12 years ago. “I worked for a glass merchant as a glass cutter for eight years before setting up Glass Solutions,” he said. “I’ve always been creative and wondered where all the glass would end up when we’d made it. So I started to take an interest and set up a bespoke glass installation company.” Glass Solutions cover the whole of

Yorkshire - Paul is constantly on the road supplying and delivering daily - and can provide feature glass staircases, staircase renovations, glass balustrades, balconies, windscreens and bespoke glass projects. It’s a real family business too; Paul works alongside his wife, sister and

brother as well as a dedicated team of engineers and joiners. A glass staircase is incredibly versatile and when teamed with an oak base and handrails can work perfectly with any décor. “I get huge satisfaction in bringing

old staircases back to life using oak and glass, we get a huge reaction, “ added Paul. “Adding oak newels and rails alongside really does give a contemporary look but also a nice contrast of colours to the areas. Some believe you have to remove the whole staircase but you actually don’t. It’s easier to do than you think.” Glass staircases are usually installed much easier, quicker and simpler compared to that of a normal staircase. Glass panels, in a glass staircase, usually attach using brackets. In some instances, the base and handrails will feature a groove which enables the panels to slot in. “We can renovate any staircase to a modern or traditional design,” said Paul. “Our standards are high and to ensure

we meet the highest level of workmanship our family business skill set consists of qualified joiners and engineers. “Our renovation service is a quick, mess-free way to achieve the look of a brand-new staircase. We only use the best materials and fittings to ensure we achieve the best results.” Due to light being able to pass through, a glass staircase is a great option if you’re looking to keep as much natural light in the room. Additionally, you will also be able to benefit from the surrounding view. If you have a smaller space to work with, a glass staircase will give the illusion of extra space, especially if you choose clear glass panels. Balustrades are barriers that go around the edge of a designated area, such as a balcony or staircase, to make it safe. The options and products Glass Solutions offer include, frameless glass designs, Juliet glass balconies, decking glass, glass walls and windscreens, and stainless steel and glass. Toughened glass balustrades used in glass staircases are incredibly strong and durable. Due to this strength and durability, a glass staircase needs little maintenance and should last for years to come. They are also easier to clean than wood staircases. Whilst staircases and balustrades are Glass Solutions’ most popular types of

installations, they also undertake bespoke projects too. Think glass walls and doors, shower enclosures, large glass replacements and glass splashbacks and mirrors. You’ll find examples of their bespoke work as well as staircases and balustrades at their new offices at Killinghall Stone Quarry just off the A61 near to Ripley. This quirky space has one of the biggest splashbacks you’re ever likely to see - the Knaresborough viaduct image measures nine by four metres! And there’s no standing still for Paul and his team as they’re constantly looking for new ways to be creative and innovative. “We are always trying to grow our skills and new ideas in the glass installation world,” he commented. “We will keep our business small and personal to ensure we stay focused on quality and not quantity.” Modernising your home and garden with glass makes a statement. Not only does it look fantastic, it can maximise the amount of light in your home, it’s easy to maintain and, ultimately, can add value to your property. From Barnsley to the Bolshoi TALA LEE-TURTON IS ONE OF JUST THREE BRITISH DANCERS TO TRAIN AT THE REVERED RUSSIAN ACADEMY, BUT WE GOT TO TALK TO HER ABOUT SHOWCASING HER SUCCESS CLOSER TO HOME. BY MAEVE BURRELL. t is every little girl’s dream to become a professional ballet dancer, to wear decadent costumes and perform in front of a crowd; but as adults we know the huge amount of hard work and discipline that comes along with this highly respected profession. Tala Lee-Turton is no stranger to the challenge of the industry, having been selected to train at the Bolshoi Academy in Russia at the age of just 16. However, we got to speak to Tala as she prepares to debut her first live production back

in her home county of South Yorkshire – the highly anticipated “dance and music experience” that will take place in Sheffield Botanical Gardens as part of the Dance in the Gardens event, and in the grounds of Wentworth House, Rotherham. Tala’s production ‘No Time Like the Present’ has involved two years of bid writing, pitching to potential corporate sponsors, bringing together an awesome and diverse team, developing the concept and planning operations. She hopes that audiences will be able to connect with

performance and feel within the very centre of it. Tala is taking her own strict training in the Russian style and combining it with a modern take in an outdoor setting in order to create an immersive experience for the audience, whilst giving her a chance to pay homage to the beauty of her homeland. “The outdoors has its own temperament – it is alive like an indoor space never can be. This challenges the creative team in that we have to harness the energy of the natural environment

and interact with it, almost like a sixth dancer!” she says. This is a daring step away from a traditional theatre setting, meaning Tala and her team will have to work harder to jump higher and embrace the unpredictability of the nature around them, though the excitement that it presents makes this worth it for her. As well as the setting, Tala feels a huge importance is placed on using a diverse range of performers who come from different backgrounds and have different skills, as the production also enables her to celebrate her South Yorkshire identity, which she says she is very proud of. “In No Time like the Present, each of the five dancers has a solo in which to communicate their inner realities to the audience,” Tala explains. “During my solo, I deliberately investigate my background as a woman of dual heritage from South Yorkshire - it is a crucial part of why I am who I am.” This will make for a thoughtprovoking and incredible performance that will resonate with viewers due to Tala’s impressive creativity, performed against an enrapturing pop-synth score. All this sounds like a huge amount of work and potentially daunting preparation, but Tala says she loves a challenge, which could be a quality she acquired when training at the most stringent and challenging ballet school in the world. Tala’s journey from Barnsley to the Bolshoi has been inspiring, beginning with joining a ballet class at four years old, “something fun to do as a hobby” she says - but Tala quickly showed talent and saw a future career in the art. “When I was 16 years old, my then dance teachers filmed and sent off an audition video of me to the Academy… I was accepted to train there from that video,” Tala recalls. Her success story should serve as an inspiration to anyone who sets their mind to something, that with hard work achievement, it is always possible. Having already achieved so much, we were interested to know what Tala will do next, since her esteemed balletic background has prepared her to take her career even further. “I have come to realise that the work I most enjoy being part of is diverse and multidisciplinary, and my ballet training has set me up well for that” she comments. She believes that “the best work disrupts and provokes” which No

Time like the Present certainly seems to, whilst still being adorned by meticulous technical ability, acknowledging and developing ballet into a more diverse and modern movement. Tala believes her South Yorkshire background has helped her develop an “alternative perspective” on classical ballet and also recognises the huge positive influence of family on her advancement as a dancer, believing that she has her Mum to thank for teaching her the fundamental lessons in life. “My Mum has been a huge inspiration for me and still is - I wouldn’t be where I am today without her,” Tala enthuses. “From her I have learnt how to work for what I believe in, how to be focused and determined, and how kindness is the most underrated but most powerful aspect of a character.” She now hopes to bring a “multifaceted female role” to life through No Time Like the Present, which no doubt will be inspired by her powerful maternal role model. Eventually, Tala would like to tour her productions nationally and internationally, which of course would be a treat for any audience to witness. The COVID-19 pandemic brought Tala’s work as a freelance dancer to a halt, but, like in much of the music and arts industry, in the absence of performance came a metamorphosis of creation. The extra time on her hands allowed Tala to sit and consider her next steps, landing on the fact that she sought more agency and independence over her work. She says: “The seed was planted during the pandemic, when live performance

was at a standstill and I was, like many folk, reflecting. “I considered the possibility that now might be time to take a risk, to grasp some creative autonomy that my career as a freelance dancer, always dancing other people’s work, had not yet afforded me. I decided to form my own production company, Tala Lee-Turton Productions, and No Time like the Present began to take shape.” Choosing to showcase the production outdoors was also inspired by the ‘new normal’ that the pandemic left in its wake, as Tala believes you cannot just stand still and stick with the status quo, you must adapt to your surroundings, and that is where true innovation comes from. This step towards running her own train must be inevitably stressful and mean a great deal of new responsibility, but Tala says she loves a challenge. “If it ever gets too much, I bake a cake and binge Lord of the Rings,” she says – which I think is something we can all relate to. We in South Yorkshire are delighted that Tala has chosen to return to her home turf for a celebration of herself and her heritage, and even more delighted that we get to see it in the form of an exhilarating, entertaining performance. Dance in the Gardens is on 24-25 August in the Botanical Gardens, Sheffield. The shows at Wentworth House will be on 19-21 August and 26-28 August.Visit https://wentworthwoodhouse.org.uk/whatson/no-time-like-the-present/ or https://talaleeturton.com/dance-in-thegardens/ to book tickets. Spread your wings GET HANDS-ON AT SOUTH YORKSHIRE AIRCRAFT MUSEUM – IT’S THE PERFECT PLACE TO SPEND THE SUMMER HOLIDAYS WRITES RICHARD ABBEY. hilst many museums keep their exhibits behind ropes or screens, South Yorkshire Aircraft Museum (Aeroventure) like to do things a little differently and actively encourage their visitors to immerse themselves in their exhibits. Quite literally. Several times a year, the museum, which is located on Dakota Way close to

Doncaster’s Lakeside, hold ‘Open Cockpit Days’ where visitors can sit inside the many aircraft and fuselages they have on display. Doncaster itself has a long history with aviation. This started in 1909 with the very first UK airshow being held at the racecourse (only the second in the world). Further air pageants, as they were called then, were held and, during the First World War, the Royal Flying Corps were based at Doncaster’s Town Moor, as well as other places in South Yorkshire, to defend against Zeppelin raids. The Airport was opened in 1934 on the site by the racecourse, which includes the area where the museum is now, as one of the country’s earliest. During the Second World War, Doncaster Airport became RAF Doncaster and expanded significantly. Two new RAF Squadrons were formed there – 616 and 271. During that time, the buildings that now sit on the museum site were built and are all that remains of the airport. South Yorkshire Aircraft Museum began life on a farm in Firbeck before moving to this current site - a former Yorkshire Water depot - in 1999. The cockpits and simulators are just a small part of the museum which is spread across several buildings and is home to 40 complete airframes as well as 60 cockpit or fuselage sections. There’s also an on-site cafe and shop stocking a huge selection of aircraft models and other aviation-related memorabilia. The museum is run solely by volunteers, of which there are around 45 – they’re all unpaid and carry out most of the work around the site. The museum is run by a board of trustees, also unpaid volunteers, and is a registered charity. This ensures that all the income from entrance fees and donations goes to improving the museum and looking after and restoring the aircraft and artefacts. Now retired, Alan worked as a bank clerk for 35 years before getting involved with South Yorkshire Aircraft Museum just over 20 years ago through helicopter restoration work. He was persuaded to become a trustee just over ten years ago and now, as chairman, oversees the general running of the museum. He’s extremely passionate about the museum and its exhibitions and doesn’t mind getting his hands dirty when it comes to restoration work. “I’ve always had a leaning towards military things,” he said. “I’m a helicopter buff and became involved with the Yorkshire Helicopter Preservation Group in 1996 when my interest developed. When they moved their helicopters to South Yorkshire Aircraft Museum, I became a volunteer.” Restoration is a huge part of the museum and the volunteers are 20 Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk

constantly working on different projects to keep the exhibits current and relevant. “It is often said ‘the workshop is the heart of the museum’,” explained Alan. “This is because, unlike many museums, most of our exhibits have been obtained in a very poor state and require a tremendous amount of work to bring them to a condition where the visitors can see what they used to be like. “As well as the actual restoration work, much work is done behind the scenes to find the ‘missing bits’ to enable projects to be completed.” Very few of the volunteers have what you might call ‘professional’ aviation engineering experience but all muck-in with the same enthusiasm. The restorations are largely cosmetic; there are many things that can be done on an aircraft that will not fly again that must not be done on one destined for flight. There are also many things that would be vital on a flying aircraft that must not be done on one which is going to be preserved and last without the servicing regime required for a flying one. The museum has several projects on the go at the moment. Firstly, the Falklands War veteran Scout is one which has had the airframe stripped back to the very bone to treat corrosion and work is underway to find any missing parts. “It will be a fitting monument to all those who served with them in the Army Air Corps when it is completed,” added Alan. Secondly, the final part of the Meteor T7, which has been on display for several years, is almost completed and ready to be attached. There are a couple of engines being worked on as well for static display in the workshop and will soon go out on display. “Personally, am working on the Dragonfly helicopter which will be finished to represent one of the RAF’s very first helicopters, when it was on duty in Malaya in the early 1950s,” said Alan. The Falklands exhibit at South Yorkshire Aircraft Museum is one of the most significant in the country. You’ll find a complete timeline of the events that occurred in 1982 as well as a host of aircraft - mainly helicopters - as well as memorabilia, paintings and messages from islanders. “It is important to the veterans, families of veterans and islanders alike that this story is not forgotten,” said Alan. “We honour those who lost their lives in the fight for freedom of choice for the islanders, and as an example to the rest of the world how important this

“We honour those who lost their lives in the fight for freedom of choice for the islanders. If it is forgotten, it could happen again.” is. If it is forgotten, it could happen again.” There is a formally dedicated Falklands War Memorial remembering the 255 British Servicemen and three Falkland islanders who died during the liberation of the Islands in 1982. The museum also has two memorial benches which have a been dedicated to local men who were killed in the conflict – Sgt Ian McKay, V.C., Pte Steve Illingworth, D.C.M. and Captain Ian (Harry) North, D.S.C. The Falklands memorials are joined by two further memorial walls in the main hangar dedicated to the two WW2 Squadrons formed on the site. 271 Squadron was the first UK based transport squadron to be formed and went on to be involved in the D-Day and Arnhem operations, amongst many others. 616 (South Yorkshire) Royal Auxiliary Air Force Squadron went on to train as a fighter squadron with Hurricanes and Spitfires with which they fought in the Battle of Britain. Summer is one of the busiest times for South Yorkshire Aircraft Museum but

work continues apace behind the scenes. As well as the continuous restorations, future plans are in place to build an additional hangar to give secure cover for the many exhibits which are currently outside. These include the Hawker Hunter, Hawker Siddely Harrier and English Electric Lightning. Is there one aircraft in particular that Alan would love to exhibit at the museum? “We are very limited for space but I personally would love to have an Apache helicopter,” beamed Alan. “The Army Air Corps operated them in Yorkshire, although not South Yorkshire.” Watch this space. Pillow talk THE LATEST ON BEAUTY, WELLNESS AND MIND FROM ISABELLA CAVALLI.

Silk = Hair Silk scrunchies are hair kryptonite. They hold benefits that support your hair through your non-existing hair routines all the way through to the most complex ones. The reason why silk is the best material for your hair accessories is that its natural, smooth texture has been found to improve the quality of hair. It prevents frizziness and reduced thinning, without forming split ends. They are known to keep your locks in form by protecting hair from breakage as it causes less friction and tension on the hair, than other materials. They also help control tangling and leave your hair feeling super soft! Get yours from Leeds based brand www.satya-and-ro.com

MUSTHAVE

Skincare musings If you’ve got blocked pores, blackheads or acne then this is the facial for you – it literally sucks out the grime. Talking from experience, this is the ultimate facial that everyone should try. If you are a male who is having issues with your skin, don’t feel shy.You won’t regret it! This is the must-have facial if you are going somewhere special and want to look radiant and fresh. I would recommend to have it done at least two days before your event. I personally look after my skin, I double cleanse every day, yet I had stubborn blackheads on my nose I just couldn’t get rid of. I heard that Hydrafacial is the one treatment that will literally suck out all the dirt - I needed to give it a try. This patented treatment is a six-step process designed to clean out pores and calm inflammation making it ideal for anyone struggling with MUSTblocked pores, blackheads or acne. TRY I had my Hydrafacial performed by Jade from Skin Doctor Clinic in York. And I will be back for more. If you have stubborn blackheads I suggest your book yourself an appointment with Jade!

Hey sugar face Do you know what sugar does to your skin and you wellbeing? It’s not sweet.. Reducing your added sugar intake is a great decision to make for a healthier lifestyle and ultimately better skin. It isn’t always easy to follow through but the benefits are worth it, as added sugar has been proven to have negative effects on your body, your skin and your energy. Sugar breaks down collagen, the substance that makes your skin look plump, youthful, and lifted. Sugar can weaken the immune system, and a suppressed immune system is bad at fighting off bacteria – bacteria clogged in pores creates pimples! Did you know about that? Sugar triggers insulin production, which triggers protein-utilisation malfunctions. Sugar acts as a kind of signal scrambler, affecting the production of the proteins and amino acids that build up collagen and elasticity. This is my pledge to break up with sugar this month, join me in sugar detox. 30 Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk

DISH OF THE MONTH

ow is it August already? Here at Leeds Cookery School we are scratching our heads wondering where on earth the time has gone. We are however, pleased that it’s still asparagus season. We are a big fan of this veg because it’s just so versatile. This is our recipe of the month which features this fantastic vegetable. Leeds Cookery School is a cookery school with a conscience because 100 per cent of their profits go to a charity called Zest who help disadvantaged communities in Leeds. They offer cookery classes and courses suitable for beginners and pros. If you want to find out more about them go to www.leedscookeryschool.org.uk

H

Dish of the month Yorkshire Asparagus & Summer Vegetable Risotto Ingredients 100g Arborio or carnaroli rice 20g butter 20ml Yorkshire rapeseed oil 1 shallot, diced 50ml dry white wine 300ml vegetable stock (boiling) 1 bundle Yorkshire asparagus 50g fresh peas, podded 50g fresh broad beans, podded ½ teaspoon flat leaf parsley, chopped ½ teaspoon oregano, chopped ½ teaspoon chives, chopped 20g freshly grated Parmesan cheese Salt & pepper

32 Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk

Method 1. Prepare the asparagus by bending the stalk at the base to make it snap. Lay the top half of the asparagus on a flat surface and peel away from the last leaf of the tip toward the base carefully. Use the peelings and woody stems in the vegetable stock. 2. Bring a pan of salted water to the boil. Add the prepared asparagus and cook for two minutes. Remove and plunge the spears into ice cold water (this will stop the cooking process and keep them a vibrant green colour). Do the same with the peas and broad beans. When cold drain the asparagus, beans and peas. 3. Cut the asparagus into 1cm long pieces. Remove and discard the husk from the broad beans and set them aside. 4. Heat the butter and oil in a large heavy pan. When the butter has melted, add the diced shallot and gently cook for two minutes. 5. Add the Arborio rice and cook for two minutes, stirring the rice until it is coated and has become translucent. 6. Pour in the white wine and bring to the boil. Reduce the heat and simmer until the rice has absorbed the wine. 7. Gradually add the hot vegetable stock, a little at a time, waiting for each quantity to be absorbed before adding more. Stir continuously with a spatula. 8. After 20-25 minutes the rice should be tender and creamy. 9. Add the beans, peas and asparagus, mix in gently. 10. Season with sea salt and freshly ground black pepper, add the chopped parsley, oregano, chives and the Parmesan. Mix well. For extra decadence drizzle with aged balsamic and authentic truffle oil.

AWARD WINNING RESTAURANT Winners of the 2019 Eastside Restaurant Awards

“I’m Chintana, most people know me as Ton. I grew up in a village not far from the city of Ratchuburi in Thailand. I started cooking at a young age and used to cook for all my family. Mai Dang was my first restaurant I opened when I was 18 years old. Six Years later, I met my husband and we decided to start a family in Doncaster. Then this gave me the opportunity to open the first Thai Restaurant in Doncaster, The Bangkok Thai Restaurant. Ten years of running a successful business, we wanted to expand and we decided to open the Bangkok Royal Elephant. Now we’re starting a new chapter by opening the only Thai Restaurant in Doncaster, Thai At The Sal.”

A Feast fit for summer (and beyond) YOU DON’T HAVE TO TRAVEL FAR TO ENJOY A BIT OF SUNSHINE. hen Julie Horseman opened Feast Hatfield in September last year, little did residents know that she was in fact bringing a little bit of sunshine to this part of north-east Doncaster. Julie, who also owns Feast Bawtry, has brought their well-loved brand of breakfast, brunch and lunch to the area but with some added extras too - namely tapas and live music. They’ve recently opened the Feast Garden too, a fantastic outdoor space in which to enjoy these delicious Spanish dishes and sounds. “Some would have considered it a gamble, us opening a second venue, especially during Covid, but we believed in the potential of the site at Hatfield,” said Julie. “We’re coming up to our first year and things couldn’t be going better. Now the garden is complete, and with the glorious weather we’ve been having, it genuinely feels like you’re on holiday.” Tapas is served four evenings a week (Wednesday to Saturday) and the menu features plenty of dishes you’ll recognise but some unfamiliar ones too. All the Spanish ingredients are sourced directly from Spain, for example, Iberico ham, chorizo and olives from Seville. The menu changes quarterly but popular new

W

dishes include Tataki Iberica - seared pork fillet with apple chutney and yuzu mayonnaise; Grilled Spanish Octopus with ginger miso butter, lemongrass sauce and salt-baked potatoes; and Sous Vide Seabass - with black olive crumb, jet black purée and mussels. If you’re more of a daytime diner, both venues have you well covered when it comes to breakfast, brunch or lunch as well as teas, coffees and an expansive range of drinks. Julie uses quality ingredients from nearby suppliers, including working with several local independent bakers to bring you a delicious range of cakes and treats. There’s an excellent range

of vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free dishes too. “We’re finding that people are coming to use specifically for our vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free dishes,” added Julie. “We cater for all dietary requirements, have a full range of alternative milks and our breads and butter are already dairy-free. We try and have something for everyone.” The daytime menu includes everything from breakfasts, sandwiches and eggs to porridge, pancakes and shakshuka. For later in the day there are sandwiches, salad bowls and bagels. “Our best-selling daytime dishes include avo and eggs, which is crushed avocado and poaches eggs on sourdough toast served with sautéed tomato and mushrooms,” said Julie. “Our Sausage Bonanza - the ultimate sausage sandwich - and chorizo hash is really good too.” It looks like you don’t have to travel far to enjoy a bit of sunshine this summer. Feast Bawtry is open seven days a week whilst Feast Hatfield closes on Tuesdays. Both venues are available for private hire if you have an event coming up. The ultimate guide to packing We know that sometimes even the idea of packing up your home and getting ready to move can be stressful. That’s why we’ve created this ultimate guide.

acking is undoubtedly one of the biggest tasks associated with moving. Often the prospect seems so overwhelming that people put if off until the last minute but starting as soon as possible is always the best way to keep stress low. Choosing your packing materials Always try and choose high quality, strong packing boxes. If you don’t have all the extras to go with your packing, it might be good to go for a moving home kit, that includes the bubble wrap, tape and different-sized boxes. If you are re-using old boxes, check that they can hold weight, and cover any previous labelling so you don’t get confused about the contents.

P

Labelling your boxes Make sure to label your items not only with the room you want them to be placed in upon arrival, but whether they contain fragile items, and which way they up should be held. Be specific with your labelling - you don’t want to have to rifle through ten boxes labelled ‘kitchen’ to find your cutlery. You could even list the contents if you have time. It’s also important to note on the box whether it contains any hazardous items, like knives, chemicals or anything else that needs to be handled with care.

Top packing tips A few general tips before we get started... • Make sure to use small boxes for heavier items, and bigger boxes for light items. Otherwise, you risk overfilling the boxes and breaking them. Pull-along suitcases are good for things like books. • Paper and bubble wrap are great for packing, but you can also make use of your clothes, towels, blankets or any other soft items to provide padding around more delicate items. • Be sure to pack heavy items at the bottom of the box, and evenly distribute them across the base, so that everything is not placed on one side, or in the centre.

Packing your bedroom When packing your bedroom, you may want to save time by making use of a wardrobe box, which would allow you to simply move all your hanging clothes, and then take them off and put them in the wardrobes at the other end. Check with your removals company if they have these available. When breaking down bedroom furniture, be sure to keep all screws and bolts together in a sandwich bag, taped to a piece of the furniture. If you want your removals team to disassemble and reassemble these items, make sure you have organised this in advance. Wrap your mattress in a dust sheet, old blanket or sheets, or you can use stretch wrap to protect it.Your bed is one of the first priorities when arriving at your new home – if you leave it until late in the day you’ll be tired and will likely get frustrated. Ensuring you get a decent night’s sleep in your new home should be a priority.

PROPERTY

Packing the living room If you’re dismantling cabinets, book cases or dining tables, you will perhaps want to lay something on the floor to protect it from scratches. If dismantling seems complicated, it may be best to hire removals professionals to do it for you. When moving your TV or other technology, it’s best if you have the original box it was delivered in, but otherwise wrap it as securely as possible. You can also discuss with your removals team if they have any special storage or packaging materials that may be helpful. If you have lots of wires plugged in to your electrical appliances, take a photo before you unplug them so you’ll know what goes where when you get to reconnecting them. If you have any potted house plants you intend to move, you will need to check this with the removals team, as some will not transport potted plants, due to the mess. If you are transporting them, place them in a plastic container and stuff the edges to ensure the pot does not move around and the plant is supported.

Packing the kitchen Always wash your hands before you begin to pack utensils and cutlery. Roll up all your items in wrapping paper and place them in the box before repeating this process for your other items. For particularly sharp knives you can purchase knife protectors to avoid injury from open blades, and a block of kitchen knives are already protected, so just wrap them securely in paper. Always hold sharp knives with the blades facing away from you and place all the knives the same way around, using two sheets of paper to double-wrap them. When packing glasses obviously wrap them with bubble wrap and be sure to place them with the widest part of the glass facing down. Reinforce any boxes, do not overload them, and clearly label them ‘fragile.’ Pots and pans can be stacked, but you may wish to put paper or bubble wrap in between some items if there is a non-stick coating that could be scratched off. When stacking plates, try not to overload the box, and you can either individually wrap the plates, or place disposable plates in between each one to cushion them. You can even buy biodegradable ones.

Packing the bathroom Be sure to clear out any out of date medicines, and use up cleaning supplies, as removals companies will not be keen to transport half-used bottles of bleach or other items that could leak. Pack linens and towels as expected, and you can use them to wrap delicate items or secure items in boxes. Be sure to leave out enough towels for your family to use when you arrive.

Packing up the shed or garage Tools need to be fully cleaned and emptied before they can be transported, and any sharp tools need to be stored in a clearly labelled box or solid toolbox. Be sure to keep the items you need to assemble your furniture to hand. Fertilisers or hazardous substances cannot be transported, so make sure you dispose of these appropriately, and don’t leave it to the last minute. Previously opened pots of paint might spill so your removals team probably won’t take them. Empty pots can be recycled, or you can donate half used pots to charity. Again, plants are often not good to be transported, so make sure you can pack them to transport yourself, or if there are garden ornaments you plan to take with you, make sure these are cleaned and appropriately protected. Also think about what you’ll need on unpacking day – having a separate box with the kettle, mugs, glasses, tea, coffee and pre-packaged snacks will make sure you’re not low on energy and you can keep going.

IN BRIEF

Summer of fun and games

Sense-ational results The Source’s Sense Of Place project has been a resounding success, engaging with thousands of people across Rotherham, helping many on their way to jobs and training and increasing pride in where they live. The six-month scheme trained up six young youth workers and sent them off to inspire young Rotherham people about career opportunities in arts, culture and entertainment as the town prepares to become the world’s first Children’s Capital of Culture in 2025. The Source’s Sense-ational six worked with ten schools and 20 organisations and connected with 2,250 people across the borough. The passion shown by Naomi Duff, Lisa Rudkin, Phoebe Williams, Armani Sadiq, Aisha Mosavi and Mya Fuller was steered by Dannielle Nixon. “We’ve had positive feedback from every organisation our six phenomenal young women worked with,” said Dannielle. There’s progression for Dannielle, too - she is now The Source’s full-time Learner and Community Engagement Officer, and feeling really positive about her new role.

Long Tunnel © The Harley Gallery, Portland Collection

Dig deeper A new exhibition at The Harley Gallery, Nottinghamshire reveals the life of the elusive 5th Duke of Portland who owned the historic Welbeck estate during the Victorian era. The 5th Duke was an unusual figure in high society, and many myths and legends have grown around his memory. These include always wearing three pairs of socks, only eating roast chicken, and communicating exclusively by letter through his bedroom door. The actual truth behind the stories is uncertain but it seems that the famously private 5th Duke was leading a fascinating life. He is best known for his building projects, which include one of the world’s largest riding schools, two-and-threequarter miles of tunnels, a subterranean ballroom and an underground donkey stable. This exhibition illustrates his life beyond the tunnels – including stories of lost love, amazing art collecting, and the creation of the landscape we see today at Welbeck. The exhibition runs until December.Visit www.harleygallery.co.uk to find out more.
