Life-changing experience CHRISTMAS HAS COME EARLY FOR ANNE KAY, AND IT’S ALL THANKS TO G&M HEALTHCARE. ith Christmas just a few weeks away many people will be contemplating a strict starvation regime in a frantic last-ditch effort to lose weight fast and look good for the holiday season. But for one lifelong yo-yo dieter, who spent decades trying and failing to reach her ideal weight, such extreme measures – which are doomed to fail in the vast majority of cases – are a thing of the past. In fact Christmas has come early for Anne Kay who reached her ideal weight of just under 11 stones in early November. BUSINESS
Shop local, support your economy SMALL BUSINESS SATURDAY, WHICH TAKES PLACE ON 7 DECEMBER, IS A GREAT WAY TO ENCOURAGE PEOPLE TO BACK THEIR INDEPENDENTS. mall Business Saturday is a grassroots non-commercial counterpart to the big retailers’ consumer events Black Friday and Cyber Monday that have worked their way into the UK shopping calendar over the last few years. Like its high-street counterparts, Small Business Saturday is a US import, but it’s a very different affair which aims to persuade consumers to spend locally in independent shops. The day itself takes place on the first Saturday in December each year, but the campaign aims to have a lasting impact on small businesses across the country, with many small businesses taking part in the day by hosting events and offering discounts. An estimated £812 million was spent in small businesses across the UK on Small Business Saturday in 2018,
S
14 Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk
according to research* commissioned by founder and principal supporter American Express; up from the £748 million spent on Small Business Saturday in 2017. Choosing to shop at your local businesses instead of the larger chain stores has many benefits and there are many reasons why you should choose your local independent business, where possible, over a large, commercial supplier. Small businesses are the backbone of our economy, the epitome of the UK high street and often large tourist attractions. But what you may not know is that shopping at a local business, rather than a large chain, is actually better for the economy of your community and to ensure a strong and sustainable local economy foundation; people need to buy locally. For many of us, we believe that the
absolute best deals can only be found online, but if you shop around you will soon find out that this isn’t the case. Independent companies can actually provide the same types of deals, if not better. So, find out what your local area can offer you first, before checking online. Although many chain businesses do provide great customer service, you can’t beat the personal touch of a local owner who knows everything about the neighbourhood. They can offer you a product that is suitable for you, your house and even your area and it is also worth remembering that local shops stock an inventory based on their own customer’s choices, rather than national fashion trends. This is so you can find what you want, rather than finding what they want to sell you.
BUSINESS
Through supporting your local businesses, you are also helping to support local entrepreneurs who may not have previously had a chance of getting their company started. Through more people choosing the smaller, local option over the larger chain businesses, it is allowing more entrepreneurs than ever before to get their foot in the door. In a world that is becoming increasingly dominated by chain stores that have been designed to look the same, the many independent businesses across our region bring much-needed originality and variety to our high streets. We hope you will join us in supporting them this Small Business Saturday on 7 December 2019. Find out more: www.smallbusinesssaturdayuk.com
Bawtry retailers calling on locals to support trade in the town this Christmas The wonderful market town of Bawtry near Doncaster has long been a mecca for shoppers who enjoy the independent shopping experience, but the advent of the internet and the ease this brings, has meant that retailers in the town are more than ever in need of support from the local community. With visitor numbers to the town declining retailers in the town want to remind people just what they offer and that without their support the town may struggle to survive which will ultimately mean your local shops will be gone. Ross Jarvie, Chair of Bawtry Retail Association, commented: “Some
businesses are beginning to consider their long-term future in the town and that is incredibly disheartening. They really do need your support so why not avoid the crowds, the chain stores, the internet and the pressure of Christmas shopping and choose Bawtry as your shopping destination. “Not only is it perfect for gift shopping you can also find Christmas food and drink treats, places to be pampered and socialise with friends and family. For more details check Facebook @visitbawtry,Twitter @visitbawtry or www.visitbawtry.com Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk 15

On the 2nd day of Christmas my true love gave to me…
Top quality ladieswear from Angi Lou Boutique oncaster couple, Peter and Angie Huddart of Branton, threw caution to the wind when they opened Angi Lou Boutique at 19 Market Place in Tickhill earlier this year. Peter, a financial adviser and Angie, a former NHS GP practice manager, soon realised their dream of owning a ladieswear boutique, having rented and transformed the former Teasdales Doncaster premises. “Having spotted a gap in the market for top quality everyday ladies wear that sits in between the high-end designer, racewear and promwear, and the mass produced throw away fashion markets, we source suppliers of clothing labels that I personally enjoy buying for myself,” says Angie. “Many of the brands we stock at Angi Lou are not available elsewhere in South Yorkshire and these brands have also been working hard to produce clothing made from sustainable fabrics.” Angie has also sourced a fabulous collection of footwear, including the highly regarded brand Ravel, which many of her customers are delighted to welcome as ‘a blast from the past’. Another brand not previously available anywhere locally is their Bugatti range of casual sports style footwear. Starting their business in the current climate; where high street brands are
D
frequently disappearing from towns and cities across the country, was “a real concern for the couple”, however once Angie and Peter had met with suppliers and fashion agents, their concerns were soon replaced by the overwhelming excitement at the clothing ranges they had sourced. Because buying for a season commences months in advance; Angi Lou’s launch has seen the intrepid duo working tirelessly to find ranges to bring the boutique just in time for the October opening. Since then, they have continued meeting with fashion agents up and down the country, pre-booking incoming stock as far ahead as summer 2020 from brands including Fransa, Ichi, Numph, Saint Tropez, b.young, Soaked in Luxury, Sundae Tee, Tensionein, Pieces, YAS, Only, Object, Eb & Ive,
Haven and Selected Femme. Angi Lou also stocks two beautiful brands of jewellery – namely Nikki Lissoni and Sparkling Jewels – both beautifully complementing their range of clothing, footwear and gifts, and offering the ability to create their own unique collections. Launch week saw customers flock to the boutique in their droves and the couple ran a special prize draw with every purchase made in-store. Tickhill resident and Rotherham United Manager, Paul Warne drew the winning ticket and we are delighted to announce the lucky front-runner was Miriam Mahon, who took home a hamper filled with goodies from the boutique. Winter is an exciting time for fashion – a chance to leave the wispy layers of summer behind and embrace chunkier textures and richer shades. If you’re in need of inspiration, Angi Lou Boutique is a chic place to start. Discover a collection of seasonal essentials that would slip effortlessly into an existing wardrobe, and dress for the colder months with newfound ease. On the 3rd day of Christmas my true love gave to me…
The gift of confidence ith Christmas on its way, ‘tis the season of festive parties and social occasions – so why not look your best? Julie Brown qualified as a registered nurse in 2006 and since then, she has continued to develop her skills and knowledge to ensure she delivers a unique and multidimensional approach to non-surgical aesthetics, from dermal fillers and microdermabrasion to CoolSculptingTM and a comprehensive range of anti-ageing treatments for the face and body. She also offers a diverse range of medical-grade skincare systems, such as those available with the renowned Obagi® and Skinade, for the improvement and retention of skin quality from within, and works collaboratively to deliver care that stimulates patients’ natural regeneration and repair and is an accredited member of Save Face UK. Right now, there’s no better time to ramp up your skincare regime and get your complexion in tip-top condition – and the effects can last for months, so you’ll be giving the treat of a gift that lasts well into the new year. If your skin is lacking that youthful glow, Face by Brown offer a number of treatments that can help you to take the first step towards a beautiful and radiant complexion. They have extensive
W
experience in assessing skin types and are passionate about designing the right combination of treatments for a variety of conditions. Recommending the very best skin care ranges that have been specially selected to prevent ageing and treat a range of skin issues, whether you are looking for a gentle re-fresh or complete resurfacing. Julie’s team of qualified and experienced beauty therapists, nail technicians and makeup artists also offer a range of health and beauty treatments, from lash extensions and lifts to microblading and waxing. “Wrinkles, lines and other signs of ageing can be daunting for many, so what better gift to give this Christmas than the gift of confidence,” says Julie. “There’s nothing like a facial treatment or body massage to ease fatigue, deepen relaxation and shift your energy to a place of beauty and wellbeing. The
simple act of taking an hour or two to unwind releases stress so you feel better and look younger this winter. If you can’t accommodate the week of downtime associated with one-off deeper peels, the Obagi Blue Radiance peel has a very low level of salicylic acid and is designed to be used in a course of four to six quick ‘low-burn’ treatments – a gentle but effective way of getting skin in tip-top shape coming up to the party season.” If you are still unsure of what to buy a loved one for Christmas, but know you would like to give them the opportunity to feel revitalised and rejuvenated in time for the new year, why not consider the range of gift vouchers available? For more information about the treatments and vouchers available at Face by Brown, get in touch with the team by calling 01709 533422 or visit www.facebybrown.com. Be sure to follow their social media accounts – Facebook and Instagram – so you can be the first to know about future promotions, procedures, and news about the clinic. A visit to bistro and wine bar, Canters anters opened its doors to the public on 20 July 2019 with the vision to create a pleasant and relaxed dining experience, making the restaurant and destination where people can enjoy delicious freshly cooked food – and all locally sourced. The vision was that of husband and wife, Margaret and Doug Dickson. “We got the keys to the building in April this year [2019] and that is when we started the complete regeneration of the building,” says Doug. “We gutted the kitchen, installed state-of-the-art equipment, upgraded the bar, changed the décor [and more] and with hard work and determination, we have transformed Canters (formally Sorrento’s) into a stylish and welcoming bistro and wine bar with a cosy atmosphere. “For us, the picturesque village of Old Cantley was really lacking in a focal meeting place for its residents and the residents of the surrounding villages – and so Canters was born.” At Canters, you’ll find homemade dishes including sea-to-table fish and

seafood, steak, chicken and vegetarian plates. Canters also cater for dietary requirements including gluten-free and vegan, and the talented team of chefs produce a tantalising list of specials daily; the most popular of which make their way onto the main menu, which changes with the seasons. The lunchtime menu features light bites such as sandwiches, scampi and pasta and the popular pork loin in Canters’ signature creamy peppercorn sauce. The new evening menu features fresh tuna steak, soy glazed salmon served with dressed noodles, slow cooked lamb belly and 30-day aged fillet steak, to mention but a few, and booking essential if looking to sample one of the famed Sunday lunches. Homemade Yorkshire puddings, made to the head chef ’s secret recipe (where only the best ingredients are used), has put Canters firmly on the map. The menu is complemented by a wide variety of gins, vodkas and other spirits, alongside cocktails from The Cocktail Pickers Club. There’s also a large
selection of red, white and rose wines, as well as prosecco and champagne. “Since opening, we are delighted to have welcomed more and more customers month on month, with many repeatedly enjoying our lunches and dinners. But not happy to sit back and rest on laurels, we continually strive to improve and introduce new ideas into the business. This include baby showers, birthday celebrations and office parties and we also have a Christmas fare menu available from 4-24 December. Call us for more details.” Canters are open from Wednesday to Saturday and serve a traditional Sunday lunch from 12pm-3.30pm on Sundays. Why not give them a try for a festive lunch or dinner, or just pop in for a coffee or a drink to warm the cockles. To book, call 01302 371832 or send a direct message via the Canters Facebook page. Timeless jewellery from Time for Diamonds hristmas is a time for giving. Nothing beats the feeling of finding that perfect gift for a loved one, especially when that gift is something as timeless as jewellery or a watch. Time for Diamonds, one of Bawtry’s real hidden gems, is the ideal destination for finding that perfect present. What started as a personal passion for watches has grown into over 13 years in the jewellery business for Time for Diamonds owner Mark Burgin. Having admired the quality, craftsmanship and style of high-end watches for more than 20 years, in 2006 Mark finally decided to turn his love for timepieces into a business. The business has gone from strength to strength with Daniel Deakin becoming a partner two years ago, since which time they have significantly increased their stock and supply of fine and vintage watches, as well as their diamond jewellery offering. From beautiful bracelets and necklaces to delicate pairs of earrings, Time for Diamonds have an extensive range to choose from, and you’re sure to find something to suit all tastes and budgets. A prime spot in the heart of the action oncaster is the ideal place to sample some of the region’s dynamic dining and social scene and it is certainly a town centred around one of its most famous attractions – the races. Because of that, when it comes to accommodation, you want a hotel that is right in the heart of the action and that’s exactly what you’ll find at The Hilton Garden Inn. You won’t fail to notice the historic racecourse and grandstand, as the hotel sits in the grounds overlooking the track and if you’re lucky enough to visit on a race day, it makes for a brilliant position from which to watch the sport of kings from the bar, restaurant and private lawn, or from the comfort of your bedroom – of which the hotel offers 154; each incredibly comfortable and featuring blackout blinds, mini-fridge and LCD TV. It provides a great balance whether you’re looking to celebrate in style at the races or staying in a convenient location for work [enjoy quick access to the railway station, Doncaster Sheffield Airport and motorways including the M1, M18 and M62]. The hotel’s restaurant, The Garden Grille, is the perfect place to finish off your evening and serves up seasonal dishes with flair, while providing a wonderful panoramic view of the racecourse from floor to ceiling glass windows along the side of the building. As you might expect from a grille, the menu carries an extensive selection of meats – from tender Jack Daniels glazed wings to hearty burgers worthy of being dubbed The Mobley, after Conrad Hilton’s inaugural hotel. Make sure you order the delightfully crisp salt and pepper calamari to whet your appetite and save space for the decadent double chocolate brownie. With Italian inspired pasta dishes, thin crust pizzas, salads and nibbles ideal for sharing, the restaurant offers something for every taste, all of which is delivered by
D
particularly friendly staff who go out of their way to ensure you have a relaxed dining experience without feeling rushed. The Garden Grille also plays host to lunch and a buffet-style breakfast, which offers quite a spread. Hot items include soft poached eggs,Yorkshire full English and house-made porridge drizzled with local honey, while the cold buffet offers plenty of pastries, as well as cheeses, meats, breads and juices and a good selection of coffee and teas. The Garden Bar is open throughout the day and evening and offers a relaxing setting for a post-dinner nightcap or to unwind after a conference. Promising far more than just free WiFi, this newly opened outpost of the Hilton group has fast become a favourite among business travellers, thanks to its central location and 24-hour business centre. The hotel also offers a range of versatile function space, ideal for small meetings and social events. While it’d be easy to stay nestled in the award-winning surroundings during Yorkshire’s wet winters, it’s the perfect base to explore the region when the weather is a little warmer. The hotel is a stone’s throw from Lakeside Village shopping outlet, Doncaster Dome and a whole host of museums, art galleries, golf courses and local markets and within driving distance of Yorkshire
Wildlife Park, Cusworth Hall and many more must-see attractions. Ultra-contemporary and super stylish, this is a great choice for couples, families or friends looking for an extra special day at the races, or simply want to get away from it all. Don’t leave without building your own breakfast waffles. Frivolous? Yes. Delicious? And then some. The Garden Grille Lunch 12-5pm daily (traditional Sunday lunch served on Sundays). Afternoon Tea served between 12-5pm Monday-Saturday (excluding racedays) Dinner 5-10pm daily. The Garden Grille is open to residents and non-residents. Room service is available 510pm daily.

Inside No. 32 A fabulous party marked the birth of two new businesses that have breathed new life into one of Bawtry’s key locations. Lindsay Innes and Rebecca Dickenson are the movers and shakers who have brought the buzz back to 32 High Street, home to many prominent establishments over the years until a recent period when it was crying out for someone to restore it to its former glory. Thankfully the waiting is over and the red carpet was rolled out and corks popped so guests could witness the launch of Lindsay’s concept interiors, lifestyle and soft furnishings showroom Tassel & Swag Bawtry on the ground floor. Meanwhile on the first floor, Rebecca has launched Rebecca Dickenson Hair, her first solo venture, where she promises clients will experience the luxury they deserve in a hairdressing haven. Ward Brothers celebrate centenary with Civic Mayor The Civic Mayor for Doncaster Linda Curran came to offer her congratulations as Ward Brothers, the iconic Doncaster furniture store, opened a newly refurbished ground floor as part of the business’s 100th birthday celebrations. The business was founded by cabinet makers Fred and Tom Ward at Cemetery Road in 1919 and moved to Waterdale, Doncaster five years later. The last 95 years have seen the business grow and move from Cemetery Road to Waterdale, Doncaster. They are now onto their fourth generation and remain one of the largest independent retailers in Yorkshire.

The Equinox ball was founded by Sarah and Paul Mullen from Doncaster as an annual event to raise money for local cancer charity Firefly and also Cancer Research UK. With the prosecco free-flowing and delicious canapés circulating, guests to her beautiful showroom had the opportunity to get up close and personal with her stunning range of home accessories, gifts, fabric and wallpaper books and magnificent lighting collection. “I simply wanted to say hi, this is me and this is what I’m about and I hope you love it as much as I do. I want to create a showroom that is welcoming and inviting and what better way to say that than with a party?” said Lindsay. Stocking luxury fabric and wallpaper brands including Cole & Son, Christian Lacroix and Ralph Lauren alongside
premium home accessory and lifestyle brands Popski London, BaaStool and Fiona Walker England, Lindsay has surely set the bar high. With a Christmas collection due imminently we expect Tassel & Swag to become a must visit home furnishing and gifting destination this festive season. No stranger to the Bawtry High Street, Rebecca has launched a solo venture, much to the delight of her clientele. business, Pangea, the night was every bit as fabulous as we might have expected from one of Bawtry’s most glamorous businesswomen. “It’s been a rollercoaster of a year but all the late nights, long weeks and breakme moments were worth it,” said Rebecca. “Seeing so many people come out in support of my venture has shown
me that my hard work has not been in vain. Finally, I have the salon of my dreams, a hairdressing haven where my clients can experience the level of luxury I know they each deserve.” An incidental partnership made for a spectacular party that has certainly grabbed attention for all the right reasons.

GIN TASTING
Let the festivities be-GIN... WHO DOESN’T LOVE GIN? BUT WITH SO MANY OUT THERE, IT’S HARD TO KNOW WHERE TO START. RACHEL MARTIN GRABBED A PANEL OF TASTERS TO FIND OUT WHICH GIN MAKES A TOP FESTIVE TIPPLE.
astside magazine has popped its fair share of corks in the run-up to the festive season in recent years; we’ve tried everything from Champagne to Prosecco, Cava and everything in between. So, in the true spirit of Christmas, we’ve decided to mix things up for 2019 and let the festivities be-GIN with our expert taste test of the most sought-after

tipples for every type of gin drinker. The last year alone witnessed an absolute explosion of gin – not literally, of course – with stats showing that more than 66 million bottles of were sold across the UK. We put this spirit obsession to the industry experts in our inaugural gin taste test at the fabulous Crown Hotel in Bawtry. But not just any old taste test; whether you’re agonising
over just the right present for a loved one or fancy a special bottle of something for yourself, be prepared to put down the base of your usual G&T for something a little different. So, what are the best out there? Whittling our taste test down to eight different bottles ranging in price from £26 to £36.99, we tested across sloe gin, London dry gin, premium gin and quirky

flavoured gin and ensured everything was included, from supermarket options to household names and craft-gin distillers. Our seven tasters were asked not only to select their favourite, but to score on appearance, aroma and the effects of the accompanying tonic, among other qualities. Each sample was tested neat, and then again, diluted with a small amount of mixer, to ensure that the flavour was not impaired. We opened the evening with Heston Blumenthal’s citrus sherbet lazy gin, made exclusively for Waitrose by the Michelin-starred chef. For the Old Butchers’ Louise Holling, it was a bold start: “This is a good introductory gin, very mellow and easy sipping with a slight citrusy twang.” But for Pretty Basra of Edwards and Walker, it wasn’t quite the perfect mix: “It smells good, with a perfumed, citrus aroma, but it’s a bit ordinary. There’s no ‘sherbet’ taste.” Not quite able to grab the top spot, Hendrick’s’ limited-edition Midsummer Solstice gin followed and was still a firm
favourite with the tasters. “This gin has a lovely subtle but sweet flavour with notes of cucumber and rose petals,” said Bawtry Hall’s, Phillipa Buss. “A perfect balance of floral flavour without ruining the juniper notes.”
The Contenders: Sir Robin of Locksley distilled artisan gin £36.99 from The Tasting Note, Bawtry Waitrose Heston citrus sherbet lazy gin £24.99 Hendrick’s Midsummer Solstice gin £35 True North Sheffield Dry Gin £28 J.P. Adlam N°8 £35 Brittains premium strawberry gin Sadler’s Peaky Blinders spiced dry gin £28 Hayman’s sloe gin £26
Up next was Hayman’s sloe gin. Ruby red in colour, it was a firm favourite for all of the tasters, especially Scott Brook of Doncaster’s Taylorscot. “Great for sipping, this gin really delivers a strong burst of sloes, followed by a little sourness and then a long, smooth finish.” Bottle number four was True North Brew Co’s Sheffield Dry, a small-batch gin distilled in a handmade copper cask imported from Portugal. Alongside traditional gin botanicals, a touch of Sheffield Honey and a dash of Henderson’s Relish are included, bringing a bit more of God’s Own County to this unique spirit. Distilled in the Steel City, it’s no wonder our panel favoured the taste of their county. “This gin is smooth but big on taste; you get some heat from the botanicals, which then reveals the juniper nose, before all the flavours harmonise,” said the Old Butchers’, Claire McCormack. The second Yorkshire-roots gin of the evening was Dales-based J.P. Adlam’s N°8, which recently took home gold at Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk 61

the World SIP Awards held in the USA. The small-batch distillery, which is set make the move to Doncaster in early 2020, was admired by our panel for being “majestically smooth”, so much so that our testers all nodded and smiled to each other in pleasure after the first sip. “It’s a straight-down-the-middle, topclass traditional London Dry gin with bold botanical flavours of juniper, lavender, coriander and a zingy citrus burst,” said the Crown Hotel’s, Letitia Burrows. “The skilfully hand waxed seal, however, turns this into a beautiful present; it’s absolutely lovely.” Doncaster-based Brittains’ premium strawberry gin ticked our panel’s boxes for its “innovative flavours” and “warming and smooth aftertaste”, which, according to Phillipa, was a gin that stood out above the rest: “Quite rightly the dominant taste remains juniper, but the fruity zing and a hint of strawberry make this a lovely gin, particularly for cocktails.” The penultimate bottle, Sadler’s Peaky Blinders spiced dry gin is the ideal Christmas present for fans of the hit BBC TV show. Named after the Birmingham street gang which became prominent during the 1890s, the spirit is made by Sadler’s, a distillery based in Stourbridge in the West Midlands and is already proving popular with the Crown’s discerning customers. “It’s a punchy, lip-smacking blend of exotic spices and botanicals,” said Letitia. So,
Eastside’s best buy this Christmas Sir Robin of Locksley Distilled Artisan Gin Sir Robin of Locksley is a smooth, full and rounded gin that sits midway between a London dry and an Old Tom, thanks to sumptuous sweet notes of citrus and liquorice. This sweetness is perfectly reined in by the warmth of cassia bark and herbaceous blooms, making it a very sippable and versatile festive tipple. Sir Robin of Locksley mixes well and makes a moreish gin and tonic, whilst the elderflower makes it an ideal choice for a warming Bramble cocktail. Recommended G&T garnish: Pink grapefruit Intrigued? Pick up a bottle of Sir Robin of Locksley distilled artisan gin for £36.99 from The Tasting Note, 31 Market Place, Bawtry.
similarly to the Shelby family, it’s probably not for the faint-hearted. Our overall winner, scoring the highest out of all the categories, was another of Yorkshire’s finest: Sir Robin of Locksley’s distilled artisan gin, which is a “year-round best seller” at Bawtry’s, The Tasting Note. Sir Robin of Locksley Gin was launched in 2014 by Yorkshireman, John Cherry and his wife, Cynthia and pays homage to Robin Hood, Yorkshire’s folklore legend. An experienced wine and spirit collector, John taught himself to distil and developed the final recipe following over 100 different variations. Based in Sheffield, the gin has been distilled at Portland Works since 2017 and features botanicals including elderflower and dandelion picked on the doorstep. “The flavours in this gin are released in the vapour alone; the nose is a warm cassia soothed with dandelion freshness which leads to a sweet and lingering citrus finish,” said Scott, who considers Sir Robin of Locksley his gin of choice. So, there it is, our verdict on some of the best and quirkiest gins on the market, just in time for the party season. Thank you to our gin-credible tasting panel and The Crown Hotel, Bawtry for hosting this years’ tasting.Thinking about booking a break this Christmas? CHRISTMAS QUIZ
Fond farewells
Don’t quote me...
We said goodbye to a host of famous names over the past 12 months. Can you recognise these dearly departed souls from 2019?
Who made the news in 2019 with the following snappy soundbites?
1. He started as a dancer for an English electronic group before taking on lead vocals. Huge success followed in the late 1990s. His fierce stage image led to him being regarded as a “twisted Firestarter”. 2. Regarded as one of the greatest goalkeepers of all time, this Sheffield-born stopper began his football career at Chesterfield, won the World Cup with England and denied Brazil’s Pele four years later with a stunning diving save many regard as the best ever. 3. This English stand-up comedian and impressionist became an overnight sensation after appearing on the Royal Variety Performance in the early 1970s. Controversy followed when a tabloid newspaper front page accused him of eating a small furry rodent. 4. From horse racing pundit to reality TV star, this flamboyant character had an eventful life packed with highs and lows. He won awards for campaigning journalism, appeared on Celebrity Big Brother and was sacked from the Channel 4 Racing team when his humour, which he admitted was sexist, was deemed unsuitable and outdated. 5. This American singer, actress and animal welfare activist became a Hollywood legend with a string of hit musicals and comedies, including Calamity Jane and Pillow Talk.
11. “We want to, and we are going to, deliver on the mandate of the people, which is to take the UK out of the EU whole and entire on 31 October.” 12. “He died like a dog. He died like a coward. The world is now a much safer place.” 13. “Immigrants make Britain great.” 14. “The eyes of all future generations are upon you. And if you choose to fail us, I say – we will never forgive you.” 15. “When I first met my now husband, my friends were really happy because I was so happy. But my British friends said to me: ‘I’m sure he’s great. But you shouldn’t do it because the British tabloids will destroy your life’”
Famous names Do you know your local history? These are some of the people and events that have but the Doncaster region on the map. 16. Name the soprano singer from Thorne who graduated from the Royal Academy of Music, was appointed a CBE in 2002 and has sung at several FA Cup finals? 17. Which sporting event first happened in 1776 and has become synonymous with Doncaster?
Sing a song of Christmas...
18. Name the Thorne-born inventor who, much to the relief of a grateful nation, was flush with success after inventing the modern water closet?
Some are sublime, others are just plain daft, but unless you hide away in a cave over the next month there will be no avoiding the non-stop soundtrack of festive tunes. Can you name the song from these lyric snippets.
19. Born and raised in Doncaster to Muslim Pakistani parents, this immaculately groomed young man is known for having a ‘Queer Eye’?
6. Hallelujah Noel be it Heaven or Hell The Christmas we get we deserve
20. Which son of South Yorkshire began his Grand Tour as a travelling salesman for his parents’ business, selling Paddington Bear toys? He later trained as a journalist with the Rotherham Advertiser.

So, making it welcoming and luxuriously cozy is a must – and this means creating a room that oozes warmth and comfort. What exactly these words mean will differ from person to person, but we’ve put together a list of the things we think will help you to escape the cold and create a feeling of snugness throughout your home this winter.
T

Scents of the season
Snug rugs
Updating your home fragrance is a simple yet effective way to welcome the new season with a nod to winter hues. Look for rich and warming scents combining bergamot, frankincense and amber, which are ideal to capture the aroma of a crackling open fire. Made from mineral wax blended with a high-quality fragrance, this handmade botanical candle from Sophie Allport will burn for up to 72 hours while gently scenting your room. Savannah Warmth Botanical Candle by Sophie Allport £25 www.sophieallport.com
Don’t be fooled into thinking that rugs only belong on wooden or uncarpeted floors. Adding softness under foot in the form of layers of rugs not only keeps in the heat, but also means you can sidestep your slippers. This Louis de Poortere rug has been woven on jacquard Wilton looms, giving it a high-quality finish. It is made from a combination of pure wool and cotton chenille and each rug is hand distressed for a vintage feel. Bring the outside in
Warm up your walls
Winter is not a time to be spending excessive amounts of time outdoors but that doesn’t mean we can’t bring a touch of nature indoors at a time when the thought of going outside seems unbearable. Crafted from chunky round rattan for a rustic finish, this simple curved log holder is the perfect fireside storage solution. Each features a generous capacity for storing logs, with two sturdy feet and a handle to either side for ease of carrying. Round rattan log basket by Cox & Cox £45 www.coxandcox.co.uk
It might not seem like the most obvious place to start, but a fresh lick of paint in the right colour will help to make your home feel a lot warmer. So, swap cold white walls for dark, deep colours that will transform any space. Traditionally, colours such as red and orange were used to bring warmth to an interior, but rich shades of navy blue, emerald green and dark grey are just as sumptuous. Families in Doncaster enjoyed being budding inventors at a series of fun-filled workshops. The exciting workshops, which took place at The Point on South Parade, encouraged families to get creative and create their very own automata – quirky sculptures made from wire and laser cut plywood. These welcoming and inclusive workshops, which included activities specifically designed for disabled children and their families, were inspired by the larger-thanlife automata in The Point’s ‘Human Machines’ exhibition. The Point hosts a wide range of family-friendly activities throughout the year. For all upcoming activities, visit www.thepoint.org.uk/whats-on.
