A home from HOME
The Pilgrim Fathers Holiday Park is set in acres of rolling countryside. ong before the invention of cars and the motorway network, the Great North Road was once the main highway between London and Edinburgh. Until 1766, the of village Scrooby could be found on this important thoroughfare and became a stopping-off Queen Elizabeth I and Cardinal Wolsey on their journeys. The history of the village, which straddles the border between North Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire, can be traced back to 958 when King Edgar granted an estate with land at Scroppenporpe, including an area now in the modern Scrooby, to Oscytel, Archbishop of York. One of the most notable buildings in the village, the Manor House, belonged to the

Archbishops of York and was sometimes referred to as a ‘palace’. At the end of the 16th century, the house was occupied by William Brewster, the Archbishop’s bailiff who was also postmaster. His son, also named William, took that post in the 1590s Anglican Church, acquired Brownist beliefs and attempted to leave for the Netherlands
in 1607. After an unsuccessful attempt, Brewster succeeded in 1608 and eventually went to New England in 1620 on the the Pilgrim Fathers. The Manor House was eventually demolished in the 19th century. Scrooby may longer be part of the Great North Road but it can still make for a pleasant and relaxing stopping-off point for modern day travellers. And the Pilgrim Fathers are still very much present there. The Pilgrim Fathers Holiday Park is countryside, just off the Great North Road, and is home to static caravans as well as tourers, campervans and tents too. The site is completely secure behind electronic gates and has brand new toilet and washing facilities for the latter. There are currently ten occupied static

Love is in THE AIR
There’s lots to be excited about this month, says Jordan Odu. he month of love is in full swing and I have to say I’m feeling it right now. Firstly, let’s start with the basics: lighter nights are creeping through, Mini Eggs are back in store, classes at David Lloyd and we have some exciting openings coming up across the city. I’m also loving the latest line-ups at the Grand Theatre; I can’t wait for Legally direct arena keeps announcing act after act; I’ve already booked the amazing suites for

Winter has got me on a mission to try a different roast every weekend, and so far I’ve indulged in some incredible plates at Whitehall, The Mustard Pot and The Owl, who’ve all aced the brief with some impressive variations on this British classic. Whilst summer might seem like a million miles away, I’ve already been
Firstly, I was excited to see that Leeds Pride is returning for its biggest event to date on Sunday 21 July. This year will see the iconic celebration span even further across the city, with more bars getting involved and a second stage added to Lower Briggate to complement the main stage. The event is predicted to welcome 70,000 visitors to the city in 2024 and I’m totally here for it. I rediscovered the delights of the celebrated restaurant HOME, and their new tasting menus keep tempting me back for

ith just 99 seats in its auditorium, Doncaster Little Theatre really lives up its name. Small but perfectly formed, the King Street venue opened in 1995 and produces 11 of its own theatrical performances a year as well as playing host to other shows and events. The 99 seats make for an intimate space where the audience can feel very much part of the production. But why 99 seats and not 100? There’s a simple reason and it all comes down to licensing, best explained by artistic director Alan Clark: “For most plays you
W
have to pay a licensing fee, which is based on the size of your potential audience. 0-99 is one band, 100 to whatever is another and so on. So we could put one more seat in but then we would be paying a lot more for the rights.” Doncaster Little Theatre (DLT) is run largely through volunteers – they have between 80 and 100 active members – so They host a diverse programme, which can range from drama and comedy to musicals and their much-loved panto. All productions generally run for three nights
(Thursday, Friday and Saturday) and although the panto runs for 16. year are productions of Real Estate (1-3 February), White Bike (7-9 March), Pinocchio (10-12 April), Rum & Vodka and By The Tree Stump (9-11 May) and Sod’s Law (13-15 June). The programme for the second half of the year will be announced shortly but this year’s panto has already Costs for the various shows can vary, with the panto being the most expensive due to the amount of costumes, but it is the

latter that allows to be so diverse in their creativity. “The pantomime is a big money-spinner because we do 16 shows and it’s virtually a sell-out, every one,” said Alan, who has in the role of artistic director since 2023. Alan’s role, along with the artistic committee, is to decide the programme, make sure it’s diverse, and then liaise with the various directors and casts to ensure they have everything they need. Communication is often key. “What the panto gives us the money, in like for the rest of the shows but it means we can do what we want to do.” This creative licence afforded by the panto allows DLT to put on shows that audiences may not have heard of. Real Estate is the perfect example, which Alan

Written by Freddie Machin, it’s a sharply observed, epic play combining elements of social realism and satire, which asks: who do our homes really belong to, and who gets to tell our stories? “It’s a lovely little play,” said Alan. “I think it’s fabulous.” The origins of Doncaster Little Theatre can be traced back to the 1930s when a group of local theatre enthusiasts decided to form an amateur dramatic group, calling themselves ‘The Doncaster Literary Society’. Using a number of venues, mainly local church halls, the ‘Lit’, as they became known, went from strength to strength and eventually reached a point where some members wanted to do a greater variety of plays, the backstage members wanted their own workshop, and some saw the advantages of a more intimate theatrical
style in a smaller space. The Society decided to search for premises which would offer the desired scope – centrally located and affordable with the potential to be converted into a theatre. Eventually, the dilapidated L-shaped former tile warehouse on King Street, just off East Laith Gate, was located. In the autumn of 1994, members of the ‘Lit’ launched into the conversion of the King Street building to create the new Doncaster Little Theatre. It opened in March 1995 with the production of Terrence Rattigan’s ‘The Deep Blue Sea’. Since this time, the DLT has continued to grow and added a youth group – ‘The Young Lit’ – who host two shows a year. They meet every Saturday, with ages ranging from six to 16, and as well as producing their own shows, many have moved on to the main productions.

ARTS
Rehearsals in the bar area
The foyer
Doncaster Little Theatre is a registered charity and currently receives no funding, apart from some grants, which they can apply for to complete set projects. They rely on ticket sales, the hiring of the theatre and bar sales to keep going. All members are volunteers who, as well as performing in the various shows, run the front of house, bar and behind the scenes. “It’s a great thing because everyone is here who wants to be and I think that gives the theatre a certain magic,” beamed Alan. “Lots of people have said ‘it’s so nice to have such a warm intimate welcome’. That’s because our members are part of it and feel like it’s theirs. The minute you come through the door, you’re likely to be welcomed by somebody who really does want to welcome, not because they’re being paid to do so. It does make a difference.” As well as their own productions, DLT
hire out the venue for various live music, comedy and theatre events. Coming up over the next few months you can see tributes to the likes of The Beatles, Elton John, Thin Lizzy and Coldplay as well as comedy from Lou Conran. There’s an adult panto in May – Beauty and the Beast – as well as events with medium Chris Drew and the Primary School Assembly, Bangers Live! (26 April). Doncaster Little Theatre also host Afternoon Cabaret on alternate Fridays, which is popular with the older crowd who come along to see a varied selection of crooners and singers. “At the end of the day, what most people don’t realise, is that this theatre is run for the members,” said Alan. “We sometimes do struggle to get audiences in for plays that we put on but I still want us to stick to our artistic beliefs because it’s what we
want to do. It’s not just about three nights for the cast, they’ve got the production, the rehearsals and everything in between. “I’ve always found the rehearsals to be my favourite bit, I love the process as much as performing, There’s plenty of joking, that’s what it’s about. This is a family and I’ve made a lot of good friends here.” That’s what characterises Doncaster Little Theatre. It’s very much a collaborative effort from people who clearly enjoy what they do. And that shows in their productions. If you haven’t yet ventured to this part of town, it may be time to give it a try. If you all, there’s only 99 seats.

Special TALENT
Archie Gray is one of the most talented young footballers in the country. The teenager tells Ross Heppenstall about living his dream at Leeds United. t has been quite the rise for Archie Gray these past six months. The Leeds United teenager has not only made his debut for the club he has supported since childhood. He has become a key cog in a team pushing hard for an immediate return to the Premier League. Not bad for a 17-year-old who has already captained England at youth level and is tipped for the very top. But it goes deeper. Archie, who recently signed a new long-term deal, is the third generation of the Gray family to wear the famous white jersey. Dad Andy, grandfather Frank and great-uncle Eddie all played for Leeds – now it’s Archie’s time to shine. ,+*)('*&%&$%#"! !* * ) $ *! *') made his senior bow in last August’s Championship opener, a 2-2 draw with

ental implants have revolutionised dentistry by providing a more advanced and effective solution for replacing missing teeth. They are designed to mimic the natural look and feel of teeth and, unlike traditional dentures or bridges, offer a more stable treatment option. When a tooth is lost, the underlying jawbone can start to deteriorate over time causing bone loss around the area. Townhouse Design specialise in premium German kitchen design and stylish British manufactured kitchens and bedrooms. ownhouse Design is a luxury kitchen showroom showcasing premium German kitchen design and stylish British manufactured kitchens and bedrooms. Rob Spencer, the Design Director behind Townhouse Design, decided to open this luxury kitchen showroom 20 years ago in Harrogate’s Montpellier Quarter facing the “This has always been such a beautiful

location in Harrogate,” says Rob, “and I had always loved this parade, so when this building became available I was immediately drawn to it.” At one point this Victorian townhouse " " which of course lent inspiration for the business name, Townhouse Design. In the early 1900s, the beautiful curved " a large bay window. The end result is a " "" to various businesses over the years. The Parade is now a highly regarded shopping destination with boutiques, galleries, coffee shops and of course Townhouse Design.
Over 20 years the showroom has evolved and now has seven displays to provide inspiration for clients to peruse. Jonathan Bowskill, Sales Manager, says: “Deciding what to put on display is challenging but " clients. And of course, you have to ensure that your choices suit the space.” Consistent with a policy of showing kitchens that look complete and sizeable, has been challenging as the building isn’t square and there will always be things that have to be considered at the time The designers therefore understand these challenges that people face in their own

homes when imagining a new kitchen and the showroom demonstrates that with many years of experience, that they can create a cohesive and stunning end result. “The team feels that choosing materials is one of our strengths and in part we think that this is why the end result for clients is a kitchen that feels unique and designed exclusively for them,” adds Jonathan. The team explains that this is made of their main manufacturer partner, Leicht. Leicht is a global manufacturer based near Stuttgart that started from a humble carpentry background nearly 100 years ago and is still family owned. They are known for being timelessly stylish and durable and are the number one sold luxury kitchen brand in Germany. The team are always striving to be the best and within the last 18 months, the building has had four new and beautiful Leicht kitchen displays in addition to the established displays where people can feel inspired and think about how they could
work in their own homes. There are also plans underway for future changes in 2024 available from Leicht, together with inspirational work surface materials and the latest appliance models from Siemens, Gaggenau, Bora and Liebherr. In addition, the showroom will introduce a new British kitchen manufacturer to the portfolio providing classically inspired kitchens in a carefully curated palette of colours. Asked if kitchen trends are moving fast Rob enthusiastically agreed they are. “We have noticed that now more people work from home they are spending far more time at the dining table appraising their kitchen and they have concluded that functional, clean and tidy is no longer enough and
instead they want their new kitchen to be impressive yet homely, and practical, and decorative, and sociable. “The kitchen really is the most hardworking room in the house and so it what they are doing, has strong positive reviews and has won awards for their work.” can help you with changes to your home and kitchen then please visit or call the showroom. IN BRIEF
RHS Garden Harlow Carr Artist in Residence 2024-2025
RHS Harlow Carr are delighted to announce the launch of applications for the 20242025 RHS Harlow Carr Artist in Residence opportunity, which will give a new artist the chance to showcase their work through imagining and developing their own interpretation of the garden to share with the gardens visitors. After the fantastic success of last year’s artist Hilary Burnett Cooper, this year’s appointee will also follow in the footsteps of award winning artists Nel Whatmore, Anita Bowerman. The Artist in Residence programme will last a full year, culminating with a solo exhibition at the garden as well as space at the RHS Harlow Carr Summer Garden Weekend 2024. The appointed artist will need to spend at least three weeks on site during their residency, carrying out research and demonstrating their artistic practice at the garden, working closely with the team on site whilst also conversing with and informing the public about the role. They will develop a participatory programme which could include activity such as workshops, open studios, talks etc.. to help encourage visitors to use the gardens to inspire their own creative visions. To apply, applicants need to send a completed application to HCartistresidency@rhs.org.uk Applications close 5pm, Friday 24 February. For further information and to apply, visit https://www.rhs.org.uk/gardens/ harlow-carr/artist-in-residence
Marathon Challenge
Westside’s editor, Richard Abbey, undertook a marathon challenge in January – quite literally, completing 26.2 miles to raise money for the Prostate Cancer charity. It’s a cause that’s very close to Richard’s heart after his dad was recently diagnosed with the life-threatening disease. Prostate cancer affects one in eight men in the UK and an early diagnosis can save your life. By taking part in Run the Month: Marathon Edition, Richard is helping men get an earlier diagnosis and fund research into better, more effective tests. You can still donate to the worthwhile cause by scanning the QR code with your smartphone or by visiting https://runthemonthme. prostatecanceruk.org/fundraising/richards-run-the-monthchallenge2024

New £15 million Orthopaedic Surgery Centre opens
The Mexborough Elective Orthopaedic Centre of Excellence $#"! The MEOC is part of a national initiative to reduce waiting lists, and will be one of two orthopaedic surgical hubs sponsored by the South Yorkshire Integrated Care System (ICS). The project was delivered following investment of just under £15million, with construction beginning in July and completed in December 2023. day a week service, increasing to six days once running to full capacity, expected by mid-2024. It is anticipated that knee and hip replacement patients will be able to go home the same day as their surgery, in line with national best practices. Richard Parker OBE, Chief Executive at DBTH, said: “The MEOC will make a huge difference for those patients who require orthopaedic surgery. The service will help to not only reduce waiting lists for orthopaedic treatment in the locality, but also reduce health inequalities, as the South Yorkshire area it serves sits within one of the most deprived areas in the country.” The centre, which is a collaboration between three hospital trusts, Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals (DBTH), Barnsley Hospital NHS Foundation Trust (BH), and The Rotherham Foundation Trust (TRFT), will focus exclusively on procedures such as hand and wrist surgeries, foot and ankle treatments, arm and shoulder procedures, carpals, and knee and hip replacement. Its location at Montagu Hospital in Mexborough, ensures that it will remain protected from the typical disruptions experienced by general hospitals, particularly emergency treatment pressures and heightened activity during the colder months. with landscaping and pathways completed. Specialist equipment, including a C-Arm—an advanced medical imaging device based on X-ray technology—have been successfully delivered and installed in the theatres and in other areas within the centre. Additionally, stocks of medical supplies are in place, ready for upcoming procedures. Additionally, both medical and clerical staff have undergone processes and protocols associated with the service. #"! " ! ! ! ! " ! ! " ! " ! ! " " ! ! " ! ! " # " " " !

Create your own fragrance at the Sileno Cheloni perfumery

TRAVEL n exuberant man paces around the room wafting vigorously as smoke billows into the air - moments after I’d been encouraged to close my eyes and relax. Florence, I’d taken a stroll away from the crowds and over the Arno River for an alternative tasting experience. The smell became increasingly intense as I drifted off in the setting of an alchemical renaissance – tucked away in a back street in the historic San Niccoló region of the beautiful city. But there was no need to make a hasty exit, as I was being treated to the novelty of an incense ceremony in the mystical surroundings of a perfumery. The man dressed all in black whipping his arms around as he circled our table was Sileno Cheloni – a perfumery master who was burning incense rather than a restaurant. speaking of a passion for perfumery that has taken him all over the world in search of ingredients to create hundreds of sweetsmelling scents. The perfumery welcomes couples, groups and anyone interested in creating their own fragrance from the riches he has sourced on his travels. Maestro Cheloni invited around a dozen of us to take a whiff of alluring samples before recommending we shut our eyes as Arabian music played during what felt like it had turned into a meditation session. Stepping back onto the bustling streets of the charming Tuscan capital, I felt thoroughly relaxed knowing I still had a massage to come at the plush La Gemma Hotel where I was fortune enough to be staying. TRAVEL
April just around the corner from iconic landmarks, swanky shops and restaurants. A short stretch of the legs from Piazza della Repubblica, the Ponte Vecchio, Piazza del Duomo and via de’ Tornabuoni, the luxurious La Gemma is the perfect place to unwind after taking in the many delights Florence has to offer. There was a lovely laid-back feel throughout my stay at the glamourous and stylish oasis – which has a sophisticated decor style inspired by the colour palette of the famous nearby Duomo cathedral, with its green marble and pink hued stone. My eyes lit up when I opened the door to marvel at a spacious suite that I could happily have lived in - and there was another surprise in store when I was called into action to make drinks in the cozy cocktail bar. Having swiftly concluded I was better off on the other side of the bar as I tried a few tricks of the trade during a mixology class, my reward for getting into the spirit of things was a sumptuous dinner in the top-class hotel restaurant. There was a lovely ambience in LUCA’s
by Paolo Airaudo, a highly-acclaimed Michelin Star chef, where it was the turn of the chefs to create delightful smells and delicious food served by attentive staff with beaming smiles. with a buzz in the air, it felt like I was being treated to an endless banquet of beautiful cuisine. followed by amberjack, daikon, tomato water ume kosho. I then lapped up the tasty blue lobster risotto, pumpkin, nasturtium and ‘nduja. Just when I thought I’d already overindulged, out came the Iberian pluma, onion and maitake, with Jerusalem artichokes to come and white chocolate petit fours rounding off a stunning tasting menu. And I was certainly not thinking I could get too much of a good thing the following morning, while sauntering the streets scenting more culinary delights on a Florentine food and wine tour. Options are endless in Florence, but local luxury travel experts Italy Customized
took me down small alleyways and a little off the beaten track to discover where the locals head for coffee, food, wine and chocolate. I’m also given an insightful history lesson as we meander through the masses of tourists to nip into what felt like produce and take a late-morning sip of prosecco in tranquil surrounds. We pass many wine windows in the streets where tipples were passed through during the plague – and again when coronavirus restrictions were in place. There’s a wine-tasting session before a visit to a Gelateria to give the taste buds one last treat on our whistle-stop tour. Maestro Cheloni had spoken of how smells remind you of places where you have been and the people you encountered. As I reluctantly packed by bag to depart, I knew I would never turn my nose up at another trip to Florence - as I had a burning desire to return as soon as possible.
