The Cable Pass + Wakeboard introductory sessions are a minimum of two hours and are aimed at beginners to cable riding. The sessions include standard safety brief and kneeboard instruction plus wakeboard hire and short dockside wakeboard introduction (usually progression to the wakeboarding part happens once you have got around the four corners of the cable on a kneeboard). This session is an introductory session and wakeboarding is a physically demanding sport so progression during the session can vary – expect to have fun, have a great workout and get wet trying!

Q&A
Get crafting AHEAD OF THE RETURN OF CRAFTING LIVE TO DONCASTER RACECOURSE, WE SPEAK TO PRESENTERS STEPHANIE WEIGHTMAN AND NANCY WATT. Hi Stephanie and Nancy! How does it feel to be back in Doncaster for another Crafting Live show?
Stephanie: I’m very excited, Doncaster Racecourse is a fantastic venue and I always look forward to visiting. We’ve been coming here for years and its always a joy, for us and all our crafters who come to join us. Nancy: Doncaster Racecourse is always very good to us, and fingers crossed for nice weather because the venue is just perfect for it. There’s lots of lovely greenery and open space to sit outside and take a breather in the fresh air, after plenty of shopping of course. Can your Doncaster guests expect anything new for 2019?
Stephanie: They absolutely can! We’ve got a brand-new VIP experience for our 2019 guests, and I think it’s incredible if I say so myself. Our lucky VIPs get to jump the queue with fast-track entry, they received a free Create and Craft tote bag filled with goodies (like a crafty party bag!), pre-booking on two of our Make and Takes… I think it’s fantastic, I’m a little envious myself.
22 Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk
Nancy: They get access to the special VIP area too, and an exclusive Make and Take with me and Lou Collins. VIP tickets also allow guests to book onto the Aardman workshops for just £5. It really is a bargain, just perfect for people who want to get the most out of the show. Stephanie: Speaking of the Aardman workshops, they’re brand-new for 2019 too, and they’re amazing. We’ve enlisted the help of George Watson, an experienced model maker for Aardman, who guides a class in making your very own Gromit on the Saturday’s workshop, or your own Shaun the Sheep on Sunday’s. Best of all, you get to take your work away with you at the end and keep hold of it. I was really pleased to have George on board, the Aardman workshops are a fantastic addition to Crafting Live. How would you describe a Crafting Live show to a new or prospective guest?
Stephanie: In many ways, it’s the crafter’s equivalent to a summer festival, but thankfully you don’t have to sleep in a tent! Even if you come for the shopping, there are tons of exhibitors bringing with
them all sorts of wares for a range of crafty styles and disciplines. I’m proud of the educational focus on the show most of all, and all of our Make and Takes are completely free for anybody who’s interested. Nancy: But the spaces are limited, so make sure you pre-book as soon as you can. I think a Crafting Live show is perfect for people who want to be around other crafters and enjoy a good day out, learn something new, and feel as if they’ve got to leave with fresh ideas and inspiration. There really is a buzz when you’re at the shows, and I know I speak for myself and Stephanie when I say it’s wonderful to speak to all our guests and share their passion for crafting. Stephanie: Yes, all of this and like we say, Doncaster Racecourse is just a fabulous place to host it all. We love coming back to this venue year after year and it really has become a staple of the Crafting Live annual itinerary. Crafting Live takes place at Doncaster Racecourse on 13 & 14 July. EATING OUT
A delightful detour CHARLES BRADSHAW SWAPS MONOTOUS MOTORWAYS FOR PICTURESQUE COUNTRYSIDE – AND A LOVELY LUNCH. he Old Butchers is located adjacent to a mysterious Saxon stone ‘butter cross’ in the centre of Fishlake, a village roughly a 20minute drive from Doncaster and easily accessible from the M18. Approaching The Old Butchers, my dining companion and I passed acres of farmland, a renovated windmill (sadly without sails) and numerous picturesque dwellings – a welcome departure from the sight of monotonous motorway traffic and industrial units en-route. The previous Fishlake village butcher’s shop was given a new lease of life by owners (and sisters-in-law) Louise McCormack and Claire Holling 18 months ago. Following extensive decoration, refitting and an abundant amount of upcycled furniture, The Old Butchers opened as a café/bistro. Today the venue has become an integral part of the village and enthusiastically supports the local community. Local produce such as honey, eggs and gluten-free meat products are not only used within the menu, but can be purchased separately. Upon our arrival, we were warmly greeted and shown to our table near the
T
window. I ordered a cloudy lemonade (£2.20) while my companion asked for a glass of water while we perused the expansive food menu. This included hearty breakfast items, light bites, a ‘specials’ board, lunch and children’s menu options – all made daily. I ordered Granny Mag’s Scotch Egg (£5.95) while my companion opted for the Quiche with Salad Bowl (£7.95). Our plates arrived promptly with my lightly fried Scotch Egg delivered piping hot with a large free-range egg inside and coated in succulent sausage meat. This was accompanied by a side salad, coleslaw and a pot of thick cut crisps. My companion’s quiche (made daily) was an exceedingly generous, deep-filled slice, enveloped in crisp short-crust pastry. The delicate creamy consistency was divine and cooked to perfection. The portion nestled upon a hearty salad bowl comprising mixed leaves, sliced peppers, cherry tomatoes and a dip of hummus, to name a few ingredients. For dessert, we opted for a slice of home-made Chocolate Fudge Cake (£3) to share. A number of other home-made options graced the reclaimed counter area, including gluten-free cake slices
and chocolate tiffin. Our cake slice consisted of moist chocolate sponge with a deliciously rich fondant centre, topped with chocolate and was soon devoured. We completed our lunch with hot beverages; a pot of tea (£1.95) and an Americano (£2), which were the perfect ending to our feast. During our short sojourn, it became clear that Louise and Claire are certainly passionate about their venture. Service was swift, customers’ needs quickly attended to and the atmosphere was very relaxed. With popular bistro nights enlisting local chefs and butchers plus charity and business lunch events planned, there’s plenty on offer to keep customers returning. two forested peaks, is inspiration enough to visit. At almost 600 years old, and considered one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, it is an aweinspiring place and a remarkably wellpreserved site of historical and archaeological importance. Whether it is the panorama of the city backed by the mountain of Huayna Picchu that takes your breath away, the intricate stone carvings that impress or the flood of emotions felt as you watch the early morning mist clearing over the city, it is an experience that you will remember for a lifetime. Machu Picchu is merely the tip of an archaeological iceberg in Peru. Sites like Moray, Winay Wayna and Ollantaytambo are just a few of the many jewels in the Inca crown. Add to this the Nazca lines
(huge enigmatic geoglyphs carved onto the desert floor), or Chavin de Huantar (a 2,500-year-old fortress temple), the ancient city of TĂşcume with its adobe pyramids and citadels, or the remote 12th-century fortress of KuĂŠlap cresting a cloud forest hilltop, and you have a country which displays its history and traditions on its sleeve. The Peruvian landscape is as diverse as the country is rich in history. Stretching like an intricate spine the length of Peru, the Andes lend spectacular scenery, from its highest peaks in the mighty Cordillera Blanca range to the deep shimmering waters of lofty Lake Titicaca. This rollercoaster terrain and its myriad habitats help bolster almost unrivalled biodiversity. Desert-like country fills the stark plains to the west beside the Pacific.

Discover the ‘Black Mountain’ SPA TRAVEL, WORKING WITH CLASSIC COLLECTION HOLIDAYS, REVEAL THEIR HOT PICK FOR 2019 – MONTENEGRO. oasting beautiful beaches along its stunning coastline, Montenegro is home to verdant pine-clad mountains, crystal clear glacial lakes, and the Adriatic waters which lap against its historic walled coastal towns. A small but immensely beautiful European country, little-discovered Montenegro enjoys a mild Mediterranean climate with over 200 sunny days a year, a 300km long, picturesque Adriatic coastline with more than 100 wonderfully unspoilt beaches, a rugged, mountainous interior, and a wealth of well-preserved historic walled towns, traditional villages and rural hamlets. Just to the south of Croatia, Montenegro, or Crna Gora (Black Mountain) as it is known locally, has a rich history with the Greeks, Romans, Byzantines and Ottoman Turks all leaving their mark, plus a distinctive Venetian influence in Budva, Herceg Novi and the UNESCO listed, and not to be missed, Kotor.

Where are the best places to visit in Montenegro?
Set in hugely picturesque surroundings, the region of Budva Riviera features some of the Adriatic coastline’s finest wide sandy bays and tranquil, hidden coves. With its backdrop of verdant, treeclad mountains, this long swathe of golden sand and pebbles is bordered by a picturesque promenade lined with restaurants, leading to the walled town of Budva. At the other end of the promenade, linked by a strip of pink sand, lies tiny St Stephen Island (Sveti Stefan), much revered by holidaying glitterati and, along the coast to the south merging into modern Becici, is the charming resort of Rafailovici. There are water sports available, a waterpark and, for nightlife, head to vibrant Budva. Budva has always enjoyed favour amongst the rich and famous and there 36 Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk
are chic cocktail bars, sophisticated restaurants and trendy nightclubs around the marina. The old town, set on a small peninsula, surrounded by 15th century ramparts features historic monuments, Venetian style buildings, piazzas and narrow cobbled streets filled with galleries and cafes. In summer, Budva becomes an open-air stage hosting numerous theatre and music festivals. For a quieter, more romantic location, choose the coastal town of Tivat. Enjoying a mountainous backdrop, our hotels allow guests to delve into this small town’s cultural heritage, with attractive architecture and summer showcases consisting of concerts and plays that visitors can enjoy. Classic Collection Holidays offers a selection of four and five-star hotels in Montenegro. Offering a diverse landscape to explore, this country provides a fantastic setting in which to spend time. Choose one of our three luxurious hotels, two in the lush area of Budva Riviera and two in the historical region of Tivat.
Whether you are looking for an escape with the family or a romantic getaway, this region offers something for everyone. To get more out of your holiday combine one of our hotels in Becici, near historic Budva, with Dubrovnik for a two-centre holiday. Cuisine
For a relatively small country Montenegro has a wide range of culinary offerings as numerous historic occupiers have left their culinary marks. The results are a fascinating fusion of quite exotic flavours; always using high quality, fresh, often organic, produce. There is AustroHungarian influenced goulash and satarash, Italian pasta and polenta dishes, The town of Perast on Kotor lake

and moussaka, burek and baklava; all traced back to Turkey. Along the Adriatic coast the emphasis is on a healthy, light diet with delicious freshly caught fish and seafood, lots of extra virgin olive oil and an abundance of fresh fruits. Further inland cuisine is more hearty and wholesome, the exceptionally fertile lake region is home to the country’s wine production, and Lake Skadar is well renowned for its freshwater fish. What to do?
In addition to the stunning coastline, Montenegro boasts a wealth of sights and historic attractions with medieval walled towns, traditional villages, churches and monasteries. Don’t miss UNESCO listed Kotor, in its spectacular fjord-like bay, which features Venetian architecture, a 17th century clock tower, museums and 12th century St Triphun Cathedral. A short distance away in Boka Bay, Perast is a beautiful old town with frequent taxi boat transfers to Our Lady of the Rock (Gospa od Skrpjela), a picturesque little island with an amazing church and museum. And just 20 minutes’ drive from the coast in its own beautiful national park, Lake Skadar, is the largest expanse of water in the Balkans. Another of the four national parks, breathtaking Durmitor, is set along the Tara river canyon; of glacial origin, it features one of the deepest gorges in
Tivat – from the sea
Europe where clear lakes nestle in dense forests themselves home to bear, wolf, wild boar, chamois, numerous bird species and a range of rare flora. Not surprisingly, Montenegro is fantastic for walking, hiking and mountain biking and there is also exhilarating white-water rafting and sea kayaking possibilities. Numerous coastal watersports include water skiing and wake boarding, and hotels generally offer various sports amenities including tennis courts and fitness rooms. In addition, there are four national parks to explore including Lake Skadar, the largest expanse of water in the Balkans, and Durmitor, set along the Tara river canyon with a fantastic range of flora and fauna, dense forests and clear lakes. These boots are made for walking
AT A LOOSE END ON A SUNDAY? WHY NOT JOIN THE RETFORD RAMBLERS FOR A STROLL IN THE SURROUNDING COUNTRYSIDE? CHRIS WILSON SPOKE TO SECRETARY MIKE OGLEY. alking is one of the healthiest pastimes known to mankind and members of the Retford Ramblers have found it is a fantastic way to get fit, make new friends and see some gorgeous countryside. It’s also a hobby that doesn’t have to be ruinously expensive – once you’ve kitted yourself out with some comfortable boots and waterproofs, you’re good to go. And there are walks to suit all levels of fitness, from gentle strolls to challenging hikes. There are 90-plus members of Retford Ramblers, many but by no means all of them recently retired, and around 30 of them will be out and about on any given Sunday, depending on family commitments and holidays. Mike Ogley is secretary and membership secretary and also one of the main walk leaders, running six or seven walks every year. But he does enjoy
W
38 Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk
walks planned by other leaders so he can just follow on and enjoy the scenery. He says: “My wife Barbara and I are keen walkers and we joined the Ramblers because after a while you run out of your own repertoire of walks. On the day it’s very nice to turn up and be taken somewhere different by a competent leader. There’s structure to the day, it is very well organised. And we always have a back marker, which is important. No-one is left behind.”
Marsden Moor
The types of walks undertaken reflect the weather and the time of year. Between January and mid-May they will stay within a 15-mile radius of Retford, undertaking walks of between six and ten miles. “We describe then as mainly moderate walks where you don’t need any great physical strength, following tracks and off road most of the time,” says Mike. Mid-May to the end of September is peak walking time with longer days and better weather lending themselves to more challenging and adventurous walks. Also at this time of year the group, that meets in Carolgate Car Park in Retford opposite the church and library every Sunday morning, will meet earlier and drive further afield to begin their walks. Then from Mid-September to December, with a greater chance of unpleasant weather and the nights drawing in, there are shorter, local walks.
FEATURE
Mike has been with Retford Ramblers for about six years, and now he is retired with more leisure time he goes further afield with other Ramblers groups who hold midweek walks in and around Sheffield, Rotherham and Doncaster. He says: “One of the main benefits of being a member of Retford Ramblers is that we are a very good social group. We usually go to a pub for a drink afterwards, particularly on the longer walks. You feel as if you’ve earned it after being up and down the peaks.” There is also an annual dinner, an AGM with a guest speaker and some of the keener walkers will organise their own holidays within the group. For example, a party is off to Shropshire soon for a four-day walking holiday and there are often similar breaks to Derbyshire and North Yorkshire. Later this year some dedicated hikers are heading off to Slovenia. There’s no upper age limit, and the group currently includes a very keen walker aged 86. “Often if people do join us after they retire they find walking is a
great way to get in shape and stay fit,” says Mike. Being based in Retford means there are some beautiful waking areas very close at hand and among the venues regularly visited are: Market Warsop, Clumber Park, Blyth, Hodsock, Tuxford and the Markhams, North and South
Anston, the Chesterfield canal, Grindley, Drakeholes, Clayworth, Bothamsall, Sturton le Steeple, Denshill Lakes, Bolsover and Hardwick Hall. For more information visit retford.ramblers@gmail.com or contact Mike on 01427 880984.

Sit back and relax SPEND YOUR SUMMER IN THE GARDEN, WRITES OLIVIA WARSOP, IT WON’T DISAPPOINT. espite a few rainy days, Summer is truly in the air and for those doing a spot of gardening or even just getting out for the day, a trip to the garden centre for lunch never disappoints. Walkers Nurseries in Blaxton offers a range of meals from their two on site cafes, The Potting Shed and The Garden Restaurant. Promising delicious food made with only the freshest locally sourced produce, we sat ourselves down in The Garden Restaurant with a pot of tea (£2) and a fair-trade cappuccino (£2.80), quite prepared to be delighted. A variety of hot lunches are served daily in The Garden Restaurant made with Yorkshire ingredients and served with a choice of fresh vegetables and other sides such as chips and bread from the self-serve counter (£9). I excitedly walked to our table with a large portion of chicken supreme and root vegetables with home cooked chips. A member of the kitchen staff described to me how the chicken was cooked in a chive-infused cream sauce, which came through strongly giving a full and

savoury flavour. This dish was also topped off with plenty of well-cooked pieces of bacon. If you prefer something lighter they also offer a range of lunch dishes including soups, jacket potatoes and sandwiches starting from £4.25. From this selection my partner opted for a sausage and bacon panini dripping with melted cheese and served with a crisp Mediterranean salad and thick cut chips (£6.95). For those early risers there’s also an extensive breakfast menu including sandwiches, wraps and full cooked breakfasts starting from £4. If you still have some room to spare after this then you’ll find a large assortment of cakes and buns to satisfy any sweet tooth. Home-made sponge cakes in every flavour line the counters, stood on dainty cake stands and cut into huge slabs waiting to be eaten with cups of tea. From these I gleefully took away a piece of salted caramel sponge with a toffee cream filling (£3). After I’ve finished measuring the piece against my hand – the cake was bigger – it was
quickly demolished. The sponge was fluffy and light, in perfect balance to the rich, sweet stickiness of the toffee. Across the table a more citrusy option was enjoyed just as much. Lemon and poppy seed sponge with a lemon icing melted in the mouth but not before giving a sharp, zesty kick to contrast the sweetness of the icing (£3). The Garden Restaurant, as well as boasting lovely food, also boasts a beautiful view of the grounds so next time you find yourself wanting to enjoy the sunshine, grab a drink and a menu, sit, relax and look out at the greenery. Something new RHIANA HUGHES IS ONE OF THE FIRST IN LINE TO TRY RIOJA’S NEW-LOOK MENU. ioja has been an Eastside favourite for years; we all love it for its relaxed atmosphere, friendly staff and delicious tapas menu, and they’ve taken home more than one big win at our Eastside Restaurant Awards. It should come as no surprise, then, that when we heard they were closing for a quick spruce up and a rejig of the menu, we wanted to be some of the first to try it out. We wasted no time, and headed to Rioja the day after it reopened with big hopes and even bigger appetites. Sitting down and ordering a glass of Monte Lagares Rioja (175ml £5) and an orange and pomegranate San Pellegrino (330ml can £2.50) for the designated driver, we looked over the menu to find that not only are Rioja continuing to serve their famous tapas, but they’ve added flatbreads, build your own burgers and a brand new grill section to the menu too. Torn between ordering their trusty tapas and something from the new side of the menu, my dining companion and I

decided that the only way forward was to do both. Sharing a few dishes from the tapas menu, we knew we wouldn’t be disappointed. The chorizo and shallots in a red wine reduction (£5.95) were a sweet surprise, with tender bitesize pieces taking up just the right amount of space on our forks to allow room for the patatas bravas (£4.95). As we worked our way through the small plates, we were delighted to see our burger on its way out of the kitchen. Rioja’s new burger menu is perfect for picky eaters and gluttons alike, and with us falling under the latter category, we chose a chicken fillet burger with added bacon, chorizo and halloumi (£13.95). The burger was packed full of our chosen fillings, each chargrilled to perfection, and we were impressed to see that they’d chosen to forego the popular brioche bun in favour of the even better pretzel roll. We’d almost admitted defeat as we worked our way through the last of our calamari (£5.95) and assorted breads
(£3.95), but as our waiter cleared our plates he pointed us towards the desserts sitting pretty on the counter, and as if by magic, our stomachs suddenly found a little extra room. The sticky toffee and chocolate fudge cakes (both £4.45) came served with vanilla ice cream, and were indulgently sweet while still moreishly light and fluffy. We truly can’t imagine ever tiring of the things we love about Rioja, and now with even more to choose from, we’re sure dining at this Doncaster gem will never get old. Southern delight COULD CACTUS JACK’S SWAY RHIANA HUGHES’ OPINION OF TEX-MEX FOOD? ’ve never fully understood the buzz surrounding Tex-Mex cuisine. The blend of Mexican and southern American cooking has always sounded good in theory, but each time I’ve gone out of my way to give it a go, I’ve been left entirely underwhelmed. From chain restaurants to little independent eateries, no two places prepare Tex-Mex in quite the same way, so how can we know when it’s done right? Determined to see what all the fuss is about once and for all, I headed to Doncaster’s Cactus Jack’s to give the popular cuisine another try. A big, bold banner on their website tells customers of their aim, to “give you the best Tex-Mex experience possible”, and the big, bold taste so present in each of their dishes did just that for my partner and I. Those who know me know that as a lover of all things spicy, if I spy a chilli on a menu I see it as a personal challenge. The three chilies next to their Louisiana wings (£5.95 for five) made choosing a starter the easiest thing I’d done all day. Though not blow your head off, reach
I
for the milk spicy, the Louisiana wings were delicious all the same, and still coated the tongue with a nice bit of heat. Cactus Jack’s own special hot sauce was smooth, buttery and bright orange in colour, leaving me full of regret at the fact I’d foolishly declined the offer of lemon fresh wipes. My partner’s starter was slightly less messy, as the soft shell of his smoked pulled pork tacos (£7.95 for three) did a good job of holding things together. Smiles on faces and eyes wide open, we delved into our generously-portioned main courses. So impressed with his starter, my other half went for pulled pork again, but this time opting for the burrito (£11.75). For me, the hearty Tennessee ribs (£16.95) are what cemented my positive new opinion of Tex-Mex. Coated in a Jack Daniels glaze, meat falling off the bone, and served with a mountain of skin-on fries, it was the main course dreams are made of, made better only by the impressively large strawberry daiquiri (£6.95) I was sipping on throughout. It seems for some reason, it’s impossible for my partner and I to turn
down dessert. With eyes bigger than our bellies, we went all in, promising each other we’d head to the gym tomorrow to make up for it. We decided to share the Belgian waffle (£4.95) using spoons as weapons to fight the other off, as the warm waffle melted the ice cream down, and the flavours of the soft dough, sweet cream and cinnamon all merged together beautifully. As we practically waddled down the road back to the car, we agreed that once again, our experience with TexMex was entirely different to all those we’d had before, but this time for the good. Eastside readers… get involved Just like last year we want you to join us in making sure our final verdict is a true reflection of what paying customers across the region really think. Eastside’s team of reviewers will be out and about over the next six months, checking out established and new restaurants, and searching for the best the region has to offer. We will bring our own opinions to bear of course, but we also know Eastside readers are a discerning bunch
who travel the region to experience the best restaurants, bistros and gastro pubs. That’s why we now give our readers a bigger say. After we have done the rounds of the region’s finest eateries we’ll be publishing our shortlist of the best restaurants in all categories, from best pub to best contemporary. Once the shortlists are revealed, we’ll be asking our readers to have their say on the best in each category. We’ll add up the reader votes, put them with our judges’ own views and come up with the best of the best. Sounds a bit like how the voting works on Strictly Come Dancing, doesn’t it? OK, this is Eastside’s version…Strictly Come Dining! That comes later in the year… we’ll be publishing our shortlists in the September issue of Eastside. ***
Eastside Readers’ Choice Award 2019 You can get involved now by casting your vote for the Eastside Readers’ Choice. Whether you select your favourite local cafe, a much-loved Indian or Italian restaurant or any other type of food venue, all votes are equal. Everyone who casts a vote will be entered into a draw, and one lucky winner will receive dinner for two at their favourite restaurant. Voting is free: simply go online to www.rmcmedia.co.uk/events to let us know where you have enjoyed eating out most over the last 12 months. All entries must include a home address and contact details, any multiple entries from the same email address will be disqualified. Closing date: Friday 30 August.

Dare to be different WITH SUCH AN EXPANSIVE MENU, YOU’D BE A FOOL NOT TO STRAY FROM THE TRIED AND TESTED, WRITES OLIVIA WARSOP. alk into Zara’s in the pretty village of Tickhill and you’re instantly taken in by the inviting atmosphere. After being warmly greeted we’re taken to our table and provided with the wine list and drinks menu; wine is measured by the glass (£4.50) or, if you fancy, the bottle from £15.90. We happily start the meal with the almost compulsory papadums (80p) and pickle tray (£2.40) combination, while we looked over the menu. Zara’s prides itself on producing a menu that combines traditional classics with contemporary dishes and it’s clearly working for them; within an hour of opening every table was full of families, friends and couples all cheerfully talking to the friendly staff. As our waiter introduced himself he excitedly told us how in August they will be expanding their menu even further to include a selection of fish and lamb dishes. For starters I decided on the prawn puree (£4.40). Not a dish I’ve had before but certainly something worth going back for; tasty, lightly spiced prawns in a creamy sauce that came served in a delicate shell of soft Indian bread. My vegetarian cousin was similarly impressed with her crispy onion bhajis served with salad (£3.40) insisting that you “can’t beat a classic especially

when it’s done as well as this”. Portion sizes at Zara’s were proving generous and our waiter, Abdul, knowingly asked if we’d like a short break between courses. All over the restaurant the staff were attentively topping up drinks and delivering an approachable and efficient service whilst making it look effortless despite the busy pace. Our theory on portion sizes proved correct when our mains were placed in front of us. Trying something different, my cousin chose the vegetable dupiaza, a mix of perfectly cooked vegetables with herbs, spices and onions in a rich tomato sauce (£7.20) served with a garlic nan (£3.40). Following her earlier example I had also gone with a classic option for my main, the well-loved favourite of chicken korma. The chicken was tender and tasty with the subtle flavour of almonds in the sweet cream sauce (£7.90). Accompanying this was pilau rice with crunchy vegetables (£3.40) and a fluffy cheese nan (£3.40). After a heroic effort at clearing the feast on our table Abdul’s smile was teasing as he asked if we’d care to see the dessert menu. Not ones to back down from a challenge we looked over the range of ice cream desserts before going for a smooth butter and toffee
flavoured ice cream drizzled with a sticky toffee sauce and topped with roasted caramelised pecan nuts (£3.50). If we needed ten minutes longer than might be normal to finish our dessert it was simply because we were savouring every spoonful. While at Zara’s you’re sure to find all your favourite traditional dishes but don’t be surprised to see something a bit different when you look at their menu. If you’re in doubt or want a recommendation, then the staff are more than happy to talk to you about their food and will happily accommodate any needs you have. My cousin was thrilled to see so much variety in the restaurant’s vegetarian options, and it’s clear that at Zara’s a lot of passion goes into making a menu where there really is something for everyone. Full of surprises IT’S ALL HAPPENING IN A LITTLE ROOM ABOVE A PUB IN DONCASTER, WRITES CHRIS WILSON. t’s not my first visit but the setting still takes me by surprise. If you didn’t know it was there it would be very easy to walk straight past Thai at the Sal, a cosy and friendly little restaurant above one of Doncaster’s oldest and most traditional pubs. Owner Chintana (aka Ton) was born and raised in Thailand and cooked for her family at a very early age. She has owned and run Thai restaurants in the Doncaster area for many years and is bringing all expertise to bear in this lovely little venue. I’d call it a hidden gem but that’s not strictly the case. The word is well and truly out about Thai at the Sal, as evidenced by the bustling, happy atmosphere and steady stream of diners on a calm evening in early June. I relished the sudden change in ambience as I walked up the stairs from the pub, pushed open the coloured glass door and took a window seat. If you’re a gin connoisseur you’re in for a treat, as they have a separate gin and tonic menu, and my friend Elizabeth who sensibly lives within walking distance, relaxed into a big glass of Bombay Sapphire gin and Fever Tree tonic.
I
There’s a menu packed with a wide variety of tastes, textures and gradients of heat from mild to fiery and it’s worth taking your time before selecting. We decided we had definitely chosen wisely, sharing three starters. Thai fishcakes (£5.95) were thinner than I’m used to but packed with the flavours of curry, lime and chilli. Corn cakes (£3.95), crispy on the outside and fluffy within with a red curry kick, were another sure-fire winner but the star of our first course was the Tung Tong Money Bags (£4.95), crispy filo pastry parcels packed with zingy marinated minced pork. With dipping sauces to complement every dish we were off to a flying start. For mains the ever-popular Thai green curry with prawns (£9.95) was not stupidly hot but delivered a real kick nonetheless. The prawns were big and juicy, the sauce was very thin but also so very tasty. Our second main was a stirfry called pad prik, a selection of vegetables and chilli in a delicious blend of oyster sauce and vegetables. We chose the beef version (£8.95) and couldn’t fail to be impressed. Side dishes are crucial when it comes
to Thai food and the classic Pad Thai with vegetables (£5.95), a rice noodle stir fry with beansprouts, spring onions, herbs, crushed peanuts and a shot of lime juice, added to the tasty mix. Meanwhile a portion of very sticky Thai rice (£2.50), essential to mop up those delicious sauces, and you have a meal to remember. As well as the G&T menu there’s a very reasonably priced wine list and an excellent bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon (£18.95) was the ideal match for our meal. We were thoroughly sated without feeling too full – there are no stodgy sauces to fill you up in Thai cuisine, it’s all about the taste. And it’s all happening in a little room above a pub in Doncaster. Thai at the Sal The Salutation Inn, 14 South Parade Doncaster, DN1 2DR Tel: 01302 340705

Welcome donation McCarthy and Stone, the developer behind the new William Bradford Court Retirement Living development on Tickhill Road, has donated £350 to Bawtry Community Library. The library has used the funds to purchase a beech finish table, which will be centrally positioned in the library and used to display newspapers. Additionally, a five-shelf bookcase has been purchased to display and organise the library’s evergrowing book collection. Bawtry Community Library, situated just off of Doncaster Road, is a thriving and successful community venture offering the usual library services along with public computers and internet access, printing, photocopying, daily newspapers and a second hand book shop. It also hosts community groups and is a place for local people of all generations. The library is an important part of the neighbourhood providing support and helps to keep the local residents connected. Anne Gray, a volunteer at the library and a member of the Board of Trustees, said: “We are very happy to receive the donation from McCarthy and Stone. As a small community library with a vast amount of visitors, all contributions given to us are greatly appreciated and used in the best way we see fit. We are looking forward to welcoming the retirees of William Bradford Court to the library and the area. Hopefully with this donation we can make their trips to the library even more enjoyable.” Liz Green, regional sales and marketing director at McCarthy and Stone North East, commented: “We were delighted to be able to support the Bawtry Community Library with this donation. Community libraries are a place for everyone to enjoy, providing an escape from isolation and loneliness for many, no matter what age. A number of our homeowners often visit the library, which is just around the corner from the development, are excited to see the updated facilities but we hope the donation will go some way to helping attract new visitors as well.” 54 Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk

One of our other busy events was the annual air show at RAF Finningley – the hotel was always packed to the rafters.” Moving forward 35 years Caz now heads up the catering side at both The Crown Hotel and sister venue Bawtry Hall – an exclusive use wedding and event venue which has now been open a year and a half. Katey Dent, sales director, commented: “Caz is an absolute legend and her food is delicious. The recent Spring Bank half-term saw the return of the Enchanted Fairy Forest event at the Tropical Butterfly House with thousands of visitors treated to a sprinkle of fairy dust during fairy-guided walks through the Enchanted Forest, a magical fantasy world of tiny pixie dwellings, friendly dragons and fairy hideaways. Visitors on the Enchanted Fairy Forest walk encountered a mischievous hob-goblin who loves to steal odd socks on their way to the White Witch’s cottage and herb garden from where she might conjure a spell or a potion to help you make a wish or two. Youngsters could also follow a fun family trail around the wildlife park to find all the different fairies who act as the guardians of the animals, from the Feather Fairy who watches over the birds here at the centre to the Hop Skip fairy who makes sure the wallabies wandering in the wilderness walkthrough don’t have a bump! Many who came in their finest fairy and dragon fancy dress to make a magical memory at the selfie stop also entered the ‘fairy antics selfie’ competition explaining which animal fairy guardian they would be and why? The winning entry came from Ella who decided she would help out the meerkats as a ‘Lookout Fairy Guardian’ so they could go ‘off duty’ for a relaxing break in the holiday sunshine. Spectacular free-flying bird and animal displays took place with the Fairy Guardian of the Enchanted Forest in peril from the Goblin King. These fantastical bird and animal displays saw owls, parrots, rats, skunks, macaws, egrets and a vulture all helping... or hindering the Fairy Guardian with a little help from the audience who were called upon to help her save the enchanted forest. The event coincided with the British & Irish Association of Zoos & Aquariums (BIAZA) ‘Love Your Zoo’ week during which members of the public are encouraged to visit their local zoo and or aquarium and learn about the amazing work they do, particularly when it comes to conservation.
Get fired-up for BBQ season Burnt sausages, raw chicken and other BBQ horrors can be consigned to the dustbin of history as The School of Artisan Food shares the secrets of cooking with fire and smoke ahead of the summer season. Based on the idyllic Welbeck Estate in the heart of Sherwood Forest, the school is running a series of one day courses throughout the summer designed for anybody who wants to avoid the common mistakes of alfresco dining and become a BBQ master. Led by expert butcher Chris Moorby along with his Chris and Tom Moorby son Tom Moorby, Fire & Smoke – BBQ Cooking is a hands-on course that reveals how to work with this most ancient of artisan cooking techniques and create a range of delicious dishes over charcoal. It’s a hands-on masterclass for both BBQ novices and seasoned campaigners in how to prepare and grill a selection of meats, fish and vegetables; as well as make delicious marinades, sauces and dry rubs and how best to use traditional smoking techniques. After cooking a range of foods, including red meats, poultry, cheeses and even sweets, newly acquired BBQ skills are shared in a jointly cooked meal from the grill before going home for the ultimate test amongst family and friends. The one day course is available on dates until October. For more information, visit www.schoolofartisanfood.org
