elcome to the July edition of Eastside. There’s no better place to start this month than with the news of Doncaster being granted city status as part of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Celebrations. It feels like it’s been a long time coming but is hugely deserved we look at the impact it will have and how Doncaster can take huge strides forward. Bringing further attention to the city will be ArtBomb 22, a free festival that brings artists and environmentalists together together to highlight the global climate emergency. Elsewhere we look at the amazing work done by Rotherham Hospice - and how you can help them - and get into a festival mood for summer. Doncaster soul singer Rumbi Tauro will be flying the flag for the city with live performances lined up for the coming months.

HUNTERS OF BAWTRY ACHIEVES ‘STANDARD OF EXCELLENCE’ TO MAKE THE ESTAS SHORTLIST FOR 2022. unters of Bawtry has been recognised for delivering outstanding customer service to its clients, making the shortlist of The ESTAS - the biggest award scheme in the UK residential property industry. The ESTAS honours the best, agents, conveyancers and mortgage advisors in the UK. The awards are powered by the ESTAS online customer review platform, which enables property professionals to demonstrate the customer service standards they deliver for their clients. ESTAS reviews can only be completed at the end of the property transaction and a strict verification process ensures reviews are genuine. This year’s shortlist has been calculated following the evaluation of 660,000 customer review ratings. This year for the first time ESTAS have introduced a ‘Standard of Excellence’ which all shortlisted firms must attain to make the shortlist. announced at the 19th annual ESTAS ceremony held in London on 14 October. The awards will be presented by the UK’s favourite property expert Phil Spencer in front of 1,200 of the UK’s top property professionals. Spencer said: “The ESTAS Awards are based on real feedback, from real clients experiencing real service so they provide genuine proof of the service levels that a firm is delivering to clients. Now more than ever high quality customer service is crucial if home movers are going to realise their dream of getting the property they set their hearts on.” Simon Brown, founder of ESTAS says “At ESTAS we’re creating a community for best practice property professionals who all share a passion for delivering great service and a belief that service really does matter.” Simon, Sacha, Helen and Clare of Hunters Bawtry added: “We are very proud to be shortlisted. t was the news we’d all been waiting for. Doncaster is now a city, having been - finally granted the new status as part of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations. It was given the honour along with seven other locations. The news has been met with a huge wave of positivity, particularly after three failed attempts in recent years. It’s a just reward for all the hard work put in by ‘Team Doncaster’, which was made up of the main public sector organisations and businesses across the borough.
I
As part of the Platinum Jubilee Civic Honours Competition they successfully demonstrated how unique communities and distinct local identity make Doncaster deserving of the status and showcased the pride in the city, its achievements and its future aspirations. “This is brilliant news for Doncaster,” said Mayor Ros Jones. “I am utterly delighted that our borough has been recognised in this way as part of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. “To become one of the UK’s newest cities underlines our firmly held belief
that we think, act and feel like a city. I’ve said for a long time that we are a city in all but name and now we can proudly say that Doncaster has achieved city status. “This royal seal of approval will mean we can continue with our vision to drive our borough forward and realise our aspirations. Being a city will help boost the profile of Doncaster on many different levels from attracting new and growing business, underlining Doncaster as a tourist destination, upping our role on the national stage and giving us a stronger voice.”

016 ESide July22 16/06/2022 11:15 Page 1
The judging panel for the Platinum Jubilee Civic Honours Competition highlighted the following reasons for why Doncaster’s bid was a winning one: Community spirit – Doncaster’s community spirit and resilience was demonstrated during the floods of 2019 as the community rallied to provide relief. It has more than 70 places of worship and spirituality, with its mosques and gurdwaras serving as pop-up vaccination centres during the Covid-19 pandemic. Rich history - Originally a Roman settlement, Doncaster is almost 2000 years old. Its industrial heritage is built on rail and coal, with The Flying Scotsman and The Mallard both built there. Doncaster is synonymous with the St. 16 Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk
Leger, founded in 1776 and the oldest classic horse race in the world. Royal link - The link between the Royal Family and horseracing is central to the relationship between Doncaster and Buckingham Palace, with regular attendance and involvement in the St Leger Festival by the Royal Family. The Prince of Wales (later George IV), The Duke of Clarence (later William IV), Queen Victoria, King Edward VII, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother, and HM The Queen have attended the St Leger Festival. Speaking about how this will benefit the wider region, Dan Fell, Chief Executive Officer of Doncaster Chamber, said: “The campaign to earn city status is one that we have been pursuing for a long time and it is tremendously
gratifying to see all that hard work pay off. “With both Doncaster and Sheffield, the South Yorkshire region is now home to two cities, which means that we will have an even bigger seat at the table when it comes to engaging national government. With this enhanced platform, we will be in a better position than ever before to drive the levelling up agenda in South Yorkshire, to hold policy-makers to account and to fight for the interests of our business communities. “With a leading airport, strong connectivity to the rest of the country, established inks in the rail industry and now official city status, Doncaster is truly developing into a fantastic place to do business. We really have come a long way in the past few years.” Oliver Coppard, who was recently

appointed Mayor of South Yorkshire, was equally enthused about the news and echoed some of Dan Fell’s sentiments: “Here in South Yorkshire we have huge potential and a bright future. So I’m delighted Doncaster has finally been given the city status it deserves. “Doncaster’s city status will bring in new business, spark innovation and spur investment. More than anything it will mean more opportunities for people across our communities. Now we just need to make sure Doncaster is home to the HQ of Great British Railways.” Doncaster Racecourse is one of main draws for visitors into the city and is joined by the likes of Yorkshire Wildlife Park, CAST and the recently-refurbished Doncaster, Gallery, Library and Museum. With world class markets to get lost in, country estates and parks to explore and fine restaurants to enjoy, the positivity
goes on and on. Becoming the national home for Great British Railways would only increase this appeal further. Local businesses have been equally receptive to the news and have been quick to see the potential created by the newly-crowned city status. Simon Barton operates Hunters Estate Agency in Bawtry and was overjoyed with the news when we spoke to him. “The royal seal of approval is huge honour and can only be beneficial to drive the area forward with us now on an equal footing with Sheffield as the only two cities in South Yorkshire,” he said. “With city status it will help with the profile of Doncaster and the surrounding area and can help to enhance our reputation and hopefully attract new businesses which in turn will enhance the local economy. “With hopefully an influx of new
businesses we will see more and more people wanting to relocate to the area which will in turn help to underpin the housing market.” Carolyn Poole, purveyor of stylish boutique Chique can also see great benefits to her business as well as the surrounding area. “It’s a great moment for Doncaster people to be proud of,” she said. “Doncaster now being a city can only mean that businesses will grow from strength to strength. “My boutique has been open for almost 20 years now and I have welcomed visitors from far and wide as well as from overseas. I’m just excited for us to now welcome yet more new customers exploring our city and am immensely proud to be known as a resident and business owner within the new city of Doncaster.” Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk 17

Introducing Rumbi Tauro THE DONCASTER SOUL SINGER RELEASES HER NEW SINGLE ON 1 JULY. he smooth soul sounds of Doncaster’s Rumbi Tauro are the perfect soundtrack to your summer. Ahead of an appearance at Sheffield’s Tramlines Festival later this month – she will be performing on the Library Stage on 23 July – Rumbi is releasing her new single, Take Care, on 1 July on all digital platforms. The track was written in October 2020 and is the ideal introduction to her music, which draws parallels with the likes of Laura Mvula, Lianne La Havas and even a bit of Corinne Bailey Rae. We caught up with the Zimbabweborn singer to find out more.
T
Tell us about the new single.
Take Care was written in October 2020 and I have been waiting for the right time to release the track. This song is all about the idea of a reciprocated love, a love where the other person puts in as much effort as you. I recorded this song at Higher Rhythm Studios in Doncaster, 20 Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk
I worked on it with producer Joe Brown.
Who are some of your favourite artists?
What inspired you to get into music?
Alicia Keys, J Cole, Adele, Jacob Banks, Yebba, Tracy Chapman, Stevie Wonder.
I started piano lessons at the age of five and that’s where I started to find my love for music. I started singing at church and have taken it from there all the way to today. I felt like I was living in my own world whenever I was singing. Ever since, when I perform live I try and remember how free I felt when I started singing as a child and try to go back there as a sense of gravity. Do you write your own material?
Yes, I started writing in 2020! Lockdown 1.0 gave me the time I needed to finally attempt writing my own lyrics and music. I released my first ever body of music in July 2020, which was a four track EP titled ‘The Process’. Since then I’ve released two singles and ‘Take Care’ will be added to my musical collection on 1 July.
What else are you working on?
Working on new music with other inspiring producers and musicians to create music that makes me feel alive. To listen to the new single, or find out more, visit www.rumbitauro.com

Emergency on planet earth OPEN YOUR MIND TO ARTBOMB 22, A FREE ARTS FESTIVAL THAT EXPLORES AND DEBATES CLIMATE CHANGE. lobal Climate Emergency will be at the heart of an experimental arts festival which returns to Doncaster this summer. ArtBomb 22: Alternative Ecologies, a free event which runs from 11-14 August, has been designed to provoke fierce debate across current environmental and ecological thinking. It will playfully and provocatively explore the life of plants, food, water and transport and their role in the health and well-being of local communities and in the global context. “ArtBomb Festival 22 asks the urgent questions that will challenge complacency and ensure that Doncaster and its communities can explore and debate the climate emergency,” said ArtBomb’s lead curator, Mike Stubbs. Presenting installations, exhibitions, workshops, talks, music, films, street art and more, ArtBomb by emerging and established artists, both local and international, the festival showcases the work of artists in collaboration with environmentalists and celebrate their challenging vision and ambition within one of the UK’s newest cities and its environs and beyond. The festival has invited more than 30 artists to work alongside a wide range of environmentalists to explore cutting edge ecological research and provocation, including signposting Doncaster’s most valuable ecological asset - its vast peatland - and the biodiversity it supports. Internationally significant artists include feminist/anarchist, mezzosoprano, Loré Lixenberg; reciter of Beckett and Shakespeare; performance artist, Filipos Tsitsopoulos; live coder/choreographer Joana Chicau, and bee-keeper-techno DJ Bioni Samp who featured in Vice last year as their artist of the year… this is not run of the mill stuff! Cllr Nigel Ball, Portfolio Holder for Public Health, Leisure and Planning,
G
RIGHT: Miranda Whall BELOW: Sidney Sparks
commented: “ArtBomb 22 brings a vital spark to Doncaster’s burgeoning culture calendar and this year’s theme is one that encourages our communities to engage with the ecological future of Doncaster region in a highly creative and fun platform involving local artists and communities as well as those from further afield. I look forward to experiencing it in August.” ArtBomb 22’s programme of residencies and commissions begins from the ArtBomb Hub at 60 Hallgate and spills into the streets and urban space to provide a rich and compelling mix of experiences designed to surprise and entertain. ArtBomb is piloting a series of experiments in public space and place-

the dying - and operated as a teaching and research facility. There are now over 200 hospices registered with the CQC (Care Quality Commission) in the UK, providing care for around 200,000 people whilst offering bereavement support to a further 40,000. Rotherham Hospice is part of this number and has been at the heart of the community, supporting local people since its opening in 1996. It’s origins can be traced back to 1988 when the Rotherham Hospice Appeal was formed with the purpose of raising £1million to provide hospice care for the people of Rotherham. By 1993, over £550,000 had been raised, and the search for a suitable site began. Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council offered up the site of its old horticultural nurseries, which fulfilled all the criteria required. And so the building of Rotherham Hospice was completed in May 1996, with the iffiest day hospice patients welcomed a short time later. In September 1997 the In-Patient Unit opened providing four single, en-suite rooms, and a four-bed ward, further extended by a ten-bed extension, which eventually opened in April 2011.

mazing. Can you think of a better word to describe the exceptional care provided by a hospice at the most difficult of times? I can’t. Sadly I have experienced hospice care first-hand on two occasions, for two of my grandparents whom both had cancer, and can’t praise the care they received highly enough. Talking about dying is never easy, experiencing and accepting it even worse, but the people who work at these institutions are, in a word, simply amazing. The modern hospice movement is actually relatively new - but has become one of the UK’s greatest success stories. It was through a friendship that she struck up with a patient that Cicely Saunders, a trained nurse, saw that society needed a better place to care for the terminally ill. The patient had spent the last two months of his life on a surgical ward, simply because there was nowhere else for him to go. In 1967, Saunders (who later became Dame Cicely Saunders) oversaw the creation of the UK’s first modern hospice - St Christopher’s Hospice in London. St Christopher’s provided physical, emotional and spiritual care for

Fundraising contributes a huge portion of Rotherham Hospice’s annual budget
The modern hospice now has an In-Patient Unit with 14 single, ensuite rooms furnished and equipped to an extremely high standard. For those who would prefer, and are able to receive care in their own homes, the Hospice at Home team provides the right level of support to patients and their families, including a 24/7 advice line. Hospice care is available free of charge to people needing specialist palliative care, although it’s a common misconception that everyone who goes to the hospice will die there. “While many patients feel most comfortable receiving end-of-life care in the hospice, around half of patients are there for symptom management, and will return home, often continuing to be cared for by the Hospice at Home team,” said Anne-Marie Parkin. “Listening to patients’ individual needs and giving them choices in their end-oflife care is fundamental to us.” Hospice care aims to improve the quality of life and wellbeing to those who have a terminal illness or a long term condition that cannot be cured, also known as life-limiting. It can be provided at any stage of a person’s condition and can, as mentioned by Anne-Marie, include symptom management as well as social, practical, emotional and spiritual support. It helps people live as fully and as well as they can to the end of their lives, however 24 Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk
long that may be. As an addition to their services, Rotherham Hospice are proud to offer complementary therapy, hairdressing services, freshly cooked food on site, and a beautiful garden for patients and their visitors to enjoy. All hospice patients and their loved ones have access to pre- and postbereavement support, including Sunbeams, a specialist support group for children, emotional and psychological support, a social worker and signposting to other services you may need. “Perhaps the most important thing Rotherham Hospice can offer is compassion and kindness,” added AnneMarie. “It could be a friendly ear to talk to during a long night, a cup of tea made during a difficult moment, or just knowing there is somebody there when you need them.” It’s a sentiment echoed by a Rotherham family who experienced the
hospice‘s outstanding services recently: “The remaining days my beloved mum had could not have been in a more perfect place - surrounded by wonderful people, filled with such compassion and kindness - you have touched our hearts and I know you made my mum feel special.” None of this vital care would be possible without the amazing support the hospice receives from the local community. While the hospice works closely with the NHS to ensure the best possible care, Rotherham Hospice is, and always has been, a charity and needs to raise £3million each year to keep going. This has been made more difficult in recent years due to the pandemic pausing many in-person fundraising events, but they are hopeful that the community can once again come together to support them.

Where care comes from the heart LET LIFEWAYS CARE LIMITED BRING THEIR SPECIALIST COMPLEX CARE SERVICES TO YOUR DOOR. omplex care illnesses are burdens you shouldn’t have to bear alone. Lifeways Care Limited are on hand 24 hours a day, seven days a week to help you share this burden, providing specialist care for a range of chronic or long-term health conditions. Lifeways Care Limited was established in 2022 and is owned and run by Kudzai-Martin and Saneliso Mandizha, a couple who have lived in Doncaster for 19 years. They have over 20 years’ of clinical and leadership experience and can bring their expertise to your door. Registered Manager Kudzai is an educator by profession, having been a teacher for 22 years, before leaving to pursue a career in theological studies. A leader from the heart, he has a strong passion for building teams that succeed, adopting this ethos for Lifeways Care Limited. Kudzai’s role is the overall running of the company, training as well as looking for new business. “We believe that every individual has the God given right to live a dignified life however they choose,” he said. “Complex care is a specialist form of support available to those with a chronic or long-term health condition, who require extra assistance to manage their symptoms and complete day-to-day activities.

“This type of care is considerably different from domiciliary care because it usually involves medical intervention of some sort and involvement with clinicians and nurses that specialise in that individual’s particular condition.” Clinical manager Saneliso is a UK trained nurse who completed her university course in 2003 at the University of Hertfordshire. She worked at Montague, Royal Hallamshire and Northern General Hospitals during her tenure in the NHS, before working in more than 20 other hospitals as an agency nurse. Saneliso also worked as a theatre nurse and then did a long stint in ITU/ICU, becoming a specialist in that area. Saneliso and Kudzai have stories to tell. Saneliso, having survived a benign brain tumor, severe nerve damage to the feet, and gone under the surgeon’s knife seven times, all this time being cared for by husband Kudzai (who has been under the surgeon’s knife five times), is the reason for the motto, ‘Where care comes from the heart’. As a couple, they not only talk about compassionate care, but have gone through horrendous medical experiences, and come out of it. Their whole persona and loving care can be felt and seen even from their staff. Lifeways Care Limited has its office at Mexborough Business Centre in
Saneliso Mandizha
Doncaster and run their activities in the three counties of Nottinghamshire, South Yorkshire, Lincolnshire and surrounding areas. Their services are available to young adults (18 years) right up to the elderly who might be suffering from any complex care illnesses. “The aim of complex care at home is to provide support around an individual’s needs and enable them to retain their independence as much as possible,” said Saneliso. Lifeways Care’s areas of speciality include: • Neurological conditions including multiple sclerosis (MS), motor neurone disease (MND), Parkinson’s, Huntington’s and stroke. • Catheter, bowel and stoma care. • Tracheostomy care. • Gastrostomy care, including PEG feeding. • Oral suctioning. • Nasopharyngeal suctioning. • Oxygen therapy. • Acquired brain injury. • Spinal cord injury. • NIV/ BIPAP/NIPPY. • Cough Assist. The complex care provided by Lifeways Care Limited is person-centred, which is a top priority for KudzaiMartin and Saneliso. Providing complex care in a client’s home enables them to be taken care of in their own environment, allowing them to retain their independence as much as possible. “Not only is our care individualised to the specific client, but we have added advantages in that there are doctors, clinicians, nurses and trained carers who are there 24/7,” added Saneliso. Although dealing with such difficult circumstances, at the most difficult of times, the team at Lifeways Care Limited still find rewarding aspects to the care that they provide. “One of the most beautiful things about caring for the terminally ill is the sense of joy, and fulfilment that it

brings,” explains Kudzai. “It is out of this that the motto ‘Where care comes from the heart’ came from. An important aspect that comes from our services is that each day, we learn something new, as we never know what is in store for us.” Complex care differs from general domiciliary care because clients tend to require more hours because of the nature of their illness and normally they are long-term contracts. A domiciliary care can have 30 clients, while a complex care specialist company, such as Lifeways Care Limited, can have six clients, for
example. Presently, Lifeways Care Limited are able to take in more clients, as the team is growing, with a number of experienced staff joining. They also take private clients, and clients from Councils and others. “Why should people choose us?” asks Kudzai. “Firstly, you will feel safe and protected by our staff. You will also have as much freedom as possible to do the things you want to do – regardless of your respective needs. “Our staff will protect your dignity, rights and respect you as an individual. We make sure you receive a reliable service that is not rushed.” So, if yourself or a loved one requires specialist care, choose a company where care comes from the heart. IN BRIEF
Reach for the skies Based on the former RAF Doncaster site, the South Yorkshire Aircraft Museum is home to a vast collection of aircraft and helicopters from the first years of flight, right up to the modern day. From the biplanes flown at the 1909 Doncaster Airshow (the first to be held in the UK) to military fast jets like the Harrier and Meteor, visitors can marvel at the aircraft on display. The displays are both inside and out, meaning you can enjoy the museum whatever the weather, and there’s also and on-site shop and small cafe. Their next event is an ‘Open Cockpit Weekend’ on 16-17 July where you will be able to climb into your favourite aircraft. There’ll be all different types, from fighter jets and bombers to aerobatic and other ‘civvy’ types. Small transport planes and the cockpit of a ‘Mighty Vulcan’ will also be on show along with a range of Canberras in different roles. South Yorkshire Aircraft Museum is a registered charity and staffed by volunteers. Tickets are priced £6.50 for adults and £3 for children under 16. Visit www.southyorkshireaircraftmuseum.org.uk to find out more.
Standard of Excellence Hunters of Bawtry has been recognised for delivering outstanding customer service to its clients, making the shortlist of The ESTAS - the biggest award scheme in the UK residential property industry. Six-hundred agents, conveyancers and mortgage brokers have been shortlisted around the UK making them one of the top property firms in the UK. The regional and national winners will be announced at the 19th annual ESTAS ceremony held in London on 14 October. The awards will be presented by the UK’s favourite property expert Phil Spencer in front of 1,200 of the UK’s top property professionals. Simon, Sacha, Helen and Clare of Hunters Bawtry said: “We are very proud to be shortlisted. We take our levels of customer service very seriously because we know clients have a choice. Hopefully we can go one step further and win at The ESTAS Awards in October.”
Fibre broadband saving Residents in Doncaster, one of the UK’s newest cities, can save up to £70 on their full fibre broadband deal to celebrate the Queen’s 70 years on the throne, thanks to Pure Broadband. Tony Jopling, Pure Broadband’s managing director, said: “We have been welcoming new customers in Doncaster to our really good value full fibre packages since we launched there last summer on the CityFibre network. And now is the time to give something back. “Doncaster is thoroughly deserving of its new status and we want to do our bit to help the city celebrate. If you know anyone who is looking to switch broadband provider, take advantage of our Platinum Jubilee offer to mark Doncaster’s landmark achievement.” The offer, which runs throughout June, will also apply to existing customers who have come to the end of their existing contract. Check if Pure Broadband’s new full fibre service is available in your area here: www.purebroadband.net
Lost Chord looking for new trustees Leading South Yorkshire dementia charity Lost Chord is looking for three new trustees. Lost Chord is the charity that provides vital interactive musical experiences for people living with dementia in care homes and day centres both across the region and nationally. There are currently vacancies for trustees who have legal and financial backgrounds as well as somebody with knowledge of care homes. “Ideally, we would be looking for a solicitor and an accountant to join us as we take Lost Chord in exciting new directions,” said the charity’s Chief Executive, Clare Langan. “We are also looking for somebody who has a good knowledge of care home management. “This is not an onerous commitment with meetings just six to eight times in the year, but their support will prove invaluable as we explore great new ways to expand our services and take our music out to the people who need it most.” Anybody interested in applying for any of the three roles should contact Clare on 07915 075047.
