“We design and manufacture all our own units and, in most cases, make any size required. This means a far better looking and working kitchen or bedroom.” Established in 1985, DC Interiors – which has showrooms in Maltby and Edenthorpe – have built up a strong reputation over the years, with much custom coming from word-of-mouth recommendations. All plumbing, gas and electrical work can be included as part of the fitting service, and most projects are completed in two to three days. DC Interiors has now fitted over 10,000 kitchens, bedrooms and studies, all uniquely designed and produced in their own factory. Over the last few years, the business
has gained recognition for designing and installing a state-of-the-art kitchen on BBC One’s DIY SOS and for providing a free-of-charge ‘milk’ kitchen to the Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice. Their largest customer source is through recommendation. Time after time their customers recommend them to their friends and family, making up 70 per cent of their business. At DC Interiors, you will find a business big enough to cope, but small enough to care for its customers. The staff pride themselves on their friendly, personal approach, with no pressure or hard-sell tactics. Why not give them a call today and see what they can do for you? RETROSPECTIVE
Eat your heart out, the home counties. Doncaster and the east side is now the place to be as the big influx of the young, aspiring and ambitious or simply prosperous continues. Pat Roberts goes in search of them as she presents an everyday story of country sloanes. Some quite posh people live Eastside. Posh? Well, Robin Hood, who, it might be argued, started it all, is reputed to have had rather good connections in spite of his extraordinarily liberal habits. And the Dukeries are no myth. Great aristocratic mansions were built at Worksop, Welbeck, Rufford, Newstead, Thorseby and Clumber and, though little remains of the elevated society that supported them, a new kind of gentrification has moved in. Sloane gentrification, by courtesy of the fast train and its 100-minute thrash between Doncaster and London. Heaven only knows what the natives make of it all. And they’re not all descendants of D H Lawrence and Fred Trueman. Lieut. Col. Hugh Neill, Lord Lieutenant of South Yorkshire, former High Sheriff of Hallamshire, former Master Cutler and Captain of Industry has helped to lift the status of Lindrick Common above that of a mere golf course. The late Sir Wilton Lee, Master Cutler more than once, lived in the same neighbourhood. And the man who, perhaps more than anybody, inherited at least some of Robin Hood’s high ideals, Sir Stuart Goodwin, had a house at Retford. Steel man, tool maker and philanthropist, Sir Stuart and Lady Goodwin gave a lot more to Sheffield than the wretched fountain. Going back a bit, aside from the Duke of Portland (Welbeck), the Duke of Newcastle (Clumber) and Earl Manvers (Thoresby), Lord Byron gave the place a touch of class, even though the poor chap and his mother mother were too poor to live at Newstead Abbey, when he inherited the property. Those were the days, of course, when the Dukeries were fashionable. Today, it’s not easy to discover where the leaders of the beau monde 16 Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk
hang out. Prettily manicured places like Gamston (green as a snooker table and so handy for the private jet) and Bothamsall (within easy reach of Welbeck, Clumber and Thoresby) are uncannily bereft of anything so vulgar as a pub, where a chat with the locals might uncover the whereabouts of the toffs, who live in houses that smell of wax polish and wet labradors, smoking log fires and breakfast kippers (all day long), threadbare tweeds and chewed green wellies.
Where are the ancient porticos that have never suffered the indignity of ding-dong doorbells, the walled herbaceous borders that have never been tarnished by a meretricious dahlia, the paths that have never been debased by crazy paving? Yes, we all know the Royals have often stayed at Sandbeck, especially when the present Earl of Scarbrough’s father was Lord Chamberlain, but beyond that, where are the old manor houses, old mills, old vicarages, old rectories and weathered country seats, surrounded by mature gardens and game-keepered grounds, invisible from the road, because the drive is miles long? Where are all the bumpy courtyards littered with Land Rovers and gung-ho estates, preferably in drab green and made by Volvo, Subaru and Citroen? (Range Rovers and Mercedes G-Wagens lack that well-bred feel for field sportiness, so necessary when being drive to the hounds, or Osberton Horse Trials.
Where are the loos lined with P G Wodehouse, A A Milne, Punch, Playboy and Private Eye, crossword puzzles and cartoons by Osbert Lancaster? Where are the creakingly old, burnished floorboards and the antique Persians? Where are the ancient porticos that have never suffered the indignity of ding-dong doorbells, the walled herbaceous borders that have never been tarnished by a meretricious dahlia, the paths that have never been debased by crazy paving? For Heaven’s sake, where are the right addresses? Many of them, you might be forgiven for thinking, disappeared under the slurry heaps. Well, not quite. But, the coal mines, with their decades of unspeakable detritus and their allpervading stink, scarcely added to the area’s residential appeal. Nothing drives a Sloane out of town faster than a rair-ly, rair-ly, gharst-ly pong. But, then came the cleaning up of the coal industry – Bevercoates is positively sterile – which created a new situation. Lighter industry now covers the face of the earth; that and farmland, for this, even before they opened (and, indeed, closed) the coal mines is farming country. Not that it will stay that way for much longer. Now that we are victims of the EEC’s agricultural policy, our lovely wheat and poppy landscapes are threatened with the take-over by reckless sports and leisure entrepreneurs, to be turned into some corner of a foreign field that is forever Disneyland. But the old farm workers’ cottages and the neatly proportioned, red brick land owners’ houses are still intact, luring the upwardly mobile from the vile south-east to live out their lives as high speed commuters. Well, anything’s better than the Channel Tunnel, isn’t it? After all, there’s the Grive and Rufford Hunt (a good excuse for an early morning snifter, or two in Retford on Boxing Day), the St Leger,

Doncaster and north east of Sheffield. Bawtry is another township. So is Retford. The rest are hamlets, which may help to explain the dearth of pubs in Gamston et al. “Tickhill, Bawtry and Retford all have a reasonable level of high quality housing and prices have escalated in line with more general trends. The big demand is for cottages, the older the better. Here there has been a near doubling of prices.
After all, there’s the Grive and Rufford Hunt (a good excuse for an early morning snifter, or two in Retford on Boxing Day), the St Leger, Doncaster Butterscotch, and The Forge in Tickhill, a small restaurant with a big heart.
Doncaster Butterscotch, and The Forge in Tickhill, a small restaurant with a big heart. Tickhill’s not a bad place to live, even if you do have to go through Maltby to get there. It has some nice shops; Grapevine, which does designer clothes and Homeworks, a wonderful little place for Sloaney impedimenta – china cache-pots, silver or green velvet photograph frames, lace, embroidery, dried flowers.
But the old farm workers’ cottages and the neatly proportioned, red brick land owners’ houses are still intact, luring the upwardly mobile from the vile south-east to live out their lives as high speed commuters. Well, anything’s better than the Channel Tunnel, isn’t it? Not many places as small as Tickhill can boast of having a castle. This one was once among the most important in the north. Even more remarkable, Bothamsall Castle, west of the village and probably the earthwork of a Norman castle. Blyth, an old village of great architectural merit, has a building founded as a hospital in the 12th century for the care of lepers. Roche Abbey (Maltby can’t be all bad) is a ruined Cistercian house founded in 1147. Garlic planted by the monks still grows here. Tony Chappell of G A Property Services in Doncaster, points out that Tickhill is not so much a village as a township; the most notable, in attractive residential terms, in the area south of
A cottage fetching £50,000 twelve to 18 months ago would realise £100,000 today.” That’s not the limit. The best houses in the district would fetch £300,000, but there are only about halfa-dozen of them. They are lived in by people, who have business (and pretty healthy business by the sound of it) in Sheffield, Doncaster, or Rotherham. “There really isn’t all that much old, highquality property about and the rare £300,000 house would be one surrounded by a lot of land, or containing a great many rooms, or both. The explanation is that this was once a thinlypopulated agricultural area. In places like Firbeck, which have a lot of appeal today, there was no call for anything other than a small level of housing. Consequently, there isn’t the supply of old cottages for 1980’s commuters.” But, it is these hamlets that have become commuter friendly to the affluent with two, or three cars. The area is supplied by an excellent road network. Fast journeys by road as well as rail offer a certain appeal. “But most people,” says Tony Chappell, “are what you might call local commuters – Sheffield, Doncaster, Rotherham. Yes, some travel to London, but not five days a week. Two, or three days, perhaps.” The attraction of Tickhill and, to some extent, Bawtry is that they are not just lineal villages, or, if you will, townships. They give the feeling of age, because the main streets contain the oldest properties. There is modern development, but it is hidden at the back. “The large scale development in and around Doncaster came after the Second World War and the pit villages, even where the pits have closed offered only low quality housing. The more desirable properties are scarce, in great demand nowadays and consequently increasing in value all the time.” All that also goes for the environs of that other cradle of culture, Rotherham. Whiston has some pretty cottages and, praise by, good pubs and places to eat. Moorgate, well what can you say about Moorgate? Leading out of town, it was once lined with mansions. They got turned into hotels and rest homes and insurance offices and the gate
to the moor was obliterated in the sixties and seventies by houses, not bad houses as modern houses go. At least they have gardens, which is more that you get in the eighties. Into Rotherham’s embrace too, come Scholes and Wentworth. Scholes, notable for Keppel’s Column, built in 1782 by the 2nd Marquis of Rockingham in honour of Admiral Keppel, was once part of the Fitzwilliam estate. The column is actually in Scholes coppice, which adjoins the village. The grease and fever houses, plus a few dwellings built to house the overspill for the nearly mining village of Thorpe Hesley, have offered incredible potential to today’s house hunters, yearning as they are for a return to the days before soulless housing estates and tickytacky boxes and foreign flowering cherry trees swallowed up our green fields. Scholes was a picture postcard model village, self-contained with its own school, post office, shops, pub and cricket ground. Most of the people who lived there worked for Earl Fitzwilliam, who had built the village and owned it. Wit the demise of all the forelock tugging stuff, Scholes got a bit shabby, but at least the houses remained standing and now the wheel has turned full circle. Scholes has been done up – rather obviously so at the moment. The old cottages and shops, the school and the post office have become executive houses, which will improve with a bit of weathering. From Scholes, you can see Wentworth and the 18th century Wentworth Woodhouse, a Palladian country house, with a 600 ft frontage, vastly underrated.
“But most people,” says Tony Chappell, “are what you might call local commuters – Sheffield, Doncaster, Rotherham. Yes, some travel to London, but not five days a week. Two, or three days, perhaps.” Wentworth village has an imposing church, a warm and friendly pub, The Rockingham Arms. Up and down the main street and in the little lanes and paths that lead off it, there are old cottages, built for the workers in Wentworth Woodhouse’s better days. Many look ominously ripe for what builders euphemistically describe as conversion. Indeed, some converting has already taken place, but ask around about the availability of property in Wentworth and you won’t get very far. Answers include: “The Estate owns it,” and “Nothing ever comes on the market,” and “Eee love, I don’t know.” Perhaps the locals simply want to keep their houses to themselves. And, at a time when even Princess Anne feels the need to ally herself with an organisation which aims to keep country village houses in country village hands, it’s quite right they should. * This article and the subsequent advertisements on the following pages are all taken from our original June 1989 edition. MILESTONES
Magic moments FROM BENEFICIAL RELATIONSHIPS TO THE ADVENT OF SOCIAL MEDIA, CHRIS WILSON LOOKS BACK AT SIGNIFICANT MILESTONES IN EASTSIDE’S 30-YEAR HISTORY. t’s been an interesting experience looking back at the archives as we celebrate 30 years of Eastside, the quality magazine for Doncaster, Rotherham and North Notts. Flick through past copies and, as with any publication, it is amusing to see how fashions and fads can change over the years. Hemlines rise and fall and rise again, hairstyles constantly evolve and it’s not just our taste in clothes and personal grooming that change... look through some early food reviews and see how fussy and old-fashioned some of the dishes that passed for ‘fine dining’ in previous decades look today.
I
But Eastside’s great strength has been its ability to evolve over the years, and that includes building long-lasting partnerships with key local businesses. It’s significant that our very first cover story back in June 1989 was connected to Doncaster Racecourse. We’ve been regular visitors to Town Moor over the years, celebrated the many improvements at the course and joining in the excitement as the St Leger Festival has grown in stature. Our September issue is always dedicated to the four days of sporting excellence that climax with the running of the St Leger itself, the oldest Classic horse race in the world. 26 Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk

MILESTONES
Another major annual event which dominates our thinking every autumn is a relatively recent innovation, the Eastside Restaurant Awards. Features on local restaurants and reviews have been a cornerstone of Eastside for the last 30 years and our awards dinner, a celebration of the excellence to be found across the region in eateries of all types and sizes, has grown over the last decade to become a factor in driving up standards in the local dining out scene. Our awards dinner itself is an opportunity for restaurant, café and bar owners and their hard-working staff to come together with local foodies, and win or lose, a great night is always had by all. This year’s event takes us to a new venue – the Hilton Garden Inn at Doncaster Racecourse – on Monday 7 October. See elsewhere in this publication for the latest news, and also check out where our reviewers have been eating this month.

any of you may have thought the most revered awards ceremonies of the year had already taken place. But the Oscars, the BAFTAs, the Golden Globes... they ain’t got nothin’ on 2013’s most fabulous awards do. That’s right folks, the Eastside Restaurant Awards was truly this year’s most hotlyanticipated – and, of course, most glamorous – bash.Well, what more would you expect from the stars of the South Yorkshire dining scene? We may not have been sure of the reaction we’d receive when we first decided to hold the inaugural Eastside Restaurant Awards – but we needn’t have worried. As 150 guests poured into The Crown Hotel in Bawtry to the sounds of electronic violinist Alexandra on awards night, the air fizzed with anticipation and excitement. Though the competition was naturally keen, we were overwhelmed with how many local restaurants had entered into the spirit of the awards. It was fantastic to see all of the nominees together in one room, celebrating the superb quality of eateries to be found in our region. When it came to choosing the winners of each category, however, we soon realised that deciding to host the event had been the easy part. With an abundance of talent, flair for creativity and real passion for great food on show, picking one restaurant for each award
was no simple task. Eastside has spent the past year reviewing the very best places to eat in Bawtry, Doncaster, Rotherham and Tickhill. As well as a panel of independent judges, we also called on readers of Eastside to pass judgement on the region’s culinary highflyers. After much deliberation, our winners were chosen. There were ten awards in total, praising both newcomers to the restaurant world and its well-established favourites. Compered excellently by Andy Roberts, the awards were presented to the winners by Eastside’s publishing manager Terri Moore and sales executive Rebecca Hume. Both ladies looking resplendent in floor-length gowns from designer ladieswear boutique Chique. The White Swan at Blyth became the stand-out success story of the evening. Closing

The winners
the restaurant for one night only, owners Richard Howden and Claire Wheeler came with all chefs and waiting staff – and even some regular customers – in tow. The bold move was not to be in vain as they not only won the title of Best Contemporary but also scooped the most coveted award of the night; Restaurant of the Year. Having only been open for two years,The White Swan at Blyth’s impressive menu, quality of dining and cosy atmosphere had clearly created a winning combination. But the night was not just about receiving awards as Peter Bradley of local charity Aurora took centre stage for an exclusive charity auction. After a tense round of bidding for a signed Chelsea FC kit and book, golf memorablia and a review and automatic entry into next year’s Eastside Awards for one restaurant, our generous guests had raised almost £1,500 for the worthy cause. Our heartfelt thanks and huge appreciation go to The Crown Hotel in Bawtry. Not only did they dress the room in the most spectacular fashion, but the food they served was to die for; the incredible six-course menu testament to the high standards met by all of our winners and nominees. It’s no mean feat cooking for some of the best chefs and restaurant owners in the region but The Crown pulled it off with some style. Read on to discover who took home those sought-after trophies...
One of our key business partnerships in more recent years has been with the Bawtry Retail Association (BRA). From small beginnings back in 2011 BRA has gone from strength to strength and our quarterly Eastside supplement, Visit Bawtry, has given us the opportunity to chronicle the ever-changing local business and social scene in depth.
Traditional British pubs – somewhere to sip a tasty pint of ale while tucking into hearty, homemade fare – are few and far between these days. But The Ship in Bawtry is one such place. Renowned for its cosy interior (adorned, of course, with ships aplenty), the well-loved pub is ticking all the right boxes for those after good-sized portions of British pub grub.
Best European: Roccos
Bringing authentic Italian cuisine to Tickhill, Roccos relishes everything good about the country’s classic dishes. “We’re very proud and surprised to have won, especially as we were up against Zinis,” said general manager David Fort.“Not many places do real, traditional Italian but our style is rustic rather than contemporary. You won’t find dishes like Bolognese, carbonara or lasagne, which people can cook at home, on our brand new menu.”
After extensively refurbishing The White Swan in 2011, owners Richard Howden and Claire Wheeler have succeeded in creating what is undoubtedly one of the region’s finest eateries. Deserved winners of both Best Contemporary and Restaurant of the Year. “We are absolutely amazed to have won Restaurant of the Year,” said Claire.“It’s great to win one, but to win both has blown our expectations. It’s down to the hard work of all of our staff; not just an individual but the whole team. “Our menus change constantly – every six or eight weeks and they are always seasonal – and everything we do is handmade. Be it a pint and a sandwich or a threecourse meal, we give everyone the same welcome, offering informal dining and a relaxed atmosphere so people can just have a good time. “Next year we want to continue doing what we are doing but continue to improve all the time; we have exciting plans but we can’t reveal them just yet.”
Best Bistro: Bar and Bistro
The newly-refurbished Bar and Bistro combines quirky decor with delicious food – a winning combination as it was crowned Best Bistro this year. It has had a reputation as the ultimate restaurant and party venue since it first threw open its doors to revellers in 1973, and with an excellent menu and an extensive bar, it’s easy to see how the venue satisfies as a high-end dining experience and a Saturday night hotspot.
Best Asian: China Rose
China Rose goes against the grain of many Chinese restaurants with its opulent decor and teeming events calendar. Because of this, and a menu that gives Chinese food a new lease of life, it was named Best Asian. Owner Estelle Johnston said:“We were very pleased with the win as we put a lot of hard work into the food, service and surroundings at China Rose.We have a lot of exciting events next year including a big celebration for the Chinese New Year on 30 January.”

ABOVE: The Shepherd’s Huts at Samlesbury Hall BELOW: Firepit fun
s we rounded the bend on the tree-lined gravel driveway and our accommodation came into view, my children’s faces lit up. “Are we staying there?” they asked. Now, children can be hard to read at times; they are either incredibly hard to please or incredibly easy to please depending on the mood they’re in. Thankfully my two fell into the latter category. I think they were impressed. “We most certainly are,” I replied. “Wow,” they countered. The look on their faces was a picture. Clearly sold from their first look, my wife and I were perhaps a bit more sceptical. What we were looking at was a sort of cross between a gypsy caravan and an old air raid shelter. Would we all fit? Would it be cold? Were the first questions that sprang that to mind. In short, yes and no. The Shepherd’s Hut that would be our ‘home’ for the next two nights was like

nothing we’d seen before. The bluepainted corrugated metal dwelling, perched on four wagon wheels, housed a real oasis of calm and luxury. It was quirky but cosy and comfortable too with everything you could need – double bunk beds with memory foam mattresses, low-wattage electricity to keep your phone charged, free wifi, a kettle and, oh, central heating and an ensuite. When we were offered the opportunity to try glamping, this was probably not what we had in mind. This was much, much better. There was plenty of room for all of us but, blessed with good weather during our stay, we took full advantage of the outside area in front of our hut, which had a picnic bench, fire pit and barbecue (available on request). There was plenty of grassed space for my kids to kick a ball around without encroaching on anyone else too. Our Shepherd’s Hut was one of 28
which forms The Hamlet at Samlesbury Hall, a half-timbered black and white medieval house in Lancashire that dates back to 1325.
TRAVEL
CLOCKWISE FROM BELOW: The comfortable, luxury interiors in the Shepherd’s Huts; Suitably attired for the ‘Bee Experience’
Just six miles from Preston, the hall was built by Gilbert de Southworth and was the home of his family until the early 17th century. It has since been many things, including a public house and a girls’ boarding school, but is now open to the public, attracting 50,000 visitors a year, and is a popular wedding venue. The huts have been a recent addition but have quickly proved to be popular – their quirkiness is obviously a huge selling point. The Hamlet is a short walk from the hall and offers all the peace and quiet you could want. If you want to explore there’s an adventure trail, kid’s playground and neighbouring golf centre with a driving range and crazy golf. Samlesbury Hall is also home to the Bee and Heritage Centre, which is run by Simon and Kath Cordingley. As part of our visit we enrolled in one of their ‘Bee Experiences’, which saw us all donning specialist suits and visiting one of their many hives. The centre provides visitors with the opportunity to explore the working lives of honeybees and their importance to our environment and economy. Simon and Kath currently maintain some 150 colonies of honeybees at 15 locations across the North West and North Wales. They run an ethical bee-keeping programme that sees the production of honey as a by-product of their biodiversity work. They then work with carefully-chosen, local producers to extend the value of their honeys into bespoke, premium products such as gin, chocolate and beer. The hour that we spent with the couple was frankly fascinating. We looked into the workings of the hives, about workers and drones, and found out how the Queen bee is all powerful. And
yes, we did get to try some of their wonderful honey too. If you’re worried about what to eat during your stay, don’t be. On our first night there we took full advantage of the weather, requesting a barbecue and cooking some sausages as well as toasting some marshmallows over the fire pit. The hall also has a restaurant, open for breakfast and lunch up to 3pm, and don’t miss a trip to Dottie’s Wafflery, which will satisfy all your sweet tooth cravings – think milkshakes, ice cream, Knickerbocker Glories and, of course, waffles and pancakes. If you fancy heading out, there’s plenty of decent pubs and restaurants within a five-minute drive. We enjoyed a lovely cooked breakfast in the restaurant on both mornings perched in front of the roaring open fire and also sampled lunch. You can prebook afternoon tea, which looked to be hugely popular, but we opted for the a la carte menu; slow cooked shin of beef and a grilled Cajun chicken sandwich were both excellent. After lunch we had a wander round Samlesbury Hall
the hall, which is free to visit, and discovered its history with witches, ghosts and Robert the Bruce all laying some claim to Samlesbury. Meanwhile, the sun-drenched courtyard was the perfect spot to enjoy one of Dottie’s ice creams while my children played ‘hook a duck’ in the fountain. If you can’t quite let go of those luxuries you’ve become accustomed to, a stay in one of Samlesbury’s Shepherd’s Huts is the perfect compromise. You get peace and quiet, a historic hall to explore and accommodation that’s far from your run-of-the-mill hotel room. The kids will love it too. Mine certainly did.
Details: The Shepherd’s Huts at Samlesbury Hall sleep up to four people and are available all year round, priced from £25 per person, per night. Contact helena@salmesburyhall.co.uk or call 01254 812010 to book your stay. The Bee Experience is priced £40 per person and the centre is open on Wednesdays and Sundays. Find out more by visiting www.thebeecentre.org or follow them on social media @thebeecentre. Getting there: Samlesbury Hall is about a 1hr 45 minute drive from Sheffield. Blackpool and Southport are about 40 minutes if you fancy heading to coast, or you can head north to the Lake District, which takes about an hour. Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk 33

Good luck to the two Andy’s, Claire and Kai. Also congratulations to Andy and Claire who celebrated their engagement at the White Hart. Lisa Lawson celebrates 20 years
Classical Showtime
A prestigious and award-winning health and beauty salon in Bawtry is celebrating a milestone anniversary – 20 years of ownership by leading beauty therapist Lisa Lawson. House of Lindsey first opened its doors over 44 years ago by Doreen Bramley when it was one of only six DECLEOR accredited salons in the UK, an iconic brand which the salon is delighted to still have today. As a newly qualified beauty therapist, Lisa left for Greece with the aspiration of working on cruise ships however, she missed home too much and soon returned to the UK and joined the House of Lindsey team. The Greatest Stay Some of the world’s top dancers spent a fortnight at The Crown Hotel, Bawtry recently. The cast and crew were part of the line-up for the new Hugh Jackman Show – called The Man. The Music. The show sees Hugh Jackman perform hit songs from The Greatest Showman, Les Misérables and other Broadway shows and films, accompanied by a live orchestra. Rehearsing locally at a secret location for two weeks, the crew enjoyed all the amenities of Bawtry which are just on the doorstep of the hotel. Katey Dent, sales manager, commented: “The crew were all so lovely and our staff got to know them all – such a friendly bunch! The production company have used our hotel before and knew that we could look after the group well and offer them a home from home stay as they are away from home for such a long time.” She added: “Many of the dancers have worked on Broadway and the West End and are at the top of their game. We will miss them as they brought a great new vibe to Bawtry and the hotel. It would be great to see them back in Bawtry again in the future.”

The majestic venue makes for a house party like no other, so whether you’re planning a birthday, wedding, anniversary or graduation party, be the envy of your friends and family by hosting your party at Bawtry Hall. The beautiful Bawtry venue has become the destination for any and every big event in the area, from black tie balls and photoshoots to fashion shows and stunning weddings, Bawtry Hall can be transformed for a party of any size, style or theme. You’ll likely have seen or heard of some of the parties held at Bawtry Hall of late, including the second Bring Your Breastie Ball for Firefly and Cancer Research, The Diamond Ball for DB4C, The No Idea Ball for MIND. This June the Hall is set to play host to a Lavish Ladies Lunch with Real Housewives of Cheshire star Dawn Ward in association with Exclusive Party. It was husband and wife Sarah and Darren who most recently took to Bawtry Hall to host a celebration, with the couple both reaching milestone birthdays. “My husband and I were celebrating our two big birthdays, reaching 40 and 50, and wanted to do something special to celebrate. We initially found Rachel Beer from Exclusive Party on the internet, as we were originally planning
Y
on having the party at home,” says Sarah. As the guest list grew, Sarah and Darren decided to look around a few venues, and as soon as they saw Bawtry Hall, they fell in love. “It was a real party house,” says Sarah. “Rachel from Exclusive Party was also the event planner for Bawtry Hall, so it all worked out nicely when organising the party. “I never had to worry about a thing, Rachel organised everything so smoothly and had excellent attention to detail. She was full of fab ideas like having showgirls, a casino, photo booth and a professional photographer. “Bawtry Hall was a great venue for a birthday celebration, it worked perfectly for our party and the food was amazing!” Nobody ever leaves Bawtry Hall with an empty stomach, the food at the Hall is made to the highest of standards and there’s always something for everyone. Decadent dessert tables made sure that nobody was left longing for afters either, as their stunning dessert table had some considering skipping a starter! The couple couldn’t fault their experience at Bawtry Hall, and they each praised the staff for their attentiveness throughout the party, even bringing out bacon butties at 12am before the night ended and guests made the short walk over to The Crown Hotel to rest their heads (and nurse their hangovers).

David Fowkes heads to Goldsmiths North Award-winning jewellery designer David Fowkes, is the only Nottinghamshirebased designer whose work will be highlighted at a new northern contemporary jewellery and silversmithing show, Goldsmiths North, to be held from 12-14 July at Cutlers’ Hall in Sheffield. Thoresby Park-based David is pictured (on the right) with Goldsmith North Director, Brett Payne, at the show’s recent launch. David’s work reflects two of the main trends in jewellery at the moment, coloured stones and customisation, with around 90 per cent of his designs made to order for high earning individuals based around the world. Fans include Craig Revel Horwood who wore pieces from David’s menswear range for the last series of the BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing. Goldsmiths North will build on the success of The Goldsmiths Fair in London and the Elements Festival of Jewellery, Silver & Gold in Edinburgh. It will bring the best of designer jewellery and silversmithing from the UK and Europe to the north of England and is expected to attract over 2,000 visitors. David is one of a small selection of designers who will be specially profiled in the show’s Annual guide. Pop into the David Fowkes Gallery in Thoresby Courtyard for your free ticket, normally £5.
Bawtry Hall hosted the Doncaster PA network event. Personal assistants and executive assistants from across Doncaster came to enjoy all aspects of event planning with tours of Bawtry Hall, cocktail flairing, a talk from Rachel at Exclusive Party on party planning and a talk from Jane at Champagne and Flamingos about scent styling!

Bring your Breastie photoshoot at Bawtry Hall
Promoting Doncaster A team from The Crown Hotel and Bawtry Hall recently attended the Conference and Hospitality Show in Leeds with Doncaster Racecourse to promote business tourism in Doncaster.
Just a year ago a group of ladies from Doncaster hit the headlines and went viral on social media for their courage in posing topless, discreetly, to raise awareness of breast cancer. Fast forward 12 months and another spring morning saw 50 local ladies, Capital Radio host Jojo Kelly and pop legend Eric Clapton’s daughter Ruth, proudly pose again, driving home the messages of self care, being breast aware and body confidence and to raise money for Equinox a charity which raises money for Cancer Research UK and Firefly, a Doncaster based charity. CELEBRATING 30 YEARS
Celebrating
A day at the races hat better way to celebrate 30 years of Eastside than by taking some of our oldest friends from the local business community for a day at the races? Eastside and Doncaster Racecourse have been synonymous since 1989 and we relished the opportunity to wine and dine our regular clients, including some who have been advertising in the premier quality lifestyle magazine for Doncaster, Rotherham and North Notts since our very first issue. Joining us in our private box were guests from local businesses including Incognito, H L Brown, The World of Beds, Fenwood Estates, The Old Butchers, Sunnybank Gardens, Tickled Pink, Ultimate Bathrooms, The Crown Hotel, Houseproud and Ye Olde Bell. Representing RMC Media were managing editor John Murphy, Eastside publishing manager Terri Holt and sister magazine Northside’s publishing director Amanda Roy.

Transform your life LET G&M HEALTHCARE WITH ALEVERE TRANSFORM YOUR LIFE AND YOUR BODY. dread to think where I would be now if I had not started the Alevere programme when I did. I was deteriorating fast as a person.” James Jayawardena’s weight loss difficulties started in April 2016 when his GP diagnosed him with high blood pressure, high cholesterol and prediabetes. “Something had to give as my weight had really started to creep up over the last few years, and, at 22-and-a-half stone, I was starting to become increasingly aware that if I did not do anything about it I was exposing myself to potentially irreversible and serious health implications.” James was worried that his demanding lifestyle would mean it was impossible for him to lose weight, however, as soon as he started on the Alevere programme he was convinced that the team at G&M Healthcare could help him. “My initial concerns were about being hungry, as I ate quite large portions and would often graze during the day. I worked out that I was eating 600/700 calories between meals and I was really worried; I didn’t need to be. “I was apprehensive going into the programme, but once you’re in, the staff walk you through everything, and you feel at ease straight away.” Alevere quickly taught James that losing weight is about understanding food and the effects of various ingredients in food – ensuring you don’t deprive yourself but you take a regular, balanced approach. “I began Alevere with an open mind and the thing that I found most refreshing was that the programme was not about dieting but about making permanent adjustments to my lifestyle. “I started losing weight very quickly, it was like an overnight transformation. My clothes started to feel too big and

people started to notice too, you don’t get any more motivational than that. “Losing weight does not mean giving up everything you enjoy eating. In fact, the pleasure of eating something ‘unhealthy’ is better when it becomes an occasional treat, rather than a regular and ignored part of your diet.” After three months on the programme James had lost almost seven stone, and was starting to feel much more confident again, and has since continued his weight-loss journey. “I was losing 3kg every week, so it was great to get on the scales and realise how much I had lost overall – and that made me want to carry on. I liked the routine of the programme and the big weekly weight loss was a great motivation, I became very focused. “With good planning and listening the programme is adaptable, I wouldn’t say it was easy, it took willpower, but I didn’t feel hungry and my energy levels were noticeably higher to myself and others. “Alevere isn’t a diet, because it changes your philosophy completely. It teaches you to eat normal but healthy food, and retrains you on how you should eat. “The programme is now part of my daily life without me being obsessed with it and by what I can and can’t be eating. I have changed how I eat for good – I eat regularly and I still have
what I want, but I don’t snack all the time.” James has discovered a whole new way of life, and, though he knows there is no magic wand to losing weight, he has seen that with help and support it is achievable. “Alevere has totally changed my life. People always comment that I am now a completely different person and approach things in a different way. “Grace, Sarah and all the staff, therapists and nutritionists are extremely knowledgeable and there’s always as line of communication and support available and you feel like part of a little community. “I firmly believe in Alevere and want others to see how it has worked for me. If I had one regret it would be that I did not start the programme sooner.”

TOAD
Toad: now and then “ W
ho or what is the Toad?” That was the question on many people’s lips within a few months of Eastside launching in the summer of ’89. Strict anonymity was the order of the day of course, as our diarist infiltrated the social scene and returned with the choicest gossip and photographs of Doncaster and Bawtry folk at work and play. Times have changed of course, but Toad is still at the heart of Eastside and this month we’re showing what went on at a couple of choice social gatherings – the Chique fashion show and the Mayflower Ball. Meanwhile this looked like a perfect opportunity to have a look through the archives and revisit some of Gnome’s greatest hits from the last 30 years. You may sport a few familiar faces...

Chique fashion show Chique’s fashion show event at Rossington Hall was another great success with over 180 tickets sold. Chique showcased their latest collections with regular fashion shows throughout the day whilst all their stock was also available to buy on the day.
Gnome Flashback 1 – November 1989 Gnome gatecrashed Simon Longworth’s 21st birthday shindig at Le Bistro, which was judged to be a huge success “despite being invaded by a bunch of Hooray Henrys from Cambridge.”

Mayflower Ball The Crown Hotel in Bawtry hosted the Mayflower Ball to raise funds for the Mayflower Animal Sanctuary in Bawtry. With a three-course meal, auction and disco with all monies raised for this excellent cause, a great time was had by all.
Gnome Flashback 2 – December 1989 Eastside’s first Christmas saw an outpouring of generosity as the region’s movers and shakers including some very much still on the scene today including Berni and Jacki from Incognito (below), Andy Longworth (sporting a fab mullet hairstyle) and Denis Mullali, shared the love by sending their festive messages to Toad.
Gnome Flashback 3 – October 2014 Toad has sneaked into the winner’s enclosure at the St Leger Festival more than once over the last three decades but in 2014 our social butterfly was the proud owner of a VIP pass with access all areas as pre-races drinks were sipped at the launch of a new Eastside & Grand St Leger Champagne Lawn.

EATING OUT
Cream of the crop MARTIN EDWARDS REMINISCES OVER A WELL-LOVED FAMILY FAVOURITE. well remember my first encounter with ice cream. It was in Ingoldmells, on the beach in 1963, and I’d have been a toddler. Even so, my playmate was younger still. Two ice cream cones duly arrived, and the other lad tucked into his with all the gusto of youth. Trouble was, he was a little bit inexperienced in the art of tidy eating. A few minutes later he appeared looking rather like a client in a Turkish barbers, face covered in shaving cream ready for the razor. The adults looking on found this hilarious, and so I decided it must be de rigeur. Cue much smearing of ice cream until the faces matched. We each received a cold water wash with a flannel for our pains. Ice cream has come a long way since then, and it appeals to grown-ups as well. Gone are the days when the choice of flavours amounted to vanilla or strawberry. Indeed some makers of ice cream are constantly creating new and sometimes bizarre taste combinations likely to appeal to adults as well as children. Would you believe lager and lime ice cream? If you fancy a swift pint of this recently discovered variety, you don’t have far to go, because we are fortunate in having the creator of the brew on our very doorstep in the shape of the Yorkshire Ice Cream Farm, part of the
I
Sunnybank Gardens complex at Hatfield. It’s there that Amy Robson has worked for 13 years perfecting her craft. Along the way, she’s helped swell the ice cream menu to the present day total of some 70 varieties. When Eastside visited, the day was appropriately hot and sunny, so conditions were ideal for sampling. Well, someone’s got to do it. Guided by Amy’s experienced hand, we worked our way through her personal favourite cherry cheesecake ice cream, a truly extraordinary sorbet and the likes of the lager and lime creation, which may sound a bit mad, but is actually pretty good. But the one that really appealed to me was the mint flavour, sampled just as it emerged from the churning machine. It would have been sacrilege to repeat my Ingoldmells feat with stuff of this quality, so I took my time and savoured it. But Sunnybank is not just about ice cream. It’s little surprise it has won awards for its family appeal, because it features everything from an adventure playground to slides and bouncy castles and even a dogs’ diner for the family Fido. There’s a crazy golf, a bar and a pleasant restaurant area where mum, dad and kids can choose from a basic but excellent choice of dishes. My posh fish finger butty was far better than its modest description on the menu would have you suppose. The goujons of fish
were fresh and tasty and someone had clearly taken the trouble to ensure the accompanying salad was almost a dish in itself. The one thing that strikes the firsttime visitor is that Sunnybank seems to be a magnet for all ages. There is something to keep small children absorbed, and at the other end of the scale is 93-year-old Bob Nixon, who stops by for morning tea. The giveaway was the regimental badge on his blazer which boldly proclaimed ‘Who Dares Wins’, the motto of the SAS. It turns out he is a veteran of the 1941 raids behind enemy lines in the Egyptian desert, and doesn’t mind other visitors asking about some of the heroic feats he and the rest of his small band performed. All in all, an excellent way to spend a summer day. Sunnybank Gardens & The Yorkshire Ice Cream Farm Bawtry Road, Hatfield Doncaster, DN7 6PH Tel: 01302 842954

EATING OUT
Next stop, Blaxton CHRIS WILSON CHECKS IN AT THE STATION RESTAURANT & BAR. t’s clear that a lot of hard graft has gone in to transforming The Station at Blaxton from a scruffy old pub into a contemporary restaurant and bar. And the almost-finished result, a contemporary multi-purpose venue that works equally well on many levels whether you are dining, meeting friends for a drink or watching football on the big screen, really works. I say almost-finished because while phase one is complete and looks immaculate, more changes are on their way very soon with the launch of a summer menu, the opening of the outdoor gin hut and also the children’s area. Meanwhile ambitious plans to create a hotel with 11 rooms should be completed in about six months’ time. But the first thing that struck me about The Station was the sheer friendliness of everyone working in the restaurant and behind the bar. Add a menu of pub classics and more adventurous dishes, and pizzas baked in a ‘proper’ pizza oven and you really do have a recipe that deserves to succeed. We sat down to eat on a busy Wednesday evening. It’s pizza and prosecco night with great deals to be had but we were determined to give the
I
menu a more rigorous work-out. For me that meant an intriguing starter from the specials board; scallops with pork belly and a whisky-cured apple sauce (£8.95). Now that’s not a dish you find every day but the beautifully cooked scallops, slightly caramelised and juicy, turned out to be an ideal match for the crispy, chewy pork while the whisky and apple combination turned out to be spot on. Who knew? My friend Glyn’s French onion soup, complete with jumbo crouton to soak up the rich broth, was more conventional and just as tasty. For mains I was lured by the promise of pizza made in a ‘proper’ pizza oven. I chose the Station Meat Feast (£12.95) with extra chilli flakes. Would the Italians turn their noses up at the idea of chicken on a pizza? Frankly, who cares. They certainly could not fail to be impressed by the pizza base which was thin, crisp, slightly chewy and charred in the right places. This indulgent combination of pepperoni, salami, slow roasted ham and, yes chicken, on a tomato and mozzarella base was irresistible. Across the table Glyn’s main course of pork belly (£13.85) complete with
crispy crackling, duchess potatoes, broccoli and cider and smoked bacon gravy was another winner. There’s a very reasonable wine list including a good selection by the glass. A large glass of Cabernet Sauvignon (£5.40) for me and a couple of small glasses of Malbec (£4.75) proved to be great accompaniments. They have a strong selection of ales and lagers too. Too many food venues run out of steam when it comes to dessert but the sweet taste at the end of this meal maintained the high standards. White chocolate panna cotta with homemade honeycomb and red berries (£4.20) and chocolate fondant with cherry sorbet and crispy tuille (£5.25) lingered long in the memory. Eastside readers… get involved Just like last year we want you to join us in making sure our final verdict is a true reflection of what paying customers across the region really think. Eastside’s team of reviewers will be out and about over the next six months, checking out established and new restaurants, and searching for the best the region has to offer. We will bring our own opinions to bear of course, but we also know Eastside readers are a discerning bunch
who travel the region to experience the best restaurants, bistros and gastro pubs. That’s why we now give our readers a bigger say. After we have done the rounds of the region’s finest eateries we’ll be publishing our shortlist of the best restaurants in all categories, from best pub to best contemporary. Once the shortlists are revealed, we’ll be asking our readers to have their say on the best in each category. We’ll add up the reader votes, put them with our judges’ own views and come up with the best of the best. Sounds a bit like how the voting works on Strictly Come Dancing, doesn’t it? OK, this is Eastside’s version…Strictly Come Dining! That comes later in the year… we’ll be publishing our shortlists in the September issue of Eastside. ***
Eastside Readers’ Choice Award 2019 You can get involved now by casting your vote for the Eastside Readers’ Choice. Whether you select your favourite local cafe, a much-loved Indian or Italian restaurant or any other type of food venue, all votes are equal. Last year’s winner was Fish Bits, the Doncaster-based family restaurant and grill. Everyone who casts a vote will be entered into a draw, and one lucky winner will receive dinner for two at their favourite restaurant. Voting is free: simply go online to www.rmcmedia.co.uk/events to let us know where you have enjoyed eating out most over the last 12 months. All entries must include a home address and contact details, any multiple entries from the same email address will be disqualified. Closing date: Friday 30 August.
Sponsorship packages: Find out about our sponsorship packages available to impartial businesses (i.e not restaurants) to sponsor one of the awards and marketing opportunities. Email Terri Moore terri.moore@rmcmedia.co.uk for further details.

Join our Judging Panel We also want to give Eastside readers a voice on the independent judging panel that decides the ultimate prize – the Eastside Restaurant of the Year. The search is on to find one reader to join with our other judges, all chosen for their knowledge of food and their passion for dining out on the Eastside scene, to eat together at the three venues that are shortlisted for the Eastside Restaurant of the Year. You can leave your credit cards at home; all we want is your opinions. And you will need to clear your diary for a few dates later this year when we bring the judges together to dine out and make their choices. Does this opportunity tickle your taste buds? To apply for a place on our judging panel, please email the managing editor, Chris Wilson, at chris.wilson@rmcmedia. co.uk and tell him in no more than 150 words what qualities you think the judges should be looking out for in the search for Eastside’s Restaurant of the Year. Closing date: Friday 30 August

Bright start ONLY OPEN A FEW WEEKS, THE SUN INN RETFORD HAS ALREADY MADE A POSITIVE IMPRESSION ON THE LOCAL DINING SCENE, WRITES RICHARD ABBEY. he sun was appropriately shining as we pulled into the car park of the newly-opened Sun Inn in Retford. And what a setting. The first thing that draws your attention is the huge beer garden complete with a very cool looking Airstream garden bar, tuk tuk, firepit and children’s play area. There’s enough seating to house a small army. The inside is just as impressive. The ‘bar and kitchen’, operated by the team behind the Sun Inn in Everton, has two distinct dining areas as well as a large bar area. It’s very cosy; there’s lots of light from full-length windows which accentuates the wooden tables, leather seating, rich velvets and quirky little touches like the retro Coca-Cola fridge in the bar area. Shabby chic, vintage cool… call it what you want, it looks great. For an extra bit of theatre the kitchen is fronted by huge glass doors to give it an open feel. Despite only being open a matter of weeks, word is already getting out and the Sun Inn was already reasonably busy when we arrived on a midweek night. Comfortably seated, we perused the menu, starting with a thirst-quencher; as the designated driver a tried a Bavaria
T
non-alcoholic beer (£2.30) – definitely one of the better ones on the market – while my wife tried the recommended Whitley Neill raspberry gin (£3.70) with light tonic (£1.60). Food-wise we were pretty spoilt for choice. There’s a good selection of starters, mains, burgers, steaks and over a dozen pizza choices. In the end it was the Bang Bang Cauliflower (£4.95) that caught my eye. I don’t know if you can describe cauliflower as ‘meaty’ but it had that kind of quality; crunchy, chewy and very moreish. The sriracha mayo gave it a good kick too. The other half went down a more traditional route with a very good prawn cocktail (£6.95) followed by a 10oz sirloin steak (£21.95), which was served with a garlic roast field mushroom, cherry tomatoes and proper chips. It was a feast for the eyes and delivered on flavour too. For mains I couldn’t resist their Holy Smoke burger (£12.95), a mountain of a 6oz beef patty, smoked brisket and smoked applewood cheese, all wedged into a brioche bun. It was messy but hugely satisfying with the burger itself cooked perfectly. Perhaps overindulgently we also shared a burnt ends mac ‘n’ cheese (£4.95).
If you think you’re spoilt with the menu, wait until you see the selection of sauces. Procured from a Nottingham company called the Sauce Shop, you could choose from more traditional ketchup and mayo to Amarillo chilli and Korean BBQ sauces, all great for dipping those proper chips into. A carefully curated dessert menu delivered a very good sticky toffee pudding (£6.50) whilst a raspberry crème brulee (£6.50) was as it should be, crunchy on top and deliciously smooth underneath. The homemade shortbread biscuit and raspberry sorbet added an extra touch. It might be early days for the Sun Inn Retford but I already sense a bright future. The MG ZS comes with plenty of added extras, including cruise control, Apple CarPlayTM and USB connection for smart phones.
Big personality RHIANA HUGHES GETS BEHIND THE WHEEL OF THE MG ZS. or as long as I can remember, I’ve liked the look of larger cars. Not to be ignored, commanding the road and commanding attention, some may think them obnoxious. Maybe it’s because I’ve spent my life standing at just 5’2” that I’m so attracted to the idea of finally feeling a little bit further off the ground, or maybe it’s the stubborn side of me wanting to prove that I’m not “too small for a big car”, as I’ve so often been told is the case. Whatever the reason, I jumped at the chance to head over to Eric Stead to give one of their most popular MG models a spin. Pulling into the showroom, I couldn’t wait to jump out of my car and up into the MG ZS, but before I did so I couldn’t help but notice that the showroom itself seems to have had a bit of an upgrade. Recently refurbished, the Eric Stead showroom looked shiny and new, with sharp modern lines and new company branding mirroring the sleek, bold designs of the cars sitting inside. The team at Eric Stead know their stuff when it comes to MG. All of the staff at this family-run business have a great depth of knowledge about the models on offer. You’ll even find a couple of gorgeous vintage MGs when

you visit their showroom. Sales advisor Dennis Berry handed over the keys after familiarising me with the new features inside. I’d been given the Exclusive MG ZS in metallic Black Pearl, which comes with all the same features as the Explore and Excite models in the range, plus some added extras including cruise control, Apple CarPlayTM and USB connection for smart phones. As soon as I’d got the hang of the sat nav, in went a Peak District postcode, and off I went. It can take a while to get the hang of a new car, but before I knew it I was confidently weaving between parked cars and effortlessly climbing through the gears. Despite the car’s larger road presence, it was surprisingly nimble, and by the time I reached a national speed limit sign any sense of nervousness was
gone as I put my foot down and allowed myself to enjoy the smooth drive. I couldn’t return the car to the showroom without giving its reverse camera a try, so on my way back from the Peaks I pulled into my local supermarket to try it out and pick up tea at the same time, two birds, one stone, right? Though used to sensors on my own car, the reverse camera took bay parking to a new level. Despite still sheepishly checking over my shoulder, the camera gave me the added confidence that even with the sensors beeping, I was going to leave the car park dent-free. Upon my return to the showroom, I was reluctant to hand the keys back to Dennis, and with 0% finance options and a seven-year warranty available, I was more than tempted to keep the car for myself.
