EASTSIDE GUIDE 2022
FESTIVALS
Be part of the crowd
With Sam Fender, Kasabian and Madness headlining, Tramlines is set to make your summer sizzle. We preview the Sheffield event, which takes place between 22-24 July. estival season returns in earnest this year. After two years of Covid-affected events, 2022 should see a big return to normality – as much as it can – which is great news for music fans. Glastonbury’s back, Leeds and Reading will be going ahead again but while the ‘big’ festivals may grab the headlines, you’ll struggle to find a better value-formoney line-up than at Tramlines. Sam, Fender, Kasabian and Madness take the top slots on Friday, Saturday and Sunday respectively and will be joined by the likes of James, The Vaccines, Sigrid, Self Esteem, The Wombats and Becky Hill. And there’s more. Sheffield’s biggest citybased music festival recently announced its latest additions to the line-up – and it looks like festivalgoers are in for a treat. Joining the headliners at the already sold-out event in Hillsborough Park will be Bad Boy Chiller Crew, Lady Leshurr, Alfie Templeman and Kelis. They’ll be joined by Crawlers, Bleach Lab, Baby Queen,The Clockworks and Elvana. Comedy will also be making a return to the festival, which takes place between 22-24 July, with a huge lineup including headliners Jason Manford, Russell Kane and Seann Walsh. Timm Cleasby, Tramlines operations director, said:

“After the amazing spirit that everyone brought to Tramlines 2021 and how the team delivered an amazing festival in challenging times, we’re all back working hard to make 2022 better than ever. I honestly can’t wait to be back in the park and having a blast with Sheffield again. “There are so many great bands on the 2022 lineup. Those I’m really looking forward to catching are Sigrid, Kasabian, The Coral, Orla Gartland and James, and there’s some great Sheffield artists that I’ve been looking forward to seeing for a while too, the amazing Self Esteem, the return of Little Man Tate and our friends, Reverend and The Makers to name a few. Then to finish off the party, Madness will be sending everyone dancing back to their house…Tramlines 2022 is gonna go off.” Headlining ‘Sarah Nulty’s Main Stage’ on Friday night

is Sam Fender with two Number 1 albums now under his belt. The newly formed but better than ever Kasabian take the lead on Saturday night, while Madness finally get to deliver a long-awaited set following the postponement of Tramlines in 2020 where they were originally due to headline. Other lineup highlights include James who will be bringing the most festivalready tracks from their 39year long career; the frenetic five piece The Vaccines who’ll be
dropping classics such as ‘Norgaard’ and ‘If You Wanna’; Americana/altrocker Jade Bird; the Norwegian pop sensation Sigrid; and the Mercury Prize-nominated Sports Team who make a triumphant return to Hillsborough Park following their appearance in 2019 - anyone recall Alex Rice’s crowd surfing in the Leadmill tent? Ever with its finger on the pulse of breaking talent, the Tramlines 2022 lineup shines a light on some of the most exciting new acts around. These include the gritty indie-folk artist Orla Gartland who dropped her debut
album ‘Women on the Internet’ this August; the melodic, indie-pop rising star Pixey who has just released her second EP on the influential Chess Club label; the guardian tipped ‘one to watch’ outfit Coach Party; and guitarist-singer Sam Ryder who shot to fame with his cover versions during the pandemic resulting in TikTok crowning his the most popular UK artist account of 2020. A Tramlines lineup wouldn’t be complete without a solid injection of Sheffield’s finest. For 2022, crowds can expect homegrown sets from Jon McClure’s
Reverend and The Makers; Self Esteem (aka Rebecca Taylor formerly of Slow Club); Little Man Tate in their highly anticipated return since their farewell in 2009; and arguably one of most attended performances of the entire Tramlines weekend, The Everly Pregnant Brothers who’ll bring the power house of parody, charm and sing-a-long vibes. Plenty of up and coming local acts have also been revealed including Bedroom High Club, Luxury Goods, Sheafs and August Charles. Bedroom High Club are a four-piece new age indie band who have become firm Tramlines favourites since debuting in 2019. Luxury Goods are the Continued on page 14

up of performers including everyone from internationally-acclaimed acts to grass roots talent. 2022’s event - the 13th edition of Sheffield’s biggest party - takes place following an exceptional event in 2021, where the festival took place as part of the Government’s Event Research Programme. It was the largest festival in Western Europe to go ahead since lockdown restrictions were eased and marked a national celebration of the return to live music. Comedy has become a mainstay of the festival and in 2022 Tramlines has secured some huge names kicking off with Seann Walsh who headlines on Friday. You had me at Kelis and Elvana… the return of Lady Leshurr too, just mega. Add to that Jason Manford, Seann Walsh and Lily Philips and I’m gonna need more hours in my weekend.”

PROMOTION
Outdoor appeal THE SALUTATION’S REPUTATION AS ‘BEST PUB IN DONCASTER’ HAS INCREASED FURTHER AFTER THE OPENING OF A BRAND NEW ALFRESCO AREA. he Salutation couldn’t have picked a better time to launch their new, bigger and better beer garden. After unveiling it for the first time on Good Friday, they were blessed with a sun-drenched Easter weekend in which guests could get acquainted with the stunning space. First impressions are that it’s much larger than the old outdoor area – and it is. The Salutation purchased an old unused car park behind the pub and have been able extend creating an area big enough for 160 people (seated). Half of the garden is covered; this area houses a brand new fully-stocked outdoor bar as well as a stage and projector for those big sporting events. The bar will also soon have its own pizza oven so drinkers can grab a slice of the action – in more ways than one. The uncovered space features a plethora of tables, with the larger ones have in-built firepits for those nights when the weather turns a bit cooler. The beer garden is fully heated and The Salutation will be providing blankets, if required, to make sure everyone is comfortable. String lights create an intimate atmosphere and you’ll also find the original ‘Salutation’ pub sign which has been re-purposed as a backdrop to the area. The Salutation, which is a grade II listed building, has been a mainstay on the Doncaster night time scene but has been elevated to a true entertainment pub since the Wilsdon family took over in 2016. Husband and wife Graham and Ton, along with son and daughter Josh and Jennifer, have made many changes – the latest of which is the beer garden – to elevate the appeal of the South Parade venue. “It was what you might call an old

man’s drinking pub,” said Josh of The Salutation when they took over. “We felt it needed, and was deserving of, some energy and TLC. We wanted to offer a city feel in a town pub and show the people of Doncaster that they don’t need to go to Leeds or Sheffield to have a good night.” During this drive to put the pub on the map, Josh came up the hashtag ‘bestpubindoncaster’, something that has stuck and nor adorns the living wall of the new beer garden. “I got it from a Bruno Mars song, and it was very tongue in cheek,” explains Josh. “We put it on our social media with the intention of getting people talking about The Sal and as a way of motivating our team. It seems to have worked on both fronts.” As well as the pub, The Salutation also houses an authentic Thai restaurant on the first floor, a nod to his mum’s heritage and her passion for her country’s cuisine. “We started off serving food just one night a week and only offered a red or green Thai curry,” said Josh. “The restaurant developed from there really. Thai food is about community, being together and sharing, the culture of eating is different. It’s something that is

reflected in our menu and has proved really popular.” The authentic menu features everything Tod Mun Pa (Thai fishcakes) and Massaman curries to Pad Thai and fresh salads and it’s been a big hit since it opened. You’ll find the Thai influence on the menu at The Salutation too which is centred more around pub classics. For example, you’ll find a ‘Sal Club Sandwich’ and ‘Sal Burger’. The former is made with chicken satay, bacon and salad and served with a peanut dipping sauce, whilst the burger is a take on one of the restaurant’s most popular dishes, Pad Kra Pow. Minced pork is mixed with Thai basil, chilli and garlic to make a patty which is then topped with a fried
egg and served in a soft bun. You’re sure to find some of these Thai influences on the new pizza menu too. “We’ll be doing your classics but I’d love to do some Thai fusion pizzas too,” commented Josh. “We’ll definitely do a crispy duck and I think the minced pork, Pad Kra Pow, would work really well too.”
Entertainment plays a huge part at The Salutation and is the perfect platform for Josh, who has a stage and screen acting background, to showcase some of Doncaster’s best talent. As well as live music on weekends, there’s a regular quiz night, comedy nights are planned and Josh is hoping to use the new outdoor stage to try different things. “It opens up a world of possibilities for us,” added Josh. “I’d love to do an improv night or something like that. I think the next few months we’ll be looking at different things to see what works.” Exciting times are ahead for The Salutation. With a pub, Thai restaurant and now fantastic beer garden, it’s place for everyone and all occasions. SOCIETY
Having a ball Mayflower Sanctuary recently held their May Ball at the Crown Hotel in Bawtry, raising £4,500. ayflower Sanctuary was born in 2003 by a small number of people that wanted to make a difference. After a lot of hard work and endless fund raising the vision became a reality. Mayflower Sanctuary now goes from strength to strength. Where once an office/caravan and four garages stood, we now have beautiful dog house’s with kitchen’s, puppy block, cattery and a reception area. Our fundraiser’s work tirelessly and without the support and donations of so many people all this would not have been possible. Mayflower rescue abused and abandoned dogs and cats within the UK and further afield, where ever the need is the greatest we are there. Before going to their forever homes all dogs and cats are neutered and vaccinated. Vets bills are one of our highest outgoings, last year this amounted to £85,000, which left left quite a hole in our bank balance. After two years of no fundraising it was crucial that our May Ball at the Crown Hotel in Bawtry was successful, there was some fantastic auction/raffle prizes and everyone was very generous. It was a brilliant evening and total raised was £4,500. Huge thanks to everyone concerned.

DEAR DOCTOR
DR JOHN TITTERINGTON MBChB, FRCA, FFPMRCA IS A CONSULTANT IN INTERVENTIONAL PAIN MANAGEMENT AT LEEDS TEACHING HOSPITALS TRUST AND SPIRE LEEDS HOSPITAL. QUESTION:
I have low back pain, what specialist should I see and what sort of treatment options are available? ANSWER:
For sufferers of back pain, a common, but sometimes inaccurate diagnosis is “non-specific low back pain”. Back pain is traditionally treated with exercises such as Pilates, yoga and tai chi. Exercise can be a great alternative to the limited and sometimes unpleasant range of pain killers. Unfortunately for some exercise and pain killers are not enough, frequently patients look to spinal surgeons to solve their pain. However as spinal surgery is generally not recommended for back pain it is often more productive to see a specialist consultant in pain management, for whom back pain is a very common complaint. These professionals are usually consultant anaesthetists who specialise

PLASMABLAST IS A 100 PER CENT NATURAL, NON-INVASIVE AESTHETIC TREATMENT DESIGNED TO SHRINK THE SKIN. lasmablast skin tightening is a 100 per cent natural skin treatment which gives you a brighter, smoother, contoured and youthful appearance. The treatment shrinks sagging skin, reduces lines and dramatically reduces deep wrinkles or completely takes them away. Plasmablast works on natural healing and you will see results at six weeks plus – don’t forget it has taken years to grow your loose skin so it needs a bit of time to shrink it back. This treatment allows Clare to remove excess skin in a non-surgical, minimally invasive manner. Over the last four years, Clare has refined her approach to treating clients that want to look younger or fresher without the obvious frozen, stretched or plumped faces often seen now in day to day life. All clients who undergo Clare’s signature Plasmablast facelift report that they look and feel refreshed and more importantly they keep their true facial expressions. Clare’s approach focuses on the following key areas:

in the management of spinal pain and other chronic pain (pain lasting for more than three months). Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust has a team of Pain Management consultants based at Leeds General Infirmary. The pain management consultant will discuss your back pain, carefully examine and investigate (MRI scans) and may undertake X-ray guided injections to diagnose precisely the cause of the pain. Following this the most commonly diagnosed specific causes of low back pain can be: • Arthritis of the small joints (facet joints) in the spine • Sacroiliac joint wear and tear (the region above the pelvis and the base of the back) • Disc degeneration with spinal muscle dysfunction • Neuropathic back pain (burning pain and sensitivity) • Slipped discs (herniated discs) • Piriformis syndrome • Cluneal neuritis For some patients, the pain can be truly non-specific. In these cases, the consultant will be best placed to advise on medications and lifestyle changes. But if the specific cause can be carefully identified, it can be effectively treated.Treatments include steroid injections to help shrink back prolapsed discs, joint injections, ablating (burning) nerves which run to the arthritic joints, or even implants to help with pain. There have been huge leaps in recent medical development of what is termed “Implantable” technology such as spinal cord stimulators. These modify nerve activity to minimise the sensation of pain reaching the brain and for some will be the life-changing treatment they have been searching for.

• Facelift • Crepey Skin • Overhanging eyelids • Bags under eyes • Crows feet • Cheek enhancement • Sagging Jawline • Smokers lips • Smoother neck • Skin texture improvement • Lines and wrinkle reduction The treatment works by using a specialised device which delivers a nitrogen based gas which changes in the air just above the skin causing an arc which zaps the skin. This process damages the epidermis many times causing the body’s natural defence technique to go into overdrive, fibroblasts in the dermis kick in and produce brand new collagen, thus encouraging fresh new skin cells and restoring the elastin giving a bouncier texture. To see many before and after pictures look on Facebook –Plasmablast Skin Tightening by Clare Carroll – or Instagram – plasmablastclare. Plasmablast is predominantly for the over 40s who have loose, wrinkly skin but can also minimise acne scarring in younger clients. Plasmablast treatments are priced from £250 up to £900. Clare will give free consultations via FaceTime video chats or at her brand new skin clinic in Selby. It will include skin analysis, assessing the texture of your face and what she can do for you. Call Clare on 07976 971501. Clare can also visit salons in Bingley, Leeds,York and Selby or at your home address, travel expenses will be added.

MOTORING
A famous British company have taken electric vehicles to a new level, writes Richard Abbey.
Bold and exotic The ongoing transformation of Lotus to a truly global performance car brand has reached its most significant milestone yet. The all-new and all-electric Lotus Eletre is a striking and progressive Hyper-SUV – the first of a new breed of pure electric SUVs. It is the first of three new Lotus lifestyle EVs in next four years, with design language inspired by world’s first British EV hypercar, the award-winning Lotus Evija. The four-wheel drive Eletre delivers a significant number of firsts for Lotus – the first five-door production car, the first model outside sports car segments, the first lifestyle EV, the most ‘connected’ Lotus ever. And yet it remains a true Lotus, a beautiful car ‘carved by air’, packed with pioneering technology, genuine sporting performance and simplicity of purpose, designed and developed by a passionate and global team.
All electric With the luxury saloon EQS and the sporty executive saloon EQE, MercedesBenz has entered a new, all- electric era at the top end of the market. The EQS SUV, the third model series with this architecture developed for electric vehicles, will soon follow. The SUV offers plenty of space, comfort and connectivity for up to seven passengers in its avant-garde, luxurious interior. Thanks to powerful electric motors, responsive 4MATIC all-wheel drive and an intelligent OFFROAD driving mode, the EQS SUV is also capable of tackling light terrain with ease. With the EQS SUV, Mercedes-Benz is taking a major step towards zeroemission mobility and is moving a step closer to fulfilling Ambition 2039. The model is produced in a completely CO2neutral way.

Striking styling With the new BMW 7 series, the latest generation of the brand’s flagship saloon, BMW is set to redefine the luxury segment with new levels of electrification, sustainability and digitalisation. Beneath a graceful exterior that fuses striking modern style with the practicality and imposing nature of a premium saloon, the new BMW 7 Series introduces an advanced drivetrain that – for the first time – brings plug-in electrification to every model sold in the UK. Launching later this year with the pure electric i7 xDrive60, the plug-in hybrid 750e xDrive and M760e xDrive are set to follow in spring 2023. The dedicated M Performance model will deliver 571hp, combining the searing performance characteristics of a BMW M model with efficiency-enhancing plug-in hybrid technology. The new fully-electric BMW i7 xDrive60 is priced from £107,400 RRP, with the first UK deliveries expected to commence from December 2022.
High performance Land Rover has introduced a new HST model to the Range Rover Velar family. The HST was first introduced on the high-performance Range Rover Sport and Evoque models and its dynamic character is now available on the Velar for the first time. A distinctive combination of design enhancements and chassis features bring a new dimension of sporting luxury to the line-up, all based around the R-Dynamic design. Its stealthy character is supported by a Black contrast roof and full exterior Black Pack. Available in the full colour palette and exclusively in new Arroios Grey, privacy glass and unique Gloss Black 21-inch 5 split-spoke alloy wheels complete the exterior. The dynamic theme continues inside, with Black Suedecloth headlining and steering wheel. A sliding panoramic roof ensures a light and airy cabin while a combination of chassis technologies ensure the perfect balance of ride comfort and handling. In keeping with its dynamic personality, the HST is available with a choice of powerful six-cylinder Ingenium engines. Customers can choose from the P400 (400PS) and D300 (300PS) Mild Hybrid Electric Vehicle (MHEV) petrol and diesel powertrains for effortless performance and refinement.
