A taste of luxury
new season brings a new start for legacy family jewellers, H L Brown, who have recently undergone a major refurbishment at their Frenchgate Centre showroom in Doncaster.
It’s the shop’s first update since 2004 and the new look mirrors recent work undertaken at H L Brown’s Sheffield city centre store, marrying the company’s striking purple branding with a stylish, calm interior of rose gold, ivory and wood.
“This refurbishment shows our long-term commitment to Doncaster,” enthused shop manager Paul Downend. “We
want to play an important part in the city’s future as retail reshapes itself for the modern world.”
The six-week project, which saw the store closed throughout that time, was designed by Nason Foster and completed by Esprit UK Ltd, who also worked together on the Sheffield upgrade.
Step inside and you’ll find that the shape of the shop has been retained, including the attractive curved ceiling feature. New lighting has been installed throughout and used to striking effect in the updated window displays, and new

furniture has been added to create distinct consultation, display and service areas.
“The new look is recognisably H L Brown but with enough individuality to make it unique to Doncaster,” said managing director James Frampton, who continues the legacy of this family business, founded by his great great grandfather Harris Brown in Sheffield in 1861.
“We are all thrilled by the transformation achieved by the refurbishment, and are receiving very positive response from customers and the public generally.”
One of the major additions is a new private area, set away from the rest of the shop floor, for lengthier and more intimate conversations and staff are on hand to provide refreshments to enhance your visit.
The new look is complemented by new ranges from familiar brands; Longines and Mont Blanc are both exclusive to H L Brown in Doncaster, and you’ll also find watches from Gucci, Tissot and Seiko as well as Lucy Quartermaine silver jewellery, Francis Howard Sheffield-made sterling silver picture frames and Richard Cooper bronze.
H L Brown remains specialists in gemstone jewellery and has further strengthened its collections and also has a growing vintage collection – pre-owned watches are especially popular.
Repairs and valuations are still very much part of its service too and long-standing staff are on hand to answer any questions you may have.
“Shopping with us is very much an experience; the refurbishment enhances the service we provide,” added James. “Customer expectations are rising and we aim to make every visit extra special.”
A warm welcome is assured for you at H L Brown where the friendly traditions of a family business are still very much in evidence.

DIRTY DANCING RETURNS TO LEEDS NEXT MONTH. RICHARD BARBER SPOKE TO PRODUCER KARL SYDOW ABOUT IT’S BREAKING BOX OFFICE RECORDS AND MORE.
n THEATRE n MUSIC n COMEDY n EVENTS n EXHIBITIONS n FILM n FURTHER AFIELD…
14 www.rmcmedia.co.uk
ou can be the most experienced producer in the world but sometimes you have to follow your heart rather than your head.
Ask Karl Sydow, the man responsible, against all sensible advice, for putting Dirty Dancing on stage and watching as it broke box office records all around the world.
The story begins in Sydney, Australia in 2004. “It’s where I bumped into a very drunk rock ‘n’ roll promoter,” he recalls, “keen to stage a theatrical version of Dirty Dancing. He’d gone bankrupt but had somehow held on to the rights of the show.
“So, I phoned my then 18-year-old daughter, Katarina, who’d watched the movie over and over again with her friends. I asked her whether she thought it was a good idea to put the show on stage. And she said yes.”
Nor was she the only female to give the project a thumbs-up. Judi Dench was a friend of long standing. “And I’d never forgotten the fact that she told me Dirty Dancing was her favourite film of all time.”
It’s a kind of fairy tale, says Karl, 69, “a blend of Cinderella going to the ball, falling for a James Dean bad boy and winning his love via dance. Alongside that is the story of an unwanted pregnancy, false accusations of theft and a bitter family rift before all comes right in the end.”
Karl felt quietly confident that he was on to a winner. He was right. With a record-breaking £15million advance in sales and House Full notices for the first six months of the initial London run, Dirty Dancing became the fastest-selling show in West End history and ran for five years.
The show has since toured, the most successful being when it went on the road in Blackpool in August 2021 before finally coming to rest in London this January. “But then Michael O’Reilly and Kira Malou are probably the best Johnny and Baby we’ve ever had,” says Karl.
Now they’re back for a new run opening at Leeds Grand Theatre from 610 June.
Michael O’Reilly went straight from Bird music college in Sidcup into the
lead role of Johnny in the 2018 tour of Dirty Dancing. As it turned out, the 25year-old had never seen the movie. “Part way through my audition, the director said he wanted a very similar tone in one scene to the same bit in the film.
‘You’ve seen Dirty Dancing, I presume?’ he said. ‘Of course,’ I lied. ‘Great, then play it at this point like Patrick Swayze.’
“I watched the DVD that evening at home and of course I hadn’t done the scene anything like Patrick Swayze.” No matter, he got the part. “And it changed my life.” In more ways than one. In his final audition, he was introduced to Kira Malou, chosen to play Baby.
“When you’re in a show like that opposite someone as beautiful as Kira,” says Michael, “the inevitable is going to happen. We fell in love.” They’ve been together ever since.
Kira, 27, had been on the Dirty Dancing tour in 2017 as a dancer although she was understudy to Baby, landing the role full-time when the show toured again the following year.
So how long did it take her to fall for her leading man? “Almost immediately. He was so kind and supportive, always in such high spirits. Four years later, he’s still happy all the time.”
All right but what happens if they have a row over their morning muesli?
“We leave everything at the stage door. If ever there was a show that lifts your mood – whether you’re on stage or in
the audience – it’s Dirty Dancing.”
Finally, as if one fairy tale on stage wasn’t enough, consider the story of Charlotte Coggin, a 28-year-old dancer who auditioned for the run of Dirty Dancing the last time it played at the Dominion in London for ten weeks from the beginning of February 2022. She got down to the final two but the other dancer was chosen.
Not to be outdone, Charlotte got a job working front-of-house in the theatre’s champagne bar. But, when a cast member fell ill towards the end of the run, her agent got a call: would Charlotte like to replace her?
“I was shocked but really pleased. And everyone was so welcoming. At the end of my first performance, all my friends from front-of-house lined the stairs and cheered and clapped when I took my bow. It was so lovely.”
It gets better. When it was announced that Dirty Dancing was to return to the Dominion at the beginning of next January, Charlotte was invited to audition again, both as a dancer but also to understudy the lead role of Baby.
“And I got the job. I know it all sounds like the plot of a movie but it’s true. It happened to me.” No need to ask if she’s pleased. “To coin a phrase,” she says, “I’m having the time of my life!”

IT’S JORDAN ODU’S FAVOURITE TIME OF YEAR...
Hello summer, we’ve been expecting you.
It’s no secret that summer is my favourite time of year and there’s no stopping me now as far as food festivals and outdoor events go. The first sign of sunshine and my shorts are on and the shades are out. Chowdown here we come.
I’ve also discovered the perfect summer drink with the incredibly moreish Rozél vodka. We launched this fruity pink-hued rosé flavoured tipple at a star-studded party on Ishho’s roof terrace and it went down an absolute storm. Inspired by France’s Provence rose wine, Rozél is a bonafide fruit bomb with notes of raspberry, peach and pink grapefruit and is my new go-to party drink. I’m obsessed.
And, thanks to the new House of Creed counter on the ground floor at Harvey Nichols, I’ve finally found my summer 2023 scent too. I was invited along for a consultation at their new plush fragrance bar, which is home
to the iconic brand’s extensive collection.
After much debate, I went for the Millésime Imperial Eau De Parfum, a citrusy number with flashes of bergamot, blackcurrant and violet leaves that effortlessly takes you from day to night. I must have been flammable by the time I’d gone through the collection, but it was well worth it. The golden bottle is a thing of beauty too and looks great on my shelf. Pay them a visit if you’re struggling for gift inspiration, they’ve got something for every occasion.
As the Leeds food scene continues to evolve, I’m counting down
the days to check out the latest project down at The Collective. The unique interior design and cafe-bar concept are now opening after hours serving up premium cocktails and some amazing foodie collabs.
The first pop-up has been created with awardwinning local chef and local lad Craig Rogan from Dakota Leeds, who has designed some amazing dishes for his ten-course tasting menu.
I for one can’t wait to try
Things in Bread - the best sandwich in Leeds
22 www.rmcmedia.co.uk
Drink of Summer 2023 Rozel Vodka
the Glazed Pork Rib with Fennel and Yuzu and the Sweet Cheese with Clementine and Dark Chocolate dessert. There’s also a wine flight available for anyone looking to go all out. Don’t sit on this, places are limited and it’s going to be big.
Now I’m not usually a sandwich guy, but Things in Bread has totally changed that. Sitting pretty on Boar Lane, this gourmet sandwich joint uses its signature shokupan milk loaf created by Doh’Hut to make some darn tasty creations. Their club sandwich with its super fluffy bread, generous filling is an absolute winner and you have to grab a
banging donut for afters.
A few blocks away, central Leeds’ most popular bar just turned one and I headed straight down to celebrate in the sun. Green Room has been smashing it all year with its striking outdoor terrace, good vibes and cool local indie hookups. The new food menu by Clean Kitchen is loaded with temptation and the Moroccan Lamb Kofta Bowl is one to beat. Definitely one to visit this summer if you haven’t done so already. That’s everything from me this month. I’m off to catch some rays in my local. Enjoy the sunshine and I’ll be back next month with everything Yorkshire.

500 acres of art –and more
Yorkshire is home to Europe’s largest sculpture park, which is perfect for a day out this summer.
orkshire Sculpture Park (YSP) is the largest sculpture park of its kind in Europe and across its 46-year history has worked with over 1,000 artists from more than 40 countries.
It’s the only place in Europe to see Barbara Hepworth’s The Family of Man in its entirety, alongside a significant collection of sculpture, including bronzes by Henry Moore, important pieces by Phyllida Barlow, Roger Hiorns, Damien Hirst, Studio Morison, Hemali Bhuta and Ai Weiwei, and site-related works by Katrina Palmer, Andy Goldsworthy, Alfredo Jaar, David Nash, Sean Scully and James Turrell.
The park, which is free to visit and explore, welcomes over 400,000 each year and is situated in the 500-acre, 18th century Bretton Hall estate close to junction 38 of the M1.
Founded in 1977 by Sir Peter Murray CBE and since 2022 led by Clare Lilley, YSP is an independent charitable trust whose work is made possible by investment from Arts Council England,
Wakefield Council, Liz and Terry Bramall Foundation and Sakurako and William Fisher through the Sakana Foundation.
YSP supports artists at vital stages in their careers and is rare in having the accommodation, workshops and expertise to enable open-ended and risk-taking practice, giving artists space, time and support to think and to develop new ideas.
Over its tenure, the park has sought to ignite, nurture and sustain interest in and debate around contemporary art and sculpture, especially with those for whom art participation is not habitual or familiar. It enables open access to art, situations and ideas, and continues to reevaluate and expand the approach to considering art’s role and relevance in society. Supporting 40,000 people each year through YSP’s learning programme, this innovative work develops ability, confidence and life asptiration in participants.
YSP mounts a year-round temporary exhibitions programme including some

Trap of Truth, which opens on 10 June and runs until 28 April 2024, is the first UK museum exhibition by renowned Austrian artist
Erwin Wurm. Showcased in the Underground gallery as well as outdoors, the exhibition features more than 100 works, including 55 sculptures indoors, 19 sculptures in the landscape, paintings, photographs, videos and drawings created over 30 years of the artist’s career.
Erwin is one of Austria’s most prominent artists, highly regarded for his 2017 Austrian Pavilion at the Venice Biennale. Over three decades he has challenged the rules of sculpture, the limitations of the human body, and its relationship to the spaces we inhabit. His work disrupts
perceptions of the familiar and sensible and in a process that abounds with humour and experimentation, he frequently reimagines commonplace objects by giving them human characteristics.
“At some point I came to realise that everything surrounding me can be material for an artistic work, absolutely everything,” Erwin said. “To begin with, because I had no money and worked relatively quickly, I used scraps of wood and cans. Then I used old clothing, which did not cost anything, before ultimately realising that I could actually use anything around me. That was the decisive step, as then anything was possible.”
Introducing us to Wurm’s philosophical contemplation, the exhibition title Trap of the Truth refers to the thinking of influential 17th-century French philosopher Ren. Descartes, who set out to interrogate the subjectivity of truth. This questioning of reality is immortalised in the phrase ‘I think, therefore I am’.
“Erwin Wurm’s sculpture will be a riot of expression and colour against the green Yorkshire landscape and in the galleries,” said Clare Lilley, Director of Yorkshire Sculpture Park “His imaginative powers are limitless, and we hope that visitors will be inspired, energised, confounded, and amused by sculptures that portray familiar objects but in a way that is entirely unexpected.
“Couture handbags grow long legs and arms and have real attitude; a fourmetre-high hot water bottle becomes a big, warm mother; a real truck bends and climbs a gallery wall; a

gigantic gherkin stands proud. Wurm draws attention to the ways in which humans conform to society’s demands, to the psychological impact of contemporary culture, and to how we use history and tradition to scaffold our lives.”
Across in the Weston Gallery, Lindsey Mendick’s solo exhibition, Where The Bodies Are Buried, takes the form of a multi-media installation that investigates dreams, Gothic stories, television and cultural experiences. Bringing the artist’s recurring anxiety dream to life, the exhibition – open until 3 September –takes the form of a decaying house with dark secrets buried beneath the floorboards.
Works will include ceramics and stained glass emerging from the floor as hands, feet and limbs, with a film playing across several screens creating a chorus for simultaneous viewing.
Anxiety dreams have long inspired artists and writers, ranging from Eve’s prophetic dream about eating the forbidden fruit in Paradise Lost, to Surrealist paintings and sculpture depicting hauntings and dream-states. The phrase ‘where the bodies are buried’ means to possess information or secrets about a person or organisation. In Mendick’s installation, the secrets are both literal and metaphorical, the buried bodies signifying her fear of being ‘found out’ and misdeeds of the past being unearthed.
The installation references the popular 1990s UK soap opera Brookside, in which abusive husband and father Terry Jordache was stabbed to death by his wife Mandy in 1993. Mandy buried his body under the patio, assisted by their daughter
Beth who was played by Anna Friel. In a storyline watched and discussed by millions, the body was eventually discovered in 1995 and Mandy and Beth were charged and imprisoned. Mendick reflects on this plotline and the simultaneous, communal television viewing and shared cultural experience of 1990s soaps. Her work mirrors the tensions, crescendo and drama of years-long narratives, in contrast to contemporary on-demand viewing culture. Mendick also draws on Edgar Allan Poe’s 1843 short story The Tell-Tale Heart in which a murderer is plagued by the sound of a heartbeat. He assumes it is that of his victim buried below the floorboards, but the sound is likely the narrator’s own heart betraying him. The story is a powerful reflection on paranoia and guilt, driven by the pounding heartbeat as a rhythmic compulsion to confess.
Mendick creates worlds layered with personal anecdotes, timeless myths and popular culture references. She works predominantly with clay – a material that has historically been associated with decoration and the domestic sphere. She acknowledges and subverts these associations, creating intricate works that explore the roles and experiences of women in society. Dark comedy permeates Mendick’s practice, and her confessional approach knowingly combines crushing self-doubt with sensational honesty. Her installations draw on the artist’s own stories and memories, with humorous, grotesque and beautiful results.

Estabulo Rodizio Bar & Grill
honour the Brazilian Gaúcho’s traditional method of cooking. This involves taking the most delicious and flavoursome cuts of meat, which are then skewered and cooked slowly on open flames.
This method of cooking also means that all the meat is served to you fresh at your table, straight from the grill. You can eat as much or as little as you like, and we have a large selection of meats on offer, so you can stick to what you know or try something a little bit different!

Celebrating the best of Yorkshire
The Coniston Hotel Country Estate & Spa is nestled in the heart of a 1,400-acre estate that boasts stunning views of the Yorkshire Dales. Situated between Skipton and Settle, just off the A65, as well as delicious dining – which we’ll come to shortly – you’ll find beautiful accommodation, a luxury spa, one of the UK’s best shooting grounds, Land Rover Experience and a collection of event spaces that are perfect for all manner of celebrations.
The View Restaurant is one of three dining outlets at the country retreat and truly lives up to its name; surrounded by floor-to-ceiling panoramic windows it offers unbroken views of spectacular Dales countryside as well as the hotel’s very own lake. If the weather allows, there’s also a covered terrace and alfresco dining area. It’s a charming to spot to spend a couple of hours or more.
The View is a 1 AA Rosette restaurant which celebrates the very best of the county, from local produce to local landscapes. As well as MacLeod’s Bar & Lounge and Blossom Kitchen, it now comes under the stewardship of food and beverage manager, Cecil Gordon, who was recently appointed.
Nick Bannister, Owner and Director of The Coniston Hotel Country Estate & Spa commented: “Our dining offering has
grown significantly over the last couple of years. We have an outstanding team of talented chefs, led by head chef Thomas Robertson, who craft our menus to really showcase local produce and our surroundings.
“Cecil is a welcome addition to the team, to enhance our personable friendly service, and become an established host to

welcome our guests. Service is at the heart of everything we have to offer at The Coniston and we look forward to working with Cecil to drive the business forward and become the ‘go to’ choice for local diners in the community.”
The Coniston, and in particular The View Restaurant, has become a popular dining choice for locals as well as hotel guests. We’d ventured from slightly further but were glad we made the effort – our evening was filled with charming service, good food and, of course, those spectacular views over the countryside.
Two menus were on offer on the evening of our visit, the usual a la carte one and a ‘Best of British’ option, which had been introduced in celebration of the King’s coronation. You could mix and match dishes from either, leaving us spoilt for choice.
I chose from the latter menu to start and was wowed by my homage to a British favourite – fish ‘n’ chips. Monkfish, aerated Hetton Dark Horse beer scraps, crushed garden peas, potato crisps and salt and vinegar gel (£10) had all the flavours of a fish supper and was presented beautifully.
My wife also opted for a seafood dish, this time from the regular menu, choosing a crab salad, radish water, cucumber compression, shallot and a tapioca cracker (£11). Presentation again was top-notch in a dish that was light and full of spring flavours.
Tastes of the season were also evident in our main courses, which both came from the a la carte menu. Lamb rump, garlic, spring cabbage, BBQ cabbage purée, charred broccoli and thyme jus (£28) was perfectly cooked, whilst my venison cushion (£27) was melt-in-the-mouth tender. It’s a dish I’d usually
associate with autumn flavours but served with rhubarb chutney, red onion tart, carrot and juniper it made for the perfect spring dish. We also shared a side order of spring greens (£5).
A bottle of Chilean Maule Valley, Kintu merlot (£25) was the perfect accompaniment to both dishes.
For dessert we again chose from both menus. My wife resist another British classic, which this time came in the form of sticky toffee pudding (£8) and was served with a very good toffee sauce and vanilla ice cream. I opted for a familiar lemon meringue (£9.50), which was served deconstructed with candied lemon, curd, shards of crisp meringue and a basil cream. I missed the crunch of pastry but the classic flavours were all there whilst the addition of the fragrant herb added a touch of freshness.
You may marvel at the panorama afforded by The View Restaurant but you’ll be equally impressed by the food. And service was exemplary too. It’s easy to see why the Coniston gets so much return business. I’d love to go back.

“I’m Chintana, most people know me as Ton. I grew up in a village not far from the city of Ratchuburi in Thailand. I started cooking at a young age and used to cook for all my family.
Mai Dang was my first restaurant I opened when I was 18 years old. Six Years later, I met my husband and we decided to start a family in Doncaster. Then this gave me the opportunity to open the first Thai Restaurant in Doncaster, The Bangkok Thai Restaurant.
Ten years of running a successful business, we wanted to expand and we decided to open the Bangkok Royal Elephant. Now we’re starting a new chapter by opening the only Thai Restaurant in Doncaster, Thai At The Sal.”

Time for Diamonds
Connoisseurs of fine jewellery, precious stones and watches.
What started as a personal passion for watches has grown into over 18 years in the jewellery business for Time for Diamonds owner Mark Burgin.
Although he had admired the quality, craftsmanship and style of high-end watches for more than 20 years, it wasn’t until 2005 that Mark, along with his wife Katie, decided to turn his love for timepieces into a business, selling jewellery.
“We both came from a financial background but this seemed like a great business opportunity,” said Mark, who has never looked back.
Their stylish Bawtry boutique has just undergone a makeover and as well as the updated showroom you can relax in a comfortable ‘linger’ lounge where their team of dedicated, friendly and knowledgeable staff are on hand to offer tailored advice to each individual customer. Private appointments are available with a complimentary glass of fizz.
If you can’t find what you’re looking for in-store, they’ll do their absolute best to find and source just what it is you had in mind.
From beautiful bracelets and necklaces through to a delicate pair of stud earrings, Time for Diamonds has an extensive range to choose from to suit all tastes and budgets. Whether it’s an impressive stone or a more delicate piece, the company strives to achieve uncompromising quality and service through a sense of luxury, refinement and elegance across all products.
New in store are stainless steel CABLETM bracelets from Bailey of Sheffield. The Bailey stainless steel jewellery range is a selection of customisable 316L marine grade stainless steel bracelets available in different colours and finishes alongside a range of collectable beads and necklaces.
Mark has also added Wolf watch winders and storage boxes to his range.
“Many of our items tend to be one of a kind, we don’t stock lots of variations of the same thing as you would perhaps

As well as this uniqueness, Time for Diamonds pride themselves on their customer service and get lots of referrals and repeat business.
If you want to add a more personal touch, you can take part in the design process with their bespoke jewellery service. They can help you create stunning pieces guaranteed to leave you speechless.
For those with jewellery or watches that are looking tired and out of style, Time for Diamonds offers a jewellery remodelling service transforming old pieces into beautiful new additions. They can also repair any defective items at their off-site workshop.

Womens Intimate Health
Many women often suffer in silence or may not be taken seriously when discussing their intimate symptoms with medical providers. Quality of life and intimate relationships can be significantly affected. Dr Farzana is an advanced aesthetic medical practitioner with a special interest in women wellness and menopause. She offers a wide range of treatment for women intimate health including platelet rich plasma therapy (PRP) at The Harrogate Clinic in the spa-town of Yorkshire.
PRP first gained attention because of its use by many top athletes for the purpose of speeding up the healing process with joint related injuries. PRP is now widely used and recognised in the field of aesthetic medicine for rejuvenation of hair, face and the intimate areas in men and women.
PRP is obtained by using the patient’s own blood, similar to having blood drawn for a lab test. That blood is then spun in a centrifuge to separate the red blood cells from the white blood cells and platelets. The platelets are then concentrated and injected back into the patient at the site of injury or pain. PRP contains a high level of growth factors that help increase collagen production and when injected into the affected area may speed up the healing.
Women in the menopause often suffer with symptoms which include painful sex and vaginal dryness. The PRP Sexual rejuvenation also called the “O-Shot” is a drug-free, non-surgical solution that uses the patient’s own platelet-rich plasma (PRP) to stimulate the natural healing process. PRP is suitable for women who are struggling with a range of vaginal issues such as painful sexual intercourse, inability to orgasm, reduced sensation, urinary incontinence, weakness of the vaginal walls and lichen sclerosus.
Lichen sclerosus is a chronic inflammatory skin condition affecting the genital skin (vulva) most commonly after menopause. Symptom of vulval lichen sclerosus include severe itching and soreness. There can be a change in the appearance of the vulva with narrowing of the
entrance of the vagina, which can make sexual intercourse extremely painful. The skin can be prone to tearing and severe scarring, which can interfere with urination. PRP promotes healing and regeneration in the vulval area with an overall improvement in symptoms and less painful intercourse. Most women who have had PRP “O-shot” enjoy an increase in their sexual responses, including stronger and more frequent orgasms, decreased pain for those who suffer with painful intercourse, increased lubrication, and greater arousal sensitivity from stimulation.
Don’t suffer in silence. Book a consultation with Dr Farzana to discuss your intimate health concerns or join her at our open evening on Tuesday 20 June 5.30-7.30pm.

Driving forward
Queen Ethelburga’s Collegiate is driving forward new and exciting extra-curricular opportunities for its students, as it is the first ever school to participate in the Student Motorsport Challenge, which until now, had seen only universities and colleges compete.
The Student Motorsport Challenge was launched at QE by JP from Student Motorsport alongside a team from Oxford Brookes University who visited with a kit to prepare the car and coordinated a “Pit Stop Challenge” to demonstrate what is involved in building a race car. From there, Year 12 students and QE staff worked alongside Race Engineer, Will Snuggs from WJS Motorsport Engineering & Trackside to transform the standard Citroen C1 into a race-ready contender.
Within three weekends, students had already helped strip the car in preparation for fitting new race parts. The car was built in
time to compete in the Nankang Tyre CityCar Cup Championship at Croft Circuit, where the QE Motorsport Team managed a ground-breaking weekend, placing second in Class in the team’s first ever race, and fourth place in both the second and third races. QE Motorsport Team Principal, Helen Snuggs, said: “The enthusiastic student team have worked hard with our driver and have performed amazingly, experiencing everything from building a car to race meeting procedures, live pit wall timings and scrutineering.
“As the first – and only – school competing, we have broken records never been done before. Our driver, Arthur Simondet, has been so engaging and he consistently won the fastest lap for the SMC (Novice) category in our car. Now, we are looking forward to competing at Anglesey and the other four race weekends.”
Matt Clayton, Head of Co-Curricular at QE, believes that “The Student Motorsport Challenge is a marvellous opportunity for students and has become a fantastic addition to QE’s large co-curricular programme, which is always expanding. I’m thrilled with how the whole team has embraced the experience with a real sense of camaraderie and collaboration and to see a second place in our first ever race of our first ever championship is outstanding.”
To find out more about QE Motorsport, the school, and its cocurricular options, follow @queenethelburgas on Instagram. Or, if you would like to sponsor the Team QE Motorsport Team, please email motorsport@qe.org

Creating the perfect garden room for you
Father and son Jonathan and Oliver Cotton love creating and building things together.
or someone who now builds garden rooms for a living, you’d expect Jonathan Cotton to come from a background in construction, design or even landscaping. But no, York-based Jonathan actually started his career as a fashion and beauty photographer working mainly in the magazine industry. After meeting his wife they set up their own hairdressing business, which he did for 14 years before taking the drastic step to try something different.
His first experience of building a garden room came when the couple moved into their current home.
“I really wanted a studio/office space but we didn’t really have room in the house,” he said. “We had a large garden so I decided to build a room there instead. I was then asked by one of my wife’s friends if I could build her a salon in her garden. It snowballed from there.”
Orders started to pour in and Jonathan took the positive

steps of setting up Inside Out Design in 2019, which proved to be the perfect time. The property market was booming and then the pandemic came which brought a huge increase in home-working and the need for more space.
“Moving house became really expensive,” adds Jonathan. “When you factor in solicitor fees, stamp duty and moving costs, it’s actually more cost-effective to add a new garden structure.
“Whether you need a home gym, an office, a bar, a guest suite or just some extra living space, we’ll design the perfect garden room for you.”
Inside Out Design offer a complimentary site survey where they can explore every option for your garden room. All buildings are completely bespoke and Jonathan offers a variety of elegant options in all sorts of styles and materials.
The standard build cost includes 100 per cent bespoke garden room design and build, uPVC windows and doors, plastered walls and ceiling, laminate flooring, steel ground screw or concrete foundation, electrical sockets, lights and WiFi connection, certified electrical connection to your main supply, a ten-year guarantee on the structure, roof, windows and doors, five-year guarantee on the cladding.
Available upgrades include aluminium windows and doors, wood or tile flooring, feature walls or wood panels and an extended deck or porch area.
All rooms sit within the parameters of permitted development and conform to building regulations.
And Inside Out Design don’t just stop at garden rooms.
“We like to play and create with wood, experimenting with different materials and textures,” said Jonathan. “Reclaimed wood can make a huge statement and is, of course, much better for the environment.”
Jonathan’s son, Oliver, joined the business last year making it a family concern.
“We both love creating and building things together,” he said. “Just don’t get me started on his LEGO obsession. You’ll never shut him up!”
Inside Out Design work throughout the Yorkshire area and beyond.

Path to Success
Path to Success is an inspiration memoir by Ray Matthews. It follows the Yorkshireman as he aspires to seemingly impossible feats of endurance throughout his life, culminating in 75 marathons in 75 days following his 75th birthday.
Raised in a Catholic, working class family in Rotherham, Ray was forced to make important decisions throughout his youth that would give him the mental strength to endure a series of physically grueling challenges later in life. He became a boxer at the age ten, forging the standards that led to a positive lifestyle and the belief that the difference between the possible and the impossible often lies between our own two ears.
Path of Success documents how we need to be willing to stand on the start line, mentally and physically, because vision without action is nothing more than a dream.
Published by The Book Guild and priced £10.99, the book is available now. Visit www.bookguild.co.uk to find out more.

Royal recognition
An award-winning hairdresser is set to be recognised for his services to charity at Buckingham Palace.
Jeremy Farber, who is the founder and owner of Headfirst hair salon in Alwoodley, North Leeds, has raised over £30,000 for various charities over the last decade. In recognition of his dedication, Jeremy has been invited by the King to attend a garden party at the Palace.
Jeremy said: “It’s not every day you’re invited to meet with royalty in recognition of your work. I’m really looking forward to meeting people from all other walks of life and celebrating the contributions that they have made to their own communities.”
Each year, Jeremy organises a fundraiser for a different charity. He has organised everything from sponsored waxing to family fun days and even turned his salon into a creperie for the day, all in the name of charity. However, he’s been unable to do this over the last few years owing to the COVID-19 pandemic.
