BEAUTY

Quality introduction USING LOCAL EXPERTISE, REBECCA CRAWFORTH’S UNIQUE TOOLS ARE MAKING WAVES IN THE BEAUTY INDUSTRY. he beauty industry has grown into one of the biggest in the world, making it a great place for those with brilliant new ideas to make a name for themselves. While it may now be easier to get your foot in the door, ideas are under more intense scrutiny than ever before, as consumers demand higher quality products. Starting a new business may not be simple or easy, but when you’ve got an idea as unique as Rebecca Crawforth’s, the industry makes room for you, with nail technicians to the Kardashians and Oprah Winfrey already taking notice. Owner of two successful salons, winner of numerous awards, employer of over 40 members of staff and supermum of two, Rebecca dreamt up Navy Professional Tools after falling ill in her late twenties. Taking time off to concentrate on herself and her family, it occurred to Rebecca that the beauty industry was heavily relying on substandard tooling which was often adapted from other industries, such as dentistry and watchmaking, and she knew this had to change. “I knew it and so did my colleagues,” says Rebecca. “After illness stopped me doing what I loved, I took a risk and invested everything into this new

T

concept – the fact that globally renowned beauty professionals are actively advocating my products is amazing, and just goes to show how important an issue the Navy Pro brand is addressing for the industry.” Rebecca scoured the globe to find a manufacturer who would, and could, meet her need for exceptional quality and longevity, before convincing a local family-run Sheffield manufacturer to take a chance on the concept. Manufacturing professional tools for brow, lash and nail technicians, as well as hygiene and aftercare sets, Navy Pro Tools are made using a unique titanium coating which gives each tool added strength and durability, with the added benefit that bacteria is unable to adhere to it – and it’s also what gives them their signature gold colouring. Dr Patricia Fenton MB BS (NHS Trust Director of Infection and Prevention Control 2002-2013) has worked with Rebecca to develop the brand’s hygiene compliance, and says: “The beauty industry is one of the largest and fastest growing in the world. It’s a serious business, and so hygiene and quality tools are now of paramount importance. The Navy Pro range plugs this gap, and it’s about time too.” Not only are the tools in the Navy

collection hygienic and visually stunning, they smell pretty great too. Probably not the first thing you think of when you’re looking to get your hands on a new pair of tweezers, but a pretty great added bonus, right? Navy Pro Tools teamed up with a Yorkshire based perfumer and aromachologist to create a unique Navy scent inspired by the Yorkshire white rose and Rebecca’s happy memories, with each accent having a special meaning to her. Expect notes of rose, sandalwood, amber and orange blossom to come with every purchase – plus, they’ve even come out with a candle in the brand’s own unique scent. Looking positively towards the brand’s future, Rebecca says: “Now is the time to ensure beauticians and technicians are carrying their tools with pride. No longer is beauty the high school drop-out career choice, but an industry which is free from discrimination and limitations, where you can choose what success you want simply by how hard you wish to work. “I’m confident that this range of tools will help professionals across the globe take their careers to the next level, safe in the knowledge that they are compliant with the highest of quality standards.” www.navyprofessional.com Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk 17

Now in their eighth year, there’s no question of the skill held by the pair and their team, and the recognition they received at the Saks Gathering is evidence of this. Saks Doncaster took home the award for Hair Salon of the Year – proving that the team’s efforts over the past year to explore their creative bounds has not gone unnoticed. There are countless factors that helped the team win this prestigious award, not least their dedication to embracing all things new and their ability to provide clients with a perfect finished look each and every time they visit the salon. With products from Kérastase, L’Oreal Professional and Redken, and tools from ghd and their own Saksessories, the team at Saks create hairstyles that rival the most popular celebrity looks. LET G&M HEALTH CARE WITH ALEVERE TRANSFORM YOUR LIFE AND YOUR BODY. dread to think where I would be now if I had not started the Alevere programme when I did. I was deteriorating fast as a person.” James Jayawardena’s weight loss difficulties started in April 2016 when his GP diagnosed him with high blood pressure, high cholesterol and prediabetes. “Something had to give as my weight had really started to creep up over the last few years, and, at 22-and-a-half stone, I was starting to become increasingly aware that if I did not do anything about it I was exposing myself to potentially irreversible and serious health implications.” James was worried that his demanding lifestyle would mean it was impossible for him to lose weight, however, as soon as he started on the Alevere programme he was convinced that the team at G&M Healthcare could help him. “My initial concerns were about being hungry, as I ate quite large portions and would often graze during the day. I worked out that I was eating 600/700 calories between meals and I was really worried; I didn’t need to be. “I was apprehensive going into the programme, but once you’re in, the staff walk you through everything, and you feel at ease straight away.” Alevere quickly taught James that losing weight is about understanding food and the effects of various ingredients in food – ensuring you don’t deprive yourself but you take a regular, balanced approach. “I began Alevere with an open mind and the thing that I found most refreshing was that the programme was not about dieting but about making permanent adjustments to my lifestyle.

“ I

“I started losing weight very quickly, it was like an overnight transformation. My clothes started to feel too big and people started to notice too, you don’t get any more motivational than that. “Losing weight does not mean giving up everything you enjoy eating. In fact, the pleasure of eating something ‘unhealthy’ is better when it becomes an occasional treat, rather than a regular and ignored part of your diet.” After three months on the programme James had lost almost seven stone, and was starting to feel much more confident again, and has since continued his weight-loss journey. “I was losing 3kg every week, so it was great to get on the scales and realise how much I had lost overall – and that made me want to carry on. I liked the routine of the programme and the big weekly weight loss was a great motivation, I became very focused. “With good planning and listening the programme is adaptable, I wouldn’t say it was easy, it took willpower, but I didn’t feel hungry and my energy levels were noticeably higher to myself and others. “Alevere isn’t a diet, because it changes your philosophy completely. It teaches you to eat normal but healthy food, and retrains you on how you should eat. “The programme is now part of my daily life without me being obsessed with it and by what I can and can’t be eating. I have changed how I eat for good – I

eat regularly and I still have what I want, but I don’t snack all the time.” James has discovered a whole new way of life, and, though he knows there is no magic wand to losing weight, he has seen that with help and support it is achievable. “Alevere has totally changed my life. People always comment that I am now a completely different person and approach things in a different way. “Grace, Sarah and all the staff, therapists and nutritionists are extremely knowledgeable and there’s always as line of communication and support available and you feel like part of a little community. “I firmly believe in Alevere and want others to see how it has worked for me. If I had one regret it would be that I did not start the programme sooner.” G&M Healthcare Located at Rotherham Super Bowl & Oasis Health Club, Wortley Road, Rotherham, S61 1QN Tel: 01709 558509 www.gandmhealthcare.com Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk 21

HEALTH

Happy mums = happy children RECOGNISING THAT MUMS OFTEN NEED A GENTLE PUSH WHEN IT COMES TO ACHIEVING THEIR HEALTH GOALS, TERRI-ANN NUNNS AND KATIE PIPER JOINED FORCES TO CREATE THE HEALTHY HAPPY MUM PLAN. e know deep down that fad diets never work; the results are short-lived and before you know it you’re back to where you started, so why do we waste valuable time on them rather than finding a real solution to our problems? Most women will struggle with their weight and body confidence at some point or another, and it can be an even harder challenge to face for those of us with little ones. For some reason many of us don’t feel right taking the time out to look after ourselves, but how can we expect to take the best care of our children if we’re not taking proper care of our own wellbeing? Katie Piper and Terri-Ann Nunns met through mutual friends, and after discussing their respective journeys as mothers, came together to create The Healthy Happy Mum Plan, doing away with the idea that you need to spend an hour at the gym every day to get the body you want. Founder of the hugely successful TerriAnn 123 Diet Plan, Terri-Ann knew the importance of creating something affordable that not only aided weight loss, but other factors such as overall

health and fitness, mental wellbeing, and offering a level of support not available through many other diet plans. “We wanted to help and support women, not just with their diet plan but with their mental wellbeing, being mindful and just taking time out for themselves, so it’s more of a focus on that sort of thing, not just the weight loss side,” says Terri-Ann. “We’re able to support and encourage mums, especially new mums when they feel at quite a low point when they’ve just had a baby. “To be able to lift them back up and get them back on track, get them loving themselves again, loving their bodies again and helping them realise that having a baby is an amazing thing and

“For me this wasn’t a short term fix – it’s a lifestyle and a way to be, and stay, a Healthy, Happy Mum.” – Katie Piper

not to rush losing weight but to do it healthily.” The Healthy Happy Mum Plan isn’t about trying to look like a fitness model, but about educating and supporting women to achieve realistic goals. Women joining the plan will receive an easy to follow manual, filled with healthy eating advice, fitness and wellbeing tips, blank food diaries, shopping tips, an eating out guide and more. The plan also includes a lifetime membership to the online member hub, where dieters have access not only to support from other women on the plan but personal support from Katie, TerriAnn and the team. With simple recipes, expert dietician advice, and meal and exercise plans, The Healthy Happy Mum Plan allows women the freedom to work around their busy schedules while still being able to achieve the goals they set themselves. No gimmicks, no points, no banned foods, just a simple guide to help women be the best versions of themselves. SPRING CLEAN

Declutter and de-stress REORGANISING YOUR HOME IS GOOD FOR BODY, MIND AND SOUL. PHOEBE FULLER GETS ADVICE FROM INTERNET SENSATIONS MARIE KONDO AND MRS HINCH. or the uninitiated (I was myself, until recently!), Marie Kondo and Mrs Hinch happen to be two of the biggest names in cleaning and home organisation of the moment, so you can trust that you’re in safe hands when you decide to take the plunge and start this big spring clean! Having taken the internet – and Netflix, would you believe?! – by storm, Marie Kondo is certainly flavour of the week for people who can’t seem to shake the clutter. Appealing to the recent minimalism trend, MK wants to spread the joy of tidying up and firmly believes that a tidy home is a happy home. She’s even written a book on the subject, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organising, so tidying is an art-form these days, who knew? If you’ve ever watched her in action (seriously, tune in to her show on Netflix) it’s no surprise that so many people are converted although, I must say, the best part is how many people apparently don’t know how to fold t-shirts. Marie has built an entire career around… well, being good at tidying away other people’s clutter, although I think she prefers her

F

actual title: organising consultant. Yes, you’re in very safe hands indeed. But tidying would be useless if you didn’t follow it up with a good deep clean, wouldn’t it? That’s certainly a sentiment that Mrs Hinch, the Essex-based hairdresser turned cleaning guru, shares. She went viral with her Instagram posts detailing her ingenious (and cheap!) cleaning tips and hacks, quickly racking up an enormous social media following that have been dubbed the ‘Hinch Army’ who follow her tips, tricks, and product recommendations obsessively – which may be why you can never seem to find any bottles of Zoflora on the shelves of your local Sainsbury’s. Mrs Hinch – real name, Sophie Hinchcliffe – has jumped on the book bandwagon too, and details the way cleaning has helped her to deal with anxiety in her debut, Hinch Yourself Happy: All the Best Cleaning Tips to Shine Your Sink and Soothe Your Soul. I might buck the trend and see if I can find commercial success with a book on the joy of mess and clutter, watch this space…

SPRING CLEAN

Tips for organisation from Marie Kondo: 1. Tidy by category, not room

The Marie Kondo method is based around the following system: begin by organising your clothes – whichever room they may be from – followed by books, then papers and documents, miscellaneous items, and lastly, sentimental items. Saving your sentimental items until last is so you can’t use tidying up as an excuse to grab a bottle of wine and spend hours gushing over old photographs… 2. Piles! Piles of stuff!

Effective organisation, according to Marie Kondo, begins with what can only be described as pure chaos – overwhelm yourself before you’ve even begun by throwing everything from one category into a foreboding, bonfire-like pile. By putting it all into a pile you’re forced to confront the extent of your collection and… oh sod it, you know what? You’ll probably need that bottle of wine, after all! 3. Discard, but thankfully

Wine in hand, it’s time to begin getting rid of items from each pile that you no longer want to hold on to but – there’s a catch – before you chuck an item into the ‘nah’ pile, you’ve got to thank that item for its service. Yes, you read correctly, thank an inanimate object. Supposedly, this will assist you in severing ties with said item and help you in moving onto the items that… 4. …Spark joy!

Arguably the biggest rule to come from Marie Kondo is that whatever item(s) you choose to keep, they have to fulfil one key purpose: they must ‘spark joy’. This is where some mindfulness comes into play – you confront your big, scary pile of stuff and handle each and every item carefully, the items that spark joy will make you feel immediately happy when you touch them. 5. Do you know how to fold things?

No, you don’t. If you want to live it up a-la-MK, you can’t just fold any old way. Fold your t-shirts, skirts, dresses, and other items of wearable clobber in such a way that they can stand up in your drawers; this shall be a strict hanger-free zone. Standing clothes in a drawer saves space, allowing more room in your wardrobe for items that can’t be folded easily (jackets, shoes…). 26 Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk

How to ‘Hinch’ your home: 1. Keep your sink sparkling

You might not think that a restful sleep begins with a clean sink but, for Mrs Hinch, it does. She makes sure to give her sink and plughole a deep clean every night before bed which, honestly, seems a little unhinched (geddit?) to me. She pours soda crystals down the plughole, followed by white vinegar and then flushes through with a capful of Zoflora to disinfect and freshen. 2. Holy grail products

Mrs Hinch has a huge arsenal of cleaning products for everything from the windows to the sofa, but she swears by multi-purpose products that can really do it all. Two of her favourites? A Minky sponge, and a tub of The Pink Stuff which works wonders for getting rid of tough stains on ovens, oven racks, worktops, sinks, and everything in between. 3. Skirt the dirt

Even the skirting boards aren’t safe from a good scrub and Mrs Hinch has an unusual tip for getting them gleaming: fabric softener. She swears by a mixture of fabric softener and water to clean and de-scuff the boards without stripping them of paint and, of course, the trusty Minky sponge is her weapon of choice for this task! 4. Freshen up your bin

To really kick things up a notch, make sure you give your bin it’s very own dousing of perfume. Well, not really, but soaking some kitchen roll in Zoflora and keeping it in the bottom of your bin will give the same effect. If you’re relatively unbothered about making sure your bin smells of flowers every time you walk past it, then congratulate yourself on not having completely lost the plot just yet! 5. Maybe just buy a show home instead?

Let’s be real for a minute, who really has the time to deep clean their sink and plughole every night before bed, wash every skirting board in their house at least once a week, and still care enough to concern themselves with making their bin smell like a posy? Perhaps it’s best to keep these tips for those unexpected days off when you’ve got the time to go hard… at home.

The return of the flat HERITAGE HANDICAP MARKS THE OFFICIAL OPENING OF THE UK FLAT RACING SEASON AT DONCASTER. he flat season begins on Saturday 30 March with the traditional curtain-raiser, the Lincoln Handicap, sponsored by UNIBET. The heritage handicap marks the official opening of the UK flat racing season, showcasing world-class racing on Town Moor. Established in 1849 in Lincolnshire and run over a distance of two miles, the Lincolnshire handicap was transferred to Doncaster in 1965 following the closure of racing at Lincoln’s West Common, and became known as the Lincoln handicap. The highlight of the racecard is of course the UNIBET Lincoln heritage handicap worth a significant £100,000 in prize money. 2018 was a record breaking year, as we witnessed Addeybb’s impressive performance, securing a fourth victory for Yorkshire trainer William Haggas, who’s first success in the mile feature came in 1992 with High Low. Ridden by

T

jockey James Doyle the four-year old Addeybb won authoritatively by two and three-quarter lengths. The success of Addeybb enabled Haggas to join the record books, as the event’s leading trainer in recent years, equal to Jack Robinson, who celebrated wins between 1896-1910. Alongside exciting racing, this year’s Lincoln comes with a twist, a Motown twist. Doncaster Racecourse celebrates the best of soul; after racing has finished, Town Moor will become Motown Moor

with live music being provided by The Drifters lead vocalist, Roy Hemmings, and his eight-piece soul band. Roy is no stranger to big occasions and having performed in the White House on more than one occasion, this is an after party not to be missed! A full day at the races, and the best of Motown is just £20pp. Continuing the American theme into the weekend, the UNIBET Wild West Family Fun Raceday, on Sunday 31 March, will provide entertainment for the whole family, this Mother’s Day. Along with an afternoon of thrilling flat racing, families can expect a Western Stunt Show, Rodeo Bull, the Saloon Bar Shootout Gallery, Cactus Hoopla, and Cowboys and Cowgirls. In addition to the family fun day favourites there will be pony rides, fairground rides, and of course the must see Shetland Pony Race. A Mother’s Day family day out is available for just £19 per family.

THE VOTING FOR THE 2019 EASTSIDE RESTAURANT AWARDS IS NOW OPEN – FIND OUT HOW YOU CAN GET INVOLVED. he search is on for the finest dining establishments across the Doncaster, Rotherham and North Notts region, as we launch the 2019 Eastside Restaurant Awards. This glamorous black tie event has quickly become established as one of the big nights of the year in the social calendar; it also offers a huge boost to the local restaurant scene, as the winners enjoy their moment of triumph and all the nominated restaurants bask in the glow of positive publicity. Last year’s big winners were The Cadeby Pub and Restaurant who scooped two prizes on the night – Best Pub Restaurant and the coveted Eastside Restaurant of the Year. Now the search is on again to find the venues that have truly excelled in the art of delivering delicious food in a superlative setting. All our recent award winners have been superb, so expectations are high. Here’s a reminder to all restaurant, hotel, café and pub owners: to make sure your establishment is under consideration for the big prizes in 2019, contact Eastside’s publishing manager Terri Moore at terri.moore@ rmcmedia.co.uk

Eastside readers… get involved Just like last year we want you to join us in making sure our final verdict is a true reflection of what paying customers across the region really think. Eastside’s team of reviewers will be out and about over the next six months, checking out established and new restaurants, and searching for the best the region has to offer. We will bring our own opinions to bear of course, but we also know Eastside readers are a discerning bunch

who travel the region to experience the best restaurants, bistros and gastro pubs. That’s why we now give our readers a bigger say. After we have done the rounds of the region’s finest eateries we’ll be publishing our shortlist of the best restaurants in all categories, from best pub to best contemporary. Once the shortlists are revealed, we’ll be asking our readers to have their say on the best in each category. We’ll add up the reader votes, put them with our judges’ own views and come up with the best of the best. Sounds a bit like how the voting works on Strictly Come Dancing, doesn’t it? OK, this is Eastside’s version…Strictly Come Dining! That comes later in the year… we’ll be publishing our shortlists in the September issue of Eastside. ***

Eastside Readers’ Choice Award 2019 You can get involved now by casting your vote for the Eastside Readers’ Choice. Whether you select your favourite local cafe, a much-loved Indian or Italian restaurant or any other type of food venue, all votes are equal. Last year’s winner was Fish Bits, the Doncaster-based family restaurant and grill. Everyone who casts a vote will be entered into a draw, and one lucky winner will receive dinner for two at their favourite restaurant. Voting is free: simply go online to www.rmcmedia.co.uk/events to let us know where you have enjoyed eating out most over the last 12 months. All entries must include a home address and contact details, any multiple entries from the same email address will be disqualified. Closing date: Friday 30 August.

Sponsorship packages: Find out about our sponsorship packages available to impartial businesses (i.e not restaurants) to sponsor one of the awards and marketing opportunities. Email Terri Moore terri.moore@rmcmedia.co.uk for further details.

2018 judges Michael Price and Elizabeth Freedman

Join our Judging Panel We also want to give Eastside readers a voice on the independent judging panel that decides the ultimate prize – the Eastside Restaurant of the Year. New lease of life MAKE THE STATION RESTAURANT, BAR & HOTEL YOUR NEXT STOP... WITH A NEW LOOK, NEW MENU AND NEW APPEAL TO FAMILIES, IT’S BECOME A REAL SOCIAL HUB. f you haven’t visited the Station Restaurant, Bar & Hotel, Blaxton for a while you’ve been missing out... and you’re probably in for a very pleasant surprise! When new landlady Elle Bolland saw that this landmark pub was available last year she immediately saw the opportunity to breathe new life into a previously popular venue that was crying out for a little TLC... “Before we started the renovation, The Station was looking extremely old, it was a rundown drinking pub which was well overdue a complete facelift,” Elle recalls. But Elle saw that beyond the tired facade of what The Station had become was a brilliant opportunity to reinvent it as a social hub with a real family feel. “The Station is a fantastic location so we saw a lot of potential with it being so close to the airport and a lot of new houses getting built close by,” she added. “Also, with Blaxton being such a lovely village there seemed to be a large gap in

the market to open a family-orientated pub.” One of the first changes Elle and the team made was to put a strong emphasis on delicious, home-cooked food and a new menu, just launched, offers precisely that from Tuesday to Saturday, with a Sunday lunch menu every week from 12.30pm. Alongside this they also offer stone-baked fresh pizzas, which are also available to takeaway. The main improvements were completed just in time for a preChristmas opening but outside the pub the next stages of the redevelopment are

close to completion and will be ready for relaxed alfresco times in the summer. Finishing touches are being made now to the completion of a beer garden on the side of the pub, which is going to feature a gin/prosecco hut as well as an outside fire pit. There will also be a large children’s play area so you can sit back and relax in the summer months whilst your children are safe and occupied. Once this is competed Elle will move on to the next stage of the challenge – refurbishing the hotel rooms at the side of the pub. Check out the fantastic changes at The Station soon. Wednesdays are proving particularly popular with a fantastic dining offer – every Wednesday from 5pm there is a pizza and prosecco deal with two pizzas and a bottle of prosecco or wine for just £18.95. Meanwhile, check the website for future special events and offers for Mother’s Day, Easter weekend and the May bank holiday. Elle adds: “We now cater for a wider variety of people, with delicious homecooked food served in a gorgeous, classy décor. We offer a wide variety of spirits, wines, beers and cask ales with a cosy seating area for those cold winter evenings next to a warm fire. “Within The Station there is also a sports room showing both Sky and BT Sports on a large flat screen TV.”

IN BRIEF

Mr Sloth arrives in South Anston The latest resident at the Tropical Butterfly House has been anything but slow to cause a stir! The first ever sloth has been receiving a warm, ‘tropical’ welcome by staff and visitors alike as he settles in to his new home, just in time to help Mr Sloth explores his new home at the Butterfly House © Tropical Butterfly House, celebrate the 25th anniversary Wildlife & Falconry Centre in March 2019. The only sloth local to South Yorkshire, he was born in Amsterdam and has been living in Hamerton Zoo, Cambridgeshire for the last 18 years where he was never named but simply referred to as Mr Sloth. At 29 years old, this male Linnaeus’s two-toed sloth lives in the heights of the Butterfly House where his neighbours include butterflies, lorikeets and turtles. Sloths are native to South America and are unique in the animal world for spending most of their time upside down. They are solitary creatures and can live up to 50 years in captivity. Animal team leader, Abigail Carter, was part of the team who undertook the two-hour journey to bring him to the park and oversees his settling in, says: “Like the cliché says, our sloth slept all the way to his new home. Having him here at the wildlife park is such a fantastic move forward for us and I have no doubt he will be very popular.” The Tropical Butterfly House, Wildlife & Falconry Centre is open daily, all year round and is located just five minutes from the M1, junction 31, with free parking. www.butterflyhouse.co.uk

Monte Carlo stop at Retford hotel Ye Olde Bell Hotel & Spa once again hosted drivers taking part in the historic rally run to Monte Carlo. The hotel in Barnby Moor, on the borders of Nottinghamshire, Yorkshire and Lincolnshire, was an important control point in the rally, staged by the Automobile Club de Monaco (ACM). Drivers travelled across Europe to make the 1,500-mile trip to the South of France. The Historique Class was run for the 22nd year and was restricted to car models which competed in the Monte Carlo Rallies between 1955 and 1980. Hotel manager, Kate Firth, commented: “We originally hosted the check point back in the 1950s so we are extremely proud that we are still able to play a small part in this amazing event in 2019.”

WELCOME

Spring is in the air and as we look forward to longer days and soaring temperatures, plans are well under way at Bawtry Retail Association (BRA) for this year’s Bawtry Fashion Week, which will take place between 18 and 24 March. Bawtry is home to some of the leading fashion labels and boutiques that boast the most enviable achievements, with Yasmine of Bawtry being established since 1974, Robinsons of Bawtry over 30 years and Incognito celebrating 20 years in business! Our fashion week is set to be packed with events, offers and opportunities to enjoy every aspect of fashion. Looking ahead we are in discussions with Doncaster Racecourse with regards to the annual Visit Bawtry Race Meeting on Saturday 27 April which has always been a fantastic social event and this year will be its ninth year. Congratulations to Victoria Jarvie and Amy Sallabank who have set up the Bawtry Polo Club at Misson and are having a polo-themed cocktail launch party on 2 March at Bawtry Hall. The club is keen to become a family-friendly venue and to foster mutually beneficial relationships with other businesses and

contribute to the Bawtry experience. A date has also been scheduled for this year’s Visit Bawtry Polo Cup so keep Sunday 14 July clear. Last year’s Bawtry Christmas event was the largest attended event with over 3,000 people – plans are already underway for this year’s event which will take place on 24 November. Yorkshire Caravans of Bawtry is proud to announce its eighth annual Yorkshire Caravan Show which will run from 9 to 17 March including savings and deals across the full range of new and preowned caravans plus a host of product demonstrations from industry leading professionals. Other noteworthy events include a Big Community Event – fun for all the family at Bawtry’s Big Easter Hunt & Fayre at Bawtry MSG on Saturday 6 April; and it’s a Happy Wedding Day to Eastside publishing manager Terri Moore (soon to be Terri Holt) who gets married on 28 March in Austria. As you can see we’ve got lots on as we all work together to make Bawtry even better and more brilliant. POLO

Fresh approach THE POLO CLUB AT MISSON SPRINGS HAS NEW OWNERS, A NEW NAME AND A NEW OUTLOOK. he name remains the same and so does the venue, but it’s all change and a completely fresh start at Bawtry Polo Club (BPC). There is a new team in charge and a completely fresh approach, with the aim to attract more local interest in this exciting, fast-paced sport. BPC is a polo and events venue in Misson Springs, on the outskirts of Bawtry. They offer polo lessons, livery and a vibrant, family-friendly social scene, making it an ideal backdrop for polo tournaments throughout the Spring/Summer season. Following the closure of the previous club last year, BPC have opened a new club in the same location, with new people, new ponies and an entirely new ethos. Plans for BPC include having a high standard of horse care, and welcoming clients into the polo family. Polo is an exciting sport with an equally enjoyable social scene off the pitch but the new custodians of the sport in South Yorkshire are determined nobody should feel excluded. “We want as much of a ‘coffee and cake’ culture as we do a ‘Pimms and Party’ scene,” they say.

T

This is a completely fresh start for BPC with no connection between the new team in charge and the previous clubs. The club is being run by Amy Sallabank and Victoria Jarvie, who formed a friendship through polo several years ago. Amy has played and worked in polo all over the world and is an ambitious and capable player. Her ample experience running polo yards make her the ideal person to take up the mantle of BPC’s polo and yard manager. Victoria has ridden all her life, including working with horses, but will

be utilising her background in marketing to establish a desirable and trustworthy BPC brand, liaising with sponsors and ensuring the smooth running of events. Marquee events for 2019 include Visit Bawtry Polo Day (14 July) and a Ladies’ Tounament (24-25 August) with various other events planned. More details will be available nearer the time. If anyone wants to get involved, come along to one of the events or book a lesson or get in touch via the Facebook page (Bawtry Polo Club), Instagram (BawtryPoloClub) or website (www.BawtryPoloClub.co.uk).

EVENT

Bawtry Hall set to sparkle

L-R: Organisers of last year’s event, Katey of Bawtry Hall, Kim of DB4C and Sarah Mullen of Equinox

DONCASTER BUSINESS COMMUNITY READY TO SHINE AT THE DIAMOND BALL. oncaster’s business community will once more be dressed to the nines and ready to party at the second Doncaster Business for the Community Annual Ball, which will again be held in the magnificent surroundings of Bawtry Hall on 28 September. The theme this year will be “Diamonds” and DB4C are predicting that the jewels of Doncaster’s business community will be polished and ready to dazzle at the event. Last year’s inaugural event, “The Crystal Ball”, saw 200 guests in attendance raising £4,000 for Equinox supporting Cancer Research UK and Firefly Cancer Awareness and Support and was a sell out within days of going live. It is anticipated that this year’s event will do the same, with many of last year’s guests already expressing their wish to attend, so places will be limited. The ball is the flagship event of Doncaster Business for the Community, the ground-breaking and highly innovative charitable trust run entirely by the town’s business community which raises much needed funds for local charities and community projects. The charity is delighted to again be working

in partnership with Equinox and Firefly to raise funds to support the excellent work they do in supporting those affected by cancer. Guests will once more be greeted with a champagne reception and entertained with live music whilst they dine, followed by a lively series of fundraising activities and opportunities to win some outstanding prizes. Guests will then be treated to a stunning fireworks display in the grounds of Bawtry Hall followed by dancing to live music and a disco into the early hours. Time for Diamonds of Bawtry will be an event sponsor and the lucky guests will have the chance to win a £2,000 solitaire diamond pendant. DB4C director Nigel Tomlinson said: “DB4C is now well into its second year

of operations with an ever growing number of events and supporters. The Annual DB4C Ball is no different and is already firmly established in the social calendar. DB4C has achieved so much since its inception, proving that the town’s businesses have a huge heart and care deeply about the community and its well-being.” Sarah Mullen added: “For Equinox to be asked to be the representative of our charities at the Diamond Ball is a huge privilege. Both Cancer Research and Firefly rely on donations and charity fundraising to operate and both play such a huge part in the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of cancer both nationally and locally. The Doncaster business community have taken Equinox to their hearts and with the money raised at this year’s Ball we hope to have a record fundraising year.” To book a table please contact Kim at DB4C on 01302 965555 or email kim.tomlinson@hotmail.co.uk.
