elcome to the March edition of Eastside.
This month we look at the recent opened Danum Gallery, Library and Museum, which has been built around the old High School for Girls. It’s a striking addition to the town and is a great way to learn about its heritage and more. Bawtry comes under our spotlight as we look at what makes the town such a charming destination - we look at why it’s ‘back in business’. Plus, we think spring for the home and garden, as well as your beauty regime, and also look ahead to Mother’s Day.

Community hub DONCASTER GALLERY, LIBRARY AND MUSEUM HAS TRANSFORMED THE OLD HIGH SCHOOL FOR GIRLS AND BECOME THE CENTREPIECE FOR THE TOWN’S CULTURAL QUARTER. ehind the original façade of the historic Doncaster Girls High School lies a vast collection of artefacts revealing the story of Doncaster’s past. You can journey through the town’s past as a Roman settlement, market town and industrial powerhouse, discover the famous people who came from the area and learn about the its part in national and international events. Doncaster Gallery, Library and Museum (DGLAM) opened in May last year – a whole 12 months later than planned – and is waiting to be discovered. It is housed in a fantastic new building in the heart of Doncaster’s cultural quarter which makes best use of the original school. Doncaster High School For Girls was designed by J. M. Bottomley and G. T. Wellburn of Leeds and built in 1910 in an Edwardian Baroque style. Much of the original facade has been retained and is now housed behind a glass wall making for a striking appearance that marries old and new. As well as the museum and library the building is also home to a gallery which

made in doncaster Joseph Wright of Derby among others. You will also find the King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry Regimental Museum and the Rail Heritage Centre, the latter of which is housed on the ground floor and includes two Doncaster-built locomotives which have returned home to take centre stage in the Danum – No. 251 ‘Atlantic’ Locomotive and the Green Arrow. They are on loan as part of a partnership between Heritage Doncaster and the National Railway Museum. And don’t miss the Museum of You – made up entirely of objects loaned by the people of Doncaster, this is a hugely personal exhibit that shares the story of local people’s experiences of 2020. To find out more about DHLAM, we spoke to Amanda Matheson. The Rail Heritage Centre

The new building looks fantastic, when

did you open?
We opened the Danum in May 2021 for pre-booked tours under Covid restrictions but we also held a virtual opening in March which allowed people to virtually step inside the building on our website to learn more about what the Danum had to offer. This received over 70,000 virtual visits and hundreds of positive comments from people sharing their enthusiasm and excitement
about being able to visit once restrictions were lifted, we also had a virtual guestbook featuring message of support from well-known Doncastrians including Brian Blessed and Sheridan Smith.
Tell us one thing about the new building that we don’t already know.
It’s built on the site of Doncaster High School for Girls - why did you choose that location?
What’s your favourite part of the building?
The Girls School is such a fantastic piece of Doncaster’s history and architecture so we didn’t want to demolish that. Originally we hoped to use more of the building but it wasn’t possible due to the condition so instead the plan became to build around the original Edwardian frontage which is such a stunning focal point. It really reflects the ethos of the building, combining old and new to celebrate our heritage while learning and exploring something new in the library or museum.
There’s a time capsule buried in the building which will hopefully be discovered and opened in 100 years!
It’s difficult to choose just one because every area offers something different but the art gallery is so peaceful and has a great vibe to it – I can spend too long being distracted from work in there! Do you feel as if the new Danum gallery, museum and library will become a social hub for the people of Doncaster?
It is already proving to be – it’s been really exciting to see more visitors venture out for their first visit! Café 1910 has proven really popular with Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk 11

locals and there really is something for everyone in the building which encourages people to come back again and again. We’re also seeing more young people come in after school and during exam time which is really encouraging. What’s the reaction been like so far?
“Our staff have been so touched by the lovely messages from visitors and we’re gtting people coming from further away to visit and all sorts of different people, from train enthusiasts to artists.”
The feedback has been excellent – lots of people talk about the feel of the Danum and how it can be relaxing but also has a great buzz to it. Our staff have been so touched by the lovely messages from visitors and we’re gtting people coming from further away to visit and all sorts of different people, from train enthusiasts to artists. How many Doncaster locals contributed to the Museum of You?
Our aim from the beginning was to create a museum that everyone could find a little bit of themselves in. The Museum of You is central to this and was an opportunity for people from local communities to be the curator and share their stories and objects with museum visitors. We went out into communities and engaged with people from all over the borough who loaned items for display in the Museum of You. Some of 12 Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk

the objects reflect how locals experienced global events like the Covid-19 pandemic and Black Lives Matter movement.
Will the gallery, museum and library be running events/exhibitions over the next few months?
What else will we find in the museum?
We work closely with community groups and were really keen to have a museum that could reflect people’s lives and especially have dementia-friendly features. That’s why a lot of the interactive areas are designed with a 1960s theme like our recreated living room and shop. At the same time, areas like the shop have a lot of features for children to interact with so people of all ages can enjoy their visit. On display we have some pretty interesting objects like the Danum shield which is a very rare type of roman shield found in the remains of the original Danum Roman Fort in Doncaster around 71AD. What was the process of getting the trains into the Rail Heritage Centre?
Believe it or not, they came via the motorway! They were loaded onto lorries and driven to Doncaster on a quiet Sunday afternoon in the middle of the pandemic! We had tracks built into the Rail Heritage Centre so they could be positioned into place – if it hadn’t been during lockdown I think we would have had crowds of people turning up to see their arrival!
the Moving Museum in 2021 which takes the museum to people’s doorsteps and encourages residents to tell their stories and feature their objects in community displays. Do you think the Danum gallery, museum and library will change tourism in Doncaster?
I think it will play a really significant role in increasing tourism to Doncaster along with all the other amazing attractions we have to offer here. From the racecourse to the heritage sites like Cusworth Hall and Conisbrough Castle there’s so much to do and see – after you spend the day exploring the Danum.
We’re really fortunate to be able to display artworks from someof the national galleries and museums on touring exhibitions – bringing amazing cultural experiences to people in Doncaster without the need to travel further. We’ve already hosted a touring exhibition from the British Museum and at the moment the art gallery is exhibiting Double Take featuring artworks by famous artists including Henry Moore, Eduardo Paolozzi, Gwen John and Maggi Hambling, many of them on loan from the Arts Council Collection. The loaned artworks are displayed alongside paintings and sculptures from Doncaster’s own collection and highlights the connections between them. Double Take is free to view and runs until 16 April. We’ll also be holding free events for families in the Easter and Summer holidays – keep an eye on our website for more details www.dglam.org.uk
Are there any plans to extend further?
Our focus is to build on our partnerships in Doncaster’s communities and cultural network and expand our events and exhibitions programme now that things are opening up again. We also launched Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk 13

BAWTRY
Gateway to Yorkshire SET A COURSE FOR BAWTRY, AND DISCOVER THE BEST THAT TOWN HAS TO OFFER. BY MARIA ILIFFE.
nown as the ‘Gateway to Yorkshire’, as the southernmost house carries the prestigious address, Number 1 Yorkshire, Bawtry is an impressive market town bustling with people and attractions. Expect genteel Georgian architecture and an abundance of independent boutiques, cosy cafes, restaurants, artisan experts, cocktail bars and local pubs. A proud must for history buffs, Bawtry was originally an ancient port on the River Idle and the oldest pub, the White Hart, dates back to 1689. However, the town is actually renowned for its impressive war ties; Bawtry was home to RAF Finningley. During the Second World War Bawtry Hall was the base for RAF No.1 Group Bomber Command and became the headquarters of RAF Strike Command. However, much more historically, Bawtry was an important village on the Great North Road which ran from London to Edinburgh and is now the basis of the A1. At a battle in 616 AD, the Anglo-Saxon King died fighting the King of East Anglia in Bawtry. Later the town primarily exported wool and developed a river port and commercial centre. However, now the town has developed further to the amazing place you know today, with everything from local butchers to designer outlets. With The South Parade, a terrace of stunning Georgian houses on one hand and The Courtyard, a modern living development that won the Green Apple Awards on the other, Bawtry really has it all. The perfect destination whether you’ve got a few hours free for a glass of wine with friends or a full weekend to indulge and enjoy. When staying, The Crown Hotel is a local favourite, with so much to offer, spend the night like fellow guests singer Ronan Keating and comedian Billy Connolly.

Aircraft Museum
Based on the former RAF Doncaster site, the South Yorkshire Aircraft Museum hosts a vast and exciting collection of aircraft and helicopters from the first years of flight, right up to the modern day! From the biplanes flown at the 1909 Doncaster Airshow (the First airshow held in the UK) to Military fast Jets like the Harrier and Meteor and Civil light aircraft. A great attraction for all the family, whatever the weather, with indoor and outdoor seating, café and shop.
Bawtry is back in business! It’s been fantastic to see Bawtry coming back to life as things have returned to normal. There’s been a great buzz about the place and there is much to look forward this summer including the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations which will take place between 2-5 June. Bawtry Town Council are working closely with businesses in the town to plan some celebratory events and organise street bunting and flags to mark this historic occasion. To get the town in the Jubilee mood, all retailers and businesses are being encouraged to decorate their windows and shop fronts with red, white and blue! On Thursday 2 June a beacon lighting event will take place, and on Saturday 4 June marquees will be placed along the Market Place for a celebratory tea party. No sooner will the Jubilee celebrations be over then the Bawtry Arts Festival will be underway. Taking place between 18-25 June, this whole town event will involve all parts of the Bawtry community including individuals, retailers, pubs and restaurant, faith groups and community organisations to celebrate the artistic talent in the town, from painting to piano playing. Preserving the history of the town is also important and fund raising to develop the old public facility block at the top of Gainsborough Road continues. Donations from businesses and members of the public would be gratefully received to allow the town to transform the building into Bawtry Heritage Visitor Centre which will incorporate a changing place facility, making Bawtry fully inclusive. In addition to the flagship events remember that Bawtry is a great destination for shopping and socialising. Home to many independent businesses, it’s a great place to while away a few hours, celebrate a special occasion, or linger a while longer with an overnight stay. Ross Jarvie, Chair, Bawtry Retail Association commented: “From designer boutiques to unique gift shops, award winning salons to jewellery workshops, and a range of bars and eateries that offer everything from a cup of coffee to some of the best international cuisine in the region, Bawtry is a great place to be. “After the trying times of the last couple of years, it’s great to see retailers, residents, our town council and others all coming together and being proud of what we have, and what we can achieve together.” For announcements and more information go to the Visit Bawtry website www.visitbawtry.com or the corresponding Facebook page.

ometimes, the best-kept secrets are best kept that way, limited to those ‘in the know’. As we all know, once that secrets out, things can inevitably change, and not always for the better. Thankfully, the Blind Librarian Cocktail Club in Bawtry has done a fine job at staying under the radar and is, without doubt, one of the town’s hidden gems. Tucked away on Church Walk, this unassuming speakeasy has that underground vibe reminiscent of those once illicit drinking establishments but is definitely a bar for the modern age. But this is not just a late-night drinking den – recent changes mean it’s now open in the daytime too. vibes 6-11pm on Fridays and Saturdays. Two venues, one location - there’s something for everyone. And what makes both venues really stand out is that they are completely plant based – a first for the area. That extends to its cocktails, ingredients and a fully plant-based menu. With specific regard to the Grind House, owner James Herrington (aka Jimmy Cutthroat), who is dairy intolerant, was keen provide a range of milks and beverages that would be suitable for all dietary requirements, which is matched by a variety of plantpowered foods covering breakfast, brunch and lunch. “We have plenty of places to stop for
coffee in Bawtry but nowhere that caters fully for vegans and those with food intolerances“ said James. “Our cocktail bar is already 100 percent plant based, so it seemed like a natural progression to extend this to a coffee shop too.” Browsing the menu at Grind House, you’ll find that all their coffees are made with oat milk as standard, and they also

offer pea milk as an alternative. All the standard varieties - espresso, cappuccino, latte, and Americano - can be enhanced with syrups, protein, and even CBD oil shots. Staff at the Grind House have all undertook an SCA-approved foundation course in Specialist Coffee meaning they really know their stuff and serve the perfect cup of coffee. They use a certified B corp single plantation coffee roast called Under Milk Wood, which is produced by Huddersfield-based Dark Woods Coffee. There’s super food latte drinks flavoured with turmeric, beetroot cacao, and green matcha, as well as teas and soft drinks too. On the food front, for breakfast and brunch, you’ll find everything from a full English to gluten-free oats, avocado on sourdough toast and vegan pancakes, which can be complemented with maple and ‘bacon’, poppy seed and lemon, or blueberry compote and coconut yoghurt. For lunch, there’s a good selection of sandwiches and fries, including ‘loaded’ ones with jalapenos, spring onions, crispy onions, garlic, and a spicy sauce, all prepared on site. There’ll be a specials board too. Having opened two years ago, the Blind Librarian is housed underneath The Gentleman’s Retreat Barbershop
and Idle Hands Tattoo Studio and is accessed through a hidden door behind a bookcase - very 1920s prohibition era. Indeed, many speakeasies of the time were hidden away in the back rooms of barbershops - it seems little has changed almost 100 years later. In-keeping with the speakeasy vibe, it’s a small venue – only allowing 30 seated guests in at once. It’s a dark and intimate space with classy green and gold furniture and accessories and lots of foliage hanging from the walls and ceilings, which changes with the seasons. The well-stocked bar leans towards high-end spirits and bottles you’re unlikely to find anywhere else. There’s over 40 whiskies, a similar number of gins and an already growing rum and tequila selection. Popular cocktails include the Mezcal Paloma - grapefruit juice, Mezcal, agave
syrup, soda water; and the Watermelon Margarita - watermelon, tequila orange curacao, lime, salted rim, but for a real speakeasy vibe, you can’t go wrong with a Whiskey Sour or Martini. And it doesn’t end there. You can enter the Grind House the same way - although the front door will be open too - and you’ll find that same intimate vibe whether you’re stopping by for a coffee or something more substantial. If you have a celebration coming up, the venue is available for private parties where James can curate every little detail, from bespoke cocktail menus to food and decorations. If you’re yet to visit this cool and quaint day-night venue, make sure you add it to your Bawtry bucket list. Now open every day, it’s the most sparkling of gems – just make sure you keep it to yourself.

Over the last two years it has been increasingly more important to be able to adapt to an ever-changing landscape with more people now looking to change their lifestyles and moving home is at the forefront of their thoughts. Whilst technology is important and more and more people now use social media as their “go to” referencing source, which Hunters recognise and utilise, but they strongly believe that there is still no replacement for exceptional customer service. Whilst the likes of Rightmove and Zoopla maintain to be the main advertising outlets for most agents there is no replacement for a local knowledgeable agent who will go out of their way to source that dream home for their client. The team at Bawtry are more than happy to search locally and nationally for that home and are on hand to help you with any part of the home moving process, whether that be selling, buying or renting. Simon, Sacha, Clare and Helen have a wealth of experience and pride themselves on knowing their local market and are readily available to answer all your questions. So if you are thinking of moving, or simply want some advice, then please feel free to call into the office - 6 High Street, Bawtry, DN10 6JE or call 01302 710733 between 8/30am and 6pm Monday to Friday and 10am and 1pm Saturday.

Putting the hands back into physio CHAPMAN PHYSIOTHERAPY TALKS ABOUT THE CHANGES BROUGHT ABOUT BY COVID. lmost two years on from the lockdown, what has happened to our profession? The line 'I've tried physio - they don't do anything' is frustrating and unfair. But alas the gulf between the hands-on assessment and treatment and the telephone advice service has widened exponentially. At Chapman Physiotherapy, we have first-hand experience of delivering face to face, telephone and video assessments. Given the choice, we still recommend face to face. Why? We believe that most people have 'googled' what their condition may be before they present to us or their doctor. Some patients may have even tried some exercises. Whilst these may not be the same as we would prescribe, the biggest complaint we hear is 'I waited months for an appointment and just got a phone call and an exercise sheet'. What happens at Chapman Physio? We WANT to see you. We want to assess you in person, we want to understand how the condition is affecting you and how it started. We want to review
A
your range of movement and we want to clear our clinical tests (tests that point us in the direction of specific injuries). We want you to leave feeling that we have a plan of treatment and know what you can expect and also trust that if you need a scan or orthopaedic consultation, then we will totally recommend that. That doesn't mean that we are just going to offer hands-on treatment. We recognise fully the importance of exercise to promote healthy movement patterns, effectively self-manage and understand the condition and restore strength. And we have our on-site gym to do this. But we also recognise that sometimes, joints just become very 'stiff'. And that they will always take the path of least resistance. So, for example, if you have a chronically stiff hip and we give you exercises to get it moving, there's a chance a lot of that movement will come from the lumbar spine and strain that instead. Because sometimes, manual therapy is needed to just 'get it moving' in the first place. It's only by assessing you face to face and reviewing you
and your movement that we can address this. So as our motto says – 'keepingyoumoving' – we want to do exactly that. Get you moving and keep you moving. If you've not tried physio with us… maybe give it a go in 2022? We are hands-on, proactive, research led physios who still believe in manual therapy. We don't ask you to commit to a course, but we are willing to see you as much as you want whilst you find physio beneficial. We want to help you reach your goals and have a pain-free year. Find us on Facebook, call 01302 321245 or visit us at www.chapmanphysiotherapy.com where you can book online. #keepingyoumoving is our aim.

Fostering curiosity QUEEN ETHELBURGA’S INNNOVATIVE CURRICULUM AIDS THE TRANSITION BETWEEN PRIMARY AND SECONDARY EDUCATION. Year 6 curriculum focused on delivering skills that are important for future success, with no formal SAT testing, fosters curiosity for the important journey into Key Stage 3 and beyond, says Head of King’s Magna Middle School at Queen Ethelburga’s Collegiate (QE), Steven Turner. At QE, their mission is for all members of their community to aspire to the Hill Standard ‘To be the best that I can with the gifts that I have’. Steven Turner, Head of King’s Magna, the middle school of QE’s unique four-

school model, says: “We harness this individuality through an innovative curriculum. This is a curriculum which supports the transition between the Collegiate’s primary education at Chapter House, our Preparatory school, and the demands of GCSEs and beyond in our two senior schools.” In a difference from the traditional school model where children stay in primary education until the end of Year 6, QE students join King’s Magna in Year 6, and stay with them until Year 9. They find many students are ready for a new challenge at the end of Year 5, so they

made it a focus to develop a unique curriculum for this transitional year, with content designed in partnership between secondary school subject specialists and highly experienced primary age teachers. Importantly, they have made a crucial decision not to assess their Year 6 students using SATS testing. Students are instead assessed formally at three points during the year using standardised and moderated “common evaluation tasks” - these are used to track progress and identify what each student can do and what they could do to improve further. This decision allows them to focus on delivering those skills that the students need to be successful in Key Stage 3 and beyond. Their all-encompassing, holistic approach to developing the whole student, which is at the heart of everything they do, creates a supportive, vibrant and caring school environment throughout King’s Magna. They are committed to equipping students with the skills and knowledge they need to move seamlessly to QE College or Faculty at the end of Year 9, growing and maturing into their teenage years with confidence. To find out more about this innovative curriculum visit qe.org for more information, where you can book on their next Open Day on 14 May 2022.

Wear it again IF YOU DON’T LIKE THE IDEA OF YOUR WEDDING DRESS BEING STUCK IN A BOX, UPCYCLING CAN GIVE IT A WHOLE NEW LEASE OF LIFE. MARIA ILIFFE LOOKS AT SENTIMENTAL IDEAS FOR YOU TO CONSIDER. edding dresses remain one of the only garments made with the intention of being worn only once, yet they are always expensive. Showing off your beautiful and pricey gown for just one day and leaving it in box forever more seems like a massive waste, particularly when sustainability and cutting down on waste had become ever more important. It explains why many brides are now looking to ‘upcycle’ their dresses, turning them into something new or into different items for memorable keepsakes. This allows the dress to live on, breathing new life into it and spreading the memory. Not only does this give wedding dresses a new purpose but does so sustainably. Single use fashion items, such as wedding dresses, are some of the biggest contributors to the negative environmental impact caused by the

fashion industry. With people increasingly realising the need for sustainable fashion and environmentally friendly solutions to the problems we’ve caused, upcycling is in! Turning old garments into something new is becoming more popular. Even celebrities are taking notice: Emma Watson was pictured on the green carpet in an
upcycled piece created by designer Harris Reed out of donated wedding dresses from Oxfam. Of course, donating or selling your dress are great options too, but if you’d like to keep the memory and spread the sentiment into different items, we’ve collected ten of the best ways to do so. There are many different reasons why someone might want to upcycle their wedding dress, and there are even more options for how they can do so. Including presents, blankets, keepsakes, accessories and a whole dress transformation, we’ve gathered the easiest and most sentimental ideas for you to consider.

Add a touch of lace
Work of art
To embellish your household décor or add some decoration to items you may have already made, your wedding dress lace is perfect. Cutting around the lace or using lace edges / tuile gives you gorgeous additions to any piece. Alternatively, if you have experience in sewing, the lace can be sewn together or added to a piece of fabric and made into a new item entirely. Headbands and necklaces are very easy to make out of lace, simply fixing lace to a band for a statement head piece or adding a fastening to a section of lace to make a choker. This will match perfectly with the stunning cocktail or evening dress you may have already turned your wedding dress into.
One easy way to create truly beautiful art out of your dress, is by framing a piece of fabric/dress section. Resulting in a very sentimental piece, you can even stitch (or pay for a professional to stitch) your initials and date on the framed dress section. On a grander and more expensive scale, you could frame your whole gown. Turning your entire dress into a bigger art installation would create a statement piece in any house. There are a select few companies specialising in framing your dress, The Beautiful Frame Company for example, where it can be preserved professionally and very impressively, however you could buy a frame and glass, doing so yourself for much cheaper.

Confetti Fabric repurposed With any spare pieces of your dress that are too small to create a new idea, you can turn them into a new length of fabric. Placing all the sections next to one another, with the edges overlapping, you can sew over them to create a patchwork fabric, with all the old sentiment but a new purpose. There are tutorials online to help explain how this works and give examples for inspiration. The beauty of this is how unique the fabric will be; you can arrange the scraps and sew them however you desire and of course they’re taken from your dress, making it completely personal. After, you can make anything from this fabric, perhaps something listed here or for another project you have on the go. Using all the dress, including the waste, means the process is closed loop and completely sustainable/environmentally friendly.
Dreamy duvet Same but different One of the best ways to use the whole dress and create a re-useable piece, would be to turn your dress into another. Seen by many brides over the years, making simple alterations can easily transform the piece into a cocktail dress or evening gown. Dying is the most effective way, getting the correct dyes (preferably sustainable) and adding your dress to the mixture always results in a completely unique and almost unrecognisable piece. However, many wedding dresses are so glamorous that even with dye, they still appear bridal; with these it’s best to shorten the dress (using the spare fabric for one of our other ideas). Additionally, cutting off the sleeves or removing some decoration helps to simplify the dress. Adding a belt and some accessories also allows for a more evening/cocktail look. Keeping the structure and sentiment, you have a whole new piece allowing you to get more wear out of your special dress.
Small and beautiful Depending on your sewing skills, you may want to leave this idea for a business/sewer; but regardless of how you get there, turning your dress into a mini dress/christening gown, is beautiful idea for your children or grandchildren. Many brides have followed this path, creating a smaller version or new design out of their wedding dress material, it makes a very sentimental gift and helps you upcycle your gown. If you feel this would be better made through experts, Little Doves online creates some beautiful pieces, or alternatively Infinity Keepsakes have made gorgeous christening dresses alongside other wedding keepsakes. 32 Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk
Turning your wedding dress into a quilt maybe a bigger job than the rest, but will result in such a stunning and personal bed cover. For a simpler idea, you can create a smaller piece for a child in the family, maybe making a beautiful cot sheet. This is easy as you only need to cut a section, hemming for neatness if you desire. However, to make your own bed cover you might need some extra fabric to attach depending on how much space your dress will cover when cut into sections. If you would rather a professional’s touch, many sellers online offer custom, handmade covers/blankets, LoveMoody or Jemdesign567 on Etsy for example.

Wear it well
Picture this
Creating a pendant requires such a minuscule cutting from your dress that you could still preserve the whole piece and never know you’d taken a section. However, as small as it is, this makes a truly beautiful piece of jewellery out of your dress. Cutting a section of fabric or lace and adding it to a pendant is all it takes. Purchase or use an existing empty pendant with a glass front and chain and use clear adhesive (preferably for fabric), to keep it in place. The same method applies for earrings and cufflinks if you wish to make them to match, preserving your dress forever in gorgeous jewellery. Sellers on Etsy can make these for you if you would prefer; CeciLeibovitz and TreeTownPaper create some stunning pieces.
Covering a photo album is one of the simplest ideas, requiring only glue, scissors and an album. Wedding photos allow the magical memories to live on, capturing you and all your family members at their happiest, the images taken will be cherished forever. So, why not use some spare fabric from your dress to either cover a new album, potentially as a gift, or add sentiment to your current album. As you chose your dress and fabric, of course the piece was beautiful, when adding a section to a book, it in turn will look beautiful, with minimal effort.
Cuddly toys As a wedding dress already holds such sentiment, using sections to make a memory bear or bunny for loved one, makes a very thoughtful gift and allows your dress to live on. If you’re planning on doing this yourself, you can use a small piece of fabric and some lace/elastic to make a mini dress for a teddy. If you’re feeling more adventurous, you can make the teddy out of the dress fabric, giving it a soft or lacy body full of memories. Alternatively, if you would like a more professional gift, maybe for your child or grandchild, some online companies can create beautiful and personal teddies out of your dress, or make a small version of your dress to add to a teddy. HandmadeByHenri or ThreadPaperStudio both sell these beautiful custom pieces on Etsy, providing a completely unique and personalised gift.
Bags of style One simple way to get as much use out of your dress is by using the fabric to make other items. Creating a purse, curtains, pillows, tote bags, presents or other household items can be a very simple and completely sustainable way to give new life to your beautiful dress. Purses and tote bags can be made easily, following online patterns and could make a sentimental matching gifts for your maid of honour or bridesmaids. Pillows and cushions are also just as simple to make, cutting shapes cut of the fabric with the edges stitched, sometimes even glued. As your dress fabric is already gorgeous, using it to make these pieces means they’ll easily look good and bring gorgeous sentiment. The option to embellish is there and patterns/tutorials can be found online for more guidance, alongside examples for inspiration.

elebrity style isn’t limited to pieces that simply look good on camera. Big-names like Natalie Portman, Rihanna, Travon Free, Jaden Smith among others, are examples of celebrities using fashion and their influence as a way to make a political statement. Seen on numerous occasions, celebrities dress to promote the ‘time’s up’ movement, fighting for a society free of gender-based discrimination in the workplace and beyond. Actress Sarah Hyland styled the campaign name as a statement t-shirt at a Los Angeles Women’s March. Later actress Jessica Chastain wore the same piece to attend ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live’. More subtle examples include the many actresses at the 2018 Golden Globes, who wore simple, all black outfits, to call attention to sexual harassment and inequality. A similar example seen styled by many progressive celebrities, Prada’s “We Should All Be Feminists” t-shirt. Designed by the first female creative director at Dior, Maria Grazia Chiuri, created the t-shirt based on the book, written by the Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. Many celebrities have worn this statement top, such as Rihanna and Natalie Portman, for the Women’s Solidarity March in L.A. Dior has made more recent feminist features, with model and actress Cara Delevingne in a statement, custom Maria Grazia look. Her white bib top read “peg the patriarchy”, later explaining the statement’s empowering women and sending a message. Jaden Smith, well-known actor and rapper, prides himself in activism.
