rade I listed stately home Wentworth Woodhouse is called Rotherham’s hidden gem. It has been undergoing a huge regeneration over the last few years. In 2017, its new owners, Wentworth Woodhouse Preservation Trust, started repairs on the badly-leaking roof, which had caused damage to the beautiful historic rooms beneath. Last year, that task was finally completed. Now the Trust has moved onto the next task – bringing a new life to the house and gardens. Wentworth Woodhouse is one of the grandest Georgian houses in England and its 606 ft facade is famously considered to be the longest in England. Wentworth was built for Thomas Wentworth, later Marquess of Rockingham, and comprises the unusual combination of two back-to-back houses, which began with the West Front, built between 1725-1734, followed by the East Front from 1730-1760. The Rockinghams were part of the Whig Dynasties of the 18th century and

G

the house was a centre of political influence. After Thomas’s son Charles, 2nd Marquess of Rockingham, died, the estate passed on to the Earls Fitzwilliam who remained in ownership there until the late 20th century. After the death of the 8th Earl Fitzwilliam in 1948, a big part of the house was vacated. In 1950 it was let to the West Riding County Council who used it as the Lady Mabel College of Physical Education, training female PE teachers until 1986, when the college merged with Sheffield City Polytechnic. The house and its 83 acres were sold to a private buyer in 1989 following shortly again in 1999 to the Newbold family. In March 2017, the house was sold to the Wentworth Woodhouse Preservation Trust for £7million following a five-year campaign by SAVE and the Trust. When the Trust took over, it found the Mansion, Stables, Riding School and Camellia House in a critical state of decay and disrepair. Some areas contained asbestos, drains had collapsed, endemic

dry rot, leaking roofs, rotting timbers, and declining stonework needed urgent attention. There were also over 350 tonnes of rubbish that had to be removed. The most urgent task was protecting the building from further exposure to the elements, hence the immediate roof repairs, which completed in 2020. Now Wentworth Woodhouse Preservation Trust have moved on to the second phase of regeneration, starting with the Camellia House. It was originally used as an orangery with a tearoom back in 1738 to entertain guests of Lady Rockingham, wife of the 1st Marquess. When the 2nd Marquess became a collector of camellias, it was used as the home of the blooms he brought back from China and Japan. The building is still a home for the oldest and rarest camellias in the Western world. The Camellia House, which is grade II listed, is now going to be turned into a daytime café and evening venue and will have its own kitchens. The camellias will have a pride of place and will be carefully protected during building work,

which it is hoped will begin next year. Sarah McLeod,Wentworth Woodhouse Preservation Trust CEO, said: “Thanks to a grant from the National Lottery Heritage Fund we now have trusted and expert consultants onboard for this crucial first stage in our plans for the Camellia House. “We hope to be able to tender for the construction work by the end of this year but first, substantial fundraising will need to be done. This will include a public appeal to raise around £500,000 towards this multi-million-pound scheme.” Donald Insall Associates will be developing the designs for The Camellia House and they will be applying to Rotherham Borough Council for planning permission. They are an awardwinning architectural practice and are known for conservation work at some of Britain’s most significant stately homes. Alongside other consultants appointed to work on the plans, quantity surveyors Rex Procter and Partners, and Project Organiser David Trevis-Smith, of DTS Solutions, they have worked on the two

phases of restoration and emergency work at the mansion. Dorian Proudfoot, Associate Director at Donald Insall Associates, said: “It has been an honour and privilege to work with a highly skilled team of conservation specialists at Wentworth Woodhouse and we are looking forward to working on the Camellia House. Its redevelopment is the next stage in securing a sustainable future for the magnificent stately home.” The Wentworth Woodhouse Preservation Trust’s 20-year masterplan outlines that after The Camellia House is complete, the Riding School is earmarked as a major conference and events space, the South Range of the Stables for retail, events and cafe spaces and the Ostler’s House as overnight guest accommodation. WWPT’s chair Julie Kenny CBE said: “Our Masterplan means we can set about putting right the wrongs of the past years for the future of our local community, and the nation. We will ensure the estate flourishes financially so

that its future is never threatened again.” Wentworth Woodhouse has plans to become a world-class visitor attraction with local heritage and culture exhibitions. The story of the house, told in engaging 21st century formats, will focus on present and future, not only the illustrious past. The history of the house and its occupants, and its rescue by the Trust, will be told. The mansion’s 55-acre private gardens now offer the public a beautiful, relaxing place in which to exercise and unwind. The gardens were the saving grace for Wentworth Woodhouse during the first lockdown. Opening them to paying visitors generated a steady flow of income. Garden visitors can explore wildflower meadows, ancient trees, shaded woodland copses, 18th-century follies and monuments. Ticket prices for the gardens are £6 for adults, £3 for children and under 5s go free. They also offer a family ticket for two adults and two children for £12. Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk 15

The Diary ■ THEATRE ■ MUSIC ■ COMEDY ■ EVENTS ■ EXHIBITIONS ■ FILM ■ FURTHER AFIELD…

What to do after lockdown? As restrictions start to ease, we look at things to do and places to visit, from cinemas to theatres and more. Words: Anna Oxborough

he last year has been hard for every one of us.We have had to adapt to this new way of life. The endless lockdowns, the new ways of working from home, kids being off school, not being able to see any friends or family and limited social contact with anyone. It has been a little hard. However, it seems things are looking up and there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Prime Minister, Boris Johnson has released a roadmap of what will be opening up on no earlier than 17 May and the summer months. These things include restrictions on meeting people

T

16 Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk

outdoors being lifted, however, meeting groups over 30 people will still be illegal. Most businesses will reopen, indoor entertainment and attractions; cinemas, play areas and more. Hospitality sectors like pubs will be invite customers indoors and no substantial meal will be required with drinks, but it has to be table service. Hotels and B&Bs will open up and allowed to go ahead are group sport and exercises classes. Performances will also be allowed to go ahead with indoor events holding up to 1,000 people or half full (whichever is the lower number). Outdoor events will hold up to 4,000 or

half full and outdoor seated venues can hold 10,000 or quarter full. Up to 30 people can now attend weddings, receptions, wakes and funerals. Following on into the summer months, from 21 June there will be no legal limits on social distancing and life events. Also, nightclubs will reopen, and they will be easing restrictions on larger events. We can soon get life back to normal and start to look forward to things again! It seems as though being able to have a meal with your friends, going to a music event, going to see the newly released film in the cinema is nearly in our reach.

Music Live music has been a big miss for many but, fingers crossed, performances should be able to resume inside and out from 17 May onwards. Many venues still seem to be airing on the side of caution with gigs pencilled in for later in the year rather than straight away. As well the return of racing, Doncaster Racecourse are also hosting their popular music nights, which take place straight after the racing has finished. Confirmed so far are Kaiser Chiefs (26 June) Rag ‘n’ Bone Man (17 July) and Jess Glynne (14 August).Yorkshire Wildlife Park’s Safari Nights will also be making a return this summer with live performances from Ronan Keating (21 August) and Katherine Jenkins (28 August). Whether you want to relive your youth, or just love the hits of the eighties, Martin Kemp’s 80s Party at Doncaster Dome (7 August) should be a must-attend event. At the Arena in Sheffield you will be able to catch re-arranged performances from JLS (28-29 October), Steps (2 November) and Gary Barlow (2 December).

Arts & Culture Museums, galleries and exhibition centres will be welcoming visitors once again and will need your support. Yorkshire Wildlife Park remains a hugely popular visitor attraction and will be hosting Sunset Safari nights every Friday and Saturday from 30 July to 28 August, plus Bank Holiday Sunday, 29 August. Sunset Safari is exactly what you would think it would be - an evening stroll through the park, where you can see the amazing animals settle down for the end of the day. See the amazing polar bears take an evening swim in one of their lakes, watch the sun set behind the majestic lions or see the anteaters wake up from their daily slumber as the sun goes down. These evenings really will offer you a unique experience to see the animals in a different light.

Racing Racing is back up and running at Doncaster Racecourse with Derby Raceday planned for 5 June. Alongside all the exciting flat racing on Town Moor, you will be able to watch the world-famous Classic and the first leg of the coveted Triple Crown - the Epsom Derby - LIVE on the big screen! A subsequent race meeting will then take place on 31 July.

In The Heights

Cinema Movie theatres are set to re-open, at the earliest, on 17 May and with many of last year’s blockbuster film releases put on hold, this summer should see a tidal wave of new movies hitting the big screen. Marvel’s first cinematic release for almost two years, Black Widow, should finally get it’s release on 9 July and will be followed by Shang Chi and the Ten Rings (3 September). Disney’s offerings come in the form of Cruella (28 May), a live action prequel to 101 Dalmatians, and Luca (18 June), a Disney-Pixar animated adventure set on the Italian Riviera that sees an unlikely but strong friendship grow between a human being and a sea monster disguised as a human. Action lovers can gorge themselves on the latest instalment in the Fast & Furious franchise - number 9 is set to be released on 9 July - whilst Tom

Cruise returns to the cockpit for the long-awaited sequel to Top Gun Maverick (23 July). If you’re looking for a good family film, Space Jam: A New Legacy (23 July) should tick all the boxes. There’s no Michael Jordan this time but LA Lakers star LeBron James will be joining Bugs Bunny and the Looney Toons for more basketball-fuelled adventures. Finally, musical lovers can marvel at In The Heights (18 June), a feature version of the Broadway musical in which a bodega owner has mixed feelings about closing his store and retiring to the Dominican Republic are inheriting his grandmother’s fortune. The Adventure Cinema will be bringing their outdoor events to the Keepmoat Stadium on 3 and 4 June, showing Dirty Dancing and The Greatest Showman (sing-a-long) respectively.

Theatre

The Four Tops, Martha Reeves,The Jackson 5, Smokey Robinson and many, many more.

Like cinemas, theatres will hope to have audiences back from 17 May. Cast will be kicking things off with Dance Through the Decades (22-23 May). Performed by The Milner Academy of Performing Arts, it’s an evening of music from the 1980s onwards. Following this will be The Magic of Motown (30 June-1 July), an evening of glittering costumes, dazzling dance routines and outstanding musicianship in this breathtaking live concert spectacular. You will be going Loco down in Acapulco as you are taken back down memory lane with all the Motown classics from artists such as, Marvin Gaye, Diana Ross, Stevie Wonder,The Temptations,The Supremes,

Comedy Let’s be honest, we could all do with a laugh after the last 12 months. I’m sure there are many gigs to be confirmed but at the time of writing, Doncaster Dome seems to be the place to be. Tim Vine is slated to appear on 28 May and will be followed by Jimmy Carr (13 August) and Sarah Millican (15 August). Hopefully, there’ll be much more to follow.

INTERVIEW

Live and direct RAG’N’BONE MAN SPEAKS TO EASTSIDE ABOUT HIS NEW ALBUM, THE CHARMS OF NASHVILLE AND A RETURN TO TOURING – WHICH INCLUDES A DATE AT DONCASTER RACECOURSE IN JULY.

ith the return of live music imminent (fingers crossed), scores of artists are busy rescheduling postponed dates, cancelled dates and new dates for later in the year. Rag’N’Bone Man has enjoyed a busy start to the year with the release of his new album. Life By Misdaventure, supported by cracking upbeat single, All You Ever Wanted. He’ll be touring the UK in autumn with a date at Leeds’s O2 Academy pencilled in for 21 October as well as stops at Manchster (29th) and Newcastle (3 November). Jenny Entwistle caught up with the gravelledvoice singer to find out more.

W

The new album is a step apart from “Human” sonically, but it feels like a natural progression – are you excited to finally get the music out there as you’ve been sitting on it for about a year?

Yeah, it sort of feels like I’m starting afresh almost, because it is so different to the last project. I feel it feels good and it does feel like the right time to be releasing it, you know I can’t sit on it forever. The worry was that it’ll just get put off and put off and put off until ‘everything’s back to normal’. But, you know, I think I really needed this, to be honest. You recorded the majority of the album in Nashville. What was it about the city that particularly attracted you?

It wasn’t really the city, it was more of the people, to be honest. It’s hard to explain, Nashville itself and the downtown part of Nashville is like country music Disney. Then when you step outside of that part, then you kind 18 Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk

of start to get to know the other parts and it’s really, it’s really beautiful and it’s… there’s so many great venues and it’s not just country music either, there’s so much more than that. I went over there in the first place just to see what the song writing was like because I’d got to a point in the UK where I think I had maybe about eight songs for the record, but I’d come to a bit of a hole. I didn’t feel very particularly inspired. I was in a bit of a slump, then it was talked about that I would go away. Nashville, I’ve been there before and I kind of knew a few people. I’d spoken to Foy Vance about Natalie Hemby, and it would be amazing if I worked with her, so I did some writing with her. I also wrote with Allen Shamblin and Mike Reid the guys that wrote, “I can’t make you love me” (Bonnie Raitt) which is like, in my top five songs of all time. The fact that they were still working, you know they’re both in their 70s, and were like, “we really want to work with you’ and were gassed to work with me and I thought, ‘…these guys want to work with me...They’re like heroes’. So we kind of wrote the rest of the record and decided we’d record it out there as well, because the original plan was to write it and then just come back here and produce it. But I met Mike Elizondo and saw his studio and was like “we have to do it here. There’s no other options.” The eight tracks that you had before you went out there, did they have the Americana vein within them already?

Yeah, I had written all of these songs pretty much exclusively on just acoustic guitar and piano. The plan was to just

live with the songs in just that space and not have anything get in the way of it. We went over to Nashville this time last year. We had three weeks set out to record the album then they said, ‘You’ve got to quarantine for two weeks when you get there.’ So, it was me, my keys player and my bass player who I brought out to play on the album, and we had to stay in this house, which was next door to the studio. But we weren’t allowed in the studio. We just had to spend two weeks by ourselves in the house, which was so frustrating! It forced us to make the decision to just record the album as if it were live and put everyone in place. We just played it until we got it right and it was the best decision, even though we were forced to do it. How much are you looking forward to just gearing up and actually playing these songs?

I’m ready. I’m so bad at being at home for long periods of time. Like my Missus used to just tell me to go out when I got back from tour because she sort of had enough for me because I just sort of walked around the house aimlessly. I really didn’t know what to do. It has been cool, because I’ve got to spend time with my family but at the same time it feels like a limb has been cut off because of that life that has been taken away. It feels positive at the moment though, it feels like we’re on the brink of it, on the horizon of like, it’s the... it’s right in front of us and we’re so ready. What’s the song that you’re most looking forward to people hearing?

I wrote this song called “Alone.” It sort

019 ESide May21 16/04/2021 09:38 Page 1

INTERVIEW

of feels a bit 90s, in a way I feel, as listened to a lot of Radiohead at the time, and Oasis and stuff like that. The sonic of it is very much like that, that era of music, but then the subject is really different. It was a conversation I’d have with someone years ago, about the possibility of becoming a parent, and how not everybody wants that. And it’s okay to not want that. As men we don’t really get stick from our families about ‘Oh, when you’re going to have to settle down’ and ‘When are you going to find someone’ or ‘When you’re going to make me a grandparent?’ But women do really get that and it made me think… that must be horrible, being constantly pressured. So that’s what the songs about, the pressure from people to have a family when maybe that’s not what they want. It’s an interesting subject to talk about, it’s kind of sad and it’s kind of a really archaic way of looking at things. How do you think your outlook has changed towards your music and your style since becoming a father?

I think you just become less selfish as a person. It definitely broadens your thought process, but it also makes me a lot more worried about the future so I’ve talked a lot about that on the album. It’s definitely made me a lot more open and a lot more honest. I feel like this record is the most honest I’ve ever been on anything. It’s also made me not so scared of being honest as well. I don’t feel like I should keep that to myself because what will people think of me? I don’t really care now, because what I want from my son is freedom, freedom of expression and freedom of thought and freedom to love whoever they want. Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk 19

Are you looking for a 100% Non-Surgical Aesthetic Treatment? Then look no further than Plasma Blast Skin Tightening.

Clare Carroll - Plasmablast Skin Tightening Clare has worked in the beauty industry for 25 years and always strives to be the best at what she does and do the best she can for her clients. Over the years she has studied thousands of faces whilst working in the beauty industry, doing facials, microneedling, microdermabrasion, micropigmentation, brows, lashes etc. As Clare herself grew older, gravity started to inevitably take its course and wrinkles started appearing, the skin started to sag, she had to stretch her skin to the sides to apply eyeshadow etc. Clare decided she needed to do more for her skin but did not want to go down the fake route of Botox and Fillers. It was at this time in her life that clare saw a course for skin tightening and asked the training school if it worked from their experience, they said it did and that she could try it

before she spent thousands on the training. Six weeks later and without realising, she could all of a sudden apply eyeshadow without stretching the skin. That day she booked the course and has been practicing Plasmablast Skin tightening ever since. With Plasmablast / Fibroblast being very new to the industry only three years ago her clients were at first very wary. But after seeing fantastic results for themselves, they all rebooked for further treatments. Clare practiced on herself and a few of her friends and family so that she could monitor the results of her own experiments and in this she found that she didn’t need to do just the wrinkles but that she could shorten loose skin and wrinkles wherever they may be. During your consultation or appointment with Clare she will take photographs of you and talk through with you your problem areas. She will then feel your skin and talk you through what can be done to achieve a smoother, fresher and healthier complexion. Clare can be contacted on: 07976 971501

AWARD WINNING RESTAURANT Winners of the 2019 Eastside Restaurant Awards

“I’m Chintana, most people know me as Ton. I grew up in a village not far from the city of Ratchuburi in Thailand. I started cooking at a young age and used to cook for all my family. Mai Dang was my first restaurant I opened when I was 18 years old. Six Years later, I met my husband and we decided to start a family in Doncaster. Then this gave me the opportunity to open the first Thai Restaurant in Doncaster, The Bangkok Thai Restaurant. Ten years of running a successful business, we wanted to expand and we decided to open the Bangkok Royal Elephant. Now we’re starting a new chapter by opening the only Thai Restaurant in Doncaster, Thai At The Sal.”

DRINKS

Spring selection IN THE FIRST OF A NEW MONTHLY COLUMN, JASON ADLAM, OF J P ADLAM GIN, OFFERS UP SOME TASTY COCKTAIL RECIPES, PERFECT FOR WARMER MONTHS AHEAD. ow that spring is nearly upon us and we look forward to the long hot English Summer, why not try a few cocktails with J P Adlam No 8 Gin, our award-winning London Dry gin. Handcrafted in Yorkshire for a pure and individual taste offering a unique quality. Here is our selection of the taste of spring and summer.

N

The J P Adlam Gin & Tonic Our J P Adlam No 8 Gin has been created to provide a totally different taste profile with different tonics. With a Mediterranean Tonic the orange and lemon botanicals will come bouncing out, great over ice with a slice of orange or lemon. With Elderflower Tonic the lavender botanicals will come flowing out of the gin which will go well over ice with a handful of raspberries. Don’t forget the traditional Indian Tonic, this will bring forth the cubeb peppers, grains of paradise and star anise. Again, enjoy over ice with a garnish of your taking.

The Bramble The Negroni A popular Italian cocktail dating back approximately 100 years. Our version is made of one part J P Adlam No 8 Gin (of course), one part vermouth rosso (which simply means red and sweet), and one part Campari, garnished with an orange peel. In Italy it is considered an aperitif (meaning it should be taken before a meal to stimulate the appetite). A traditionally made Negroni is stirred, not shaken (Mr. Bond), and built over ice in an old-fashioned or rocks glass. So, let’s raise a drink to General Pascal Olivier de Negroni, who is largely regarded as being its creator.

The Elderflower Collins A truly fresh and fruity springtime twist on a Tom Collins (which is made from J P Adlam No 8 Gin, lemon juice and carbonated water). The twist comes from swapping the carbonated water for elderflower cordial which you can buy from most supermarkets now or online. Shake the double J P Adlam Gin with the lemon juice (a single shot), sugar syrup (a little drop or two) and a good dash of elderflower cordial. Pour over ice in a tall glass and fill to the top with soda water. Decorate with your favourite herb and the lovely warm evenings will never be the same again.

By comparison to the Negroni, the bramble is a little over 40 years old, created in the 1980s by Dick Bradsell and is without doubt the “springtime cocktail” to enjoy in your garden as you chat to friends. Fill a glass with crushed ice. Build a double J P Adlam Gin, a shot of lemon juice and half a shot of simple sugar syrup over the top. Stir and add a shot of Crème de Mure (blackberry liqueur). Garnish with two blackberries and a lemon slice. The bramble is meant to represent a truly British cocktail, sweet and tasty.

Here’s to a fabulous spring and a long hot summer from all at J P Adlam Gin. Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk 35

It’s a saying that has perhaps never been more apt, as we spent much of our 2020 confined to our homes (and gardens) as a result of the ongoing pandemic. If your home is indeed your castle, you’ll want it to be the best it can be. This is where pacepad can help. When your designs extend much further than a lick of paint, new kitchen or landscaped garden, pacepad‘s two divisions - Design & Build and Construction - are perfectly placed to make your dream home a reality. Let’s start big. If you have a grand idea to build a home from the ground up pacepad can do the whole job from start to finish. They can procure the right plot of land, work with you to design and produce architectural drawings and then build the property for you. It’s all part of their ‘design-develop-deliver’ ethos. Technician Paul Hind, who has over 35 years’ experience in the industry, recently joined the Design & Build team, whilst Steve Brown heads up the construction team and is further supported by Ben Duckenfield and Henry Powell-Platts. pacepad also work with Masterfit, M&A Garretty, AMB Stainless and SC&H Electrical as well as reliable teams of subcontractors. “It’s all about creating a lifestyle,” said managing director Mark Platts. “We at pacepad have a design vision that celebrates the character in architecture. “Our nature is not just to build, it is a journey and we want you with us. When you choose to accompany our team, we have skilled design and craftsmanship that means that we can shape your architecture for you. We take what is desired by the client and apply our innovative design strategies to create optimum spaces, aiming

for vibrant, healthy and show-stopping developments.” pacepad are currently partnered with OPM building new properties at Troway (STP), where they are converting an old pub into two luxury homes and adding a further barn conversion-style property, and at Sandygate Road, where they are in negotiations for a housing scheme (STP). These will be exciting, cutting edge residential schemes. If your plans aren’t quite as grand as a complete house build, pacepad also undertake extensions and renovations as well as commercial projects. They have recently been working with Paul Brady, Axis Architecture, Cero Architecture, Stainton Planning Consultants and Hector & Cedric on various innovative and exciting projects alongside Mayfair Aluminium and their trusted subcontracting teams. “Having over three decades of experience we implement strong design strategies and specialise in premium builds and conversions across Sheffield and Derbyshire,” added Mark. “Our cool, contemporary structures are some of the most successful spaces in Sheffield. “We are able to offer the full package, from conception to completion, including architectural drawings. If you have plot of land or large garden that you think you can redevelop then we are ideal partners to develop or purchase. Feel free to drop into the office once restrictions allow!” Once your build is complete, pacepad can help you furnish it too with interior design ideas and classic furniture items from the likes of Eames, Arne Jacobsen and Ludwig Van der Rohe. If you have grand designs on building your own home, or just want to enhance the space you’ve got, pacepad are ready to design-develop-deliver for you.

The Volkswagen Touareg R is the first fully-fledged production R model to be launched with an electrified powertrain. Capable of both impressive performance as well as ultra-low emissions, the Touareg R features a petrol plugin hybrid system producing 462PS and 700Nm of torque. This impressive output makes the Touareg R the most powerful production Volkswagen to date. At the heart of the Touareg R is a sophisticated 3.0-litre V6 TSI eHybrid plug-in powertrain. Not only is it powerful, but it is also smooth and refined and, moreover, is frugal enough to make the R the most running-cost-friendly model in the Touareg range, with fuel economy and CO2 emissions of 94.2 mpg and 67g/km (combined cycle) respectively. A 28-mile electric-only range accessible in the Touareg R’s EMODE adds to the model’s low-CO2 credentials, with the 14.3 kWh (net) battery reducing running costs for this versatile performance SUV. Prices start at £71,995.

come rain or shine HIS FACEBOOK FORECASTS ATTRACT THOUSANDS OF FOLLOWERS AND HAVE BECOME A TRUSTED SOURCE OF LOCAL WEATHER INFORMATION. BUT WHO IS THE MAN BEHIND STEEL CITY SKIES? t’s become the trusted source for accurate local weather. Come rain or shine, thousands of Sheffielders are choosing Steel City Skies over the likes of the BBC, Met Office and local media for their forecasts. But who is the man behind the hugely popular weather forecasting page? That man is Stephen Jenkins and he’s not a meteorologist but a teaching assistant at a primary school in the north of the city and also recently qualified as a Forest School practitioner. Weather is his hobby, his passion and Steel City Skies is a service he is happy to continue to provide.

I

You’ll find him on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube delivering daily and weekly forecasts for Sheffield which are, more often than not, right on the money. Stephen, who also lives in north Sheffield, has been running the page for three years after friends and colleagues at work often asked him what the weather was going to be like for the weekend or the holidays. The rest, they say, is history. We caught up with the weather enthusiast to find out more and, more importantly, to ask what kind of weather we can expect this summer. Clue: you should be ok to organise that garden party.

INTERVIEW

Tell us about Steel City Skies.

Steel City Skies is a weather forecasting page specialising in accurate forecasts local to Sheffield. Every morning there’s a forecast for the day, with weekend outlooks on Thursday evenings and week-ahead forecasts published on Sundays. When inclement or interesting weather is in the offing, extra posts are published. Do you post daily?

Yes! I write up a daily forecast every morning that publishes between 6 and 6.30am.The forecasts follow a text and accompanying graphic format with a photo background. On occasion I credit and share photos that my followers have uploaded to the page - it helps keep a local connection to the page and develops a sense of community. I’m pleased to say those that followed the page from the very beginning are still there! What qualifies you to forecast the weather?

Almost all of the hobbies I’ve had are ones I dip in and out of - they never truly hold my attention. Weather is the

one exception and it has been a constant fascination for me. Though I have no formal meteorological qualifications, I take forecasting very seriously and use high-resolution data from weather models to support the forecasts that I write for Sheffield. I’ve also been a member of online weather communities for over ten years and learnt from some very knowledgeable members. How would you describe Sheffield’s climate?

Varied would be the best word! We do benefit from the shelter of the Peak District and the southern Pennines so we are not as rainy as Manchester for instance. I’d like to think we have a very balanced climate here, positioned where we are in the UK. We get our fair share of snow in winter but we also tap nicely into summer heat when it comes as well. I’m thankful that we have such amazing scenery on our doorstep to experience it all, too. Have you ever got it drastically wrong?!

Now, drastically is a strong word! The

trickiest element when forecasting for Sheffield is definitely snow. Given the varied topography of the city it is a real challenge to be accurate when forecasting how much snow is going to fall. It is not an exaggeration to say that you can have the city centre with a bit of slush and a more elevated suburb of Sheffield just a mile or two away buried in deep snow! As such, I have learnt to be as specific as possible when forecasting snow. I’ve learnt that the hard way! Do you get recommendations for forecasts?

Occasionally someone will get in touch and ask for a more specific forecast, such as a holiday forecast or for a significant event. The page seems to be recommended regularly as almost all of the page growth is due to likes, comments and especially shares of my page which is really heartening - I’m grateful for every single engagement. Do you have any other hobbies?

Alongside my forecasting, I like to storm chase in the summer. That involves

travelling to a location where particularly severe storms are forecast and positioning carefully to get the best footage and photos of the storm structure without getting clobbered by it. It’s not quite as lairy as the chasing in America but it’s enough to get my adrenaline going. I also like to walk in the Peak District and photograph wildlife and landscapes. To stay fit and active I play five-a-side football every week. What are your favourite parts of the city?

I love socialising with friends in the city centre - I can’t wait until we can all mix safely again and breathe life back into the city. Otherwise, I’d have to say the nearby Peak District - I know I’m straying a little outside of Sheffield strictly speaking, but I know it’s a big draw for those who end up moving to Sheffield and if I ever leave the city it’ll be one of the biggest things I’ll miss. Any favourite places outside of Sheffield?

I studied up in Scarborough so that’s

always the first place that springs to mind. It’s so different to Sheffield of course with its gorgeous coastline so it was a really unique experience to live there for four years. I’m hoping to go back there in the near future and visit friends. Will you be going on holiday this summer?

I’m not planning anything spectacular, thankfully I got my travelling in before the pandemic began. My brother is working up in the Lake District - a stunning part of the world - so I’ll visit him when I can but otherwise it’ll be smaller trips to some of the more local beauty spots. That’s just fine though, I think our economy could do with more staycations this year. Most importantly, what’s the summer going to be like?

Given the weather’s propensity for heat these days I would expect another above-average summer in terms of temperature. I know I’m not exactly sticking my neck out but I think overall it’ll be a pretty mixed summer with

Thunderstorm over the Peak District

unsettled patterns alternating with spells of potentially significant heat. The way we’ll remember our summer is if any such pattern sticks for a lengthy period of time, as has been the case in recent years (remember the winter Beast from the East?). If a pattern does stick it’ll prove difficult to shift which is when we experience something more notable, whether it be significant rain, storms or heat. How long will Steel City Skies keep running?

As long as I have a passion for the weather and live in Sheffield there’s no reason for me not to stop as I still really enjoy it. I’ve built up a loyal following who appreciate the straight-talking forecasts, humour and local flavour. I’d like to thank all of those who like and share the page as they keep me going even when the weather tests my patience! You can follow Steel City Skies on Stephen’s blog - https://steelcityskies.home.blog – or on social media channels Facebook,Twitter andYouTube.
