Star quality HE HAS PLENTY OF GREATEST HITS TO CHOOSE FROM AND ARRIVES IN YORK THIS MONTH. MARIA ILIFFE SPOKE TO MARTI PELLOW. enowned musician, Broadway star and previous member of Wet Wet Wet, Marti Pellow is celebrating his musical career with the latest ‘Greatest Hit Tour’. Starting in Dublin and heading to York’s Barbican theatre, Marti will make is way around England and Scotland this spring. Excited to bring his fans the very best of his musical career, expect Marti’s hit songs alongside a few from his latest Stargazer album – “the clue’s in the title” said Marti in the following interview.

R

12 Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk

Speaking with Pellow, he said: “[The tour] is a celebration of the songs people are familiar with… I feel lucky to be able to deliver what people love.” From singing popular chart hits with Wet Wet Wet from the young age of 17, Marti is known for favourites such as, Sweet Little Mystery, Love Is All Around and Angel Eyes. Proudly one of the biggest selling artists of the nineties, Pellow sung knowing his was going to be a superstar. When his father, a builder, told him to get a

proper job, he said it was pointless, because he was destined to be a huge pop star. There was simply no doubt in his mind, he says. And so it turned out. With the band going from success to success, the fame kept them rolling full steam ahead until their first separation in 1997 and then again in 2017. Battling with an alcohol and heroin addiction, the Scottish singer left the band and life behind in 1999 and now he sings with sobriety and pride.

013 ESide May22 19/04/2022 14:41 Page 1

He began his career as a solo artist with Chr is Difffford of Squeeze. The two met while th hey were patients in The Pr iory in March 1999. Difford subsequently became Pellow’s lyr icist and unofffiicial helper. Marti explains: “Perfor ming concerts, acting and my own songwr iting - as an artist I feel a lot more settled in this world.” Marti has always had a lust for music, as he explains: “I used to love listening to my mum and dad’s record collection… I would see my favour ite bands live and my stars singing on TV and th hought ‘I want to do that’, and realised at a very young age that I wanted to sing.” Lockdown presented Pellow with the perfect opportunity to wr ite his latest album, Stargazer. He said: “I ffiinally got to wr ite the songs that let me pay homage to all my heroes. I can’t wait to sing those songs live for the ffiirst time.” Singing credit to stars such as Harry Nilsson, John Lennon, Anthony Newley and David Bowie, iin n a series of selfpenned songs, his impression of the soul and funk-infused mid-70s Bowie is rather wonderful and Pellow says he had a great time mak kiing the album. Inspiirring a different tone, he wrote the album on his guitar, iin nstead of his usual piano, bringing a completely difffferent feel, he said: “It was surprisingly one of my most successful albums, it was very well received.” Lockdown was a huge infflluence on Pellow’s new tour for numerous reasons. Singing online for fans, Marti enjoyed his musical sessions and was inspired to take them further. “I was inundated by beautiful messages from fans asking me to organise a tour once we come out of these ter r ible times. Twelve million people tuned in for the sessions and each one of you have inspired me to make this tour happen.” Falling in love again with the music of his past, Marti wanted to put togeth her a show that celebrated all the wonderful music throughout his career. Pellow’s career spans many roles and his work with h musicals started in 2008, following his appearance in Sir Tim Riice’s concert revival of his musical R

Chess, playiing the “Arbiter”. Perfor ming in numerous West End and Broadway shows, Marti has made a proud, worldwide name for himself in the musical industry. With his love for shows, Marti, along with his fr iends, are cur rently wr iting a musical; he shared: “It’s based on my home country and based on trraditional Scottish folk history, it’s mystical like Riings.” Lord of The R Now in the pipeline and expected to be tour ing the UK in many years to come, Pellow is excited about this new venture and hopes fans and enthusiasts alike, will be too. However, his next move is expected much sooner, already announced, advertised and eagerly

anticipated: the Pellow Talk Tour. He explains: “Think of it as coming back to my place for a night of stor ies and songs. Pellow Talk is a chance to lear n all about me, not just as a singer and songwr iter, but as a boy and a man.” Marti is excited to speak with h his fans “with hout a mask”, so they can get to know the real Martii Pellow and everything in his making. With many achievements in his past and many more to come, Pellow’s next perfor mance: The Greatest Hits Tour is commencing this month and he hope’s you’ll be there too. A centre centre ffor or future future focussed focussed learning learning DESPITE ONLY BEING ESTABLISHED IN AUGUST 2019, DONCASTER'S HARRISON COLLEGE HAS MADE HUGE STRIDES IN A SHORT SPACE OF TIME. ar r ison College is the only provider of education for post16s with special needs where the focus is on inter nships, employment and work skills. The college was announced as the Yorkshire and Humber reg ional winner in the Br itish Chamber of Commerce 2021 annual awards. This followed the specialist business and enter pr ise college’s selection as winner of the Doncaster Chamber of Commerce Business Start Up of the Year Award, sponsored by Orb Recruitment. Pr incipal Gemma Peebles, who established the college just over twoand-a-half years ago, said of th he double award: “The whole team at Har r ison College is delighted to have been recognised in this way. Our studentcentred approach provides the best opportunities for young people who may be disenfranchised from traditional education or whose needs simply are not being met elsewhere. “Our ethos is that a young person’s lear ning need or disability shouldn’t hold them back. Our dedicated team recognise these students have a lot to offer and we, together with supportive local employers, can help them pursue their dreams and succeed as young adults. For many of our students, this is the ffiirst time they have been happy in a

Ever ones to champion local success stor ies, Eastside spoke to business development director, Mike Peebles, to ffiind out more. Mike has spent 20 years working in the commercial sector of sport and retail, building a valuable network of businesses that he uses to he students in sourcing support th inter nships. Tell us about Harrison College?

Based in Doncaster, we are a non-proffiit, specialist business and enter pr ise post-16 college providing a challeng ing, futurefocussed provision for young adults with high functioning autism and Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs. We pr ide ourselves in providing a provision where lear ners can thr ive, placing no limits on what can be heir backg round or achieved, no matter th starting point, leading to a secure and prosperous future. We opened to students in September 2020 and have already received recognition from the National Association for Special Educational Needs for our provision, and we contiinually str ive to offer more

opportunities for our students. As a key part to our students’ study prog ramme, we offer supported inter nships/long ter m work placements as the main aim of Har r ison College is to prepare young people for th he world of work. Each student will engage with a supported inter nship that is linked to their own long-ter m targets and career aims. Once the placement is ag reed, we ensure that regular visits take place so that we can assess prog ress against key employability skills. We have an work where your established support nettw business associates or the assigned inter nship mentor can access valuable support and advice from our own college advisors as well as other business advisors working with our students.

Presently, fewer than one in four young people with high functioning autism access education after GCSE level and only 16 per cent are in full-tiime employment. It has to be seen to be believed. Professional and pur poseful, while being calm and respectful to students and staff requirements. Can anyone apply, criteria permitting?

We have a catchment area of Doncaster, Bansley, Shefffiield, Rotherham and Scunthor pe. How does the curriculum work?

The intent of our cur r iculum is to develop young people who are employable and for all of our students to secure the skills and attrr ibutes to enter employment at the end of their study programme. We encourage all lear ners to be the best they can be. We provide a safe, car ing and motiivatiing lear ning environment where high quality lear ning and teaching exper iences ensure a culture of success and achievement. They have also given me time to decide what I want to do in the longterm future. My internship with a local business was arranged and I was supported with that – I have now been offered an apprenticeship. I would recommend Harrison College to anyone who is struggling to work out what to do with their future.” Malachi Brown, 18, came because he wasn’t achieving the grades he needed. “This college has helped me work on my grades and get into the world of work. I want to do audio engineering. It was hard at first coming here because I was very shy, but the teachers and the students have helped me learn a lot more than I thought I would do; they’ve encouraged me and given me confidence.”

Callum Hall, 16, was attending a school in Nottingham, 90 minutes from his home in Doncaster, until he was able to join Harrison College. “It’s good for me here because there were a lot of behavioural issues among pupils at my old school, and I can do more subjects here. I love IT hardware and that’s what I want to focus on.” Rhianna Jackson, 19, has an internship with the RSPCA two days per week and is hoping to secure an apprenticeship. She said: “I came here for help to gain confidence and grow my skills. I can definitely see a change in myself. I’m able to communicate with people more and my confidence level has definitely increased. Making friends used to be a problem for me, but the college is teaching me the communication skills to help with that and I have lots of friends here.” Emma Smith, 17, added: “I love it. It’s a different environment. Everyone is nice and it’s about growing your personality. Everyone knows what they are doing and it’s very calm. I have been in toxic places, I was bullied in school; we’ve all got the same issues here and that’s why we understand each other. Declutter those clothes SAY GOODBYE TO YOUR BURSTING, WINTER WARDROBE AND WELCOME THE SUN WITH YOUR FAVOURITE CLOTHING HUNG WITH PRIDE. BY MARIA ILIFFE. ith the start of spr ing, why not be trrue to the season and do some spr ing cleaning/sorting of your own. Now looking at your more summery cloth hes with longing, it can be extremely beneffiicial to have a sort out of your gar ments, sectioning for seasons. Having less clothing in your wardrobe/on display will save time when you’re getting dressed, help you wear items forgotten about, save money on buying more clothes when you realise you have enough to re-style… the list goes on.

W

The ffiirst step in declutter ing your wardrobe: put all your clothes in one pile; seeing everything in front of you will put your shopping in perspective, also this will force you to look at every item. This step is great if yo ou have a day alone to deal with the mass, however if not, sorting for short per iods here and there can stiill achieved the desired organisatiion.

1

Sectioning your clothes into: workout, comfy, going out, summer, winter, holiday, sleeping etc will help you see which areas need the most downsizing. However, if over

2

consumption is your issue, it may be more beneffiicial to organise them into piles of: never wor n, not been wor n for year, hope to wear again someday, uncomfortable, ill-ffiitting. These categor ies help br ing reason when wanting to keep everyth hing ‘just in case’. Now look at every item, giving each a moment of questiioning: Do I love th his? Do I wear this? Do I need this? If you answer ‘no’ for any, then it’s tiime to let go of your item. Thanking th he item for its use, as advised by famous expert Mar ie Kondo, helps us to feel less attached to items we no longer need, thanking th hem for th heir service and respectfully re-homing th hem.

3

Once you’ve looked at every item and the cloth hes are in reduced sections, look back to your wardrobe space. Planning where each section will go can improve how easy it is to get dressed or ffiind clothes and outfffiits; pr ior itising yo ou favour ite/every day or work cloth hes is important for easy access. Using organisers for sections with different categor ies will furth her help with order, e.g. using shoe separators/a rack, instead of piling th hem on a shelf or draw dividers for different typ pes of socks etc. Stor ing away big winter coats and clothing will give more space and practicality to your spr ing/summer wardrobe.

4

Disposing of your cloth hes is one of th he most important steps in declutter ing, this is where you’re given a chance to re-home your beloved gar ments. If any are of value it’s smart to list th hem on second-hand websites like eBay, Depop or Vinted and if not then donating them to char ity helps others ffiind new outffiits and gives back to your local community. Equally if you’re crafty you could cut or sew to transfor m your old, r ipped or ill-ffiitting gar ments into wearable ones.

TRAVEL

Travelling solo at the Shangri-La Paris LAURA BARTLETT RECENTLY VISITED THE PRESTIGIOUS FRENCH LOCATION ON VACATION AND IT WAS EVERYTHING THAT SHE EXPECTED AND MORE… y definition, the term ShangriLa is described as ‘an imaginary, beautiful place, often far away, where everything is pleasant and you can get anything you want’. And they’re completely right, only it’s not far away, and it’s anything but imaginary. The Shangri-La group operates fivestar luxury hotels in 22 countries across Asia Pacific, North America, the Middle East, and Europe. Their métier is world class service and tranquil surroundings, as well as unrivaled hospitality and dining, exquisite architecture and some of the most exclusive addresses in the world. And nothing says exclusive real estate quite like Paris. At 10 Av. d’Iéna, in Paris’ luxurious 16th Arrondissement, you’ll find the Shangri-La Paris - a palace quite literally fit for royalty, notably once the home of Prince Roland of the Bonaparte family. Yes, that Bonaparte family. Shangri-La’s Parisien paradise was the first of the group to open in Europe, and during the meticulous and graceful renovations (which took four years - the same amount of time it took to build back in 1896), managed to maintain the important and beautiful French heritage of the place. The marble lobby is among the grandest entryways we’ve ever seen, giving Versailles itself a run for its money. Focus shifts towards the back of the building, where the walls seem to open out into a series of magnificent gardens, full length windows, romantic balconies and sprawling panoramic terraces. But why? Because the hotel has one of the most enviable views in the world, of course. The Eiffel Tower, in all its glory, sits within reaching distance across the River Seine, shadowing the hotel in its glimmering grandeur. The best bit is that you can see this view from most of the rooms here (around six in ten) - an accolade not afforded by many other Paris lodgings. When the hotel was renovated by

none other than Pierre Yves-Rochon (of Four Seasons and Savoy fame), they chose to stick with a classic French opulence with luxury minimalism, going against the grain of the Hong Kong based group’s typical cache. But where the design says French elegance, the food says Chinese culinary excellence. Chef Christophe Moret resides over La Bauhinia, the hotel’s flagship restaurant where French and Southeast Asian

contemporary cuisine meets - if you’re looking for a recommendation, try the lobster salad. Shang Palace is the second restaurant, where culinary master Samuel Lee Sum has dedicated his menu to the very best in Cantonese cooking. So good in fact that in 2012 it became the only Chinese restaurant in France to hold a Michelin star. As expected from ShangriLa, the attention to detail here extends itself far beyond comprehension, leaving every inch of you completely satisfied.

Centrally located in the 16th arrondissement, minutes from the Champs-Elysées, the Shangri-La Paris blends European grandeur with traditional Asian hospitality. To find out more, visit www.shangri-la.com/ paris/shangrila

PROPERTY

What is conveyancing? BUYING YOUR FIRST PROPERTY CAN BE AN OVERWHELMING EXPERIENCE WITHOUT THE HELP OF AN EXPERIENCED PROPERTY LAWYER TO GUIDE YOU THROUGH THE CONVEYANCING PROCESS – BUT WHAT EXACTLY IS CONVEYANCING? onveyancing is the legal trransfer of a property from one owner to another. The process involves a conveyaancing solicitor or licensed conveyancer who acts on behalf of th he buyer to ensure th heir client receives the title deeds to the property and the land it sits on. Conveyaancing encapsulates the entirety of the legal and administrrative work required to ensure a house purchase is valid under law.

C

other party. This can potentially increase the r isk of gazumping if you are part of a lengthy moving chain. • Upon the exchange of contrracts the buyer and seller are both legally committed to the purchase and th he agreed ter ms of th he sale. If you decide to pull out of th he agreement at this stage you may automatically lose the deposit you paid upon exchange.

Standard conveyancing practice

What w wiill your conveyancer do for you?

Sooner or later you will hear your conveyancer or mortgage lender refer r ing to “exchange of contrracts”. The exchange of signed contracts between the buyer and the seller – car r ied our via each party’s conveyancer – is what legally commits both parties to the sale of th he property. • A house purchase is not legally binding until contracts are exchanged between the buyer and the seller – this gives freedom to both parties pr ior to the exchange of contrracts. A deposit is he exchange of contracts. required at th • In th he phase pr ior to exchanging contracts either party can cancel the transaction, with no obligatiions to the

Strr ictly speaking it is possible to deal with your own conveyaancing. However, it is a detailed and somewhat complicated legal process, and it is recommended that you always use a qualiffiied and exper ienced property solicitor. Your conveyancer will: • Liaise with the seller’s solicitor to receive a contract pack • Request and obtain a copy of your mortgage offer • Car ry out the necessary local author ity searches in relation to the property • Analyse the results of the local author ity searches • Ar range potential completiion dates with both partiies

48 Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk

• Swap signed contracts with the seller’s own conveyaancer • Transfer the deposit to the seller’s conveyaancer • Prepare the completion statement and transfer deeds for you to complete • Transfer the signed transfer deeds to the seller’s conveyancer • Request payment of the mortgage advance from your lender • Transfer the balance of the purchase pr ice (less the deposit already paid) to the seller’s conveyancer • Submit a tax retur n and pay the required Stamp Duty Land Tax to HM Revenue & Customs • Forward documentation regarding the transfer of ownership to the Land Registrry • Forward the title deeds to yo our mortgage lender While your conveyancer will do the major ity of th he legwork, you will also have responsibilities dur ing the conveyancing process. PROPERTY P ROPERTY

Conveyancing checklist for buyers he legal process of buying a property doesn’t have to be complicated - just follow these simple steps! Even though you’re choosing a conveyancing solicitor to take care of buying your property, you’ll still want to be an active part of the process. That way you’ll know exactly where you stand, how long things are taking and what tasks are next on the list. To make sure nothing gets forgotten, read through our ‘buying a house checklist’ below.

T

1. Check the reviews when choosing a conveyancer Choosing a solicitor can feel a little overwhelming - especially if you’re a first time buyer who has never had to do it before. Make sure you take the time to compare the costs, whether they include things like ‘disbursements’ and extras, and always look at reviews. You look at them for everything else, so it’s especially important to take the time when it comes to something as important as buying a property. 2. Always read the small print Before entering into an agreement with a property lawyer, always read the contract fully and ask the conveyancer to clarify any terms you don’t understand. They are working on your behalf and should be happy to help explain any complex terminology.

them to check the legal implications and make sure the deal is in your best interest. It also means that conditions the seller agreed to won’t be forgotten along the way. 6. Be aware of the property searches Part of your conveyancing solicitor’s job involves organising searches with the Land Registry. These searches assess the local area, history of the property and a variety of other factors. 7. Restrictions and contracts that may affe ect the property Make sure your conveyancer gives you copies of any restrictions or contracts that affect the property on the land. Buying with the aim to extend the kitchen and then realising you can’t may find you stuck with a property that doesn’t fit your future needs. Similarly, if you’re buying a leasehold property, be sure that you’ve been told what the extra charges are, when and how they might increase and what limitations there are to what you can do to the property. Often with leaseholds, significant structural work is not allowed. 8. Be aware of shared upkeep areas Some properties include

agreements between neighbours regarding the upkeep of shared driveways and communal greens. It’s important that you know about (and agree to) these responsibilities to avoid any issues down the line. 9. Check your mortgage deed If you’re getting a mortgage to buy your property, you should have received a completed mortgage deed which gives your lender the interest in the property. As the borrower, you will pledge your new property as security against the mortgage. 10. Exchanging contracts and completion When you’ve got your mortgage offer and are happy with the report from the surveyor (carried out to make sure the property is in good condition), you’ll be presented with the contract. At the point of exchange (where you sign the contract) you’ll agree on the completion date – the date and time when the property legally becomes yours and you can move in. It’s important to note that if you decide to pull out of the move after exchanging contracts you will are likely to lose your deposit.

3. Make your moving deadline clear Let your solicitor know when you’re aiming to move. They’ll keep this in mind and let you know if it looks like complications might make it unlikely. Often the process can take longer than expected - it’s good to be on the same page. 4. Ask for an outline of the conveyancing process This will include the areas you will be required to be responsible for at various stages of the purchase. You’ll be able to be prepared with the right documents, and you’ll keep everything moving quickly. 5. Tell your solicitor about any agreements with the seller If you’ve already made agreements with the seller (these could be things like the asking price, or including the fixtures and fittings in the purchase) keep your conveyancer fully informed.
