The best of the best THE (CULINARY) STARS WERE OUT FOR THE EASTSIDE RESTAURANT AWARDS 2019 AT THE HILTON GARDEN INN. FIND OUT WHO TRIUMPHED ON THE NIGHT...
16 Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk
he Eastside Restaurant Awards 2019 was truly this year’s most glamorous night of the year. Well, what more would you expect from the shining stars of the Doncaster and South Yorkshire dining scene? This is an event that has grown in size and stature since we staged our first awards dinner back in 2013, and with the men in black tie and the ladies in glittering evening wear it was a dazzling occasion. There was a new venue for this year’s event – The Hilton Garden Inn at Doncaster Racecourse – and they did us proud with a setting fit for this prestigious event as 150-plus guests packed the venue, creating a vibrant atmosphere. Apparently there was another ceremony taking place on the same day...

Menu Confit chicken terrine with corn puree, charred corn, pickled shallot and black garlic *** Pear & cider sorbet *** Duo of lamb with mini fondant potatoes, carrot purée, roasted carrot and red wine jus *** Chocolate delice with textures of chocolate and passion fruit curd
some little lunch where they serve up this year’s Michelin stars. No doubt it was a swish affair, but we are sure it couldn’t hold a candle to 2019’s most memorable night out. Competition was keen of course, but we were delighted with how many local restaurants and cafes entered into the spirit of the occasion. It was fantastic to see all of the nominees together in one room, celebrating the superb quality of eateries to be found in our region. There were 13 awards in total and on the following pages we’ll give you the lowdown on all the winners. But of course, the entire occasion was geared towards the unveiling of the big winners of our premium award – the Eastside Restaurant of the Year for 2019. And this year’s top prize went, for the first time, to Thai at The Sal, a popular Thai restaurant in Doncaster where the spicy cuisine packs a real punch. This slightly unorthodox venue – a totally authentic Thai restaurant on top of a traditional English pub – wowed the judges with its relaxed setting, attentive, friendly service and a fabulous menu packed with delicious gastronomic delights. Thai at the Sal were double winners on the night, scooping the Best of Asia category as well as our main prize. The two other shortlisted venues in the Restaurant of the Year category were The Pantry 8020 in Misterton, which won our Best Café/Light Bite category, and The Station Restaurant & Bar at Blaxton, which won two awards – Best
Pub Restaurant and Best Newcomer. Judging by the massive round of applause that greeted the announcement – made by our guest judge Michael Price, proprietor of the Gourmet Dining Room in Doncaster – it was a popular and richly deserved award. Michael said: “Events like this show just how much quality there is across our region in restaurants, gastro pubs and cafes. Our industry is making great strides and it’s the smaller independent venues such as those represented at these awards that are in really great shape. “The judges had three great meals out and each venue had a lot going for it. The Pantry looks fantastic and has a great mix of healthy dishes and treats, while The Station is a new dining pub where it is obvious there has been no expense spared in transforming it into a modern venue with food to suit all tastes. “But there is no doubt Thai at the Sal was a worthy winner. We ate some fantastic Thai dishes, full of punchy flavours and packed with herbs and spices, and the warmth of the welcome
Eastside publishing manager Terri Holt
and the standard of service was terrific too.” Helping Michael make the final decision for Restaurant of the Year were two more judges – guest reader Kirsten Donaghy, whose knowledge and enthusiasm for the regional restaurant scene proved invaluable, and RMC Media’s managing editor Chris Wilson. Guests were greeted on arrival at the Hilton Garden Inn with a welcome drink and all of our 13 winners received an engraved plaque from Eastside. All in all it was a fantastic evening, and certainly an occasion that left us all buzzing with excitement about what the future holds for the local restaurant scene. Roll on next year... Now read on to find out more about the category winners at the Eastside Restaurant Awards 2019.

Thanks and praises... Many thanks to all the local businesses who helped us make the 2019 Eastside Restaurant Awards such a huge success. The evening was hosted by Eastside publishing manager Terri Holt and managing editor Chris Wilson. Terri looked stunning in a dress from Chique of Doncaster, who we’d like to thank for adding even more glamour to a dazzling evening. Thanks also to Dining Diva Catering Equipment Ltd for sponsoring the Best Newcomer award with a £100 prize, won by The Station Restaurant & Bar at Blaxton. Dining Diva supply plates, cutlery and glassware to many of the winners and nominees and they had a presentation stand in the room on the night. The room looked stunning, thanks in large part to Special Events Doncaster who helped create a real ‘wow factor’ with a spectacular black and silver colour scheme on the tables. Meanwhile the venue proved to be a real hit with all concerned. The Hilton Garden Inn, a fabulous new hotel at Doncaster Racecourse, provided the ideal setting for our celebration of the region’s finest dining establishments, serving up delicious food and immaculate service in a suitably grand setting. This was certainly one of those nights that nobody wanted to end and as soon as the awards were over, Eyeball Entertainment made sure the dancefloor was packed into the small hours with a winning selection of top tunes.
Best Customer Service Aagrah For the first time at the Eastside Restaurant Awards we had a Best Customer Service trophy, awarded to the venue that really goes out of its way to make customers feel welcome. There were several great restaurants and cafes in the running but Aagrah, the ever-popular Indian restaurant, was a deserved winner. They’ve won multiple awards over the years... now there’s another one to hang on their ‘wall of fame’! Manager Asif Ali has said: “We treat our customers like they’re a part of our family. We try to create a family-oriented environment where everybody feels at home.” 18 Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk
Eastside Restaurant of the Year 2019
Thai at the Sal Also: Best of Asia
e’d call it a hidden gem – but that’s not strictly the case, as the word is well and truly out about Thai at the Sal. Taking home both Best of Asia and the coveted Eastside Restaurant of the Year awards, it was third time lucky for the authentic Thai restaurant and they had plenty to celebrate. “This is our third year at the Eastside Restaurant Awards, and we are so proud (and shocked) to have been recognised for all our hard work over the last three years and beyond. “We’ve been busy expanding, working on our menu and introducing – and are still introducing – new concepts and we just want to say the biggest thank to you to our amazing customers, team and the readers of Eastside magazine because we would not be here without you. “It’s been a long journey getting to where we are now and it’s genuinely so special that we’re able to celebrate alongside our full team and the many restaurants, bars and businesses that make Doncaster’s culinary scene the wonderfully vibrant mix that is. We can’t wait to come back next year!”

EASTSIDE RESTAURANT AWARDS 2019
Best Pub Restaurant & Best Newcomer The Station Restaurant & Bar Whether you’re looking for great food, great beer or simply a great time, The Station Restaurant and Bar has it all and the team were overjoyed to take home both Eastside’s Best Pub Restaurant and Best Newcomer awards. “We only opened our doors seven months ago, so we could not have ever dreamt that we were going to take home an award (we we’re just delighted to be recognised) – let alone two! We are absolutely over the moon, we can’t believe it, thank you so much to everyone involved and to all our customers. It’s been a hard but incredible journey so far and we’re really looking forward to the next year and beyond.”
Best Café/Light Bite The Pantry 8020 Nestled in the heart of Misterton, The Pantry 8020 may be a little off the beaten track but taking home the Eastside Award for Best Café/Light Bite certainly proved that they are well and truly on the map. “This one’s for our team. They are the best group of people and we could not have achieved any of this without them over the last three years – so this one’s for you guys. We are all so passionate about food and we never stop trying to improve each dish and we are just so truly grateful to be here tonight and to be recognised for the hard work and commitment that has got us to where we are today. Thank you all so much.” 20 Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk
Best Wine Bar & Restaurant Edwins of Hatfield The team at Edwins’ aim is simple, to bring you the very best in mouth-watering local ingredients; simply prepared and that taste utterly divine. Priding themselves on a belief that food is to be savoured, shared and enjoyed with friends and loved ones, the team were overjoyed to take home the Eastside Award for Best Wine Bar and Restaurant. “The Eastside Awards put Doncaster on the map as a culinary destination and we are honoured to be recognised alongside so many other wonderful establishments across our region. We’re so surprised and delighted to celebrate with you all and cannot thank everyone involved in getting us to where we are today enough.”
Best Afternoon Tea Dainty Doris Although they were unable to join us on the night, we caught up with Rachel at Dainty Doris to see how they felt about their first win at the Eastside Restaurant Awards. “We’re honestly so honoured and proud. We have grown from nothing and it’s just so nice to think that our customers think so highly of our tiny little shop. We follow what Aunty Doris taught me and we make everything in house – and with a whole lot of love, which I think is the secret. She taught me how to bake from a young age and we put a modern twist on it, making sure our customers know exactly where all our ingredients come from.”
EASTSIDE RESTAURANT AWARDS 2019
Best Hotel Restaurant The Crown Hotel The Crown’s kitchen is headed up by head chef Kaz, who is a wizard when it comes to food and quickly garnered praise from a discerning Doncaster public for her menu of refined comfort food. The team where ecstatic to take home the Eastside Best Hotel Restaurant award. “It is fantastic to take home the Eastside award for Best Hotel Restaurant. You’re only as good as the team behind you and the team I work with are fantastic. Getting here was an absolute team effort and we are so grateful to all our customers and of course the Eastside readers. “Bawtry is a fabulous place to work and there are so many other fabulous restaurants being celebrated alongside us. We all work so hard to champion our town as a dining destination and it is lovely to be able to enjoy the results of that hard work together.”
Best Bar & Grill Bawtry’s Bar & Brasserie After a recent makeover, one of Bawtry’s most familiar landmarks – Bawtry’s Bar and Brasserie – is well and truly back at the beating heart of the town’s social scene and took home Eastside’s award for Best Bar and Grill. “We’ve only been back for five and a half months and so this has come as the biggest shock to us all. Some of the team where with us last year and took home two Eastside awards (which was incredible) and I think that it just goes to show how hard we work that we have been able to continue that success so soon and under a different name. “Doncaster is at its peak. I think it’s the best it’s ever been; with the regeneration of the Wool Market and how buzzing Bawtry is right now and it is in an absolute pleasure to celebrate alongside such talented individuals, including the cooking sensation that is Michael Price – he’s a culinary legend.”
Best Family Friendly Sunnybank Gardens
Readers’ Choice The Old Butcher’s
You’ll struggle to find a better setting than at Sunnybank Garden who were thrilled to be crowned Eastside’s Best Family Friendly for the second year running. “It was brilliant to take home this award once – let alone twice. We are made up. We’ve all been working really hard and we could not be more thankful to our team and to our loyal customers. “We feel genuinely overwhelmed by the amazing talent and comradery across the Doncaster dining scene.”
Nestled in the heart of the village of Fishlake, The Old Butcher’s have certainly come up with a winning recipe and were delighted to be crowned Eastside’s Reader’s Choice. “A huge thank you from the bottom of our hearts to all the Eastside readers for voting for us we are overjoyed to be recognised and loved by you all. We like to think the reason our customers keep coming back is because of our amazing team and we vow to continue to work hard to provide you with the friendliest and best service possible.”

“I’m Chintana, most people know me as Ton. I grew up in a village not far from the city of Ratchuburi in Thailand. I started cooking at a young age and used to cook for all my family. Mai Dang was my first restaurant I opened when I was 18 years old. Six Years later, I met my husband and we decided to start a family in Doncaster. Then this gave me the opportunity to open the first Thai Restaurant in Doncaster, The Bangkok Thai Restaurant. Ten years of running a successful business, we wanted to expand and we decided to open the Bangkok Royal Elephant. Now we’re starting a new chapter by opening the only Thai Restaurant in Doncaster, Thai At The Sal.”

Over 40 stalls and catering outlets will be clustered in the Market Place, Dower House Square, the Church Hall and the Courtyard. They will be complemented by fairground rides supplied by Roger Tuby & Son Funfairs, including the return of the ferris wheel, kindly sponsored once again by Bawtry Town Council. be a visit from Father Christmas and his elves plus the hugely anticipated, spectacular Womack’s of Bawtry Christmas window will be unveiled at 5pm. “This is our sixth event and the team have been working hard to ensure that 2019 is full of festive cheer and has lots for all ages to enjoy,” said Ross Jarvie of Bawtry Retail Association. Bawtry businesses will remain in the Christmas spirit with late night openings and festive treats at cafes, bars and restaurants. It is also an ideal opportunity to find amazing Christmas gifts for friends and family. Details of opening hours and offers can be found from individual retailers. One person who will be much missed this year is Jackie Strickland, wife of Rev Jonathan Strickland, who passed away in June after an extended illness. Jackie was a much-loved character in Bawtry. As well as managing Cherish
Dress Agency she was a very active member of the Bawtry Christmas Event steering group. She played a huge part in making the event such a success, coordinating all the stalls. In Jackie’s memory rosettes will be presented to the ‘Best Dressed Stalls’, which will be judged by Rev Strickland on the day. Once again the main event sponsors are One Call Insurance. There will be a free park and ride bus service courtesy of Wilfreda Beehive available from Hudson’s Yard and ample paid parking at the Memorial Sports Ground. CHRISTMAS
Deck the halls GO ALL OUT WITH THESE FESTIVE DECORATIONS FROM LOCAL INDEPENDENTS. t’s inching closer to that time of year again, when we unpack the Christmas tree and untangle all the decorations we’ve accumulated over the years. It can be tricky, however, to achieve a polished look – if you’ve ever spent hours trying to untangle a ball of lights, you’re not the only one – and although you absolutely love the bauble you bought over a decade ago, it may be time to consider getting something new to add to the tree. Whether you go all-out decorating for the holidays, or keep things cool and sleek, check out our pick of the best baubles and Christmas décor and make sure your home becomes something just a little bit magical – with a little help from the region’s festive experts.

Guests sparkle at the DB4C Diamond Ball Doncaster’s business community were dressed to the nines and ready to party at the Diamond Ball held in the magnificent surroundings of Bawtry Hall. The Diamond Ball was organised by Doncaster Business for the Community, the ground-breaking and highly innovative charitable trust run entirely by the town’s business community which raises much needed funds for local charities and community projects. The event marked DB4C’s second collaboration with Equinox to raise funds to support cancer patients through Firefly and Cancer Research. Almost 200 guests filled Bawtry Hall and were involved in a lively game of Heads and Tails with one lucky person winning the big prize of the evening a much sought after diamond pendant valued at £2,000 which was very kindly donated by Time For Diamonds of

Bawtry. Guests were then treated to a stunning fireworks display in the grounds of Bawtry Hall and saw out the evening on the roulette and card tables followed by a disco with dancing into the early hours. As a result of the evenings fund-raising activities, which also included an auction and raffle and the incredible generosity of the guests and the many Doncaster based businesses that donated prizes, DB4C set another record for the event. DB4C Director Nigel Tomlinson said: “The annual Ball is our only non-sports related event and once again it was a huge success which is firmly established in the social calendar. DB4C has achieved so much since it was founded two years ago and our last three events alone have broken all previous records proving that the town’s businesses have a huge heart and care deeply about the community and its well being. We will
drive on and look forward to holding more events in 2020.” Sarah Mullen added: “For Equinox to once again be asked to be the representative of our charities at the Diamond Ball was a huge privilege. Both Cancer Research and Firefly rely on donations and charity fundraising to operate and both play such a huge part in the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of Cancer both nationally and locally. The Doncaster business community have taken Equinox to their hearts and with the money raised at the Ball we hope to have a record fundraising year.” Doncaster Business For The Community (DB4C) is a unique and ground-breaking charitable trust that works exclusively to raise much-needed funds for Doncaster based charities and the local community, which is administered and led by members of the town’s business community.

Popular bawtry restaurant hosts pensioners lunch Chinese culture is peppered with festivals which celebrate special dates in the calendar. One is the ‘Chongyang’ which falls on the ninth day of the ninth lunar month (7 October) and since 1989 has been the day on which Chinese people celebrate their elders with a festival of food, drink and outings. With this in mind, the highly acclaimed China Rose Cantonese restaurant, located in the picturesque market town of Bawtry near Doncaster, once again opened its doors to pensioners in the town to enjoy a celebratory lunch, complete with
entertainment, all completely free of charge. “Chongyang is a very important festival in our calendar and this will be the fifth time we have hosted such an event and invited the local pensioners to celebrate with us in the town where we have had our restaurant for over 30 years,” commented Carly Hui, restaurant manager, China Rose. “We welcomed a record number of guests on Sunday 6 October to enjoy our superb food and hospitality and presented flowers and chocolates to the eldest lady and gentlemen who attended and to Val
Hadley and Dennis Fisher who were also celebrating birthdays on the day.” Guests enjoyed a complimentary three course-Chinese meal and drinks plus musical entertainment from Sean Stevens, performing some of the world’s best loved swing and jazz classics. “Family is held in very high esteem in Chinese culture with the young and elderly receiving extra special attention,” said Carly. “Celebrating this traditional Chinese festival with our local community is always extra special and it was another wonderful afternoon that we will all remember for years to come.”

Seriously stylish THE WILLIAM HILL ST LEGER FESTIVAL MIGHT BE OVER FOR ANOTHER YEAR, BUT THERE ARE STILL TWO VERY IMPORTANT WINNERS LEFT TO BE ANNOUNCED – EASTSIDE’S BEST DRESSED LADY AND BEST DRESSED REVOLVER GENT 2019. he William Hill St Leger Festival is known for bringing out the best of racing season’s finery – and 2019 was no different. From the getgo, a stream of elaborate race wear could be seen spilling through the gates. And, although classic creations were, once again, a popular choice, race day-ready floral adornments also seemed to be having a millinery moment this year. There may have been plenty of racing action lined up on the day, but all eyes were on the spectators in the run up to the event as we asked Eastside fashionistas from across the region to send in photos of themselves in their show-stopping Leger outfits purchased from local boutiques. October’s Eastside magazine saw our finalists revealed and since then, votes have been flooding in for your favourites. We are thrilled to announce that the winner of Eastside Best Dressed Lady 2019 is Claire Charlwood. Claire wore a Forever Unique ensemble from Chique in Armthorpe, teamed with sandal heels and a striking black fascinator from Love The Hattitude to round off the look. “I’m absolutely thrilled to win Eastside’s Best Dressed Lady competition. I would like to thank everyone who voted for me and I have to say that all the ladies looked fabulous. “I have shopped at Chique for more years than I can remember and very rarely go anywhere else as the girls look after me so well. They deliver an exemplary service which is above and beyond and they know my style, size and taste better than I do myself. Chique are my trusted ‘go to’ for every occasion and they never let me down.” Although Claire attends the St Leger every year, this was the first time she had entered Eastside’s Best Dressed Lady competition and a last-minute change of outfit paid off for her on the day. “This particular outfit was very last minute for me. Emma literally raced (pardon the pun) across town and delivered it to my business two days before I attended the St Leger, along with a fascinator from Love The

Hattitude. Then it was down to my dressmaker, Danielle Sykes, who was busy altering until the early hours on the actual day. But it all came together, and it was a fantastic event. “I really can’t take credit for the outfit deservingly – the credit goes to Chique. Once again, they saved the day, as they always do.” Some fabulous prizes were on offer, courtesy of Eastside’s style partners Lakeside Beauty, Truffle Lodge, Chique, Doncaster Racecourse and the Hilton Garden Inn. “Thank you for the amazing prizes. I’m very grateful and I’d like to pay it forward and do something charitable to see them benefit a great cause.”
Olivia Poole, of family-run Chique, says the boutique is always popular with racegoers, and was over the moon for Claire. “We are so pleased that our beautiful customer has won Eastside’s Best Dressed Lady 2019. As soon as this stunning Forever Unique jumpsuit arrived here at Chique, we knew it would be a showstopper at the races and who better to represent us wearing it than the stunning Claire. “We can’t thank everyone enough for voting for all of our Chique nominees. We are super proud of every single one of them and are so grateful for all our customers’ support over these wonderful 18 years of business.”

Best Dressed Revolver Gent ith a light shining on Eastside’s Best Dressed Lady year after year, 2019 saw the return of Eastside’s Best Dressed Revolver Gent and having scoured the St Leger Festival for the racecourse’s most dapper chaps, we left it up to you, the Eastside readers, to decide which Revolver ensemble deserved the title. All of the entries brought personality and flair and there was some stiff competition, but there could of course only be one winner. We’re delighted to announce that John Evans has won the title of Eastside’s Best Dressed Revolver Gent 2019, and he even recycled his own wedding suit to scoop the prize. “I’m shocked to have won to be honest but chuffed to bits. The other guys looked great. I’m still grinning. My wife, Sally and I had recently returned from our honeymoon and one of our first outings as a married couple was the St Leger. I had last minute change of wedding attire and rather than see my original suit, which I had happened to purchase from Revolver, go to waste, I thought why not show it off on the day.” John spends his days working as a lead engineer, so wearing a suit isn’t an everyday thing for him, but clearly, he knows how to dress to impress (though he does admit Sally gave him a helping hand when it came to enter the style stakes). I’m an engineer by trade and I do like to make the effort when I’m going out, especially if I’m heading to the races. Sally entered me in the competition, so I had no idea until I got home, and I was even more shocked when I received the call to tell me that I had won. I almost didn’t believe it. It’s nice to win something every now and again – have you seen the prizes? A big thank you to all involved. I am very grateful. “I have purchased a range of suits and other clothing from Revolver in the past. They’re a great team and they can’t do enough for you. I would certainly recommend them to anyone looking to bring a bit of race day style game.” Paul Godbehere, co-owner of Revolver, says their range of race wear proved more popular than ever in the run up to the St Leger, and could not have been happier for John.

“A massive congratulations to John. He’s a really nice guy and he looked great in his Marc Darcy wine-coloured three-piece, which complemented his wife’s dress beautifully. Although it didn’t make it down the aisle, it was still nice to see the ensemble make its winning race day debut. Some fabulous prizes were on offer, courtesy of Eastside’s style partners Lakeside Beauty, Truffle Lodge, Revolver, Doncaster Racecourse and the Hilton Garden Inn. “I hope John enjoys his winnings (he deserves it) and we look forward to welcoming him back in store to spend his voucher. “It’s been a busy two years since we moved over to Bawtry, and since then we’ve gone from strength to strength. This year, the demand for formal, wedding and race wear has been through the roof and we’d like to say a huge thank you to John and all our customers past and present for your support. Bring on the St Leger 2020!” Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk 61

High challenge Local businesswoman and former headteacher, Dr Rona Mackenzie, is to embark upon the challenge of a lifetime in order to support local innovators in business. The chief operating officer at Thoresby Courtyard-based jewellery designer, David Fowkes, has pledged to climb the highest points in each of the seven continents of the world, starting with Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa. All funds raised by Rona will support a new charity, D3, launched to help support local businessmen and woman in getting creative, innovative and dynamic projects that will have major benefits for local communities in Nottinghamshire off the ground. David Fowkes is generously supporting D3 through the creation of a unique, handmade piece of jewellery for each of the seven climbs. For this first adventure, David has chosen tanzanite, a gemstone only found in Tanzania. It has been hand-cut in Germany and flown to the UK where David has designed a stunning pendant. It will be hand manufactured by his Goldsmiths and will accompany Rona on her climbing adventure. Rona will be joining renowned ultramarathon runner and author, Charlie Engle, who will be pushing the human body’s physical and mental limitations to the limits in his dream of becoming the first person to climb from the lowest point – the depths of the dead sea - to the highest – the tip of Mount
Everest - in each of the seven continents of the world on a global adventure spanning several years. Charlie will swim, free dive, run, paddle, mountain bike and climb his way through multiple countries to support/raise funds for www.green.org. If you have an idea that you would like to get off the ground or would like to support Rona in her fund-raising efforts, full details of the charity and Rona’s adventures can be found at www.d3it.co.uk and on Instagram @D3_IT The creation and journey of the David Fowkes pendant can be found at www.d3it.co.uk/blog and www.davidfowkes.com/blog
