elcome to the November edition of Eastside. Christmas has started to creep into our consciousness and we’re already looking ahead to the festive season. If you’re looking to stock up your drinks trolley we look at spirits that range from the everyday variety to something very special. Also on the drinks front, as part of our ‘Made in Doncaster’ feature, we speak to local brewer Ian Blaylock who is aiming to put the town on the map with his carefully curated ales. We also speak to former Doncaster Knights rugby player Chris Hallam whom, since retiring, has forged a new career as a jewellery designer. See you next month for our Christmas special.

“Obviously, there’s quite a contrast from ‘crash bang’ to delicate and refined, so that raised a few eyebrows initially! The rugby world gave me a great opportunity to network, and I have made jewellery for many former teammates.”

ar from your average goldsmith, Chris Hallam began his adult life as a professional rugby player, playing for teams including Doncaster Knights, Rotherham Titans and Worcester Warriors. “I am a local lad born and raised in a former coal mining village on the outskirts of Sheffield. At comprehensive school I found a flair for sport and was lucky enough to make a career out of rugby union. This opened up a world of opportunities, experiences and friendships but came with the downside of injuries and the compulsory ‘cauliflower ear’ despite me being a scrum-half! “I finished my career seven years ago as the captain at Doncaster Knights. I was ready for new challenges and a new career. I loved the team environment, training and competing. I don’t miss it, but I enjoyed it. Jewellery has brought out my creative talents and enabled me

F

to embrace different aspects of my personality and abilities. I love what I do, the whole process; it’s something very special.” During his rugby years, Chris’ uncle, a goldsmith, taught him the trade but perhaps little did he know that eventually, his talents in design would result in the creation of a bespoke service. He now produces beautiful, one-

off pieces alongside a selection of tailored jewellery. “I am close to my uncle who has very much been a father figure to me growing up (my father passed away when I was in my early teens.) He is an artist with classical training as a silversmith who set up his own jewellery business over 30 years ago. I was at his workshop one day and he mentioned Chris meeting clients at his studio (this picture) and his rugby days (above)

taking on an apprentice. I jumped at the chance, much to his surprise. It was a steep learning curve, but I loved it. Learning on the job. Creating and developing my own style. It was a great way to transition out of rugby.” With a very diverse background compared to the ‘typical goldsmith’, Chris has had a drastic change in his career path, so what do his old teammates think to this big change? “The rugby community are naturally close-knit and supportive; the camaraderie extends beyond the pitch. Transitioning from a career in sport can be a challenging experience so people were happy for me that I had found something I love. “Obviously, there’s quite a contrast from ‘crash bang’ to delicate and refined, so that raised a few eyebrows initially! The rugby world gave me a great opportunity to network, and I have made jewellery for many former teammates. Over the years I have built a reputation within the rugby community, and I now have a client base extending to a newer generation of rugby players, from grassroots to internationals.” So what does CH Jewellery create? CH Jewellery creates bespoke and handcrafted individual pieces of jewellery. The diamonds used in the pieces are sourced by the business to meet the client’s needs and all metals used are pure. “Our focus is on quality,” said Chris. “We can rework existing jewellery to create new pieces. We believe jewellery should be worn, not kept in a drawer. We make jewellery to celebrate but also

to commemorate and we have made a number of pieces with encased ashes. To view some of our creations follow me on Instagram @ch_jewellery.” As a bespoke jewellery design business, Chris invites each client to the design studio to get involved in the design and jewellery making process to ensure that the client receives their desired product. “They can select the stones, configure the design, and I show them step by step the forging to the finishing of their jewellery through photographs and videos,” explained Chris. “It adds nothing to the cost but enhances the

experience through appreciation. It adds sentiment to a piece. In a world of production-line assembly and disposable fashion, I think clients enjoy seeing authentic craftmanship in action.” Out of the many stunningly crafted products that Chris has designed he told me that he has one favourite in particular. “My fiancé’s engagement ring. I proposed at Christmas, but I’d been planning and working on the ring for months. She kept dropping hints, but I kept my cards close to my chest and it came as a complete surprise. I usually work on expressing other people’s emotions through jewellery, so it was nice to convey my own.” Chris has an international clientele with clients as far away as China and New Zealand – “Distance is not a problem,” said Chris.

A Maltese Christmas FIVE-STAR LUXURY STAY AWAITS AT AX THE PALACE MALTA AS YOU EXPLORE THE ISLANDS THIS WINTER SEASON.

he Maltese Islands are a renowned holiday destination, attracting thousands of tourists every year to the golden sandy beaches, crystal blue waters and historically laden sights. The winter season, and the Christmas period in particular, is a vibrant one, with most localities being full of life and having plenty of activities and events on the books to jazz up the Mediterranean spirit. If you’re considering a winter getaway during the festive season, then you’re in for a treat. A Maltese Christmas is similar to most European celebrations but is quite unique, adding an extra sparkle to the festive season. While Christmas markets aren’t so popular on the island, there are a number of activities, customs, and traditions to discover, and spending your Christmas at AX The Palace in Sliema means you’ll get to experience it all. Immerse yourself in Maltese culture and unlock the door to a wealth of traditions. At AX The Palace, Maltese

customs are kept up, with festive decorations hanging in the main areas of the hotel. The Maltese crib is set up in the foyer and the kitchen brigade works full

speed ahead to bake all the best local delicacies, such as the pudina tal-Milied (Christmas pudding), pastini tal-lewz (almond treats), l-imbuljuta (warm

chocolatey drink), qagħaq tal-għasel (honey treacle rings) and more, which you can also find in traditional cafes and confectionaries around the island. The one thing to know before enjoying the holiday season in Malta is that a Maltese Christmas is synonymous with an abundance of food. AX The Palace is meticulously preparing festive menus to celebrate every part of this season, kicking things off with a Christmas Eve Dinner featuring delectable homemade dishes from the buffet section and delicious desserts. Christmas Day festivities kick off bright and early with the Early Christmas Breakfast featuring breakfast favourites and local specialities. The celebrations continue with Christmas Day Lunch including plated starters and an array of options from the carvery and hot stations, topping things off with festive-themed desserts. Take a break from all the festive goodies and walk around Sliema, where you’ll find the streets decked out in their best Christmas decorations, holiday music playing in the commercial centres, churches donning festive ornaments, and an all-round Mediterranean Christmas feel. Explore Sliema’s narrow streets and do a spot of last-minute shopping from the vast variety of retail outlets, local brands and artisan shops available. Top off your Maltese Christmas celebrations and head to one of the nearby Sliema churches to experience the Priedka talMilied, a traditional sermon delivered by a young child on Christmas Eve lasting about ten minutes and dating back to the 19th century. Another must-see during the holiday season are the presepju (crib) exhibitions. Maltese craftsmen spend months carefully carving wooden figurines to create an interesting Nativity scene. While most are true to the Biblical depiction, others play loose with the rules and add some extra characters or enhance the crib with grass-like features, water fountains, rocks and other materials. Some even compete for prizes, with one

even making it to Washington’s Museum of the Bible last year. In addition, you can get the full Maltese Christmas crib experience with the annual live crib found in Għajnsielem on Malta’s sister isle of Gozo. Walk through the various Nativity scenes brought to life by actors and animals as you sip on a cup of coffee or mulled wine. An unmissable experience to enjoy Christmas like a local! If you’re planning on staying through to the New Year, you’re in for more festivities, and of course, superfluous amounts of food, as per Maltese tradition. New Year celebrations at AX The Palace commence with a New Year’s Eve buffet dinner complemented by live entertainment that will help you celebrate the final moments of 2021 and ring in the new year in style. Kick off the new year with more food at the hotel’s New Year’s

Day Lunch, serving a variety of delectable dishes and treats to close off the festive season. While a white Christmas isn’t a possibility on an island that has well over 300 days of sunshine a year, visiting Malta during the festive season opens the door to a wealth of culture and customs unlike any other. Treat yourself and your loved ones to exceptional Maltese delicacies and witness unique traditions. Experience the Mediterranean Christmas spirit this year when spending the holiday season at AX The Palace Malta. Everyone is welcome THE GLASS STRAWBERRY IS THE ALL-DAY CAFE THAT CATERS FOR ALL. oncaster town centre has changed tremendously over the last few years and moving right along with it is The Glass Strawberry. Although the Printing Office Street venue has been under this guise since 2018, the location itself has been a cafe or restaurant for almost 40 years. And Beverley Georgiou has been at the helm for the whole of that significant period. It started off as a miners cafe serving pie and peas before becoming a selfservice restaurant and latterly an all-day cafe but throughout the whole of that time it has remained independently-run providing a quality, sociable hub for the

people of Doncaster and beyond. The Glass Strawberry is in an easy-toaccess location, with plenty of parking nearby and close to the CAST theatre, Savoy cinema and just a four-minute walk from the train station and Frenchgate Centre. It’s open all day, from 8am-5pm Monday to Saturday and 10am-4pm on Sundays and serves breakfast, brunch, lunch as well as afternoon teas. It’s fully licensed and places a firm emphasis on catering for all dietary needs. That means if you are vegan, vegetarian or require a gluten-free diet, Beverley and her team can cater for all your needs. You’ll even find vegan and

gluten-free wines and beers too and a new cocktail menu will be introduced in the coming weeks. “There’s no token vegan or vegetarian dish that you sometimes find in other places,” she said. “A lot of what we make can be adapted to suit most dietary requirements if the customer informs us when ordering. Even our signature milkshakes can be made with dairy-free cream. “It’s been a learning process but we’re keen to try new things and cater to a market that has had its eyes opened to different diets and ways of eating. This dietfriendly dish features two slices of wholemeal toast, brightly-coloured salad leaves and two poached eggs. Of course, if you prefer the ‘full English’, their cooked breakfasts take some beating. For lunch you can tuck into light bites including soup, nachos, halloumi fries and jacket potatoes or go for something more substantial from their wrap, salad or burger menu. Afternoon teas - which have to be prebooked - have proved really popular since they were launched and include finger sandwiches, hand-finished cakes, a fruit scone with jam and cream, a macaroon or eclair and a ‘glass strawberry’.You’ll have to visit for yourself to find out what this

mysterious treat is but, take my advice, it’s definitely worth trying. Unlimited tea or coffee comes as standard. Prices start from £19.95 per person or £23.95 if you want to add a glass of prosecco. Two people can share afternoon tea with a bottle of prosecco and you also have the option of a takeaway for £17. A children’s version is also available for £10.95 (£9.95 takeaway) as is a fully vegan option. Beverley, who lives on a small farm holding, sources products locally where possible and will even use herbs or vegetables grown at home. She uses KD Davis for her fruit and veg, Plane and Armstrong Butchers for her meat, and Balmforth & Co for their sustainable coffee. “There’s a healthy aspect to a lot of our menu – not so much to other parts of it! – but we like to think we offer a good balance,” said Beverley. “Catering to the different dietary requirements is really important to us and I think is reflective

of society. We encourage our customers to try these alternative dishes – sometimes they can’t tell the difference.” The Glass Strawberry operates a walkin service but you can book for large groups. With plenty of charging and USB ports throughout, and its advantageous location, it’s the perfect spot to host a meeting or staff get-together. Whether you pop in for coffee, cake or something more substantial, you can rest assured that The Glass Strawberry is fully aware of all dietary requirements and can adapt their dishes to suit. Everyone is welcome. The Glass Strawberry 48-50 Printing Office Street, Doncaster, DN1 1TR Tel: 01302 365027 www.theglassstrawberry.co.uk

AWARD WINNING RESTAURANT Winners of the 2019 Eastside Restaurant Awards

“I’m Chintana, most people know me as Ton. I grew up in a village not far from the city of Ratchuburi in Thailand. I started cooking at a young age and used to cook for all my family. Mai Dang was my first restaurant I opened when I was 18 years old. Six Years later, I met my husband and we decided to start a family in Doncaster. Then this gave me the opportunity to open the first Thai Restaurant in Doncaster, The Bangkok Thai Restaurant. Ten years of running a successful business, we wanted to expand and we decided to open the Bangkok Royal Elephant. Now we’re starting a new chapter by opening the only Thai Restaurant in Doncaster, Thai At The Sal.”

o experience necessary. It seems to be a common theme but not everyone who has set up a brewery, particularly in the last few years, often comes from a brewing background. These producers often come into the industry from something completely different but all share a love of beer and a passion to succeed. Sometimes that’s all you need. Ian Blaylock would put himself in that category. A mechanical engineer by trade, he’d run his own garage business for 15 years before one day deciding that he wanted a complete change of direction and started to build his own brewery. “With my mechanical and engineering skills I built the brewery from scratch which took a lot longer than expected but it meant that I would be able to maintain and repair it myself,” he recalls. “Basically I was struggling to find a beer I really liked, so decided to make my own.” Ian, supported by his wife Alison,

opened Doncaster Brewery in 2012. It started off as a 15-barrel operation – which equates to 4,320 pints – on an industrial estate on the outskirts of town but Ian quickly had other ideas. “We decided to move to smaller premises in the town centre in 2014, which meant we had to reduce the operation to a ten-barrel plant,” he says. Although this might initially have seemed like a step backwards, it actually proved to be the opposite and allowed the couple to open a tap room on the Young Street premises, the perfect outlet to serve their Doncaster-themed ales. “When I started the brewery I wanted to put Doncaster back on the map and focus on its fantastic history,” Ian adds. “Moving the brewery from the industrial estate where we started into the town centre was quite a challenge. However, we had a fantastic gang of friends who came along to assist as we manhandled the brewing vessels through the front window of the property.”

Doncaster Brewery has six core ales, which are brewed in rotation. The most popular is Sand House Blonde (3.8%), a golden straw coloured beer, made with lager and wheat malts using Cascade and Summit hops. It has a citrusy aroma with a refreshing tangy bitter flavour. Cheswold Bitter (4.2%) is deep copper in colour and made using mainly Maris Otter malt among others and a single hop variety of East Kent Gouldings. It is signifed by a fruity and spicy aroma with a lingering spicy bitter finish. If you fancy something darker, Charter Porter (5%) is almost black in colour, it is made with Maris Otter pale, Dark Crystal, Black and Chocolate malt and hopped using only East Kent Gouldings. A spicy earthy aroma with a slightly spicy bitter flavour and a single hint of coffee/chocolate on the finish characterise this ale. Mucky Bucket (5%) is a classic pale ale with a twist. Deep reddish brown in colour and made with Maris Otter pale malt and Caramalt, it is

finished with roast barley using East Kent Gouldings, Cascade and Summit hops. It offers a spicy citrus aroma with a grapefruit flavour and a slight hint of chocolate on the finish. Perfect for this time of year is AD71 – Pumpkin Porter, which is made with 54 kilos of pumpkin flesh, Maris Otter and black malt and roasted barley and hopped with Hallertauer and Cascade hops. It’s also spiced with allspice, cinnamon and nutmeg which creates a very spicy and Moorish flavoured porter with a sharp flavour. Lastly, Town Fields Belgium Pale (6.6%) has more of a kick and is made with Pilsner and Vienna malt, Caramel/Crystal malt and Special B. it is hopped with Hallertauer Mittelfrueh and Pilot hops. Town Fields is a season ale brewed for the Christmas period. Ian generally brews one beer at a time but with two fermenters he can have two brews in progress at the same time. All his beers are vegan-friendly which

can give them a slightly cloudy appearance, as he explains: “In order to make a beer vegan-friendly it is basically just a case of not adding finings. Isinglass finings is a clearing agent made from the protein called collagen and is extracted from the swim bladders of fish. The finings remove organic compounds making the beer very clear. Without finings the beer can sometimes have a haze.” Nine years down the line and Doncaster Brewery is still largely Ian and Alison working as a team. Alison mainly does all the administration and works on the bar whilst Ian brews and manages stock orders from other breweries and orders bottle stock for the bar. The addition of a small kitchen means they have a small range of food options too. Doncaster ale aficionados have been quick to take to Ian’s range of beers and is something he hopes to build on in the coming years. “Our beers don’t travel far from

Doncaster,” he says. “We have a good following among our customers who especially enjoy the seasonal brews which they have to wait patiently for. The Sand House Blonde is our bestseller and this has to be brewed every other brew to keep up with demand.” Ian is a big fan of traditional bitter IPAs and West Coast IPAs but would love to create a Doncaster lager. “We don’t have room to expand while the brewery is within this building but in the future I would like to purchase some Unitank vessels which will enable me to explore different styles of beer, up to and including a lager,” he adds. Collaborations are also something else he’d like to explore and cites two as particular favourites: “Turning Point make some cracking beers as do Bone Machine. I am always interested in trying something new and different.” Much like the seasonal brews, we’ll be waiting patiently. Cheers. Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk 31

The spirit of Christmas FROM PREMIUM BOTTLES TO EVERYDAY TIPPLES, EMBRACE THE FESTIVE SEASON WITH THIS CLASSY SELECTION. BY MARTIN EDWARDS. here are time-honoured traditions that have to be observed at Christmas. The ritual is enshrined in The five commandments we all know so well. 1. Thou shalt attend the office Christmas party 2. Thou shalt beg forgiveness the next morning, and thy thoughts will be cringeworthy (“Did I really kiss a man on the forehead?”) 3. Thou shalt order a multitude of kitchen gadgets from Lakeland and place them in gift boxes. Thence they will be banished to an unknown cupboard for all time 4. Thou shalt not refuse a fourth helping of sprouts and turkey, be thou ever so full 5. Thou shalt drink spirits. It’s the last one that is interesting. Why on earth should most people drink strong liqueurs at Christmas, and at no other time in their lives? It’s certainly not enshrined in the scripts – for instance, who could imagine the three wise men bringing a bottle of Bells along rather than exotic gifts (definitely not obtained from Lakeland)? But there’s little doubt that this national oddity happens every year. At one end of the scale, there is the torrent of Baileys and Malibu that always get the mad aunts kicking over the traces at Yuletide. At the other, there are rare, refined and expensive malt whiskies and cognacs that are the province of the connoisseur. In between, there is a selection of tipples varying from the fine and sought after to the downright eccentric. Here are a few to get you in the mood.

DRINKS

White Peak Distillery Gin - £36 – Derbyshire If you like a floral-style gin, this is for you. And it’s distilled locally in the ancient woodland of Shining Cliff.

J.P. Adlam No. 8 - £38 Lashings of juniper infused with coriander, Seville oranges and a hint of star anise make this gin truly unique. Can be enjoyed with any flavour of tonic and garnish and is a gin to match your inquisitive nature and search for quality.

Frapin Cigar Blend XO Coganc 100% Grande Champagne Premier Cru De Coganc £110 This is more accurately an eau-de-vie than Cognac. Quite what the fruit adds (apart from taking up bottle space) is not explained in the accompanying information. It does however promise “the scent of wooden cigar boxes, typical of a Grande Champagne cognac”.

O’Donnell Sticky Toffee Moonshine £25 Made by passing through slowly melted sugar, this is one for the really sweet tooth.

Deadhead Monkey Chocolate Rum – £66.50 Who wouldn’t be thrilled to have this charming little chap on display on their sitting room? The contents are a mixture of six-year cask-aged rum with roasted cacao beans. Just the thing to brighten up your Christmas morning.

Spirit of Yorkshire Cream Liqueur £25 A bit like Baileys. Only dearer.

Beluga Celebration Vodka £39.50 Beluga Celebration is a Limited Edition release dedicated to the 115th anniversary of the Marinsk Distillery. The water used in its manufacture is apparently solely from 300m deep wells within Siberia. So it must make a difference.

Laphroaig Ian Hunter Chapter 3 – £975 This 33-year-old Laphroaig Single Malt is the third in the exclusive series commemorating Ian Hunter. A vintage 1987 distillation, fully matured in refill ex-Bourbon barrels, heralding waves of aniseed, peaty and peppery notes, cedar, kumquat zest and gorse flower.

Blantons Original Bourbon - £70 Blanton’s Original Single Barrel was once designated for ambassadors, dignitaries, and Colonel Blanton’s family and friends. Now it’s yours – for a price.

EATING OUT

Don’t mess with tradition HAS RICHARD ABBEY FOUND THE PERFECT PARTNER TO A FISH AND CHIP SUPPER? think it’s something that stretches back to childhood but for me, there’s no better accompaniment to a fish and chip supper than a steaming mug of hot, sweet tea. I don’t know if it’s something uniquely northern or just the British way but I don’t think there’s anything finer. I lay this quirk, if it is one, at the feet of my granddad who would often take myself and my sister swimming on a Saturday morning and then call for fish and chips on the way home. We would then sit around his dinner table with lashings of thickly-sliced bread and butter and mugs of tea before watching Grandstand. I guess some things just stick. Family was something that sprang to mind on a recent visit to Fish Bits in Hyde Park Doncaster. The takeaway and

I

36 Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk

restaurant is run by husband and wife John and Joanna Xenofontos has a distinct family feel and we were immediately given a warm welcome when we walked through the doors one sunny lunchtime. It’s a takeaway ‘chippy’ at heart but, since taking over the business from John’s parents a few years ago, the couple have really developed the restaurant side of it turning it into a contemporary space with a menu that includes their famed fish and chips and much, much more. It’s fully licensed too and they offer a good selection of draught and bottled beers, wines and spirits. There was only one choice for me, though, and a pot of tea for one (£1.90) swiftly arrived while we deliberated over the extensive menu. My dining companion opted for a Pepsi Max

(£2.69). The menu offers cod, haddock or plaice, all served with proper chip shop chips - standard. But you can also tuck into fish pie, lasagne, burgers, kebabs and there’s an extensive children’s menu too. It’s all part of John and Joanna’s policy of offering something for everyone and making them feel welcome. To start you can choose between a couple of sharing platters as well as halloumi fries and calamari. Joanna recommended the Fisherman’s Basket (£6.99) which came with crispy whitebait, calamari, cod goujons and cheese balls, all served on a bed of dressed salad, and was just enough for two to share. My dining companion opted for the recommended ‘Fish Bits Special’ for main course, a bargain at £8.99 and included

EATING OUT

a choice of cod or haddock, chips and a choice of peas, beans, curry sauce or gravy. Choosing cod and mushy peas, he enthused over the fish which he described as fresh and seasoned to perfection. The flaky fish fell apart with the slightest touch of the fork, and the chips were well up to the high standard you expect from a fish and chip restaurant. To say I had food envy was an understatement, the smell of salt and vinegar alone was enough to evoke those cherished childhood memories. I opted for the halloumi burger (£6.99), which came with chips, four giant onion rings and coleslaw. John explained that all their halloumi is imported from Cyprus, putting a firm emphasis on quality. It certainly tasted good; the cheese had just the right amount of bite and the slightly charred bits gave an extra hit of salty flavour. The onion rings were excellent too. Joanna also brought us a portion of chilli nachos, something they are thinking about adding to the menu.

Cheesy, crunchy and with the right amount of chilli heat, they got the thumbs up from us. Dessert was a step too far for me but my companion couldn’t resist the glutenfree Chocolate fudge cake (£4.95), served hot. Fish Bits have a good choice of sweet treats if you have room, many of which are homemade. They do impressive milkshakes too. The Xenofontos family has a longstanding reputation in the fish and chip business, first opening in Liverpool in 1958 before having premises in Nottingham and Derby. They settled in Doncaster in 2008 and have enhanced their reputation further since then. It was no surprise when they won Eastside’s Readers’ Choice award in 2018. “I can’t believe it! This is the one we really wanted to win,” said owner Joanna at the time. “It’s always been about word of mouth. We like to provide good service, we’ve tried to put a twist on it, so it’s not just fish and chips.” Fish Bits is available to hire for special

occasions and they are currently taking booking for Christmas. They have scores of regular diners and are particularly blown away when they get visitors who have recently visited the coast and deem their fish and chips better than they’d found in any seaside resort. That’s high praise indeed. “We’re proud of what we do and treat all our customers like family,” said Joanna. “And let’s be honest, you can’t beat a cup of tea with fish and chips.” My grandad would approve. Steven Turner, Head of King’s Magna, the middle school of QE’s unique four-school model

Fostering curiosity QUEEN ETHELBURGA’S COLLEGIATE’S INNOVATIVE CURRICULUM SUPPORTS THE TRANSITION FROM PRIMARY TO SENIOR EDUCATION. Year 6 curriculum focused on delivering skills that are important for future success, with no formal SAT testing, fosters curiosity for the important journey into Key Stage 3 and beyond, says Head of King’s Magna Middle School at Queen Ethelburga’s Collegiate (QE), Steven Turner. At QE, their mission is for all members of their community to aspire to the Hill Standard ‘To be the best that I can with the gifts that I have’. Steven Turner, Head of King’s Magna, the middle school of QE’s unique fourschool model, says: “We harness this individuality through an innovative curriculum. This is a curriculum which supports the transition between the Collegiate’s primary education at Chapter House, our Preparatory school, and the demands of GCSEs and beyond in our two senior schools.” In a difference from the traditional school model where children stay in primary education until the end of Year

6, QE students join King’s Magna in Year 6, and stay with them until Year 9.They find many students are ready for a new challenge at the end of Year 5, so they made it a focus to develop a unique curriculum for this transitional year, with content designed in partnership between secondary school subject specialists and highly experienced primary age teachers. Importantly, they have made a crucial decision not to assess their Year 6 students using SATS testing. Students are instead assessed formally at three points during the year using standardised and moderated ‘common evaluation tasks’ these are used to track progress and

identify what each student can do and what they could do to improve further. This decision allows them to focus on delivering those skills that the students need to be successful in Key Stage 3 and beyond. Their all-encompassing, holistic approach to developing the whole student, which is at the heart of everything they do, creates a supportive, vibrant and caring school environment throughout King’s Magna. They are committed to equipping students with the skills and knowledge they need to move seamlessly to QE College or Faculty at the end of Year 9, growing and maturing into their teenage years with confidence. To find out more about this innovative curriculum visit qe.org for more information, where you can book on their next Open Day on 27 November.
