Whydidyouchoosetoworkwith pewter?

Iwasworkinginthecutleryindustry andIbecameawareofthe WorshipfulPewterCompanyin London.Theydoacompetitioneach year,somywifeandIdecidedto createadesignforit.Weenteredthe competitionandendedupcoming second.

WedesignedaMad-Hatter’s teapot,ithadclocksonthesideand thehatwasacupwithasaucer. We’vejustrecentlysoldthat particularpieceinthegallery.

Itwasaroundthisperiodthatwe decidedtogetourownlittle workshop.Then,thefollowingyear,I thinktheremightbeanarticleup thereinthelocalnewspaper,Laura designedalightwithacandleinit. Shewasacceptedtogoonfurtherto developtheidea.Ithenmadethe designintoabook.Wewonthe competitionandgotsomemore moneytoinvest.

Sheepskinrugsmightnotbethe firstthatspringstomindbutwas somethingthatcapturedthecouples’ attention.

“We’dseenvarioussettingsaround theglobe,purchasedpurchasedsome forourhomeandwereblownawayby theversatilityofthem,”saidSteve. “Thedifferencetheycouldaddtothe roominaninstant,bothwarmthand colourwasamazing.Wethenspent monthssourcingthebestsuppliersin theworldtosourceafantastic product.”

Likeformanybudding entrepreneurs,thepandemicprovided acatalystforSteveandDeetostart theirbusiness.AtthetimeStevewas workingintheconstructionindustry, mainlyfocusedonhealthandsafety andqualitymanagement,whilstDee workedinthehairandbeautysector asaconsultant.Theywerelivingwhat theywoulddescribeasa‘hectic lifestyle’inWakefieldwiththeirfour daughtersandlabradorsandyearned forspacetogrow-notjusttheir businessbutfamilytoo.Afifth daughterhassincejoinedthefamily andtheyhaverelocatedtotheNorth Nottinghamshirecountryside,toa smallfarmwithalittleoverfiveacres ofpaddocks,lakesandwoodland.

“Thewholeworldwasliving throughunprecedentedtimes,nobody knewwhattoexpectfromthefuture, jobsecuritywasaconstantworryand workingfromhomewasthenew

normal,”saidSteve.“Ithadlongbeen adreamtostartourownbusinessand themixtureofuncertaintyand ambitiongotthebetterofus,we decidednotimelikethepresentand tooktheleap.Lifehasbecomemuch quieterandamuchmoremanageable pacealthoughwestillwishtherewere morehoursintheday!”
