Birkdale

Credit: James Shaw Photography

Birkdale is one of Sheffield’s leading schools and, from September 2020, it will begin to welcome girls into their Prep School. In the coming years, they will be part of the entire school just as they are currently with their coeducational Sixth Form. For over 100 years, the School has never stood still. Through their long and distinguished history, the School has continued to grow and evolve whilst always promoting an excellent education for pupils in a caring, Christian environment. Birkdale is proud to be a family school that moves with the times. Girls are part of your family and they are part of theirs. In 1995, they welcomed girls into the Sixth Form. And now, the School has decided they should be part of the entire family. They will be accepting admissions from boys and girls to join the Prep School, in classes between Reception and Year 3, and these co-educational classes will continue through the Prep and Senior School. What remains the same is the great education that pupils receive, with access to a wide range of extra-curricular opportunities. About the Mount Mount St Mary’s College offers a first class education to boys and girls aged 11-18. The school is made up of a cosmopolitan community of boy and girl day pupils and boarders. Founded in 1842, the Mount is a Jesuit school and is place of tradition, innovation and integrity, which prides itself on its visions and values. Our aim is that, through the pursuit of excellence in all we do and by caring for the whole person, we produce grateful and generous, learned and wise young men and women of conscience, compassion and competence. Headmaster Dr Nicholas Cuddihy said: “We are an inclusive school and families of all faiths and backgrounds are welcomed here. “Our mission is to know our pupils and understand them. We want to challenge and support them so they grow to be fulfilled, purposeful and happy members of society who care in the proper sense for others and for themselves.” Dr Cuddihy added: “This is a happy school – a school with more than 175 years of tradition and heritage. “We would love to tell you more about the Mount and warmly welcome you to register for the 2020 Entrance Assessment.” The Mount’s unique Homeroom system ensures children who join the school in Year 7, do so with maximum support in place. The system aims to make the transition from prep or junior

school as smooth and care-free as possible by supporting pupils academically and pastorally. The Homeroom system is just one element of the superb care offered at the Mount, which aims to ensure every child is made to feel as happy and secure as possible.

Our community The Mount is a Jesuit school but is always inclusive and families of all faiths and backgrounds are warmly welcomed. Our pupil community at Mount St Mary’s College is made up of day and boarding students. Some of our day pupils opt for a flexi-boarding arrangement which sees them stay at school and board on an ‘as-and-when basis.’ This arrangement allows them flexibility around their studies and extra-curricular activities. It also provides a wonderful preparation time for a future move to university. For those who are day pupils, we have an extensive network of buses which operate across South Yorkshire, North East Derbyshire and North Nottinghamshire, collecting them in a morning and returning them home at the end of the day.

Find out more To find out more about our amazing school or our preparatory division, Barlborough Hall School, please contact us and request a prospectus by visiting www.msmscollege.com/request-aprospectus and completing the online form. A great pleasure WARD BROTHERS HAVE BEEN FURNISHING THE PEOPLE OF DONCASTER AND BEYOND FOR 100 YEARS. WE LOOK BACK AT A CENTURY OF SERVICE.

ard Brothers was founded in 1919 by brothers, Fred and Tom Ward, who started trading in Doncaster’s Cemetery Road shortly after serving in World War I. The duo originated from Ripon, where they were a family of seven and were cabinet makers by trade. They were enticed to Doncaster by relatives who were already settled in the area and in these early years, manufactured furniture to order, personally delivering it door to door by hand cart. The move from manufacturing to retailing occurred in 1930, with the purchase of 32 Harewood Terrace in Waterdale: a row of exclusive residential properties built in 1826 and named after the industrialist, Mathias Harewood that Ward Brothers still occupy today. It was an excellent choice for the budding retail outlet, as by this time, the land in front of Harewood Terrace was extremely busy – then occupied by a bus station. Motorists were able to park their vehicles in the vicinity free of charge and Ward Brothers was in a prime location to attract custom, which later led to the renting of two neighbouring properties.

W

26 Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk

The original Cemetery Road plot was maintained as a warehouse facility, allowing the brothers to offer items above and beyond furniture, such as carpets, lino and curtains. They swiftly became known as the “complete house furnishers”, but the Ward Brothers expansion came to a halt during World War II – a time when they fought hard to survive by manufacturing and retailing ‘utility’ furniture. On cessation of hostilities, more property was acquired at Harewood Terrace, and in the mid 1920s, Fred married and moved to Apley Road with his wife, Elsie. They went on to have a daughter, Betty who married Harold Fiddler in 1948 and became Company Chairman until her death in 2011. Tom Ward never married and died in 1954, after which Harold joined his father-inlaw in running the business. His son, Howard Fiddler took over as Managing Director in the wake of his father’s sudden death in 1975, until 2013, when his son, Tom Fiddler took over the position and overall responsibility for the running of the business.

In the ensuing decades following Mr Ward’s death, trade continued to grow. More property was acquired at Harewood Terrace in the late 1970s, including the then Unedus Shoe Repairers and Attenborough & Beet’s garage, which enabled the company to occupy a continuous run of properties from number 29 through to 40. The business further expanded by purchasing property number 45 and subsequently acquired the adjoining property: 16/17 Wood Street, to create a new standalone carpet department. Today, the company occupies 25,000 square feet of retail space across both sites, sympathetically restoring each building to effectively display the extensive range of furniture, carpets, rugs and curtains in over 100 individual room settings. Through it all, Ward Brothers has remained an independent, family owned business and has built an outstanding reputation for supplying the very best quality products. Its strategy for success is simple and is based on delivering only the very best in leading brand names, which includes Ercol, Ekornes, Duresta, Ulster, G-Plan, Nathan, Vi-Spring, Parker Knoll and Sherborne [to name only a handful] and is backed up by an unparalleled standard of excellence in customer service.

“Our greatest pleasure is knowing we have successfully served our many loyal customers for over 100 years. It has been an honour to celebrate this anniversary with them.” Now, the company employs 21 members of staff from its two retail sites and warehouses and “recognises the importance of providing innovative training” to enable individuals to develop their potential and ensure the Ward Brothers name continues to flourish through the next century and beyond. “I am extremely proud to be a member of the fourth generation of a family who have had the honour to work in this special business, striving always to be true to Fred and Tom’s original values of quality, craftsmanship, attention to detail and good customer service,” says Tom Fiddler. “Never ones to rest on our laurels, we have recently undergone a massive

refurbishment and our new look store was officially opened to the public by the Civic Mayor on 19 September, which saw our birthday celebrations kick off with a series of promotional events throughout the month. “Our greatest pleasure is knowing we have successfully served our many loyal customers for over 100 years. It has been an honour to celebrate this anniversary with them and we look forward to the next 100 years and beyond.” Ward Brothers 29-40 Waterdale, Doncaster, DN1 3EY Furniture: 01302 811911 Carpets: 01302 814514 www.wardbrothers.co.uk

GARDEN

Go green this winter USE THE COLD WEATHER AS AN EXCUSE TO BRING THE OUTSIDE, INSIDE. GENEVIEVE BRAUND LOOKS AT THE BEST HOUSE PLANTS TO BRIGHTEN UP YOUR HOME.

ith winter looming, many our gardens will be looking a little bare compared with the bright and blooming summer months. However, colourful plants and vibrant flowers are not, and should not, be reserved for summertime. With the right plants you can create a high-impact but low-maintenance scheme, to lift the spirits on even the darkest of days. And by bringing this nature into the home, there’s no chance they’ll ever be dulled or damaged by that oh-so-inevitable blanket of snow. We’ve narrowed down the best plants to incorporate into your home this winter, and discuss how to display them for maximum impact.

W

30 Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk

Herb Heaven Whether it’s coriander you crave, for the perfect pico de gallo, or you’re in search of mint for your homemade mojitos, herb gardens make the perfect addition to any kitchen window ledge. Once you’ve chosen the herbs you’d like to include in your mini garden, the easiest way to get things started is to purchase a little baby herb plant that’s ready to grow. These cost as little as 50p in supermarkets, just add sunlight and water!

Primp your Plant Pots You’ve picked your plants, but now it comes to displaying them. For taller floor plants, opt for traditional terracotta pots for a spot of earthiness. Short on space? Consider hanging pots to showcase trailing houseplants such as ferns. And why not try your hand at making your own plant pots by upcycling tins or jars [or old coffee cups like picutred above] to create a unique and personal creation, in colours tailored to suit your space.

GARDEN

Kalanchoë To add a real pop of colour to your room, consider Kalanchoë; a resilient and exotic plant that happily requires very little effort from you. The plant thrives in dry environments and adapts well to temperature changes. Blooming for weeks, even months, at a time, the flowering Kalanchoë makes a pretty addition to any indoor garden.

Aloe Vera Widely known for its healing properties and as an ingredient in many skin care products, aloe vera also makes a striking contrast to the soft furnishings of any home. Its spikey leaves have a geometric quality and add tropical flair to your living or work space. Tolerant of forgetful waterers, the aloe vera is a dessert plant and requires a water every one to two weeks – if only children were so easy to look after!

Peace Lily A long-time favourite of those with and without green fingers, the Peace Lily is a forgiving plant that not only brightens up a living space, but also cleans the air of the room it’s in. The Peace Lily has mastered body language, giving hints to their owner about when it needs watering or more light, and when taken care of correctly, these pretty perennials can live for years.

Go bespoke IF YOU PREFER THE PERSONAL TOUCH, NEWLY-REFURBISHED SMALL WORLD TRAVEL ARE ON HAND TO CREATE THE HOLIDAY OF YOUR DREAMS. efore the rise of the internet, every holiday began with a trip to the local travel agent. Now we’re all a lot more tech savvy, we know how to go online and root out bargain flights and great value hotel rooms. You’d think this might mean the end of the line for travel agents, but far from it. Their role may have changed massively but they still have a key part to play in making your holiday a truly memorable occasion. Small World Travel in Tickhill is now in its 35th year. Founded by Jeff Rhodes during the mid-1980s travel boom, it now has Jeff ’s son Paul at the helm of a team of four travel experts dedicated to bringing the best the world has to offer to their customers. They specialise in bespoke holidays for seasoned travellers who have already put in the air miles and seen the sights across several continents. “People nowadays want every part of their holiday tailoring to their particular passions, whether it’s restaurant recommendations or cultural experiences,” he says. “For example they don’t just want opera tickets, they want the best pre-show dinner and perhaps even backstage access.” This is where Small World Travel comes into its own; whether you are planning a city break, a luxury cruise or an epic journey crossing continents involving travel by sea, rail and air, they’ve done their research and have ‘boots on the ground’ experience. “We are constantly learning and

B

increasing our knowledge, it’s like creating a little black book of contacts all over the world that can offer the experiences our customers want and ensure they are treated well. “That doesn’t necessarily have to be top end luxury but it should be tailormade to exactly what they want.” One big change at Small World Travel in recent months has been a complete overhaul of the office, offering a bright, modern, and open-plan feel. The cupboard that 20 years ago may have contained endless boxes of brochures has been transformed into a bar area in preparation for ‘meet the expert’ sessions in the coming winter where customers will be offered the chance to meet suppliers whose knowledge in their particular field of travel is second to none. Have a glass of fizz, find out the latest news and perhaps pick up some inspirational ideas for your next holiday. “The refurb was all about a change of environment. We want people to think that their holiday starts here, the moment they walk in the door,” says Paul. Current travel hot spots for those who want to experience something different include Japan, South America, India, Cambodia and China.

These are destinations with big language and cultural barriers to overcome; not many people would be comfortable just jumping on a flight and ‘winging it’. But with a carefully curated trip prepared by Small World Travel you don’t have to worry about the logistics, just enjoy the experience and soak it all up. Multigenerational travel is also on the rise, often with grandparents taking the whole family to places like the Caribbean or Florida. This type of trip comes with a real mixed bag of requirements – how can you find a holiday that keeps everyone happy, from grandparents to teens and toddlers? These are the types of problems that the Small World Travel team love to solve. And in the rare situation that any problems do arise, you have the fall-back of knowing someone’s on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week. In fact, for any set of tickets given out by Small World Travel, Paul’s personal number is on the wallet. Over the years those calls have been few and far between. But it shows the commitment he has to delivering the perfect bespoke holiday and leaving nothing to chance. Winning formula AFTER FINDING CONVENTIONAL SLIMMING CLUBS DIDN’T WORK FOR HER, ANNE KAY TURNED TO MEDISCULPT WEIGHT LOSS THERAPY FROM G&M HEALTHCARE – AND THE RESULTS HAVE BEEN ASTOUNDING. fter a lifetime of struggling and failing to control her weight, Anne Kay feared she would never shed the excess pounds that were the source of so much frustration. But after losing the best part of three stones in just under three months, she finally believes she is going to reach her ideal weight – and it’s all down to Medisculpt Weight Loss Therapy from G&M Healthcare. When Anne met G&M’s senior clinical therapist Sarah O’Brien for a free informal consultation, she was convinced she was one of those people for whom diets just did not work. “I’m 60 and I’ve been dieting since I was 13. Conventional slimming clubs did not work for me. I’d lose weight at first but it would all come back on. When you’ve lost just three pounds in nine weeks you know it’s not working.” But all that changed when Anne agreed to try Medisculpt Weight Loss Therapy – the pounds simply fell away from the start. More importantly, the weight loss continued week after week. “I have never felt better in my life,” she says. “I feel full of energy and instead of sitting on the couch watching TV, I am out in the world, gardening and enjoying life. “I’ve never lost so much weight in such a short space of time and that’s where the motivation comes from, because you can see the results week by week.” Anne is on a controlled eating plan consisting of around 40 varieties of sachet foods alongside a list of unlimited vegetables and fruit. She combines the diet with two treatments: LPG (lipo-masage which reduces cellulite and sagging skin, giving a toned look) and BTL Vanquish ME (a non-surgical option for people with stubborn fat pockets). “The treatments reduce the chance of being left with loose skin following the weight loss, and they have worked brilliantly for me,” says Anne. “Everyone who knows me has noticed a massive difference. I even managed to lose half a stone when I went on ten-day holiday to Cornwall. Normally I’d have

been giving in to temptation and eating cream teas and pasties, but I resisted and ate salads instead.” Anne visits G&M Healthcare once a week for a weigh-in and a health check, and she feels certain the advice and encouragement she receives from the whole team, including her therapist Sarah and Dr Grace Hula, is a key element in her success. When Anne loses another couple of pounds she will reach a total weight loss of exactly three stones and from then on her diet will change, introducing more normal food in a controlled way and reducing the number of sachets. Her target is a total weight loss of four and a half stones and she is convinced that after a lifetime of failed diets she will achieve her goal. “Everyone is so supportive, I really can’t fault the treatment I get. I’d certainly recommend the Medisculpt diet and the team at G&M Healthcare. I’d urge anybody struggling with their weight to contact them for an initial consultation and change their life – because basically that is what it has done for me.”

Real weddings WHO BETTER TO TELL YOU ABOUT THE VIRTUES OF OUR REGION’S VENUES THAN THOSE WHO HAVE EXPERIENCED THEM FIRST-HAND? RACHEL MARTIN SPEAKS TO A HAPPY COUPLE ABOUT THEIR WEDDING EXPERIENCE.

Hannah and Daniel said “I do” at Bawtry Hall… How did you meet?

Daniel and I met on a night out in Barnsley. He was a friend of a friend and recognised me straight away as I danced in the gym where he trained. Our first date was a trip to the local cinema – I was 16 at the time, Dan was 19, and we have spent pretty much every day together since. We now live in Wombwell with our two-year-old cocker spaniel, Arnie. When and how did Daniel propose?

We got engaged in July 2014 on a family cruise around the Mediterranean. Dan walked me to the back of the boat to watch the sunset and I was completely oblivious to what was about to happen. I thought he was reaching for his phone to take a picture! When it came to searching for your wedding venue, was the experience as you expected?

Originally, we booked a venue off plan, but due to the build falling behind schedule we pulled out and decided to look elsewhere. Whilst scrolling through 48 Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk

Facebook I came across an open day at Bawtry Hall. By this point it was six months until our chosen date – which was five years to the day we got engaged. I called my mum in floods of tears and told her about the beautiful venue I had found. I got in touch straight away, and to my surprise, our date was available. I couldn’t believe it. I was at work at the time and so my mum [Claire] drove to the venue to officially pencil in our day. It was the best decision we made. I just can’t believe I didn’t see the venue sooner – it is perfect in every way. What’s the most stressful aspect of planning a wedding?

There’s so much to do! Especially in six months. I had to find new suppliers and see if the suppliers that I had previously

booked were willing to travel to my new venue. I also had to rebook the registrar. Given the timescales, I was worried we wouldn’t get the slot we wanted, but we were so lucky, and everything fell into place as planned. Tell us a little bit about your ceremony.

I surprised Dan and his groomsman with a helicopter as their transport to the venue. It was a once in a lifetime experience and just made our day that extra bit special. In typical English fashion, the rain delayed the helicopter by 40 minutes, which meant that we had to push our ceremony back to 1.30 – but nothing was too much trouble. I walked down the aisle to the instrumental version of A Thousand Years. It was such a blur. What did you wear?

My wedding dress was from Ava Rose Hamilton in Lancashire, who at the time were filming for Say Yes to The Dress with Gok Wan. There may be a small snippet of me in the next series, which is due to be aired soon. Did you work with any local suppliers?

All Occasions dressed our venue and we received so many comments from family

048 - 049 ESide Oct19_Layout 1 20/09/2019 10:37 Page 2

and friends about how amazing Bawtry Hall was and how beautiful it was dressed. Karen did an amazing job decorating the chairs and centrepieces, and the flower and candle display that lined the aisle was beautiful. Capturing our day was Life in Pixels and Red Roots Film, who are both based in our hometown and Bawtry Hall recommended DJ Paul and Lez the toast master to keep our guests entertained. Our floristry was provided by JJ Flowers and my [amazing] cake was from Pantry Door – both based in Chesterfield. What did Bawtry Hall offer from the moment you visited the venue, right the way through to the planning, ceremony and aftercare?

We received email updates from the team at every stage to make sure all our plans were in place and had regular meetings to confirm all our requirements. All the staff were absolutely amazing both before and on our wedding day. Craig [managing director at the Crown Hotel

Bawtry and Bawtry Hall] was wonderful and drove my wedding party from The Crown Hotel – where my sister and I spent the night before the wedding – to Bawtry Hall, to save us splashing out on a wedding car. What did you eat?

Dan and I never actually got the chance to sample any of the evening food, as we were too busy dancing, but we received nothing but compliments all day. After the ceremony, we served canapés [toad in the hole and mini wagyu burgers] followed by our wedding breakfast. The menu consisted of tomato soup or shredded chilli chicken to start [although a handful of guests had melon due to dietary requirements] beef dinner or fish and chips for the main course and Eton mess or chocolate fudge brownie with white chocolate ice cream for dessert. In the evening, we opted for a BBQ – which had to be moved inside due to bad weather, but was thoroughly enjoyed, nonetheless.

Did you book a stay close by?

Yes, nearly all our guests stopped over at Bawtry Hall’s sister venue, The Crown Hotel, which is right around the corner. It was great because the next morning we got to spend our first day as husband and wife with all our family and friends and it meant that our guests were able to enjoy our wedding until the very end, without having to worry about transport home. It was also nice that the bar is open 24 hours, which was the perfect pitstop for a post-wedding toast. The bridal suite was especially beautiful. What would say to other couples thinking of planning a wedding at Bawtry Hall?

DO IT! You will not be disappointed. We looked at so many venues and Bawtry Hall was in a league of its own. As well as the beautiful venue and grounds, it also makes your wedding day when the staff are more like friends – we even made sure the bar staff joined us on the dance floor. It could not have been more perfect if we tried.

Thank you to everyone who made our day so special, it was the best day of our lives and one we will never forget. We will be forever grateful to all the staff at Bawtry Hall and the Crown Hotel and will definitely be back to celebrate our one-year anniversary. Lots of love Mr & Mrs Hayes x Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk 49

Think winter, think boots THE SHOE ROOM IN DONCASTER HAS FINE SPECIMENS TO KEEP YOUR FEET WARM, DRY AND, IMPORTANTLY, STYLISH. et’s face it: winter is approaching and with it comes wind, rain and snow-covered streets. Selecting the correct footwear for the colder months takes time and careful planning. As you update your wardrobe attire, your footwear should be updated to match and this means looking for footwear that is not only robust, but stylish, too. With the recent weather changes, the time to buy your winter footwear is now. Lucky, then, that The Shoe Room are on hand to bring your shoe rack up to speed. Winter boots are a staple for everyone’s wardrobes. Whether you’re hiking the hills, on your way to work or styling it up at a party. From Fairfax and Favour and Red Wing Shoes, to Barker, Loake and R.M Williams, Richard and Michelle – who are considered experts in their field – stock the best styles out there right now and are on hand to help you in finding your perfect pair, whether you visit the Priory Walk store or the newly opened store at The Wool Market. The brogue is a year-round essential, but for foul weather a standard leather sole doesn’t quite cut the mustard. Update it with a sturdy commando sole from brands such as Tricker’s however,

and it will save you from slipping whilst ensuring your feet look impeccable. If you’re looking for a suit-appropriate, winter-ready brogue, then a sleek wingtip – complete with rubber sole – is the perfect fit. For those cold winter weekends, a rugged pair of Derby brogues would make a fine choice, and when combined with a Goodyear storm welt, the constant battle against puddles will be your victory every time. For those days when you want your shoes to say it all, Cheaney’s version of the heavy country brogue boot are smart enough to be worn with slacks yet casual enough to be worn with denims. The Chelsea style never falls out of fashion and when updated for the colder months, will keep your feet dry in style. A polished pair teamed with a suit and tie is a dapper addition, or you can match them with a good pair of jeans and you’re ready in no time at all. “What does great winter footwear mean to you?” asks Michelle. “Is it a pair of boots that becomes the backbone to your cold-weather wardrobe, or is it more about finding a pair of affordable shoes that still turn heads as you navigate winter’s unpredictable climate? “Warmth and waterproofing are of

course key, and good grip on the sole is paramount. After that, it depends on what you’ll be using your footwear for. Some of the best boots ever made were first designed for people to wear in factories and shipping yards. The steel toe caps may not have survived the fashion crossover, but many other features have: waterproof materials, padded ankles, high-grip soles and cosy linings. Why wouldn’t you want those things for your feet when it’s freezing outside? We stock something to suit every style and budget this season and beyond.” Investing in quality footwear will give you a firm foundation upon which you can build the rest of your winter wardrobe, and – most importantly – keep your feet warm and dry when the temperature falls. Whether your style is more rakish or relaxed, stay bold in colder climes with a little help from The Shoe Room. Take a walk on the wild side HONEYMOONS COME IN ALL SHAPES AND SIZES. RACHEL MARTIN HAS SOME CHOICE DESTINATIONS FOR ALL TYPES OF COUPLES.

trip to Paris with a room overlooking the Eiffel Tower, a suite in Hawaii with a hammock and views of the sunset – there are certain images that immediately spring to mind when the word honeymoon is mentioned. And while these both sound absolutely dreamy, most couples are looking for something a bit more personal. Whether you’re a foodie, an animal lover, a spiritual seeker, or just want to be a beach bum, there’s a honeymoon destination for every kind of couple.

A

56 Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk

The High-Powered Corporate Couple You and your spouse are high on ambition and low on free time. You don’t understand what a free night would look like. You’re constantly working to get ahead, and when you finish all your tasks, you’re hitting up networking events and making new connections. When your wedding is over, all you’ll want to do is collapse on a beach together and relax to the max. Recommendation: All you need is a beach and a steady stream of tropical drinks with tiny umbrellas – an all-inclusive resort is going to be your happy place. Consider Turks and Caicos, which is on the rise as a hot spot thanks to its beautiful resorts and white sand beaches.

056 - 057 ESide Oct19_Layout 1 19/09/2019 15:13 Page 2

The Thrill-Seeking Couple You two are not happy unless you are testing your limits and chasing an adrenaline rush. You think staying in is an activity best served with old age. You are young, and you want to take advantage of your youth and live life to its fullest. If a vacation destination has zip-lining and bungee jumping, that’s where you’ll jet to. Recommendation: Belize has become a thrill-seeking mecca in Central America. Travel there for exotic landscapes like the rain forest and volcanoes. You won’t be bored or disappointed with this honeymoon destination.

The Creative-And-Cultured Couple Your creative juices are what drive the two of you. You’re the type of couple that thrives on concerts and museums. You feel your best when you’re consuming all types of art. You live in a city, and when you travel, you’re most comfortable in the same environment. You’re constantly looking for new inspiration and travel is your favourite way to find it. Recommendation: You’ll be happiest trekking to a country with a storied culture. Try an immersive trip across Spain, where you can take in the flamenco of Barcelona, the architecture of Madrid and – of course – a lot of red wine.

Nacional del Prado, Madrid

The Social Couple The couple that parties together, stays together. That is the motto of your relationship. You relish the inside jokes that only a night of drinking can provide. The wedding toasts at your reception are going to be hilarious and bawdy, but you’d have it no other way. You’ll need a honeymoon destination that fits the bill and provides the perfect setting for even more outrageous stories. Recommendation: Could any destination be more fitting for you than Playa d’en Bossa, Ibiza? The beaches are beautiful, and the parties are plentiful. You’ll have stories galore after just one day.

Three, two, one... THE COUNTDOWN TO YOUR WEDDING BEGINS NOW... KATERINA VYURKOVA LOOKS AT THOSE LAST-MINUTE THINGS THAT ENSURE YOUR DAY RUNS SMOOTHLY. our wedding day will always be one of the most cherished events in your life, as the memories will continue warming your heart up each time you will flip through a photo album or look back at Facebook ‘Memories’ several years after you gave your vows. The preparation for the magical day can sometimes be extremely overwhelming. The entire process can take anything between two weeks and two years to complete, as each couple has different needs and wishes, ranging

from wanting to throw an extravagant party to deciding on a simple exchange of rings at the local register office. The length of time needed will also depend on whether there will be any unforeseen circumstances, such as a trusted photographer cancelling the photoshoot out of nowhere, or the time available to get ready being extremely limited, which is usually the case in our busy world. While leaving as much time as possible for a stress-free preparation process is undoubtedly the preferred option, it is not always possible to start

thinking about what kind of font will be on your guests’ invitations 12 months in advance. Needless to say, some of the most essential items such as wedding dress and suit are rarely booked several days before the event. Taking into account that the attire is probably the very first thing a couple would think about the moment a conversation about the wedding begins, it probably plays a major role in setting the timeframe for preparation at three months to leave enough time to find the perfect outfits.

Three months before: Try and sort out all the legalities straight away. In England and Wales, you need to notify the register office or the priest at least 28 days in advance. After you’ve sorted that out, it’s time to seriously think about your guest list, because the total number of your closest friends and family could either be 10 or 300. Depending on the number that comes out on your list, the next largest point to tick off from your to-do list is the venue. Over 11,300 governmentapproved venues are patiently waiting for you to pick from, so better start thinking early about what kind of weather will be on your planned day, as soaking under the rain in the middle of a breathtaking field may be the last thing you would want. Don’t forget about figuring out the venue for the post-ceremonial party, and some thorough researching can land you with just one location for both the party and the ceremony. Once that’s done, it’s time to move onto the theme, which can be as unique as your heart desires. It is also the perfect time to start thinking about the colour theme for the bridesmaids’ dresses to avoid choosing their least favourite colours. Also, remember to take care of the entertainment, as it might take a bit longer than you expect to decide what heart-throbbing song you want to sway to with your loved one and what music you want your guests to dance to. As you’ve already begun thinking about the theme, it also won’t hurt to start dealing with all the menus and decorations from the very start. Photographers and videographers should also be taken care of as soon as possible, as you never know how busy they are with running between weddings.

Two months before: Would you like an edible mini sculpture of a bride and a groom romantically holding hands on top of a strawberrydecorated chocolate sponge cake? If yes, then the sooner you deal with the wedding cake, the better. The next couple of months will be filled with careful planning of the tiniest details, which can be as small as booking a florist to get an aromatic bouquet to throw to the bridesmaids. The honeymoon arrangements that will take you and your soulmate onto a

Two weeks before:

paradise adventure might also take a while to decide on. Finally, for your hen and stag parties to be unforgettable in the positive sense of the word, it is better to avoid planning them in the very last moment. Other important aspects such as finding the perfect wedding rings, organising gifts for the helpful guests and calling up those who have not yet responded to invitations should also be taken care of a couple of months in advance.

‘Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue’ is a sweet tradition that can be followed not only by the bride, but also by the groom to make sure that nothing can go wrong in your marriage by pleasing the superstition that is as old as time. The scheduled date for your hen and stag parties should also take place somewhere around this time just in case they are days-long vacations, as you will have to use all the time you can to look fresh for the wedding day once all the partying will come to an end. When it comes to the wedding speeches, avoid scheduling a particular date and follow the flow of your emotions. Once you are ready to write the words of love down, don’t waste a minute to pour your heart onto the paper.

One month before: The next 30 days will be spent ensuring that everything runs absolutely smoothly on the special day. Questions like ‘What time does everything start and end?’, ‘What time should the taxi pick us up and how many taxis should there be?’, ‘Do we want a limousine instead?’, ‘What does the on-the-day timetable look like?’ should all be answered in the last month before the wedding day. It’s also time to draw up a sitting plan for all the guests.

One day before: The next day will be all about you, and you will get to see all the preparations paying off. The best thing to do now is to relax your mind and body by taking a long bath and getting a good night’s rest even if your heart is pounding and you find it hard to fall asleep. Lastly, it’s time to acknowledge the pleasant fact that the great day has finally arrived and it is no longer just a dream. Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk 63

A local man has swapped cars for caravans as he takes up a new role with Yorkshire Caravans of Bawtry, the oldest and largest independent retailer of caravans, awnings and outdoor leisure accessories in the UK. Ian Bissell, from Kirk Sandall, Doncaster has been appointed as parts manager and joins the company bringing a wealth of experience from his career in parts and aftersales in the motor industry. “Joining Yorkshire Caravans of Bawtry is an exciting change in career direction for me and I’m really looking forward to the challenges that my new role will bring,” said Ian. “Whilst it is a similar industry there will be much to learn including the thousands of caravan parts that are available.” Ian has already identified areas for improvement to support the ongoing growth of the business which include the implementation of more efficient procedures to increase productivity, and to continue to provide a seamless operation between warranty, parts and service departments within the company. And, whilst Ian will clearly be focused on his new career he has also just completed, together with his friend, a personal three-month challenge – the restoration of a 19-seater minibus that has been turned into a camper van. And being a massive Formula One fan Ian took the camper van on its first overseas road trip to attend the Belgian Grand Prix. “We wish Ian well in his new role and know that the organisation and communication skills that he has will stand him in good stead to make a difference and be successful,” said Andrew Whittaker, managing director Yorkshire Caravans. “Parts is certainly one of our busiest departments but I am confident that Ian is the ideal candidate to take on the challenge and we look forward to a new and exciting phase in the business as we continue with our growth and development plans.” Yorkshire Caravans, Doncaster Road, Yorkshire DN10 6DG Tel: 01302 710366 / www.yorkshirecaravans.com

IN BRIEF

Fretwell Spa at Hellaby Hall Hotel opens

Empire opens landmark Doncaster building Empire Property Concepts has hosted the official opening the Grade II listed Danum House in the heart of Doncaster following its £9.3million conversion project. The Doncaster-based property development company has painstakingly and sympathetically converted the 1930s building into 78 one, two and three-bedroom luxury apartments over a two-year period. Guests attended a ribbon cutting ceremony with Mayor Ros Jones, and Empire founder and managing director, Paul Rothwell The Mayor said: “We are delighted that Empire Property are creating a lifestyle for people to allow them to live, work and play in Doncaster.” Paul Rothwell added: “We purchased the property in 2017. It was not a straightforward conversion given the age of the building, its varied history and Grade II status. It’s been a real team effort and we are proud to make this iconic Doncaster building part of the Empire portfolio. “As well as creating 78 much-needed new homes in Doncaster town centre, the building has provided jobs for around 200 tradespeople from 20 mainly local companies.”

Hellaby Hall Hotel hosted an open day for the launch of the new spa at the hotel. Over 200 guests visited the new spa area. All were given a goody bag on arrival with glass of fizz and canapes. The reception area and lounge has been transformed into a contemporary modern space and two relaxation rooms have been created one of which is ideal for groups. But the main edition to the new spa is the creation of the spa garden. A purpose-built area dedicated solely to spa guests offers sun loungers, deck chairs on a mini beach area, large rattan sofas, egg chairs and the highlight being the outdoor hot tub. The Fretwell Spa offers Day Packages from £75pp or overnight stays, the most popular of which being “Girls Night In” package with wine, dinner and even movies included.
