Drop into The Duck The family-run wine bar eatery has made a splash in Drakeholes.
uilt in the mid-18th century, The ivy-covered Duck at Drakeholes is a beautiful building, occupying a stunning rural spot overlooking the Chesterfield Canal. It’s a picturesque setting, with barges moored nearby and lots of gorgeous walks to discover. The local family, who also own The Station at Blaxton, have brought new life to the previously run-down building, which had been closed for ten years and was previously known as The White Swan. What they have created is a real destination venue. “We took a risk in purchasing the property which was boarded up,” said the owner. “But have taken on the challenge to refurbish the huge listed building. It‘s a building that deserves to be open, it must hold so many memories for people who have celebrated or visited over the years.” The first phase of renovations are now complete and you’ll find a charming eatery, snug and outdoor seating area. Phase two, due to be completed mid-November, will add a further snug with a big open fire, with the rest of the building renovaton to follow. The Duck is available to host whichever event you require. The Duck is open on Mondays for breakfast (9am12pm), all day brunch and lunch (12-4pm). It’s closed on Tuesdays but then re-open on Wednesdays for coffee and cake and afternoon tea. The latter is expertly made by a Great British Bake Off finalist. From Thursday to Saturday The Duck is open for breakfast, all day brunch, lunch and will be serving sharing platters as part of an evening menu. On Sundays you can enjoy breakfast from 9am-12pm and lunch 12-4pm. All food is freshly prepared using quality local suppliers. All food is complemented by a high-end drinks selection, which includes beers, wines, cocktails and more. You can even grab something to takeaway on a walk if you so wish. There is a good-sized car

‘A hidden gem and cultural oasis’ SITTING ON THE EDGE OF SHERWOOD FOREST, THE HARLEY GALLERY DOES THINGS A LITTLE DIFFERENTLY. f asked to conjure up an image of a contemporary art gallery most people would probably picture a stylish city building with stark white walls and an almost clinical atmosphere. The surroundings of The Harley Galley, however, are quite different. This award-winning modern building can be found in the midst of the 15,000-acre rural estate of Welbeck, on the edge of Nottinghamshire’s Sherwood Forest. It may be off the beaten track, yet it plays host to some of the biggest names in the art world. The gallery sits on the site of the historic estates former gasworks. Since opening in 1994, its walls have been graced by the works of many high-profile artists. These include Sir Peter Blake, Grayson Perry and Tracey Emin as well as David Hockney, Barbara Hepworth and LS Lowry, among many more. The Harley Galley also champions the work of many upcoming artists. This is in keeping with the aims of The Harley Foundation, which is a charitable trust that was formed to create spaces where the imagination can flourish. The Harley Foundation offers subsidised studio space to artists, designers, makers and conservation specialists. It was set up by Ivy, Duchess of Portland, in 1978 and remains at the heart of Welbeck’s historic Ducal estate, which has been home to the Dukes of Portland and their families since 1607.

Alfred Wallis, (1855-1942), Two Boats, circa 1930
Alongside the gallery is The Portland Collection, which includes an historic art collection and treasures collected by the Dukes of Portland and their families. Here, visitors can see a selection of fine arts and pieces that tell a story of the family who owned and lived within Welbeck Abbey in the heart of the estate. The collection includes the pearl earring that Charles I wore at his beheading and visitors can see works by artists including John Singer Sargent, George Stubbs, Sir Anthony Van Dyk, and Michaelangelo. Lisa Gee, director of The Harley Gallery, said: “Our visitors often describe us as a hidden gem and a cultural oasis, as there are no other galleries around us in this park of the UK. “At Harley our aim is to make everyone feel welcome, whether they are experts or people looking to be entertained and taken out of themselves. There’s been a lot of talk about how art and creativity is essential for our mental health and well-being and since the pandemic that’s never been truer. “We aim to offer exhibitions and activities which bring joy and enjoyment and offer a space away from peoples’ day-to-day. Seeing the world through different artist’s eyes, looking at art which describes other people, places and experiences can help us understand the 14 Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk
world and help make new connections. “It’s as simple as bringing a smile to a visitor’s face, a sense of shared humanity, and it’s a chance to see and try something new.” The Harley Gallery is currently showing a series of exhibitions from The Jerwood Collection of modern and contemporary British art. The year-long collaboration is the collection’s first ever residency and first time it’s been seen in the Midlands. Coast, Country and City is the second exhibition in the series and runs until 7 November. It features more than 50 works by artists including David Hockney, Edward Bawden, Catherine Yass and Paul Nash. “These landscape paintings predate the strange time of 2020,” said independent curator James Rawlin. “I’m interested in whether our experiences of the year changes how we view these landscapes. Not only this, how they differ from the artist’s original interpretation.” James’s selection invites the viewer to review their perceptions of coast, country and city. He questions whether the seaside and the coast, for example, are the same thing. The wild and windswept coasts of Cornwall, Scotland or East Anglia are often to be found cheek by jowl with the jaunty, cheeky world of the seaside but they are very different, he says.
Kindred Spirits opens on 19 November and runs through to 6 February 2022. Curated by charity Outside In, it features those who have self-identifed as ‘outsiders’ and have bypassed the traditional art world journey, while others are self-taught. Many show the creativity so long hidden in our communities. Works from The Jerwood Collection include the self-taught artist and Cornish fisherman, Alfred Wallis, who was wellknown for painting seascapes from memory. It also includes the uniquely talented Edward Burra and the mystical work of Alan Davie, as well as work by artists influenced by the genre, such as Rose Wylie. Lisa Gee added: “Kindred Spirits is a triumphant celebration of artists connected by a creativity realised outside of the mainstream and the art world at large. This intergenerational and intercultural offering is a testament to the power of art to resonate, and to exist beyond the definition and acceptance of anyone but its maker.” The Harley Gallery is also well know for its annual art market, which has been held in November for the past 20 years. This year, however, it will be breaking with tradition and holding an extended series of pop-up markets on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from 17 November through to Christmas.

Go Big – How to Fix Our World by Ed Milliband 18 October Cast Doncaster www.castindoncaster.com Good news: the solutions to our problems already exist. Great news: a once-in-a-generation appetite for change means we can make them happen. The challenges we face are daunting, but in Go Big, Ed Miliband shows that the scale of what is possible is far greater. We are at a rare moment in history when people everywhere see the need for big change. Meanwhile, practical and proven ways exist for tackling everything from inequality to the climate crisis -if you know where to look and have the courage to think big. Ed Miliband has captured the imagination in his awardwinning hit podcast Reasons To Be Cheerful, which discovers brilliant people all around the world who are successfully fixing problems, transforming communities and pioneering global movements. From a citizens’ assembly in Mongolia to the UK’s largest cycle network in Greater Manchester, from flexible working in Finland to the campaign for the first halal Nando’s in Cardiff, Go Big draws on the most imaginative and ambitious of these ideas to provide a vision for how to remake society. The future is not yet written. It’s our job to write it. Go Big shows us how.

IN BRIEF
BHG is crowdfunding Bawtry Heritage Group (BHG) need your help and support to complete the Heritage Visitor Centre & Changing Place Project. They have launched a crowdfunding site to raise just over £11,000. The main purpose of the current funding appeal is to raise the ‘third party contribution’ needed for BHG to comply with the grant body requirements and enable the complete build to be funded. “This is a real, and probably our only, opportunity to deliver this project which will be a valuable asset for the town and its community,” said John Linsley. “It will improve the ‘gateway’ image of the town, provide a community hub facility, facilitate the dissemination of information on the history and heritage, help enhance visitor numbers and make our town a more inclusive place for all.” Support doesn’t have to be just financial but could include offers of materials, equipment and/or voluntary labour for the build. If anyone would prefer to just donate rather than pledge on the Spacehive site, then this is also possible. Donations can be by way of cash, cheque or bank transfer. Contact either David Kirkham (01302 710899) or John Linsley (01302 374009) for bank details. Please reference payments with “Donation from (name)” Cheques can be sent to acting Treasurer David Kirkham at 15 Pemberton Grove, Bawtry, Doncaster DN10 6LR. Collection boxes can also be found in The Premier Convenience Store,Today’s Local and NISA Local, all in Bawtry. BHG are also hoping to organise two community fundraising events in the town in October for the whole family. A ‘themed’ games event on Sunday 3 October and a ‘fun’ Halloween event on Sunday 31 October – so please make a note in your diaries, look out for further information, and try to come along on the days. Visit www.spacehive.com/bawtryflushedwithsuccess to show your support.
‘Bun Run’ at Welbeck More than 300 runners and walkers joined together for the first ever charity ‘Bun Run’ on the historic estate of Welbeck. The event, which took place on Saturday 11 September, gave participants the chance to either run a 10k route or walk a 5k trail around the private 15,000-acre country estate. The ‘Bun Run’ was the first event of its kind and designed to raise funds for The School of Artisan Food’s charitable work. The not-for-profit organisation, which is based in Welbeck, is dedicated to helping people of all skills levels learn about food production. So far almost £900 has been raised by the event. This will help fund bursaries that will provide opportunities for more people to access training in food production. The School works closely with local voluntary groups and enterprises to support the local community, including unemployed people and refugees. The Bun Run was organised by SBR Events, who carefully monitored numbers in the lead up to the event. After the event, one participant, Natalie Horrex, said: “We were very lucky to run this course, with it being the first event held there. The grounds are stunning!” 46 Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk
Miss Doncaster finds comfort in charity project Reigning Miss Doncaster Emma and Luke GB Emma Garbutt has found a light at the end of the tunnel by starting her own charity project after losing her best friend, Luke, just months after reaching the Miss Great Britain finals. The Kindness Drive collect and distribute ‘home comfort’ items to Teenage Cancer Wards around Yorkshire. “There were times when Luke would be taken into hospital with no notice and would worry about other people having to bring him the things he wanted or needed, I know sometimes it would make him feel as though he was losing independence,” she said. “I want to make sure that in future young cancer patients can have the option to grab what they need whilst on the ward without having to have somebody else choose for them or go out shopping for them.” The Kindness Drive welcomes donations from the public. You can contact them via their social media @thekindnessdrive or email thekindnessdrivedonations@gmail.com. Emma personally offers to pay for postage of any donations or collects them herself if possible. The project also has an Amazon wish list where you can choose needed products to be sent directly to The Kindness Drive HQ. Emma also has an active fundraising page with all donations going directly to the Teenage Cancer Trust – www.justgiving.com/Emmajadegarbutt
Wayne takes flight Award-winning film maker and multi media specialist Wayne Sables will be taking flight with his latest commission. Doncaster is one of the best places in the country to see a murmuration of starlings, the celebrated mass flight that creates extraordinary patterns in the autumn sky. And it’s that unique natural phenomenon that Wayne will be aiming to capture in a new work for Doncaster community arts group Right Up Our Street. Central to the commission will be a six foot starling sculpture that will be placed in the grounds of Doncaster Minster from 24-28 November. Wayne will then use projection mapping techniques to bring the sculpture to life. “The theme of the installation will be community and the starlings, flying as they do in close formation, are the absolute essence of what community is all about,” said Wayne. “The projection mapping will feature Doncaster people and voices talking about what makes community for them. “This is quite unlike anything I have done in the past and I am really excited to be able to bring this project to life and celebrate a unique Doncaster natural feature and also the town’s great community spirit.”
