Scott Dixon is the country’s only trainer to be based at a racecourse

elcome to September issue of Eastside, which is our Cazoo St Leger Festival special. Ahead of the four day festival, which runs from 8-11 September, we’ve been looking at some early contenders that could take Doncaster by storm. We look back at some key moments in Leger history and the names that will be long associated with the world’s oldest Classic horse race. Our chief racing writer Rob Plumbridge also introduces some of the jockeys to look out for across the festival. Locally-born trainer Scott Dixon has a fondness for his ‘home’ course and spoke to Eastside about his training facility just down the A1 at Southwell. We also spoke to Doncaster Racecourse’s executive director Rachel Harwood about what she’s looking forward to at the festival this year. Away from horse racing, we have your usual mix of food, fashion, home and motoring.

ST LEGER

A moment in St Leger time FROM HUMBLE ORIGINS TO ROYAL WINNERS, ROBERT PLUMBRIDGE OFFERS A BRIEF HISTORY OF SOME OF THE BIGGEST MOMENTS IN THE ST LEGER. he world’s oldest classic flat race takes place this September at Doncaster Racecourse. First run in 1776, it’s a race that is steeped in history. Here we spin through 245 years of the Doncaster St Leger and its unforgettable moments.

T

1776: St Leger established In the late 18th century, the first recorded running was on Cantley Common on 24 September 1776 and the event was won by a filly owned by the event’s organiser, the Second Marquess of Rockingham, named Allabaculia.

1939-1945: The War Years The turbulence of World War II was widely felt in the racing community. The St Leger was greatly affected having to be cancelled in 1939 when war broke out across Europe. The following year the race had to be held at nearby Thirsk in November, before following editions of the race in Manchester (1941), Newmarket (42-44) and then finally in York in 1945 before being restored to its rightful home.

1970: Triple Crown moment This was a pivotal moment, not just for the St Leger but for racing itself due to one horse; Njinsky. In British Flat racing the coveted ‘Triple Crown’ for colts (three-year-old male horses) takes in the 2000 Guineas, the Epsom Derby and finally the St Leger. By June 1970 Njinsky had gone on to land the first two races in the Triple Crown and headed to Doncaster as the race favourite for the St Leger. He duly obliged and wrote his name in history under a great ride from the legendary jockey Lester Piggott. The feat has not been repeated by any horse since.

1977: A Royal Winner Her Majesty The Queen is well known in the racing world for her support of the

Sport of Kings. She’s owned many horses during her time as monarch and won some of the most coveted prizes in the sport. In 1977 it was her turn to win the St Leger with her horse, Dunfermline, trained by Dick Hern and ridden by Willie Carson. There was an extra special cheer among the Doncaster crowd to celebrate the royal winner.

1997: A sombre St Leger The 1997 St Leger was run against the backdrop of the devastating news that Diana, Princess Of Wales had tragically died. In an understandably quieter atmosphere than usual, the race was won by Silver Patriach, a grey horse who had been narrowly beaten in the Epsom Derby that year.

2012: Camelot put to the sword Master trainer Aidan O’Brien had guided superb colt Camelot to success in the 2000 Guineas and Epsom Derby that year, making him the first horse to attempt to win the Triple Crown since Nijinsky in 1970. He started a shortpriced favourite for the Classic. However,

the party was spoiled by Encke, who Camelot failed to reel in in the final stages. O’Brien would later blame himself for not running a pacemaker in the race.

2015: Controversy aplenty Simple Verse, the only filly in the race, was first past the post, a head in front of Bondi Beach, but the placings were then reversed in the stewards’ room after the panel decided that Simple Verse had caused sufficient interference to Bondi Beach. On appeal from connections of Simple Verse the decision was reversed later that year.

2017: David overcomes Goliath Similar to 2012, Aidan O’Brien had a short-priced favourite who for many pundits, tipsters, and racing fans was close to a sure thing for the big one. However it was 22/1 outsider Harbour Law who would spoil the party, recording a first Classic success for trainer Laura Mongan and ridden by George Baker. Safe to say there were a few losing betting slips littering the racecourse floor after that result. Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk 15

ST LEGER

Legends of the Leger CERTAIN NAMES ARE SYNONYMOUS WITH THE WORLD’S OLDEST CLASSIC. ROB PLUMBRIDGE PICKS OUT SOME OF THE FAVOURITES. he Doncaster St Leger is the oldest of the British Classic races. A history which goes back to 1776, from humble beginnings of a two-horse race, to the Group 1 prestige we see today. There’s certainly been many legends, both equine and human, to have taken part in the race. We’ve picked out some high-profile names from modern times:

T

Nijinsky There’s only one horse who has won the coveted Triple Crown in British racing in the modern era. Nijinsky. The almost impossible challenge of winning the 2000 Guineas, Epsom Derby and St Leger in one season had not been done in 35 years until Nijinsky, ridden by the legendary Lester Piggott, took out all three races in the 1970 season. It has not been repeated since. Nijinsky wrote himself in history that day, and was widely regarded as one of, if not the best racehorse in Europe in the 20th century. Certainly worthy of inclusion in this list.

Aidan O’Brien In the last 20 years the ‘Master of Ballydoyle’ Aidan O’Brien has trained a winner of pretty much every significant race in the British and Irish calendar. One of the nicest men in racing to boot, Aidan’s powerhouse stable is always very well represented on the big racedays. Doncaster is no different on St Leger day. Aidan has sent out the winner six times during his career, the last of those in 2018 with Kew Gardens. However, he is also part of the St Leger’s controversial folklore. Aidan had trained Camelot to victory in the 2000 Guineas and Epsom Derby during the 16 Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk

2012 season. That meant that he arrived in Doncaster bidding for an historic Triple Crown not won since 1970 by Nijinsky. His horse was beaten by 25/1 outsider Encke. However, the following spring Encke was banned from all racing after a failed drug test - somewhat marring the horses achievements. However a BHA spokesman at the time said that “we can be certain he was not under the benefits of substances” during the St Leger. Aidan will almost certainly have a runner this year, and it will be a surprise to absolutely nobody if he can’t make it lucky number seven.

HM The Queen Arguably horse racing’s most famous patron. Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II also goes down in St Leger history having owned a winner in the race! Back in 1977 she was the winning owner with a horse named Dunfermline, ridden by top jockey at the time (and I’m A Celebrity contestant) Willie Carson. The filly carried the famous purple, red and gold silks of the Queen to victory in two Classics – the St Leger and the Epsom Oaks. She started at odds of 10/1 for the race and beat red-hot favourite Alleged by one-and-a-half lengths.

Lester Piggott When you say the word ‘jockey’ two names may come to mind, depending on your age, Frankie Dettori and Lester Piggott. Lester’s impact in racing is stuff of legend. There’s not many records he doesn’t hold – and winning Classic races is what he did best in a career that spanned five decades. The St Leger is no different, the maestro notched up an incredible eight victories in the race in his career. His first at the age of 25 in 1960 aboard St Paddy and his last 24 years later in 1984 aboard Commanche Run. The most famous of these is of course Triple Crown winner Nijinsky.

n equine gale-force to be reckoned with is likely to hit Doncaster on St Leger day. Heading north from Newmarket, Hurricane Lane is likely to touch down on Town Moor on 11 September. Hurricane Lane, one of the most exciting three-year-old prospects in the British Flat racing, is being targeted at the big one at Doncaster, according to his trainer Charlie Appleby. He is eager to let his super-talented colt go for glory and cement his place in the history books in what is the final British ‘Classic’ flat race in Britain – the others are the 2000 Guineas and 1000 Guineas in May

“Hurricane Lane boasts a supreme record in his short career. Raced once in 2020, winning at Haydock, he has kicked on to win four out of five of his starts in the 2021 campaign.” and the Epsom Oaks and Epsom Derby in June. These races are for three-year-old horses and are traditionally for the very best the country’s racing ranks have to offer in that age group. The colts (males) can contest the 2000 Guineas and Derby, the fillies (females) can contest the 1000 Guineas and Oaks. Both sexes can take each other on in the St Leger The oldest Classic is the St Leger at Doncaster, having been first run in 1776. It has seen many talents over the years and is a race of both history and prestige. At 1m 6 furlongs it’s a unique test of distance, the longest race, and horses will have to run at the top level, which is what makes the race so intriguing. This year’s renewal is shaping up to be a vintage year. With Derby-winner and stablemate of Hurricane Lane, Adayar also potentially in the final line-up, it’s sure to be a race of quality. Hurricane Lane boasts a supreme record in his short career. Raced once in 2020, winning at Haydock, he has kicked on to win four out of five of his starts in the 2021 campaign. Only tasting defeat once, when third in the Epsom Derby won by the aforementioned Adayar – himself a

horse at the very top of the ranks. After the Derby, Hurricane Lane left these shores for Ireland to The Curragh where he won the Irish Derby showing not just his class, but his grit and determination to get up to win in the final strides of the race, beating Frankie Dettori and his mount Lone Eagle that day. Lone Eagle could reoppose at Doncaster. He then crossed the channel to France for the highly contested Grand Prix de Paris. This wasn’t such a close contest, and Hurricane Lane blew the field apart by six lengths on that occasion. It was clear that this was a horse of much class. Newmarket-based trainer Charlie Appleby has been very positive about

the inclusion of his horse at Doncaster: “Hurricane Lane has already won at Longchamp, so the likelihood is that he will be trained for the St Leger.” Speaking after his win in France he said: “He’s obviously been a very exciting horse to deal with and he’s only been beaten once in his life and that was in the Derby when I felt inexperience caught us out.Today’s performance has franked him as one of the best three-year-olds in Europe and he’s an exciting horse.” It’s not just his trainer who is a big believer in this horses ability. His jockey William Buick is perfectly placed to judge the horse’s talents: “He’s a horse with a fantastic constitution and is obviously blessed with ability as well. “This horse is a superstar. He really had the perfect race today, unlike at the Curragh. “The layout of the racecourse suited him, Even more so, he is a very relaxed horse in his head.” The confidence behind the horse is clear. And barring any injuries between now and raceday, Doncaster could see a true talent on its turf again.

Oisin Murphy

Frankie Dettori

The reigning two-time Champion Jockey has yet to win the St Leger, but with every season is riding more and more big winners. The Irishman is well known for not just his brilliance in the saddle, but his likeable persona and is a fans favourite on the racecourse. He’s having a brilliant 2021 is on course to become a three-time Champion Jockey.

We couldn’t compile a list of jockeys without adding Frankie. You name it, he’s won it. A future Racing Hall Of Famer, Frankie is the most famous jockey on the planet. Recognised as much for his brilliant riding as for his trademark flying dismount from a winning horse. A sight you have to see in the flesh. Frankie is no stranger to success in the St Leger having won the race an incredible six times!

William Buick Another man who is no stranger to success in the St Leger. The British-Norwegian has won the race twice in his career. He will have a brilliant chance to make it three this year as the very classy Hurricane Lane looks set to take his chance. William is number one jockey for the powerful Godolphin breeding and racing operation. He rides primarily for Charlie Appleby, a trainer who continues to rise to the very top of the game. William will be in extra good form no doubt having very recently got married to his wife Jane.

Tom Marquand Tom will always have fond memories of the St Leger having been his maiden career Classic success in 2020. A landmark every jockey treasures. Another rising force in the weighing room. Tom Marquand is riding more and more winners every season and rivalling his friend and colleague Oisin in the Championship. Expect to see much more of this young man in the coming years.

Hollie Doyle A revelation in the saddle last season saw Hollie’s surprise nomination for BBC Sports Personality Of The Year. Not only that but she registered enough votes to finish in third! Hollie’s career is growing from strength to strength and she recently added more Group 1 glory at Glorious Goodwood in July aboard her beloved Trueshan in the Goodwood Cup. Not only was her 2020 special in the saddle, she also got engaged to fellow jockey Tom Marquand. Truly racing’s golden couple. Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk 21

cott Dixon grew up around horses. He spent the majority of his childhood on horses and ponies, whether that was in the show ring, hunting or riding in the fields. It was perhaps inevitable that he would pursue an equine career as he got older but things didn’t quite work out the way he perhaps thought they would. Scott’s father, Paul, is a hugely influential figure in the world of racing as the chairman of the Horseman’s Group and the Racehorse Owners’ Association (ROA). He’s been a prolific owner throughout the years but Scott had no intention of following in his footsteps. “I actually wanted to be a jockey,” he recalls, as I caught up with him on a sunny day at Southwell racecourse, just outside Newark. “That, in hindsight, was probably wishful thinking as anyone who has seen my father would confirm. During my teens I shot up to 13 stone and that pretty much ended any dreams I had.”

S

Scott oversees the gallops at Southwell Racecourse

24 Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk

Undeterred, Scott quickly changed tack and set his heart on becoming a trainer and after stints working with the likes of Jeremy Glover, Mark Polglase and David Nicholls, he decided to go it alone, getting his licence in December 2011. Aged just 23, he became the youngest trainer in the country. “I set my stall out. I was lucky enough that my dad had a yard [Haygarth, near Retford],” he says. “He had a couple of solid trainers there and I learned from them and then went to a few other places. I learned such a lot working with excellent trainers. The experience I gained was invaluable.” He initially set up in his family’s yard before making the move to Southwell racecourse three years ago. The yard offers first-class training facilities adjacent to the track and includes three barns, turn-out paddocks, a state-of-theart lunging pen, horse walker and, importantly, exclusive use of the allweather racecourse and grass gallop.

“The guys at ARC (Arena Racing Company) approached me, they wanted to relaunch Southwell as a training centre,” Scott says of the move. “They’ve invested in the site and refurbished it all. We are one of the only, if not the only, operations actually physically based on a racecourse. It’s very common abroad, America, Australia for example, but it’s not as common over here.” And the investment in the racecourse doesn’t stop there. Multi-million pound plans are already in place to upgrade the fibresand all-weather surface ready for winter, enhancing the facilities even further. Being based at Southwell has its obvious advantages, not least the reduction in travel time and costs, but Scott’s horses benefit from being able to be physically taken into the racecourse, walked round the parade ring and getting a better feel to what they would experience on race day. It’s a 24-hour operation with each horse given the care they require and training regimes are tailored to fit around targeted races. “We try to get the horse to peak at the right time,” explains Scott. “Once you’ve got them fit and running, you don’t really have to do too much more. “Thoroughbreds are remarkably naturally fit compared to humans. You look at Olympians and they’ll be training for hours and hours and hours every day but horses need an hour’s exercise a day and that‘s it.” Although training for ten years, it was the move to Southwell that gave Scott one of his best memories in the sport, as he enthuses: “I’d been training at my family’s home, that’s all I’d ever known. When I came here and set this place up, it was a new chapter a new start. “We had an open day, we’d literally just moved the week before, had well over 100 people here, then went racing. The first runner we had we won, and the following race we won too, so we had two runners, two winners.” Throughout Scott’s career he’s had great success at some of the finest tracks around the country, including Ascot and Epsom where he had the highest strike rate in the country. Southwell, perhaps unsurprisingly, has been a happy hunting

ground with around a third of career winners coming at the track, Stand-out horses include Crosse Fire, who won 14 of his 16 races at Southwell, and Sir Geoffrey, a now retired racehorse who left the sport with 21 wins in 164 starts. But if Scott had to pick his favourite winner, though, it would be one much closer to home. “My favourite was when I won the Brocklesby [Stakes at Doncaster Racecourse] with a horse called Cock Of The North [in 2014]. It was always a race, growing up, that I loved watching so to get a horse to win that for the first time that early in the season really means something.” As memorable as that win was, unfortunately Scott wasn’t there to see the two-year-old romp home. “I was usher at a wedding and couldn’t get out of it,” he laughs. “I knew the horse had a real chance as well so I’d had a big bet on it and the owners had too. I actually watched the race sat on a pew in church. I was starting to get agitated – they were literally signing the register at the time – and ran up to my wife, who was a bridesmaid, going ‘it’s won, it’s won!’. She told me to sit down and be quiet! “It wouldn’t be the richest race I’ve won but it’s definitely my favourite. He’s probably the best horse I’ve ever trained, he went on to some top races as a twoyear-old.” As his local course, he has great affinity to Doncaster and has enjoyed recent success there too. “We’ve done really well recently,” he beams. “We have a horse, Giogiobbo, who won three races in two weeks and of the last two of those wins, they came a day apart. A lot of my owners are local to Doncaster so like to get. We’ve had some great runners and is somewhere we certainly like to target.” Which brings us nicely to this year’s St Leger. At the time of writing, Scott has one horse running at the festival; Candy Warhol will be competing in the sixand-a-half furlong Weatherby’s Scientific £200,000 2-Y-O Stakes on Thursday 9 September. And what of the big race on Saturday? “If I’m going to give you a tip, I’m going to go for the easy option and go for Hurricane Lane for the win,” he

laughs. “And I’m backing Lone Eagle each way, he was desperately unlucky not to win the Irish Derby. I’ve gone easy, I’ve just took the favourites!” This year’s St Leger Festival will be a completely different beast to last year’s event, which took place without any crowds due to Covid restrictions. It’s something Scott can’t wait to see. “When we were going racing early on, it felt so strange with literally nobody there,” he says. “I’ve just been to York and there was a full crowd, that’s really what racing is about. Everyone who works in racing has really missed that side of it, it’s lovely to have it back.” Covid hit home for Scott too, particularly with the months of uncertainty surrounding racing which made it virtually impossible to prepare horses for races when they were finally given the go ahead, as he recalls: “It was really difficult to know what to do because the goalposts got moved so

frequently. The poor owners, they’ve got these horses but they can’t compete in the sport they love, they’ve literally had to pay for horses that couldn’t run. We probably lost 20 per cent of our ownership during that time but we’ve built back up and built back better, is that what they say?” Life goes on, as they say, and Scott is already planning for the future. “The obvious thing is we just want more horses,” he concludes. “The more horses we get, the more chance we have of getting a really good one. We’ve got the option of adding a further 20 stables, which we’re looking at doing in the next few months. Filling them would be our target and I would like to be training 60-80 horses in the next couple of years.” The only way is up for Scott and his team and don’t be surprised to see him racking up more winners down the line. It seems the career change worked out ok after all. Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk 25

ST LEGER

It’s good to be back ONE PERSON WHO CAN’T WAIT FOR THE RETURN OF CROWDS TO THE CAZOO ST LEGER FESTIVAL IS RACHEL HARWOOD, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR AT DONCASTER RACECOURSE. whole place once we get going on the Wednesday.

You must be delighted that St Leger can go ahead in a more familiar guise?

We are really pleased to welcome people back to the Cazoo St Leger Festival. It really is the annual highlight of our year at the racecourse. It has been a difficult 18 months for everyone across society, so we hope that the meeting will give people the chance to enjoy an afternoon’s racing with friends and family. How important is it to have crowds back at Doncaster Racecourse?

It is hugely important. Whilst racing was able to continue behind closed doors since June 2020, it felt surreal watching the St Leger meeting last year without spectators. Racegoers give the event its atmosphere and magic, so we can’t wait to welcome people back to the meeting. How tough was it last year to host events with little or no crowds?

It was really tough with restrictions and guidance changing regularly. However, I’m very proud of how the team have reacted and adapted so that we could continue hosting race meetings behind closed doors as well as doing all the work to prepare for the safe return of spectators. What changes have you had to implement?

All of the new regulations have given us the opportunity to look at how we operate and make adaptations to a number of things including signage, of which there is plenty, to both offer guidance and reassurance to customers. What can visitors expect on the day? 26 Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk

What’s your best Leger memory?

Visitors can expect to enjoy their day at the races! Our team will be undertaking a lot of work behind the scenes to make sure that we, for example, maintain sanitizing stations around the site alongside regular cleaning rotas inside and out. Otherwise, we hope our visitors can relax and concentrate on enjoying the action on the track! How can you reassure those who are unsure about attending?

Understandably some people are nervous about attending events. Anyone looking for reassurance can look at our website for more details on the steps we have taken since reopening to the public. What kind of crowds are you expecting?

We are hoping to welcome crowds similar to previous years. The appetite in the town and wider region to come racing has certainly been strong, so we’re looking forward to having people back on site. What’s your favourite part of the festival?

I think it’s simply going to be seeing the Grandstand buzzing with excited racegoers and the atmosphere of the

This will only be my second Cazoo St Leger Festival meeting at the racecourse, so I’m going to have to say Tom Marquand’s win on Galileo Chrome. Tom is a fantastic young jockey and a really great guy to work with, so we were delighted for him to win his first Classic, even though the spectators sadly weren’t on site to witness it. And your worst?

Not a worst memory, as such, but just a sadness that we couldn’t share last year’s meeting with our regular racegoers and the fans who wanted to come and watch the race. I’m delighted that we’ll be able to rectify that this year. Which race are you particularly looking forward to?

The Cazoo St Leger Stakes is the obvious highlight, and whilst you can’t beat the big race for the anticipation that everyone will be feeling, I’m certainly going to be noting down the winner of the Champagne Stakes, which also takes place on the Saturday. It has been won in recent years by some fantastic young horses who have gone on to do excellently in their careers, which is always so exciting. Any tips for us?

I’ll stay away from offering any tips on the horses and just suggest that everyone that comes racing enjoys themselves, and has a fantastic time at the racecourse whatever it is you’re most looking forward to, the fashion, hanging out with friends or, of course, the racing.

Back to school A NEW BAR AND BRASSERIE IN ARKSEY HAS HIT THE GROUND RUNNING, WRITES RICHARD ABBEY. sing an old 17th century school as a convenience store seems such a waste, but that’s what you’d have found in Arksey, a small village on the outskirts of Doncaster, if you’d driven through a year or two ago. Thankfully, three gentleman saw its potential and set about transforming it into something special. David Aldred, Jonathan Stanliand and Andrew Miller joined forces to open a tea room, bar and brasserie in this charming hamlet and have hit the ground running since opening in April. Serving breakfast and coffee, lunch, afternoon tea and evening meals, it has quickly become a fantastic addition to the area, particularly when the sun shines so you can sit and soak up the rays in the stunning Italianate courtyard, Aperol Spritz in hand. The School House, as the venue is called, is an apt name for the building which was built in 1683. It’s a fabulous old stone dwelling with vaulted ceilings, original parquet floors and bags of character. Enter through the main door and you’ll find a bar area to the right and a dining room to the left with banquette seating and a grand fireplace filled with a wood-burning stove. Navy and cream walls are complemented by teal seating, wooden tables, soft furnishings and stylish wallpapers and artwork. Beyond the bar, which is home to all manner of fizz, wine, spirits, cocktails and draught beers, is a cosy snug called the ‘Johnnie Walker Library’, which in turn leads outside to a marquee and the courtyard.

My wife and I took our seats in the dining room and perused a menu which included small plates, bistro-style dishes, burgers and a good selection of specials. We’d brought our children along too, whom were offered a menu with dishes including southern fried chicken, cumberland sausages, fish fingers and pizza baguette (all £6.95), but they were adamant they wanted a burger so chose from the reasonably-priced adult menu instead. Although we made them wait

while we sampled the delicious-sounding starters. Organic mussels (£5) - for her - came from the regular menu and were served with a white wine, onion and parsley sauce and toasted sourdough bread. Served on a plate rather than a bowl, the half dozen or so mussels were some of the biggest I’d ever seen and plump, meaty and full of flavour. The sauce was particular moreish and my wife was thankful for the generous slices of bread so she could mop up every last drop. I turned to the specials and chose panfried scallops, cauliflower purée, crispy chorizo, black pudding and parsnip crisps (£10.95). It was a dish that wouldn’t have looked out of place in a high-end restaurant, was beautifully presented and with a great balance of flavours and textures. The scallops themselves were cooked perfectly. I stuck to the specials for my main course and despite tempting choices such

as slow braised lamb shank and pan-fried cod tikka masala, I chose the jerk chicken burger (£12.95), which was served with apple slaw and rustic fries. It was a good choice with the spice and smokiness of the chicken offset by the sweetness of the slaw. The chips were very good too, clearly homemade, with that great balance of crispy outsides and fluffy insides. My other dining companions all went for the wagyu beef burgers options; the

little ones (if you can call them that) choosing a classic £10) and cheese and bacon burger (£12) whilst my wife went for the surf ‘n’ turf option (£14), all served with rustic chips and a kaleslaw.. Now, you perhaps wouldn’t expect to find king prawns, chorizo and peppercorn sauce on top of a burger but that we did and you know what, it worked, not just taking us by surprise but the staff too. “It’s something we thought we’d try but were unsure if it would work but it’s been one of our most popular burgers since opening,” said Jonathan. It seems customers can’t get enough surf ‘n’ turf. Desserts were a stretch too far for my wife and I but my children were keen to sample the homemade delights and headed over to the blackboard to see what was on offer. They settled on a warm, gooey chocolate brownie and a slice of lemon cheesecake which my daughter declared ‘very lemony’ - the perfect end to a lovely meal. It’s still early days for The School House but on this evidence, they’re definitely on the right track. Open from 9am every day, you can drop by at your convenience. Harnessing creative talents STUDENTS ARE ENCOURAGED TO FLOURISH IN THE ARTS AT QUEEN ETHELBURGA’S. estled in 220 acres of the artistically inspiring North Yorkshire countryside, Queen Ethelburga’s (QE) is an excellent rated Collegiate (ISI 2019), welcoming students from three months to 19 years. QE has a very dedicated approach to the Arts across the Collegiate, believing that they are a key ingredient to healthy, happy and creative students. They provide their students with the expertise, the environment and passion to enable students to develop and succeed. QE’s rural location provided the perfect back drop for creative Year 12 student Leon to indulge his passion for photography. He commits every weekend to exploring the medium of photography in extraordinary depth expending the curriculum beyond his basic studies. Using their historic and traditional Armorial Hall, built by renowned York architect Walter Henry Brierley, Leon took a rare quiet moment to set up a photoshoot of fellow student Valentina. McQueen can be seen in the styling. This creative pursuit took place as part of the Queen’s Academy, a weekend extra-curricular provision, allowing students to realise and extend their ideas and creative passion. Head of Creative Arts, Helen Woodcock, established this provision for students, supported by their drive to express creativity in all opportunities. Helen said: “The Queens Academy is very much student led. Our excellent facilities are very much in demand by both our day and boarding students. This

allows them the time and space to be able to work on their own projects both independently, and with staff support. We have also been able to offer an amazing set of weekend workshops as well as master classes and talks from industry professionals. “It was great to see Leon use this as a creative opportunity to produce such inspirational work.” The Creative Arts Department at QE combines the skills and resources of the Art and Design department and the Design and Technology department to offer a fantastic learning experience and a range of subject routes that go beyond the traditional subject choices. Facilities include dedicated spaces for fashion, fine arts, 3D design and design technology workshops as well as in photography, a dedicated studio space and darkroom. MOTORING

Welcome return

THIS MONTH SEES THE RETURN OF AN ICONIC BRAND, WRITES RICHARD ABBEY.

Classic racing brand Lotus have released their first road car in what seems like an age. The Emira builds on the legacy of the Elise, Exige and Evora and represents a quantum leap forward for the Norfolkbased company. A mid-engined premium sports car, the Emira has been developed on a new lightweight bonded aluminium chassis, technology pioneered by Lotus and which remains an intrinsic part of the company’s sports car DNA. It will be available with a choice of two petrol engines, a Lotus-honed 3.5-litre V6 and a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder ‘i4’ from the performance division of Mercedes-Benz. The first cars will hit the road next spring with prices starting at £60,000.

Design statement The success story of Vauxhall’s Astra began over 40 years ago. Now, there’s an all-new eighth generation model about to hit the roads. The new Vauxhall Astra will launch this year as a sporty five-door with a low-slung look and yet more space than its predecessor. The new Vauxhall Astra is also a design statement for the brand. Dynamic as never before, with sheer, taut surfaces, detoxed of superfluous elements and with the new brand face – the Vauxhall Vizor. With the next compact class generation,Vauxhall shows that the Astra is ready to define a new era. Vauxhall will offer the new Astra in two performance levels as a plug-in hybrid. In addition, there are versions with highly efficient petrol and diesel engines in combination with friction-optimised six-speed manual and eight-speed automatic transmissions.

Iconic engine From 0-62mph in 3.8 seconds, up to 180mph top speed, RS Torque Splitter and specific RS driving modes – the new Audi RS 3 offers driving dynamics of the highest calibre and the best numbers in its segment. Equipped with a 400PS five-cylinder engine, the highperformance unit delivers rapid acceleration with a highly intoxicating sound.Visually, the RS 3 demonstrates its sporty DNA with a widened body, RS sports exhaust system, and cockpit displays like those found in race cars. “There are fewer more iconic engines in the world than Audi’s 2.5 TFSI five-cylinder,” commented Director of Audi UK Andrew Doyle. “Now more powerful than ever before, and with class-leading performance figures to back up its striking new design, the introduction of the RS 3 Sportback and Saloon reinforce Audi Sport’s commitment to setting the benchmark in every segment.” The base price for the RS 3 Sportback is set at £50,900, while the RS 3 Saloon is listed at £51,900. 56 Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk

Two’s company Striking looks, exceptional handling, classical rear-wheel drive and a Goodwood Festival of Speed world premiere, will leave potential customers of the new BMW 2 Series Coupé in no doubt that this is a car set to excite and inspire. The new edition of the two-door model incorporates the new BMW design language to highlight a fresh, youthful feel with meticulously engineered and perfectly balanced driving attributes. Reaffirming its sector-leading status, the BMW 2 Series Coupé boasts rear-wheel drive, a six-cylinder in-line engine option and new equipment features that combine to underscore its standout sporting characteristics. Topping the range will be the all-wheel-drive BMW M240i xDrive Coupé, while customers will also be able to choose from four-cylinder petrol and diesel versions in the standard M Sport specification. Prices start from £34,980.
