ST LEGER

Runners and riders WHERE’S THE WISE MONEY GOING AT THIS YEAR’S ST LEGER? ROBERT PLUMBRIDGE LOOKS AT THE TOP CONTENDERS FOR THE 2019 PRIZE. apan’s latest win in the Juddmonte International Stakes at the York Ebor Festival was one that had everything, class, determination and true grit. In an epic battle with world’s highest rated Crystal Ocean, he ran all the way to the line to get up for victory. As a three-year-old he’s had a sensational year. Trainer Aidan O’Brien certainly knows how to win a St Leger. He’s claimed the famous prize on six separate occasions and has won the last two runnings of the race with fancied favourites. Should Japan line up this year, it’s hard to see the tide turning. The Royal Ascot winner comes with a big reputation since his third in the Epsom Derby, and looks the perfect type for the stamina test at Doncaster. However, for St Leger betting purposes, he might be a victim of his own success. Connections are likely to look towards the Prix de L’Arc de Triomphe in France in October. The toughness of his last race could well sway this decision as it may come too soon for the St Leger. It’s advisable to look elsewhere for Doncaster’s big prize, especially given the likely short odds of Japan. The same trainer will almost certainly have more than one runner in the final

J

Japan is trained by Aidan O’Brien, a regular winner at the St Leger

Classic of the season. And don’t be surprised to see front-runner Sovereign setting a fast pace out on his own. He employed those tactics to great effect in the Irish Derby and he’ll look to do the same here. This extra distance might find him out however, and he could be susceptible to latecomers in the finish. That form on the face of it is very strong, however he was given an extremely easy lead by the others early

on in the race on a track that suits frontrunning horses. Don’t expect it to be that easy at Doncaster and he’s probably and each-way bet at best. Trainer John Gosden’s knack for training a St Leger winner has been evident in recent years, with the Newmarket-based trainer having won race four times since 1996. And so that brings us to the main tip for the 2019 St Leger. The Great

“He beat some high-class contenders that day and it would seem that the horse is being aimed at the big one at Doncaster in September.” 16 Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk

Nayef Road produced a gutsy display in the Qatar Gordon Stakes at the prestigious Glorious Goodwood

Voltigeur Stakes at York has always been a traditionally string trial race for the St Leger and if the 2019 race is anything to go by, it has a very strong chance of throwing up another winner. Logician came into the race a second favourite, but after his performance at York he’ll be one tough horse to beat. With a field small in numbers but not in talent, he was stepping into a race much tougher than anything the three-year-old had faced before. However it was clear all the way from three furlongs out that none of his rivals had an answer to him. He’s a son of Frankel, arguably the greatest of all time,

and he’s certainly inherited some of that talent. The extra distance is sure to suit him judged on his York run. He rates as our number pick for the big one at Doncaster – betting slips at the ready! Could the St Leger be staying in Yorkshire? It would appear that Mark Johnston, who trains in Middleham, North Yorkshire, has a live contender on his hands after Nayef Road produced a gutsy display in the Qatar Gordon Stakes at the prestigious Glorious Goodwood meeting in August. He beat some highclass contenders that day and it would seem that the horse is being aimed at the big one at Doncaster in September.

Verdict: Although Aidan O’Brien has an embarrassment of riches coming into the final Classic of the season, Logician looked like a very special prospect at York and is almost certainly aimed at the race. We expect him to turn on the style come Leger time and win comfortably.

ST LEGER

Not to be missed A GUIDE TO ST LEGER WEEK: FIVE THINGS TO LOOK OUT FOR. BY ROBERT PLUMBRIDGE.

oncaster’s St Leger Festival not only hosts the world’s oldest classic flat race, there’s plenty of highlights to take in across the week. We’ve picked out some of the best bits the week has to offer at Yorkshire’s biggest week of racing.

D

22 Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk

Legends Race The week kicks off with the Leger Legends race, which will see some of racing’s retired stars get back into the saddle for charity. In aid of the Northern Racing College, Doncaster and Jack Berry House, a facility for injured jockeys rehabilitation, the race has been won by greats such as Sir A P McCoy and St Leger winner Joseph O’Brien. This year former champion jockey Kieren Fallon is set to compete.

ST LEGER

Irish-born Oisin Murphy will be battling for ‘Champion Jockey’

Ladies Day The horses aren’t the only fillies in competition on Thursday. Ladies Day sees the racegoers going all out in the fashion stakes! The Best Dressed Lady crown is one of the most competitive events of the whole week. Dress to impress. As well as high fashion, top quality racing, there will also be a DJ set from the one and only Melanie C, fresh from touring with the Spice Girls. Get the champagne on ice.

Silk Series Finale On Ladies Day it’s not just the female racegoers who are centre of attention. The Silk Series – a series of races for female jockeys run from May-September on Ladies Days across the country – culminates at Doncaster during St Leger week. On Ladies Day the champion will be crowned in front of the 15,000 or so racegoers, lifting The Tufnell Trophy. The past two seasons have been won by Megan Nicholls who is the daughter of famed National Hunt trainer Paul.

The battle for Champion Jockey continues The race is hotting up for the Champion Flat Jockey 2019. Northern-based Daniel Tudhope and Irish-born Oisin Murphy have set the season alight, with the championship set to go down to the wire. Both have registered over 100 winners this season, and the week at Doncaster could have a big influence on where the trophy ends up. The champion will be crowned in just a month’s time at Ascot on October 19, with the jockey who has recorded the most wins since 4 May landing the title. Whoever wins it will their maiden championship.

Final Classic The Final Classic of the season is not to be missed. See top class three-year-olds take each other on in a test none of them will have faced before in their career. The 1 mile 6 furlongs on Town Moor will test not only the Colts and Fillies stamina, but their class as well. Who will have what it takes to come out on top in the gruelling run in front of a raucous Donny crowd? Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk 23

ST LEGER

A moment in St Leger time FROM HUMBLE ORIGINS TO ROYAL WINNERS, ROBERT PLUMBRIDGE OFFERS A BRIEF HISTORY OF SOME OF THE BIGGEST MOMENTS IN THE ST LEGER. he world’s oldest classic flat race takes place this September at Doncaster Racecourse. First run in 1776, it’s a race that is steeped in history. Here we spin through 243 years of the Doncaster St Leger and its unforgettable moments.

T

28 Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk

1776: St Leger established In the late 18th century, the first recorded running was on Cantley Common on 24 September 1776 and the event was won by a filly owned by the event’s organiser, the Second Marquess of Rockingham, named Allabaculia.

ST LEGER

Bondi Beach caused controversy in 2015

“By June 1970 Njinsky had gone on to land the first two races in the Triple Crown and headed to Doncaster as the race favourite for the St Leger. He duly obliged and wrote his name in history.”

1939-1945: The War Years The turbulence of World War II was widely felt in the racing community. The St Leger was greatly affected having to be cancelled in 1939 when war broke out across Europe. The following year the race had to be held at nearby Thirsk in November, before following editions of the race in Manchester (1941), Newmarket (42-44) and then finally in York in 1945 before being restored to its rightful home.

1970: Triple Crown moment This was a pivotal moment, not just for the St Leger but for racing itself due to one horse; Njinsky. In British Flat racing the coveted ‘Triple Crown’ for colts (three-year-old male horses) takes in the 2000 Guineas, the Epsom Derby and finally the St Leger. By June 1970 Njinsky had gone on to land the first two races in the Triple Crown and headed to Doncaster as the race favourite for the St Leger. He duly obliged and wrote his name in history under a great ride from the legendary jockey Lester Piggott. The feat has not been repeated by any horse since.

1977: A Royal Winner Her Majesty The Queen is well known in the racing world for her support of the Sport of Kings. She’s owned many horses during her time as monarch and won some of the most coveted prizes in the sport. In 1977 it was her turn to win the St Leger with her horse, Dunfermline, trained by Dick Hern and ridden by Willie Carson. There was an extra special cheer among the Doncaster crowd to celebrate the royal winner.

1997: A sombre St Leger The 1997 St Leger was run against the backdrop of the devastating news that Diana, Princess Of Wales had tragically died. In an understandably quieter atmosphere than usual, the race was won by Silver Patriach, a grey horse who had been narrowly beaten in the Epsom Derby that year.

2012: Camelot put to the sword Master trainer Aidan O’Brien had guided superb colt Camelot to success in the 2000 Guineas and Epsom Derby that year, making him the first horse to attempt to win the Triple Crown since

Nijinsky in 1970. He started a shortpriced favourite for the Classic. However, the party was spoiled by Encke, who Camelot failed to reel in in the final stages. O’Brien would later blame himself for not running a pacemaker in the race.

2015: Controversy aplenty Simple Verse, the only filly in the race, was first past the post, a head in front of Bondi Beach, but the placings were then reversed in the stewards’ room after the panel decided that Simple Verse had caused sufficient interference to Bondi Beach. On appeal from connections of Simple Verse the decision was reversed later that year.

2017: David overcomes Goliath Similar to 2012, Aidan O’Brien had a short-priced favourite who for many pundits, tipsters, and racing fans was close to a sure thing for the big one. However it was 22/1 outsider Harbour Law who would spoil the party, recording a first Classic success for trainer Laura Mongan and ridden by George Baker. Safe to say there were a few losing betting slips littering the racecourse floor after that result.

2019: As open as ever This year’s race has a very open feel to it in the early entry stages. The obvious candidate for favourite would be Royal Ascot winner Japan, who has confirmed his early promise since a good third in the Epsom Derby earlier in the year. There is no shortage of contenders, with stablemate Sovereign having won an Irish Derby in July. Trainer John Gosden knows how to win this race and has early second favourite Logician set to take his place. Last month’s Glorious Goodwood also saw Yorkshire-trained Nayef Road put his hand up with victory on the Sussex Downs. It’s certain to be a high quality affair.

Love is in the hair WELL-KNOWN BAWTRY HAIRDRESSER, REBECCA DICKENSON, IS ABOUT TO OPEN THE DOORS ON A BRAND NEW SALON.

PROMOTION

ebecca Dickenson is a familiar name and face on the Bawtry hairdressing scene – and now she’s striking out on her own with a fabulous new salon in the heart of the town. It’s called Rebecca Dickenson Hair – and having established herself as a go-to hairdresser for all occasions in Bawtry, Rebecca has finally realised her ambition to celebrate her own achievements and the reputation she has worked so hard to cultivate. For many years Rebecca headed up a large team at a wellknown salon in Bawtry, winning many awards for her styling and enhancing her reputation as a wedding hair stylist. So it will be no surprise to learn that a key service on offer at her new salon will be wedding hair. Putting her 15 years of award winning bridal hair experience to good use, Rebecca offers a range of packages to suit every bride, from luxury insalon appointments to home or venue visits, a bespoke ‘AllDay Bridal Service and the ‘Full Bridal Party Package’. “Hair is the crown we wear every day and we are grateful to all of our clients throughout the year, she says. “But we feel especially privileged to be chosen to be part of someone’s wedding day, and we go above and beyond to ensure our brides feel cared-for and fabulous.” But it’s not just about weddings – Rebecca Dickenson Hair offers a fresh, expert look at hair for all occasions. This means they can accommodate everything from timeless and classic styling through to edgy, contemporary runway looks. Having decided to go it alone, Rebecca has found a suitably striking venue on Bawtry High Street for her new venture. Locals will instantly recognise it as the old Utopia building, a superb site known for its character and grand stature. The new salon will feature much of the building’s beautiful features while inside there will be a stylish, fresh look, making this a real fresh start for Rebecca and the perfect place for her to work ‘hair miracles’! "For a long time I tried to force myself to fit into a certain type of mould because I thought it was what everyone else wanted, but now I realise that the only person I can be is myself. My work is an extension of me, its my creative outlet

and my way to show the world who I am,” says Rebecca. “I am so exited to be designing my dream salon. Somewhere I get to celebrate everything I Eco product display love; romance, pink, sparkle and drama and everything that makes me, ME. I can't wait to share my new salon with all of my amazing clients, old and new, but in the mean time I’m still working my magic right here in Bawtry, just across the road from Rubies where I can keep a close eye on the all the progress across the road!"In the meantime, while finishing touches are being made to the new salon, you can find Rebecca over the road at Rubies, so you don’t have to miss out on her amazing blow dries until then. Always one step ahead of the trends, Rebecca is sparing no expense in bringing the latest techniques and tools to her salon, such as the Dyson Airwrap styler, heralded by Vogue as “the ultimate hair innovation we have been waiting for”. This fabulous piece of kit curls, wraps, smooths and dries without extreme heat, giving you the perfect bouncy blow dry. You can continue the good work at home between appointments, shopping Rebecca’s range of Olaplex and L’Oreal The Source products in salon. “I’ve been very picky about the brands I work with because my clients deserve the very best,” says Rebecca. And in case you hadn’t heard, going green is in. Rebecca’s championing an eco trend, offering clients a discounted rate if they return and refill their original The Source packaging. “I watched a programme about the devastating impact of single-use plastics and so really wanted to work with a brand that supported the environment by reducing waste,” says Rebecca. Christmas is coming YOU’LL FIND GIFTS, DECORATIONS AND MORE AT ETC. or over a decade, Etc…Etc…Etc has been offering residents of the 12th century market town of Bawtry, a unique and stylish collection of handmade cards, gifts, jewellery and home accessories. After working with Doncaster Council for over 27 years, Elaine Thorpe had always dreamt of owning her own shop that stocked unusual and design-led products. “I just got to a point and decided it was time to quit my job and follow my passion. I love my shops, customers and everything that I sell and couldn’t be happier that I took the plunge,” said Elaine. The business has two branches; one in Bawtry and a bigger branch at the Yorkshire Wildlife Park, but you don’t have to visit the animals to take advantage of the wide selection at the Wildlife Park branch. With its quirky and international range, Elaine and her team have worked hard to bring customers an irresistible collection of products. They’ve recently added a clothing area and increased their range of fashion accessories, now stocking bags, scarves, purses and clothing. Some of which you might recognise from the silver screen as their One Hundred Stars dressing gowns were featured in Mamma Mia 2.

“Etc is constantly growing and evolving. We have loyal customers who have been with us since day one and our Etc Bawtry Facebook page is getting busier too. Every week we get something new in the shop, to keep it fresh and exciting for our customers.” Those who like to begin their Christmas preparations early will also be delighted to find the most exciting and unusual range of decorations in the area. This year’s decorative themes include Jungle, Nursery Rhymes, Dogs, Riverbank, Ocean, Veg Garden and Bejewelled. And some unique Christmas baubles and decorations are already in store. You’ll find a unique selection of accessories from big brand names such as Emma Bridgewater, Lampe Berger, Jelly Cat, East of India, Parlane International and many more. They have everything from beautiful handmade cards by Five Dollar Shake, to gorgeously framed mirrors and clocks. When it comes to jewellery, you’ll find some contemporary pieces by Pilgrim and Danon, delicate charm bracelets by Joma, some bright and bold homemade pieces by Konplott, which you may well have seen former Strictly Come Dancing judge Darcey

Bussell sporting. Etc have recently launched their own brand which includes handmade cushions by Elaine in fabrics from top designers such as Ralph Lauren and Designers Guild, along with a selection of candles – Happy Ever After, Happy Birthday, Happy Times, Happy Home along with a selection of festive options, each with their own unique, memorable fragrance. Whoever you are buying for and whatever the budget, you’ll be sure to find the perfect gift. Elaine and her team provide the full package with a personal shopping and a gift wrap service to finish off your gorgeous gifts with a beautiful bow. “We pride ourselves on our customer service, we all love when we find the perfect gift for a customer. EATING OUT

The world on a plate RACHEL MARTIN IS SERVED UP A SUMPTUOUS GLOBE-TROTTING MENU AT THE CROWN HOTEL. hotel restaurant in reality should be a wonderful thing – you enjoy a delicious meal before the short walk to your room and settling down for the night. However, hotel restaurants rarely make people’s foodie bucket lists. I don’t know many people who travel out of their way to visit a restaurant attached to a hotel – but this is what makes The Crown Hotel so special, because people do. The Crown’s kitchen is headed up by Kaz, who is simply a wizard when it comes to food and quickly garnered praise for her archetypal menu of refined comfort food – combining flavours and a range of ingredients to create a thoroughly enjoyable dining experience. The only advice would be to make sure you bring your passport, because it is an eclectic, globe-trotting mix of everything you could possibly think of; boasting the likes of Henderson’s relish beef pie, tandoori chicken breast, baked camembert, Teriyaki Salmon, Thai seabass and 30-day aged sirloin steak. The emphasis here is on sharing and coming together, so inherently, we chose the Surf & Turf Platter (£19.95) to start. Mini Wagyu burgers sat proud on the plate, stacked with a generous pile of

A

bacon jam and dripping with smoked Applewood cheese, while the sweet chilli chicken was the star of the show – the crispy crunch of the casing deeply satisfying. The chicken wings were beautifully moist and tender, and the tempura prawns packed with flavour, while the presence of the Thai fishcakes gave the platter a distinctly South East Asian vibe – but with classic British sharing board throwbacks. A dip into the wine menu brought a large glass of San Giorgio Pinot Grigio (£7.75); clean and crisp and a good choice to counter the strong base flavours of the heavier sharing plate, I was still happily sipping away when our mains arrived. The seared Thai seabass (£19.95) was a triumph; a pristine piece of fish, all pearly skin and perfectly cooked with the uniquely textured dressing and jasmine rice very much at home with flakes of flesh. While my partners Teriyaki salmon was rich and bursting with flavour (£16.95) armed with egg noodles and stir-fried vegetables. Each element stood out on its own, but together tasted fantastic. Puddings err on the side of traditional, in a good way; warm French apple cake made even more indulgent by a serving

of paper-thin sliced brandied apples and Calvados cream (£6.95). The warm vegan chocolate, banana and walnut brownie (£6.95) was an alternative dessert, but nonetheless a fool-proof concoction of cakey and gooey – everything you would hope for from a brownie. Both are absolutely not to be missed, so forget whatever diet you are on! The Crown Hotel offer the highestquality comfort food, in the most airily pleasing ambience, among the most charming people, bang in the beating heart of the Georgian market town of Bawtry, and whether it’s food and a night’s stay – or a dining destination, it certainly should not be overlooked. A classic remix CHRIS WILSON REVISITS BAWTRY’S BAR AND BRASSERIE TO DISCOVER REVAMPED DÉCOR AND IMPRESSIVE MENU CHOICES. fter a recent makeover one of Bawtry’s most familiar landmarks – Bawtry’s Bar and Brasserie – is looking sharp and ready to continue its role at the heart of the town’s social scene. It’s nothing too radical but a few decorative and structural changes has unified the multi-roomed venue and some tweaks to the menu bring extra options including sharing platters and sliders while keeping the relaxed, easygoing vibe very much to the fore. The rustic-look wooden floors and tables remain in the restaurant, with some exposed brick and industrial lighting to keep everything clean, sharp and in focus. This room used to feel slightly detached from the rest of Bawtry’s but the revamp includes a large window bringing the bar area closer. Perhaps it’s a trick of the light but it works a treat. Meanwhile a youthful team in the open plan kitchen and front of house make sure service is as prompt, relaxed and friendly as ever… perfect for a

relaxed dinner for two or a larger family outing or, in my case, a catch-up meal with an old friend. Comfort food classics are very much the order of the day and our meal began with a guilty pleasure, loaded nachos (£8) piled high with chilli and sour cream with plenty of Cajun seasoning. Along with five chicken wings with Franks super-spicy hot sauce (£5) we were off to a flying start, although the diet was definitely out of the window. Continuing the indulgence theme, my friend Glynn opted for the classic 10oz ribeye (£19) with all the trimmings including chunky chips and a blue cheese sauce (£3.50) on the side. The steak was terrific, very tender and juicy, served medium-rare as requested and with the authentic char grill taste bringing an extra dimension of flavour. Equally impressive was the ‘nice and spicy’ pizza (£13.50) which was fully loaded with pepperoni, jalapenos, chilli flakes and hot sauce. Not for the fainthearted, but not stupidly hot either, and with a lovely thin, crisp base.

We used our midweek meat feast as an excuse (not that we needed one) to sample the red wine list which included some lovely choices by the glass. A Chilean Cabernet Sauvignon (£6) was full-bodied and an ideal accompaniment to the steak while a Spanish Malbec (£6) had just a touch of spice, perfect for the pizza. Perhaps a light dessert or none at all would have been sensible but a zesty lemon sponge with ice-cream (£6) and Belgian chocolate cheesecake with cream (£6) proved irresistible and the cheesecake, with flecks of chocolate in the smooth filling was pretty special. EATING OUT

Warm welcome OLIVIA WARSOP FEELS RIGHT AT HOME AT WHITEHOUSES. alking into the Whitehouses Inn in Retford gives you the same feeling as walking into your kitchen at home, only if your mum was an infinitely better cook. This gastro pub is a family owned and run business and the love and care that goes into it is evident everywhere you look. A warm, cozy atmosphere, delicious smells and the chatty staff make you feel right at home before you’ve even ordered your drinks. Once at your table you’ll discover that they offer a range of dining options from a set lunch menu (three courses for £14) to lobster and seafood sharing platters (£65); whatever your appetite it seems they’ve got every option covered. Using only the freshest locally sourced seasonal ingredients and offering a wide array of specials in addition to their expansive menu means that serious thought will be required to decide on what to treat yourself to. Spying on the delicious looking dishes arriving at nearby tables caused me to hesitate over my choice multiple times before a final

W

decision could be reached. For starters we tucked into tasty duck spring rolls with a salad garnish (£7.50) and large king prawns in a light tempura batter (£8.50) both served with a generous helping of sweet chilli sauce. Mains arrived next, for my dinner companion a succulent gourmet steak burger layered with thick bacon and melted cheese served with a large portion of hand cut chips, coleslaw and beer battered onion rings (£12.50). And for myself juicy, slow cooked pork belly with tender stem broccoli, buttery pommes Anna and scallops seared to perfection all accompanied by a rich port jus (£18.50). By this point I was starting to wonder where I was managing to put these not inconsiderable portion sizes and how much longer the zip on my trousers would hold out, but nevertheless the dessert menu beckoned. After more solemn deliberation I settled on a heavenly vanilla crème brûlée served with a light, melt-in-your-mouth shortbread biscuit (£5.95), and across

the table a delectable chocolate and Malteser cheesecake served with an array of berries and soft ice cream (£8.50) was being happily devoured and stolen spoonful at a time by myself. Sitting back after dessert I felt as though I didn’t need to eat for the rest of the month, a feeling which lasted all of 30 seconds when another mouth watering plate wafted by our table. Regrettably we weren’t able to eat everything on the menu, but there’s nothing to stop us working our way through it one visit at a time. Perfect balance THE PANTRY 8020 OFFERS NUTRITIOUS FOOD AND TREATS, WRITES RACHEL MARTIN. he best restaurants have a story that nourishes the soul, as well as the belly at their heart and the narrative behind the Pantry 8020 in Misterton is utterly compelling. In 2016, Kate Lawley quickly realised that outside the surrounding towns and cities, she and her partner, Stevie couldn't really find healthy comfort food they liked - and so they sensed an opportunity. A businesswoman by training, Kate quit the corporate world and created a colourful bounty of breakfast and brunch dishes, bowls, salads, sandwiches, burgers and sides. Comfort also comes in the form of dessert; there are a range of different homemade desserts on display each day that don't make you feel terrible about yourself and your life choices. She decided to call the place: The Pantry 8020 to evoke, as she put it, “the right dietary balance”, serving up 80% clean nutritious food vs 20% high quality treats, with the belief that you “should never have to sacrifice taste for nutrition - and indulging is ok!” Kate’s journey to a healthier self stemmed from an all-round bad relationship with food. She learnt it was not just about changing her diet but also changing her lifestyle to become healthier and happier. The Pantry 8020 was in a unique position to grow quickly, as Kate and

Stevie had taken the rare step of setting up shop just off the beaten track, in the heart of the village and civil parish of Misterton and its success quickly proved that its residents and wider community also craved clean comfort food. Every plate is a vivid rush of Technicolour tones that promise flavour; and the promise is not broken. We share a zesty and spice dusted nourish bowl (£8) made sprightly by the addition of vegan slaw, sweet potato fries, harissa marinated halloumi and honey and turmeric labneh, sprinkled with watercress and edible foliage. From the sandwich menu came a robustly dressed open steak and pesto blend (£12) of slow cooked local beef, molten brie, kale, spinach and punchy house-made pesto, and from the brunch menu, paleo steak and eggs hollandaise (£13); the most heavenly poached eggs, their yolks still runny atop of crispcrusted, springy Welbeck Bakehouse English muffins. In the spirit of enquiry and, of course, pure guilt-free greed, we shared a plate of banana and oat pancakes (£9), made fragrant by a whisper of coconut yoghurt, and paleo sweet potato waffles drenched in blueberries (£8). Like everything here, first you look at it and sigh. Then you taste it, and sigh again. I think now would also be a good time to recognise the staff who took care of us during the course of the afternoon.

I’ve eaten in many restaurants, but the service I received at The Pantry 8020 was flawless. I am smitten. There is the feeling of a broader familial enterprise; of a bunch of people determined to bring a more obscure strand of cooking to the countryside. The quality of the primarily healthy dishes and the range of options (which change seasonally) means you can go there weekly, if not daily, get different, satisfying food and not feel like you need to spend the evening weeping as you scroll social media feeds. Kate has made a long journey of so many kinds to get to this point. She told us her story through the food on the plate - and we are all the richer for it. If you’d like to inject a little bit of The Pantry 8020 mantra into your own home, follow: @thepantry8020 on Instagram and visit the Pantry 8020 blog: www.thepantry8020.co.uk for lots of healthy recipes and inspiration. “I’m Chintana, most people know me as Ton. I grew up in a village not far from the city of Ratchuburi in Thailand. I started cooking at a young age and used to cook for all my family. Mai Dang was my first restaurant I opened when I was 18 years old. Six Years later, I met my husband and we decided to start a family in Doncaster. Then this gave me the opportunity to open the first Thai Restaurant in Doncaster, The Bangkok Thai Restaurant. Ten years of running a successful business, we wanted to expand and we decided to open the Bangkok Royal Elephant. Retro charm OLIVIA WARSOP ENJOYS A SLICE OF TRADITION IN NORTON. ancy a bit of vintage charm? The Dainty Doris coffee shop in Norton is oozing with it. Retro furniture and modern accessories make for aesthetic goals in this space and once you’re through the door, you’re instantly swept away. The staff are bubbly and personable, knowing their regulars by name and making newcomers feel like part of the family. Serving a mouth-watering array of cakes, meals and hot drinks, Dainty Doris also serves afternoon tea at £14.95 per person which was our order of the day. Seated at a table artfully laid with mismatched vintage china and greenery, and feeling delightfully like Alice at the Mad Hatter’s tea party, we are asked which hot drinks we would like and swiftly delivered a pot of loose leaf tea with instructions on using the tea strainer. Extra touches like this are prevalent throughout the entire experience making this afternoon tea feel truly unique. When the food is served it is on a three-

F

tier cake stand. It’s almost too pretty to eat and comprises a mix of hot and cold savouries as well as sweets. Light cucumber and cream cheese sandwiches and egg mayonnaise sandwiches are interspersed with tasty, smoked ham salad wraps on the bottom layer. Served with afternoon tea is a teacup full of delicious homemade tomato soup, into which I was unable to resist dipping my sandwiches, much to the mock-horror of the staff. The second layer is the hot savouries, huge wedges of mouth-watering cheese and onion quiche and stuffing filled pasties with salad garnish on the side. A refill of our tea and we were ready to dive into the pile of sweet treats on the top layer. Yummy coconut tarts liberally dusted with icing sugar and topped with berries were first and quickly followed by rich caramel and chocolate rice crispy squares. And finally scones, now I’m not a scone connoisseur but they are my favourite part of afternoon tea so expectations were high. And they

definitely delivered. Each scone was crumbly, soft and coated with a generous layer of orange chocolate, topped with a Terry’s chocolate orange slice and served with butter and berries. Afternoon tea at Dainty Doris is more than a meal, it’s an experience. From the staff to the food everything goes the extra mile to make you feel a bit more special and the visit a bit more magical. Next time you feel the need to indulge in something sweet, step inside and let them surprise you. Dainty Doris Coffee Shop Norton Common Road, Norton, Doncaster, DN6 9HP Tel: 01302 707986

Sunshine indoors GENEVIEVE BRAUND ENJOYS AFTERNOON TEA IN THE MOST GLORIOUS OF SUMMER SETTINGS. aving been experts in all things gardening for over 60 years, you’d be forgiven for thinking that at Walkers Nurseries, Blaxton, Doncaster you’ll find only plants and the odd water feature or two. In fact, in addition to the beautiful show gardens, you’ll also find two on-site restaurants which are guaranteed to tickle your tastebuds. On this occasion we were invited to The Potting Shed for a spot of afternoon tea. Filled with beautiful foliage hanging from the ceiling, and with light streaming through the glass roof, the afternoon’s sunshine could be enjoyed even from inside which made for a lovely combination of alfresco dining with the added warmth we are often so lacking in the north of England. We were shown to a lovely corner table, topped with colourful china tea cups waiting to be filled. My companion and I were immediately asked for our preference of hot drink; both opting for a classic British brew, which came with unlimited refills throughout, so we could simply sit back, relax and prepared to be dazzled.

H

74 Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk

Just minutes later, two individual afternoon teas were presented to us, a welcome change to the usual sharing etiquette which also meant I was not tempted to pinch any of my companion’s treats. With an array of freshly made sandwiches, moreish mini sausage rolls and a generous portion of the quiche of the day (cheese and onion) to choose from, there was a seductive savoury selection to satisfy all. Attentive but not intrusive, the staff were eager to please, and with pastry Mary Berry would be proud of, there were certainly no complaints here! Moving on to something a little sweeter; tiffin and of course an obligatory scone, served with clotted cream and jam, were among the dainty delights prepared by the on-site patisserie chefs. Despite being a selfconfessed savoury connoisseur, each sweet treat was enjoyed thoroughly. A personal favourite was the raspberry Bakewell tart, which provided a lovely nutty flavour, cut through by the sharp, fresh raspberries. Heading out the door, doggy-bag in hand (which would later make the

perfect tea-time treat), we ended our lovely Monday afternoon with a stroll around the surrounding gardens, with the aim of burning off all those calories. After all, bikini season isn’t over just yet! Afternoon tea is served on Monday and Tuesday afternoons at The Potting Shed, priced at £25 for two, or £30 for deluxe afternoon tea with a glass of prosecco. For those in the mood for something a little smaller,The Potting Shed also offers a range of sweet and savoury baked goods, from scones (from £2) to pasties (from £2.95) and soup of the day (£4.25). The School of Artisan Food Has A Course For Everyone The School of Artisan Food opened on the historic Welbeck Estate in the heart of Sherwood Forest in 2009, the first place ever dedicated solely to teaching traditional artisanal breadmaking, cheesemaking and butchery skills. This unique place has a course for everyone, whether it’s a two hour tasting session, learning a new artisan skill in a day or advancing a professional career under the expert guidance of world-class experienced artisan tutors. There is so much on offer, including baking, brewing and butchery through to cheesemaking, chocolate, fermentation and foraging.

Advanced Diploma in Artisan Baking: Oct & April start dates This six-month, full-time, intensive course is the equivalent of a foundation degree level qualification and combines practical hands-on training in bread making, patisserie and viennoiserie alongside how to establish a successful food business start-up. Regular open days are held for intakes in April and October each year.

Artisan Food Production Degree: 30 Sept 2019 The School has teamed up with Nottingham Trent University to offer the new Foundation degree in artisan food production from 30 September 2019. Students will learn all aspects of artisan bread-baking, cheese-making, butchery, charcuterie and patisserie creation. Teaching will be split between the university’s Brackenhurst Campus, and the School on one of England’s great country estates.

Therapeutic Baking: 27 Sept 2019 Taught by a baking diploma graduate, this course launches September 27 and aims to combine the joy of making real bread with the application of positive mental health approaches to provide the student bakers with the tools to help them manage stress and improve emotional wellbeing.

Extra slice of happiness THE SCHOOL OF ARTISAN FOOD LAUNCHES NEW THERAPEUTIC BAKING COURSE. new course at The School of Artisan Food is combining mindfulness techniques with the beneficial aspects of baking with the aim of helping to build positive mental health amongst student bakers. Therapeutic Baking launches on 27 September and aims to combine the joy of making real bread with the application of positive mental health approaches to provide the student bakers with the tools to help them manage stress and improve emotional wellbeing. Ian Waterland, a School of Artisan Food baking diploma graduate himself and qualified mental health practitioner, has devised the course combining his

A

Ian Waterland

love of artisanal baking with his mental health experience. Ian said: “Over 30 years I have seen people struggle to improve their emotional health and wellbeing. When I discovered the joys of making bread I had a lightbulb moment – real bread was the perfect vehicle to apply the principles of maintaining good mental health.” In the tranquil surroundings of the Welbeck Estate, the one-day course teaches ‘5 ways to wellbeing’ and other therapeutic techniques along with handson baking and technical demonstrations. After the baking process has worked its magic, students can take their loaves

home to share amongst family and friends for an extra slice of happiness. Ian will also be teaching students embarking on the UK’s first ever degree in artisan food production from September which is being delivered by the School in partnership with the awardwinning Nottingham Trent University. He added: “The opportunity to help teach the next generation of aspiring bakers and foodies is fantastic and really brings all of my skills gained over the years together.” Ian’s unique approach to wellbeing will continue: “As the students will be making bread they will automatically be accessing some of the benefits of being productive and gaining the satisfaction of creating loaves; I can not help but embed wellbeing strategies into my teaching. Happy students, with a good sense of wellbeing, achieve good results.” To find more information on degree open days, the Advanced Diploma in Artisan Baking and short courses at The School of Artisan Food visit: https://www.schoolofartisanfood.org/ Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk 79

he team at Saks Doncaster are no strangers to being recognised for their hard work. As winners of the prestigious L’Oreal Colour Trophy and having had their work featured in Vogue, they’ve already cemented their place up there with the best in British hairdressing. That doesn’t mean that their latest accolades were received with any less joy from the team though, as they excitedly took home three awards at Saks UK’s Gathering & Awards 2019 in front of over 500 of their peers in the hair and beauty industry. This year’s Saks Gathering took place at the Hilton Metropole on Edgware Road and showcased, amidst thousands of sequins, what it means to be part of the Saks family. The evening opened with a stage show by Saks’ Art Team, who put together a jaw-dropping celebration of hair, beauty, individuality and diversity. year’s Gathering was pretty special. Our mantra is always work hard, play hard, and Saks Gathering is the perfect example of that. We’re like one big family at Saks and we love celebrating the successes of our salon owners and their teams.” Paul and Rebecca (owners of Saks Doncaster) initially chose to open a Saks salon due to the brand’s brilliant reputation as one of the UK’s favourite hair and beauty franchise groups. The backing from this established brand allowed them the opportunity to not only start out with a recognisable name that clients know and trust, but also to work with some of the best names in hair and have the creative freedom necessary to showcase their talents. Now in their eighth year, there’s no question of the skill held by the pair and their team, and the recognition they received at the Saks Gathering is evidence of this. Saks Doncaster took home the award for Hair Salon of the Year – proving that the team’s efforts over the past year to

Winning formula AFTER FINDING CONVENTIONAL SLIMMING CLUBS DIDN’T WORK FOR HER, ANNE KAY TURNED TO MEDISCULPT WEIGHT LOSS THERAPY FROM G&M HEALTHCARE – AND THE RESULTS HAVE BEEN ASTOUNDING. fter a lifetime of struggling and failing to control her weight, Anne Kay feared she would never shed the excess pounds that were the source of so much frustration. But after losing the best part of three stones in just under three months, she finally believes she is going to reach her ideal weight – and it’s all down to Medisculpt Weight Loss Therapy from G&M Healthcare. When Anne met G&M’s senior clinical therapist Sarah O’Brien for a free informal consultation, she was convinced she was one of those people for whom diets just did not work. “I’m 60 and I’ve been dieting since I was 13. Conventional slimming clubs did not work for me. I’d lose weight at first but it would all come back on. When you’ve lost just three pounds in nine weeks you know it’s not working.” But all that changed when Anne agreed to try Medisculpt Weight Loss Therapy – the pounds simply fell away from the start. More importantly, the weight loss continued week after week. “I have never felt better in my life,” she says. “I feel full of energy and instead of sitting on the couch watching TV, I am out in the world, gardening and enjoying life. “I’ve never lost so much weight in such a short space of time and that’s where the motivation comes from, because you can see the results week by week.” Anne is on a controlled eating plan consisting of around 40 varieties of sachet foods alongside a list of unlimited vegetables and fruit. She combines the diet with two treatments: LPG (lipo-masage which reduces cellulite and sagging skin, giving a toned look) and BTL Vanquish ME (a non-surgical option for people with stubborn fat pockets). “The treatments reduce the chance of being left with loose skin following the weight loss, and they have worked brilliantly for me,” says Anne. “Everyone who knows me has noticed a massive difference. I even managed to lose half a stone when I went on ten-day holiday to Cornwall. Normally I’d have

been giving in to temptation and eating cream teas and pasties, but I resisted and ate salads instead.” Anne visits G&M Healthcare once a week for a weigh-in and a health check, and she feels certain the advice and encouragement she receives from the whole team, including her therapist Sarah and Dr Grace Hula, is a key element in her success. When Anne loses another couple of pounds she will reach a total weight loss of exactly three stones and from then on her diet will change, introducing more normal food in a controlled way and reducing the number of sachets. Her target is a total weight loss of four and a half stones and she is convinced that after a lifetime of failed diets she will achieve her goal. “Everyone is so supportive, I really can’t fault the treatment I get. I’d certainly recommend the Medisculpt diet and the team at G&M Healthcare. I’d urge anybody struggling with their weight to contact them for an initial consultation and change their life – because basically that is what it has done for me.”

All you need to know about Acupuncture by Chapman Physiotherapy Acupuncture Acupuncture is effective in a wide range of painful conditions and is commonly used to treat musculo-skeletal pain e.g. back, shoulder, neck and leg pain. Acupuncture is a technique of inserting and manipulating fine filiform needles into specific points on the body to relieve pain or for therapeutic purposes. The word acupuncture comes from the Latin acus, "needle", and pungere, "to prick". These guidelines have been produced to ensure the safe and effective use of acupuncture within Chapman Physiotherapy by our clinicians Acupuncture is an integral part of the rapid growth of complementary therapy in the UK. It involves the insertion of fine needles into specific points on meridians or trigger points. All needles are sterile, single use only and disposed of immediately after use. Acupuncture stimulates the nerves in skin and muscle and can produce a variety of effects. We know that it increases the body’s release of natural painkillers – endorphin and serotonin – in the pain pathways of both the spinal cord and the brain. This modifies the way pain signals are received. However, acupuncture does much more than reduce pain, and has a beneficial effect on health. Patients often notice an improved sense of well-being after treatment. Acupuncture is effective in a wide range of painful conditions and is commonly used to treat musculo-skeletal pain e.g.. back, shoulder, neck and leg pain. It has been used successfully to treat headaches, migraines, trapped nerves, sports injuries, chronic muscle strains and various kinds of rheumatic and arthritic pain. Which points will be used? The points stimulated may not be close to the part of the body where the problem is experienced. For example, although you may suffer from headaches, needles may be inserted into your foot or hand. There are around 500 acupuncture points on the body. An experienced acupuncturist will use a selection of perhaps 4-8 of these for each treatment. It is quite usual for different points to be selected as a patient’s condition changes during the course of treatment. What does it feel like? When a needle is inserted, the sensation is often described as a tingling or dull ache. Needles may be inserted and immediately removed, or may be left in place for 20 minutes or more, depending on the effect required. During treatment, patients commonly experience a heaviness in the limbs or a pleasant feeling of relaxation. The benefits of acupuncture frequently include more than just relief from a particular condition. Many people find that it can lead to increased energy levels, as well as better appetite and sleep, and an enhanced sense of overall well-being. As a general guide, if you are suffering from pain, acupuncture can help. However, results can never be guaranteed and if after 2-3 sessions, the symptoms are unchanged, acupuncture may not be right for you. Should I tell my doctor? If you are receiving treatment from your doctor then it is sensible to mention that you are having acupuncture. Let your acupuncturist know about any medication that you are taking and do not stop taking any medication without discussion with your doctor. How many treatments will I need? This varies between patients. Most people have a course of treatment and usually notice change after 4-6 sessions. Treatment may be twice a week to begin with and is then at longer intervals as the condition responds. Are there any side-effects? Here is a list of side effects that you may or may not experience: • momentary discomfort as the needle is inserted • drowsiness and sleepiness • bruising • temporary worsening of symptoms • onset of a migraine headache (if you are a sufferer) • feeling faint (during or after treatment), for this reason it is essential that you eat before treatment. It is not advised for those with a fear of needles.

Go bespoke with David Fowkes When clients commission commitment jewellery from awardwinning designer David Fowkes, whose gallery is at Thoresby Courtyard, they embark on an emotional and exhilarating journey. David is a designer who collaborates extensively with his clients in order to truly understand their unique romantic story. Via an initial consultation, ideas are created and outline sketches developed. Many clients choose to move away from the traditional diamond engagement ring, eternity ring or wedding band and commission David to create unique pieces, incorporating distinctive coloured gemstones to innovatively reflect the love they share and the commitment they have made to one another. Through the experience of designing and creating something unique, often combining gems and metals from existing pieces of jewellery, as well as introducing new elements, the owner has a much more emotional connection with the final piece and the joy of knowing it is totally bespoke and it doesn’t have to be any more expensive than buying an ‘off the shelf ’ commitment or engagement ring. David built his reputation working with the world’s leading mines and specialist cutting houses to source rare and exceptional gemstones that cannot be found anywhere else and which often prove the starting point for his designs. One example of David’s dazzling designs is a five-piece stacking ring that can be worn as individual rings for a low key, everyday look, or together as a stunning item of jewellery for a special occasion. 108 Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk

David Fowkes said: “It was great to see so many visitors to this inaugural show and to see the interest in coloured gemstones, which are such a key part of our designs. Coloured stones are growing in popularity, partly because they have meaning and connotation behind them and thanks to them proving a great investment, with some material having consistently risen in price over recent years.” Free consultations with David are available at the Thoresby Courtyard Gallery.
