You’re finally about to release your long-awaited debut album, the brilliant Sorry I’m Late. What can you tell us about it?
Some of the songs that are on there I wrote about five years ago, some I wrote only a year ago, so it really shows a real span of how I’ve grown over that period as a woman, as an artist and just as a human being. It was really important to me then, to show a different, more vulnerable side to me on the album.
I’ve built most of my songs on the past on a platform of women empowerment, not taking any sh*t and basically never letting them see you sweat. The other side of that coin though, is actually being really vulnerable and allowing yourself to be hurt, because all these experiences that make us be strong women and strong people, they can come from a place of pain. For a while, I really wanted to hide that, but for this album I really wanted to embrace that vulnerability and show people that I could do the sassy, ‘bad B’ thing, which is an important part of who I am, but it’s just as important to show the other side, so I hope I’ve done that.
I feel like I have though, so that makes me really happy. Women in general, whether it’s in the workplace, in relationships or as mothers, sisters and so on, are meant to be this strong, empowered fixers who are the emotional careers, the ones who hold everything together. There’s a lot of pressure in that, so I think it’s actually really powerful when you can just go ‘I’m not feeling powerful or strong today!’, then you actually come out the other end feeling empowered for being able to do it.
I think we need to stop holding women up to such high expectations. We’re not just the strong statues that can power through anything, we have our moments and that’s alright. So there are a lot of songs on this album that, if you are feeling down or under pressure, you’ll be able to connect with and relate to.
The album’s themes are very personal, but at the same time there’s a universal quality to them at the same time. You’d imagine they’ll really resonate with fans when they hear them?
I really hope so. Being a woman myself, I feel it’s really important that I write music that young women can relate to, but it’s also for anyone that has just been put down in their life. I have so much love for the LGBTQ+ community, because they’ve been so accepting of me, so it’s really important that they listen to this album and feel accepted too. I wanted it to be an album that everyone can enjoy and feel empowered by. That’s my main aim.
Your single I Wrote A Song was everywhere due to being the UK’s Eurovision entry, but the album must have been finished before you were picked for Eurovision?
The album was done and dusted long before Eurovision. In fact, it was meant to come out a lot sooner, but when that came up, the whole plan had to change. It was a shame, but it was so the right thing to do as so many more people know who I am now. It was actually so perfect, as right after Eurovision, I had an album ready to go!
How much have things changed for you since competing in Eurovision?
Even at the few shows and festivals I’ve done since then, it feels like there’s more of an audience there, there’s more support and just more people knowing who I am, which can only be a good thing.
Did seeing all that high-end production first hand give you any inspiration for your own live shows? It was all on such a huge scale, but I was definitely inspired by the choreography that I saw there, so I want to have the freedom to do more of that. My stage style is actually very different to Eurovision, as I love to chat and have audience interaction, as in I like my
shows to almost feel like you’re in your front room with your mates, but I’m definitely looking forward to bringing some of that more polished choreography into the mix.
The people that do know you though, seem to really, really adore you and it looks very much that the feeling is mutual, would that be right? Without your fans, you’ve got nothing, absolutely nothing. Some people think record labels and maybe artists run this sh*t, but it’s the fans. Without them, nobody at the record labels would have a job! Nobody would be able to do this thing that we all love without them. So I think it’s really important that you respect them, but also personally, I feel very, very close to my fans. I’m very protective of them and of course I’m very grateful to all of them, as their support over the years has always been incredible, so I try really hard to have a close relationship with them. They mean the world to me.

unique converted Wesleyan chapel in vibrant Camden Town is helping transform the tourism potential of one of London’s up-and-coming boroughs in its first six months since opening.
After a £9million investment and two-year build, The Wesley Camden Town opened to widespread acclaim at the start of the year, and after six months of trading, we can already see the buzz it has brought to uber-trendy Camden Town.
The Wesley Camden Town is the first UK sister property to The Wesley Euston, the popular hotel near Euston Station which was recognised as “the UK’s first ethical hotel” some ten years ago. The Wesley Camden Town property has the same high level of eco-credentials as its big sister at Euston and is already a popular amenity within the local Camden community for visiting friends, relatives and business travellers. Whilst it is ideally situated away from the noise and commotion which many more central, more expensive hotels have, you can still be in Trafalgar Square, Piccadilly Circus or Covent Garden in less than 20 minutes.
And within a few minutes’ walk from The Wesley Camden Town are a wide range of popular attractions and venues to visit including the world-famous Camden Lock Market, Regent’s Canal, Koko and Roundhouse music venues, Regent’s Park, London Zoo and that perennial favourite amongst UK and international travellers to London, Madame Tussauds. The hotel is also expected to be especially popular
with rail travellers from the north and Midlands, and also with travellers using Eurostar out of nearby St Pancras.
The Wesley Camden Town itself is located just off Camden High Street, and less than 400 metres from Mornington Crescent tube (just one stop north of Euston). On the nearby High Street, hotel guests will find a wide selection of restaurants with British and international cuisine, or you may want to head over to sister hotel The Wesley Euston and its vibrant Wesley Bar & Kitchen for dinner and a drink.
The Wesley Camden Town has 38 bedrooms over four floors of the sympathetically designed converted chapel which dates back to 1824, including “Classic”, “Superior” and “Wesley Collection” rooms. Prices vary per night and are from less than £150 for a double en-suite room with Queen size bed, luxury toiletries, smart TV, climate control and free WiFi. There’s a ten per cent discount for direct bookings made on the hotel’s website – www.thewesley.co.uk – and forward bookings for events like London’s Christmas lights, the capital’s New Year’s Eve celebrations and even the recently-announced Taylor Swift concerts next year, are already very strong.

The ultimate Classic
HERE ARE TEN REASONS WHY THE BETFRED ST LEGER IS A RACING FESTIVAL NOT TO BE MISSED.
Horse racing history
1 2
At the historic Doncaster Racecourse, you can be sure to get a taste of history and culture. Steeped in over 400 years of racing heritage, with records of regular race meetings dating back to the 16th century, Doncaster Racecourse is one of Britain’s oldest racecourses.
Home of the famous Betfred St Leger Festival, the fourdays features an impressive racing card, including the world’s oldest race still being run – the Doncaster Cup – alongside the Festival’s showpiece Betfred St Leger Stakes, which was founded in 1776 by Lieutenant Colonel Anthony St Leger. With just five British 'Classics' each year, the Betfred St Leger Stakes is the final Classic of the year and the world’s oldest.
Day 1: Ladies Day
Thursday 14 September
Everyone loves dressing up for a day at the races, and Ladies Day at the Betfred St Leger Festival offers the perfect opportunity to dust off those glad rags and showcase the very best your wardrobe has to offer! Although not obligatory, most racegoers come dressed in their best formal attire in a veritable fest of high-class outfits, sharp suits and glamorous hats. It’s not just for the fun of it either, with cash prize of £1,000 up for grabs for the best dressed racegoer in the Style Awards, which is open to all. Make sure you head to the famous flower wall during the event to grab a photo and be entered automatically into this year's competition.

Day 4: Legends Day Sunday 17 September
Legend’s Day is the fourth and final day of the Betfred St Leger festival, a prestigious day where previous winners of the famous Betfred St Leger Stakes and other horse racing legends come back to compete in a charity race. Previous winners of the race include legends like AP McCoy, Joseph O’Brien, Mick Kinane and Julie Krone.
The Leger Legends Classified Stakes is the only Charity race for ex-professional jockeys in Britain, so it’s not one to be missed! The race, which was first run in 2010, is a focus for a wonderful charity lunch raising money for both the National Horseracing College and the Injured Jockeys Fund Jack Berry House.
The last day of the Festival is perfect for all the family as well, so grab the whole gang and come down for this truly unique final day.

Experience fine dining
Alongside a wide variety of fantastic food and drink, featuring local suppliers, available for the thousands that attend, if you’re a connoisseur of fine foods you’re in for a real treat at the Betfred St Leger Festival. There are a variety of luxury hospitality experiences on offer including the most premium experience on site… The Sky Garden.
Expect champagne, canapes, afternoon tea and a fantastic seven course tasting menu carefully curated by the onsite team of award-winning chefs. If you want to elevate your experience at the Betfred St Leger Festival this year, then this is the choice for you.

A favourite among the Royals
A trip to Doncaster this September means you’ll be following in the famous footsteps of many royals. With horseracing being a passion of the late Queen Elizabeth II, her royal highness enjoyed many trips to the Betfred St Leger Festival over the years; the earliest being her 1952 visit to Doncaster to watch her own horse, Gay Time, being ridden by Gordon Richards. The Queen later won the St Leger Stakes with her filly Dunfermline in 1977, whilst she was also the winning owner in the 2014 Doncaster Cup with Estimate, trained by Sir Michael Stoute and ridden by Ryan Moore. A celebrity hotspot
Similarly, the Betfred St Leger Festival has had its fair share of famous faces visit over the years, with the Made in Chelsea cast, X Factor stars, Love Islanders, supermodels and singers all photographed at the star-studded event. You’re sure to get some good celeb spotting at the Betfred St Leger Festival this year!
A final farewell to Frankie
Racing fans will know that the legendary jockey Frankie Dettori is set to hang up his saddle at the end of the season after an immensely successful career spanning over 40 years, which includes six wins in the Betfred St Leger Stakes.
Dettori will call time on his career at the end of 2023, so the Betfred St Leger Festival could be one of the very last opportunities to see him in action in Britain. Will we see that famous flying dismount celebration one more time?
Easy to get to
Doncaster is probably the easiest racecourse to get to in the whole of the UK. Trains come into Doncaster station from all over the country, and both the London to Edinburgh, and Plymouth to Newcastle services cross at the railway station. The Frenchgate Interchange means you can easily catch a bus to the racecourse and there’s a service that runs every 15 minutes or so. Doncaster racecourse also has excellent links to the motorway network including M1 (junction 32), M18 (junction 3/4), A1M (junction 36) and the M62.
9
Afterparty performances
As fun and entertaining as a jam-packed day of racing is, the fun doesn’t stop there with live music acts and an afterparty to match all the electric atmosphere that’s gone before it.
Once the entertainment on the track has finished, the fun off the track begins. There will be a range of fantastic live music and DJ sets performing live after racing and all included in your ticket price.

How to navigate the St Leger
THE COUNTRY’S TOP JOCKEYS WILL BE DESCENDING ON DONCASTER FOR THE 2023 ST LEGER FESTIVAL. HERE’S YOUR GUIDE TO THE FOUR-DAY EVENT.
The Doncaster St Leger Festival 2023 is just around the corner, and whether you’re a seasoned racegoer or a first-timer looking to soak up the excitement, this year’s event promises an unforgettable experience that goes beyond just the action on the racetrack. From fashion, food to thrilling bets on the horses, this guide has you covered with all the must-do activities and insider tips to make the most of your time at the festival.
For the first time in 2023, the Betfred St Leger Festival opens on Thursday 14 September with Ladies Day. The four-day event has opened on a Wednesday since 1947, with a few exceptions, until 1970 when the St Leger meeting took permanent root being staged Wednesday to Saturday. The aim of switching the festival days is to give more people an opportunity to go racing. Friday 15 September the Doncaster Cup takes centre-stage; the oldest race currently
run under the rules of horse racing and final leg of the Stayer’s Triple Crown.
The weekend events culminate with the world’s oldest Classic and final of the season, the Betfred St Leger Stakes on Saturday. Finishing on Sunday 20 September, the inaugural St Leger Community Funday will showcase great horse racing, including the Leger Legends charity race and a host of family-friendly entertainment.

Thrilling horse racing: Where legends are made
Of course, the highlight of the festival is the electrifying horse racing. The St Leger Stakes, one of the oldest and most prestigious races in the world, is the main event. Whether you’re an avid racegoer or a novice, the energy of the crowd and the thundering hooves of the horses will leave you breathless. Take the time to study the racecard and form guide to make informed decisions on which horses to bet on. This year is extra special, as Doncaster bids farewell to the legendary Frankie Dettori. ‘Frankie’ will be hanging up the reigns at the end of the season, and it will be your last chance to see the legend in the flesh for one last time.
Savour culinary delights: A winning selection
The festival boasts a variety of culinary options, ranging from traditional British favourites to international cuisines. Be sure to explore the food stalls and hospitality tents, and don’t forget to raise a toast to the winners with a glass of champagne
Fashion: Dress to impress
The Doncaster St Leger Festival is not only about the horses; it’s also an occasion to showcase your fashion finesse. Ladies and gentlemen will be ‘Donning’ their best attire, don’t miss the opportunity to don your most stylish ensemble.
Plan ahead: Ticketing and logistics
To ensure a seamless experience, purchase your tickets in advance from the Doncaster Racecourse website. Arrive early to avoid last-minute rushes, and consider using public transportation or designated parking areas.

Gregory, ridden by Frankie Dettori, is highly-favoured in the St Leger Stakes
As autumn approaches, racing enthusiasts gather to witness one of the most prestigious events in the British equestrian calendar – the Betfred St Leger. Steeped in history, this spectacle is set to grace the Town Moor turf once again, bringing together a field of exceptional three-year-old thoroughbreds vying for victory in a test of class, speed and stamina combined.
In its storied legacy, the Doncaster St Leger has stood as a true testament to the power of equine athleticism, a rigorous test of a thoroughbred. With its roots tracing back to 1776, this classic race has consistently produced moments of horse racing history. The 2023 edition has all the ingredients to live up to its reputation, not least with the departure of Frankie Dettori it has the potential for more history to be written.
Rob Plumbridge looks at the big race and previews his top five chances for glory, including his main tip and an each way outsider at big odds!
16:20 Doncaster St Leger Stakes
Saturday 16 September 2023
PICK#1
Horse: Gregory
Trainer: John Gosden
Jockey: Frankie Dettori
If Gregory were to land this year’s edition of the St Ledger it would be a fitting end to Frankie Dettori’s famed career. He retires at the end of the season and so the St Leger will be his final ever British Classic.
It would be so fitting for him to finish on a high with one of his famous flying dismounts in front of a jubilant Town Moore Crowd.
He has an outstanding chance too.
Gregory may have lost his unbeaten tag at York last time, but it was clear as day that he was running at a distance too short.
The 1 mile 6 furlongs in the St Leger will be much more up his street and I think we will see the very best of him.
PICK#2
Horse: Continuous
Trainer: Aidan O’Brien
Jockey: Ryan Moore
Continuous was the horse that defeated Gregory in the Great Voltigeur at York. It was his first win as a threeyear-old in fact and a real eye-catcher. He clearly relished the step up in trip having raced at 1 mile 2 furlongs previously. He could certainly be an improver in the St Leger, however, I do question whether he will have the extra stamina going off his pedigree. He would ideally want softer ground as well, as that’s what his best twoyear-old form came on.
PICK#3
Horse: Desert Hero
Trainer: William Haggas
Jockey: Tom Marquand
Owner: His Majesty The King
This year’s St Leger certainly isn’t short of stories. From racing royalty to actual royalty now. Top contender Desert Hero will be sporting the famous royal silks of His Majesty The King. It would be King Charles’ first Classic winner as an owner, a race that his late mother Queen Elizabeth II won in 1977 with Dunfermline.
Desert Hero showed an outstanding attitude when winning at Royal Ascot to win by just a neck. That gave the firm impression he needed a step up in trip, which could bring about the necessary improvement at the top level.
It would be a huge victory for Trainer and Yorkshireman William Haggas too, and would be very much seen as a ‘home win’ in that respect.

Will you be celebrating at the end?
PICK#4
Horse: Savethelastdance
Trainer: Aidan O’Brien
Jockey: TBC
Savethelastdance bids to become just the eighth filly to win this race in the postwar era. She was at one time at the top of the Epsom Oaks market and highly regarded. She could only finish second that day, but got back to winning form in the Irish Oaks at The Curragh. Her latest outing was in the Yorkshire Oaks where she finished third having led all the way. I’m not sure either the York track or the trip were completely to her liking as she was quickly outpaced in the final two furlongs. The St Leger should be more suitable from that perspective. All her form is on Firm ground so it will be interesting if she were to tackle it a little softer on St Leger day, which will more than likely be the case in September. On breeding she is by Galileo who was more than happy with some cut in the surface, so that theoretically would not be a problem.
PICK#5
Horse: Chesspiece
Trainer: Simon & Ed Crisford
Jockey: James Doyle
Chesspiece was third in the race won by Gregory at Glorious Goodwood so has a bit to find with that rival, however he was very keen early on in that race and he’s shown himself to be much better when managing to settle down in his races. He did so at Hamilton and won comfortably, before being beaten by the aforementioned Desert Hero by the slimmest of margins. I think the St Leger will really suit this horse though. He is sired by Nathanial so he’ll relish the stamina test on offer, which looks assured with a big field. If there’s some juice in the ground I think he’s going to run a huge race at bigger odds and will be an each-way bet for myself if he turns up. At then time of writing he’s 16/1 so plenty of value on offer.
VERDICT:
I’m still in the Gregory camp here. He was clear favourite for this race before his defeat at York. However, the trip was far less than ideal. He looks a proper stayer and I think he will win this in September. You just know Frankie Dettori will have a sublime ride up his sleeve in his final British Classic and this would bring the house down if he were to win. At bigger odds I like Chesspiece for the powerful Godolphin connections.

rankie Dettori’s stature in the racing world is nothing short of legendary. With a career spanning over four decades, Dettori has become a household name and an icon of the sport only surpassed, perhaps, by that of his predecessor Lester Piggott. His natural talent, unmatched riding skills, and magnetic personality have made him a beloved figure among racing enthusiasts worldwide. Dettori’s achievements, including winning all five British Classics and the prestigious Prix de

l’Arc de Triomphe multiple times, have solidified his place as one of the greatest jockeys of all time.
Beyond his extraordinary record, Dettori’s ability to connect with fans and his infectious enthusiasm have made him a true ambassador for the sport. Whether it’s his famous flying dismount or his charismatic interviews, Dettori’s presence in the racing world is a testament to his enduring legacy and his status as a true icon.
Doncaster holds a special place in Dettori’s heart, where he has forged an extraordinary legacy, especially during
the prestigious St Leger Festival. The St Leger Festival, held annually in September, is one of the most prestigious events in the British racing calendar. Doncaster Racecourse’s picturesque setting becomes the stage for a week of thrilling races, culminating in the St Leger Stakes, the world’s oldest classic horse race. Dettori’s association with the festival spans over three decades, marked by countless memorable moments and notable wins.

FACT: The wedding ring goes on the left ring finger because it is the only finger with a vein that connects to the heart.
Let’s take a closer look at some of the highlights of his career at this historic racecourse.
1995: Early Classic Success with Classic Cliché and Shantou
In 1995, Dettori steered Classic Cliche to victory in the St Leger Stakes, providing the young jockey with his maiden win in the race. It was a comingof-age moment for Dettori, cementing his status as one of the brightest talents in the sport having already won two Classics previously in the 1994 and 1995 Epsom Oaks. Classic Cliche’s triumph showcased Dettori’s tactical brilliance and knack for timing. He would go on to defend his crown a year later on Shantou, this time for Newmarket trainer John Gosden – who he would have more success with years later.
2005: A ten-year wait for the next
For Dettori, the St Leger is like waiting for a bus. A decade after his first St Leger victory, Dettori won the race in
2008
Sir Michael Stoute wins the St Leger at last after 25 previous attempts and five second places, thanks to Dettori and Conduit
successive years again in the 2005 and 2006 renewals. In 2005 he teamed up with trainer Aidan O’Brien to secure another prestigious win at Doncaster. Riding the talented Scorpion, Dettori displayed his exceptional riding skills, guiding the colt to a memorable triumph in the St Leger Stakes. This victory showcased Dettori’s adaptability and
versatility as a jockey, proving that his success was not limited to any particular type of horse or race.
Still not finished
Despite being a veteran stage, Dettori has never let up in his pursuit of top tier success in recent time. This was as evident when guiding Logician to glory here in 2019. The magnificent grey made light work of a top tier field and Frankie always had him in a great position to pounce. Once again, Dettori delivered on the big stage.
2023? A final farewell?
This year Frankie will be on current favourite Gregory, a winner at Royal Ascot and a real prospect of a horse. This could signal a fairytale ending to Dettori’s career on Town Moor and would no doubt bring the house down. Whatever the result, it will be Doncaster’s chance to salute a true great and send him off into a happy retirement at the end of the year.

ST LEGER
s the world’s oldest classic, the St Leger draws an international crowd, not just at Town Moor but on television screens all over the world. Horse racing is well and truly a global sport but is also the second largest spectator sport in the UK.
For the 100,000 people who work in the British horseracing industry, these race days watched the world over are the culmination of years of preparation. From bookmakers to journalists, chefs to jockeys, racecourse managers to trainers, the roles and the career opportunities are endless.
But how do you become a jockey or a trainer or a racing secretary? These aren’t careers you’re likely to pursue at your local college – much more specialist training is needed and that’s what you’ll find at the National Horseracing College (NHC), based at Rossington Hall near Doncaster.
The NHC is one of two specialist colleges in the UK (the other’s at Newmarket) dedicated solely to the horseracing industry. It opened on 1 July 1984 and after 39 years has had its fair share of success stories.
“There’s some huge names as you can imagine after 39 years,” said Zoe Horne, marketing team lead. “I myself came through the college, I did it 20-odd years ago so I’ve been there and worn the tshirt and all that.”
To name a few, the college’s alumni includes the likes of Danny Tudhope (flat jockey), Hollie Doyle (flat jockey), Rebecca Menzies (racehorse trainer) and Catriona Bissett (winner of the 2019 Godolphin Stud and Stable Staff Awards) have all passed through the doors in recent years.
For those people seeking their first taste of racing, the 12-week Foundation Course is the NHC’s most popular course and offers both riding and nonriding options, to ensure they have the necessary skills to gain employment in the racing industry. The course runs 365 days a year, can take up to 45 students at any one time, is a residential course which is succeeded by a six-week work placement. No experience is necessary and no qualifications are required; basically, if you love horses and want to work with them, this is the course for you.
“The course is open to anybody aged 16 and over and there’s no upper age limit,” added Zoe. “We have a gentleman who’s 73 on the course, although he doesn’t look a day over 50. He was an engineer his whole life and lived in Canada for a lot of it. We met him earlier this year up near Wetherby Racecourse, got chatting to him and he said he’d always wanted to lead a horse in the winner’s enclosure. Hopefully he’ll fulfil his dream.”
The course costs £500 and there are bursaries available.
“That’s less than £6 a day for food, accommodation and tuition,” said Zoe. “You can barely go and get a meal deal in a supermarket for that.”

Qualifications gained on the course include a Level 1 Award Introduction to the Racing Industry, Level 1 Diploma in Work-based racehorse care, functional maths and English skills, an emergency first aid certificate, and a Level 3 Award in the principles of transporting horses by road on short journeys. Of course there are life skills to be gained too, including cooking, nutrition, fitness, looking after your money and talks from speakers from NARS (the trade union for staff in the horse racing industry) and Racing Welfare.
Learners who successfully complete the Foundation Course and demonstrate their aptitude and commitment will be secured paid employment in a racing yard and will undertake the Level 2 Apprenticeship. This programme will include a Level 2 Equine Groom Apprenticeship Standard together with Functional Skills in English and maths at a minimum of Level 1.
As well as various other courses including those for jockeys, trainers,
secretaries and a Regional Staff Development Programme, the NHC also runs a 14-16-year-old programme. This two-year course is delivered one day each week during term time only and learners will have the opportunity for a scholarship which will enable them to race in Pony Club or Point-to-Point pony races on the NHC racing ponies. Successful completion can lead onto the
residential Foundation Course, progressing to an apprenticeship and employment with a racehorse trainer. Those with ambitions of becoming a jockey can participate in pony racing; the National Horseracing College holds training days for riders aged 9-15, which take place during the school holidays. The sessions are open to all, from those who have no previous experience of

race-riding, through to seasoned jockeys. Ponies of all shapes and sizes are welcome to take part. The overall aim of a training day is to improve the junior jockey’s position, technique and confidence whilst riding at speed and to develop their understanding of raceriding and the horseracing industry.
As befitting a national racehorse college, facilities at the NHC are top notch and include indoor riding arenas, woodchip gallops, grass gallops and racing simulators.
“Our biggest facility is the horses – we have 50+ retired racehorses,” said Zoe.
“That’s a huge number of horses who rely on us to feed them, to put a roof over their heads, shoes on their feet and all the rest of it, day in, day out. Our students work as if they were working in a racing yard. They feed the horses, muck the stables… you name it, they do it.”
The National Racehorse College is a charity with funding coming from the government and the racing industry as well as through fundraising. One of their biggest fundraising efforts comes in the form of the Leger Legends Race and Charity Lunch, which has been part of the St Leger Festival since 2010 and has raised in excess of £1million. This year it moves from its familiar Wednesday slot to Sunday, the fourth and final day of the festival. The Leger Legends Race is the only British charity race for exprofessional jockeys and has become one of the most fun and entertaining days in the racing calendar.
“It’ll be great to see how it works on a Sunday, it will very much be a family theme this year, children are welcome to
come along,” added Zoe. “Of course we have a keen interest in all the races at the St Leger because we might have students riding in them. We have a lot of graduated who participate in the races as jockeys and we’ll have students who’ll lead horses up (and hopefully lead winners in) and alumni who have trained these horses.”
If you’re a visitor to the St Leger Festival this year, take note of all those involved, chances are that a fair percentage of them will have come through the National Horseracing College.
“From racing grooms through to jockeys, racehorse trainers to secretaries, through to those who work on the starting stalls… you name it, we train them,” said Zoe.

New shopping experience
It’s been three years since Abi Priestley opened the Barn Café at Manor Farm in July 2020, which was quickly followed by the addition of a beauty salon, fashion boutique, gym and art studio. And Abi hasn’t rested on her laurels, recently opening a farm shop to add to the Oldcotes location’s offering.
“The vision for Manor Farm has always been to create a safe community space for people to meet, enjoy and feel a sense of belonging,” said Abi. “To provide opportunities for small flourishing businesses to set up and grow with the Farm Shop being the latest to arrive in the Courtyard.”
The new shop opens every day from 10am-4pm and is housed in the old piggery – the six bays remain intact – and with the beamed roof and original floor it still keeps its authentic rustic feel. You’ll find all your staples, such as milk, fresh orange juice and meat from Lawns Farm in Thurcroft, as well as flour, porridge oats and honey from North Leverton Mill. Other local producers include breads from the Welbeck Estate, fruit and vegetables from South Leverton, pies, puddings and cakes from Kevin, Thaymar ice cream, chutneys and preserves from Reedy’s, Yorkshire pasta and local sauces and pickles from Gastronomy.
Abi is also planning to expand into local
cheeses, biscuits and charcuterie very soon with deli accompaniments such as olives, chargrilled veg and stuffed peppers and other tasy meal accompaniments. She is also in the process of sourcing local drinks including beers, ales, gin and wine from local brewery’s and estates.
“You can’t miss the Farm Shop as there is a super display of plants just outside,” added Abi. “We have been stocking plants by local growers Giddy Kipper Plants for a number of years now and in the future we are planning to stock garden hardware and gifts in addition to the beautiful plants.”
Abi aims to grow the shop organically and is on the lookout for local producers – so please do get in touch. The ethos behind the Farm Shop is very much from ‘field to barn’.
Over the last three years Manor Farm has seen a steady increase in visitors with the Barn Café being one of the biggest attractions. In that time the café has extended its lunchtime offering to include
hearty meals – during winter the filled Yorkshire puddings proved particularly popular whilst the full English is the go-to dish for breakfast along with poached egg and avocado dishes. There is plenty of options for all dietary choices and with the new onsite Farm Shop fresh produce is being used every day as part of the menu!
Manor Farm continues to entertain and has been extremely busy with private celebrations and wedding receptions in the evenings. Baby showers are also proving especially popular.
Upcoming events include ‘Sing For Your Breakfast’, which is held on Tuesday mornings from 11am-1pm, October half-term pumpkin carving and Halloween disco, ‘A Night at the Musicals’ in November and a Christmas Market in December.
Abi’s future plans don’t stop with the farm shop and she’s always looking for opportunities to incubate new start-up businesses. Craft workshops are also becoming increasingly popular as well as Reiki, meditation and yoga sessions. It’s all happening at Manor Farm.

Star turn
A TRIP TO DN1 DELICATESSEN & DINING LEAVES RICHARD ABBEY IN A SPIN.
When you list the number of gadgets used by modern day chefs I’m guessing that a record player isn’t among them? But, on a recent visit to DN1 Delicatessen & Dining, we witnessed chef Oska Ready using the turntable to create perfect circles on the plates of several dishes. It worked perfectly.
This was just once small piece of theatre that formed part of an immersive experience at what is fast becoming one of Doncaster’s – if not Yorkshire’s – top foodie hot-spots but was one that definitely stuck in the mind.
DN1 Delicatessen & Dining was taken over by Martyn and Sarah Pippard last year. Martyn is perhaps best known as ‘The Gentleman Fishmonger’ and his Doncaster market stall is famed for its fine quality fish and seafood, much of which features on the menu at DN1.
Martyn already had a chef team
cooking on his market stall but the acquisition of the long-standing deli provided him with the opportunity to do something different. The result is a small restaurant within the deli where guests can dine either at the Chef’s Bench or in a small, intimate dining room.
“Inspired by esteemed culinary destinations like Harrods Food Hall or the bustling markets of Barcelona and Italy, we sought to create a harmonious blend, where the passion we have nurtured for our chefs could flourish alongside the international culinary treasures housed within the deli,” explained Martyn.
Martyn has four chefs on his books –Marcus Ashton-Simpson, Adam Barratt, Oska Ready and 16-year-old Taylor Firth – who split their time between the deli and market stall.
“We nurture our chefs and strongly believe in the vision to combine the
restaurant and the chef’s bench inside the deli to make it a unique destination venue and put Doncaster firmly on the culinary map,” he added.
We arrived on a Saturday evening and took a seat at the Chef’s Bench, which proved to be an experience only surpassed by the stunning food on offer. We watched the chefs chop, fry, stir and plate up every single dish and were blown away by the endeavour and attention to detail that you don’t often appreciate when you’re sat in the dining room.
We sampled head chef Marcus AshtonSimpson’s eight course tasting menu (£89 per person) with my wife also opting for the drinks pairing (£89). The latter saw wines from the UK, US, Austria, Spain, Portugal and Romania showcased as well as a sherry and cocktail to finish.
After ‘snacks’ of halibut and smoked

dill won ton with tom yum soup and onion macarons, we dove into the crab starter which consisted of homemade crumpets served with both white and brown crab, fermented chilli and sausage and a brown crab and chive butter. It was a punchy beginning and was balanced out by the next course, sea trout cured in peach beer and topped with sliced peaches.
Course number three came in the form of cod pan-fried in Marmite butter, which was served with an onion consommé. Dehydrated yeast crumb added further depth to the dish whilst a malt vinegar gel added little hits of tartness. The following pan-fried scallop served with fermented tomato and a Thai red curry-style sauce was perhaps the stand-out dish of the evening and was bursting with sweet, spicy, salty and sour flavours. Delicious.
There were two options for ‘main
course’ – tuna or pork (£5 supplement). I chose the former, which had been cooked four ways and consisted of a seared loin, belly confited in butter, a ragu, and a tartare tart, both made from the trimmings. Everything was wellcooked but we really loved the tart.
My wife chose the pork option; Spanish Iberico pork was cooked pink and complemented by a pork cheek bon bon, crispy pork belly bao bun and served with a rocket purée and smoked pork sauce.
On optional cheese course followed (£5 supplement) and saw Sauternessoaked blue cheese (exclusive to DN1) paired with honeycomb from three hives on the banks of the river Idle and crackers.
A trifle-esque pre-dessert combined olive oil jelly, rice pudding, olive oil polenta cake, pea panna cotta and pea mousse whilst the main dessert delivered
a sweet hit in the form of a white chocolate mousse with cherry insert and cherry sauce and liquorice ice cream.
If that wasn’t enough, coffee and passion fruit-inspired petit fours brought the evening to a close.
Three and five-course tasting menus are also available depending on the time of day and week but, take it from us, the eight-course one is a real chart-topper and worth three-and-a-half hours of anyone’s time.

“I’m Chintana, most people know me as Ton. I grew up in a village not far from the city of Ratchuburi in Thailand. I started cooking at a young age and used to cook for all my family. Mai Dang was my first restaurant I opened when I was 18 years old. Six Years later, I met my husband and we decided to start a family in Doncaster. Then this gave me the opportunity to open the first Thai Restaurant in Doncaster, The Bangkok Thai Restaurant. Ten years of running a successful business, we wanted to expand and we decided to open the Bangkok Royal Elephant. Now we’re starting a new chapter by opening the only Thai Restaurant in Doncaster, Thai At The Sal.”

Bags of style
THERE’S LOTS TO EXPLORE AT LAKESIDE VILLAGE AS CENTRE BAGS A BIG-NAME NEW STORE!
If you’ve not been to Lakeside Village Outlet Shopping in Doncaster for a while, pop on your shoes and head to the centre – you won’t need your bag, you can pick up a new one while you are there from the new Radley London store.
The new store opened its doors recently and has a fabulous range of accessories including handbags, purses, umbrellas and sunglasses.
With its famous Radley Scottie Dog tag the brand is a welcome addition to the centre bringing an extra element of style and fun to the City of Doncaster.
Di Mellis, centre manager at Lakeside Village, said: “We were absolutely thrilled to welcome Radley London to Lakeside Village, this is a fantastic brand and a great boost to the retail offer in the region.
“Our customers love it and it great to see the store so busy. Lakeside shoppers enjoy looking great and we’ve already seen how much they are enjoying shopping in the new store. Expect to see the Scottie dog on more people’s
shoulders and in their arms around South Yorkshire.”
As well as celebrating the arrival of Radley London the team at Lakeside Village, based on White Rose Way, have also welcomed new bed store Bensons Outlet to the centre.
Customers to the centre can now create their own beautiful bedroom space with a new bed from Bensons and pick up stylish bedding from Christy and Bedeck and accessorise the space with items from Lakeside Furniture Direct or Baytree Interiors.
“There is always something new at the
centre with Skechers opening in October 2023 and as well as new stores we’ve seen our Grape Tree store move and upsize and Greggs have also expanded their restaurant space.
“Etto Café is thriving, the welcoming space is extremely popular thanks to the great food and service. The team offer everything from breakfast to brunch, light bites to lunch and tasty Italian gelato. For an extra treat they provide a wonderful afternoon tea with finger sandwiches and the sweetest little cakes – it really is the place to be!
“Our monthly Artisan and Craft Fayres bring new products to the centre with a wide range of stalls offering everything from clothes for dogs to candles and sweet treats.
“One thing is for certain if you’ve not visited Lakeside Village for a while you’ll be in for a treat when you do,” added Di.

Don’t fall at the last fence…
MAKE SURE YOUR ST LEGER RACE
t’s that time of year again. The last glamourous race day of the season. I have had more enquiries than I can count, asking for help and advice to get my clients through it.
So saddle up ladies, time for some handy hints and tips.
Let’s start with some tried and tested rules…
Dress the part
For a chic race day look I recommend either a soft trouser suit or a dress. What do I mean by soft trouser suit? Nothing too formal, think a great pair of high-waisted trousers and a beautifully cut blouse or matching blazer. Both work brilliantly for this kind of event and can double up easily for a re-wear if you are attending an autumn wedding or dressy work event.
Dresses are another chic easy choice as you don’t have to think about matching separates, all you need is a great looking dress and you are good to go. If considering a dress, hemlines are key.
DAY LOOK REIGNS SUPREME!
Nothing too short, think just above the knee or anything below. There are some great options pictured here (left and below). The green and black are both stunning options available from Morgan Clare, Harrogate, which was voted one of Britain’s best boutiques by Vogue Magazine and the mermaid dress of dreams is by one of my favourite designers Sl’eau. Made from three layers of silk, this iridescent dress cut on the bias, will skim your curves beautifully and the simple demure cut, gives just the right nod to the trending nineties silhouette.
Either way, ensure your outfit has some kind of sleeve; the weather isn’t always kind to us at this time of year and sleeveless can be hard to pull off on a freezing cold race track.
Consider adding a blazer to your look which can be removed easily if temperatures spike. Wear it on your shoulders rather that putting your arms through the sleeves. It’s a chic way to cover up and it reveals your waistline, giving a more slimline feel to your look.
Shoes
As you’ll be spending a lot of the day outdoors you need to wear a shoe with a slightly wider heel so you don’t sink into the grass. A fluted, block, stack or wedge heel, all work well. It goes without saying, absolutely no beach flip flops.
Silky skin
If you are baring any skin, make sure to be moisturised to perfection and as the weather hasn’t been kind to us this summer I would also consider a spray tan. My best advice when booking a spray tan is to go for one with a fourhour developing time. Eight-hour tans can look very orange or, worst still, green on the wrong skin tone. What we are looking for is a nice chic even glow. Want to details on the perfect place to get a spray tan? Send me a message, I’m more than happy to share my little black book of amazing contacts.
