Cheers, enthusiasm... and gruelling climbs THE TOUR DE YORKSHIRE 2018, WHICH ARRIVES IN DONCASTER ON 3 MAY, LOOKS SET TO BE THE BIGGEST, BEST – AND TOUGHEST – YET, WRITES CAMILLA BROKENSHIRE.

he Tour de Yorkshire is coming to Doncaster next month (3 May), which means this tremendous and ever-growing sporting event will showcase our region to a world-wide audience.

Doncaster has a rich cycling heritage, as Tom Simpson, one of Britain’s most famous and influential cyclists, lived in nearby Haworth and married in Doncaster. Simpson was an iconic trailblazer when it came to cycling, being the first British rider to win the Men’s World Road Race.

Moving to the current day, Doncaster has a number of riders who have lit up the British cycling scene including, Graham Briggs, rider for JLT Condor, who won the British National Circuit Race Championships in 2011 and Madison Genesis youngster Connor Swift who, in 2017, won two rounds of the prestigious Tour Series.

In 2016, the Tour de Yorkshire made its debut in the town as Doncaster played host to

both the women’s race and stage two of the men’s race. The women’s race winner was Kirsten Wild and Danny Van Poppel, then of Team Sky, took TDY stage two in the men’s edition.

2018’s first stage has been named the ‘arts and culture’ stage, and as the route ends at Doncaster Racecourse this couldn’t be a more fitting title. The racecourse is one of the oldest centres for horse racing in Britain, and is home to the St Leger, the world’s oldest classic horse race.

On Thursday 3 May, Doncaster will welcome the finishers of the first stage of the men’s and women’s races. The route will enter Doncaster on a remote stretch of Sykehouse Road, cruising on to the beautiful village of Fishlake.

The riders will then go directly along the River Don and straight through the middle of Stainforth, passing by Hatfield and Hatfield Woodhouse. The riveting race will

come to a climax on Bennetthorpe, the same as when the Tour came to Doncaster in 2016. There were over one million people along the route on that particular day’s racing, with a large proportion of these spectators lining the 37 miles of the borough’s roads as the cyclists raced through to the finish.

2017’s tour generated an impressive £64million for the Yorkshire economy. When considering that 9.7 million people watched the action on television in 180 countries across the globe, it is easy to see the scale of the event and what a fantastic opportunity this is to showcase Doncaster to the world.

Sir Gary Verity, chief executive of Welcome to Yorkshire, who co-organised the tour with Amaury Sports Organisation, said: “The Tour de Yorkshire is a true success story and in just three years it has grown to become one of the best attended and most dramatic races on the cycling calendar.”

Following the tremendous success of the Tour de Yorkshire coming through Doncaster in 2016, when thousands lined the streets to watch elite cyclists battle it out, cycling has continued to grow in popularity with more and more people joining local clubs, and events like Doncaster Cycle Festival growing every year.

With this significant history, it’s bound to make an even bigger impact on Doncaster this year. The challenging landscape and local support mean that Yorkshire has also been selected to host the 2019 UCI Road World Championships.

Sir Gary Verity added: “The Tour de Yorkshire is a true success story and in just three years it has grown to become one of the best attended and most dramatic races on the cycling calendar.

“Of course, with the men’s race being extended to four days and the women’s race now being held over two, it means we can visit more parts of the county and I know our eight start and finish locations will put on a real show.”

Lancers on target IMMUNE TO THE VAGARIES OF FASHION, THIS BAWTRY FAVOURITE LIVES UP TO A REPUTATION FORGED OVER 20 YEARS, WRITES CHRIS WILSON. s anyone who indulges in a spot of retail therapy in the upmarket stores of Bawtry will know, fashions change all the time.

Hemlines rise and fall, trouser legs flap in the breeze or hug the ankles depending on what this year’s look is deemed to be, lapels go from skinny to wide in the blink of an eye.

The restaurant world is just as vulnerable to the passing trends as the fashion industry, so for a venue to retain loyal customers and continue to cultivate new ones over two decades is a rarity.

Hats off then to the team at Lancers Restaurant for providing first rate Indian cuisine to the curry connoisseurs of Bawtry since February 1994.

Sajidur Rahman opened Lancers 20 years ago and is still at the helm. He’s witnessed many changes in the town over the years but reckons Bawtry’s strengths have remained constant.

“Bawtry is always busy, and it feels like the centre for all the little villages that surround it. When people come for a night out they know there is going to be a great choice of restaurants and bars, and it is nice to be a part of that.”

One thing that has changed is the variety of dishes offered by the talented Lancers chefs as the menu keeps getting bigger.

“A lot of customers have their favourites but we always try to put something different on the menu, added Mr Rahman. “Then the new dishes become somebody’s favourite and we don’t know what to leave out.”

especially when everything on the menu is cooked from fresh.

“If you can’t see what you want on the menu just ask…we have the fresh herbs and spices, we have talented chefs, that’s what they do.”

But with a wide range of Indian classics, regional specialities and Mr Rahman’s own personal favourites, that isn’t likely to happen very often.

I visited Lancers with my friend Glyn, who became something of a curry connoisseur during his studies at Bradford University, around the time Lancers was just opening.

Finding himself in digs surrounded by classic no-frills Indian cafes, he didn’t cook at all, surrendering himself to the spicy delights of Britain’s curry capital.

So with my expert witness as back-up we tackled the Lancers menu, starting with crisp and fresh popadoms (£0.90) and a pickle tray (£2.90) including spicy lime pickle and mild mango chutney.

For starters Glyn’s mixed kebab (£6.50) included a spicy sheek kebab with the fresh lamb flavour shining through and a lovely chilli kick. By contrast my prawn puri (£4.80) was mild, creamy and comforting.

We chose contrasting mains. My chicken jalfrezi (£9.90) was listed as one of the owner’s favourites and the combination of tender chicken with onions, tomato, green pepper, coriander and fresh green chillies was hugely satisfying. The spicier dishes on the Lancers menu are rated between one and three chillies on the menu. This was given two chillies and, even for a dedicated lover of spicy food like me, was properly hot. I’d

suggest the handful of three-chilli dishes are strictly for hard-core heat-seekers.

Glyn selected one of the recent menu additions, Tamil lamb, and this sharp, tangy treat from Southern India, with mouthwatering pieces of tender lamb, is well worth investigating if you fancy something different.

Side dishes can make all the difference in Indian cuisine and we shared perfectly cooked pilau rice (£2.90), a peshwari naan (£3.20) with delicious charred edges packed with flaked pistachios and raisins and a deliciously rich bowl of tarka dhal (£3.50).

With pints of Cobra (£4.40) to quench our thirsts we also shared a jug of salty lassi (not on the menu but Mr Rahman was true to his word, delivering a sharp and moreish version of this mix of chilled water, yoghurt and spices that seems slightly different wherever you go).

Lancers is entering its third decade looking as sharp as ever. Good taste never goes out of fashion.

But despite The Earl of Doncaster’s classy art deco style and four-star status, their new Café Bar Concerto menu, along with their friendly and approachable staff, signal a new era for the hotel restaurant – one where everyone is invited.

“We used to have an a la carte menu in the restaurant, which featured more high-end food,” explained food and beverage manager, Andrea. “We launched the new Café Bar in February and it’s been a big hit with local residents and corporate guests. We found that our hotel guests didn’t want that kind of thing – they want a home from home that serves comfort food.”

Curiosity piqued, Eastside publishing manager Terri Moore, sales executive Rebecca Hume, myself and my friend Shauna Naylor went to see and taste the food for ourselves.

The menu was full of pub classics, with everything from burgers to steaks and fish options from the grill. While we pondered this, Terri ordered a sauvignon blanc (175ml £4.70) and I, being the designated driver, ordered a black magic mocktail (£4.95), a refreshing apple pineapple and blackcurrant

drink decorated with berries.

Meanwhile, Rebecca and Shauna were excited by the wide range of gins on offer – well, when in the 1920s. Rebecca settled on the Williams pink grapefruit gin (£7) with an aromatic tonic and Shauna had the Williams Seville orange gin (£7) with rose lemonade.

We were suitably satisfied with our varied starters. I had the baked cheddar mushroom (£5.95), which sat on a brioche and was both tangy and sweet owing to the balsamic vinegar. Terri’s homemade Yorkshire pudding (£5.95) had disappeared when I was only two bites in, Shauna was delighted with her panko breaded calamari (£6.95) and Rebecca liked the way her classic prawn cocktail (£6.95) was deconstructed with Marie Rose sauce on the side.

For mains, Shauna’s meat cravings were satisfied by the rosemary-infused slow roasted lamb shank (£16.95) and Rebecca was praising her belly pork (£14.95). Terri had once again cleared her plate where a Cajun blackened salmon (£16.95) with sweet potato fries had once sat and I was amazed by my vegetarian fish and chips (£9.95) – a huge beer battered piece of halloumi balanced on top of chip shop chips and mushy peas.

My homemade Bakewell tart (£5.95), Shauna’s chocolate brownie (£5.95), Terri’s classic crème brulée and Rebecca’s Yorkshire cheeseboard (£7.95) all made for varied and comforting desserts and rounded thing off nicely.

So if you are looking for a glitzy venue, but with a no-nonsense menu, The Earl of Doncaster is the place to go. And with Curry Night every Tuesday, Grill Night every Thursday and a Sunday lunch special, there’s always a good time to dine in the Café Bar Concerto.

The Tyram Lakes Hotel, Spa and Resort puts Doncaster on the map Since Rothgen Capital UK announced the launch of their latest funding round for The Tyram Lakes Hotel, Spa and Resort in Hatfield, Doncaster has been attracting a significant amount of new attention.

With infrastructure improving weekly, and demonstrable confidence from some of the world's best known companies, the luxury property sector is finally taking notice.

One of these sector members is Rothgen Capital’s Tyram Lakes project, which uses cutting-edge ecological and eco-friendly innovations as its basis and is leading the field in this kind of development, thus of particular interest to energy-focussed investors and the media alike.

In the centre of the Humberside Peatlands, Hatfield Moor and the National Nature Reserve in South Yorkshire, plans are approved for 325 luxury eco-lodges set on and around 65 acres of lakes adjacent to 100 acres of natural woodlands.

Doncaster Business for the Community to light up its fundraising Doncaster Business for the Community (DB4C) is to hold its 11a-side football challenge for business owners, The Doncaster Business Community Cup, on Friday 25 May at the Keepmoat Stadium.

New centre manager for Lakeside Village The Doncaster retail sector welcomes a new face this month, as a new centre manager takes up the reins at Lakeside Village.

David Aunins joins the team at the popular outlet shopping centre, from a dual management post running the Foundry shopping centre in Scunthorpe and the Priory shopping centre in Worksop.

He takes over from John Magee, who will become the Centre Manager of the Princes Quay shopping centre in Hull.

Melissa named most inspirational woman Fenwood Estates MD Melissa Kroger has been named The Most Inspirational Woman in Construction 2017 – South Yorkshire.

Melissa has been involved in the property and development industry for more than 15 years. She has played a part in the design, marketing and construction of many new homes, as well as commercial projects that Fenwood Estates have undertaken. Her main role has been to source and buy sites and then work with the architects to design and secure planning permissions. She then oversees all of the sales and marketing of Fenwood’s new homes.

Melissa said: “Wow! what an amazing award to be presented with! It isn’t an easy industry to be involved in as a woman and I have come across many instances where I have felt both in meetings and on site that the men especially from the older generation think, ‘what does she know?’ but I absolutely love my job and I know the industry inside out!
