“The idea of selling a house would normally fill me with dread. I’ve never really had a good experience and always viewed it as something that you just have to put up with. This year, that perception has changed. From the start of the process with Open Door, I felt confident that Shaun and his team were going to work very hard to initially market my property with a view to sell. Within hours, the property was on the market with a realistic asking price. Soon after, Shaun was filling his diary with viewings and made sure that buyers were visiting the property within a quick timeframe. This resulted in a sale at a price that I was extremely happy with. Overall, I received an exceptional service from Shaun and the team at Open Door.” James W from Doncaster “When I decided to sell my house, I contacted Open Door and was visited at a time to suit me by Shaun who explained everything about the company's service. Shaun then left his contact details, giving me time to think about things. I contacted Shaun again and he returned to see me and take photos of my house himself so that it could be advertised. This was on a Monday. On the Thursday (three days later), Shaun brought two prospective buyers to view my home. He then negotiated a very good sale price for me with the buyers and my house was sold - amazingly, within three days of being advertised. I jokingly said to Shaun that he was like a little terrier who does not let go until he has secured the deal! To summarise, Shaun from Open Door did a fantastic job; he was very professional; and he kept me updated throughout. He dealt with absolutely everything - all I had to do was sit back and let Shaun do his work, which he did to an extremely high standard. If anyone out there is considering using Open Door to sell their home, my advice would be: ‘go ahead, you will not regret it.” Sandra F from Dunscroft

CREATE YOUR OWN GREAT BRITISH BAKE OFF KITCHEN.
The recipe for success s the summer heats up, it can only mean one thing: it’s time for the return of The Great British Bake Off to our screens. Prue, Paul and the team will be back in the famous tent this August for our annual blast of sugar, showstoppers and soggy bottoms. If the show inspires you to embrace your inner domestic goddess, there’s no need to stop once the technical challenges are over. Create your own extra slice by bringing the look and feel of the Bake Off kitchen into your home. Here are some ideas from Wren Kitchens to get you started...
A
PERFECT PASTELS
If you close your eyes and picture the Great British Bake Off, you’ll see picture perfect baking stations complete with pastel units and accessories. The colour palette available from Wren Kitchens’ Macaroon Collection includes some perfect pastel blues, greens, lavenders and lemons so you can recreate this look at home. Try pretty Jelly Bean, Bubblegum, Lavender, Spearmint and Lemon Curd from Wren’s new Macaroon Collection. Or opt for a gentle neutral scheme with soft creams or whites and add a splash of pastel paint on your kitchen walls to bring the whimsical look of the Bake Off kitchen into your home. Accessories are a great way to introduce more colour - and what says Bake Off more than a KitchenAid stand mixer? These fantastic appliances make baking a dream and, among the colours on offer are Ice Blue and Pistachio so you can step into the shoes of the Bake Off contestants. And who says white goods have to be white? Choose a fridge in a range of pretty pastels from Smeg’s 50s Retro Style Fridge Freezer in Pastel Blue, or go for that authentic Bake Off look by choosing their showstopping curved Gorenje Retro Freestanding Fridge Freezer in Champagne. SIGNATURE STYLE
The Great British Bake Off kitchen is all about nostalgia for a traditional country kitchen. From the trademark bunting to the shaker-style units, the vibe captures the charm
of days gone by. You can get the look with Wren’s charming Shaker, Country and Edwardian kitchens with their panelled units and traditional handle options. All available in a wide range of colours. Break up that modular fitted kitchen feel with a choice of bespoke feature units. An open dresser unit is perfect for displaying your vintage crockery with pride. Open shelves in tower units or at the end of a run add to the timeless feel of a kitchen - as well as offering easy access and convenient storage. ISLAND PARADISE
Be the star of your own show with every baker’s dream - a kitchen island all to yourself for prepping, mixing and decorating. At Wren Kitchens you can sit with an expert Kitchen Designer and create an island that is perfect for your dream kitchen. Style it up with open shelves and finish it off with a cook’s table suited for all baking connoisseurs. Accessorise with vintage bowls, cooking tools, and wicker baskets to store those yummy ingredients. There are hundreds of special features to choose from; your island will be entirely unique, so be sure to inject all your personality into it. You can even make your
island an efficient workstation, just like those seen on the Bake Off. Add stacks of drawer units and appliances such as a fridge or wine cooler, build in a hob and a Belfast sink with an antique brass tap; the possibilities are endless. WONDERFUL WORKTOPS
A staple of the Great British Bake Off kitchen is the traditional timber worktop. A timber worktop is a lovely surface to work on and gives a warm finish to any kitchen. Like a Shaker kitchen - timber worktops work just as well in modern or period homes. Timber worktops at Wren Kitchens are made from the highest quality Danish-sourced wood produced to exacting standards with a lustrous, silky smooth finish. Available in Oak and Walnut and in two thicknesses, you can choose the right shade for your kitchen. Serious bakers can bring the features of a professional kitchen into their own home by integrating a Carrara marble pastry slab into their worktop. Marble maintains a low temperature which helps to keep pastry cool and stops dough from sticking for a perfect bake. A PROFESSIONAL-STANDARD OVEN
However good your baking skills, a sub standard oven will let you down. Spend time researching all the various features that different ovens include - from warming drawers to sliding doors - and think about what you value as a baker. For an oven with everything, look no further than the NEFF Slide&Hide® Oven, available from Wren Kitchens, which comes complete with the sliding door feature seen on the Great British Bake Off and 12 different heating methods several of which are designed with bakers in mind including the Bread Baking and Dough Proving settings. The perfect place to start your Bake Off transformation journey is your local Wren Kitchens Showroom where you can feast your eyes on the full range of units, colours, worktops, appliances and accessories. MEET THE CHEF
Meet the chef A SELECTION OF LOCAL COOKS SHARE THEIR KITCHEN SECRETS, CULINARY LOVES AND FOODIE INFLUENCES. BY HANNAH SANDERS. t’s an exciting life being a chef. If you can take the long hours and stand the heat of the kitchen, the rewards of knowing you have produced a perfect plate of food and sent the customer home satisfied are worth all the effort. Many chefs seek inspiration from famous names around the world, and some may even use their qualifications as an excuse for a
globetrotting lifestyle... from cruise ships to holiday resorts to hotels in every big city on the planet. If you can cook and are struck by the wanderlust it can be a case of “have knives, will travel.” But what inspires the chefs who are making a name for themselves closer to home? We talk to some local food heroes.
Dalton Hutchinson
Mark Lawrence
I
31 Market Place Cocktail Bar & Bistro/The Cellar at 31 Market Place Dalton Hutchinson was inspired to become a chef after baking and cooking with his grandparents from a very young age. And now, taking inspiration from culinary heroes Marco Pierre and Raymond Blanc, Dalton produces delicious, mouth-watering food for both the Market Place Cocktail Bar & Bistro and The Cellar. “Marco Pierre and Raymond Blanc are fantastic chefs. I really like their passion as it flows through into their food. “The Bar & Bistro serves up great quality seasonal dishes, while The Cellar offers a varied seafood and Mediterranean menu which is something new for Bawtry. We’ve had some exciting new changes recently – at the Bistro we have a new lunchtime menu, a new evening menu of French-inspired contemporary dishes and a delicious Sunday lunch. The Cellar has been refurbished and is frankly a lovely place to eat and relax with a nice bottle of wine, champagne or cocktail, and we’ve designed the food to pair with our drinks offering. “During summer I like cooking with fish, fresh fruits and greens. I wouldn’t say there’s one dish that sums me up – as long as it’s seasonal, fresh and great quality.” 31 Market Place, Bawtry, Doncaster, DN10 6JL Tel: 01302 538827
Walkers Garden Restaurant
Mark Lawrence, chef at Walkers Garden Restaurant, was inspired to enter the culinary world by his step-mum, and now takes inspiration from Ina Garten for her good home food cooking with an added twist. “I would say that one of my strengths (and the restaurant’s) is our fantastic team. Everyone works together, and it’s a real family atmosphere. “Now the warmer months are here, it means I can create more fish dishes, focusing on sustainable seafood. At Walkers I cook like I would cook if I had friends or family coming to my house for dinner – simply put it’s good, home-cooked food. “We’ve recently added some more homemade vegan options to the menu, and they’re proving popular which is fantastic. “Five years’ down the line, I still see myself working at Walkers but hopefully in a much bigger restaurant.” Mosham Road, Blaxton, DN9 3BA Tel: 01302 770564 www.walkersnurseries.tv
Keegan Loveday
The Crown Hotel, Bawtry The Crown Hotel’s apprentice chef, Keegan Loveday, has followed in the steps of his grandma and dad who were both trained chefs. “My grandma was a chef in a school, while my dad cooked in an Italian restaurant so I have grown up with cooking and just became really interested in it as a career from a young age. I also take inspiration from Gordan Ramsay as his passion is just infectious. “I was just so excited to join a professional team of people at the Crown who all have lots of passion and work so hard. The Crown is so busy, each and every day is different. “I enjoy cooking with fish – particularly seabass and scallops, but you just can’t beat a good steak anytime of the year and our 30day aged sirloin is outstanding, served with fries, onion rings and a sauce of your choice. “The Crown launched a new a la carte menu a few months ago, but also added a new vegetarian and vegan menu which has gone down really well. We offer a specials menu every Friday and Saturday which changes each week and are always delicious. The new dessert menu is also stunning and the dessert sharing platter is just heaven. “Hopefully five years’ down the line I will still be at the Crown but having moved my way up and been promoted – I am very hungry and eager to learn.” Market Place, Bawtry, Doncaster, DN10 6JW Tel: 01302 710341 www.crownhotel-bawtry.com Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk 23

EATING OUT
Ray of light IS THERE A BETTER PLACE TO DRINK AND DINE OUTSIDE? CHRIS WILSON ENJOYS HIS DAY IN THE SUN. hen I told a colleague I was eating at The Sun Inn in Everton, she asked me to check out whether it was ‘a normal pub or a gastro pub.’ I’m still pondering that one, but if you haven’t visited this former coaching inn since last summer’s comprehensive refurb, prepare to be amazed. As befits the name, the first thing you notice is a fantastic beer garden and outdoor dining area that really came into its own during the recent heatwave. With immaculately maintained hanging baskets and flowerbeds it’s a gorgeous feast for the eyes. Add some lovely swing seats, a fire pit, Prosecco truck and pizza bar and you have the perfect recipe for a lazy summer afternoon or evening. Meanwhile inside the pub is relaxed and spacious with a large dining area and plenty of room for drinkers too. We came for lunch on one of the hottest days of this sensational summer, and with the conservatory-style doors folded back we took a shady table on the border where pub meets beer garden. Whether you’re after a light bite or the full three courses, there’s a menu to match your mood and appetite, from sandwiches and pizzas to hearty pub favourites and more sophisticated bistro-style dishes. There are daily specials, too, which suggest chef/manager Kevin McCallum is very ambitious to establish The Sun Inn (tellingly labelled as a ‘pub and kitchen’) as a standalone food venue. From the first mouthful it was obvious that he is succeeding.

My friend Kathleen and I both chose our starters from the daily specials and I was blown away by my confit belly pork with nduja sausage scotch egg (£7.70). Red meat is an occasional treat for me in these healthconscious times, and this was a hearty plateful guaranteed to remind me of what I’ve been missing. The belly pork was slow-cooked to perfection with a sensational shard of salty crunchy crackling on top. The scotch egg, bursting with flavour from that devilishly spicy Italian salami paste, was another surefire winner. Kathleen’s starter was equally impressive. Seared scallops (four big ones, hearty portions definitely come as standard) were moist and fresh, served on a bed of spiced cauliflower purée with onion bhajis, coriander and fresh coconut shavings (£11.50). For mains, having thrown caution to the wind, I went all out with a steak and wild mushroom pie (£12.95) served with mash, peas and a jug of gravy. Many pubs have pie on the menu but the genuine article takes time and love and this was a thing of beauty, an individual pie with delicious shortcrust pastry, crumbling perfectly to reveal a gorgeous meaty filling in rich gravy. Simple, and in its own way, perfect. Kathleen continued down the seafood route with seared bream fillets (£15.95) served with new potatoes, fennel, heritage tomatoes and a chive and grapefruit hollandaise that provided a lovely sharpness and proved, once again, that a menu containing plenty of familiar comfort food dishes is also striving to be a little different.
You’re probably thinking this was quite an indulgent lunch and you’d be right. Other diners were sticking to a more modest single course and those pizzas, thin and crispy, really looked the part. But as we were celebrating Kathleen’s hard-earned 2:1 Spanish degree, belts were loosened and desserts called for. A refreshingly light passion fruit Eton mess (£6.50) and satisfyingly substantial peanut butter cheesecake (£6.50) rounded things off in style. There’s a nicely balanced wine list including a great selection by the glass. A crisp Chenin Blanc (£5.60) and a smooth, peppery Malbec (£5.70) were both several notches above your average pub chain tipples. So, normal pub or gastro pub? The very best of both I’d say, and if you need a definitive answer I’ll just have to go back for another look... no hardship there. “I’m Chintana, most people know me as Ton. I grew up in a village not far from the city of Ratchuburi in Thailand. I started cooking at a young age and used to cook for all my family. Mai Dang was my first restaurant I opened when I was 18 years old. Six Years later, I met my husband and we decided to start a family in Doncaster. Then this gave me the opportunity to open the first Thai Restaurant in Doncaster, The Bangkok Thai Restaurant. Ten years of running a successful business, we wanted to expand and we decided to open the Bangkok Royal Elephant. Now we’re starting a new chapter by opening the only Thai Restaurant in Doncaster, Thai At The Sal.”

EATING OUT
Anyone for tea? PHOEBE SEYMOUR FINDS THAT AFTERNOONS ARE PRETTY SPECIAL AT WALKERS. lthough afternoon tea has become a more common dining experience in recent years, it’s still synonymous with ladies of leisure or is reserved for special occasions. So my friend, Shauna, and I were quite giddy about attending Walkers Nursery & Garden Centre’s afternoon tea event in the middle of a working day to celebrate nothing in particular. Walker’s Afternoon Tea events have been running since the Potting Shed cafe was opened four years ago, and they have slowly but surely gained popularity. They now host afternoon tea events on Mondays and Tuesdays, from 2pm until 4pm. As we entered the greenhouse, we were impressed by the gorgeous swirling patterns on the crockery and the wildflowers delicately placed in green bottles on the tables. As we admired the fluttering butterflies and tiny birds that had made their way into the greenhouse, I couldn’t help feeling like I’d entered a Disney film. With the cups and saucers ready to be charged, we wasted no time in ordering our tea. I went for a quintessentially British, Earl Grey, while Shauna broke with tradition and ordered a strawberries and cream tea. Some herbal teas can taste weak, even when they’ve fully infused, but this one was full-flavoured and fruity, while my Earl Grey was strong with a delicate smoky yet zesty flavour.
A
A stage had been set up at the end of the greenhouse, and as our two towers of food arrived, Max Bowker of local swing group, The Bowkers, started serenading the room. The shirt and braces-clad singer smoothly made his way through songs by Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra and Nat King Cole, before performing unexpected songs such as I Wanna Be Like You from The Jungle Book. Maybe I had been transported to a Disney film after all. Shauna had the classic afternoon tea option, so her bottom tier included three finger sandwiches; cucumber and cream cheese, egg mayonnaise, and ham, as well as a mini sausage roll. As I had the vegetarian option, I had the same, except a delicious mozzarella, tomato and pesto sandwich in place of the ham, and a light and flaky mini mushroom tart in place of the sausage roll. As I was making my way through the savoury section, I looked up to find Shauna had already made a start on the top sweet tier. We both had the same dessert which included a generous square slab of lemon drizzle cake, topped with butter cream and a pansy for decoration, a cream and jam filled scone and a miniature chocolate shortbread topped with speckles of gold – a pudding fit for royalty. All of the mini desserts tasted freshly baked and gave us a good variety to enjoy. And just
when we thought this course was over, our waiter brought over two shot glasses filled with trifles. With a spirit-drenched layer of strawberries and a sweet and creamy layer of custard, the trifles were beautifully balanced and brought the experience to a satisfying close. Just as afternoon tea is now available to all classes, it is thankfully now open to all bank balances too. Walker’s Afternoon Tea is just £20 for two people, and if it is a particularly special occasion, you can add two glasses of prosecco for an extra £6. So if you thought you couldn’t afford to be a lady of leisure, think again. Take the day to indulge at Walkers. It’s a shore thing PHOEBE SEYMOUR ENJOYS A RELAXING MEAL BY THE IDYLLIC BARNBURGH LAKES. rom smooth ripples, to soothing sounds, water has an undeniably relaxing effect on people. And as my sister Naomi and I sipped prosecco in the sun, while gazing over Barnburgh Lakes, with its swooping birds and graceful fountain, our worries were all forgotton… “I don’t feel like I’m in Donny!” exclaimed Naomi, first to break the silence. And she was right, the hustle and bustle of the town centre seemed much farther than a few miles away. It was apparent from the moment we arrived that Bulrush Bistro had mastered the art of ambience. Located in the rolling hills of Barnburgh, this light, airy and modern bistro not only has fantastic views outside, but a gorgeous atmosphere inside too. After enjoying bread and olives alongside our sparkling glasses of R&R prosecco (200ml mini bottle, £4.95) in the sunshine, we were seated at a table inside by the large windows, where we still had a great view of the patio and the fishing lake, but could enjoy the Spanish guitar music and warm décor of the dining area. The huge windows that go all the way around the building give you panoramic views of the countryside and nearby village, and the driftwood-style tables and chairs and nautical lampshades make you feel as though

the Mediterranean can’t be far away. The food was just as Med-inspired. I started with a minestrone soup (£7), and though this may strike you as a more winter dish, this one was a light tomato broth with delicate pieces of pasta hoops, accompanied by a warm, seeded, charcoal bun. Naomi’s cool and creamy chicken pate (£7.50) was wrapped in lettuce leaves, giving it the appearance of Greek stuffed vine leaves. Accompanied by a sweet and tangy cranberry sauce, she piled the pate high on crisp pieces of bruschetta so as not to waste a drop Still going down the Italian route, I chose the gnocchi (£14) as my main. Freshly made, each piece was satisfyingly soft, yet not sticky – a testament to both the way they were created and the way they were boiled to perfection. This was presented in a tangy tomato pesto sauce, filled with olives and pancetta. In search of variety, Naomi chose the pig three ways (£16), which featured a generous and tender centre piece of honey glazed pork, a crisp jamon croquette and a locally-sourced Barnsley black pudding. These were presented with boulders of roast potatoes and finished off with a huge bowl of roasted carrots and parsnips (£3.50), which I couldn’t help picking at.
Naomi finished with a light and creamy crème brûlée (£7), with an enviable caramelised lid, which made a satisfying tap as she dug into it. I couldn’t resist the Cointreau and orange crepes (£7). Curled pieces of orange peel packed an extra zingy punch, but with three crepes to devour, I soon realised my eyes were much bigger than my belly. Though we’d only been at Bulrush Bistro for a couple of hours, we left feeling rejuvenated, as though we’d had a miniholiday. If you are looking for a taste of the Mediterranean, it’s closer than you think – on the outskirts of Doncaster. A cut above STEAK, PIZZA AND ‘THE BEST’ G&T’S – COLEMAN’S STEAKHOUSE IS A HOME FROM HOME FOR HANNAH SANDERS. f your tastebuds start to tingle when you hear mention of a delicious cut of T-bone, rib-eye, fillet, sirloin, rump, wagyu steaks or ribs, then Bawtry’s very own steakhouse is the place for you. Nestled in the heart of the popular market town, Coleman’s Steakhouse is all about the meat. It’s hung for a minimum of 30 days ensuring maximum flavour – and enjoyment. But that’s not the end of the line, as the steaks are cooked in an open kitchen – which fills the whole restaurant with the most tempting aromas. With so many tantalising dishes on the menu, it was difficult to decide. So to help us through the process our waiter brought us over one of the best G&T’s I’ve ever had; Brockman’s gin mixed with rose lemonade, garnished with fresh mint and lime (£6.90); smooth, but big on taste, and you get some heat from the botanicals, before all the flavours harmonise. My partner is a fan of all things barbecue, so Coleman’s sticky cola bbq rib fingers (£7) were just to his liking; melting in the mouth and coated in a tangy bbq sauce, he couldn’t get enough. I opted for the piri piri chicken

skewers (£6.25) which were marinated for 24 hours in a sweet and slightly spicy sauce and grilled to perfection. For mains my other half (of course) opted for the 14oz sirloin steak; deliciously tender with a rich and buttery flavour. It was complemented by the creamy brandy and peppercorn sauce (£3), homemade chips, rocket salad drizzled with balsamic vinegar, a slow-roasted garlic tomato and finished with crispy onion rings. After giving longing glances to the homemade pizzas coming out of the oven, I chose the goats cheese, spinach one (£9.95) but opted to add chicken to the toppings (£1.50). Now, I wouldn’t class myself as a pizza connoisseur, but this one was a step above; the crisp savoury dough perfectly matched the fresh spinach, rich and creamy cheese along with the succulent pieces of chicken. After a brief respite – which included another G&T, because why not? – we decided it was time to choose our desserts. My partner immediately settled on the white chocolate and raspberry cheesecake (£4.50), served with a side of vanilla ice
cream. The rich flavour was complemented by the sweet raspberry and fresh mint garnish. I opted for something lighter with the lemon tart (£4.50); the pastry was smooth with tartness of the lemon being enhanced by the fresh raspberries, providing a refreshing end to the meal. Coleman’s Steakhouse is without a doubt one of the best places to dine if you’re looking for a hearty delicious meal, but it’s the attentive service and welcoming atmosphere that keeps locals and visitors flocking in. Making jam is a British pastime, and Rachel Whittaker, owner of The Jam Horse, combines her love of cookery, fresh produce and all things food to supply Doncaster and the surrounding areas with some of the very best homemade preserves, rubs, chutneys and relishes. After the birth of her second child, Rachel decided she didn’t want to return to her previous role, instead wanting a job that offered the flexibility to fit around her son. Starting life as a baby food company, the business gradually grew into one producing homemade jams and chutneys, and after these proved more popular, Rachel rebranded. So The Jam Horse was born. Here, she talks about the inspiration behind the company name, her soon-to-open shop in Doncaster town centre, and offers up some advice for budding female entrepreneurs.
Where does your recipe inspiration come from?
What’s the inspiration behind the name Jam Horse?
Tell me about your new shop?
T
My favourite things (apart from my children, of course) are horses and jam, so it was an obvious choice to combine the two. The logo – named Jammie the Horse – was designed by Dave Bull, a really talented illustrator. I asked him to create a cross between The Stripy Horse and Bullseye sitting on a pile of fruit, and he hit the nail on the head first time.
My mum was a qualified cooking teacher, and taught me what flavour combinations go well together. I am also known for concocting things, and some of my ideas fall flat on their face while others, like the sprout relish, really take off. I’m currently in the process of perfecting my pear chutney recipe. So at the moment I have 14kg of pears in my kitchen, and soon my group of testers – family and friends – will be taste testing. What’s the favourite part of your job?
The fact that I can work my family life around my job. My children can come to work with me, and I love that because they can see how everything is done, so when they are older they can chip in. I also love seeing a customer’s face when they try a product. It brings me so much joy to see that what I create puts such a smile on their face.
Adrian Banks, Business Doncaster, is so passionate about developing the town, and he’s been saying for a long time that he wants me in the town centre. He convinced me to come down and look at a few units, and then I just couldn’t say no. I’m planning on not only selling my own products, but non-competitive ones, like Chilli Pepper Pete, Ajika and Dreambakes. I will also be doing waffles and crepes – as what goes better with jam?
What’s one of your favourite products?
I would have to say lemon curd. Firstly because it’s amazing, and it also holds an emotional pull with me. It’s one of the first things that I cooked with my grandma, so in a way it’s an ode to her.

Looking back, is the business everything you imagined?
I’ve said before that if I had known the toll it would take on our family life, the cost and stress, I never would have done it. Although,
now, I wouldn’t change a thing. I am so proud of what I have achieved. Which recent awards have stood out to you?
The Theo Paphitis Small Business Sunday (SBS) one. There are thousands of entries every week and Theo handpicks six each Sunday, so it was fantastic to win that. Once you join SBS, you are invited along to a conference every year where you are presented with fantastic opportunities. Also the #WOW Badge, because it was awarded to me by Jacqueline Gold, a big advocate for women in business. To be recognised and championed by someone like her for what you do, is just incredible. What advice would you give to budding entrepreneurs?
Take a leap of faith. Once you do, you’ll be surprised by what you are capable of doing. And remember never to give up. Finally, is there anything you would like to say to your customers?
More than anything, what has meant the most to me through the whole process is the support of local people and businesses. I wouldn’t have a company without them putting their faith in me – so thank you. The community of Doncaster is so supportive of each other which is fantastic. We all work hard to champion each other, and want everyone to succeed in everything they do. Also, thank you to my dad – I couldn’t have done any of it without his support, he has been an absolute star, and Michelle from DMBC food safety has helped me so much. EATING OUT
Full of surprises
SUNNYBANK IS MUCH MORE THAN A GARDEN CENTRE – THERE’S NOW A STYLISH NEW RESTAURANT. RACHEL MARTIN DROPPED BY. unnybank Gardens needs a little introduction; there’s a reason it is a must-visit destination for many, including my colleague and I. It is a chance to get close to nature, with friendly staff on hand to talk about perennials, bedding and basket plants, climbers and trees, not to mention, it is famed for its homemade Yorkshire ice cream. Over the years Sunnybank Gardens has diversified and has grown into a visitor attraction, with people travelling long distances – and that means catering for them. The newest makeover is the Cowshed, a stylish restaurant serving breakfasts and dinners, which offers a varied menu and beautiful decor, as well as a gift shop. The restaurant had a welcoming feel as we arrived in search of comfort food; it’s clearly a room that’s been put together by an expert, and hardly the sort of place you expect to find in the middle of nowhere. The first surprise when we stepped through the door was that the place was so packed on a Tuesday afternoon; the second surprise was the vast range of food, from traditional awardwinning steak and ale pie and Whitby scampi to quiche salad and gluten-free options. We started off with an Americano (£2.30), Fentimans Dandelion and Burdock and

Victoria lemonade (both £2.65), and Hannah ordered the club sandwich (£6.75) – a toasted triple decker filled with bacon, chicken, lettuce, tomato and mayonnaise – which was superbly crisp on the outside and chewy inside. Individually, each element was excellent, and the contrast between the charred bacon, succulent chicken and juicy tomatoes was terrific. You won’t regret ordering it. If you think that sounds impressive, I opted for the homemade mac ‘n’ cheese (£5.50), served with garlic bread and a bowl of salad. Here, the ingredients produced a wonderfully moreish harmony – perfect comfort food. We also shared a side of sweet potato fries (£2.50), which were simple, fresh and lovely. If you’re looking for a tranquil atmosphere to complement dessert, Sunnybank’s rural surroundings certainly fit the bill. And if there is anyone who can draw customers to such an off-the-beaten-track location, it’s owner Rebecca Storey. “Don’t forget to stop for a well-deserved treat from the Yorkshire Ice Cream Farm,” she insists, as she clears our table. A mouth-watering menu of freshly-made milkshakes, ice cream cones and tubs and sorbets (£2-4) awaits, in flavours ranging from classic chocolate to pistachio. Choose
from over 40, all made using only the finest local ingredients and available to eat-in or take-away. Hannah long-spooned a prosecco and mandarin sorbet with great glee, and I enthused over my selection of ice creams, which ranged from salted caramel and cherry cheesecake to rocky road and Ferrero Rocher. It was a very generous portion, and every flavour was magnificent; I scraped up almost every drop. Sunnybank Gardens is a great place to meet friends for an informal lunch – and surrounded as it is by beautiful countryside, there’s plenty of scope for a bracing walk beforehand. A head for happiness HOW A TREATMENT FOR HAIR LOSS HELPED DAVID TAYLOR REBUILD HIS CONFIDENCE AND SET HIM ON THE ROAD TO A NEW CAREER. hey say that beauty is only skin deep, but for David Taylor – and many other people - a small change on the outside can make a huge difference on the inside. David from Owston Ferry hadn’t realised the impact hair loss had had on his confidence until he found a way to get it back. Though initially sceptical, David decided to try a non-surgical treatment called Scalp Micro Pigmentation (SMP). His transformation was so dramatic that he was inspired to become a SMP technician and help other men rebuild their confidence too. With the increasing social pressures placed on men to look good and male mental health becoming a hot topic in the media in recent years, he recognises how baldness can knock his clients’ self-esteem, and contribute to

issues such as anxiety and depression. But it’s usually a number of circumstances that take their toll on our self-esteem, and no one knows this better than David, who has overcome his fair share of setbacks. “I have always been a confident person, especially after overcoming some strong challenges,” he confirms. “I had a near-death car crash when I was 20 years old. The accident occurred on a road near Matlock and the good people of Chesterfield Royal Hospital put me together again, but I was told I would no longer be able to lead an active lifestyle or have use of my left eye.” David had sustained a long list of injuries, from broken bones, including his kneecap, femur, cheekbone and nose, to significant muscle damage, including a crushed eye socket and destroyed lower orbital muscle, on
FEATURE
which his left eye sat. Along with a torn lip, a chunk out of his forearm and many other minor lacerations to his body, David had to undergo three hours of stitch work by a plastic surgeon, and ten hours of bone work, as well as a procedure to fit a synthetic orbital muscle below his eye. But David wasn’t about to give up. “From the point of it occurring to being fully operational again, involved about two years of physio, mobility and pain control. I rebuilt my body enough to do a triathlon near the anniversary of the crash to mark the point of moving on. Ironically, my eyesight improved once I was fully healed.” David had always wanted to join The Royal Navy, and after two long years of rehabilitation, he started an application in 2006. He had done well on the fitness and recruitment test, but was turned down due to the injuries he had sustained. Undeterred, he appealed the decision, built up a portfolio of multiple independent medical reviews and made a phone call to the career office every Monday for a year, before finally being accepted as an elite Royal Navy Mine Clearance Divers and starting his training in October 2007. When he was in the navy and his hair started to thin, David would shave his hair off regularly and didn't think much more of it, but when his hairline began to break up and patches started to appear, he began to feel unhappy with his appearance. “I felt I had lost the framing of my face and it played on my mind quite a lot, but I figured, that's just genetics – there’s nothing I can do about it. I had no interest in surgical solutions, either, as I had seen a fair amount of hospitals in my life and wasn’t sure about the consistency of the outcome. David’s wife Jody owns a skin specialist clinic, and sees many new products and treatments come in to the industry. “Knowing of my distaste for losing my hair, she pointed the treatment out to me. After she showed me that Scalp Micro Pigmentation (SMP) was a non-surgical treatment and how immediate the results were, I went for it.
‘With the burden of nagging doubt lifted, I genuinely became a happier, more positive person, almost overnight.’
David and Jody Taylor
“It wasn’t until after the treatment, that I realised how self-conscious I had been about my hair (or lack of) and how much confidence I had lost because of it. With the burden of that nagging doubt lifted, I genuinely became a happier, more positive person, almost overnight.” Scalp Micro Pigmentation (SMP) is a revolutionary hair loss cure procedure, where organic pigment is placed in the dermal layer of the skin to replicate a hair follicle, and is arranged in such a way that it looks as though the client has shortly cut hair. In other words, it involves tattooing thousands of
small dots on the scalp to achieve the realistic appearance of hair. It was early last year that David had the Scalp Micro Pigmentation (SMP) treatment. By this point, he had served in The Royal Navy for eight years, and the birth of his son had made him rethink his occupation. “I was so impressed with the treatment and surprised by how much of a positive effect it had on me, I booked a course to learn the trade the same week.” David is now a SMP technician and runs his business, SkinDeepScalp, within his wife’s clinic, SkinDeep, in Epworth. Not only has it had a significant effect on his mental wellbeing, but discovering the treatment, which has led him to set up the business, has brought him closer to his family too. “My plans for the future are to enjoy family life and continue to grow SkinDeepScalp, as I feel it's both a good business model and also a very positive and beneficial treatment that can add a lot of value to people's lives. “Male depression has been highlighted as a serious problem and I work within an industry that directly assists in rebuilding confidence and self-worth.”

Save our soles: SOS for feet LOOK FABULOUS AND FEEL COMFORTABLE WITH THE AID OF DERMAL FILLERS AT ELEMENTS MEDISPA. ver since women discovered high heels hundreds of years ago, they have made the difficult decision to favour fashion over comfort, but now there is a new treatment where you can finally have both. Elements MediSpa in Doncaster is one of the advanced medical clinics leading the way with a revolutionary procedure to cushion women’s feet. Though more commonly used in the face, dermal fillers can be used to provide cushioning for the balls of the feet. Elements is home to one of the leading podiatric surgeons in the UK, Mr Tony Wilkinson, who has more than 25 years’ experience treating foot and ankle problems both surgically and non-surgically. He is employed by Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching hospital NHS Trust as a consultant and is a member of the diabetic foot protection team. He undertakes elective and reconstructive foot surgery in both the NHS and private practice. Tony brings a wealth of experience to Elements, where he will be offering the latest advances in dermal foot fillers, allowing for more comfort when wearing high heels or alleviating pressure points caused by corns and hard skin. Dermal fillers are mainly comprised of a naturally occurring sugar in the body, called Hyaluronic Acid (HA). HA has many functions, but one of which is to ‘plump’ an area of the body. Water helps the HA to perform its plumping
E
action, and once introduced into the body, it rapidly attracts the spare water to plump up the area. The treatment itself is painless, as a local anaesthetic is given beforehand. As this is a cosmetic procedure for the foot, you will only find this treatment carried out by a specialist, such as Tony. Once injected into the balls of the feet, the dermal fillers will last approximately six to twelve months. The procedure itself takes between one and oneand-a-half hours. There are minimal possible side effects with the procedure, such as post-operative discomfort and infection, although the latter is extremely rare. People who have had the treatment say they feel like they are “walking on pillows”, and that “there is no pain when wearing heeled shoes.” From special occasions such as weddings and race days, to occupations where you are on your feet day in and day out, those who wear heels or have lost padding on the balls of their feet will benefit greatly from this procedure. What’s more, dermal fillers for feet may be used for anyone who suffers with the symptoms of wearing high heeled shoes.
If you’d like to find out more about how dermal fillers for feet could save your soles from discomfort, contact Elements MediSpa on 01302 34 34 32.

Put a smile on your face WHETHER YOU WANT TO SMOOTH OUT SOME LINES AND WRINKLES OR GIVE YOUR EYEBROWS A NEW LOOK, FACE FACTS MEDISPA ARE EXPERTS IN THEIR FIELD. RACHEL MARTIN WITNESSED SALES EXECUTIVE REBECCA HUME’S TRANSFORMATION.
I
f you want to face the summer sun with confidence, line and wrinkle treatments may be the best way to
do so. Used to soften and smooth expression lines by relaxing the muscles through a small series of painless injections of premier botulinum toxin, it is an effective way of addressing the signs of ageing without going under the knife. Results for many are visible and often last up to three to four months. A registered nurse for over 35 years, Gaynor Waddington established Face Facts MediSpa clinic in 2003. As an advanced trained practitioner and independent nurse prescriber, Gaynor meets the “gold standard requirements” for delivering these treatments. Gaynor can help you achieve fabulous results, and has received a wealth of five-star reviews. The Face Facts MediSpa team provide a personal touch and unrivalled follow-up service, meaning patients return again and again, and recommend services to friends. Gaynor also has a dedicated celebrity client base, and was recently head-hunted by Real Housewives of Cheshire star Dawn Ward, to work in her clinic. Eastside sales executive Rebecca Hume knows first-hand how fantastic the Face Facts experience is, and this month she returned to Gaynor to smooth out the lines and wrinkles in three key areas of her face – mid brow, forehead and around the eyes. Before there was any sight of a needle, however, Gaynor had some important questions to ask. “The consultation was very thorough and the treatments that followed were performed quickly and professionally, with very little pain or discomfort,” says Rebecca. “I felt immediately relaxed, as we took the time to discuss expectations and looked at the areas of my face that I was unhappy with. Gaynor explained the various ways in which the treatment would work best for me and I knew I was in very capable hands. “We discussed my concerns and throughout the treatments Gaynor explained why she chose the areas she did; the results absolutely exceeded my expectations.” After a thorough face-to face assessment and a medical history check, patients can consider the options available and arrange, if they wish, an appointment. As an independent nurse prescriber, Gaynor is able to assess, prescribe and administer advanced facial treatments including dermal 60 Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk
fillers for her speciality lip enhancement and the latest eight-point liquid face lift herself. This ensures a seamless service, with safety being paramount. A review is offered two to four weeks later, which ensures patients are happy and results are as natural looking as possible. “Post-divorce, I wanted to feel better about myself, and on the back of general ageing concerns, more confident about the way I
look,” Rebecca continues. “I felt better in almost an instant. Antiwrinkle injections have a major impact on your appearance, and for me, there was no downtime. “People can actually see the difference. I cannot believe the amount of comments I’ve had from friends, family and work colleagues. I want to thank Gaynor for putting the biggest smile back on my face.”

Holly Cave t this time of year, semi-permanent makeup is a must when you are looking forward to your hard-earned summer holiday. Salon manager and senior therapist Holly Cave has specialised in many aspects of the beauty industry for 14 years. She has worked alongside Nouveau Beauty Group, and specialises in semi-permanent eyebrows, lip liner, full lip colour and eye-liner, and Nouveau Lashes. Holly takes time to explain the eyebrow procedure, is meticulous in her measurement and skilled at drawing on the brows she suggests are the best shape for you. “Semi-permanent eyebrows are a two-part process,” says Holly. “First I pencil in the eyebrow shape to suit the clients’ face – which we agree on together – before matching a complementary colour. “Delicate hair strokes are then applied with a fine needle, and once the treatment is finished, I ensure the client is happy with the results. A retouch appointment is then booked four to six weeks later.” Clients frequently remark on Holly’s creativity and artistic talents, including

Eastside sales executive Rebecca Hume, who wanted to do something about the shape and thickness of her eyebrows. “Holly spent ages studying my face, designing what she considered to be the ‘perfect brow shape’; using a white pencil to blank out the hairs she wanted to remove and a darker one to draw in the ones she would add permanently. “Seeing the brow shape I’d end up with before giving the go-ahead was reassuring. The treatment took approximately 45 minutes and though I was slightly nervous, Holly’s wealth of experience put me at ease. I was also shocked that there was no discomfort. “When Holly passed me the mirror, the difference was unreal. I wanted to jump off the bed and hug her. As I’ve aged, my eyebrows have become almost non-existent, and I hated having to pencil them in all the time. “The morning after I looked in the mirror for the first time in years, and a touch of mascara later, I set off for work with the biggest smile on my face. The impact this treatment has had on my confidence, my mood and my appearance is priceless.” Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk 61

Get the camping gear out and try a night under canvas
Beat the boredom STAYCATION TIPS – FUN THINGS TO DO WITHOUT TRAVELLING FAR FROM HOME. BY RACHEL MARTIN. o you want to have fun this summer, but you're not exactly swimming in money. Or maybe you've already blown your budget on a big trip and are looking for frugal things to do with the rest of your summer break. Try our list of inexpensive (or free) things to do when you're vacationing at home, guaranteed to cure your boredom.
S
Go for a bike ride There are thousands of miles of dedicated bike trails, including the Trans Pennine Trail, Southern Greenway to Rossington, the Northern Greenway to Adwick, the Woodfield Greenway to Balby-Edlington, White Rose Way, York Road, Wheatley Hall Road, Thorne Road and Armthorpe Road.
Go for a hike Walking is the best exercise, so pick a park or 62 Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk
scenic area, plan a hike and explore. And don’t forget a picnic lunch and water; you don't have to spend tons of dough buying food, just grab some snacks from the pantry, an old blanket and enjoy getting back to nature.
Read a book You don’t have to be in a faraway place to settle down with a good summer read. Head to a local coffee house, splurge on a cappuccino and spend a few hours getting lost in a book.
Forage for food Even if you don't have a garden, there may be free food within your reach. Look online for foraging maps or ask friends if they know of any places to grab free fruit, berries, nuts, herbs and more (legally, of course). And then search for a recipe to experiment with your freefound food.
Camp Have some camping supplies in a closet that barely get any use? You don't have to trek to a far-off wilderness location to have fun. Use your own backyard to pitch a tent, drag out a mattress and cook s'mores. No judging if you sneak back into the house to sleep the rest of the night.
Geocache Yes, it's still a thing. The old-school way to geocache involved a GPS unit, but now there are apps that make it easy to get started - you can sign up for a geocache account and go for a hunt. Not only is it free, you might even get something out of it if you find a particularly good treasure cache.
Reorganise This is probably not fun for everyone, but if you're one of the folks who absolutely loves making your home look fresh and new on the regular, spend a day wildly rearranging not just furniture and accessories, but whole rooms and art on the walls.

SIMPLE TIPS FOR A SMOOTH TRIP Travel is full of major decisions - like which country to visit and how much to spend. But beyond the big picture, it’s the little things that can make a trip easier and less stressful. Follow our simple tips to smooth the way on your next vacation. Pack essentials in your carry-on
Recent stats indicate that, on average, at least one bag on every flight is lost or delayed. If there’s anything you can’t live without, pack it in your carry-on. And you’ll get through airport security faster if you pack efficiently. Mark your bags with an easily recognizable item
The days of flower-pattern steamer trunks are long gone; now we all buy our bags at the same stores from the same manufacturers. The result: an endless stream of nearly identical bags on the baggage carousel. The solution: mark your bag by tying a colourful ribbon, stitching a patch or utilising a sticker. Remember your flight number
This may seem like a no-brainer, but knowing your flight number can make your life easier in small or foreign airports that do not list the full names of destination airports, or list by flight number alone. Save your boarding pass
Do you usually toss your boarding pass as soon as you step off the plane? You might want to reconsider. Your boarding pass can serve as proof of travel and can also be useful as a receipt for tax purposes, particularly if you’re selfemployed. Take old currency with you
At-home spa day If you don't have the dough to splurge on a day at a real spa, spend a little time transforming your bathroom into an at-home one you can pamper yourself in.
Learn how to make something from scratch Try learning how to make something from scratch - especially something you use a lot. It might require splurging a bit of money on supplies to start, but you'll soon save by making items instead of buying them.
Spend time with family People remember the good times spent with each other more than the places they’ve been. Get out a deck of cards or a board game and spend time talking, laughing and reminiscing.
Exercise Try Yoga, Pilates, boxercise, cross training etc. After all, summer offers warmer weather, more daylight and a greater chance that you can book time with a workout buddy.
Hit the snooze button Hey, vacations are to escape from daily life and relax. Catch up on some sleep.
Exchanging foreign currency after you’ve returned home is a hassle, so if you have any stray foreign currency laying around, take it with you the next time you cross international borders. Then, when you’re in need of local currency, you can exchange money from any other country. Know your hotel information
If a) your baggage is lost or delayed, b) you miss your connection and will be late checking in, or c) you are going to a destination you’ve never visited before, you’ll want to have complete contact information for your hotel on your person. Before you leave home, print out the hotel’s name, address and phone number, and program the latter into your phone. It’s also a good idea to print out a map of the hotel’s neighbourhood, whether for your own use or to show to a confused cab driver. Book travel insurance
While none of us want to think about things that could go wrong in the time between booking and jetting off - for example illness, bereavement or redundancy - taking out a policy could potentially save you thousands and offer you peace of mind. Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk 63

A tranquil haven THE EIGHT-ACRE SHOW GARDENS AT WALKER’S NURSERIES ARE CONSTANTLY EVOLVING UNDER THE CARE OF DAVID WALKER AND GRAHAM BODLE. he show gardens at Walkers Nurseries, in Blaxton, near Doncaster, are an extension of the original stock garden which was planted by Lawrence Walker and are now over 40 years old. Developed by Graham Bodle, the new Show Gardens opened in 2008, covering eight acres of rural countryside, with views of the Water Garden, the Woodland Trail, the Gatehouse and the Stone Circle. Since its opening, Graham has continued to maintain and refresh the garden, introducing elements of his award-winning Chelsea Flower Show designs too. The most recent introduction to the gardens is elements of the Walker’s Wharf garden. The garden secured Graham a Gold Medal award and Best Artisan at RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2017. Inspired by a project at the side of the river Trent, Graham aimed to create a usable outdoor area from a derelict industrial space. He achieved this through intricate sculptural work, using recycled materials, combined with strategic, understated planting. A colour palette of all shades green, was thoughtfully selected to fully engage the viewer and create a sense of tranquility. The key feature in the garden is the disused industrial wharf, detailed with a lichencovered skull and softened by contrasting pines and conifers. A dyke lies below, with a drawbridge inviting you to view more of what our show gardens have to offer. The Sculptors Picnic garden has also been
T
recreated within the gardens. This garden won the Gold Medal award for Best Artisan at RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2015. The garden was designed around the sculptural oak branches which are reminiscent of a stag’s antlers. The branches create a semienclosed space and frame the garden perfectly, creating a tranquil atmosphere. Designed to be situated at the edge of a woodland area, the colour scheme is predominately green with hints of brown showing through with the branches and seating. Heritage is a strong theme throughout Graham’s work. Established by his grandparents in 1951, Walkers Nurseries continues to specialise in pines and conifers. Graham used a woodland planting scheme to incorporate some heritage into the garden and continued the theme including tree stumps to create a rustic, natural seating area. The show gardens are constantly changing, taking on a new appearance with each season. Walkrs have also recently opened the restored 1951 HY Citroen van located at the entrance to the show gardens. They serve homemade tray bakes, sausage rolls, ice lollies, cold drinks and barista-made coffee. OUR ROUND-UP OF ALL THE EXCITING THINGS HAPPENING IN THE REGION.
Another successful Visit Bawtry Annual Charity Polo Cup After a sabbatical last year, the Visit Bawtry Charity Polo Cup Family Day was back, bigger and more popular than ever. It was a gloriously sunny day with much fun had by both visitors and players alike. The event attracted around 300 supporters, who set up picnics and cheered on the teams from the sidelines. Organised by the Bawtry Retail Association, the event, which has raised thousands of pounds for local charities, was held at the Robin Hood Polo Club at Misson, with a percentage of all tickets sales going towards local charities. This year’s causes included local boy Charlie Szpakowicz-Cook, who has been diagnosed with quadriplegic cerebral palsy, and The Bawtry & Doncaster branch of the British Heart Foundation. Charlie was in attendance with his parents Natalie and Simon and his brothers, who rolled the ball for the start of the game. The family are now raising funds to purchase a state-of-the-art Neater Eater and an adapted disabled bike, which will assist Charlie with his everyday life. The Bawtry & Doncaster branch of the 76 Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk
British Heart Foundation also attended the event and were celebrating their 30th anniversary. Donations and a raffle helped raise funds for the charity. This year’s event had a slightly different format to previous years, as they welcomed visiting clubs including Yorkshire Polo Club teams, King William and White Rose, Stag Polo Club from St Albans, and the home team, Visit Bawtry. Congratulations go to White Rose who won the first game against the Visit Bawtry team, which was sponsored by Ziniz Restaurant & Wine Bar, and to Stag Polo Club who beat King William in the second game, sponsored by Hummingbird Helicopters. Though the local teams were beaten, spirits were not dampened. VIP guests enjoyed the hospitality of King William at Scaftworth, with fizz on arrival, a seating and dining area, table service for drinks and a BBQ, which was particularly popular. Match sponsor Hummingbird Helicopters flew their guests to the event, which made a great visual spectacle, and everyone enjoyed taking a closer look at their brand new fourseater helicopter.
There were many smartly dressed ladies in attendance celebrating occasions such as a hen do, while families brought wonderful picnics and enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere of the afternoon and the Best Dressed Picnic Table went to Jane Beaumont, who won a bag full of goodies including champagne, wine, a polo lesson, vouchers and a helicopter ride, chosen by Bawtry Retail Association chair, Ross Jarvie. He said: “We would like to thank all of our fantastic sponsors, Robin Hood Polo Club, and everyone else who turned out to help make this event such a great success. Thanks to Solutions for Cleaning, once again, for their professional service and helping to keep everywhere litter free. “Polo is a great spectator sport, and the atmosphere and camaraderie at our annual polo day meant that everyone had a great time – especially with the wonderful weather. “It was great to see so many families enjoying the polo – one of the oldest ball games in the world – and we look forward to another fantastic event next year.” To find out more about Bawtry Retail Association and their upcoming events, visit www.visitbawtry.com

IN BRIEF
Local dance school wins national award
Doncaster’s Mayor launches new Dream Doors showroom Dream Doors, the UK’s largest kitchen makeover company, has just opened a brand-new showroom in Doncaster. Owner, Jerry Innesbeer, celebrated the grand opening with the help of his friends, family, fellow local business owners and several new customers. On hand to cut the ribbon was the mayor of Doncaster, Councillor Majid Khan, as well as Dream Doors’ managing director, Philip Carr. Dream Doors is a national brand with more than 80 locally-owned showrooms. The company prides itself on providing quality kitchens through an award-winning service, with a focus on its innovative ‘kitchen facelift’. By simply replacing the kitchen’s doors and worktops, Dream Doors can create what looks like a brand new kitchen for a fraction of the price, hassle and time of a complete refit. Jerry joined the Dream Doors network as he was keen to run a local business that was supported by an extremely successful and trusted national brand. He was struck by the highend products that Dream Doors manages to supply and install at affordable prices. “Dream Doors is the smart and cost-effective choice of achieving a new look for your kitchen,” he said. “I thoroughly enjoy helping customers spend their money more wisely by replacing parts of the kitchen you see, rather that components that are out of view and probably did not require replacing in the first place.” Based on almost 20,000 reviews and 65,000 installations, the company has an average score of 9.7/10 on the independent consumer monitoring website, Checkatrade. What’s more, Dream Doors has won several national awards, including 2017’s Home and Living Awards for “Best Money Saving Product” and “Best Kitchen Supplier.” The Dream Doors showroom is located at Unit 4, Mill Street Shopping Centre, Armthorpe, Doncaster, DN3 3DL. SV Dance Studios in Conisborough have won national competition, Teen Star. The dance school specialises in street dancing and musical theatre and team DN12, made up of 15 girls aged ten to 17, wowed the judges throughout. DN12 entered The X Factor-style competition after accepting an audition in Leeds. They were put through to the next round, where they performed in front of a live audience and three judges at a theatre in Dewsbury, then went through to the semifinals in London, where they performed in front of a live audience and three influential people in the entertainment industry. The dance team were up against some amazing talent from all over the country and the standard was incredibly high, but at the end of the show in London, DN12 were announced as the Teen Star 2018 winners. No strangers to success, the team also won a Camp Dance award earlier this year, after performing at Disneyland Paris. Congratulations to all the dancers at SV Dance Studios, as well as to dance teachers, Emma Randerson and Kerry Robinson, who have all worked so hard to get to where they are today. TEAMS COMPETE IN DONCASTER DRAGON BOAT CHALLENGE 2018 The annual Doncaster Dragon event, organised by Visit Doncaster and the Rotary Club of Doncaster St George’s, took place on Doncaster Lakeside. Twenty-three teams competed in brightly coloured authentic Chinese Dragonboats with crews made up of ten paddlers and a drummer, who navigated a 250m course. The winners were Denton & Nickels, finishing narrowly ahead of Pennine Stone’s Paddlers, with Rampton (Hospital) Raiders (on behalf of the Eve Merton Dreams Trust) finishing third. Denton & Nickels have now won the event three times in the last five years. The Go Green Ltd Usain Boat Ladies Team were crowned Queens of the Lake in the Ladies Final, with DB4C (Doncaster Business for the Community) finishing runners up. The racing is used by many as a company team building event, with the competing teams choosing their favourite registered charities for the bulk of their sponsorship donations. many other worthy causes. The day is estimated to have raised around £10,000 for these causes, which will bring the total raised to well over £100,000 since the event started nine years ago. Plans are already in place for next year’s event – which will be the 10th anniversary – to be held on Saturday 13 July 2019. Richard Young from Visit Doncaster Business Development, said: “It was great. I always
enjoy this day. There’s a brilliant atmosphere, great team spirit and it’s all for charity. I’m looking forward to our tenth year event.” John Day from the Rotary Club of Doncaster added: “The enthusiasm and motivation of the teams and individuals in raising money for worthy causes, whilst having a great time in doing it, just seems to increase every year. Our thanks go to them and the people of Doncaster for their unwavering support.”
