Perfect gifts for anglers n a world dominated by technology, it came as a welcome surprise to learn that sales of junior fishing licenses in England and Wales have increased by 25 per cent since 2016. No one was happier to hear this than Andrew (Rew) and Sophia Landells, owners of fishing tackle shop, Rod & Reel. Rod & Reel has enjoyed a long history in Bawtry, and for the last 31 years, it was known as R&R Sports. Then in November 2016, Rew and Sophia Landells took over the shop and rebranded it, giving it a new lease of life. Having previously worked in the shop in his youth, before moving on to working as a sales representative for angling firm, Waterline, Rew then joined the fire service at Doncaster Sheffield Airport. But his interest in fishing never waned as he continued to fish for the Daiwa Don’s team. Then in 2016, after hearing that the shop was on the market and knowing how passionate he was about the trade, Sophia suggested they purchase it. Their aim was to build on the previous owners’ success and to carry the business into the future, modernising it for a younger market, whilst still serving those customers who had helped put it on the map. “We are and always have been a traditional, family-run tackle shop with a long-

standing reputation for excellent bait,” says Sophia. “Since taking over, we have sought to transform the old favourite into a new modern one-stop shop for anglers. “We are lucky to have not only taken over a great shop with a long-serving and loyal customer base, but also a team of staff who have over 20 years working within the tackle trade between them. We pride ourselves on having excellent local knowledge and experience, and above all, we love fishing!” Rew and Sophia hope to welcome lots of new anglers to the shop and are committed to attracting young people to the sport, providing a safe and constructive pastime. Whilst the Environment Agency and Angling Trust are doing their bit by offering free rod licenses to anglers aged between 12 and 16, they want to help by challenging people’s perceptions of the sport. They offer free WiFi, have one of the youngest sales teams in the industry and are building a social media presence to make themselves more accessible and relatable to young people.
They have already run a successful Facebook competition designed to celebrate youth involvement in fishing. They have also streamlined their product range, doing away with old sports equipment, to focus on what they know best – fishing tackle. “Having said that,” continues Sophia, “we appreciate that not everyone knows their pellet wagglers from their plummets, which makes buying gifts for loved ones a challenge. So we now offer a range of Stanley Flasks, Victorinox penknives and Bridgedale socks – perfect accessories for the angler or outdoors lover we all know. As is tradition, the unveiling of the Womack’s Christmas window took place on 26 November, revealing yet another visual masterpiece. Womack’s definitely know how to decorate for Christmas and I’m certain their window rivals displays in any major city, including London. China Rose are also sponsoring the fantastic 20ft Christmas tree in Market Place again this year, and will be inviting everyone to buy a wooden heart decoration for just £2, write a message on it to a loved one and hang in on the remembrance tree in their car park. All proceeds will be split between the Parents’ Association of Children with Tumours and Leukaemia at Sheffield Children’s Hospital and the British Heart Foundation. FESTIVAL OF ANCESTORS For the third year running, China Rose Bawtry opened its doors to local pensioners to celebrate Chongyang, the Chinese Festival of the ancestors. One-hundred-and-seventy Bawtry pensioners were treated to a three-course Chinese meal with live music by a 1940s style swing band Swingamathing – all completely free of charge. “Chongyang is a very important festival in our calendar and we thought that this was a fantastic way to celebrate and respect our elders in the town where we have had our restaurant for over 30 years,” said restaurant manager Carly Hui. Family is held in very high esteem in Chinese culture with the young and elderly receiving extra special attention.”

Lighting up the night To commemorate the 400th anniversary of the Maylfower Pilgrims setting sail for America, Bawtry held an illuminating ceremony that captured the imagination. By Hannah Sanders. his November, Bawtry High Street transformed into a magical, otherworldly place with a spectacular parade of lanterns, music and entertainment. The commemorative event, Illuminate, was part of a countdown to the 400th anniversary of the Mayflower and recognised Doncaster’s important connections to the story of the Mayflower Pilgrims, some of whom came from the area before they sailed to America in 1620. According to Sue Allan, official historian at Scrooby Manor, chair of the Pilgrim Fathers UK origins association, historian at the Austerfield Field Project and owner of the Mayflower Pilgrim Tours, one of the most important figures among the Mayflower Pilgrims was William Bradford of Austerfield, who served as Governor to the

reflect a famous quote from Bradford’s writings. “Thus out of small beginnings greater things have been produced by His hand that made all things of nothing, and gives being to all things that are; and, as one small candle may light a thousand, so the light here kindled hath shone unto many.” These words sum up the Separatists’ brave stance in defying the state in order to gain simple autonomous human rights. Preparations for the event were in full swing for many weeks, with local artists sharing their lantern-making skills with schools and community groups. The lanterns were made from willow and paper, lit with LEDs. Organisations that have been involved with the planning and staging of the illuminate event Rt Reverend Paul Williams at St Helena’s Church include Doncaster Council, Visit
Plymouth Colony. It’s thanks to Bradford’s journal that we know so much about the struggle of the Separatists Mayflower Pilgrims and their fight for the religious freedom. Sue explains that the word ‘illuminate’ was chosen for the commemorative events to
www.visitbawtry.com Doncaster, Bawtry Phoenix Theatre, Pilgrim Fathers Origin Association, Bawtry Town Council, Bawtry Library and the Crown Hotel. A number of local schools also created wonderful structures featured in the parade including Bawtry Mayflower, St Oswald’s, Misson and Everton. The event started with a candle lighting service at St Helena’s Church led by Rt Reverend Paul Williams, Bishop of Southwell and Nottingham followed by the magical lantern parade through Bawtry High Street which ended at St Nicholas Parish Church. To continue the commemorations the Phoenix Theatre and Quirky Choir provided fantastic entertainment. As part of the countdown to the anniversary, Illuminate events happened nationally during the third week of November, coinciding with Thanksgiving in America. Following Doncaster’s Illuminate, there was also parades in Retford, Gainsborough, Boston, Grimsby and Immingham. In 2020 the UK, USA and Holland will commemorate and celebrate the 400th anniversary of the sailing of the Mayflower, aptly named Mayflower 400.

CHINA ROSE SHOW SOME HEART China Rose, on South Parade, Bawtry is once again inviting everyone to buy a wooden heart tree decoration this Christmas to raise money for two charities. For just £2, write a message on a heart to a loved one and hang it on China Rose’s Always in My Heart tree in their car park. All proceeds will be split between PACT (Parents’ Association of Children with Tumours and Leukaemia) at Sheffield Children’s Hospital and the British Heart Foundation. There are around 38,780 people living in Doncaster with heart and circulatory disease and the money raised from heart decoration sales will help fund ground-breaking research to find new ways to prevent, diagnose and treat these devastating conditions. The Bawtry/Doncaster branch of the BHF won the 2016 national Fundraising Volunteer of the Year award from the British Heart Foundation (BHF) and have raised over £658,000 since the branch began 29 years ago. The charity is also preparing for its annual Chase the Pud event, which will take place at Doncaster Lakeside on Sunday 3 December. This is the seventh year that this popular Doncaster restaurant has supported these two charities. Hearts are available to purchase from the reception of China Rose. Linda, Retford Dear Linda Here are a few cunning little tricks to help minimise the after effects. 1. Try to eat breakfast on Christmas Day. If you are full youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re less likely to fill up on snacks and chocs. 2. Avoid feeling uncomfortably full by eating slowly. Keep portions smaller, the key to successful eating is controlling portion size. 3. Be aware of how you cook things. For example, cut roasting potatoes into larger chunks and they absorb less fat. 4. Alternate alcoholic drinks with a glass of water; moderation is the trick. 5. Shopping is brilliant over Christmas, charging round the sales burning all those excess calories. Up your pace and burn 200 calories in half an hour. 6. Try to get back to normality as soon as possible, after parties etc. Send the leftovers home with friends, donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t keep them in the fridge for the day after.

Seven bottles of fizz were tasted, ranging between £5.79 and £26.99, and our tasters were asked not only to score their fizz out of ten, but to also identify taste notes and what they were drinking. To conceal any clues, each bottle arrived at The Crown Hotel wrapped in foil, identified only by a number, so our tasters were truly in the dark about the bubbles they were sipping. The evening began with a 2008 Les Pionniers Vintage Champagne £25.99 from Co-op and for The Crown’s Katey Dent, the sheer quality of this champagne was evident from the very first sip: “It’s not too dry or sweet, but has a smooth aftertaste that will please most palates. I’d hold my glass out for a second refill – or more. It makes you feel like celebrating the season.”

The champers also scored high with Eastside’s Rebecca Hume, thanks to its: “creamy texture and a sharp finish.” A fizz tasting veteran, she proclaimed the bottle: “a decent bet for a Christmas tipple.” Up next was the first prosecco of the evening, a £5.95 prosecco Spumante DOP 2016 Vintage from Lidl, and for Sunnybank Gardens’ Rebecca Storey, this was not to her usual taste: “It’s a tad too fizzy and the bubbles dissolve too quickly on the tongue. It lacks a real core of flavour and the overall impression is one of a ¯

simple, if attractive fizz.” The majority of tasters thought the next bottle – a £7.99 Exquisite collection Crémant du Jura from Aldi, was a bit on the bland side, but because it's “light and easy to drink”, friend of Eastside Emma Middleton said it would be her first choice to: “mix with orange juice for a cheeky Bucks Fizz on Christmas morning.” It was all about the bubbles with bottle number four, the second Champagne of the evening and the most expensive fizz sampled – a £26.99 Augusta Brut NV Champagne from Majestic Wine. Which for Jones and Co’s Louise Richardson delivered: “A fragrant and warming scent.” And it had lots of bubbles to “add to the party feeling.” But her co-worker Andrew Bevan was left underwhelmed by this fizz, saying that: “Although very bubbly it smells like pot pourri that has been sitting out for a really long time.” Up next was the second prosecco of the evening, a £7.99 Superiore DOCG from Aldi, which scored a disappointing 31 out of a possible 90 points. Ski Olympic’s Jarrod Osbourne was first to cast his judgement: “It’s not particularly dry and leaves a slightly bitter aftertaste. Tastes rather like a tawdry prosecco. Pour it down the sink.” And Rebecca, who had concluded she would drink most of the samples tried so far, declared: “If ever prosecco was mis-named…” In contrast, our penultimate bottle, a £24.99 Leckford Estate Brut English sparkling wine from Waitrose, was a favourite of the night for Katey.“It’s gently floral and very English. A very good and easy-drinking wine,” she said.
And Jarrod was in agreement, regarding it the most expensive bottle of the evening: “This followed on from a run of rather oddtasting samples and brought some muchneeded relief. It showed a good depth of flavour and length.” With high standards to reach, closing the evening was Aldi’s Veuve Monsigny Champagne Brut (£10.99), which clinched last year’s top spot. But could it retain the acclaimed title this time around? The Champagne failed to live up to its predecessor and fell flat with our tasters, scoring a disappointing 35 out of a possible 90 points. With both Katey and her colleague Paula Wigglesworth commenting on the “strong aftertaste” that didn't sit well on their palates. On first sip, Andrew’s face was screwed up
in distaste as he declared it tricky to drink: “It's harsh at the back of the throat and the cidery-taste is overpowering. I couldn't drink a lot of it." Whilst Louise made a second comparison: “It's light, almost too light in fact. It tastes like cava to me. I wouldn’t drink this." As the final scores were calculated, it became clear that Co-op’s 2008 Les Pionniers Vintage Champagne had received the highest marks of the evening and that our tasters have discerning palates, as the vintage champagne walked away with the gold award at the inaugural Champagne & Sparking Wine World Championships 2017. At £25.99 the Co-op’s award-winning champers outtastes many a top grand marque - according to the supermarket’s experts. Taking the silver was Waitrose’s Leckford Estate Brut English Sparkling Wine. And in third, Majestic Wine’s Augusta Brut NV Champagne, the most expensive bottle of the evening. So there it is, our verdict on what you should be sipping this festive season. And with the majority commenting that our winner left them desiring another taste, why not indulge in a few more glasses? It is Christmas after all.

Dental practice switches pearly whites for charity work Green Square Dental Practice were all smiles when they put on a coffee morning to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support, followed the next day by a car wash service for Cavendish Cancer Care. For the Macmillan Coffee Morning, Duncan Park’s wife and co-owner of the practice, Lucy, made all the cakes, while staff from both the dental practice and Cavendish pitched in for the car wash. Altogether, they raised around £200 for each charity.

Help raise funds for a new pitch for Doncaster Hockey Club One of the most successful sports clubs in the borough has launched a new fundraising campaign to generate over £50,000 towards a new pitch. Doncaster Hockey Club, which was established in 1900 and has its home ground at the town’s Town Field location, requires over £200,000 to carry out the replacement of the pitch and other essential works to ensure the comfort and safety of its players and visiting guests from the 2018/19 season onwards. “Alongside membership funds and external funding grants, we still need to raise more money to cover the shortfall,” said Barbara Bellerby, president of Doncaster Hockey Club. “Asking for donations to ‘buy’ square metres of the new pitch will give players, friends, families and Doncaster businesses the opportunity to
make a contribution in securing the long term future of the club.” Renowned for its commitment to developing junior members and engaging with the community, the club enjoys regional and national success with several members of the junior teams representing South Yorkshire, the North of England and England at various age groups. James (15) on track for racing success James Taylor has secured a fully-funded racing season in the 2018 Ginetta Junior Championship. The 15-year-old from Wath-Upon-Dearne in Rotherham impressed across the board to beat 65 other drivers and claim one of the most soughtafter prizes in UK motorsport. The three-day event, which took place at Ginetta’s own circuit, Blyton Park, saw James earn himself use of a G40 race car and entry for the 2018 Ginetta Junior Championship, along with insurance, consumables, tyres and fuel, plus professional car preparation from an experienced team for the duration of the season. To make sure he is race ready by the time the 2018 season kicks off, James also receives a day of training at iZone worth £800, including media training with renowned television presenter Louise Goodman and driver training by top motorsport coaches on state-of-the-art simulators. James said: “I can’t believe it! I’ve been karting for seven years and always admired the Ginetta Junior Championship. “As a Yorkshire lad, I think I will fit in with the Ginetta family well. I can’t thank the staff, instructors and assessors enough for the help and advice they’ve given me to get me where I am today.” The Ginetta Junior Championship is the UK’s longest running and most prestigious junior series, making the calibre of entrants into this year’s scholarship some of the highest the competition has ever seen.
