I’ve been asked to write an editorial that sums up M Burrows Furniture World in 500 words. After typing out the generic ‘Quality Furniture, Huge Showroom ’ followed by ‘Free Delivery’ and let’s not forget the good old ‘Order selected stock now for Christmas delivery’, which although is all true, I think you’ll agree is fairly dull. Instead I’d like to make this a little more interesting and share with you the more personal stuff and what were actually about so here’s a few fun facts… We’re made up of two families, there can be some arguments but generally we love working here together. We are also prone to procrastinating a little on a Saturday morning with a gossip and a cuppa, we promise we do work hard most of the time. ROD & REEL TURNS TWO…AGAIN! Since 1985, Bawtry has been home to one of South Yorkshire’s favourite tackle and bait shops. In 2016, current owners Rew and Sophia took over the old favourite and re-launched it as Rod & Reel, a modern angling centre with a traditional heart. On 28 November they celebrated their second birthday at the helm of this long standing Bawtry business and tackling up for another big year. “My goal is to create a tackle shop for the modern angler. A PARTY TO DIE FOR If being greeted by a scary fire juggler and knocking back glasses of bubbly blood prosecco is your kind of thing, youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d have felt right at home at the recent Halloween Ball Event at Bawtry Hall. Organised in partnership with Exclusive Party, 150 guests were wowed by a devil statue, who scared guests during the drinks reception, and then a flash dance mob danced Michael Jackson before being seated for dinner. During desserts a magician visited the tables to perform tricks and a tarot card reader and disco ended the evening. Such was its success, a date has already been set for next year â&#x20AC;&#x201C; 26 October 2019.

SERVICE OF REMEMBRANCE On Remembrance Sunday, 2008 (Bawtry) Squadron Air Training Corps paraded to pay tribute to all those who laid down their lives in service for our country. They were humbled by the response from the local community, many of whom watched them march to St Nicholas Church, and packed the church with standing room only. The service, led by Rev Jonathan Strickland, remembered with sadness the fallen, but also celebrated the peace that followed, and the continued efforts over the years to maintain this around the world. The 'There but Not There' silhouettes, brought into the church by the Squadron, were a poignant reminder, not only of those who died, but also those who do not exist because of those deaths. Following the service, the squadron marched along Bawtry High Street to Bawtry Hall, the former home of No1 Group Bomber Command, where a Service of Commemoration and laying of wreaths was held at the RAF Bomber Command Memorial. The squadron would like thank the people of Bawtry, Austerfield and Tickhill who turned out to support the Parade and service.

here’s nothing quite like that first sip of fizz on Christmas morning. It’s one of the few days a year that it’s socially acceptable to pop open the bubbly at 8am, and the day wouldn’t really be the same without a mimosa or two while opening presents with our loved ones. While it might be a yearly tradition to treat ourselves to a tipple, who’s to say we have to break the bank by splashing out on the likes of Bollinger and Veuve Clicquot? Each year, supermarkets and specialist suppliers claim to be able to outshine expensive Champagnes with a bargain buy, so once again we brought together a panel of Eastside socialites at one of Bawtry’s best-loved destinations – The Crown Hotel, to put budget-friendly bottles to the test. Nine bottles of fizz were tasted, ranging in price from £4.99 to £27.99, and our six tasters were asked not only to score their fizz out of ten, but to also identify taste notes as well as guess what

type of fizz they were drinking. To conceal any clues, each bottle arrived at The Crown Hotel wrapped in foil, identified only by a number, so our tasters were truly in the dark about the bubbles they were sipping. We started off the evening with a 2011 Veuve Monsigny Vintage Champagne from Aldi, priced at £19.99. Though describing it as light, smooth and easy to drink, the majority of our panel mistook the champers for a bottle of Cava, and it’s slightly bitter aftertaste meant it struggled to stand up against many of the bottles to follow. Up next was the first prosecco of the evening, Co-op’s £8 Irresistible Prosecco. “I think that’s non-alcoholic”, declared Jones and Co’s Andrew Bevan, to which his fellow members of the panel nodded their heads in agreement, telling us that the prosecco was light, pale in colour and with no significant scent. We of course wouldn’t dare try to pull a fast one on these fizz fanatics, and we

were quick to reassure them that all bottles were in fact alcoholic. Bottle number three took us back to Champagne, with Nicolas Courtin Brut NV Champagne, £19.99 from Majestic. The majority of tasters identified the fizz correctly, noting that though their glasses weren’t particularly bubbly, the fizz did exhibit the tell-tale dryness and colour of Champagne. While nobody was jumping for joy at the taste of the Champagne, there were no particularly disappointed faces either, leaving this bottle sitting somewhere in the middle of the evening’s selection. The second vintage of the evening was one of the most expensive bottles of the night, a £25.99 bottle of Brut Special Réserve Vintage from Waitrose, and it really divided opinion amongst the panel. “It’s the nicest one so far, it’s got more of a kick to it” said The Crown Hotel’s Libby Smith, while The Shoe Room’s Richard Smith said “I’m not even going to finish this one”, as he gestured toward

his three empty glasses from the previous bottles. The buttery and rich flavours of the Champagne even led one of our harshest critics, The Crown’s Katey Dent, to describe the fizz as “the taste that keeps on giving”. From one of our most expensive to our least expensive bottle of the night. Aldi’s Contevedo Cava Brut Gold costs only £4.99, and judging by our panel’s responses, there could well be a reason for that. Our panel described the cava as watery and tasteless, and though there were plenty of bubbles to make it seem a fancy fizz, it was all bark and no bite. Following this was Lidl’s Comte de Senneval Champagne Brut £11.99, which despite its low price, was a high scorer with our panel. Libby hit the nail on the head by identifying the drink’s biscuity flavours, while the majority of the panel were in agreement that the bottle’s fruity notes and lively bubbles made it a real contender for the number one spot. Next up was the Les Pionniers NV Champagne £18.99 from Co-op, which was so bubbly that Richard described it as looking ‘like diamonds in a glass’. And while it looked inviting, it was slightly sharp and bitter in taste, and Katey felt that too many glasses of this particular fizz would leave you feeling worse for wear the following morning, to which Michelle and Louise agreed. The penultimate bottle, a £9.99 Lot Folletto D’Oro Prosecco DOCG from Aldi was quickly identified as prosecco by its light colour and just how easy it was to drink. It even managed to sway Katey, who is far from prosecco’s biggest fan. We rounded off the evening’s festivities with not only the most

expensive bottle of fizz, but the only rosé in the line-up. Majestic’s Oeil de Perdrix Rosé NV Champagne £27.99 went down a treat with our panel, who had nothing but good things to say about its stunning colour, fruity yet delicate taste and floral scent. Andrew declared it “the best one so far”, and even went back for a second glass. After sampling all nine bottles, it didn’t seem we really even needed to tally up the scores when it came to naming the best bottles of the evening. It was clear that our final fizz, Majestic’s Oeil de Perdrix Rosé NV Champagne was leaps and bounds above the rest, scoring 48 out of a possible 60 points and pleasing the whole Eastside panel. It seems a fitting win too, as with pink and blush decorations set to take over homes across the UK this Christmas, what better than a pink fizz to match? A close second was the Waitrose Brut Special Réserve Vintage, with 40 points, and not too far behind was Lidl’s Comte de Senneval Champagne Brut with 36 points. So there it is, our verdict on the bargain buys Eastsiders should be sipping on this Christmas.You don’t have to break the bank to enjoy a fabulous bottle of fizz, and for less than £30, these bottles give you an excuse to enjoy fresh, fruity fizz throughout the whole festive season, not just on the big day itself.
