Kelham Island Museum The museum began welcoming visitors in 1982, serving as a collection of items related to Sheffield’s industrial history. Today, it also provides a stunning setting for weddings and other special occasions, boasting historical charm and an abundance of photo opportunities with unforgettable backdrops. The distinctive Victorian building offers to-be-weds and their loved ones a one-of-a-kind facility in which to celebrate and make lots of precious memories. It includes original features and interactive galleries for guests to view and tales from those who worked throughout the Industrial Revolution. Couples can choose to hold their big day in one of several spaces available, including the Millowners Arms and the main body of the museum. They may also opt for the museum’s upper gallery, a customisable area with room for Image courtesy Fox Moon Photography a dance floor and a live band or DJ.

North Yorkshire Moors Railway It’s full steam ahead if you want a wedding setting unlike any other because you can tie the knot on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway. Ever since the first legal “I do” on Platform Two of Pickering Station back in July 2016, loved-up couples in search of a unique marriage ceremony have followed suit. The Grade II listed building is surrounded by gleaming steel, burnished teak and the leafy Yorkshire scenery. Demand has been steadily growing thanks to word of mouth from this unusual but captivating setting. After your vows, enjoy drinks on the terrace and pictures on the footplate, before being whisked away on a private steam train to Grosmont. Afternoon tea and refreshments will be served onboard, so help yourself to a finger sandwich or freshly baked fruit scone as the panoramic vistas whisk past outside.
The Crucible If you love a night at the theatre, get married on the Crucible Theatre stage under the beautiful twinkling ceiling or in the floor-to-ceiling windowed Adelphi Room that looks out over Sheffield’s Tudor Square, and host your wedding breakfast in the foyer or studio theatre. If you’re planning a big wedding, the theatre can hold up to 980 guests, all with an excellent view of your vows. You can even hold your ceremony on the set of one of their productions and when possible, take photos in the Lyceum auditorium, a stunning traditional and theatrical backdrop.
Chatsworth House Chatsworth is the perfect place to say “I do” with a spectacular wedding in the heart of the stunning Derbyshire countryside and Peak District. If you are looking for something extra special, then the Chatsworth House wedding is perfect for you. The spectacular Painted Hall is licensed to hold civil ceremonies and civil partnerships and Chatsworth couples will be able to tie the knot on the steps of the Great Stairs in this truly magnificent setting. Whatever the weather, whatever the season, Chatsworth provides the perfect backdrop for your day. From the acres of parkland across the estate to the beautifully maintained garden, you are bound to find your ideal spot for those all-important photos and memories that last a lifetime. Confetti Holmfirth Vineyard Yorkshire might not immediately spring to mind when you think of vineyards, but this seven-acre wine estate produces sensational bottles. Holmfirth Vineyard is truly versatile: you can marry indoors or outdoors, with our favourite choice being a magical twilight blessing among the vines. The photo opportunities are incredible, and it comes with that famously friendly Yorkshire welcome, a range of packages and complete versatility of the vineyard to make your dream wedding come true with bespoke options for an indoor or outdoor ceremony, outdoor blessing or magical twilight wedding.
Waterton Park Hotel
North Shire
What’s so special about Waterton Park Hotel? Oh, not much. It’s only an enormous Georgian island mansion surrounded by a 26-acre lake, accessible by a picture-perfect iron footbridge. In all seriousness, Waterton Park Hotel is one of the north’s coolest and most unusual wedding venues, voted “Yorkshire’s Most Romantic” by the English Wedding Awards in 2019. This isolated paradise has everything a loved-up couple could want for their big day, and the eye-watering vistas don’t stop at the water’s edge either. Once you’re back on dry land, the vivid green parkland stretches out as far as the eye can see. So, after your picturesque wedding reception buffet or BBQ, feel free take a wander back over the bridge and see what delights Waterton Park’s outer reaches have to offer.
A dream wedding is every couple’s fantasy, but what if we told you the ultimate fantasy wedding is waiting for you in God’s Own Country? That’s the aim of North Shire, a pictureperfect family farm set in six acres of rolling countryside. Their big secret is the grassroofed Hobbit house that acts as the bridal suite – North Yorkshire becomes Middle Earth. That’s not all, though, the wedding itself takes on a fairytale enchantment, with fireworks, music and even fire-breathers available to delight and dazzle the wedding party. Once the party’s over, your guests can pick from gypsy caravans, shepherd huts or even bell tents for their accommodation, while you head back to the Shire House for a cosy night in a Hobbit hole under the stars.
Camp Katur A truly unique and rustic wedding venue is something that many couples desire, and our recommendations for you would be Camp Katur. The 250-acre manor estate has the capacity to host weddings in marquees, tipis, yurts and even their very own rustic barn. With a woodland of tall pine trees as your backdrop, what more could you possibly ask for? Camp Katur doesn’t hold a civil weddings license, and most couples go to a registry office a couple of days before their special day to sign the legal documents. You can then hold your ceremony at Camp Katur wherever you like, whenever you want, and how you want, making your ceremony unique and special to you both. 18 Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk
Yorkshire Wildlife Park We all know weddings can get a little wild, but not usually this wild. If you’re looking for unusual wedding venues, Yorkshire Wildlife Park is just the place. By partnering up with the four-star Crown Hotel in nearby Bawtry, you can tie the knot surrounded by wildlife. Set against the park’s stunning backdrop, you’ll start your magical day in the park’s panoramic Outlook Suite. Once the ceremony’s finished, it’s time to get up close and personal with the animals, with photos at one of their wildlife reserves – visit the giraffes, lemurs, the tiger walkway or polar exhibit. You and your guests will get the run of the park for two full hours, before the evening’s food and festivities continue in the Outlook Suite or shift into the Tsavo Lodge marquee – the choice is yours.

New year, new designers IT’S ALL CHANGE AT INCOGNITO AS SPRING/SUMMER STYLES ARRIVE IN STORE. ncognito has been bringing the very best designer collections to Yorkshire and dressing discerning ladies for their every occasion for three decades now. The designer boutique, located in Bawtry, continues to appreciate the individuality and personal style of every client, enriching it through clothes that enhance, flatter and make a true statement. Sometimes, that’s under-stated, sometimes that’s spectacular, but it will always be appropriate. During the past 30 years co-owners, Bernie Gill and Jackie Reynolds, have offered a superb array of prestigious labels embracing a range of fashion trends. Currently, the luxury brands you’ll find at Incognito include Roberto Cavalli, Laurel and Sportalm to name a few. Bernie and Jackie say: “It’s been important for us to continually evolve and offer new designers when we think they will appeal.” Personal service will always remain in fashion and that’s where Jackie and Bernie excel. Bernie adds: “We know that many of our designer collections can be found in the bigger stores in London and other major cities, but what has enabled us to nurture a clientele for over 30 years is the high standard of service which has always been top priority for us and which the big designer stores are not able to compete with. “We are offering intrinsic style consultancy to every client – it’s our role to make sure that every one of them leaves Incognito with wardrobe choices that fit perfectly and are perfect for the occasion, whether that’s a day at the races, their children’s speech day or a night in with friends.”

Ring in the new year DO YOU KNOW THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ENGAGEMENT RINGS AND WEDDING RINGS? AND DO YOU NEED BOTH? RACHEL MARTIN ANSWERS YOUR EIQUETTE QUESTIONS.
o, your partner chose the perfect engagement ring – big congratulations are in order. But what’s really the difference between engagement rings and wedding rings? And, if you love your engagement ring so much, do you also need to get a coordinating wedding ring to match? Can you simply wear your engagement ring after you’re married instead, or would that be bucking tradition a bit too much? Is it acceptable to even wear your wedding band on the opposite ring finger? We’re here to weigh in on all your burning engagement and wedding ring etiquette questions.
S
Engagement Ring vs. Wedding Ring: What’s the difference? Traditional engagement rings characteristically have one dominant stone, which either stands alone or is surrounded by additional smaller stones. An engagement ring is usually given as part of the proposal, or if not, at an early point in the engagement. By contrast, a wedding ring is usually a plain metal band or a diamond-encrusted eternity band 34 Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk
that you receive during the wedding ceremony and wear from then on. Additionally, there’s also a major price difference between traditional engagement and wedding rings. Even if the wedding ring has stones, their total carat weight is usually less than the engagement ring and for that reason, a wedding ring costs significantly less than an engagement ring. You can, of course, throw tradition out the window. According to industry experts, women are now having more of a say in the designing of their ring and not only are brides parting with tradition, but they’re opting to diversify their engagement and wedding ring selections, with wedding bands offering the opportunity to embrace more flair.
The history of engagement and wedding rings Since ancient Egyptian times, engagement rings have been regarded as a symbol of love and commitment; their rings crafted out of plants growing along the Nile River. The ancient Romans were the first to place the engagement ring on the left ring finger, believing it directly connected to the heart and in 1477,

“Traditionally, you wear your engagement ring and wedding ring stacked on the fourth finger of your left hand. As far as how to stack them: tradition holds that the bride wears the wedding band inside the engagement ring so that it’s closer to her heart.” Archduke Maximillian presented the first recorded diamond engagement ring to his beloved Mary of Burgundy. Before this event, engagement rings consisted mostly of plain metal bands or less expensive gemstones. Maximillian’s diamond ring sparked a trend in Europe and across the world. During these earlier centuries, diamond engagement rings represented who the woman was committed to and it showcased the social and financial status of the man she was marrying. The ring, which is in the form of a circle, is a sacred symbol. With no beginning and end, the circular ring signifies wholeness, completeness and eternity.
How to wear your engagement and wedding rings Traditionally, you wear your engagement ring and wedding ring stacked on the fourth finger of your left hand. As far as how to stack them: tradition holds that the bride wears the wedding band inside the engagement ring so that it’s closer to her heart. Some like to wear their engagement ring on one hand and wedding band on the other, especially if they’re diversely designed rings that can’t be stacked.
When to pick out wedding bands Industry experts suggests that couples pick out wedding bands at least two months before the wedding; that way, you can account for any lastminute wedding planning details that might pop up while your rings are already in production. If you’re unsure about the kind of wedding band you want initially, wear your engagement ring for a few months before you choose the wedding ring. Your preferences might change, so take your engagement ring for a spin to get a better grasp of the wedding band you’re envisioning closer to the wedding day.
Do you need both an engagement and wedding ring? Ultimately, this really comes down to personal preference. If you like the traditional look, then yes, of course. Whether you’re adding an eternity band set with pavé diamonds or a plain metal band, a wedding ring/engagement ring stack is a timeless and beautiful look. Rings on their own, of course, are also gorgeous and instead of a separate engagement ring and wedding ring combination, some people opt for only a single ring. Why? Single rings can be more comfortable and less fussy than a stacked band and engagement ring combo and it’s one less ring to have to worry about losing, and you don’t have to worry about two rings perfectly lining up, either (it can sometimes be tricky to find a wedding band that matches and lines up perfectly with your engagement ring if they’re not purchased at the same time). You can also make a bigger investment in a single standout ring. The bottom line? There’s no right or wrong answer when it comes to choosing, designing or wearing engagement and wedding rings. You can wear none, one, two, three rings – the only rule you should follow is to make sure you choose whatever makes sense to you.

Looking for something extra special? CHECK OUT BETH AND FIN’S CLASSIC AND ELEGANT WINTER WEDDING AT THIS BREATH-TAKING BAWTRY WEDDING VENUE. oncaster couple Beth and Fin said “I do” at beautiful Bawtry Hall. Here, they tell Eastside what lead them to fall head over heels with the Grade II listed venue [and each other], from the first time they met to planning their dream day at one of the region’s most spectacular locations.
D
How did you meet?
We met a little over six years ago on a night out. It was completely by chance as we’d both planned to stay home that evening. But one thing led to another and we were introduced through mutual friends at a local bar and we’ve been inseparable ever since. When and how did Fin propose?
We got engaged exactly two years to the day we got married, on 28 December. We were in London for a few nights away and Fin proposed overlooking Tower Bridge. It’s a spot we always like to return to when we get chance, so the location was perfect. Why Bawtry Hall?
As soon as we got engaged, we knew we had to find an amazing venue. We’d heard about Bawtry Hall through a family friend and knew it had been recently renovated. We booked to visit in the new year and instantly fell in love. It was a completely blank canvas, but we felt that it had character, which was exactly what we were looking for. We spent the next few weeks looking at other venues, but nothing came close, so we booked the following month. 36 Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk
Tell us a little bit about your special day.
We got married at The Church of St Peter and St Paul in Barnby Dun, close to where Beth grew up. After a beautiful ceremony, 106 guests arrived at Bawtry Hall for our
reception, where they were greeted with prosecco and beers, as well as delicious mini Wagyu beef burgers, fish and chips and tempura king prawn canapes. What followed was a stunning five-course meal (especially the Brockmans gin sorbet). We then cut

our cake, which was a three-tiered champagne and strawberry concoction courtesy of Jane at Bawtry-based Pink Peppercorn Cakes. A further 60 guests joined us for the evening’s entertainment. DJ Paul Ruckeledge filled the dancefloor until the early hours and thanks to the team at Galactic Fireworks, we lit up the sky with the most amazing display. The night culminated with one final dance and a bacon sandwich as we slowly walked back to The Crown Hotel to spend the night in the bridal suite – the perfect end to a day that we didn’t want to end. Did you work with any local suppliers?
Beth and both of her bridesmaids each had a gorgeous bouquet created by Finishing Touches Floristry. Dawn did a wonderful job and each member of the wedding party also had a buttonhole or wrist corsage to tie in. Our day was photographed by Photogenick, who made us feel so comfortable from the very start and we absolutely love the moments they have captured. Tip Top Films also captured our wedding on film, and we can’t wait for the footage to be edited so that we can relive the best day ever. Beth had previously seen Max Bowker sing at an event and knew he would be the perfect fit for our reception. He was
absolutely fantastic and had us and our guests singing and dancing throughout the day. Karen and the team from All Occasions Venue Stylists dressed the venue beautifully. We had ivory floral arrangements on each table and the top table featured a vine of flowers which was filled with floating candles. With the winter weather in mind, every fireplace was decorated with lanterns to create a warm and romantic feel and the final vision was simply stunning. What would say to other couples thinking of planning a wedding at Bawtry Hall?
We couldn’t recommend Bawtry Hall enough. The venue itself is beautiful and offers a really great mix of classic grandeur but with a contemporary twist. The surrounding grounds make for some amazing photos and we received so many wonderful comments from our guests. The entire team were always there to answer even the smallest of questions and we were made to feel so special from start to finish. FISHLAKE
Turning the tide WITH THE WORLD WATCHING, THE COMMUNITY OF FISHLAKE PULLED TOGETHER IN THE MOST EXTRAORDINARY OF CIRCUMSTANCES. AS THE CLEAN-UP CONTINUES, CHRIS WILSON HEADED TO THE FLOOD-HIT VILLAGE TO FIND OUT MORE. Pam Webb, owner of Truffle Lodge spa
ishlake, the South Yorkshire village that looked all washed up when devastating floods left it under water and accessible only by boat, is fighting back. For several wet and miserable weeks in the run-up to Christmas there seemed to be more journalists and film crews than actual residents as the River Don burst its banks and flood water surged through streets and into homes, with devastating effect. The clean-up is not complete yet, and the question of how to make sure a similar disaster does not happen in future is something that will be tackled over the forthcoming weeks and months. But the roads into the village are open again and some of the hardest-hit businesses have bounced back and are determined to meet the challenges they still face head on. “We need to celebrate this lovely village and tell people that we are still

Pam became a familiar face on local and national news when the flooding was at its height, as she became an unofficial spokesperson for the villagers, some of whom were trapped in their homes as the water level rose. Her own plight also became well known as she discovered a flood exemption clause in her insurance policy, which meant nothing was covered as the luxury spa she had created alongside her home was saturated. Pam became the focal point for the battle to save Fishlake, the stress etched across her face as she gave a series of heartfelt interviews to TV news crews, making it clear that this was a devastating human drama with people’s livelihoods at stake. But that was then and this is now and Pam is a prime example of the

There are skips and static caravans on the driveways of homes that are not yet habitable. Louise says: “Sometimes it feels like we have not had a dry day since November. HEALTH & WELLBEING
Love and happiness TAKE POSITIVE STEPS IN 2020 AND BEAT THE NEW YEAR BLUES. BY RACHEL MARTIN.
ou’ve heard the saying before, and whether it fills you with refreshed energy or makes you roll your eyes, hitting the restart button on a few major aspects of your lifestyle can be a great way to inject some positivity into 2020. It’s incredible how powerful the effect a resolution can have on our psyche. New beginnings and fresh starts, exciting dreams and opportunities, leaving past regrets behind us and embracing the unknown; whatever it is that prompts you to make that promise to yourself, it’s likely because you desire one of the most fundamental and basic human emotions – to be happier. Your thoughts, actions and perceptions are what dictate how happy you feel, which in turn means that we are responsible for our own happiness. Take this responsibility seriously and you can easily start to do things that naturally boost your mood. To help you to get started, here are some simple things you can do to up your mood and beat the New Year blues.
Y

Healthy diet and exercise One of the most popular ‘resolutions’ is getting healthier. But where most people often fall flat is trying to completely overhaul their eating habits or crash diet and attempting to hit the gym five times a week in the first month. It can be tempting after the festive season to go too hard, too quickly and it’s no wonder this resolution usually falls by the waistline (pardon the pun) early into the year. However, it doesn’t have to. By choosing to follow a realistic healthy eating plan (we recommend asking your GP or nutritionist for their advice before making any large adjustments to your diet) and getting at least 30 minutes of exercise, three times a week to start, you’ll see huge improvements in your mood, energy levels and of course, your overall figure.

HEALTH & WELLBEING
Mindfulness and wellbeing Taking care of your body is a great first start, but it’s easy to overlook mental health. Begin the year with a smiling mind and reap the benefits of a new and improved positive mindset. We recommend making a small list of things you can start with: Do more for yourself. Too often we take care of everyone but ourselves, to the detriment of our own wellbeing. Take time for yourself. Even small, quiet moments reading your favourite book, catching the latest episode of your favourite TV show or taking a stroll before everyone in the house wakes up, can be a wonderful first start to taking care of you. Invest in relationships. We’re constantly engaging with others, but not the way we used to. Rather than texting or liking a friend’s Facebook photo, call them and organise a time to catch up. There’s nothing quite like facetime – the good old-fashioned kind. Sleep well. Get enough sleep. Turn off your devices an hour
before you hit the hay to secure as much solid, uninterrupted rest as you can (seven to nine hours is ideal). Focus on your strengths. It’s easy to be too hard on ourselves.
Give yourself a health boost
Self-deprecation may seem an admirable quality from afar, but if you’re constantly putting yourself down, both aloud and in your head, it’s time to readjust your attitude. A confidenceboosting daily or weekly mantra may help you. Why not write a list that resonates with you? Perhaps making your mantra your phone alarm in the morning is the perfect way to start your day with positivity. Remember, an improved mental wellbeing and the regular practise of mindfulness will make it much easier to carry out and stick to your other resolutions.
Start as you mean to go on with a healthy January. We don’t mean giving up all your favourite treats and spending every waking hour on the treadmill but introducing some small lifestyle changes could really make a big difference. Why not go for a walk on a Sunday afternoon, or sneak more of your favourite veg into your dinner? You could even introduce flowers into your home to beat stress or try an immune strengthening supplement to fight colds and flu and boost your natural defensive barrier.
Get moving
Pamper yourself
One of the best ways to boost your mood is with exercise and the good news is that you don’t even need to join the January gym crowds to do this. Try an exercise you enjoy, whether it’s walking, yoga or Pilates and blow away the cobweb’s new year. There’s no need for it to be a chore, either as exercise could be a hobby you start with a friend, such as tennis, or a great activity for spending quality time with the kids, like swimming and cycling.
If the buzz of festive season leaves you feeling frazzled, you have a great excuse to make the new year a time for relaxation. Use up that spa voucher you received for Christmas, treat yourself to some at-home pampering, splurge on new skincare products or book a table at your favourite restaurant. Make time for yourself and indulge in that welldeserved “me-time” – even if it’s simply a long bubble bath or tucking into a box of chocolates. Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk 45

Fürstenberg
Contemporary since 1747, the Fürstenberg has produced porcelain that reflects the time in which it is created; the spirit, the attitude to live, as well as the aesthetics. With that in mind, for over 270 years, Germany’s second-oldest manufactory has been creating and producing ranges that have become icons of dining culture. This claim is also applied to each new design. It is Fürstenberg’s craftsmanship that characterises its quality most of all. Perfection down to the last detail is only possible because, even today, the majority of porcelain manufacture is still based on handwork. The MARBLE mural is hand-printed by way of the traditional Japanese Art of Suminagashi and each roll is unique. Instead of designing patterns, Natascha
creates individual rolls of ‘paintings’ and with every mural made by the artist, each prepared and completed by hand, the murals freely reflect energy within its patterns. Each mural therefore has its imperfections; the colour overlaps, there are clear water markings and gaps within these patterns; expressing movement, imperfection and freedom. Fresh start for Wilding A wallaby that was shot and left for dead by teenagers in Berkshire has been nursed back to health and found a safe home at the Yorkshire Wildlife Park, Doncaster. The animal was wounded near a children’s playground. Mobile phone footage shows it tumbling to the ground after it was shot and man’s voice can be heard encouraging the laughing youngsters to ‘kill it’ in the shocking scenes at Datchet, near Windsor Castle, in Berkshire. But the brave animal managed to limp away from the gang and was later taken into care by a wildlife veterinary service before Yorkshire Wildlife Park came to the rescue and offered it a permanent home. The wallaby was rehabilitated in a quiet area with another wallaby for company for a couple of months and recovered well. Named Wildling by Rangers, she has now been introduced into the Wallaby Walkabout at the Park where visitors walk through the reserve on a path through the wallabies’ reserve as the animals come and go as they please. Dr Matt Hartley, Head of Animals at the wildlife park, explained:” The name Wilding was given to her as much like the Free Folk in the TV series ‘Game of Thrones’ as she is quite a fighter. When she arrived, she was very cautious of her new environment and of the other wallabies. Her behaviour was rather like a young child’s first few days at school. “But since settling into her new environment she is enjoying the space and the company of 29 other wallabies. She now heads towards the public footpath where visitors walk to get an up close and personal look at the wallabies. Wilding now happily plays and eats with the other wallabies too and is starting to find her place within the wallaby group. “It was such a terrible, cruel incident but thankfully she survived and we were glad that we could step in and help. She is now enjoying life in new surroundings where she will be guaranteed love and security, so it is a happy ending.”

New decade, new you
Comfort is key This trend combines everything you want to wear when the temperature plummets (or you’re sat beneath office air con). Forget hygge and its ‘cabin in the woods’ comfort. This is off-duty chic for the on-the-goer who wants minimal fuss and to get ready quickly in sumptuous fabrics.

I mean, they were so last year! True, some of our favourites will inevitably stick around, but here’s a selection of styles that will give your closet the freshness and vibrancy it deserves in 2020.

Shirt dresses Fit for the office or spontaneous trips to the seaside, the shirt dress is a summer wardrobe staple for a reason: it’s versatile. Opt for a classic white oversized style or, alternatively, add some zest to the look by selecting a pastel hue or print. Our recommendation? Alternatively, if you were a bit on the fence when you first saw the long-sleeve jumpsuit was making a comeback, now’s your chance to get in on the trend.

Join the elite THE VOTING FOR THE 2020 EASTSIDE RESTAURANT AWARDS IS NOW OPEN – AND THERE ARE MANY WAYS IN WHICH YOU CAN GET INVOLVED.
he search is on for the finest dining establishments across the Doncaster, Rotherham and North Notts region, as we launch the 2020 Eastside Restaurant Awards. Last year’s event was at The Hilton Garden Inn Doncaster Racecourse and the venue received widespread praise from the nominated restaurants, so we are delighted to be returning on the evening of Monday 5 October for what looks like being our biggest and best awards dinner yet. This glamorous black tie event is now firmly established as one of the big nights of the year in the social calendar; it also offers a huge boost to the local restaurant scene, as the winners enjoy their moment of triumph and all the nominated restaurants bask in the glow of positive publicity. The big winners of 2019 were Thai at the Sal who scooped two awards on the night – Best of Asia and the coveted Eastside Restaurant of the Year. Now the search is on again to find the venues that have truly excelled in the art of delivering delicious food in a superlative setting. All our recent award winners have been superb, so expectations are high.

Restaurants – How To Enter Book one of our Restaurant Awards package which includes a minimum of three quarter-page adverts. It also includes a full page review in the magazine and your entry to the restaurant awards. Stage 1: The restaurant review is written by one of our highly experienced feature writers, who will ring to arrange a convenient time to come and dine at your restaurant free of charge. They will take photographs, talk to the team and write about their experiences which we will then feature in Eastside as a full page FREE. You are scored by our writers for the restaurant awards, based on their experience, on various aspects of the dining experience including taste, food presentation, customer service, front of house etc. These scores are not published in Eastside but they help us form an accurate and balanced opinion. Stage 2: All entrants and categories (eg Best Indian, Best Afternoon Tea, Best Café etc.) will be announced in Eastside magazine, on our website and on Facebook at the beginning of September. We then give our readers
and your diners the chance to vote for their favourite in each category which will be added to the evaluations of our food reviewers to decide the category winner (similar to Strictly Come Dancing!) Stage 3: From all the entrants we then select the three restaurants with the highest scores to be shortlisted for the accolade of Eastside Restaurant of the Year. We then send a panel of ‘secret diner’ judges to experience all three restaurants and decide who the overall winner is. Stage 4: The Awards Dinner is on Monday 5 October when we invite all nominees to book a table or places at the dinner. All category winners will receive a special plaque that can be displayed in their restaurant. Stage 5: The awards ceremony and winners will also be featured within the November edition of Eastside, just in time for Christmas. Here’s a reminder to all restaurant, hotel, café and pub owners: to make sure your establishment is under consideration for the big prizes in 2020, contact Eastside’s publishing manager Terri Holt terri.holt@rmcmedia.co.uk or call her on 07841 901212.

EATING OUT
Take a break A WINTER VISIT TO THE HILTON GARDEN INN LEFT KIRSTEN DONAGHIE WITH QUITE THE DILEMMA... tepping out to enjoy dinner mid-January while my dining partner and I are in the middle of our New Year ‘diet’ was always going to be a challenge, but after lengthy discussions we decided to have the night off the calorie counting and just enjoy the experience at the Hilton Garden Inn – and we were so glad we did! We were welcomed by the front of house team at the Garden Grille Restaurant and shown to our modern styled table in the window. It was a shame that it was so dark as I’m sure the views over Doncaster Racecourse are simply stunning and we could only imagine the bustle of race day when this contemporary restaurant would truly come to life. Having said that the restaurant was quite busy with all manner of people enjoying the great food and wide selection of drinks. The menu could be described as a great selection of classic favourites with a few international twists and we were really spoilt for choice. Starters were eagerly chosen – Asian Fried Pork Belly (£6.95) and Crab Cakes (£7.25) and we were not disappointed – both dishes were beautifully presented and the portion sizes are certainly not underwhelming. The panko-crumbed pork belly was expertly cooked to show off this great cut of meat and was served
S
with a citrus raita and a tasty chilli and ginger dip. The crab cakes were full of fresh crab meat and expertly flavoured with chilli and lemongrass, the slight heat being offset by the accompanying luxurious salsa verde. Following this relatively light foray out of diet territory we both decided to ‘go big or go home’ with our main courses. The beer-battered Fish and Chips (£14.95) was the best restaurant served fish and chips I’ve had this side of the East Coast with the fish being exceptionally white and meaty and obviously really fresh. I’m quite particular when it comes to my fish batter so was delighted that it was light, crispy and well flavoured. The tartare sauce and rosemary sea salted skin on fries were just perfect accompaniments. My partner decided to plump for ‘The Mobley Burger’ (£15.95) named after Conrad Hilton’s first hotel and therefore the hotel group’s signature burger. With an introduction such as this expectations were high and it certainly didn’t disappoint. The brioche bun was piled high with a really meaty 6oz chargrilled beef patty, crispy bacon, emmental cheese, tomato relish, lettuce, tomato and red onion. With a side of rosemary fries and a creamy but light coleslaw, it really was a sight to behold. I am reliably informed it was exceptional as such was the quality
he certainly wasn’t sharing but to be honest I couldn’t have managed any. After a suitable break, desserts arrived – the diet now long forgotten – and we marvelled over the freshest Blueberry Cheesecake with a hedgerow berry compote (£6.50) and my favourite, a classic Double Chocolate Brownie (£6.50), slightly warm as it should be and ever so nicely soft and gooey in the middle. We came away feeling that we’d had a really great evening having enjoyed fantastic food in a modern and airy setting with attentive staff and really great service. We will definitely be making a return visit and would urge you to do the same – a great addition to the local restaurant scene. Aladdin COMEDY David Baddiel 12 February / Cast / www.castindoncaster.com David Baddiel comes back to the stage with a brand new one-man show, Trolls: Not The Dolls. Trolls – the terrible people who spend all day insulting and abusing strangers for no other reason than to fill the huge gaps in their souls. There is a common wisdom about how to deal with trolls: don’t, for goodness sake, encourage these people by replying to them. It’s a good law. And it’s one that David Baddiel has consistently broken. Because David has always seen trolls as hecklers, and if a comedian gets heckled, it is their duty not to ignore the heckler, but to wittily put them down. Over the years, David has spent a lot of time doing this, which has led him to think that there might be a show in it: a show that would say something about how we live now.

New head reverses decision In post for just a matter of weeks, Dr John Price is pleased to announce that previous plans to move Ranby House School – an independent school educating boys and girls age 3-11 – to the senior school site at Worksop College have been shelved. “In the short time I’ve been in post, it’s very clear that the Ranby House School site provides an idyllic environment for the youngest members of our community to grow up and thrive in,” he said. “The work of the team at Ranby over recent years has proved that this site, together with its amazing facilities, really does offer the best independent education in the region. And with growing interest in schooling at Ranby – last year we recorded the highest in-year recruitment for five years – this further encouraged us to review the original plan. “Ranby House School has clearly made a lasting impression on pupils and families past and present, creating so many positive memories. I am delighted that we will be able to continue to create many more.”

Confetti
Winter warning IT’S NO SECRET THAT THE WINTER IS POSSIBLY ONE OF THE WORST SEASONS FOR OUR APPEARANCE. FEBRUARY IS THE PERFECT OPPORTUNITY TO GET THINGS BACK ON TRACK AND NOURISH OUR SKIN, HAIR AND NAILS WITH SOME SIMPLE BEAUTY RESOLUTIONS.
Hair
Body
Our hair can be particularly damaged during winter, but there are easy ways to salvage your shine and bring back the bounce. To avoid breakage, brush your hair starting from the ends and work your way up to the root. Other tips include washing the hair with lukewarm to cool water, as very hot water can have a damaging effect, similar to using heated tools. When it comes to washing your hair, make sure all products are fully rinsed out to avoid irritating the scalp and use a good conditioner to keep the hair looking and feeling healthy. After washing, do not brush the hair immediately, comb through with your fingers first and then reach for the brush. As hair begins its journey in the body, diet is also crucial and certain foods that affect acne-prone skin can also flare up a problematic scalp. Other foods are very good for your scalp, like Omega 3s found in fatty fish like salmon.
opt instead for a chemical exfoliator (which gently remove surface dead skin cells) with ingredients like salicylic and azelaic acids. It might not seem necessary, due to the total lack of sunshine, but if you’re going to make any changes to your skincare routine this year, add an SPF to your routine. UV protection by day. Retinol by night. Two skincare decisions the future you will thank you for.
No one feels like slathering on body lotion after a shower on a cold morning and we find ourselves with the ‘out of sight out of mind attitude’. Despite being less on show than in summer, the skin is the body’s largest organ and needs to be taken care of accordingly. It might not seem appealing, but applying body lotion as soon as you can after drying off post-cleansing or bathing helps lock in moisture, and avoid fragranced moisturisers, which can lead to skin irritation (look out for ones containing vitamin E and aloe vera to soothe and hydrate). Another skin-saving resolution is to nourish your skin from within by drinking enough water. Water will help flush out any toxins from the body and will help your skin, hair and nails to flourish.

Face During colder months, taking care of our skin should be even more of a priority than in summer, and just a few resolutions will help restore your glow and can reduce puffiness and dryness. Try cleansing as soon as you get home in the evening and you will soon be in a routine, or maybe after dinner perhaps (instead of leaving it until bedtime when you may persuade yourself that you are too tried to take your make up off). Cleanse thoroughly with a product that is effective at clearing makeup and doesn’t strip the healthy lipids from the skin. Cut back on physical exfoliation and 66 Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk
