Inheritance Tax could still threaten your family’s prosperity Dale Murten Wealth Management is inviting readers to discover the simple yet highly effective steps you can take to protect your wealth and stay in control.

M

ore and more people are affected by IHT every year. It used to be a tax that was the preserve of the very wealthy, but escalating property values in the last ten years have put paid to that. For single people, Inheritance Tax applies at the top rate of 40% to assets worth over £325,000. This threshold is known as the nil rate band. For married couples and civil partnerships the threshold is £650,000. But the higher £650,000 limit only applies when assets are passed between spouses and civil partners and this figure reduces if any money is passed onto any of your benefactors during your lifetime. There are also other financial implications to consider, particularly if you are a widow, widower or divorcee.

And with the threshold remaining unchanged by the coalition government and subject to further legislation the

freeze will be extended up to and including the 2017/2018 tax year, more people could get sucked in as the minimum IHT threshold usually increases at a rate equivalent to at least inflation. Dale Murten of Dale Murten Wealth Management, a local Associate Partner Practice of St. James’s Place Wealth Management, is concerned that most people do not understand the implications of IHT. “It’s clear that people are confused by IHT policy and many mistakenly believe they are unlikely to be affected by it,” he said. And he is also concerned about a potentially more serious knock-on effect. “AWill* is vital in helping mitigate IHT,” said Dale. “Without a proper Will, people run the risk of their estate being severely reduced through IHT and also leaving

themselves exposed to the ravages of long term care costs later in life. It’s now more important than ever to seek professional advice and establish how you can protect your hard earned assets.” If you are uncertain about how you stand regarding IHT and would like to know more about how to prevent much of your money falling into the hands of Her Majesty’s Revenue & Customs, or your Local Authority through Long Term Care fees, please contact Dale Murten Wealth Management. New development takes flight Luxury homes at The Residence Lakeside launch in Doncaster.

P

rospective homebuyers can now view two stunning showhomes at Muse Developments’ eagerly anticipated The Residence Lakeside in Doncaster; a collection of 51 luxury two, three and fourbedroom homes at the edge of more than 50 acres of lake. Prices and plots for the homes have now been unveiled to the public; two-bedroom home start from £147,500, three-bedroom homes from £184,950 and four-bedroom lake side homes from £279,950.* Visitors to The Residence can tour a two bed, ‘Cobham’ home and a three bed ‘Lysander’, which have been stylishly furnished and finished by interior design company, David Phillips Group, to showcase the modern, spacious interiors. The scheme is located in an area which was once home to RAF Doncaster during World War 2, and as a nod to its past each of the five house types available are named after the renowned pilots and aircraft which gave the area its aviation heritage. This aviation concept also has inspired the interior design of the three bed showhome which features aeronautical-themed décor throughout.

The Residence, which is designed by Yorkshire-based architect Brewster Bye and built by Lovell Construction, benefits from a fantastic waterside location just two-and-a-half miles from the town centre. The scheme is close to a number of local schools, with great local amenities, including Lakeside Village and Doncaster Dome, on its doorstep. Comments Hollie Reynolds, residential sales and marketing manager at Muse Developments: “We’ve been overwhelmed by the response to the scheme over the last few months, and we expect the homes to sell fast, as Lakeside has already established itself as a desirable area for local people to live. We’ve tried to create the right mix of homes which will satisfy the demand we’re seeing from first-time buyers, families and downsizers.” The first homes are now ready to move into, with further properties available to buy off-plan. Every home features a private garden, a modern, integrated kitchen and bathroom and private parking, and several

come complete with garage. The new homes have been designed with sustainability in mind; with well-insulated walls and a high efficiency heating system which will reduce energy consumption, allowing for easier maintenance and enabling residents to benefit from lower fuel bills. There are a range of buying schemes available at The Residence, which include the popular Government-backed equity loan scheme ‘Help to Buy’ which enables first-time buyers and those looking to move up the ladder to purchase a new home with just a five per cent deposit. To book an appointment to visit the showhomes and view prices and plots, contact the sales team by emailing sales@theresidencelakeside.co.uk or calling 01302 898571. ES Charity

United Carpet’s Joanne Horgan put her best foot forward and helped to raise over £30,000 for a breast cancer charity.

W

hen it comes to fundraising, United Carpets franchisee Joanne Horgan knows how to walk the walk. The charity Walk The Walk started 19 years ago when 13 women powerwalked the streets of New York in their bras to raise money for breast cancer awareness. This blossomed into a number of annual fundraising events which to date, have made over £99million. Joanne’s friend Angela Bardell introduced her to The MoonWalk London 2015 challenge. “My daughter-in-law Emma Ackroyed was undergoing chemotherapy for

breast cancer when she found Angela’s Facebook post and said she’d like to take part.” Six weeks after Emma’s chemo had finished, she joined Joanne, Joanne’s sister Lisa Beaumont, and friends Patty Bower, Debbie Grayson and Angela to start training. Joined by a few of Angela’s friends and family, team 17 Strong was born. The group was later renamed #fitthesebabiesin after team member Cath Griffiths chose something more closely related to their cause – she didn’t know whether there was a bra big enough to fit her babies in! Angela’s sister Paula Beevor is a breast cancer survivor and was meant to fly from Australia to join the team, but after the news that her illness had returned, Paula could not make the journey. So as the #fitthesebabiesin team set off at midnight on 16 May for MoonWalk London, Paula and her

friends did a 26.2 mile walk at the same time in Australia. This year’s MoonWalk theme was a night at the movies, so the team dressed up as the pink ladies from Grease. “We had a rollercoaster of emotions on the night,” says Joanne. “We laughed and cried as we walked in our bras for a worthwhile cause, close to our hearts.” The group raised over £30,000. This is a fantastic achievement for the Doncasterbased team and an impressive contribution to the Walk The Walk charity. For more information on Walk The Walk visit www.walkthewalkfundraising.org

Outstanding offering Sizzling summer deals from £79 a week at Lincoln Gardens.

H

ome buyers looking for their own space this summer should visit Lincoln Gardens in Doncaster to find out more about owning a home for just

£79 a week. House builder Lovell Homes is offering prospective house hunters the opportunity to purchase a two-bedroom Ashworth-style home, which is available to buy through the Government-backed Help to Buy scheme. Complete with flooring throughout and a south-facing garden, the Ashworth is the perfect home for anyone wanting to get onto the property ladder this summer.

www.regionalmagazine.co.uk

The Ashworth style home also features a combined kitchen/dining room with integrated cooking appliances, a spacious living room, two generous bedrooms and a family bathroom. Beverley Johnson, sales adviser at Lincoln Gardens, comments: “Lincoln Gardens has been very popular with first-time buyers and the Help to Buy scheme has proved essential for many buyers looking to take their first steps onto the property ladder here. “Help to Buy offers a more affordable route into home ownership, because buyers need only a five per cent deposit to secure a mortgage. The Ashworth is a fantastic home

for anyone looking for a good deal this summer.” The £79 a week figure on The Ashworth is based on buyers purchasing the twobedroom house at £107,500 with Help to Buy and securing a 25-year mortgage with Nationwide at an interest rate of 1.89%, fixed for two years. Buyers wanting further advice on the home buying schemes available at Lincoln Gardens should visit the marketing suite and showhomes, open from 10am to 5pm, daily. Alternatively, call 01302 515865 or go to www.lovellnewhomes.co.uk for further details on available homes.

Jones and Co. Make a property trust will

Located on the border of Nottinghamshire and South Yorkshire the Best Western Plus West Retford Hotel makes for the ideal wedding venue. Located just five minutes from the A1 and 20 minutes to the M1, the hotel is popular for both local couples and those further afield. The 250-year-old grade-II listed hotel building is complemented by a choice of traditional, or more modern bedroom styles, but the emphasis throughout your stay is on traditional style combined with modern facilities. They hold a civil wedding license for several suites and their garden pagoda is also licensed for outdoor weddings. The hotel can cater for civil ceremonies and civil partnerships and wedding packages can also be tailored to match your requirements.

The benefits of a property trust will include protecting inheritance for children from a previous relationship, protecting up to half of the home value from care fees and protecting your property for the next generation. For property trust wills to be effective, you must own your home jointly with your partner. Most partners own their home as joint tenants – this means when one dies the home will automatically pass to the survivor. Jones and Co. can alter the ownership from joint tenants to tenants in common. This means you own a distinctive share, which you can then leave in the property trust, which grants the surviving spouse a lifelong interest in the home. Should the surviving spouse go into a care home, only their share of the home is taken into account – not the whole. The team at Jones and Co. includes members of the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners and Solicitors for the Elderly, so reassured you’re in safe hands.

The spice of life You can enjoy a good curry, whatever the weather, at Yash.

T

he days may be getting warmer, but that doesn’t mean our craving for spicy food is any less. Come spring, summer or winter, Britain’s loyalty to curry is something that never wanes. We Britons have a long and passionate affair with Indian cuisine which dates all the way back to 1809 when Sake Dean Mahomed opened Britain’s first curry establishment. When Chicken Tikka Massala was declared Britain’s national dish in 2012 it confirmed our passion for Indian dishes even further. We are now completely spoilt for choice, not only when it comes to selecting a curry, but a restaurant – which begs the question, how do you choose where to go? Of course the quality of food should take precedence, but style and top-notch customer service should also play a part. As well as serving fantastic fresh food,Yash in Retford gives customers an experience that rivals the region’s top restaurants. After many years in the restaurant business, Shaddi Rahman opened Yash in 2013. This month marks the two year anniversary of this successful, family-run restaurant. With the help of brother and talented chef Mohibur Rahman, owner Shaddi has developed a menu that offers many of the usual favourites, along with an impressive

selection of fish dishes that you don’t see in many Indian restaurants. Their specialties are particularly popular, especially the Macch Ar Bhat, a salmon fillet marinated in a special rich sauce, cooked in the Tandoori oven with medium spices and served with plain rice. The lamb shank is another firm favourite, cooked in a rich medium garlic sauce with kidney beans and coriander. While Yash is big on taste, they also cook with an eye on your health. Shaddi said: “Many of our customers comment on how little oil we use. We try to show people that Indian food does not have to be full of fat.” They also only use the finest quality lamb, chicken, vegetables and spices in the preparation of all their dishes. Yash are not only considerate when it comes to your health, they are also a business with a heart and an aim to contribute to the local community. Shaddi and his team are looking forward to hosting a charity event later in the year. Shaddi said: “It’s a fundraiser event

for Retford Hospital where we will be serving some great dishes and providing an evening of entertainment for all the family.” The fundraiser is planned to take place some time before Christmas, so watch this space. When you dine at Yash, you’ll not only enjoy the food, but the relaxed atmosphere, cosy interior and outstanding service from a professional team. And with an outdoor dining area coming soon, there has never been a better time of year to enjoy the spice of life. Open seven days a week Sunday to Thursday 6-11pm and Friday and Saturday 6-11.30pm. ES Visit Bawtry Charity Polo Cup – Sunday 5 July 2015 The ones to beat... The Crown Hotel have won the cup for the last three years

Friendly competition Who can steal the crown from The Crown? The teams are assembled and ready for the challenge of the Visit Bawtry Polo Cup.

E

xcitement is building in Bawtry as the town once again prepares for the annual Visit Bawtry Polo Cup. Eight teams will be saddling up to see who has what it takes to win. The event, which is now in its fourth year, is taking place on Sunday 5 July in the peaceful setting of the Vale of York Polo Club, Misson. You can expect a fantastic day out, filled with friendly competition for a great cause. The teams, made up of people from local businesses and recently chosen at the highlyanticipated draw at The Crown Hotel, include The Crown Hotel, China Rose, Fine & Country, Robinsons of Bawtry, The Vanilla

32

Rooms, Max Design Consultancy, Sutton Capital Allowances and Yasmine of Bawtry. The Polo Cup will raise funds for local charity Aurora, which provides support and care for people with cancer and their families in the Doncaster area. Aurora welcomes around 2,500 people through their centres each year and all their services are free. The charity’s trained therapists offer beauty treatments, holistic therapies and support to help people cope with the physical and psychological effects of cancer. Rebecca Dickenson, Chair of Bawtry Retail Association and company director of The Vanilla Rooms, is hoping to lead her team to

victory. “I can’t quite believe that this is our fourth Polo Cup and the second year that I will be patron for The Vanilla Rooms team,” she says. “We stand a good chance this year because we have Paul Piddington (owner of the Vale of York Polo Club) on our team and he’ll be the best player at the cup! “It’s going to be a lovely day out for families and friends and a great chance to see a unique, historical English game. We had between 800 and 1,000 guests last year and are expecting double that this year. Aurora does some great work so we hope the event will do even better this year.” The event raised around £4,000 for

Bigger and better than ever This year’s polo cup promises to be bigger and better than ever before and round one of the knock-out tournament will be full of excitement. No doubt the Crown Hotel will be looking to defend their 2012, 2013 and 2014 titles as polo champions. The matches are: Game 1 – Max Design Consultancy vs Sutton Capital Allowances Game 2 – Fine & Country vs The Crown Hotel Game 3 – The Vanilla Rooms vs China Rose Game 4 – Robinsons of Bawtry vs Yasmine of Bawtry “We wish all our teams luck and wonder if this is the year that someone steals the crown from the Crown!” says Rebecca. “Polo is a really great spectator sport and the atmosphere and camaraderie at our annual polo day means that everyone has a great time, especially if the sun shines.” The majority of teams involved in the Polo Cup are part of the Bawtry Retail Association (BRA) – a member organisation of businesses in the town. It was formed in 2011 by a small group of retailers and, since then, the group has grown in stature and recognition within the town and local community. Members work together to promote the town, attract visitors and business investment and host a calendar of events throughout the year. Bawtry Retail Association members meet bi-monthly at the Crown Hotel. Further information regarding BRA is available at www.visitbawtry.com or by contacting info@the-vanilla-rooms.com.

Aurora last year and things are already looking more hopeful, as energy saving specialists Green Eco Grants, who are sponsoring this year’s event, has already donated this amount to the charity. There will be plenty of food and drink available at the club, including a coffee bar and two champagne bars. The caterers on the day will be The Pizza Guy (as seen on The Apprentice), Jaysters, who will be providing a hog roast and barbecue, and Thaymers, who will be cooling us down with a selection of ice creams. However, guests are encouraged to get into the summer spirit by bringing their own picnics.

Gold standard

Graham Bodle of Walkers Nurseries is celebrating after winning a top prize at the Chelsea Flower Show.

T

here are many accolades worthy of recognition in the gardening world, but few hit the horticultural heights quite like a gold medal at the Chelsea Flower Show. This year Graham Bodle of Walkers Nurseries was awarded the esteemed title, for his Sculptor’s Picnic Garden. As well as long-running family links with landscaping and gardening (Graham’s grandfather Lawrence Walker set up Walkers way back in 1951), it’s clear he has a real passion for landscaping. “I love garden design,” he says, “I completed a degree in garden art and design at Leeds Metropolitan and it has been a huge part of my life ever since.” Graham’s successes include winning gold at Tatton Park RHS (Royal Horticultural Society) Show in 2008, with a sculpture’s studio and Walkers – garden and Summer Fete he has also 25 July10am till 4pm. worked Free entry. with Enjoy Punch and Judy Doncaster shows, live music, craft Deaf Trust, stalls, face painting, owl creating a demonstration, prize sensory raffle and lots more. garden. “Some of the children have been involved with creating this garden by growing the plants. It’s really rewarding to see them taking part in horticultural activities.” The Sculptor’s Picnic Garden, which featured in the Best Artisan Garden category includes many inspirations from nature, especially animals. Oak branches – reminiscent of a stag’s antlers – create a semi-enclosed picnic space and features various pines, conifers and grasses. The sculptures in the garden were created by Graham’s aunty, sculptor Hilary Walker, who used reclaimed tree roots, rocks and water, which provide the perfect habitat for a variety of wildlife. Most importantly, the garden offers a place to sit back and relax, and enjoy the surroundings. Graham says he had no idea they were going to win gold. “The judges use a criteria based on nine different factors including materials used, the theatrical or drama element, originality and the wow factor – but even so, you never know idea whether they will like what you’ve created.” Following such success Graham is giving next year’s show a miss, but with Walkers café and gift shop to run, there’s no doubt he will be kept busy. The café serves breakfast, brunch, lunch, desserts and even Sunday roasts, all at great value-for-money prices. Choose from hot or

cold options and a huge range of hot and cold drinks, including beer and wine. The gift shop is low key and selective, but offers plenty of items to peruse, including jams and chutneys from Bracknell Farm and the Food To Go counter is full with desserts and savouries to take away, made by Walkers’ very own in-house bakers. From pies and tarts to brownies and scones, there is something to tickle everyone’s taste buds. There’s no better way to complete a visit to Walkers than with a stroll around the grounds. With eight acres of landscaped show gardens surrounding the garden centre, there is a wide selection of plants and inspiration at every turn, with helpful staff always on hand to guide you in the right direction, and it provides the perfect opportunity to view the gold-medal winner in all its glory. While food and horticulture are a focal part of Walkers, over the years it has become so much more that simply place to stop off for a few plants and a cuppa. With a calendar packed full with events including inspirational talks, bee keeping experience days and afternoon teas, it’s the ideal place to spend a day doing something different. Quality Meats at Wholesale Prices My name is Bradley Botterill and I am the owner of locally based meat supplier Farmhouse Choice. When I left school at 16, I got a job as an apprentice butcher and to my surprise I picked it up very quickly. By the time I turned 21 Iʼd bought my own market stall at Doncaster selling a wide range of cooked meats, pies, bacon and sausages. However it was only three days a week, so I asked Farmhouse Choice my supplier at the time whether they needed a hand at their factory. Luckily for me a position was vacant. Within three weeks of me being there they asked me if I wanted to buy into the business and become a partner. At the time it was a big jump from a small stall holder to factory owner, it also required a small fortune to buy into the business.

But I went for it, I got accepted by the bank for a loan and within 18 months I had gone from working for somebody to owning a factory. Now aged 24 I recently entered my first pork pie competition at the British Pork Executive. It was one of the biggest in the country with 341 entries, I came away with champion pork pie maker! Also last month I entered the sausage competition at the Notss County Show and was awarded a gold certificate for my Lincolnshire style sausage. We are classed as a wholesaler but have recently opened to the public to offer quality meat at wholesale prices.

Break out the barbie Chill the beers, get some friends round and fire up the grill – here’s our guide to successful cooking in the great outdoors.

W

hen the sun is shining on a beautiful summer’s day, there’s nothing like whipping out the barbeque and inviting a few friends and family round for a good old shindig. You may be ready and raring to cook, but 12 months of wet and cold British weather has probably not been so kind to your trusty barbeque, garden furniture or even to your outdoor culinary skills, for that matter. So before you decide to rescue your rusty cooker, dig the crumpled deckchairs out of the shed and dash out to the supermarket to fight over the last steak, check out our handy barbeque guide and garden must-haves to ensure you have everything you need for the perfect party this summer.

Setting up the barbeque With charcoal cooking, you know it’s ready when it’s covered in a thin layer of grey ash. It doesn't take too long to reach this stage and there’s no rush to cook on it as it stays hot for a long while. Arrange the hot charcoal in the centre-third of the barbeque, so there’s room for you to move the food away from the heat if need be. Place your food around the column of heat, so as the food cooks and the fat melts, it won't splash on to the hot charcoal, causing flare-ups. This method should stop your food from blackening. If anything does start to cook too quickly, then simply move it further towards the outside of the grill.

Top tips for not burning your food n Don't cook too soon, use the charcoal’s heat, not flames n Use all of the grill space to cook, not just above the heat n If you have a lid for your barbecue you can use the lid to control flare ups

30 years and better than ever

As China Rose celebrate their three decade anniversary, we ask, what’s the key to success in business?

L

ongevity is a testament to the success of any business, but this is especially true of the often unpredictable hospitality industry. One such restaurant that has impressively stood the test of time is the hugely popular Cantonese restaurant, China Rose, which is celebrating its 30th anniversary. For three decades the venue has been at the very heart of the Bawtry social scene and has been one of the most popular venues for anniversaries, birthdays and celebrations of all kind. Owned by the Wan family, it originally

opened in July 1985 and moved to its current premises on South Parade in 1991, quadrupling its capacity to 170 seats. Since then it has grown in stature and popularity, gaining a reputation as one of the finest Cantonese restaurants in the region. China Rose has demonstrated true staying power over the years by evolving with the changing times, while remaining true to their vision – to deliver freshly cooked, innovative Cantonese food, using the finest ingredients, in opulent surroundings. “I can’t believe where the time has gone but I am hugely proud of what we have achieved and the superb reputation that the

restaurant has,” says Estelle Johnston, who for many years was the general manager and the public face of China Rose. In 2000 co-owner Louis Wan’s nephew Jason Kwan moved over from Hong Kong and was later joined by his wife Carly Hui who brought new ideas for the future to ensure China Rose continued to grow and prosper. They took over the reins from Estelle in 2012 and have continued their success ever since. “China Rose is a truly special place and we are so proud to work with a great team and fantastic customers,” says Carly. “It remains hugely popular as a place for special

Other charities that it supports include PACT (Parents Association of Children with Tumours and Leukaemia), British Heart

A refreshing change Healthy dishes, light bites and an inspired drinks menu – The Crown Hotel offers a fabulous dining and drinking experience this summer.

I

nspired by the latest trends and experiences, The Crown Hotel in Bawtry relishes the opportunity to introduce new and exciting concepts to its menu. So when managing director Craig Dowie returned from an Inca Trail hiking trip in Peru, he took great pleasure in introducing a special new dish to Bawtry’s dining scene. Before you recoil in horror at the thought of guinea pig – a famous element of Peru’s staple diet – gracing the menu, you’ll be pleased to hear that the new addition was in fact quinoa soup. This South American protein-rich grain, which has hugely increased in popularity in the UK in recent years thanks to its

superfood credentials, converted carnivore Craig instantly and he was eager to share his new-found love of quinoa with customers back home. This special soup is just one example of how the Crown meets the needs of its discerning diners. Of course, the restaurant will always be adored by those with heartier appetites – dishes such as the juicy 10oz rib eye steak, crown burger stacks and slow roasted lamb shoulder take care of that – but for Bawtry diners looking for healthier, lighter meals, they’re also hitting the right notes. Feast guilt-free on dishes such as green risotto with spinach, asparagus, broad beans, peas and fresh parmesan;

Cajun-spiced salmon fillet with citrus cous cous and herb crème fraîche; Thai marinated sea bass with jasmine rice and stir fried green beans; and fresh tuna niçoise salad with green beans, boiled egg, new potatoes, anchovies and black olives. And if quinoa isn’t on the specials board, superfood fans can still get their fix with the feta and beetroot salad, bursting with spinach, watercress, broccoli, broad beans, green beans, courgette, tomato, pine nuts, pomegranate and balsamic glaze. Those after an even lighter bite will find the Prosecco and platter offer, available Monday to Friday 12-5pm, suits them wonderfully. The perfect accompaniment to a girly catch-up, for just £20 you can enjoy a chilled bottle of fizz with your choice of sharing platter. The antipasti platter – a mouth-watering selection of continental meats, salami, parma ham, olives, sundried tomatoes, onion and herb bread, and buffalo mozzarella – evokes memories of holidays in the sun and is particularly popular on hot summer days. To match these tasty dishes, the Crown bar also has a great selection of drinks. The signature cocktails, hibiscus fizz and Grey Goose le fizz, are perennial favourites and never fail to add a touch of sparkle to a drink with friends. And the amazing new bottles of Bottego Gold and Bottego Rose Prosecco are already making waves with their striking look.

Gin connoisseurs are also spoilt for choice with five outstanding brands to sample. Why not try a William Chase with apple, a Bloom with strawberry, a Bombay Sapphire with lime, a Hendrick’s with cucumber or a Berkley Square on the rocks? However you take your gin, the Crown’s expertly trained bar staff can cater to your wishes. Alternatively, if you’re out and about in Bawtry this summer and fancy cooling off, pop into the relaxed bar to refresh with a soft drink. Fentimans’ beautiful rose lemonade and Victorian lemonade, and Belvoir’s organic lemonade, orange and mandarin presse and elderflower presse are unbeatable on a hot day, served tall with plenty of ice. The White Horse Inn combines the best of both worlds… traditional local and bistro-style restaurant where the emphasis is on high standards.

A passion for quality Words and photography: Phoebe Seymour

I

f you want to work out what kind of pub you're in, look to the clientele. There are two sides to The White Horse Inn in Retford. There's the restaurant side, where three men sit in business suits, eating three course meals and discussing office politics. Then there’s the pub side, where a man in t-shirt and jeans clutches a pint and watches sports on a huge flat screen TV. Owner Kara Wilkinson-Holmes has managed to attract two diverse crowds. This is down to her passion, not only for providing quality wine and beer, but for providing the freshest, highest standard of food possible. Kara is also an ambitious local businesswoman, having won awards for her established dry cleaning business K Kleen, before going on to win the North Notts

Business Person of the Year 2015 Award for The White Horse Inn, which she re-opened in January 2014. As I order a refreshing pint of Stowford Press, I’m greeted by a smiling Kara, who excitedly tells me about their menu and specials board. Many dishes have been selected by Kara because they are personal favourites. The pub has two fish deliveries a week and is proud to support local businesses by purchasing ingredients from Doncaster market. My dining companion and I sit in the restaurant side. Its white walls, exposed wooden beams and photos of jockeys give the place a country pub feel, while the goldrimmed plates and candlelit tables elevate the setting into something resembling a bistro. The menu certainly features more than your typical pub grub too. For starters, I have the chicken and brandy pate which is light with a meaty flavour which becomes more intense with every mouthful, while my partner has a fragrant and moreish cream of tomato and lovage soup. This is a herb you don’t come across very often and it adds a welcome twist to an old favourite. For mains I have the impressive paella, topped with king prawns and mussels still in their shells, and my partner has a chicken, olive and potato skillet, roasted and coated in garlic oil. The juicy prawns and pieces of chicken in my paella sit in a rich and zingy saffron-infused sauce. This would make a generous portion for a hungry guest, but is more than enough for two, as it is accompanied by two warm baguettes. Finally, I wolf down the American waffle, a sugary treat topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and toffee sauce, whilst my partner has the British school-dinner-style cornflake

tart, filled with sticky jam and smothered in single cream. Kara is evidently passionate about what she does. The food at The White Horse is of such a high standard that they have been invited to cater at the Royal Ascot in August. And, with their outdoor area and the Retford Beer Festival on the horizon, The White Horse Inn promises to be a great place to visit this summer.

Feel the fusion From cocktails to live music and Caribbean-style cuisine, Fiona Barber finds a eclectic mixture of delights on offer at No.7 The Rum Rooms.

F

ew things bring quite such joy to the world as music, food and drink. And when the three are combined together, the results are truly exquisite. No. 7 at The Rums Rooms on Market Road in Doncaster has created exactly that, with an innovative menu that includes a fusion of influences, a cocktail and rum menu to impress even the most discerning drinker and regular live music events. The downstairs bar is ideal for relaxing, with comfy sofas for couple to sink into, or huge upturned wooden barrels for groups to perch around. We arrived early one Friday evening and were welcomed by atmospheric jazz music as we wove our way through the already busy venue. With around eight tables, the restaurant upstairs is small, but is equally as atmospheric as downstairs. It has a shabby-chic style of exposed brick, pine tables, and large abstract canvases, which allows diners to easily relax and soak up the surroundings. To eat at a venue with ‘the rum rooms’ in its name without trying least one of their rum cocktails would be sacrilege, so I began with a refreshing old ginga – rum with ginger beer and lime – and my partner, staying true to the Caribbean theme, opted for a pint of Red Stripe. The menu here is a fabulous example of fusion food, with a strong Caribbean influence – all with a contemporary twist. I was unsure what to expect from the basket part of my broad bean, asparagus, olive and chorizo basket starter. But it turned out

www.regionalmagazine.co.uk

to be parcel of filo pastry, with all the other elements contained inside – a clever and delicious way to begin. My partner’s homemade scotch egg and borlotti bean casserole came presented beautifully on a black slate and was a tasty contemporary twist on an old classic. I was intrigued by the Indian spiced onglet steak, and it proved to be a winning dish. Served with diced Bombay potatoes, roast peanuts, cucumber raita and a bed of fruity

chutney, not only was the steak cooked to perfection, but the accompaniments created a wonderful combination of sweet and savoury flavours. My partner opted for a Caribbean classic – jerk chicken. But this wasn’t any ol’ jerk sauce from a jar. This was tender, flavoursome chicken, which came served in true Rum Rooms’ with-a-twist style on a boat of hollowed fresh pineapple. With crunchy coleslaw, a bed of rice and barbeque gravy, it was truly exceptional. Our desserts, although dissimilar, were equally as good. My partner’s Swiss roulade with hot vanilla sauce was perfectly fruity-butindulgent, and my chocolate and rum tart was deliciously smooth and came with a dollop of ice cream and fresh strawberries for a refreshing finish. Owners Jackie and Ian Bailey (left) – who also own the Mason Arms pub in Doncaster – change their menu seasonally to make the most out of produce and to ensure regular customers continue to be excited by what’s on offer. As well as their regular menu they host a steak night on Thursdays, which includes steak and a bottle of wine at £45 per couple, and there’s also a Mexican night on 9 July. Every Friday and Saturday there’s live music at No.7 and on this particular evening, a lady was singing along to the guitar. We listened for a while then left content, with all three boxes ticked.

Satisfaction guaranteed A homemade scotch egg proves to be the answer to an unexpected craving – and it’s not the only highlight on the menu…

I

t can come out of nowhere, the hankering for a certain food. Sometimes it’s the tantalising scent of a particular dish, a memory that makes your mouth water, or catching sight of someone else tucking into your favourite meal. Only one thing is certain – you won’t rest until you’ve satisfied your craving. But when my partner began yearning for a scotch egg recently, it soon became clear that the tasteless, oddly symmetrical supermarket versions simply wouldn’t cut it. Imagine his delight when right there on the menu of Thyme at Bawtry was a starter of homemade scotch egg. And this wasn’t any old savoury snack. A soft-boiled hen’s egg wrapped snugly in Cumberland sausage and then deep fried in panko breadcrumbs and served with mustard mayonnaise, sautéed black pudding and watercress was the best possible way to kick-start what turned out to be a wonderful evening sampling the delights of this café-cum-bistro. On my side of the table, though perhaps not quite in the realm of scotch eggs-tacy, my starter of market-fresh fishcakes, infused with fresh dill and lemon and accompanied by a good dose of citrus mayonnaise to dunk them in, really hit the spot. Great care is taken over the presentation of each Thyme dish – both starters, served on

50

smooth black slates, looked pretty as a picture – and the main courses boasted similar attention to detail. My pink and juicy pan roasted duck was well matched with fondant potato, smooth carrot puree and asparagus, and drizzled with a tangy pan jus. Curls of fresh carrot added a welcome crunch to the robust dish. My partner’s pan roasted sea bass was equally well received. The fish came draped invitingly over potato rosti and wilted spring cabbage and was finished with a powerful seafood bisque. He savoured every mouthful and had soon cleared the plate. Puddings reflect Thyme’s daytime offering beautifully and don’t shy away from traditional, hearty portions. My companion’s dime bar crunch was a wonderful cross between a chocolate pudding and a cheesecake, and my Bakewell tart was simply divine. I eventually had to beg them to take away the unfinished dessert. Despite being fit to burst after two scrumptious courses, my spoon kept finding its way back to the warm tart, so tempting was its sweet, sticky filling and crumbly pastry. By the evening’s end, my mind was made up. If my partner doesn’t demand we return for another scotch egg, I’ll be booking in for another round of Bakewell’s finest. Because, as you know, there’s only one way to really satisfy a craving

A new woman?

After a visit to Face Facts MediSpa, see the longevity of Rebecca Hume’s anti-wrinkle injections.

I

n last month’s issue, we pictured sales executive Rebecca Hume just before she tried out anti-wrinkle injections for the first time at Face Facts MediSpa in Bawtry. We are now thrilled to show you the difference the treatment has made to Rebecca – not only to her appearance but her self confidence, too. “It has had a much bigger impact on me than I expected – I feel like a new woman!” she says. “When I look in the mirror I feel a million times better and my friends and family can’t believe the difference. “I was very dubious about having facial injections but at Face Facts MediSpa every little thing is explained and they have so much experience and are so professional that I had complete confidence in the treatment. I was also surprised to find that it didn’t hurt at all.” Two weeks after her initial appointment, advance trained nurse practitioner/prescriber and owner of Face Facts MediSpa, Gaynor

Waddington, welcomed Rebecca back to the medispa to check that she was happy with the results, and provide a little top up if necessary. “Although this should be standard good practice at any reputable clinic, it is not always offered and sometimes is charged as extra,” explains Gaynor. “We Before have always incorporated this into every injectible treatment plan as it ensures optimum results and patient satisfaction.” The results of the anti-wrinkle injections depend on each individual patient but usually last around three months in the first year. After regular treatment in year one, in year two the effects may last longer and therefore fewer treatments are required. “We believe safe, quality products in all non-surgical treatments count towards great long lasting results,” Gaynor continues. “At Face Facts MediSpa our commitment to using top quality anti-wrinkle injections and dermal

fillers made by market leader Allergan has led to many loyal returning patients for over ten years, many of whom visit from all over the country and abroad. “We were delighted with Rebecca’s fantastic treatment results and her overall experience. Are you unhappy with your body? Are you ready to try something truly different? Liz from Elizabeth Ann Therapies says: Try HYPNOTHERAPY. We are not only what we eat, but we are what we think as well. Fabulous at 57: Sharon Stone

Hollywood star Sharon Stone shows how advanced aesthetic procedures can help you reduce wrinkles and turn back the clock.

I

f the one concern holding you back from non-surgical cosmetic enhancements is the fear that you will look ‘done’, an innovative new treatment could be the perfect solution. Restylane and Perlane dermal fillers by Galderma – available at Elements MediSpa on Thorne Road, Doncaster – are being hailed as one of the most natural ways to turn back the clock by subtly adding volume, reducing the appearance of wrinkles and enhancing firmness. Galderma’s glamorous ambassador – 57-year-old Hollywood royalty Sharon Stone – is relishing the opportunity to ‘make aesthetic treatments more accepted’, and her fabulous new look is testament to the company’s advanced aesthetic techniques. And Sharon isn’t the only good example. To highlight the difference the treatments can make, Galderma hired ten sets of twins, who varied in age from 33 to 63, and treated just one of them. The results spoke for themselves - in each case, the treated twin looked younger and healthier than their sibling. You won’t be surprised to hear that the untreated twins now plan to book the treatments themselves. The science behind Galderma’s dermal fillers lies in the ability of hyaluronic acid (HA) to attract water, which can ‘plump out’ lines and wrinkles. By injecting a synthetic form of this naturally occurring gel compound beneath the surface of the skin, the dermis is raised and the tell-tale signs of ageing can be gently reduced. It’s the exact opposite of the ‘trout pout’ and ‘pillow face’ headlines often attached to celebrities who have taken cosmetic treatments to the extreme. For more information about Galderma and all of the medispa’s treatments, products and services, or to book your appointment, visit the website (www.elements.org.uk) or call reception on 01302 34 34 32.

T

here are too many diets out there and too few results. If somebody says they have lost weight on an amazing diet, I wonder if they will feel the same in a few months. Only two per cent of people who go on diets manage to lose weight permanently. Going on a strict diet is setting yourself up for failure, and the more people fail the more they think they will never lose weight. The relationship we have with food is the reason most people become overweight. Naturally thin people seldom think about food. Whether your main goal is to lose weight, lead a healthier lifestyle, feel happier with your body, or just being able to shift those extra few pounds, the questions is how? Hypnotherapy is the answer. Your unconscious mind can be reprogrammed to change the way you think about food and feel better about yourself. It is the best way forward to stop overeating and help control any cravings. Hypnotherapy can reprogramme your thoughts, beliefs and attitudes towards food. It can help you feel motivated to exercise. Bad habits can be changed, emotional eating can be addressed. Give hypnotherapy a try, you will be amazed at the results.

Q&A:

Send your wellbeing questions to Liz @ Elizabethann61@live.co.uk One will be chosen and published monthly. Clinic @ The Vanilla Rooms Bawtry www.ElizabethAnnBawtry.com Dear Liz I consider myself to be a serial dieter, I am always on a diet, but am getting fatter and fatter every year, and more and more frustrated. No matter what I do, nothing seems to work and I have put on over 2 stone this last year. What do you suggest to help? Samantha, Retford.

Dear Samantha There are many things you can do, and habits you can change. If you are a member of the Clean Plate Club, where everything must be eaten even after you are full, simply leave something on your plate after every meal. This will help reprogramme your mind. Only ever eat when you are hungry and stop immediately you feel full. Your food will stop being enjoyable if you continue to eat after you are full. Hypnotherapy can help with all reprogramming of the mind. All the above are availabe with me at The Vanilla Rooms Bawtry. SEX, GREED & SCALPELS A list of celebrity clients, sex as payment for surgery and unlimited access to drugs, who would resist the temptations of plastics? Certainly not junior surgeon Robert Sutherland. Pulled into a world of greed, prostitution and addiction by his mentor, TV celebrity surgeon David McGregor and the corrupting influence of his uncle, Patrick Sharp.

Based on the real life experiences of James McGrath, Blow Row is a gritty insight into the corrupt world of cosmetic surgery. A salacious journey of greed, sex and excess, revealing the hidden lives of surgeons and their clients. This is the book they don't want you to read!

Interesting, different and thought provoking. Intriguing and provocative plots absorb the reader whether male or female. Its definitely not another insipid chick-lit book! Well written and fast paced, this book captured me (and my husband) from beginning to end. HHHHH amazon.co.uk review

MEET THE AUTHORS

James McGrath is a controversial figure in the cosmetics enhancements industry, appearing on many television shows including ‘How not to get old’ and ‘Face to face.’ His onscreen appearance with Lesley Ash, after her adverse reaction to lip enhancement led to his desire to pen a novel. Blow Row is inspired by his experiences in the industry, and while none of the characters

or events are based on real people, his insider knowledge gives this novel a truthfulness that readers will find engaging. Adele Carrington had her first novel Denial published in 2012, the success of this book enabled her to write full time. In collaboration with James McGrath, Adele Carrington has produced a work she feels proud to have coauthored. The intricate subplots and interweaving stories uses Ms Carrington’s skill with romance, erotica and character led action storytelling. With flowing prose and a story that is fast paced this makes the ideal holiday read.

BLOW ROW is available now in Paperback and Kindle format from amazon.co.uk

Living the dream

Head teacher Anne Camm always wanted to work in education and at Ashdell School she found her perfect job.

F

rom the moment Anne Camm lined up her dolls as a child and pretended to be at the helm of a classroom, she knew she wanted to be a teacher. The pinnacle of the illustrious career that followed these childhood imaginings came seven years ago when she was appointed Headteacher of Ashdell School. It’s the little everyday things that make Anne look forward to work each morning. From the girls’ first small steps in Snowdrops – the school’s Pre-School division – to their graduation at the age of 11, the journey they take is a privilege to both witness and contribute to. When the girls leave, Anne and her staff don’t just say goodbye to them, but to the whole family. “It may sound strange,” she admits, “but one of the greatest achievements is knowing the parents are sad when their daughter leaves Ashdell – it means we’ve done our job well.” By building partnerships with parents and

operating an open-door policy, the girls, their families and the staff are invited to discuss ideas and concerns as they arise. “I encourage communication with parents because, between the ages of three and 11, the girls are in my care and I take that responsibility very seriously. I have a duty to the pupils and their parents to provide the very best education and I do everything I can to ensure that we deliver an exceptional learning experience that the girls will treasure for the rest of their lives.” As a family-orientated school, Ashdell encourages pupils to value, respect and look after their school family as they do their own. It is this family feel that cements their reputation as a caring, friendly and welcoming school. A huge variety of activities and learning opportunities, along with the ‘have a go’ attitude, ensures the girls leave Ashdell well equipped to make informed decisions on the path they will take next.

“We pride ourselves on keeping many of our traditions alive but we also take pride in the fact that we are embracing the 21st century. As such, my ambition is to keep the school moving forward, embracing modern technology and maintaining the many traditions Ashdell is recognised for.” Ashdell School & Snowdrops 266 Fulwood Road, Sheffield S10 3BL Tel: 0114 266 3835 www.ashdellprep.co.uk

Focus on the individual Anne Jones of Sheffield High Infant and Junior School.

A

nne Jones first joined the school 20 years ago and has been Head Teacher of the Infant and Junior School, which teaches girls aged four to 11, for 13 years. Having first experienced Sheffield High School as a mum, she knows exactly what discerning parents expect. “We offer small class sizes, individual attention for each pupil, specialist music and sports teachers, an excellent partnership with parents, supervised care from 7.30am-6.15pm, close links with the senior school and a tailor-made curriculum. “Our current focus is to continue to promote thinking skills, resilience and independence of thought, and encourage our girls to become self-motivated learners. We have a strong emphasis on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) subjects and encourage girls to enjoy these at a high level.

“One of the most rewarding aspects of the role is leading initiatives, working with staff to implement these, and then seeing the impact that they have on pupils’ learning. I really enjoy spending time talking with the girls and, of course, teaching. As we also have a Senior School for girls up to the age of 18, I love seeing how the girls progress after they leave the Juniors at 11 and the confident young women that they grow to become.

“I don’t really have a ‘typical’ day; I enjoy spending time meeting current and prospective pupils and parents, meeting staff and observing lessons, doing development planning and tracking pupil progress. I also teach for an hour each day. “In addition, there are meetings both within school and the local community and, as we are part of a group of schools (Girls’ Day School Trust), I travel to our head office in London and also to other schools within the group to share best practice and work together on joint initiatives. Our busy extra-curricular programme means that there are frequent sports matches and concerts to support. To arrange a visit, telephone the admissions secretary on 0114 358 7602 or see www.sheffieldhighschool.org.uk 10 Rutland Park, Sheffield, S10 2PE Tel: 0114 266 1435 www.sheffieldhighschool.org.uk

Excellence brings growing demand John Hicks of Westbourne School and Pre-School, Sheffield.

J

ohn Hicks has been at Westbourne School in Broomhill for 11 years, during which time he has seen many advancements. Originally a boys’ Preparatory School that moved to co-education, girls now make up 45 per cent of Westbourne’s population, creating a thriving co-ed environment where girls and boys function effectively together – as is the natural order of things. “I have seen the school go from strength to strength, particularly in academic achievement, and I am proud that the school is now regarded as one of the best in the region. “As more and more people have discovered the excellent all-round education that today’s Westbourne offers, demand for

places has increased dramatically. I am delighted to have been closely involved in the acquisition of three new buildings and a brand new Pre-School to accommodate the growing Westbourne population, which ranges from three to 16 years of age. “I was recently asked what a typical working day encompasses and what I enjoy about it… well, for me it’s the people at Westbourne and the interaction with them that I particularly enjoy - Meeting and greeting pupils, attending and hosting assemblies, briefing staff, meeting prospective parents, teaching Mathematics and chairing meetings. My day also involves undertaking administration tasks, working on strategic planning and moving forward with school development projects.” “The most enjoyable parts of my job are

seeing the children develop in confidence, sharing in their successes both personally and academically, and being able to lead the school forward and achieve our aims. “We are currently very close to a two form entry throughout the whole of Junior School and I look forward to seeing this to fruition. My ambition for the school is to be full in all year groups and to continue the enhancement of pupil achievement in academia, sport, drama and music.” Westbourne School and Pre-School 60 Westbourne Road, Broomhill, Sheffield S10 2QT Tel: 0114 266 0374 www.westbourneschool.co.uk

Guests enjoyed a cooking demonstration by chefs Chris and Oliver, a delicious lunch and a raffle. Roccos were overwhelmed by the support and generosity of all their guests and are looking forward to hosting many more events in the future. Wellbeing of Women is a charity dedicated to improving the health of women

and babies, they also award training grants to encourage medical graduates and midwives to pursue a career in academic medicine and also provide information and education on awareness of health issues to keep women and babies well. www.wellbeingofwomen.org.uk www.roccositaliankitchen.co.uk

South Yorkshire cyclist Richard Nutt rode 2,830km over a seven-day period to break the previous record of 2,825km set by Bruce Berkeley in 2014. Richard, who is a member of Dinnington Racing Club, raised money for Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice, Headway Brain Injury Association and CRY (Cardiac Risk in the Young). Despite being hampered by strong winds and a slight medical scare during the early stages of his ride, he achieved the record with 30 minutes to spare. He said: “While I enjoyed every second of this challenge and I’m delighted to have broken the record, it has been an extreme test of endurance.”

Accolade for Wildlife Park Award-winning Yorkshire Wildlife Park has become part of the prestigious TripAdvisor Hall Of Fame. The park got the honour after winning the website’s Certificate of Excellence for the fifth year running. YWP achieved an overall four and a half out of five mark, to enter into the 2015 TripAdvisor Hall of Fame, which can only happen when an attraction manages five consecutive years of the top award. Director Cheryl Williams said: “This is a remarkable achievement. We continually strive to improve the visitor experience and this accolade is proof we are succeeding.”

Centre hosts art exhibition

In addition to providing a dynamic retail experience Doncaster’s Frenchgate Centre is now hosting a contemporary art exhibition. Local artist and curator Rama Ramski spotted the space and wanted to exhibit work from Yorkshire-based artists. The space was transformed to feature a firstclass exhibition of contemporary art by 15 artists.

Queen Ethelburga’s Collegiate Independent Education Girls & Boys 3 to 19 years Day & Boarding Thorpe Underwood, Yorkshire. Phone: 01423 333 330 Email: info@QE.org Web: www.QE.org

Are we all about academics? No, but were you aware the Daily Telegraph and The Times both rank QE College as the top most academically successful day and boarding school in the North for A*/ A grades at A Level and equivalent results and our Faculty of Queen Ethelburga’s, the third most academically successful co-educational day and boarding school in the North for A*/ A grades at A Level and equivalent results?

Are we all about Sport? No independent school in the North has the equivalent of our £16m Sports Village. A parent said we are now in a league above the rest. See: www.sportsvillageqe.org

Are we all about superb facilities? No, but we have invested over £80m in superb new teaching facilities and resources in the last 8 years - way more than any other independent school in the North.

Are we all about boarding? No, but no one comes close to the quality of our boarding accommodation. The best in the UK. All bedrooms have private bathroom, air-con, TV, phone & mini-kitchen.

Are we all about day pupils? No, but it is interesting to note our day fees are, on average, over 14% less cost than other local independent schools and our bus service covers a very big local area.

Is it all about Scholarships and Awards? No, but then again who else offers over £3m in Scholarships and Awards every year? Even without any form of Scholarship or Award, sending your child to QE could save you between £3,000 and £7,000 in day fees a year, compared to elsewhere.

All of the above are perhaps the reasons why appreciably more parents have chosen QE this year than last year. “ We were looking for our children to change schools. However in the independent sector this has financial implications. Our problems in this regard were solved by the offer of Day or Boarding Awards (our choice) for both children of First Term Free. They moved, are now happy, and doing very well. QE is growing in size because it is run in a refreshing, modern and much better way. There are plenty of day children.”

Enjoy a 6th Form education at QE and pay no fees!.... Day Award up to £25,000, Boarding Award up to £65,000 If your child is predicted; 9 Grade A star GCSE’s they could be entitled to 100% of the fees 8 A star and 1 A Grade GCSE’s worth up to 85% of the fees 7 A star and 2 A Grade GCSE’s worth up to 70% of the fees 6 A star and 3 A Grade GCSE’s worth up to 50% of the fees

FIRST TERM FREE Day or Boarding Worth up to £9,795 Continues for 2014-15 (a) First Term Free for Years N1 to 8 inclusive, or (b) 50% off First Term’s Fees for Years 9, 10, 12. SPECIAL BOARDING AWARDS Worth up to £75,500 Awarded to outstanding, high achieveing students in categories Academic and/or Sport. Awards based on experience and ability, subject to interview and assessment. (Note a 30% award may be given under this scholarship type for our Elite Sport programmes). FAMILY SIBLING AWARDS Day & Boarding Our discounts are bigger than others, if indeed they even offer them. Brothers & sisters - boarders from 12% - 20%, day pupils 10%.

Yorkshire Cricket teams up with leading independent school Queen Ethelburga’s.

Exciting partnership

T

he Yorkshire County Cricket Club (YCCC) has agreed a partnership with one of the country’s leading independent schools, Queen Ethelburga’s in

York. The exciting partnership will see both institutions develop a number of initiatives, including a joint cricket academy for talented and committed players aged 16-19 and Queen Ethelburga’s Cricket Academy Programme, which will aim to maximise the development of players from the ages of 11 to 16, with academy under 12s and under 14s playing district and county matches. Both programmes are supported by YCCC, which develops cricketing potential while allowing students to access an outstanding academic education. Yorkshire’s director of cricket Martyn Moxon says: “It is very exciting that we are able to develop our successful academy under the auspices of the region’s leading independent school for sport in Queen Ethelburga’s. “The fundamental goal of the Yorkshire Cricket Academy Programme recognises that

www.regionalmagazine.co.uk

players develop at different ages. To achieve this, a detailed coaching and playing programme has been developed with the school, to provide everything that is required from a cricketing point of view. Added to that, students will have the advantage of receiving a full-time independent school education at one of the highest-performing establishments in the country.” Former Yorkshire cricketer and Queen Ethelburga’s director of cricket Ishy Dawood says this is an amazing opportunity for young cricketers to get top-level coaching as well as an outstanding academic education. “The programme is a brilliant chance for Queen Ethelburga’s to work with Yorkshire County Cricket Club to help develop the potential of young players. “Academy students will need to be passionate about the sport and have the drive and commitment to play and train at the very highest levels. It will also be a fantastic chance for pupils to learn in an excellent academic establishment. “Queen Ethelburga’s has been ranked as one of the top independent schools in the country and our cricket staff will work very

closely with our teachers to make sure players achieve highly both in the classroom and on the field. If you want to play cricket at the top level in the region and learn in a firstrate school, then our academy could be the answer.” The elite tier players will represent the school in the national T20 competition against the strongest school sides in the country. Under the guidance of YCCC, players will have the chance to play for the county in the English and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) Yorkshire premier league on a Saturday afternoon and play further competitive fixtures for Queen Ethelburga’s against county cricket academies, universities and county-age group teams on Sundays. Students will be given bespoke training programmes including access to a full-time strength and conditioning coach and access to physiotherapy treatment and sports massages.
