THE DC INTERIORS SALE IS THE IDEAL CHANCE TO REVAMP YOUR KITCHEN OR BEDROOM.

Snap up some classic style he summer sale is now on at DC Interiors, and with more than 400 styles of kitchens and bedrooms available in a wide range of colours, they have something for everyone. Whether your taste is classic or contemporary, their friendly staff are on hand to help you choose. If you prefer a traditional, rustic look for your home, DC Interiors offer a stunning range of farmhouse-style wooden kitchen doors. For a more modern look, their highgloss, vinyl or laminate selections have you covered. A DC Interiors spokesperson said: “People often find it difficult to know where to begin, but DC Interiors will guide you gently through the whole process, from the first measurements to the final installation. “You will initially be offered a free, noobligation design service, where an experienced designer comes to measure your room and discuss ideas with you. The information will then be used to draw up a design that meets your exact specifications. “We design and manufacture all our own units and, in most cases, make any size required. This means a far better looking and working kitchen or bedroom.” Established in 1985, DC Interiors – which has showrooms in Maltby and Edenthorpe – have built up a strong reputation over the years, with much custom coming from wordof-mouth recommendations. All plumbing, gas and electrical work will be included as part of the fitting service, and most projects are completed in two to three days. DC Interiors has now fitted over 10,000 kitchens, bedrooms and studies, all uniquely designed and produced in their own factory. Over the last few years, the business has helped design and install a state-of-the-art

kitchen on BBC One’s DIY SOS and has provided a free-of-charge ‘milk’ kitchen to the Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice. Their largest customer source is through recommendation. Time after time their customers recommend them to their friends and family, making up 70 percent of their business. At DC Interiors, you will find a business big enough to cope, but small enough to care for its customers. The staff pride themselves on their friendly, personal approach, with no pressure or hard-sell tactics. Why not give them a call today and see what they can do for you? Garden of delights RACHEL MARTIN DISCOVERS AN UNEXPECTED TREAT AT WALKERS NURSERIES. n 1951, Lawrence and Vera Walker purchased a plot of land just outside of Blaxton, Doncaster. The land had never before been ploughed, yet two years later they had enough crops to sell, and as well as passing trade, Lawrence would ride his motorbike with a sidecar full of produce to Doncaster market to set up his stall. So Walkers Nurseries - then known as Walker's Roses - was born, and today, the show gardens exhibit where the roses were once grown on site. But it’s not only the beautiful displays of seasonal plants that draw in people in their droves, as from breakfast to supper, the charming Garden Restaurant is crammed with diners, digging into deli savouries, homemade sandwiches and fresh from-the-oven scones. The restaurant itself is a large, bright space and the order station is well placed, with plenty of staff on hand and menus displayed on blackboards and the walls. After some thought, we plumped for the Walker’s Ploughman’s (£6.75) - which I spotted being served across the dining room - and a pesto, tomato and mozzarella panini (£6.45). Though there are other less calorific dishes

I

are available, too. The British summer, it has been said, consists of two fine days and a thunderstorm, and though we were awaiting a heavy downpour, we opted to dine alfresco; looking out over the koi pond, which provided a pleasant setting for a catch-up over a strawberries and cream loose leaf tea (£2.55) and large Americano (£2.60). When our food arrived, there were raised eyebrows - this was not what we were expecting from a garden centre - the portions were more than generous and beautifully presented, and the vibrant produce did all the talking. The ploughman’s was piled high with slabs of golden as a spring buttercup cheddar cheese, award winning pork pies, a good local chutney and green salad. And for £6.75, it was outstanding value. Toasted on the outside and crisp against the paleness of the mozzarella, the panini arrived teeming with decidedly comforting fillings, accompanied by a generous portion of side salad, hand cooked chips and homemade coleslaw. There’s certainly no need to fill up on breakfast before your arrival.

I was unable to resist the housemade baked vanilla cheesecake (£3.25), which was as light as can be, whilst my dining companion opted for the banoffee pie (£3.25), protesting that he wouldn’t be able to finish, as it was so large, but somehow he managed - I may have helped. For what it is – delicious and absolutely right for its beautiful surroundings – Walker’s Garden Restaurant is a delight, where nothing is quite as it seems. It’s better. Sweet and spicy PHOEBE SEYMOUR SAMPLES POPPADOMS & CREAM – AN ICE CREAM PARLOUR WITH A SIDELINE IN CURRY. any people who walk past Poppadoms & Cream with its tempting neon signs declaring ‘Crêpes’, ‘Waffles’ and ‘Shakes’ may think this is just another ice cream parlour, but there’s more to this eatery than Instagram-ready desserts. Past the rows of brightly-coloured gelato is a cosy, dimly lit curry house. Though Poppadoms & Cream is a relatively new venture, there has been an Indian restaurant on this spot for the past 30 years. Manager Sajid Mahmood has worked at the restaurant since 1989, when it was called the Taj Mahal. Extending a warm welcome, Sajid gave us a wide range of dishes to mull over – all colour coded, so you could clearly see how hot the dishes were and whether they contained meat, seafood or were vegetarian. My mother and I started with some crisp poppadoms and a pickle tray. Though I only had a Coca-Cola (£1.95), there’s something so much better about Coke served from glass bottle. Mum had a humble soda and lime (80p), but the restaurant does have a ‘bring your own’ policy in place. I started with a classic onion bhajee (£3.50), while mum had the chicken tikka (£3.50). Served with onions and still sizzling

M

in the pan, I had a moment of food envy, but once I’d drizzled some raita over my bhajee and bit into its soft centre, I knew I’d made the right choice. On to mains, I had the paneer masala (£8.95) and mum, who usually opts for a jalfrezi, decided to mix things up with a chicken hyderabadi (£9.95). This awardwinning specialty had all the spiciness of a jalfrezi, yet had a sweeter side, thanks to its cream and yoghurt-based sauce, finished off with garlic and ginger. The interesting thing about masalas is that no two are ever the same. Rather than having the creamy base many are known for, this one was more zesty and aromatic owing to its burst of fresh coriander and ginger. A star is nothing without its supporting cast, and our sides of garlic nan (£2.50) and a Chineseinspired special fried rice (£2.95), were somehow able to complement both our mains. The dessert menu with its crêpe, waffle, ice-cream and milkshake sections was even more tempting and difficult to choose from. Finally, I settled on The Oreo Sundae (£5.50) and mum had the Mango Tango Milkshake (£3.95). Both were topped with mountains of cream – mum’s with a slice of pineapple and

mine with a whole Oreo on top, as well as plenty of wafers and crumbled cookie – and that’s before we even tucked into the delicious ice-cream underneath. Though Poppadoms & Cream is worth going to just for a dessert run, it’s well worth taking advantage of the Three Dish Set Price Menu, which includes one starter, one main and one side for just £12.95. You can even add a dessert for an extra £4. Whether you’re looking for something spicy or sweet – or anything in between – you’ll find them all under one roof at Poppadoms & Cream. DONCASTER RAMBLERS ARE ON THE MARCH – AND THEY WANT YOU TO GO WITH THEM, SAYS PHOEBE SEYMOUR. alking is such a simple activity for many people, but has so many amazing benefits. Not only is it good for our physical health, it does wonders for our mental health too. So it’s no wonder that the Doncaster Ramblers are keen walkers, who are on a mission to get the whole town moving. The Doncaster Ramblers are part of national charity, The Ramblers Association, which was officially created in January 1935. Their aim is to promote walking for health and wellbeing, as well as being stewards of over 590 footpaths and rights of way in the Doncaster area. “Taking part in one of our lead walks, which we do every Tuesday and Saturday throughout the year, (and Thursdays in summer) is the best way to make new friends, and see new things,” says Doncaster Ramblers publicity officer, Peter Rowsell. “Our walks are safe, and you don’t need the fitness of a mountain goat to join in. Once you’ve completed a walk with us you’ll feel exhilarated and lighter in spirit.” Out of the estimated 250 Doncaster

group members, between 40 and 50 are active walkers who take part in the majority of the weekly walks. If you’re not sure if the group is for you, their Thursday summer walks are ideal for beginners. Not only do the group highlight the best walking routes in the Doncaster area, they also take trips further afield. These tend to be within a maximum drive of one hour. “Although based in Doncaster, we venture across the region into Lincolnshire, Nottingham, Humberside, and of course, Derbyshire. But Doncaster is where our heart is, which is why we spend all year round surveying and inspecting the 590 footpaths in the DMBC area, clearing nettles and brambles, and repairing stiles, so they are safe for the general public to use. In particular, the Doncaster Ramblers are heavily involved in Doncaster Council’s programme of led walks called Get Doncaster Moving. “We’re big believers in trying to get more people out walking. Doncaster Council is spending more money on trying to get people to do more exercise, whether that’s

dancing, cycling or keep fit classes, but obviously The Ramblers concentrate on the walking side of things.” The Doncaster Ramblers are also working with Sports England to run a programme called Walks for Carers. People who are caring for the elderly or children with learning difficulties can sometimes feel isolated. The scheme will therefore consist of short walks between one and five miles so that carers and those they care for have the opportunity to get out and about. After all, Peter and the group believe walking should be an accessible activity for all. “What we do is not so much for the Ramblers, but for Doncaster people. We’ve got a lovely city, we’ve got loads of footpaths and we want to encourage people to use them.” So whether you’re a regular walker looking for new routes and challenges, or a complete novice, why not become a member of The Ramblers’ Association? Visit www.ramblers.org.uk to register to join and then select the group (eg The Doncaster Ramblers) you’d like to be affiliated with.

TRY THIS FOR A RAMBLE! Consider yourself a beginner to walking? The Doncaster Ramblers have just the route to get you started around Cusworth Hall. 1 Start at the back of Cusworth Hall and walk diagonally right, downhill to the corner of the lake. 2 Turn right and follow the footpath towards the motorway. Head towards the trees and under the motorway. 3 Now you’re in open country, go towards the barn in the middle distance, noting overhead power lines. 4 Just before the barn, turn left. Head south to Sprotbrough. Cross the road and turn right. Watch out for the fingerpost and in 200m, turn left beside the cricket field. 5 Spot the rusty gate on the right, then head for the stone stile in the top left hand corner. 6 Turn left, and at the church, left again. Note the bistro on the right. Cross the road and pass through the kissing gate in the bushes. 7 Now in the small housing estate, continue straight ahead through a narrow passageway, which leads to a footbridge over the motorway. 8 Back in open country with crops on either side, continue straight ahead on the footpath. Cross the footbridge over the Trans Pennine Trail, immediately turn left, then left again down the steps. 9 At the bottom, turn left on the Trans Pennine Trail. Continue for about 1,500m until reaching a crossing of paths and an information board on the left. 10 Take the left most path back to Cusworth Hall, where the final few hundred metres are up hill. This walk is 4.5 miles long.

Pantone colours

Make it GREAT outdoors

Those trend-setters at Pantone have created a cool and calming colour palette perfect for gardens. The 'verdure' palette features colours naturally found in vegetation and woodland. This means berry-infused purples, wood reds, eggshell blues and foliage greens are sure to look great in any garden. Couple coloured clay pots with flowering herbs such as lavender, rosemary and Thai basil or paint your fences and furniture in these key colours.

PHOEBE SEYMOUR’S GOT SOME HINTS AND TIPS FOR MAKING THE MOST OF YOUR GARDEN THIS SUMMER. espite the unpredictable British weather, the UK is embracing an outdoor lifestyle like never before, with sales of garden furniture, barbecues and garden accessories expected to grow by three to four per cent annually right up to 2021. And with summer finally in full swing, it’s time to dress our gardens with all the latest on-trend accessories and plants to impress our family and friends in time for the garden party season. Here are 10 of the biggest garden trends sweeping the nation in 2018.

D

Grow your own veg With the emphasis on more ecologically and naturally grown produce in recent years, we have seen a huge increase in people growing their own vegetables. Whether you have a big garden or a small balcony, you’re sure to find seeds and grow bags to fit your outdoor space. Carrots, green beans, tomatoes, cucumbers and lettuces are said to be the easiest vegetables to grow in the UK climate, and with plenty of books and YouTube tutorials on the web, even those without green thumbs are sure to succeed.

Pizza ovens

Japanese gardens The Japanese art of wabi-sabi is an acceptance of the natural cycle of growth, decay, and death. Wabi-sabi is nothing new to the Japanese, who have practiced this art since the 15th century. However, it is becoming an increasingly appealing trend to busy westerners, who have little time to perfect their gardens. This trend is all about balancing nature and nurture and celebrating the beauty of imperfections such as overgrown perennials, moss-covered stones and weathered pots. 40 Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk

Move over barbeques – outdoor pizza ovens are the latest outdoor culinary trend sweeping the nation. There are now a wide range of wood-fired ovens on the market, from stand-alone smaller models, to bigger brick-built ovens to suit your garden. So embrace al fresco dining and invite your loved-ones over for a pizza party this summer.

FEATURE

OUTDOOR STRUCTURES With al fresco dining being popular and the British climate being unpredictable, outdoor structures are a must for 2018 – but not just any awning. Pergolas with integrated drainage, lighting and heating will be the must-have garden feature, while outdoor kitchens will also continue to grow in popularity, with dedicated spaces for cooking, eating and entertaining becoming a central focus.

Copper accents If metallics are more your style, copper is back in a big way this year. Real and rusty copper accessories that were once shunned to the back of the shed can now be brought to the forefront. But if you’d rather introduce sparkling new items, copper-coloured lanterns and copper-effect stainless steel structures will bring your garden right up to date.

SOLAR LIGHTS To keep your garden parties going long into the evening, you’ll need some good lighting. Solar lights mean your lamps and fairy lights are charged and ready to go with no need for plug sockets and batteries. From stylish ornamental lamps, to more practical lanterns, there’s now a huge range of lighting options to choose from.

PRACTICAL SHEDS Sheds have become so much more than just a place to store your lawn mower. They have become rooms for our hobbies and businesses to flourish. Some use garden rooms as yoga studios, while others just need a ‘man shed’ to relax in and while away a couple of hours. What’s more, there are plenty of compact multipurpose sheds with clever storage solutions to make full use of what little space you have.

Exotic shrubs As well as native plants in Pantone colours, exotic plants in bright shades are also taking centre stage. Euonymus oxyphyllus, an elegant, slow-growing shrub from Korea is becoming increasingly popular thanks to its rich, emerald green leaves which turn to shades of yellow, bronze and red in the autumn, and produce a spectacular show of colour in the summer from its cherry-like fruits.

Limestone After featuring in James Basson’s awardwinning garden at the RHS Chatsworth Flower Show last year, limestone is making a comeback. But rather than the bright white variety, we will be seeing a range of harder-wearing stones in mid-tones to bring out the warmer tones in our gardens. Expect to see a mix of different coloured pebbles in complementary shades Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk 41

Relaxing Rioja PHOEBE SEYMOUR FINDS THE IDEAL ANTIDOTE TO MONSTER MONDAYS. y friend Shauna and I have had so many stressful Mondays, that when we have a particularly bad one, we call it a monster Monday. Our visit to wine and tapas bar, Rioja, could therefore not have come at a better time. As I gazed in wonder at the wide selection of wines – and the rare and exotic bottles of rum – I realised this venue would provide the perfect pick-me-up. Impressively hand-built by owner Lee Needham, along with his father and the chef, the interior in Rioja is both stylish and relaxing. Huge, low-hanging, industrial lightbulbs and a corrugated iron ceiling give the venue an edgy, on-trend look, while brown leather-padded stools and weathered wooden tables provide comfort and a laidback atmosphere. A mini-bottle of prosecco corte alta (20cl, £5.95) was enough to take the edge off, while Shauna indulged in a nostalgic Zymurgorium sweet violet gin liquer and Fever-Tree slimline tonic (50ml, £8.55) – reminiscent of sweet shop classic Palma Violet. And as though this had sent her on a trip down memory lane, she confided that she’d never been keen on the idea of tapas before, because it involves sharing – a concept that didn’t go down well in the every-man-for-

M

himself household she grew up in. However, with The Rioja Tapas Special (£27.95), there was no shortage of delicious food. Recommended for two, this comprised of mixed breads, butters and oils, patatas bravas and four dishes from the tapas menu. Warm and toasted sourdough and seeded loaves were accompanied by a sweet red wine and rapeseed oil, as well as a plain and smoky paprika flavoured butter. These were small touches which created a big impression. Made fresh in the kitchen, the infused oils and butters change regularly, so there’s always something new to try. The chef had also put his simple, yet effective touch on the Spanish staple, the patatas bravas. Golden brown and satisfyingly crisp, these tomato and garlic sauce-covered potatoes are roasted rather than fried, creating a dish so moreish, we were glad the portion was more than enough for two. Halloumi fries (£5.45) aren’t exactly traditional tapas, but have fast become a modern classic. These ones were evenly deepfried, yet still had a satisfying soft and squeaky centre, and were served with a tangy chipotle sauce. I was in awe of how fresh both the salmon and sesame seed skewers (£6.75), and the garlic-infused king prawns (£6.75) tasted, while Shauna was busy singing the praises of the rich and red-onion

roasted beef and blue cheese meatballs (£5.95). Suitably stuffed and with plenty of leftovers to feed a third person, Shauna and I shared a huge slab of caramel cake and vanilla ice cream (£3.65), along with an espresso (£2.40) for her and a latte (£2.40) for me – both from rich Arabica coffee beans, handcrafted and roasted by the Sheffield-based Forge Coffee Company. Though weekends are when this wine bar really shines, it left us thinking who needs Fridays when you’ve got Mondays at Rioja to brighten up your week? INTERVIEW

Aspiring to be the best LIFE IS SWEET FOR CHEF DE PARTIE JAI BROOK. FIND OUT HOW HIS PASSION FOR FOOD AND COOKING IS LEADING HIM INTO A TASTY CAREER IN FINE DINING. BY RACHEL MARTIN. What projects are you currently working on?

I’m currently studying towards a Level 4 in Professional Cookery at Doncaster College, which is a year-long degree course. This is my final year of study; I began working towards a level 1 VRQ Diploma in Introduction to Professional Cookery in 2014, and have progressed through the levels over the last four years.

On a Saturday, I prep – working on anything from starters to desserts – and on a Sunday I assist during service. It’s a really enjoyable place to work and the job can be really varied – there’s a new challenge waiting around every corner. The biggest compliment I get is when customers tell others about my food, and return to the restaurant again. It’s such a rewarding feeling knowing you’ve created something someone loves.

Where will you go from there?

I plan to travel the world and cook in as many different restaurants, and in as many different countries as possible, so I can gain vital experience and knowledge, which I one day hope to pass on other aspiring chefs. You’re a chef de partie at The Blacksmiths, Clayworth – what does the job involve?

I help out around the kitchen twice a week. 50 Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk

What is the best part of your job and the worst?

Working in a friendly team and being able to do what I love is what makes my job really enjoyable. It is very important to enjoy the kind of environment you are spending so much of your day in. I always knew I wanted to pursue this career but it still has a certain stigma around it. I am happy to say I am

working in a kitchen where people are very professional. The kitchen is an environment with healthy competition, and it can be quite stressful, thus it welcomes people who are self-driven and willing to constantly improve and develop. What do you want to accomplish as a chef in the future?

I’d actually like to teach cookery, which is why I want to travel the world and gain as much experience and knowledge as I can. I want to absorb as many different cultures as possible while growing my portfolio, so that one day I can pass that on to others. What advice would you give to other aspiring chefs?

If you are an aspiring chef, you should keep in mind it requires a lot of dedication and

INTERVIEW

commitment. You might not always have a lot of spare time, at least compared to some other professions. But ultimately, this is an incredibly rewarding job and long hours aren’t an issue when you really love what you do. To be successful in this role you also need to be organised and have good knowledge of food. It boils down to having a good attitude and being willing to commit. You should be ambitious and comfortable working under pressure. As you can imagine you will usually need to work with a team, thus, good communication skills are also key. It’s also important to work from the bottom up, so you experience every role first hand and learn as many new skills as possible. It’s not an easy trade, and you’re going to get chucked in the deep end, but it is worth it. What has been the highlight of your career so far? Jai with The Hairy Bikers...

...and with Jean Christoph Novelli

I worked in La Mignardise in Troyes, France, which is listed in the Michelin guide, Routard, Gault and Millau and Botin gourmand. The cuisine combines tradition and creativity, and there are a lot of other restaurants and pizzerias in the area, but for me, none compare – it’s one of a kind I was able to prep with a lot of local French ingredients and worked with foie gras, a luxury food product made of the liver of a duck or goose that has been specially fattened. The head chef took me with him to local markets to buy fresh produce and it was my job to unload the stock, which included fine wine and champagnes. I was also able to prep with the entire kitchen, which was an invaluable experience, as everyone was really helpful and knowledgeable. Who inspires you?

Jai at Doncaster Food Festival

With the staff at La Mignardise

The Hairy Bikers, who I recently got to prep for at the Delicious Doncaster Food and Drink Festival, which was nervewracking. On the back of this, I was also put forward to work with other worldrenowned chefs at the likes of the Good Food Show, which is exciting. I have also cooked with JeanChristophe Novelli, who is very different to the Hairy Bikers. He treats his demonstrations as more of a masterclass, and let me do all the cooking, while asking me questions about produce and techniques. He’s very involved and has invited me to work at his newest venture, Novelli at City Quays restaurant, which is part of the AC Hotel Belfast. It’s going to be an incredible experience to be able to work alongside him again. How do you unwind?

As you can imagine, I don’t have much of a social life, but I enjoy visiting local markets to seek out the best fresh produce. Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk 51

A world apart CHRIS WILSON ENJOYS LUNCH IN A SETTING STRAIGHT OUT OF TV-LAND. f location scouts were ever searching for the perfect English village to film an ‘oop north’ version of Midsomer Murders, they’d salivate over the gentle delights of Fishlake, which comes complete with a lovely church, gently rolling countryside and a cosy collection of affluentlooking homes with pristine gardens. It feels like the country hamlet that time forgot, perfect for snoozy summer days, and those grizzly killings that suddenly shatter the simple traditional pleasures of the village fete in telly land. It is also the perfect setting for a gorgeous, old-fashioned cafe with rustic decor, fresh local produce and a warm welcome for all comers. OK, so most places will welcome you with a cheerful hello. But when was the last time you booked for lunch and walked in to find a cheerful chalk board on your table, with your name and the word ‘Welcome’ in bright pink, and four hearts sketched in for good measure? Well, it was a new experience for me, and had me warming to The Old Butchers even before I’d had a chance to fully check out the menu and décor. You know what they say about first impressions... No prizes for guessing what The Old Butchers used to be. When it closed after 40 years, residents Louise McCormack and Claire Holling watched their former local shop fall into disrepair and decided to do something about it.

I

They’ve certainly come up with a winning formula, as The Old Butchers is bustling with life all day, from hearty breakfasts, midmorning coffee and cake, to lunches, light bites, soups, specials and sharing boards. They even throw in monthly bistro nights, but you’ll have to be quick off the mark... they sell out fast and there’s a waiting list. It’s easy to see why The Old Butchers has found such an enthusiastic audience. It’s a lovely, relaxed setting with squishy sofas in the front, perfect for a coffee and a read of the papers, and rugged wooden tables and soft chairs further back for diners. There’s an open kitchen and a small selection of Louise and Claire’s favourite delistyle foodstuffs to buy, such as sauces by Stokes of Suffolk, not a local brand but something the pair instantly fell for when they discovered it at a food fair. I do like the idea that, even when it comes down to the condiments to accompany a breakfast fry-up, they care enough to search beyond your standard brands to come up with something different. The breakfast menu does look perfect if you love a good fill-up but we arrived just after noon, and the lunch menu was equally appealing. I chose The Butchers Choice homemade venison burger (£6.95), which was very moist and packed with gamey flavour, and served on a toasted brioche with a blue cheese dressing, a small portion of first rate chips, coleslaw and chutney. It was a tasty

lunch, but with an emphasis on quality ingredients rather than massive portions, perfectly manageable for those of us for whom an afternoon snooze was not on the menu. My friend chose a lighter option, in the form of The Old Butchers salad bowl - a very attractive dish packed with colour and topped by a light wedge of quiche. Full of savoury goodness, it ticked all the boxes. There’s a fabulous array of homemade cakes on display and we shared a slice of something a little different - not too sweet, gorgeously moist and very moreish courgette and avocado cake (£2.50). So that was lunch in a lovely setting that seemed slightly apart from the real world and all the better for it. Definitely worth a butchers. Up to the challenge GOT UNUSUAL DIETARY REQUIREMENTS? ZARA’S HAS THE ANSWER, SAYS PHOEBE SEYMOUR. good way to put any restaurant to the test is to be that awkward customer with dietary requirements. I’d been to Zara’s in the peaceful village of Tickhill before, but since my last visit, I had gone veggie. Not so difficult to get around at an Indian restaurant, but then throw in an intolerance to tomatoes, and they really had their work cut out for them. However, not only did our waiter Abdul Mukith not look at me in absolute horror, he had a calm and collected facial expression which suggested he actually welcomed the challenge. In a heart-beat, he already had a dish in mind. I’d have the vegetable balti (£7.20) but swap the tomatoes for paneer – simple. But first things first, a crunchy stack of poppadoms (80p each) and a generous pickle tray (£2.40) are always a great way to get things started before a curry. Then it was on to starters. My sister had the fish pakora (£5.10), which was a rewarding break from her normal mixed kebab, while I was delighted to discover the vegetable mixed starter (£4.40), made up of a crisp samosa, a classic onion bhaji, vegetable pakora, and a lightly spiced alu chop – all lovingly drizzled

A

in the moreish raita from our pickle tray. Though the restaurant was packed with couples and families on this particular Friday evening, the pace was good and the service was seamless, with Abdul and other members of staff checking on us and topping up our drinks regularly. Then it was on to the aforementioned balti. Full of onions, broccoli, okra, carrots, potatoes and big cubes of paneer and bathed in aromatic mathi and balti spices, this was the furthest thing from a substitute dish. My sister was equally taken with her Zara’s special (£11.90), a tomato-based, medium-hot curry with tender pieces of chicken, although you can opt for lamb or king prawns if you prefer. Abdul had also recommended the flavourful spinach potatoes (£3.90) and the palate cleansing mushroom pilau rice (£3.40). And to top it off, Zara’s kulcha nan (£3.40) was beautifully decorated in green peppers, onions and garlic, and looked every bit as delicious as it tasted. Such a brilliant Indian feast deserved an authentic (and light) ending, so we shared a big jug of mango lassis (£7.50). This thick and fruity drink, poured over two tall glasses of ice, was the perfect way to cool us down

before our drive home Zara’s is the kind of authentic curry house you can peg as traditional, but that doesn’t mean they are strictly by the book when it comes to their menu. You’ll find all your good old favourites and some one-off specials too, but if you do have to go off-menu, don’t despair - they will be happy to accommodate you. Hannah Saxon BHF groups and volunteering manager in the area, said: “We would like to wish Bawtry and Doncaster Fundraising Group, a very happy birthday! We’re incredibly grateful to the group for supporting us over the past 30 years and are proud that they have raised over £700,000 - money so desperately needed for vital lifesaving heart research, which keeps hearts beating. “Heart and circulatory disease affects around seven million people in the UK, and thanks to Bawtry and Doncaster Fundraising Group we’ll be able to fund even more lifesaving research into these conditions.” Follow the Bawtry & Doncaster Fundraising Group on Facebook @doncaster.bhf or to find out more about BHF fundraising groups, visit www.bhf.org.uk/localfundraising.

of fantastic sandy beaches, traditional towns, hillsides and parks to explore. Is it any wonder that it has become a firm favourite with so many British holiday-makers? Visitors can wander through Palma’s gothic quarter and wonder at its cathedral. Laze on golden sandy beaches or delight in the Tramuntana Mountains. Luxuriate in charming manor houses or relax in a sophisticated boutique hotel. For romance or fun, action-packed or lazy days, there’s something to suit everyone in Mallorca. The Balearic Islands comprise of Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera, with Mallorca the largest, the most popular, and the best known of these delightful islands. Mallorca is often likened to a continent rather than simply an island due to its variety in culture, history and natural landscapes and it is not surprising that the sheer beauty of the island captivates everyone who visits it. No other European island boasts more contrasting terrain, from the fertile plains of the centre to the almost alpine peaks of the Tramuntana Mountains in the northwest and across to the gentle hills of the Levante to the east. The island’s 500km of coastline offers a

succession of lovely coves, beautiful sandy beaches and secluded bays with some extraordinary caves to explore: notably the Caves del Drac near Porto Cristo. And together with a mild climate and a rich cultural history, it really does provide a delightful holiday destination. The highest peak in visitors is within the summer months, but there is in fact plenty to see and do all year round. Although if you are looking for a beach holiday, May to October will be the best time to visit. Temperatures during the winter months are usually quite mild and remain in double figures. For those who are looking to explore Mallorca’s cultural and historic sights, the winter season is perfect as there are fewer tourists. The city of Palma is a popular choice for city and short breaks with such a great choice of shops, restaurants, museums and galleries. Mallorca has something to suit all tastes: from designer shopping in Palma to haggling for leather souvenirs at the Inca market, from water parks to theme parks, from sailing trips to cruises and exclusive restaurants to tapas bars and evening entertainment shows.

THINGS TO DO: Amaze’n Laberintos

Palma de Mallorca International Boat Show

The maze at Playa de Muro is one of the largest in Europe, stretching for nearly 1.4km on the beach beneath the pines. It’s a great idea for family things to do in Mallorca with its water dragons, monsters, witches, clowns and magicians lurking around hidden corners. There are baffling puzzles and riddles to help or hinder your progress. Open daily.

A floating exhibition displaying more than 300 boats ranging from 6m to 35m in length, the International Boat Show is hosted in the Moll Vell port area of Palma during the last few days of April and first few of days of May. The show focuses on recreational sailing and the best of sailing as a sport. Inca Market

A fascinating network of caverns, the Arta Caves, on Mallorca’s east coast at Cap Vermell, are nearly 50 metres above the sea. The cave chambers rejoice in names such as Hell, Purgatory and Paradise. The 22m tall stalagmite known as Queen of the Pillars is the highlight. Open daily it is a great attraction to visit when looking for things to do in Majorca.

Held on a Thursday, Inca’s weekly market is one of the best ways to get a feel for the real Mallorca. Although holidaymakers do visit in large numbers, the vast majority of customers are Mallorcans keen to track down a bargain as almost everything is sold there. The leatherwork is particularly good and high quality handbags, sandals and baskets are available. It is a great place for shopping and gifts.

Palma Aquarium

Old Town Alcudia

Exhibiting an exceptional variety of flora and fauna of the Mediterranean Sea, Palma Aquarium boasts a very large array of species, including fish from the Australian coral reef and sharks amongst the 55 different aquariums. The aquarium is another great attraction for adults and children alike when looking for alternative things to do in Mallorca, away from the beach. The aquarium is open daily.

Located in the north-eastern area of Mallorca is Alcudia’s old town. The town is surrounded by a moat and walls which were built over the 13th and 14th centuries by order of King Jaume II in order to protect its inhabitants. Now, the walls are an artistic historical site and are protected from further damage since part of the wall collapsed. Although the town has limited shops, there are cafés and restaurants serving traditional tapas and wine.

Arta Caves

There are also historical aspects about the town that are ready to be explored such as the roman theatre. A market runs on Tuesdays and Sundays 8.30am-1.30pm. Catamaran

Exploring Mallorca on land is fantastic, however, if you fancy something a bit different, why not explore the surrounding seas with a catamaran day trip, a great way to view Mallorca from another perspective. Offering a memorable experience with food, music and beverages, the charges are approximately 50 euros per person and 25 euros per child. Private hire is also available with prices varying between the different seasons. Cycle routes

The island has some spectacular cycle routes to please all sorts of abilities. Dramatically stunning views over cliff tops accompany your ride as you make your way to the most north easterly point of the island, Cap de Formentor. At the tip is the Formentor lighthouse, when you can take some refreshment and gaze over the stunning views which make the task of cycling up those winding roads well worth it.

The seal of approval QUALITY MARK AWARDED TO QUEEN ETHELBURGA’S. hapter House, the Early years, Infants and Juniors School at Queen Ethelburga’s Collegiate, has just been given a prestigious Primary Quality Mark Award for English and Mathematics by the national programme The Quality Mark. The Award is given in celebration of good practice and commitment to continuous improvement in these subjects, as the ‘bedrock of a good education’. Working with local authorities, schools, local communities and other organisations in using the Quality Mark process, the national body aims to develop, support and celebrate good practice in literacy, language and numeracy for children and young people. To achieve the Award, Chapter House underwent an assessment, against the 10 ‘Elements’ of the Quality Mark framework. provision of quality in both teaching and in resources; staff development; and active engagement with families. The award comes in swift succession to the school’s Silver Primary Science Quality Mark, earned in September 2017, which celebrates excellence in science teaching and learning, and enables schools to work together to share good practice. Karen Kilkenny, Head of Chapter House said of the achievement: “Our aim is to provide the most supportive, creative and fun learning environment for each pupil, so that their skills and knowledge can develop to reach their individual potential at each stage of their educational journey. “I’m very proud of the staff and pupils of Chapter House in achieving this Quality Mark. It is a reflection of the high standard of teaching and the delivery of inspiring lessons, as we work with our students to build a lifelong love of learning in every one of them.” To find out more about Chapter House and the wider QE community visit www.qe.org.

Mary Hawkins relaxes during her break at Ye Olde Bell

Congratulations to our Ye Olde Bell competition winner Mary Eastside recently collaborated with Ye Olde Bell Hotel & Spa to offer readers the chance to win a meal in the hotel’s St Leger Bistro and a one-night stay for two. And the lucky winner was Mary Hawkes from Doncaster. Mary, who took her husband along, was so delighted with her experience at Ye Olde Bell that she wrote an email, thanking all the staff. “I made the most of it, by turning the experience into a spa break,” she said. “I booked a massage for us both and it was glorious. I’d like to thank the spa therapists for the massage they are incredibly skilled. And the spa lunch was gorgeous. The waiter who took charge of us was very attentive, and I wish I knew his name, to thank him for looking after us so well! “When I arrived there I felt tired, but the next day I was completely rejuvenated. We made a weekend of it by visiting Idle Country Park, the next

day, which is about five minutes up the road and is free. It is possible to walk for miles and admire the water there. “My interest in the seventeenth century made the competition prize very special for me. The suite, and the whole building was appointed with antiques, recalling that Ye Olde Bell had operated as a coaching inn, since the seventeenth century. “The bed had velvet curtains and I could lie back and look at the seventeenth century decor, and imagine that I was back there. It was a dream break for a historical novelist, or for anyone who appreciates luxury. Ye Olde Bell was bound to be an inspiration.”
