ore and more people are affected by IHT every year. It used to be a tax that was the preserve of the very wealthy, but escalating property values in the last ten years have put paid to that. For single people, Inheritance Tax applies at the top rate of 40% to assets worth over £325,000. This threshold is known as the nil rate band. For married couples and civil partnerships the threshold is £650,000. But the higher £650,000 limit only applies when assets are passed between spouses and civil partners and this ﬁgure reduces if any money is passed onto any of your benefactors during your lifetime. There are also other ﬁnancial implications to consider, particularly if you are a widow, widower or divorcee.

And with the threshold remaining unchanged by the coalition government and subject to further legislation the

freeze will be extended up to and including the 2017/2018 tax year, more people could get sucked in as the minimum IHT threshold usually increases at a rate equivalent to at least inﬂation. aStone Therapy is a wonderfully relaxing Native American treatment based on the principles of geothermotherapy – alternating the application of heated and chilled stones – to the body. In the run up to the fourth Visit Bawtry Charity Polo Cup on Sunday 5 July at the Vale of York Polo Club in Misson, the question on everyone’s lips is – will anyone knock The Crown Hotel off the winner’s podium? Taking place on the first and third Saturday of each month 9am-4pm, it is going from strength to strength and continues to showcase a lovely range of fresh and homemade produce and gifts. The newly appointed market manager, local resident Kim Wattam, is assisting the Courtyard team in driving the market forward. Why not come along and help to support your local producers?

Election Fever gripped the UK in May – and Bawtry was no different. But it was the Bawtry Town Council election that took the spotlight and I was thrilled to be elected alongside fellow BRA members and Bawtry residents Steve Womack and Andy West. We are also striving to become the UK’s first dementia- and cancer-friendly town. All BRA members are invited to do simple online cancer training and awareness sessions, and the first dementia session at the Crown in May was conducted by dementia champion Liz Butcher. Keep a look out for further opportunities to become involved. Congratulations are also in order for some local businesses. Bawtry Shoe Company has just celebrated its 25th anniversary, Caviars’ current owners recently celebrated their third anniversary and raised £1,000 for Aurora at their annual fundraising dinner, Bawtry Eye Academy turns two on 6 June and China Rose will reach its 30th anniversary in July. I wish all readers a fantastic summer and I look forward to seeing you out and about in Bawtry. A great day A wonderful day of horse racing was finished off with a headline appearance by The Human League at Visit Bawtry’s annual meeting.

rowds of glamorous ladies and suited men flocked to the fourth annual Visit Bawtry Race Day at Doncaster Racecourse to witness a day packed full of horse racing. The event, organised by Bawtry Retail Association, was attended by nearly 12,000 people – proving that even the cold weather couldn’t dampen any spirits. Retailers in the town sponsored the entire race to promote their business and the town of Bawtry while supporting one of Doncaster’s greatest assets – the wonderful racecourse. The Crown Hotel, Portland Autos, Robinsons of Bawtry, China Rose, Fine and Country, Caviars Restaurant and 31 Market Place Cocktail Bar and Bistro all became a part 6 | www.visitbawtry.com

of the action as their sponsored races took place. Entertainment included a three-piece jazz band that created a wonderful atmosphere and played outside of the Champagne Bar and the legendary Sheffield band, Human League played after the racing finished. Rebecca Dickenson, Chair Bawtry Retail Association, said: “Doncaster Racecourse is a great platform to promote the work that we do and the diverse range of businesses, restaurants and retail that we have in Bawtry. “It was lovely to welcome some regular faces as well as some new sponsors – Portland of Bawtry and 31 Market Place Cocktail Bar and Bistro – all of whom were fantastic and great ambassadors for Visit Bawtry.”

Bawtry businesses have teamed up with Yorkshire Wildlife Park – and are reaping the rewards.

awtry is packed to the rafters with savvy business owners who know how to draw in the crowds from far and wide. It is this momentum that has led to the Bawtry Retail Association becoming such a successful operation, and helped to put Bawtry on the map. It will come as no surprise, then, that some of these business owners have also teamed up with another local attraction – the Yorkshire Wildlife Park (YWP) and its Safari Village, a free-to-enter retail arm which opened last April. The Crown Hotel, Etc and Limited 2 Art now have strong connections with the park, and are enjoying the many benefits this brings. “The whole point of the Safari Village is to create a destination that is unique,” says YWP director Cheryl Williams. “In addition to our own shop and Safari Café, the other independent retailers we have on board are not the standard brands that you can find in any shopping centre, but handpicked businesses that really appeal to our customers.” Etc’s beautiful gifts, jewellery and homeware by well-loved brands such as Pilgrim, Emma Bridgewater and DCUK – as well as other exclusive collections – fit right in with this ethos. At the Limited 2 Art gallery, customers can

browse and buy original artworks, limited editions and sculptures from a range of both local and national exhibiting artists. “Putting our business in front of half a million visitors to the park each year was too good an opportunity to miss,” says gallery owner Ruth Worsman. “What the directors are trying to achieve at the park is commendable; they promote local businesses and suppliers and help to create wealth within the community. We’ve built a good symbiotic relationship with them and it’s even driven new customers to our Bawtry gallery.” The YWP’s partnership with The Crown Hotel in Bawtry has also opened up new opportunities for both businesses. Cheryl says: “We were getting approached by people who wanted to have their wedding photographs taken with the animals but we couldn’t complete the package as holding the evening reception here would have been very tricky during high season. Now, thanks to the Crown, people can come here, enjoy a unique experience, and then go to the hotel for their reception and accommodation. It works really well for both of us.”

Tiffany Fashion Show

Tiffany of Doncaster recently held a fashion show at Hill House School, in partnership with menswear retailers Moss Bros and Bradley Knipe, and children’s clothes shop Cheeky Monkeys. The Show – organised by the friends of Hill House – was a great success and all money raised will go to the school. Tiffany showcased the latest summer 2015 collections from casual brands including Marc Cain, Oui, Joseph Ribkoff, Sandwich and Elisa Cavaletti, and a stunning selection of outfits and dresses perfect for weddings, the races, summer balls and proms. Teachers and students strutted their stuff on the catwalk and pupils also modelled their own creations. The evening was topped off with appearances from headmaster Mr Holland and head of the junior school, Mr Hall.

‘Best experience of my life’ The most hotly anticipated wedding of 2015 has taken place at The Crown Hotel – we caught up with Hallam FM’s Win Your Wedding bride Angela Pilkington-Thorp to hear all about the magical day…

met Brian three years ago and we got engaged at New Year in Las Vegas. We always said that we didn’t want a really long engagement so, when we heard about the Hallam FM Win Your Wedding competition, we thought we’d give it a go. It also gave us the opportunity to raise money for a really good cause. We were absolutely over the moon when we found out we’d won but it took a while to sink in. We were in shock and just so relieved that it was all over because the fundraising fortnight was really, really hard work. But then we started to get really excited about what was to come. In all the excitement, we realised we had just four weeks to plan the wedding. It was chaos and we were running from one

place to another to get everything sorted. We had to make instant decisions and didn’t have time to change our minds about anything. The service we received from the Crown was truly out of this world – from planning the wedding to helping us on the day to looking after us once it was all over, they were absolutely brilliant. I kept thinking that it was such short notice and panicking that everything wouldn’t be ready in time but if I made a request, it was done. We couldn’t have asked for anything better. We had both the ceremony and the reception at the hotel and the rooms were just beautiful. White Rose Occasions dressed the rooms perfectly, with sparkle back drops and lovely chair covers. We

chose a very fresh, clean and traditional look for our wedding theme – lots of white roses and lace, and silvery-charcoal dresses for my bridesmaids. My favourite moment was just after the ceremony, when we turned around together as a married couple and walked out to Viva Las Vegas while our guests pulled silver party poppers. It was amazing! I then nipped outside to have some photographs taken in front of a fire engine (I’m a fire fighter) while everyone enjoyed hibiscus fizz and canapés before the meal. All of our guests – 68 for the day and 120 for the evening reception – commented on how wonderful the food was. For the wedding breakfast, we had an absolutely phenomenal five-course meal, including coffee, and everyone was absolutely stuffed. But when they brought out the pie, peas and chips later in the evening, no-one could resist! We stayed in the 501 suite, which has the biggest shower I have ever seen – there are two big shower heads in there, about a metre apart from each other, which are

If we hadn’t entered the competition and had gone to a wedding at the Crown, I would definitely have chosen the hotel as our venue. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff – everything ran so smoothly and the food was just incredible. It was a wonderful day and they made it the best experience of my life.

The Old Weighing Room certainly lives up to its reputation, writes Stephanie Burns.

had heard many rave reviews about The Old Weighing Room since its £125,000 refurbishment. And though I admit I was a little surprised by the gushing comments, given the restaurant’s track-side location, my recent visit taught me not to judge somewhere before going myself. It was on a blustery Thursday evening that my partner and I arrived a little early for our 7pm booking at the restaurant, still unsure what to expect. We needn’t have worried. An exceptionally warm welcome greeted us and, as we were soon to find out, the food matched the impeccable service. While we enjoyed a pre-dinner drink in the bar, we took the chance to take in our slick and glamorous surroundings. The black, grey and white colour scheme, spiked with hints of chrome and flashes of turquoise and purple, is given an even greater sense of occasion by the spectacular glassdomed ceiling. It made a great first impression. After a hard day’s work we’d built up quite an appetite and, as we were seated in the main restaurant, our eyes lit up at the sight of two freshly baked mini loaves, with plenty of butter to accompany them. We gladly tucked in while waiting the few minutes for our starters to arrive. My artfully presented dish had robust, pink wood pigeon balanced on a gently warmed salad of carrot, celeriac and

courgette ribbons. Dowsed in a cranberry jus, it was a wonderful way to begin proceedings. Across the table, my partner was spreading thick layers of deliciously rich brown crab butter on tomato and chilli breadsticks – a strong base for the more delicate flavours of potted white crab and tangy lime jelly. The positivity continued for our main courses – and included the star of the show. The freshest pea and mint risotto I’d ever tasted provided a fantastic accompaniment to my breaded lamb’s belly. Topped with parmesan and peashoots, it was a beautiful dish that I would happily order again. My partner’s surf ‘n’ turf, with fillet steak and breaded monkfish, was equally well received and he had to slap away my hand on more than one occasion to protect his crispy tripled-cooked chips. Fantastic puds, one of which came with a gorgeous strawberry daiquiri cocktail, finished the meal off in style. During the course of the evening, someone rang to book a table for afternoon tea in July. Not only did this reflect the restaurant’s popularity – only the best restaurants get bookings weeks in advance – but it also gave us inspiration for our next visit.Yes, I can certainly imagine sipping champagne and nibbling scones on that track-side terrace come summertime.

Favourites with a twist Fiona Barber cosies up to some familiar dishes given a modern makeover.

he beautiful backdrop of Clumber Park is enough to persuade anyone to stay at Clumber Park Hotel and Spa. But if the scenery doesn’t get you the hotel’s innovative menu surely will. Food at the hotel is served in two restaurants run by head chef Allan Barrett. The Normanton Inn offers a relaxed, family friendly, informal atmosphere and is open daily from 10am and the Courtyard Restaurant opens on Friday and Saturday evenings for a more intimate experience. Private dining is also available. On this occasion we were dining at the Normanton Inn. With canvases showcasing the beauty of Clumber Park and a typical country-style moose’s head protruding from the wall, there’s a true cosiness here that makes for an ideal relaxed dinner. As well as the standard menu, a blackboard offers tantalising daily specials, one of which – the ham hock served with pineapple chutney – instantly caught my eye. Two crisped meaty fritters arrived with a perfectly cooked just-soft-in-the-middle egg and were offset wonderfully by the sweetness of the chutney. My partner opted for the pan-fried pigeon, black pudding, crispy pancetta, pickled mushrooms, curly endive and rocket salad; a beautiful combination of flavours and textures. Our mains – a roasted duck breast with carrot and star anise puree, potato fondant, wilted greens, and a ginger and sesame marinated pork cutlet with braised rice and lemon crème fraîche – were both deliciously

tender and created an infusion of aromatic flavours with every mouthful. For desserts, it was a classic case of saving the best until last; the banoffee pie totally stole the show. With lashings of toffee sauce, precisely piped cream and clotted cream ice cream, it was everything you could ever want from such an indulgence. My partner – a lover of ‘proper’ puds, and anything that comes with custard – couldn’t resist the Baileys croissant bread and butter pudding. Served with traditional custard, this dish summed up exactly what Clumber Park Hotel and Spa does best – traditional food with a modern twist.

very time my boyfriend and I go for a curry, we are predictably safe. We always have chicken korma and chicken tikka masala, much to the ridicule of our friends. However, I am much more openminded tonight. As soon as we enter Zara’s, we are welcomed by manager Faruk Miah with a greeting as warm as the gold and yellow décor. Our attentive waiter, Abdul, shows us to our table and takes our drinks order. Whilst consulting the menu, we start with some light and crispy poppadoms. After I order a mixed kebab and my boyfriend orders a samosa, Abdul is happy to help with the mains. Based on the fact I like medium hot, chicken curries, he suggests the Zara’s special. I assume my dining partner won’t budge on the korma, but hurrah! Abdul manages to sway him toward the chicken makoni, a similar curry with a tomato twist. We then order the tarka dall with garlic, pilau rice and garlic naan. No vampires coming near us tonight. The room is filling up well for a Thursday night. I find Faruk talking to the regulars sat at the table to my right. In the 12 years it has been here, Zara’s has built up a loyal clientele. “About 70 per cent of our customers are regulars,” says Faruk. It’s also great to hear that the chefs pride themselves on making everything from scratch with fresh ingredients.

It isn’t long before we are tucking into a mixed kebab made up of a crispy onion bhaji, kebab meat and pieces of grilled-toperfection chicken. The samosa is surprisingly spicy, but works well with the cool side salad. The mains’ presentation is as impressive as the seductive aroma. The Zara’s special is in a balti-like, tomato sauce topped with diced coriander and red onions, as is the tarka dall. I’m glad they don’t hold back on the garlic in the buttery dall and even the pilau rice has a nice aroma, as it’s topped with a clove of aniseed. The chicken makoni is sweet, yet creamier than a korma, which is good, but I imagine it would be overwhelming on its own. The strong taste of the garlic nan breaks this up nicely. Both main courses rate highly, but we particularly like the Zara’s special with its balance of flavours and juicy chunks of chicken. I don’t usually do desserts at curry houses, but the coconut supreme ice cream with its real pieces of coconut is not something you come across often. My boyfriend cleans his palate with the orange sorbet which is zingy and made with real orange juice. The food and customer service tonight have been outstanding and I can see why many locals are regulars at this curry house. I’m not saying, “So long” to my usual tikka masala, but I am happy to try something new the next time I visit.
