Natural inspiration CREATE A GORGEOUS GARDEN THIS SUMMER. ow that we have had a glimpse of summer, thoughts will doubtlessly turn to the great outdoors and how we can create gorgeous gardens. Which is why leading housebuilder Miller Homes has enlisted the help of RHS Chelsea award-winning Yorkshire gardener Graham Bodle, who is based at Walkers Nurseries, near Doncaster. “We wanted to inspire our homeowners with ideas to transform their blank canvases,” said Natalie Moore, sales manager at Miller Homes Yorkshire. “Graham was kind enough to share some amazing ideas and here are just a few to provide some horticultural inspiration.”
N
Graham Bodle suggests:
“Perhaps the best way to make an impact in a more modest sized garden is go big and go bold. Filling a smaller garden with small plants and pots generally doesn’t work - it’s about making a statement and making an impact. “One way to achieve this is to buy big pots for patios and fill them with statement plants. Adopting a theme, such as Mediterranean, can give direction to the overall scheme - the big pot/big plant combination could be something like an olive tree. “Carry this theme into borders and choose well established plants that make an impact as soon as 14 Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk
they are planted, such as those with striking foliage or blooms. Remember though that plants grow, and over the summer often quickly, so leave them enough room to breathe and flourish. “Consider architectural design too. Perhaps you could design a seating area if the sun falls in a certain place in the late summer evening, or a water feature in a corner where there isn’t much sun. They can create depth and interest when you are sat enjoying your outdoor space. “Growing your own continues to be hugely popular and whilst a veg patch
works perfectly, how about interspersing vegetable and fruit plants in with your shrub and floral border. Strawberries and potatoes are great grown in pots or raised beds, but there are endless things you could grow with ease and pride amongst your plants such as onions, peppers and a whole host of herbs. “Having a blank canvas is always very exciting and new homeowners should view their space as an ongoing creation. A garden is never really finished there are always things that we can enjoy to ensure our plants thrive, and we create a space where we can relax, entertain and play. No matter the size of your garden or your gardening ability, a truly wonderful space can be easily created with just a little planning.” Article written by Miller Homes: www.millerhomes.co.uk Walkers Nurseries Mosham Road, Blaxton, Doncaster, DN9 3BA Tel: 01302 770325 www.walkersnurseries.tv

During Joseph Paxton’s time as head gardener the Chatsworth Estate boasted one of the most extensive orchid collections in the UK, and at this year’s show celebrity floral designer, Jonathan Moseley will join forces with Double H Nurseries to bring one of the UK’s largest orchid displays back to the estate. Housed within a bespoke representation of Joseph Paxton’s Great Conservatory, the display will feature over 100 varieties of the popular Phalaenopsis Orchid, creating an immersive floral extravaganza. The exotic blooms, in a sumptuous palette of lilacs, whites, purple, pale and cerise pink will adorn a central waterfall, and suspended from the ceiling will be a riot of sculptural branches, with large chandeliers dripping with mosses and tropical bromeliads from which will hang a further explosion of vibrant orchids. A Virtual Reality experience created by 3D expert and VR designer, Simon Mabey alongside Manchester Museum and Manchester University will immerse visitors further in the tropical display as they sit suspended amongst the flowers, experiencing the wonder of different orchids through the eyes of an insect. MosEley will also be at all the RHS shows with his British Flower Bus, where spectators can climb on board, see gorgeous British blooms and join him for demonstrations and free arrangement workshops using local grown flowers.
S
And for the first time at an RHS Show, a mass planting of over 12,000 Cosmos will create a striking vision of pink in front of the iconic Chatsworth House, for visitors to walk amongst and enjoy the sweet scent and beauty of this elegant summer flower. The important role plants play within cities will also be explored in the new Living Laboratory, showcasing some of the great ways plants can help both now and in the future as urban living intensifies. Plants and technology will be on display highlighting how different varieties can help address a number of urban challenges including pollution, flooding and food scarcity. Other show highlights include show gardens inspired by local landscapes, including The Great Outdoors Garden by Sheffield based designer Phil Hirst and a celebration of Hay Time in Yorkshire by Chris Myers. Continuing the agricultural theme, The John Deere Garden by Elspeth Stockwell and Jo Fairfax takes inspiration from farm buildings, ploughed wheat fields and natural woodland borders and will feature a circular sculpture of 100 tractors, celebrating the company’s centenary year of tractors. The history of Chatsworth House provides inspiration for some of the new innovative installations at this year’s show, and show partner, Wedgwood are working
with Chatsworth’s head of gardens and landscape Steve Porter and craftsman Carl Hardman of Landmark Walling to celebrate the ancient heritage craft of dry stone walling, an important feature in the British landscape. A ‘lost’ village that once stood in the shadow of Chatsworth House before being removed to make way for Capability Brown’s famous landscape is the inspiration behind Brewin Dolphin’s installation designed by multi award winning designer, Paul Hervey-Brookes. Liz Patterson, RHS Chatsworth Flower Show manager says: “We’ve been going all out in the Chatsworth team preparing some fabulous new experiences for the 2018 show. “On top of the exciting new content, the floral marquees will be bursting with top growers and nurseries and we have a fantastic line up of experts in the garden and artisan kitchen theatres hosting Q&A sessions, talks and demos throughout the week. “Visitors will also be able to get creative in the artisan craft area and we will see the return of the popular well dressing competition, plus lots more.”

Get slimmer for summer ELEMENTS MEDISPA AND THE SKINNY SHOT PROGRAMME CAN HELP YOU LOSE WEIGHT – AND KEEP IT OFF. re you ready to lose weight and feel great this summer? Are diet and exercise not enough to get you past a weight loss plateau? More often than not, our desire to lose weight before an upcoming holiday becomes a last-minute sprint to the finish line, and exercise alone is not enough. If you'd like to drop a few pounds before you hit the beach on your next getaway, the Skinny Shot Programme is available exclusively at Elements MediSpa, and offers a combination of FDA approved and UK licensed prescription medication, alongside personal training sessions, dietary and nutritional advice and a total-body exercise plan, to help you reach and maintain your weight-loss goals. Together with a healthy, calorie-controlled diet, Liraglutide (also known as Saxenda®) offers effective and reliable weight loss by controlling appetite, curbing hunger and reducing cravings for sweet and fatty foods. Saxenda® is an FDA-approved prescription injectable medicine that is different from weight management products you may have taken in the past. It works like an appetite-regulating hormone, known as
A
glucagon-like-peptide (GLP-1), that the body produces naturally. By activating areas of your brain that regulate appetite, Saxenda® makes you feel less hungry, which can lead to lower calorie intake and can help you to not only lose weight, but keep it off. Elements launched this revolutionary treatment at their recent Anti-Ageing Open Day, with a presentation from owner Sandy Green and personal trainer, Richard Buckley, who works across all the council owned gyms in Doncaster and believes that by combining Saxenda® with personal training sessions, recipients will change the way they think about food and exercise – so the results last. It’s very important to visit an experienced weight loss professional who will design a programme and prescribe the appropriate medication for you. Such professionals are available at Elements MediSpa, who are registered with the Care Quality Commission to offer services in slimming clinics. Call now to book your FREE consultation and achieve weight loss success you never thought was possible, or attend the open evening on Wednesday 20th June to find out more.

ince its humble beginnings in 2011, Bawtry Retail Association (BRA) continues to go from strength-tostrength and has since grown to over 80 members, a chairperson, a vice chair and subcommittees, who work together to not only promote Bawtry to the local and wider community, but to encourage support of local businesses and inspire the utilisation of a wider range of shopping and nightlife. In February, BRA also became a member of Welcome to Yorkshire, which provides, among other benefits, a link to one of the UK’s leading tourism websites. But it isn’t all change; BRA remains a notfor-profit organisation which has the interest of its members and the town at its heart, and continues to work closely with Bawtry Town Council and Bawtry Residents Group to raise the reputation of Bawtry as a prestigious destination town. For more information, visit www.visitbawtry.com and let’s keep working together for the good of our community. It’s been an exciting few months here in Bawtry and some of the highlights include Royal Wedding celebrations, the Tour de Yorkshire passing through neighbouring
www.visitbawtry.com Auckley and Doncaster, and the hottest Visit Bawtry Race Meeting, where racegoers enjoyed not only the fabulous weather, but an evening full of racing action. Looking ahead, 1 July will herald the return of the Visit Bawtry Charity Polo Cup, which will have a slightly different format to previous years, welcoming Yorkshire Polo Club teams King William and White Rose and St Albans’ Stag Polo Club. Charles Hanson will also be conducting a charity antiques and collectables valuation day at St Nicholas’ Church on 16 July to help raise money for two extremely worthy causes. With examination season in full swing, BRA would like to take this opportunity to wish students every success with their results, and as the 2018 FIFA World Cup is just around the corner, a reminder that Bawtry will be a hub for sports fans throughout June and July.

“The idea of selling a house would normally fill me with dread. I’ve never really had a good experience and always viewed it as something that you just have to put up with. This year, that perception has changed. From the start of the process with Open Door, I felt confident that Shaun and his team were going to work very hard to initially market my property with a view to sell. Within hours, the property was on the market with a realistic asking price. Soon after, Shaun was filling his diary with viewings and made sure that buyers were visiting the property within a quick timeframe. This resulted in a sale at a price that I was extremely happy with. Overall, I received an exceptional service from Shaun and the team at Open Door.” James W from Doncaster “When I decided to sell my house, I contacted Open Door and was visited at a time to suit me by Shaun who explained everything about the company's service. Shaun then left his contact details, giving me time to think about things. I contacted Shaun again and he returned to see me and take photos of my house himself so that it could be advertised. This was on a Monday. On the Thursday (three days later), Shaun brought two prospective buyers to view my home. He then negotiated a very good sale price for me with the buyers and my house was sold - amazingly, within three days of being advertised. I jokingly said to Shaun that he was like a little terrier who does not let go until he has secured the deal! To summarise, Shaun from Open Door did a fantastic job; he was very professional; and he kept me updated throughout. He dealt with absolutely everything - all I had to do was sit back and let Shaun do his work, which he did to an extremely high standard. If anyone out there is considering using Open Door to sell their home, my advice would be: ‘go ahead, you will not regret it.” Sandra F from Dunscroft

Facebook Reviews Emma Tough Jones - 5* Just returned from an absolutely amazing time at Lapland booked through Bliss. The whole booking process was so easy and they made notes over the fact it was a surprise 40th present for my husband (which enabled us to get extra leg room on the flight!) The trip itself was absolutely amazing and something we would never have thought to do had Bliss not advertised it on Facebook. I would recommend anyone to book a trip with Bliss! I will certainly be doing it again! Thank you so much xxxxx Samantha Donnelly – 5* I’ve not been to a travel agents in a long time as I always thought the best deals were online... but booking with Rebecca today was amazing and so easy, she has found us a fantastic holiday/hotel, and cheaper than what I was looking at online. Amazing service will definitely be using again... thank you... Cuba here we come xxx

While away an afternoon
WHATEVER THE WEATHER, LONG, LEISURELY LUNCHES ARE THE ORDER OF THE DAY AT FEAST, BAWTRY, WRITES HANNAH SANDERS. his year’s Tour de Yorkshire may be well be over, but it didn’t stop the celebrations continuing as a peloton of local riders pulled in at the recently refurbished Feast for a spot of well-earned lunch. Although we hadn’t spent the morning pushing the pedals, the sunshine had us in desperate need of rest and refreshments, so we found a spot of shade and began to peruse the menu. Never mind the wave of Lycra perched out front, it wouldn’t take much to spot the café thanks to a clever mix of exposed wood, slate grey and orange which transitions throughout offering diners a relaxed and contemporary atmosphere ideal for a spot of lunch and a catch up with friends. As a devoted coffee drinker I was delighted to see an extensive menu, and after much deliberation settled for a flat white (£2.85) with almond milk, whilst my companion opted for a refreshing Breckland Orchard cloudy lemonade (£2.85). The Mexican bagel (£6.95) was lightly toasted, packed full of classic fillings and

served with creamy coleslaw. The Cajun spiced chicken was succulent, with just the right amount of heat and a perfect contrast to the crispy bacon, chunky guacamole, fresh tomatoes and mixed leaf salad. Wanting something a little lighter, my companion went for the Feast classic ranch (£8.95) – one of the newly launched bowl salads. Made with garden-fresh ingredients including baby leaf spinach and watercress, baby corn along with a boiled egg and grilled halloumi, finished with a sprinkling of toasted pine nuts and pumpkin seeds, the dish was a perfect balance of seasonal flavours. And, because you can never have too much avocado we decided to share the ‘avo good day’ loaded wedges (£7.95), which came piled high with crushed avocado, sweet sunblushed tomatoes and a generous helping of balsamic onions. After a brief respite, we couldn’t say no to the delicious homemade cakes that had been calling to us since we arrived. The chocolate brownie (£2.90) had a crumbly outer shell and inside was delightfully gooey, whilst the Victoria sponge (£3.25) was light and airy,
sandwiched together with an even layer of jam and rich buttercream finished with a macaroon, which was crisp on the outside and wonderfully chewy in the middle. With the sun shining down on us, blue skies above, blossom trees in front and the hustle and bustle of the market town of Bawtry, Feast made for the perfect location to enjoy a relaxing lunch. It’s back!
Top quality polo cup returns to support local charities.
S
unday 1 July will herald the return of a popular event in the local calendar – the Visit Bawtry Charity Polo Cup Family Day brought to you by event organisers Bawtry Retail Association. After taking a sabbatical last year, the event, which has raised thousands of pounds for local charities, will be held at the Robin Hood Polo Club at Misson and will have a slightly different format to previous years. It will welcome visiting clubs including Yorkshire Polo Club teams King William and White Rose, Stag Polo Club from St Albans, as well as the home Visit Bawtry team. “The emphasis of this year’s event is topquality polo and a great family atmosphere with spectators encouraged to bring their own picnics and enter their table into the Best Dressed Picnic Table competition,” said Ross Jarvie, Chair Bawtry Retail Association. “Polo is 16 | www.visitbawtry.com

Happy and hearty AFTER DOUBLING IN SIZE, THERE’S NOW EVEN MORE ROOM TO ENJOY THE BEST BREAKFASTS, SANDWICHES AND SHAKES WITH FRIENDS AND FAMILY AT FEAST, BAWTRY. east, in the bustling market town of Bawtry, has been a familiar sight to locals for almost 12 years, although these days it’s looking a little different after its exciting expansion and renovation. The popular cafe reopened late last year and, thanks to the clever mix of exposed wood, slate grey and orange colour theme, it doesn’t take much to spot to a passer-by. Feast not only has a skilled and welcoming team of chefs and front of house staff, but offers diners the perfect relaxing atmosphere to enjoy a spot of lunch and catch up with friends. And, with a strong emphasis on familyfriendly, they have a vast selection of games and jigsaws on hand to keep the little ones (and older) entertained while waiting for the food to arrive. Now nearly double in size, the café has kitted out the interior with wooden tables, orange and grey chairs along with a feature bar boasting delicious homemade cakes, sandwiches and pies. Feast still maintains its values of seasonal freshly made food using local produce, and now has an extensive drinks, breakfast and brunch menu as well as a popular children’s menu.

steak covered in Yorkshire blue cheese, bourbon glazed pulled pork, oak smoked salmon or pastrami you’ll be spoilt for choice. And, if you’re wanting to indulge, try the loaded wedges and choose from either pulled pork, Cajun chicken or ‘Avo good day’. The newly launched bowl salads are a fantastic option if you want something a little lighter. You’ll need plenty of room for breakfast
“Whether you like a traditional Yorkshire brew or want to indulge in a flat white with a homemade cake or deliciously gooey brownie – there’s an option to suit each individual.”
Previously known for their take-out sandwiches, Feast have launched their grab and go range. Each morning the staff prepare and package a selection of delicious sandwiches, so even if you have a busy day at the office, you can still treat yourself to some well-deserved lunch from the deli fridge. And, if you are wanting to grab a sandwich after work to tide you over, Feast reduce everything left in their deli fridge by 50 per cent after 3pm, so they can make them all fresh again the next morning. However, if nothing takes your fancy from the fridge, worry not as you can order their famous club sandwiches and hearty bagels to take out – all made fresh while you wait. Feast can cater to many dietary requirements, simply ask the friendly team and they’ll be more than happy to adjust your meal to suit you. Not forgetting the most important part of a lunch – cakes and coffee. Whether you like a traditional Yorkshire brew or want to indulge in a flat white with a homemade cake or deliciously gooey brownie – there’s an option to suit each individual. Feast also have combined the best of both worlds, making a moreish chocolate brownie milkshake; a delectable mix of Thaymars chocolate and vanilla ice cream and homemade brownie. For those who prefer something cold to
refresh and hydrate, choose from their selection of Starkey’s juice, Frobisher’s juice or Breckland Orchard posh pops. And, if you are wanting to fit in your five a day try either the mean green or berry nice smoothie. If you want to take the Feast experience home with you, they stock a selection of products used to create their delicious dishes, all carefully sourced from artisan suppliers within the region including; Rosebud Preserves, Welbeck Bread, Yockenthwaite Farms Granola and Starkey’s apple juices. Open seven days a week, Feast is the ideal place in Bawtry to either grab a delicious take-away sandwich or enjoy a relaxing lunch with friends and family. L-R: Jon Gouldon Chairman and Andrew Whittaker Managing Director of Yorkshire Caravans of Bawtry
NEW MANAGING DIRECTOR ADDS NEW DIMENSION TO LEADING YORKSHIRE BUSINESS A managing director has been appointed at Yorkshire Caravans of Bawtry, the oldest and largest independent retailer of caravans, awnings and outdoor leisure accessories in the UK. Andrew Whittaker, from Doncaster, joined the company five years ago and has become a very popular and highly respected member of the team. At his recent appraisal, he was rewarded for his commitment to the company with the offer of managing director, a role he was delighted to accept. It is the first time in the company’s 87-year history that the role will be held by a nonfamily member since Jon Goulden became chairman in 2016. “Andrew has really proven himself, particularly since taking over the position of general manager two years ago, and as the business continued to expand, it became clear that he was the ideal person to take over the role and in effect, become my deputy,” said Jon Goulden, chairman of Yorkshire Caravans. “I will be retaining overall responsibility for the business and will continue to oversee the day to day strategic side of the company with the help of my management team. “Whilst Andrew may not be strictly family, he is certainly part of the Yorkshire Caravans family and we know that he will continue to embrace the ethos of the business and the growth plans that we have.” During his time at the Doncaster site, Andrew has shown great passion and dedication to the business and as well as forming new relationships with industry leading companies he has developed the online sales side of the operation which has ensured the overall growth of the business positioning it as one of the premium caravan retailers in the north of England. 30 | www.visitbawtry.com
Working together with Chris Brown, who has recently joined the team as financial controller, and operations manager, Pete Simpson, who with his immense product knowledge and expertise, ensures greater depth and resilience to the management team. Andrew commented: “This was a fantastic surprise and I am very excited about my new position. The company has already undergone major investment over the last 24 months and I shall look forward to developing the role and the business further and to working closely with Jon to develop the future strategy and its implementation.” Yorkshire Caravans remain committed to delivering the highest levels of customer service and this latest promotion will only serve to reinforce this vision. Knowledgeable, trained staff assist in a professional manner and with the best quality products on offer customers continue to be highly complimentary. A personalised dedicated handover bay and secure storage with CaSSOA (Caravans Storage Site Owners Association) Gold Award – which is the highest accreditation given by CaSSOA – along with a fantastic in-house outdoor leisure shop, awnings showroom, parts and aftersales departments, all contributes to an outstanding customer experience of which the team is very proud. Yorkshire Caravans is proud to be a member of Bawtry Retail Association and to be participating in local and nationwide charity and community events. It makes a difference.” And it works – the estate agent is selling houses in the Bawtry area in less than six weeks. Heart-felt fundraiser for Leeds hospital The Little Hearts Ball was held at Keepmoat Stadium to raise funds for the Children’s Heart Surgery Fund at Leeds General Infirmary. Casey O’Neil and Zack McCormack’s son, Freddie, was born with a very complex and severe heart condition. Having gone through multiple heart surgeries and in need of more in future, they decided to host a ball to raise funds for the ward that is helping their son and many other children defy the odds. Many businesses kindly helped out by sponsoring tables, giving raffle and auction prizes, and the whole evening was a roaring success.

Japan has lured untold number of adventurers since Marco Polo first introduced it to the world back in the 13th century as “Zipangu – the Land of Gold”. The Seasons
No other country has the contrasting seasons that Japan enjoys. Spring is spectacular. From the first days of February when the plum blossoms debut in Okinawa, to the end of May, when the last cherry blossoms fall from the trees of northern Japan, spring is a time of celebration with numerous flower festivals being held everywhere. Spring is one of the most popular times to travel and booking early is imperative. Summer is a season of rice planting and total greenery and for visiting Mount Fuji, enjoying the fireworks almost every night and the large scale festivals that will linger through into September, but by October Japan is enjoying the crisp, cooler days of its autumn, bringing swirls of changing leaves, vivid hues of crimson, gold, bronze and yellow that paint the hills and mountainsides in carpets of colour, a wonderful time to visit. To the Manor drawn HANNAH SANDERS FALLS FOR THE CHARMS OF A LOVINGLY RESTORED INN. estled in the idyllic village of Old Denaby, The Manor is a true hidden gem, which perfectly ties together a rustic and contemporary feel making it a splendid modern dining experience. Arriving on a gloriously sunny Friday evening, we were greeted by stunning countryside views, blue skies and bright pink blossom trees, made more serene by the faint chirping of birds and we were looking forward to relaxing with a refreshing drink while watching the world go by. Recently refurbished and under new ownership, The Manor has been lovingly and painstakingly restored. The heart of the building has been transformed and now boasts exposed wooden beams, original cast iron fireplaces along with bespoke slate and granite bars, oak tables and plush purple and grey velvet chairs. The menu heavily focuses on seasonal ingredients, and the tiger king prawns (£6.95) marinated in sesame, soy and chilli served with an Asian style salad and a sweet mango, papaya and lime chutney were bursting with freshness, perfectly

complementing the delicate undertones of peach, pear, apricot and apple in the la Marca Prosecco (£7.95). The marinated crispy duck pancakes (£6.45) came with a sweet chili, plum and hoisin sauce, piled high with spring onions and cucumber. The 14oz BBQ pork Tomahawk (£17.95) was a meat lover’s dream and came cooked to medium perfection, balanced on top of a stack of thick-cut, twice-cooked chips served with giant onion rings, confit tomato and a grilled mushroom with a trio of sauces – Yorkshire blue cheese, pink peppercorn and roasted garlic and chive. And, the sticky duck (£14.45) was just as impressive, marinated in a sesame and soy ssauce, served with a generous helping of shredded duck, griddled pak choi, coriander and chili rice, rested on a bed of roasted plum sauce, all complemented by the side of crispy halloumi fries (£3.95). For dessert, we opted for something lighter. I chose the glazed raspberry tart (£6.45) which came in a sweet pastry case, rich crème patisserie and finished with fresh raspberries, whilst my partner chose the toffee palmier (£6.95). Named palmier because of the
distinctive shape, which resembles the top of a palm tree, this dessert did not disappoint as a thick layer of whipped cream and caramel came sandwiched between flaky puff pastry, finished with a drizzle of caramel - the ideal dish for a warm summer night. Eastside readers… get involved We want you to join us in making sure our final verdict is a true reflection of what paying customers across the region really think. Eastside’s team of reviewers are out and about, but we know our readers are a discerning bunch and we want to give you a bigger say. After we have done the rounds of the region’s finest eateries we’ll be publishing our shortlists of the best, and asking our readers to have their say in each category. We’ll add up the reader votes, put them with our judges’ own views and come up with the best of the best. Sounds a bit like how the voting works on Strictly, doesn’t it? OK, this is Eastside’s version of Strictly Come Dining! That comes later in the year… we’ll be publishing our shortlists in the September issue of Eastside. But you can get involved now by casting your vote for the Eastside Readers’ Choice. Whether you select your favourite local cafe, a much-loved Indian or Italian restaurant or any other type of food venue, all votes are equal. Voting is free: simply go online to https://www.rmcmedia.co.uk/events/awards/entry/readers-choiceaward-2018 to let us know where you have enjoyed eating out most over the last 12 months. All entries must include a home address and contact details, any multiple entries from the same email address will be disqualified. 92 Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk

There is also a discounted B&B rate on rooms for anyone attending the Eastside Restaurant Awards so if you are really making a night of it, contact reception at The Earl of Doncaster Hotel on 01302 361371. Tell them you are booking for the Eastside Restaurant Awards to qualify for the special rate.
JOIN OUR JUDGING PANEL We also want to give Eastside readers a voice on the independent judging panel that decides the ultimate prize – the Eastside Restaurant of the Year. The search is on to find one reader to join with our other judges, all chosen for their knowledge of food and their passion for dining out on the Eastside scene, to eat together at the three venues that are shortlisted for the Eastside Restaurant of the Year. You can leave your credit cards at home; all we want is your opinions. And you will need to clear your diary for a few dates later this year when we bring the judges together to dine out and make their choices. Does this opportunity tickle your tastebuds? To apply for a place on our judging panel, please email the editor, Chris Wilson, at chris.wilson@rmcmedia.co.uk and tell him in no more than 150 words what qualities you think the judges should be looking out for in the search for Eastside’s Restaurant of the Year.

Decisive: Aagrah’s Speedy
Speedy comes up trumps EXPERT HELP COMES IN HANDY WHEN A DINER IS SPOILT FOR CHOICE, WRITES CHRIS WILSON. he nickname Speedy may well be a joke, based on a character and demeanour that on first meeting seems decidedly laid back, but you can’t deny he’s decisive when it matters. Our waiter at Aagrah was put firmly on the spot by my dining companion Martin, who was struggling to get to grips with what can be a bewilderingly extensive menu and decided to let Speedy do the heavy lifting. “I don’t eat meat but all vegetarian and fish dishes are fine, and I do like my curry on the spicy side,” he said. “So what do you recommend?” Speedy continued to look as if he could sleep standing up, but in the time it takes to bite into a crisp poppadum (90p each with pickle tray £2.50) he came back with an immediate answer that made it clear he knew the menu inside out and had a ready solution to Martin’s dining dilemma. A handful of options were immediately forthcoming and it took no time for Martin to find a suggestion that fitted his dietary requirements perfectly. For starters an individual portion of the Aagrah’s special vegetarian mixed platter (normally £7.50 for two) provided an

excellent selection of lahsen mushroom, onion bhaji, vegetable samosa and paneer tikka. Everything was tasty and fresh, the bhaji and samosa were crunchy and not at all greasy. Seeing as I’d been cast in the role of carnivore for this review I dived without hesitation into the lamb chops, and was rewarded with four sensational cutlets, marinated and chargrilled and served with a drizzle of Kashmiri sauce. Red meat is an occasional treat for me these days so I don’t want to waste my time on anything mediocre; this was superb. For mains Speedy came up trumps with the suggestion of the special vegetarian thali (£11.95) which was tweaked to include a shellfish element. Four taster dishes of prawn and spinach curry, mushrooms, mixed spicy vegetables and aubergines, served with a light and chewy roti, provided all the variety and spicy heat my hard-to-please companion wanted. Add a naughty but irresistible side dish of mater paneer (£4.50) and he was reduced to a contented silence, other than to murmur that the meal as whole had been ‘seriously good’. I had to agree. For my main dish I selected
one of the regional specialities, chicken achar (£8.95). Sharp rather than chilli-hot, this combination of tender chicken breast with a sauce of green coriander, methi and mustard seeds among many other components, really gave my taste buds a good workout, and the light, fluffy nan bread £2.60) was the perfect soaker-upper, along with a portion of fragrant saffron lemon rice (£2.70). With a couple of pints of Kingfisher lager (£4.40 each) and a jug of freshly made salty lassi (5.95) to quench our thirst this was a meal to remember in a very relaxed, laid-back setting. Cheque it out PHOEBE SEYMOUR FINDS THAT BESSACARR IS FULL OF SURPRISES. ometimes the best things happen in the most unexpected places. A sat nav malfunction had resulted in me driving down a cul-de-sac in a housing estate in Bessacarr, but as I got back on the main road, a cluster of shops and businesses came into view. The Counting Hou23 – as the name may suggest – is an ex-bank turned coffee shop and wine bar. With on-trend exposed brickwork walls, metallic wire lampshades and plenty of big wooden tables, it’s hard to imagine this was ever just a place where people paid their cheques in. The only evidence of this building’s former purpose is a vintage safe in one corner and a shelf full of piggy banks in the other. By day, you will find a wide range of coffees, sandwiches, pizzas and a selection of mains, available from lunch up to tea time. But on this occasion, my sister and I had come to sample the tapas nights, which they run on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings. I was pleasantly surprised by the drinks menu – a wooden bound book with extensive lists of wines, gins, rums and cocktails. However, the helpful team at Counting Hou23 also pair up particular wines with their tapas so I went for a glass of white
S
Babich Marlborough Riesling (125ml, £5) with lemon, lime and floral notes, while my sister ordered a large glass of the red Casa Ferreirinha Esteva Doura Tinto (250ml, £6.25) with warm notes of cedar and tobacco. Warm, freshly baked bread accompanied by olive oil and balsamic vinegar made for the perfect sharable starter (£4.50). For my recommended three tapas dishes, I had the cream cheese stuffed peppers, halloumi fries and Bombay potatoes, and my sister had the marinated chicken skewers, Spanish meatballs and fried calamari (three for £10). The portions were spot on and provided a variety of flavours. The sweet mini peppers were beautifully balanced by the earthy spices of the Bombay potatoes, while the halloumi fries were perfectly golden and were well matched with sweet chili dipping sauce. Meanwhile, my sister was pleased that her calamari rings were covered in crunchy breadcrumbs, rather than a greasy chip shop style batter. And while she enjoyed the chargrilled and succulent chicken skewers, it was obvious that the rich and thick tomato sauce made the meatballs her firm favourite. With such a long list of tempting syrups, I had to finish the evening with a salted caramel latte (£2.35 plus 40p for syrup) and
a slab of rocky road (£1.50). My sister had an Americano (£1.95) and a slice of carrot cake (£2.50). These sugary treats brought the meal to a satisfying end – and unbelievably, all of their bakes were gluten free. Tucked away in Nostell Place, The Counting Hou23 is truly a hidden treasure. Whether you’re wanting a relaxing place for a coffee and cake or an after-work bite and a glass of wine, this is an eatery well-worth banking on. magine an immaculate green, blue skies overhead, the sun shining down and the soft chirping of birds in the breeze sounds like the perfect day for a round of golf. And, with a host of golf clubs and driving ranges on your doorstep in Doncaster, Bawtry and the surrounding areas it would be a shame not to make the most of the opportunities. Golf is a unique sport, combining intense concentration, socialising and skill with periods of walking around stunning landscapes. There’s really no better pastime for bringing people together, and with its combination of personal challenge, competition, exercise and interaction it makes for good health and happiness. Doncaster, Bawtry and nearby areas have a rich golfing history making it the perfect location to get into the swing of things. and there are lots of exciting new projects in the pipeline to further enhance the region’s golfing reputation. The Rossington Hall Golf Developments scheme will see the picturesque site transformed into a world class golf complex and resort under the European Tour Destinations banner. The development will see the creation of an 18-hole championship course designed by former Ryder Cup and European Tour star Neil Coles. Welcome to Yorkshire is also supporting the project, which will also see the development a nine-hole club course, clubhouse, leisure facilities and 500 homes, in addition to public footpaths, cycle routes and bridleways. Bawtry Golf Club is also set for exciting new developments with plans recently passed for a 68 bedroom hotel with adjoining conference venue, reception, health and fitness suite, bar and family dining restaurant plus housing. The new facilities will offer an innovative and engaging experience appealing to everyone whether they're a regular golfer or trying it for the first time. There will also be a new pro shop, a sports bar, a changing suite and adriving range with high tech golf games, along with a centre of excellence offering a unique coaching experience.
I
Experts behind the plan are looking to generate people’s interest and grow the game by providing a more appealing and stimulating environment. Visitors will be able to experience an alternative and educational approach to learning golf called FlowMotion which is one of many elements comprising Zen Golf. While these projects are in the early stages, there are still great places for beginners, intermediates or professionals to practise their swing. From Doncaster Golf Club, Doncaster Town Moor, Wheatley Golf Club, Kingswood Golf Centre, and Serlby Park right through to Thorne Golf Club, Bawtry Golf Club, Thornhurst Park Golf Club, Owston Hall Golf Club and Styrrup Hall Golf Club there’s somewhere to suit everyone’s needs, and you don’t have to be a member to play the courses. Golf isn’t just for adults either, as it’s fantastic for the younger generation. Not only does it provide children with exercise, but encourages them to meet new people, and is easy to learn. The majority of clubs in the region have beginner course initiatives and some great junior programmes so they’ll know the basics in no time. Bawtry Golf Club’s PGA coach Marcus Bell, has been instrumental in developing golf into the PE curriculum at Balby Carr School through Zen Golf and FlowMotion coaching. Marcus is an accomplished teacher who was first introduced to golf by his dad, becoming a pro at 19 while he was working at Newark Golf Club. From that he moved to a busy academy at a golf resort in Germany, enjoying moderate success on the EPD Tour before moving to teach at a ninehole course in Misterton. And now, as director of coaching for Zen Golf at Bawtry Golf Club, Marcus is combining his interest and expertise in sport biomechanics to encourage a new golfing experience to the Former younger generation, beginners and professionals soccer star alike. Lee Sharpe On the following page, he talks about what he is a convert thinks of the golfing scene, how he’s getting the to Zen Golf younger generation interested in the sport along with an insight into Zen Golf and FlowMotion. ¯ Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk 99

What does Zen Golf and FlowMotion entail?
I brought the FlowMotion system originally created by a Welsh PGA Professional called Bill Owens back to the UK after a visit to Paris in 2014 to meet Stephane Bachoz. Over the past four years I worked on developing it by applying the mind-body-motion philosophy of Zen Golf. This involved fusing it with biomechanics applications linked to gait mechanics, creating the key element of our Zen Golf Mechanics coaching system. What we do through holistic biomechanics is correct those constraints using the body’s intuitive intelligence in movement and flow to access its natural movement and develop a great golf swing through perception training. Through challenging the body to see how it responds we can rebalance and start to see a natural swing emerge. How are you encouraging the younger generation to get involved in the sport?
Our main focus is to change attitudes that sometimes surround the sport, and show that it’s easy to learn and you can be out on the course quicker than you think. We have a school project at Balby Carr, where we’ve created a golf PE curriculum and taught the teachers our easy to adopt coaching method and games programme. Through the school courses we have noticed that more young people have become interested in the game, even setting up their own courses after school which is great. Once the new facility at Bawtry Golf Club (BGC) is built, it’ll be fantastic as we will be able to offer much more to the local community. What do you think of the golfing scene in the area?
In Doncaster we have a golf rich community with great facilities and experienced PGA golf professionals who offer a wide range of services. There is something for everyone and I can't recommend enough getting in touch with your local PGA professional to see what’s on offer. The new proposed facility at BGC is only going to add to the area, and hopefully change the way that people perceive and engage with starting golf. Not only will it have a leisure club, spa, gym but classes including yoga, strength and conditioning programmes and Thai Chi - all linked to golf. They’ll also be an interactive driving range with gaming so you can not only play fun, stimulating games but also see the science behind what you are doing. It’s going to be very engaging and non-intimidating, offering something very different from the expected golfing scene.

As someone who has never picked up a golf club before, the game has always been a bit of a mystery to me. So, when Marcus Bell offered to give me a Flow Motion lesson, I jumped at the chance and put his coaching skills to the test. I was little bit apprehensive to start with, but Marcus’s relaxed demeanour made me feel right at home. To start with we looked at my lower body movement, weight distribution, balance and foot placement to help establish my natural swing. Then, Marcus simply asked me to hold the golf club how I felt comfortable which turned out to be a baseball grip, meaning my fingers How can people get involved? supported the weight of the club. Good things come in small packages If you want a luxurious vehicle but don’t want your usual three big German manufacturers – Mercedes, BMW and Audi – then Volvo is your next best bet. In recent years the Germans have pounced on the emergence of the small premium crossover market – the most popular market in the world – whilst Volvo has yet to catch up on the act, until now. Named the Volvo XC40, it’s the perfect younger brother to the XC60 ad XC90 as it holds all their core values and luxury feel but compacted into a smaller package. Three petrol engines and two diesel engines are available with power ranging between 150 and 250hp. Offered with front- or all-wheel drive, and manual and automatic gearboxes. Priced from £27,610
Design Editions The McLaren 570S Spider is one of the world’s best all-round supercars at the moment. With its speed, looks, presence, handling and build quality nothing can really touch it within its class. There are five Design Editions: Silica White, Storm Grey, Vermillion Red, Onyx Black or Vega Blue. Each colour is matched to an interior scheme from the By McLaren Designer range; four sporting and one with a more luxury accent. Wheel finish, brake caliper colour and branding and finish of the 570S Spider’s electrically retractable two-piece hard-top are also all selected by McLaren designers. As with the normal 570S Spider, power is generated from a twin-turbo 3.8-litre V8 making 562hp, with a 0-62mph time of 3.2 seconds with vmax occurring at 204mph. Priced from around £173,000.
THE M2 IS DEAD… LONG LIVE THE M2 The BMW M2 – the car which has wowed the motoring community since its launch in the spring of 2016, and made its name as one of the best M-division cars to ever be made – is now dead. While this may seem be a tragic miscalculation by BMW, trust us, it isn’t, because say hello to the BMW M2 Competition. What makes this different from the normal M2? Well, apart from changes to the steering, braking system, exhaust and suspension and wrapping it in a revised exterior design that has been enhanced for aerodynamic efficiency, the biggest change is with the engine – fitted under the hood is the same engine from the BMW M3/M4 but detuned to ‘only’ 410hp. Manual and automatic options available. Cost? £49,285. 104 Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk
Motorsport heritage Is there anything quite like a Lotus? They are barebones, no-nonsense motoring with a motorsport heritage that can give the likes of Ferrari and Lamborghini a run for their money on the public roads. And the best of all – they’re British! Lotus’s new creation, the Exige Cup 430 Type 25, as the name suggests, is based on the ballistic Exige 430 car, with the Type 25 playing homage to the Type 25 F1 racing car of the 1960s piloted by the great Jim Clark with its unique livery in metallic Lotus Racing Green or Old English White. Powered by a 3.5-litre supercharged V6 motor, it produces 430hp and 440Nm, a 0-60mph time of 3.2 seconds and 220kg of downforce. Price? £110,000.

One Call Insurance invests £1million in car insurance brand Doncaster’s One Call Insurance has invested £1million into its new car insurance sub-brand, One Quick Quote. Unveiled as an innovative and time-saving online tool that enables consumers to go ‘from click to quote in just 60 seconds’, One Quick Quote aims to eliminate the time and hassle usually associated with having to fill out complex three to five page forms in order to obtain a car insurance quote. Developed in-house, One Quick Quote connects consumers to a panel of insurers and subsequently returns the best price based on a combination of consumer entered data and a list of pre-populated assumptions. If a consumer is happy with their quote they can fully transact online and are in the process asked to confirm that any assumptions are correct. If they aren’t, the consumer can amend them prior to completing the transaction. The launch of One Quick Quote comes off the back of a recordbreaking year which has seen One Call Insurance record an almost 20 per cent year-on-year growth in GWP (Gross Written Premium). Furthermore, as of January 2018, it has reached the 500,000 live customer milestone.
