ES Theatre

A

chilling breeze sweeps through Doncaster this March as the curtain rises on the first stage adaptation of Susan Hill’s novel, The Mist in the Mirror, at Cast, Doncaster from Tuesday 24 to Saturday 28 March. Susan Hill achieved worldwide fame with The Woman In Black, a chilling ghost story that has now been successfully adapted for stage and screen. Her writing career has encompassed acclaimed literary novels, ghost stories, children’s books, detective novels, memoirs and even a sequel to Daphne du Maurier’s Rebecca. She has won the Whitbread, Somerset Maugham and John Llewelyn Rhys awards, as well as having been shortlisted for the Booker Prize. Twenty-five years after its premiere, the theatre adaptation of The Woman in Black is still running in the West End and is constantly on tour, while Daniel Radcliffe’s first postHarry Potter film was the 2012 Hammer Horror film version. The Mist In The Mirror was Hill’s second ghost story, first published in 1992, ten years after The Woman in Black. It is staged as if audiences are eavesdroppers to a fireside ghost story, told in the manner of the master of the classic English ghost story writer, M.R. James. This tense and atmospheric new production is by Oldham Coliseum Theatre, adapted by Ian Kershaw, with visual theatre innovators imitating the dog, who brought Ernest Hemingway’s A Farewell to Arms to Cast last autumn, creating an unsettling ethereal atmosphere both on stage and off. The story tells of Mr James Monmouth who has spent most of his life travelling, following in the footsteps of his childhood

www.regionalmagazine.co.uk

hero, the explorer Conrad Vane. Returning to the England he left as a five year old orphan, James is determined to discover more, not just about his origins but also about the early life of Vane. Warned against pursuing this quest, James becomes ever more determined to unravel the mysteries of the past. But who is the mysterious pale, thin ghost like boy who haunts his every step? Which brings us to the whole notion of ghosts, the enduring popularity of ghost stories and why, even though The Woman in Black has proved one of the most successful plays in UK theatre history, so few other ghost stories seem to have been produced on stage. “Yes, you might have thought that the idea of adapting The Mist in the Mirror for the stage would have come up over the years, wouldn’t you? But it never has, I think people have been afraid to follow The Woman in Black,” Susan muses. “I very much steer away from calling it ‘horror’, it’s a ghost play, but it’s a genre some people don’t like and don’t want to be involved in. They think ‘oh, cheap thrills’ but the skill is to make sure it’s fundamentally theatrical, and has its frightening moments. Ghosts which just drift upstairs and take their heads off when they don’t have any reason to do so are not frightening, just pointless!” Hill has told many tales, publishing nearly 60 books as well as uncountable articles since her first novel was published during her first year at university. But she does not get involved with any adaptations of her books. “My job is simply to write the book, then let the adapters, like Ian Kershaw, take that material and run with it, to recreate it in

another form. I think that writers who want to have control of everything in a medium which isn’t theirs are quite wrong.Your only prerogative really is to say ‘No, I don’t want it done’. “However, I’m very pleased Oldham Coliseum have chosen this particular book. It was a joy to write because I used so many of my favourite settings, including Edwardian London, the river Thames, the old docks, an English country house, and the North Yorkshire moors. It also has some of my favourite eccentric characters. “I can’t often trace influences in my own books but Dickens is indisputably in there. He’s my great influence and I have to be very careful sometimes, even writing myself a note like ‘do not do fog again’ when I’m writing a new book!” She’s in her seventies now but shows no signs of letting her own muse drift away. “I go on writing and reading. The one feeds the other every day.” That aside, she has no writing routine at all. “I just can’t understand this notion some writers talk about of sitting down at nine o’clock and not getting back up until five even if there’s only two words on the sheet!” The Mist in the Mirror is at Cast, Doncaster from Tuesday 24 – Saturday 28 March.Tickets are £18.50 / £15.50 concessions*, £10.50 schools* (pupils only, one free teacher for every ten paid). All matinee tickets £15.50* and are available on 01302 303 959 and from castindoncaster.com. *Includes 50p per ticket booking fee, not charged if paying by cash.

ES Property

The right balance What will happen to the Doncaster property market in 2015? Matthew Kirk of Moss Properties has the answers.

D

oncaster property values are 3.9 per cent higher today than they were in February 2014 but 0.3 per cent lower than they were three months ago. It should be no great surprise to hear that Doncaster property values are starting to slow up as we enter the new year. Property values in the town were growing at extraordinary rates earlier in 2014, when they were impressively rising by over one per cent per month in the late spring. However, as the leaves turned brown, property prices slowed down and, as already mentioned, in fact dropped slightly in the last few months of 2014. The reality is we have had 14 months (since the winter of late 2013) of outstanding market conditions in Doncaster, but now all that pent-up demand is starting to fade. The big question moving forward is whether the Doncaster market will now be held back by affordability and restricted mortgage lending and what long-term impact this will have on the Doncaster property market. It is obvious to me and my fellow agents in Doncaster that we are all beginning to be wary about the direction of the market as a result of the not-as-strong demand and fewer house sales. So to answer the question ‘what will

www.regionalmagazine.co.uk

happen in 2015?: supply and demand will become increasingly better balanced, so house price gains in Doncaster will continue to drift down towards zero over the next few months until the general election. However, I do not expect sustained house price falls in the town like we did in 2008/9 (when prices dropped by 19.4 per cent in Doncaster) thanks to record low mortgage rates, rising wages and early signs that lenders are starting to increase the availability of mortgages. If I had to stick my head out on this, depending on the election result, property values will either drop by three per cent in Doncaster by the end of the year if we have a hung Parliament (because of the uncertainty that brings) or a modest rise of 3-5 per cent if a pro-business, pro-property party gets into power.

But what should one buy? Well, buy-to-let is the balance between capital growth (how much a property increases in value over time) verses yield. You may think you should pick a property that has great capital growth because of the obvious potential to generate long-term capital profit, especially with inflation eating away at our savings. However, rental yields on high capital growth properties tend to be low, meaning if you are taking a high percentage mortgage, the rent doesn’t pay the mortgage payments. Or you could look for a property with a bit of both? (yield and capital growth). Before everyone gets gloomy at the recent minor property price drops, it must be said that this is all relative. The average value of a property in Doncaster today is £142,100, but it was only £54,160 in 2000. If you had put that same £54,160 into the stock market in 2000 instead of property, it would only be worth £64,294 today. Buy-to-let investments should be for the long-term gain! If you are unsure what to do, whether you’re a first time landlord or a seasoned pro, feel free to pop your head round our door at 1 Prince’s Street, Doncaster, DN1 3NJ, or email me on matthew@mosspm.co.uk. I know what sort of properties match whatever you want from your property investment and I can give you my honest, unbiased opinion.

Impressive selection Sink your toes into a new carpet from United, the large company with family values.

A

fter a hard day at the office, there are few more satisfying sensations than kicking off your shoes and sinking your toes into a sumptuous new carpet. At United Carpets and Beds, the largest franchised flooring company in the UK, you’ll find everything you need to make this vision a reality – and a whole lot more besides. Very much a family business, the store in Doncaster is run by Joanne and John Horgan, who became franchisees in 1999. Joanne’s sister, Lisa Beaumont, also runs her own carpet store on Queens Road in Sheffield. Both sisters operate highly successful franchises for United Carpets and Beds. With a combined 22 years in the business behind them, keeping it in the family is clearly a recipe for success. “Because United Carpets and Beds is such a large company it can leverage the best prices from suppliers, yet the store remains a local family business,” says Joanne. “When you come into our store, you won’t get a hard sell – just good, friendly service from local people you can rely on.” United Carpets and Beds offer quality carpets and floor coverings at affordable prices, and beds in all different shapes and sizes, making it a one-stop shop for your home comforts. New carpets are always arriving in-store and there is an amazing selection of traditional ‘off the roll’ and bespoke carpets, including hardwearing Berbers, stain resistant

twists, sumptuous Saxonys and luxury wools, ensuring there is a carpet to suit every customer. Joanne, John, Lisa and many more United Carpets franchisees will soon be jetting off to Spain to see the latest collections. The United Carpets network, along with many of their suppliers from Belgium, Holland and the UK, will be travelling to Marbella this month for a national buying conference. They will be the first to see the new carpet collections and bring them back to stores in the UK. The new spring/summer ranges will be available from Easter and promise to inject some lovely colours into your home in time for the warmer weather. “Beige carpet is always a popular choice in spring but it is really nice to see some strong colours popping up this season, such as aubergine, pink and burnt orange,” says Joanne. If you’re looking for an alternative to carpeted floors, United Carpets and Beds also boasts a large and impressive selection of laminate, real wood and vinyl floorings. You can add a softer touch with one of their many luxury rugs. You’re also able to browse the large display of beds and mattresses, from children’s beds through to luxury memory foam divans, plus modern metal and woodenframed beds. The selection at United Carpets and Beds is impressive, but there is nothing more remarkable than the price. Carpet prices, for example, start from only £2.99 per square

metre and all carpets are delivered and fitted free when purchasing underlay. They know that buying flooring can be a big decision, especially when you’re faced with so much choice. But with expert, knowledgeable staff on-hand to help you every step of the way, you’re guaranteed to find the perfect flooring for you. “We use expert carpet fitters that work every day of the week so you are looked after from the minute you walk into the store until the minute you are standing on your new carpet,” adds Joanne. United Carpets and Beds is open seven days a week, with a late opening of 8pm on Thursdays. Joanne, John, Lisa and all the team look forward to welcoming you soon. Continuing success

When a local business achieves 40 years of continuous trading it is a milestone worth celebrating... so let’s pop a few corks and say ‘cheers’ as we toast the continuing success story that is Sheffield Window Centre.

I

t was way back in 1975, when Rubik’s Cubes were all the rage and Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen topped the charts, that the company was founded. Fast forward 40 years and Ian Hunter, who took over the running of Sheffield Window Centre (SWC) in the early eighties, is

managing director... and with all his four grown-up children also involved, this is a true family business. You don’t last that long in the same city unless you receive consistently excellent feedback from satisfied customers – and as the decades have rolled by, generations of

Sheffield folk have found SWC to be the first, and most reliable, name they look for. SWC was also the first Sheffield business to be given Trusted Trader status by Which?, a nationwide consumer champion website that not only tests products from washing machines to power tools, but also gives local companies a rigorous assessment before naming only the very best on their online directory of recommended trades people. Of course, there have been big changes since 1975 and SWC has stayed at the very top by investing in new machinery, adopting green policies, and constantly researching methods of production to provide the most up-to-date levels of security and thermal efficiency. The one thing that hasn’t changed, and never will, is their “old fashioned” approach to selling. SWC is renowned for its ‘No Pressure Policy’ – leaving customers to decide in their own time. Whether it be price, product, or service – they can’t be beaten and that’s the reason they never need to push or pester. The company, which has premises on Oakbrook Road, Broad Lane, Scotland Street and Rockingham Street, uses top brand

REHAU – a market leader in polymer extrusion – for all their installations. Their multi-chambered profile uPVC doesn’t warp or discolour like so many lesser brands. And if you’re worried you won’t be able to get a frame to match your desired colour or design, don’t be. Frames come in a variety of coloured foils, including cream, black, grey and green, as well as several wood grain colours including rosewood and oak.You can also have your frames sprayed to match any RAL colour – so you’ll have new windows that look exactly how you want them to. Good-looking windows are no good if you can still feel the chill – but thanks to SWC, you won’t feel a thing. Their standard windows have energy efficiency ratings of A, while their standard double-glazed units are made from Pilkington’s KS glass, are argonfilled and incorporate a warm edge spacer bar to retain the heat in your home. It’s not

just about staying cosy, though – energy efficient windows can help you to make big savings on your heating bill. Perhaps the most important thing you want from a window is to know that it’s secure, that it will keep would-be thieves successfully at bay. SWC’s windows are fitted with a multi-point shoot bolt locking mechanism – the best there is. They also fit anti-jemmy devices on all vulnerable opening windows – so you’ve got the peace of mind of knowing that you’ll be as safe as possible. Don’t be misled by the name, by the way – SWC do more than just windows. They offer an expert stained glass service and fascias and soffits, as well as high-quality doors. These all have Hoppe Security handles fitted as standard – approved by the police, no less – as well as cylinder locks which are anti-pick, drill, snap and bump and again have a multi-point locking system. There’s more, too – specifically, conservatories. Due to the advances in glass specification, SWC can now provide conservatories, which

are suitable for year-round use, thanks to glass which has been specifically designed for the purpose. It offers a wide range of benefits including thermal insulation with solar control, glare reduction, enhanced sound insulation and self-cleaning properties. The company can also install underfloor heating and laminated floors, as well as taking care of the building, plastering and electrical work, so you only deal with one point of contact throughout the entire process. Get in touch with Sheffield Window Centre today – they care about your windows, doors and conservatories just as much as you do. Style showcase

Scarfarama day at Yasmine

After last year’s success, Bawtry Fashion Week 2015 is set to be even bigger and better. Find out what’s in store...

T

his time last year, Bawtry came alive with the excitement, glamour and community spirit of the market town’s annual fashion week. Founded in 2013 by the Bawtry Retail Association (BRA), the event aims to promote the importance of shopping on your local high street and supporting the local economy. Bawtry’s fashion retailers have fully embraced this ambitious idea and last year they pulled out all the stops to host some amazingly innovative events that ensured Bawtry lived up to its reputation as the fashion capital of the area. During the week, Yasmine held a Scarfarama Day where ladies were shown what a versatile accessory the scarf is. Designer fashion boutique Robinsons hosted an online fashion show where items from their ladies spring/summer 2014 collections were modelled by Britain’s Next Top Model finalist Danielle Sandhu. Incognito created three separate scenes at interior’s boutique Womacks – ‘the boardroom’, ‘ladies that lunch’ and ‘cocktails and evening’ – which provided much inspiration to visitors.

& She Knows... stops traffic 6 | www.visitbawtry.com

Dawn Farnell hosted three fashion shows in-store before her models then went for a stroll around the town enjoying the spring sunshine. And, so shoppers could complete their look, The Vanilla Rooms offered lessons on how to do your hair like a celebrity. The impressive week was rounded off by an unforgettable fashion show that saw four swimwear models bringing traffic to a standstill on the town’s high street. The girls, who were part of a lingerie and swimwear photo shoot by boutique & She Knows…, emulated the famous Beatles Abbey Road scene as they posed in the balmy afternoon sunshine. Bawtry’s luxury fashion retailers were supported by many of the town’s bars and restaurants, which created special drinks, menus and treats for visitors to enjoy as well as a lavish after show party being hosted by Ziniz. This year’s fashion week is now right around the corner and the BRA are hoping to make the event even bigger, better and glitzier than before. Style will soon take centre stage as Bawtry Fashion Week 2015 returns from Sunday 8 March to Saturday 14 March. The week will see visitors flock to the stylish streets of Bawtry

once more and the local independent boutiques will put on a show to remember. The local fashion retailers involved this year include & She Knows…, Bawtry Eye Academy, Bawtry Shoe Company, Cherish Dress Agency, Be Envied, Incognito, Robinsons of Bawtry and Yasmine of Bawtry. To showcase all the great things that Bawtry has to offer, Trax FM presenter Lucy Doxey will be providing daily reports about the events lined up throughout the week, as well as interviews with people involved with BFW. She will be attending as many events as possible and doing a daily report on her daytime show, making her your go-to source for all the fashion news, photos and gossip. Catch Lucy on Trax FM 107.1 and 107.9, weekdays between 10am–2pm. Keep up to date at: www.traxfm.co.uk www.facebook.com/traxfm @TraxFM

For every occasion Look fantastic from top to toe with a trip to the Lash & Nail Boutique, Bawtry.

L

ash & Nail Boutique opened in The Courtyard in spring 2013 and, last Christmas, the beautiful salon was taken over by Harriet Bolland. Along with their fantastic team, they now offer new and exciting treatments, as well as the favourites that ladies of Bawtry have come to know and love. Nail services include everything from Gelish to acrylic and there is a host of lash treatments to choose from, too. Strip lashes by Millie Mackintosh are perfect for parties, or why not try Nouveau for semi-permanent lashes that are individually applied? For a true slice of luxury, real mink lashes are the current celeb favourite, or you could enhance your natural lashes without the need for extensions with the revolutionary LVL treatment. Brows are also big business at the Lash & Nail Boutique. Brow shaping is the hottest treatment of the moment, with well-tended brows framing the face in the most beautiful way. Leading the way is Hollywood favourite HD Brows, which pioneered the recent revolution in brow taming, shaping and tinting. The salon also specialises in HD make-up, whether it’s for weddings, proms, nights out or

any other special occasion. Whether you favour the full-on party look or prefer a more demure, natural style, there are lash, nail, brow and professional make-up services to suit. In short, you’ll find everything the glamorous lady needs to keep looking her very best. Fabulous products and indulgent treatments by premium skincare brand Dermalogica are also available, and are tailored to your specific needs. No matter what skincare concerns you have, the expert team will advise on the very best treatments and products for you. To ensure you’re able to take full advantage of these fabulous services – whatever your budget – a great range of seasonal promotions is available. During March, April and May, clients can treat themselves to one of the many Spring Fling special offers at the salon. On Manicure Mondays, kick off the week with a Gelish manicure at half the usual price.

BAWTRY HAS A HEART Business owners in the Bawtry showed their support for the first charity event of the year, by donning red attire in support of British Heart Foundation’s ‘wear it, beat it’ campaign. Members of BRA (Bawtry Retail Association), selected the British Heart Foundation as one of its 2015 charities along with local cancer charity Aurora, for which the town has raised thousands of pounds in recent years. “We are proud to support these two fantastic charities and have lots of events planned in the coming months,” said Rebecca Dickenson, chair of BRA. “Both are important to many of our members and we will endeavour to raise awareness as well as funds.” A Facebook page – Be Nice in Bawtry – has also been launched by James Jones, marketing director for Robinsons of Bawtry. The page encourages Bawtry business owners, staff and residents to make a small donation each month, which will be shared amongst various local and national charities. | RETAILER OF THE MONTH

www.visitbawtry.com

Stylish collections From a fantastic festive showpiece to consistent high quality service, Womacks of Bawtry was an obvious choice for our retailer of the month.

C

ongratulations to Womacks of Bawtry for being named this edition of Visit Bawtry’s Retailer of the Month! The designer lighting and furniture company was an easy choice for first place because of their year-on-year effort and continuous support to make Bawtry a great place to visit and shop. They truly provide the wow factor in product choice and customer service, and source many items from stylish continental designers as well as Ireland and the UK. Their collections are ultra-chic, contemporary yet classic, and uber-glamorous. So, whether you want to treat your home to a new light, mirror, cushion or signature ornamental pieces, a browse around Womacks’ showroom or website is certain to inspire you. As well as interior accessories, Womacks of Bawtry understand it’s important to take time to choose the right furniture and lighting to complement any home. They even offer an interior design service where owner David Womack comes to your property to provide advice on everything from furniture, lighting and wall coverings, to made-to-measure curtains.

24 | www.visitbawtry.com

David Womack and partner Mark

While Womacks of Bawtry has everything you need to craft a beautiful home, they also understand how important it is to create the ideal flowers and centre pieces for your wedding day. They invite you to make an appointment to view their flowers and past wedding designs for inspiration, to help you create wedding flowers that will express your individual style. Whether you are looking for simplicity or sheer extravagance, you can be sure that your wedding flowers will be both beautiful and memorable. In addition to furniture, interior accessories, wedding flowers and centrepieces, they offer a range of fantastic ladies jewellery, silk flowers and gift vouchers, which make perfect presents. While their fantastic products and services alone might have won them the Retailer of the Month Award, their notable contribution to the festivities in Bawtry certainly secured the accolade. Just like the Coca Cola lorry, for many in Bawtry Christmas has not arrived until Womacks have unveiled their fantastic window

display. David, his partner Mark and the staff work tirelessly each year to make the Christmas window bigger and better and fill the town with festive spirit. They even transform half the shop into a breathtaking Christmas courtyard. This year, David unveiled the window at the Bawtry Christmastime event. As a huge crowd gathered, a brass band played outside, bagpipers emerged from Womacks playing Christmas carols and the window was unveiled by children from Mayflower School. The event was extremely memorable for all that attended and David was completely overwhelmed by the turnout. Their stylish collections and impeccable service, combined with impressive attention to detail and support to the Bawtry community, confirms Womacks of Bawtry undoubtedly deserve the Retailer of the Month Award. There’s much more to come at The Turnpike in the coming months, including a brand new kitchen and home-cooked food menu.

T

he Turnpike has long been known as one of Bawtry’s favourite venues to enjoy a relaxed drink, some food and live music. But the pub has seen some changes in the last few months, and in September last year Kim Downing joined the team as general manager. With over 13 years’ experience in hospitality and a background in project management Kim is the ideal person to help landlord Steve Womack ensure that The Turnpike reaches its full potential. Although the kitchen is currently closed for refurbishment, in the coming months The Turnpike will become home to a modernised kitchen with extended opening hours. Kim is hoping to turn the current courtyard and beer garden into an area with a bottle and cocktail bar. “A lot of people in Bawtry don’t know that there is a courtyard here. There is going to be solar lighting and maybe some barbecuing on a night time. “The potential here is amazing and the new menu is going to be based on good home-cooked food, made from fresh, locallysourced ingredients.” This home-from-home pub welcomes strangers and locals alike, and even their fourlegged friends. Whether you fancy some live music, just a coffee, or a pub quiz (on a Wednesday), pop down to The Turnpike where you’ll find Kim and her fantastic team.

STARS OF THE PUBS Kim’s two teenage daughters, who both work at the pub, have recently been thrown into the limelight by making it through to the final of the Top Model UK competition. Tanisha, 18, has previously modelled for Cast’s marketing posters and Cuts and Co in Armthorpe. Kim encouraged her to enter the competition and after a day of casting auditions in September last year in London – where the girls were put through their paces on the catwalk, being measured, photographed and interviewed – Tanisha made it through to the finals. Although Soraya only went along to support her sister, a member of Top Model UK staff insisted she enter the competition. Kim says: “She took her to the show director and he wanted her to audition

there and then, but there wasn’t any shoes that fit. So we had to return for another casting in December and she made it through to the finals.” The competition contains five categories: editorial, commercial, men, natural beauty and over 25s. Each category of finalists will strut their stuff at the Hilton London Metropole on 13 March and 14 March in a bid to be declared the winner. In addition to Top Model being a major UK and international model search, each year it adopts a chosen charity to support and raise awareness for. For 2015, Top Model will once again be supporting childhood cancer charity Children with Cancer UK www.childrenwithcancer.org.uk. In 2014 Top Model raised over £16,000 for the charity and they hope to beat the total this year. Womacks of Bawtry are sponsoring both of the girls for this fantastic event. The Co-operative’s Fairtrade wines – there are some great offers to be had

Eat

The heart of Bawtry From Fairtrade wine to Fair and Square pricing campaigns, there are plenty of reasons why the Co-operative is the number one choice for many.

W

ith a store in every postal area in the UK, for most people The Cooperative Food is their go-to local convenience store. Bawtry is no exception and the town’s local shop is very much at the heart of its community. Open from 7am-11pm every day it is always there for you, whether you just need a pint of milk or you’re whipping up a culinary masterpiece. Last year, The Co-operative undertook 752 store refurbishments across the UK. The newlook stores have a focus on essential meal ideas and healthy, fresh foods and staff have received additional training to provide expert advice to help inspire customers with meal ideas. Putting the focus firmly on food, last year alone The Co-operative launched 1,013 new own brand products. They have a very popular premium range, Truly Irresistible, and their Loved by Us brand is a result of much in-depth consumer research. In 2014 The Co-operative launched the Born and Bred campaign in which they pledged to invest a minimum of £1.5billion to source meat, produce and dairy products from the UK. They only sell 100 per cent fresh British beef, chicken, ham, pork, sausages, duck and turkey and only use British meat in all ownbrand chilled ready meals. With so much hard work put into the integrity of their food, it is hardly surprising that last year The Co-operative Food was crowned Chilled Retailer of the Year, Convenience Store

Pizza Retailer of the Year and Ethical Drinks Retailer of the Year. They have also invested £100million in reducing prices through the Fair and Square pricing campaign. The permanent price reductions – which average five per cent – are across a wide range of essential staple products typically found in a Co-operative customer’s basket. In Bawtry, The Co-operative has a team of 12 employees who are committed to playing an active role in local life and embracing the town’s community spirit. The friendly team are always on-hand to help shoppers pick up all the ingredients necessary to produce fantastic meals. Brenda Langlands is one of the longest serving members of the team and she is wellknown for brightening up customers’ days by singing while she works in the bakery. Brenda’s favourite food in the store is the new range of Truly Irresistible pizzas. Lyn Hunter is the store manager and plays an active role in the Bawtry Retail Association. Lyn enjoys nothing more than a glass of the award-winning Co-operative Truly Irresistible Marlborough Pinot Grigio 2013, which is £6.99 a bottle. The Co-operative is the UK’s largest retailer of Fairtrade wine, ensuring that more than £2.5million has gone back in support of projects benefitting vineyard workers and their families. The range is expanding all the time and currently comprises 25 wines sourced from South Africa, Chile and Argentina.

The Co-operative Food currently has a fantastic selection of wine offers running from 18 March until 7 April inclusive. Don’t miss the Easter-themed Bawtry Farmers Market on 4 April.

I

t may once have been a secret hideaway where only those in the know could find a wealth of wonderful independent shops and eateries – but word has now spread that the Courtyard in Bawtry is the place to be. This is thanks in no small part to the twicemonthly farmers market, which began last June and now takes place in the Courtyard on the first and third Saturday of every month from 9am to 3pm. The brainchild of Courtyard retailers, it flourished in 2014’s summer months and – though crowds understandably thinned a little during winter – the Easter-themed relaunch on 4 April is set to kick off the new season in style. There’ll be plenty to keep the whole

family entertained – including circus skills lessons – so be sure to pop along. With many stallholders now on board, you’ll also find a great mix of produce – including a huge variety of stalls that will make every foodie’s mouth water. The Farmers Farm Shop from Westwoodside sells meat, vegetables and pork pies and will soon launch a separate fruit and veg stall; Humble Homity sells the most gorgeous brownies, traybakes and homity pies; Charlie’s Chutney has lovely jams, chutneys and pickles; Propa Pies sells a great variety of homemade pies; Artisan Foods has pates and artisan breads courtesy of the award-winning chef from the Albion bakery in Epworth; Rosie Q’s Kitchen sells beautiful handmade chocolates; Tuxford Windmill is a delight of flours and mueslis; and Autumn Harvest Mushrooms not only sells fresh and dried mushrooms but also serves up tasty mushroom soup to take away. Those looking to spruce up their home and garden are also in for a treat with new stall

BRIGHT SPARKS FOR SPRING

The latest brand to join Petits Enfants this season is beautiful Dutch fashion house Oilily, a hallmark of creativity in the cupboard of children since 1963. Make sure you check out their gorgeous garments and pretty pieces in store

Crisp, cool and colourful styles should be making their way into your wardrobe this season, writes Claudia Calzini.

T

he shelves of spring have burst into the shopping sphere bringing with them fresh cuts, lighter fabrics and softer shades. Wild winter berries and plum palettes have been laid aside for crisper, cooler colours, with saccharine pastels, earthy military hues and canary colour combos filtering into the fashion flow, whilst yellow tones in particular are proving popular on the colour chart from the catwalks. From sweet saffrons to buttery ambers and myriad marigolds, this is forecasted to be one of spring’s chicest tones. Classic monochrome and head-to-toe whites are also hot favourites with a trendy take on patterns, textures and tailoring giving them a more contemporary charm, whilst powder pinks remain an annual fashion frontrunner for the spring season. Reporting from the runway, athletic influences, army aesthetics, bohemian vogue, princess prep, half cuts, cute coordinates, mix and matching separates, sexy slits, sultry sheer signatures, reinvented gingham and offshoulder and one-shoulder staples promise to be prime pieces in this season’s trend territory. Edgy elegance, in the form of luxe lace and layering, is becoming a standard evening

62

silhouette for fashion-savvy stylistas, whilst jumpsuits, blazers and courts are the perfect outfit option to take you from work to ‘Woo Woos’. We see a return of archetypal denim renovated with faded textured tints, washedout colourways and faded blues too. A leather pencil skirt and evening trousers are must-haves for the new season, whilst a classic trench, a suede signature and an oversized tote are fabulous fashion go-to items for the sophisticated lady taking her from the desk to a date. Kimonos are on the rise amongst the rails and are perfect for spring’s sun and showers, proving to be chic but cushy, whilst black, white, tans and camels are traditional tints that will never make you doubt your look. Opt for a tailored shirtdress and a sweater-dress for your daytime wardrobe, and keep in mind that, this season, jeans are taking a trip to the baggy side going cropped and loose. Channelling an air of ethereal femininity is the ballerina-inspired cut, with feathers, fringing and ruffles coming in the form of tutus and tulle skirts, whilst the flavour for fitness can be found in the sport luxe sector with mesh, netting and a neon niche dominating. Happy spring shopping girls!

Everybody is asking about… Chinese Meridien fire cupping.

A

n ancient Chinese therapy, in which a glass cup is applied to the skin and pressure in the cup is reduced by heat in order to draw and hold the skin, is creating quite a stir locally. This treatment, known as glided cupping, pulls the skin and muscle. It feels amazing, is very relaxing and improves health, removing any stagnation allowing the blood to flow more freely. What does it help? It helps rejuvenate and benefits organs that are not functioning properly and is particularly good for asthma, chest infections, flu, colds, and is very good for injuries and muscle strain. It is used by Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) practitioners and is a traditional Chinese Treatment. Its uses are very similar to acupuncture. Cupping, like acupuncture, has been successfully employed in China to treat respiratory diseases including asthma.

Q&A: Send your wellbeing questions to Liz @ ElizabethAnn61@live.co.uk One will be chosen and published monthly. Clinic @ The Vanilla Rooms, Bawtry. Dear Liz, I have very bad asthma and wondered what natural therapy you would suggest to help, or any tips you have. Joan, Tickhill Liz replies: The article above explains that cupping is a very good holistic therapy for helping treat asthma, but please remember a traditional therapist will treat the whole person rather than the disease, wanting to get to the root of a problem. Like all holistic practitioners, lifestyle and environmental factors will be a consideration before commencing treatment. Hypnosis is also another therapy to consider for the treatment of asthma, alongside controlled slow breathing exercises. All the above are availabe with me at The Vanilla Rooms Bawtry. ES Learning Plus

Pride and joy

Be it their education, extracurricular activities or eclectic style, put your children first with these fantastic local establishments. Stagecoach Theatre Arts Schools Stagecoach is the largest network of part-time performing arts schools for four to 18-year-olds. Learning the performing arts brings many benefits. Children become more confident and are able to express themselves creatively. They learn balance and poise in dance, which improves coordination, and can help keep them trim. In singing, children learn to work with a group, listening carefully to others, and are taught a range of styles. In drama, they also learn to listen and to discuss, so that they can contribute collaboratively. They learn how to project their voice and to speak confidently. The performing arts can be very hands on – children do not have to do much reading and very little writing. Creative children who may sometimes struggle in school can find it a wonderful way to express themselves. Some parents want their quiet child to gain confidence, and stage school is a great place for that. However, the most important element for children is that they should have fun, make new friends and have a chance to perform. Stagecoach Sheffield Beighton meets at Westfield Sports College on Eckington Road on Friday evenings. Stagecoach Rotherham meets at St Bernard’s RC High School on Herringthorpe Valley Road on Saturday mornings. For details, call Ken or Pat Davison on 01757 248884 or visit www.stagecoach.co.uk

Hill House School Hill House School is the fastest growing independent school in the region for a number of reasons; GCSE and A level results are the best in the area, the school is county champions in many sports, and music and drama are both of a very high standard. Head of the Junior School, Jonathan Hall , says ‘Demand for places in both Juniors and Seniors is so high at the moment that we have recently opened 4 new classes in the juniors; this has allowed us to offer more places and also reduce class sizes further, so that most classes now have about 14 or 15 children at most. This means that our children are known as individuals and that we can maintain the family atmosphere which is so important to parents.’ Interested families are encouraged to arrange a visit to Hill House. Alternatively, call 01302 776300 or visit www.hillhouse.doncaster.sch.uk

Pud! A new affordable childrenswear store recently opened in the King’s Arcade, Doncaster. Pud! is the brainchild of retail entrepreneurs Fran Bishop and Rachel Mawbry and has revolutionised the kids clothing market, making designer brands affordable for every budget. “We know that parents are savvy shoppers,” says Fran. “Mums and dads want the best for their kids without spending a fortune – and that’s where we can help. Our goal is to offer high-quality clothes that won’t break the bank.” Pud! consistently offers great value for money, thanks to outstanding relationships with suppliers, which means they can hold early sales and exclusive stock. Their sister store in Nottingham city centre stocks clothes, shoes and accessories for under tens from a host of popular brands including French Connection, Olive and Moss, Ben Sherman and Hush Puppies. As well as designer labels, many of the brands stocked are independent and up-and-coming names in the kids clothing world. Pud! will also exclusively offer a best-selling in-house label Not So Bad – already a firm favourite in the Nottingham store. Fran says: “When we outgrew our Epworth store, positioning ourselves right opposite the Frenchgate Shopping Centre in Doncaster was a no-brainer.” The Pud! store is open 9.30am-5pm Monday-Saturday and shoppers can also browse online at www.thepudstore.com.

Queen Ethelburga’s Collegiate Independent Education Girls & Boys 3 to 19 years Day & Boarding Thorpe Underwood, Yorkshire. Phone: 01423 333 330 Email: info@QE.org Web: www.QE.org

Are we all about academics? No, but were you aware the Daily Telegraph and The Times both rank QE College as the top most academically successful day and boarding school in the North for A*/ A grades at A Level and equivalent results and our Faculty of Queen Ethelburga’s, the third most academically successful co-educational day and boarding school in the North for A*/ A grades at A Level and equivalent results?

Are we all about Sport? No independent school in the North has the equivalent of our £16m Sports Village. A parent said we are now in a league above the rest. See: www.sportsvillageqe.org

Are we all about superb facilities? No, but we have invested over £80m in superb new teaching facilities and resources in the last 8 years - way more than any other independent school in the North.

Are we all about boarding? No, but no one comes close to the quality of our boarding accommodation. The best in the UK. All bedrooms have private bathroom, air-con, TV, phone & mini-kitchen.

Are we all about day pupils? No, but it is interesting to note our day fees are, on average, over 14% less cost than other local independent schools and our bus service covers a very big local area.

Is it all about Scholarships and Awards? No, but then again who else offers over £3m in Scholarships and Awards every year? Even without any form of Scholarship or Award, sending your child to QE could save you between £3,000 and £7,000 in day fees a year, compared to elsewhere.

All of the above are perhaps the reasons why appreciably more parents have chosen QE this year than last year. “ We were looking for our children to change schools. However in the independent sector this has financial implications. Our problems in this regard were solved by the offer of Day or Boarding Awards (our choice) for both children of First Term Free. They moved, are now happy, and doing very well. QE is growing in size because it is run in a refreshing, modern and much better way. There are plenty of day children.”

Enjoy a 6th Form education at QE and pay no fees!.... Day Award up to £25,000, Boarding Award up to £65,000 If your child is predicted; 9 Grade A star GCSE’s they could be entitled to 100% of the fees 8 A star and 1 A Grade GCSE’s worth up to 85% of the fees 7 A star and 2 A Grade GCSE’s worth up to 70% of the fees 6 A star and 3 A Grade GCSE’s worth up to 50% of the fees

FIRST TERM FREE Day or Boarding Worth up to £9,795 Continues for 2014-15 (a) First Term Free for Years N1 to 8 inclusive, or (b) 50% off First Term’s Fees for Years 9, 10, 12. SPECIAL BOARDING AWARDS Worth up to £75,500 Awarded to outstanding, high achieveing students in categories Academic and/or Sport. Awards based on experience and ability, subject to interview and assessment. (Note a 30% award may be given under this scholarship type for our Elite Sport programmes). FAMILY SIBLING AWARDS Day & Boarding Our discounts are bigger than others, if indeed they even offer them. Brothers & sisters - boarders from 12% - 20%, day pupils 10%.

ES Meet the Chef

Kitchen secrets Have you ever wondered what makes a great chef? Some of the region’s finest tell us what makes them tick. Dean Mitchell Thyme at Bawtry For the last two-and-a-half years, I’ve been serving up contemporary British food with an international twist, which Thyme has become renowned for. A typical day involves running the kitchen, which includes prep, cooking orders, checking stock and generally running things. I enjoy being creative and I get pleasure out of customers enjoying my food. My signature dish is slow-braised Guinness lamb shank with braised red cabbage and celeriac mash. My advice for budding young chefs is to work hard, be imaginative and persevere. 2 Swan Street, Bawtry, DN10 6JQ Tel: 01302 719003 www.thymeatbawtry.com

Dave Wallis The Blacksmiths Arms at Everton The Blacksmiths Arms serves contemporary English pub favourites with a twist. With a rotating menu, we have several signature dishes, but one that particularly sums up our strengths, and is also a big favourite, is braised beef with leeks. I have worked in the catering industry since 1972 and, while I have many food heroes, my favourite current chef is James Martin. Mandy and I have an ambition to retire and run a small bed-andbreakfast in France. The project is underway at present but we are determined to leave The Blacksmiths Arms in strong enough shape so that it can carry on as a family business. Ben Severn Grand St Leger Hotel The menu consists of homemade, fresh and locally sourced produce. We have great steaks and fish and the new grill menu will bring even more quality meat and fish dishes. We also do an incredible Sunday lunch. Everything is made from scratch on site and our matured beef is cooked low and slow to make it as tender as possible. Being a hotel, we are open 24 hours and we have breakfast, lunch and dinner to serve. In between, I prep, clean and visit Doncaster Market to hand-pick the finest, freshest produce for the day. I’ve been at Grand St Leger for three years. I love being creative with food and seeing other people enjoying it or celebrating a special occasion and having us be a part of it. I’d advise aspiring chefs to get as much experience as possible. It’s a stressful and busy working environment and to get thrown in at the deep end could eat you up. Start small, even pot washing, and work your way up. Bennetthorpe, Doncaster, DN2 6AX Tel: 01302 364111 www.grandstleger.com

Asif Ali Aagrah Doncaster

Jamie Stapleton The Cadeby Pub & Restaurant Since the new ownership in May 2013, I have been cooking fresh food with a contemporary but continental twist at The Cadeby. As well as a seasonal restaurant menu, we have an a la carte menu, which changes every few weeks dependent on which game and seafood is available. I love to work within a team of artistic chefs to create wonderful dishes that will keep diners returning. Pan-fried seabass fillet, mushroom puree, trompette mushrooms and grilled salsify with mushroom and apple dressing (pictured) is one of my signature dishes and the owners’ favourite. My advice for aspiring chefs is to work hard, stay focused and learn as much as you can from everybody you work alongside. A chef’s life is hard with long hours but it can also be rewarding as long as you are prepared to put the effort in. If you are passionate, enthusiastic, hard-working and – above all – willing to listen and you believe in your ability you can be a successful chef. Main Street, Cadeby, Doncaster, DN5 7SW Tel: 01709 864009 www.cadebyinn.co.uk

I have been involved with Aagrah since I was a young boy as it’s our family business. I started working straight out of university over ten years ago. I love cooking for people and seeing them enjoy my food gives me a great sense of achievement and satisfaction. However, the most intriguing thing about being a chef is being able to be innovative and to play around with raw ingredients to create new and exciting dishes. My signature dish is our award-winning chicken hyderabadi. This is a very rich dish that is full of distinct tastes and flavours – it’s the perfect blend of spices to tantalise the tastebuds. I would tell any aspiring chefs to gain as much experience as they can, always ask questions and push themselves to break boundaries. It takes years to develop the skills needed to become a chef and you need to prepare yourself for it and be willing to work long and hard. Learn how to use all your tools efficiently and, most importantly, learn all of your ingredients and spices. Once you understand these things, you are on the right path to becoming a true chef. Great North Road,Woodlands, Doncaster, DN6 7RA. Tel: 01302 728888. www.aagrah.com

Thomas Kewley Rossington Hall I have been at Rossington Hall for three months – I’m still the new boy having moved up from Cambridgeshire. We are currently serving a six-choice a la carte menu alongside a seven-course tasting menu. Being a hotel, we also offer a wide-choice banqueting menu for weddings and other large events. I enjoy everything about being a chef equally; the stresses, the glory, the food, the creativity. It’s all passion for me and I love it all, ups and downs. I don’t really have a signature dish but there are some dishes I am known for that constantly change. At some point it was my spiced tofu scotch egg with homemade ketchup and balsamic but now it’s more about my scallops with liquorice risotto, toasted almonds and lemon dressing. The advice that I can give to aspiring chefs is get your head down and work hard, learn as much as you can and power through the tough days because no matter how much it drains you or how difficult it is, if you have the passion it’s the greatest career in the world and there is no better feeling. preparing everything and presenting beautiful food on the special day. I think this is another key factor as to why we are one of the best venues in Doncaster. “I also feel we are very lucky to have the professionalism and dedication of all our staff. Nothing is too much trouble and they always go out of their way to ensure each and every one of our guests enjoys their very special day. It’s all about caring in this business and this not only has to reflect on the day itself, but also from the very start, when couples first come through our doors.” Each year the Grand St Leger Hotel becomes more popular as the choice of wedding venue and their brand new offer is sure to enhance that even further. Open Door up for double awards Local property firm Open Door Auctions has been shortlisted for two prestigious regional business awards – less than three years after being formed around a dining room table. From dozens of entrants, Open Door has been selected as a finalist for Company of the Year in the North Notts Business Awards, an annual awards ceremony for Bassetlaw and Sherwood businesses. Open Door’s co-founder, Graeme Naish has also been shortlisted in the Business Link Magazine East Midlands Fastest 40 Awards in the owner-manager category, alongside six other budding entrepreneurs. Graeme says: “We’re delighted to have been shortlisted for these two prestigious awards. Launching Open Door in the middle of a recession was a challenge but it’s been an incredibly rewarding process and we’ve come a long way.” www.opendoorauctions.co.uk @OpenDoorNews

Sheffield Steelers and Doncaster Knights RUFC first team let off some steam at Bawtry Paintball and Laser Fields. The Steelers got through nearly 1,000 paintballs each in just eight games. They made full use of the smoke grenades and tried to ambush the Predator, who is released at random during the game in a bid to find and eliminate players. The Steelers pledged to return to Bawtry Paintball Fields in March to fire some arrows on the brand-new archery range. Doncaster Knights first team played outdoor laser combat and were rather more boisterous than the seven and eight-year-olds who usually enjoy the activity. They played convoy attack, castle assault, and the latest addition; green zone, featuring one of the Lynx helicopters bought last year from the Tom Cruise movie Edge Of Tomorrow. www.bawtrypaintballfields.co.uk

Fleet team of the year The South Yorkshire Mercedes-Benz team has won the Mercedes-Benz UK Fleet Team of the Year award and the team’s market area fleet manger, Tony Dent, has been recognised with a separate award, Fleet Manager of the Year. Ian Davies, Sheffield Mercedes-Benz head of business says: “This is an absolutely fantastic result and well-deserved recognition of the excellent team we have built up in South Yorkshire. The whole team should be proud of their part in helping us achieve this prestigious award and, of course, a special mention must go to Tony once again for his outstanding performance.”

Tiffany Fashion Show The Tiffany fashion show at the annual ladies luncheon was held at Ye Olde Bell, Barnby Moor, in aid of Doncaster and Bassetlaw NHS Trust End of Life Rooms. Models showcased stunning eveningwear and occasionwear and new spring casual collections. A mention to Sally Richardson, who organised the event,Ye Olde Bell and all the glamorous models.
