Love and sacrifice Northern Ballet come to Cast, Doncaster.
G
et swept away by unrivalled storytelling, dance and live music this month as Northern Ballet begins its new tour of Madame Butterfly with Perpetuum Mobile at Cast, Doncaster from Thursday 21 – Saturday 23 May. Based in Leeds, Northern Ballet have recently been voted Best Company at the 2014 Taglioni European Ballet Awards and are one of the UK’s premier ballet companies, performing throughout the UK as well as overseas. However this is Northern Ballet’s first visit to Doncaster’s new venue with a full-length performance, bringing a programme of world-class ballet right to our doorsteps. Madame Butterfly is choreographed by Artistic Director David Nixon OBE and is one of Northern Ballet’s most popular productions. In this heartbreakingly tragic ballet, audiences will be transported to Japan where the doomed love affair between American Naval Lieutenant, Pinkerton, and his young Japanese bride, Butterfly, begins. Madly in love and prepared to sacrifice everything, Butterfly’s world falls apart when she is betrayed and forced into a dramatic climax. Recreated especially for the new tour, Madame Butterfly is a two-act ballet featuring all new sets and is performed to the famous Puccini score played live by Northern Ballet Sinfonia. The programme also features Perpetuum Mobile (Perpetual Motion), choreographed by Christopher Hampson, Artistic Director of Scottish Ballet. Performed to Bach’s Violin Concerto in E Major, the 17-minute long Perpetuum Mobile provides an excellent introduction to the technical and athletic Recreated especially for the new tour, Madame Butterfly is a two-act ballet featuring all new sets and is performed to the famous Puccini score played live by Northern Ballet Sinfonia

talents of Northern Ballet’s dancers. The piece showcases the incredible strength and prowess of the company and promises to leave audiences breathless. We caught up with Northern Ballet’s Artistic Director David Nixon OBE and asked him about creating one of the Company’s most loved ballets, Madame Butterfly, and why the Company are beginning their new tour right here in Doncaster. “Together the two pieces provide an introduction to the two sides of Northern Ballet showcasing the dancers’ physicality and diversity as well as their superb talents as dance-actors. “Perpetuum Mobile is a beautiful neoclassical work and while it is a contemporary piece, it is based in the classical ballet technique and so is a great work to introduce audiences to the more modern and physical side to our company. “Madame Butterfly is a name that people recognise and the ballet uses the famous Puccini score so hopefully this will attract people. I chose it because it is one of the most popular pieces within Northern Ballet’s repertoire and is a very dramatic narrative production which is where Northern Ballet specialises.” Although a mainstay of the company’s repertoire, and as David himself says, the production portrays the very dramatic narrative that the company specialises in, it may surprise Northern Ballet’s more loyal supporters that the origins of David’s production lay in Canada and not Leeds. “I originally created Madame Butterfly many years ago as a pilot for six dancers when I was with the National Ballet of Canada where my wife Yoko (Ichino, former Prima Ballerina) was also working; it was the first narrative choreographic piece that I created. Later I restaged the production in Germany when I was working there but took the next step in developing Madame Butterfly after I joined BalletMet Columbus in Ohio. I was supposed to be creating something different but it wasn’t working out and then one day, over lunch with Yoko, the Puccini music was playing in the background and I told her that I thought I could choreograph a full-length version of Madame Butterfly if she would dance it. She agreed but said she
would only do it if I would dance it with her. By that point I’d retired as a dancer but at that stage in her career she didn’t feel she could do it with anyone else so I agreed and temporarily came out of retirement to perform it with her. When I first came to Northern Ballet in 2001 I decided to stage Madame Butterfly as one of the first pieces I did with the company and I felt that having Chiaki Nagao (former Northern Ballet Principal Dancer) perform in the role of Butterfly would be a good way to introduce my work to both the company and our audiences. Northern Ballet’s version of Madame Butterfly is the most evolved of all the versions I have created.” But why Doncaster? For a company that frequently visits venues such as the Sheffield Lyceum, Leeds Grand and Sadler’s Wells, London why launch their new tour at a smaller venue such as Cast? Northern Ballet Chief Executive Mark Skipper explains: “The main reasons are firstly to reach a wider audience by going to places that we can’t currently perform at, either because the venue is not big enough to accommodate our largescale productions, or because they are areas where historically the audience numbers have not been strong enough for us. As we’re a Yorkshire-based Company it’s also wonderful to start the new tour in a Yorkshire venue. This is also an opportunity to increase creative possibilities, to be able to add new strands of work to our repertoire whilst creating opportunities for choreographers, designers and composers, etc. So really it’s about reaching more people and giving more creative opportunities.”
Northern Ballet are at Cast, Doncaster from Thursday 21 – Saturday 23 May with Madame Butterfly with Perpetuum Mobile, tickets are £18.50 /£16.50 concessions*. The company also perform the Brothers Grimm story Elves and the Shoemaker for children 3+ on Saturday 23 May, tickets £8.50 adults / £5.50 concessions*. Tickets for both performances are available on 01302 303 959 or castindoncaster.com *Includes 50p per ticket booking fee, not charged if paying by cash.

Inheritance Tax could still threaten your family’s prosperity Dale Murten Wealth Management is inviting readers to discover the simple yet highly effective steps you can take to protect your wealth and stay in control.
M
ore and more people are affected by IHT every year. It used to be a tax that was the preserve of the very wealthy, but escalating property values in the last ten years have put paid to that. For single people, Inheritance Tax applies at the top rate of 40% to assets worth over £325,000. This threshold is known as the nil rate band. For married couples and civil partnerships the threshold is £650,000. But the higher £650,000 limit only applies when assets are passed between spouses and civil partners and this figure reduces if any money is passed onto any of your benefactors during your lifetime. There are also other financial implications to consider, particularly if you are a widow, widower or divorcee.
And with the threshold remaining unchanged by the coalition government and subject to further legislation the
freeze will be extended up to and including the 2017/2018 tax year, more people could get sucked in as the minimum IHT threshold usually increases at a rate equivalent to at least inflation. Dale Murten of Dale Murten Wealth Management, a local Associate Partner Practice of St. James’s Place Wealth Management, is concerned that most people do not understand the implications of IHT. “It’s clear that people are confused by IHT policy and many mistakenly believe they are unlikely to be affected by it,” he said. And he is also concerned about a potentially more serious knock-on effect. “AWill* is vital in helping mitigate IHT,” said Dale. “Without a proper Will, people run the risk of their estate being severely reduced through IHT and also leaving

themselves exposed to the ravages of long term care costs later in life. It’s now more important than ever to seek professional advice and establish how you can protect your hard earned assets.” If you are uncertain about how you stand regarding IHT and would like to know more about how to prevent much of your money falling into the hands of Her Majesty’s Revenue & Customs, or your Local Authority through Long Term Care fees, please contact Dale Murten Wealth Management. T
he year was 1990 and as Thatcher was resigning, Gazza was weeping at the World Cup and World Wide Web founder Tim BernersLee was writing the first ever web browser, something altogether more exciting was happening in Doncaster. That’s right, Eastside was making its debut as the hottest new magazine in South Yorkshire and North Nottinghamshire. Twenty-five years later, we’re bigger and better than
YEARS OF EASTSIDE 1990–2015
ever and proud to be the region’s longest running glossy lifestyle magazine. Of course, there was no better way to celebrate two-and-a-half decades of success than hosting a glitzy bash at the inimitable Crown Hotel in Bawtry – and raising money for a fantastic cause in the process. Eastside’s most glamorous readers and business clients descended upon
the fabulous four-star hotel for an evening of exceptional food, fantastic entertainment and generous charity auctioning. More than £600 was raised on the night for local charity Aurora. Special thanks go to compere Steve Womack – comedian and owner of The Turnpike – who had the guests in stitches; The Torn, who took to the stage for a fantastic live set; and of course The Crown Hotel and all of the staff for hosting a truly fabulous evening with a scrumptious feast.

Reviews of TheTorn’s recent single, Take It ‘It’s riff-laden loveliness.’ Christian Carlisle, BBC Radio Sheffield
T
o say the last 12 months have been a whirlwind for local band The Torn would be quite an understatement. They’ve made countless radio appearances, performed in venues across the country and last year they signed with independent Derby-based record label Sound Hub. Their most recent track, Take It, was recorded with producers Barrington Mole and Tom Carter. It was released in March and has received fantastic reviews from the likes of BBC Radio Sheffield’s Christian Carlisle and Alex Baker, from Kerrang Radio. The band is made up of lead vocalist Damian Dalton Smith, who has appeared on BBC’s The Voice; lead guitarist Nick Berry; bass guitarist Tim ‘Tay’ Taylor and drummer Ben Mullins. Damien, Nick and Tay all met while they were studying music technology at John Leggart College in North Lincolnshire. Ben joined them later and the rest – as they say – is history. The group were originally an indie covers band, but they were extremely keen to write their own songs. Damien used to write poetry in his teens and when he developed his guitar skills he began putting the words to music. He wrote his first song, Wild Girl, about his sister, the actress Sheridan Smith, at the aged of 14. It has a lovely acoustic sound and is something they still play. Nowadays, songwriting is often a combined effort and they take inspiration from different experiences in their lives. After the band had written and rehearsed some of

their own material, The Torn’s manager Doug Downes says it was simply a matter of getting it out to the public. They began playing gigs all over and featuring on local radio stations like BBC Radio Sheffield and Penistone FM, often playing live sets, which proved very successful. “We’ve found it’s a great way to grow our audience,” Doug said. They have played at a whole host of venues, including the Marquee Club in Dublin, the Cavern Club in Liverpool, the O2 Academy in Sheffield and the Purple Turtle in London, as well as many festivals and fundraisers. The band has also worked alongside well-known artists such as John Parr (St Elmo’s Fire),The Buzzcocks, The Specials, The Mystery Jets, Jon Gomm, Reverend and The Makers and Tom and Aziz (Stone Roses). In January, they played at Pride Of The Isle, a black-tie charity event near Doncaster, which was attended by 420 guests and which raised £10,000 for Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice. They’ve already been asked to play again next year. Doug said that the last year had been very hectic. “They are a great bunch of guys, I enjoy being with them. We have received huge support from Lee Pearman and Howard Johnson at Fern Media Doncaster, as well as our roadie Gary Hunt,” he said. Doug’s stepson, Matt Render, designed the band’s
‘Cool guitar tones, jangly edgy indie sound - love the guitar licks, very rock and roll. It feels authentic, which is great!’ Alex Baker, Kerrang Radio website, www.thetorn.co.uk, where all the latest information about the band and new releases can be found, and they now have an official photographer, Jon Matthews. Although The Torn are a guitar-led indie band, they prefer not to be categorised and like to write and record fresh tracks in a variety of genres. Doug says: “This year we are concentrating working on new material, rehearsing and playing lots of local gigs. We’ve also been invited back to BBC Radio Sheffield. And long-term, of course, we’d love to move up to the next level.” Let’s hope that their increasing success long continues – and don’t forget to check out their latest single, Take It. VISIT BAWTRY RACE DAY 16 MAY
Combining glamour, top sporting action and a special appearance by pop legends The Human League, this month’s Visit Bawtry Race Day on Saturday 16 May promises to be social event of the year.
This year’s race sponsors along with Rebecca Burton, commercial manager, and Abby Chandler, marketing manager, (centre) from Doncaster Racecourse
A
s the summer approaches buzzing with social events, now is the time to invest in a fancy new outfit and start thinking about who to bet on, as Bawtry prepares for a packed racing schedule. The upmarket town will be hosting its fourth Visit Bawtry race meeting this month and plans are afoot to ensure the event is as successful and enjoyable as previous years. The annual event, held at Doncaster Racecourse, is a highlight in the town’s social calendar – attracting glamorous ladies and suited men to the Champagne Lawn outside The Old Weighing Room Restaurant and Bar for prime viewing of the races, socialising and enjoying fine food and drink. The race day is organised by the Bawtry Retail Association and sponsored by the town’s retailers, who promote their business and the town of Bawtry while supporting one of Doncaster’s greatest assets – the wonderful race course.

Words: Hannah Pearson
This year’s race card sponsors are The Crown Hotel, Portland Autos, Robinsons of Bawtry, China Rose, Fine & Country, Caviars Restaurant and Wine Bar, Hydro Active Pools & Spas and 31 Market Place Cocktail Bar & Bistro.
The race day will take place on Saturday 16 May, with more than 10,000 guests expected to attend the seven races planned for the evening. Gates open at 3.30pm, with the first race at 5.45pm and the final race at 8.45pm. “We are very much looking forward to our fourth Visit Bawtry race day and to welcoming businesses and their guests to this special occasion in our social event calendar,” said Rebecca Dickenson, chair of the Bawtry Retail Association. “Doncaster Racecourse is a great platform to promote the work that we do and the diverse range of businesses, restaurants and retail that we have in Bawtry.” The race day promises to be an event to remember and, to add even more excitement, the legendary Sheffield band, The Human League, will be performing after racing concludes. With classic hits such as Don’t You Want Me Baby and Together in Electric Dreams

under their belt, the band are sure to get the crowd dancing as evening falls on the Town Moor turf. “The Human League is such an iconic South Yorkshire band and, as an iconic South Yorkshire town, we feel that we are well paired for this evening,” said Rebecca. “They have amassed over 20 million record sales in their career and we are looking forward to the entertainment they will undoubtedly bring to our event. "The race day is expected to sell out so we are urging people to secure their tickets early. It will be another superb way to put Bawtry on the map – educating race goers on what a great place it is to shop, socialise, stay, live and do business.” The Bawtry Retail Association is a member organisation that is dedicated to working with the town’s retailers – including designer clothing boutiques, art galleries, gift shops, home accessories stores and specialist food outlets – to promote Bawtry as a retail and social destination.

Liz at Elizabeth Ann Therapies asks: is depression a curse of the strong?
M
any people suffer from differing degrees of depression. If you suffer, you are not alone and you are much stronger than you think. In my experience, people who suffer from clinical depression usually have a strong moral strength, a strong sense of responsibility, are vulnerable to criticism, have a strong conscience and are people whose self esteem is dependent on the evaluation of others. I would maintain that a person likely to suffer depression is usually a person people would rely on and depend on in a crisis – a safe pair of hands you could trust. Strong famous characters who have suffered from depression include Oliver Cromwell, Abraham Lincoln, Isaac Newton, Winston Churchill and Vincent Van Gogh. Symptoms of depression include loss of sleep, increase or decrease in appetite, low energy, low concentration, lack of patience, loss of sex drive, lack of enthusiasm and feelings of hopelessness. Natural therapies can help depression. Reiki is a healing touch therapy and research has shown that it primarily helps in the reduction of stress, anxiety and depression. Reflexology has been well documented by science to relieve symptoms of depression. It encourages a state of relaxation and, in doing so, releases feel-good hormones (endorphins), which help to reduce the body's stress response.
Q&A: Send your wellbeing questions to Liz @ ElizabethAnn61@live.co.uk One will be chosen and published monthly. Dear Liz I have been suffering depression for around two years now, and have been taking anti-depressants on and off during that time. I am not on them at the moment and would like to try another therapy that might help. What would you recommend? Sylvia, Bawtry Dear Sylvia I would recommend the above mentioned in this article, but also hypnotherapy which can help to provide an effective way to resolve any self-sabotaging thoughts and behaviours, correct patterns of restless sleep, boost low energy and increase your motivation to exercise and eat properly. All the above are availabe with me at The Vanilla Rooms Bawtry. Clinical Hypnotherapist/Complementary Healthcare Practitioner and Weight Management Consultant. ES Beauty DON’T MISS... STOP THE CLOCK Anti-Ageing Open Day Thursday 30 April 10am-8pm Free entry – everyone welcome
Revolutionary new anti-ageing cream smoothes away wrinkles and eyebags to enhance your natural beauty.
A
s skin begins to show more signs of ageing, we find ourselves reaching for readilyavailable creams, lotions and serums that promise the earth. While many of these products undoubtedly help to improve our skin over time by delivering essential moisture, an instant fix is much harder to find. But there is a brand new solution that is already wowing across the Atlantic. Touted as the hottest new product on the anti-ageing market, Instantly Ageless by Jeunesse – available at Elements MediSpa – harnesses the power of a revolutionary antiageing peptide called argireline, to revive the skin and minimise the appearance of fine lines, eye bags and pores for a flawless finish in seconds. The peptide works like Botox – but without the needles – in this potent antiwrinkle microcream to
quickly and effectively diminish the visible signs of ageing. The matte effect enhances the skin’s natural beauty and even erases the appearance of dark circles and puffiness under the eyes. Its lightweight formula is specifically designed to target areas that have lost elasticity with a skin-conditioning complex of minerals that instantly dissolve into the epidermis and even out skin tone. After launching Instantly Ageless in America last November, Jeunesse was voted the fastest growing company in the US. Live demonstrations at the launch sent shockwaves through the audience as imperfections disappeared before their eyes. Unsurprisingly, all units had completely sold out by the end of the event. Don’t miss your opportunity to be one of the first in the UK to get your hands on this wonder cream, available at Elements MediSpa.
Live demonstrations will take place throughout the day at their Stop the Clock event on Thursday 30 April. Become a distributer for Instantly Ageless for £19.77 + VAT. One lump or two? Enjoy a little slice of British tradition... take afternoon tea at one of many offerings in our region.
W
imbledon, Harry Potter, fish and chips, awkward queueing and rainy bank holidays – there are few things more quintessentially British. But one timehonoured tradition – that has soared in popularity over the last few years – is the grand, old institution of afternoon tea. The story goes that afternoon tea as we know it was introduced in Britain by Anna Russell, the seventh Duchess of Bedford, in the early 1840s. As an evening meal was served fashionably late at around 8pm, the duchess developed the habit of having tea in the afternoon and inviting her friends to join her. What started as a mini meal to stem the hunger before dinner – at the time it was usual for people to have only two meals a day – quickly escalated to become a glamorous social event for ladies who climbed the echelons of society. The pause for tea rose in prominence and popularity when Queen Victoria indulged in the ritual, elevating it to the status of a large, formal occasion, known as tea receptions. At the time, these receptions could welcome as many as 200 guests with an open invitation to visit between 4pm and 7pm, during which time guests could come and go as they pleased. Royal approval meant that Victorian
46
socialites quickly followed suit and the practice became highly respectable. Upperclass women would change into long gowns, gloves and hats for afternoon tea, which was usually served in the drawing room. Before long all of fashionable society was sipping tea and nibbling sandwiches in the middle of the afternoon. Despite being much more accessible and affordable nowadays, afternoon tea still retains a feeling of formality and style and offers a throwback to a gentler, more gracious way of living. It is usually enjoyed as an occasional indulgence or to celebrate a special event such as a birthday, Mother’s Day or baby shower with friends. Once confined to the top class of society, afternoon tea can now be enjoyed by the masses in venues ranging from posh hotels to independent tearooms and even garden centres. Although there are no set rules about the content of a traditional afternoon tea, the menu usually comprises of a selection of freshly prepared sandwiches (delicately cut into ‘fingers’), warm scones with clotted cream and jam, a variety of homemade cakes and pastries and a choice of teas, from standard breakfast tea to some rather rare and obscure ones. Teas on offer usually include Assam, a strong, full-bodied tea from India with a distinctive ‘malty’ flavour; the aromatic
Darjeeling, with a hint of almonds and wildflowers; the favoured Earl Grey with its blend of black teas scented with oil of bergamot, named after Charles, second Earl Grey, who was prime minister from 1830 to 1834; and the striking Lapsang Souchong, a Chinese tea fired over smoking pine needles. Occasionally you will see hotels advertising a ‘high tea’. Traditionally, the upper classes would serve a ‘low’ or ‘afternoon’ tea around 4pm, allowing them enough time for a stroll before their evening meal, whereas the middle and lower classes would have a more substantial ‘high’ tea later in the day, in place of dinner. The names derive from the height of the tables on which the meals are served – high tea being served at the dinner table – but today they simply reflect the time of day. Many hotels also offer a champagne afternoon tea for an additional charge, which is a popular choice for special occasions. We Brits do love our booze after all. We may be a far cry from the oldfashioned stereotype of a nation of wellspoken toffs donning top hats and sipping Earl Grey, but afternoon tea is still very much a well-loved pastime in this country. Whether it be an occasional luxury in a posh hotel, a birthday treat at a country house or a welcome sit-down at a café during a hectic day of shopping, it is now easier than ever to enjoy a little slice of British tradition.

ES Eating Out Photography: Chris Wilson
Meat feast! The latest addition to the Bawtry dining scene has certainly identified the recipe for success, writes Chris Wilson.
Y
ou can’t beat the buzz of a new restaurant, and anyone who has visited the latest venue to open in Bawtry recently will know that the initial response has been very positive. We called in at Coleman’s Pizzeria & Steakhouse at the end of a busy first week that has seen owners John and Sarah Coleman rushed off their feet to cope with demand. They already own Thyme in Bawtry and it seems they have a sharp instinct when it comes to giving the people in this part of the world what they want. You already know what’s on the menu – the clue is in the name – so what makes Coleman’s stand out from the others? It isn’t as if there is a shortage of diners offering classic Italian-American style comfort food. Firstly, it’s in a great location in the heart of Bawtry, with a stripped-down, back-tobasics approach when it comes to décor. The plain wooden tables and floors, grey walls and lovely large mirrors make the most of the space; an open kitchen, running along the front of the restaurant, adds a certain buzz to the atmosphere. It certainly seems to appeal to all ages. There were a couple of large family gatherings with three generations enjoying an early dinner when we arrived, while later in the evenings couples and larger grown-up groups kept the cheerful waiting staff on their toes. The menu is designed to appeal to hearty appetites, with burgers and Barnsley chops fighting for attention alongside the steaks and pizzas. We started with nachos and fried

breaded halloumi… as you may have gathered, any diet plans take a backseat when you visit Coleman’s. Nachos are one of my guilty pleasures and this version – loaded with melted cheese and fiery chilli – ticked all boxes. Given the name of the restaurant, our main course choices were pretty straightforward. From the rustic pizza selection, all made and baked to order in the pizza oven, my selection was titled Meat, Meat and More Meat! Subtle it ain’t, but the crispy base and spicy tomato were generously topped with chorizo, pepperoni, Cajun chicken, pancetta and fillet steak. They’d probably raise an eyebrow in Sicily… is this really the way Mama did it back in the old days? Probably not, but in South Yorkshire it works a treat. Meanwhile my companion was getting seriously excited about a tender slab of medium-rare fillet, served with chips and all the trimmings. Only steak and chips, you say? Maybe so, but when the meat is so rich and juicy and the chips are cooked to perfection, crisp on the outside and fluffy within, it is the food of the gods. Portions are definitely on the generous side so not everyone will be demanding to see the dessert menu, but there is a small chalkboard selection availableTwo tortes – one blueberry, one rum and raisin - rounded our evening off nicely. They do the basics very well, service comes with a smile and the setting is very relaxing. It’s early days but all the indications are that Coleman’s Pizzeria & Steakhouse most definitely cuts the mustard.
What we ate: Starters Home made nachos, £5.95 Fried breaded halloumi, tomato & sweet chilli chutney, £6.25 Mains Meat, meat & more meat pizza, £13.95 Fillet steak (9oz), chips, onion rings, mushroom & tomato, £21.95 Diane sauce, £3 Desserts Blueberry torte, £4.50 Rum & raisin torte, £4.50 Drinks Bira Moretti (half) £2.15 Neptune Point Sauvignon Blanc (large glass), £7.25 Mountbridge Shiraz (large glass), £7.25 Colemans Pizzeria & Steakhouse 52 High Street, Bawtry Tel: 01302 711711 www.colemanspizzeriaandsteakhouse.com

The Milk Race rides into town for 2015 World champion cyclists, council leaders, leading representatives from the British dairy industry and Robin Hood all gathered in Nottingham to mark the return of The Milk Race for the third year running. Hone your skills like top pro Danny Willett with the virtual reality simulator at Doncaster Golf Range.
L
ocal golf star Danny Willett headed to his first ever Masters in April leading the Race to Dubai. On his first day in Augusta, he made an impressive 64-foot eagle at the 13th hole and finished the weekend in a very respectable 38th place. It’s little wonder, then, that Doncaster Golf Range – the largest and most established range in Doncaster – is incredibly proud of its association with the talented 27-year-old from Sheffield. Just before his trip to Georgia, Danny found time to promote the area’s very first indoor golf simulator, which has helped him hone his technique since it was introduced at the range last year. The Foresight Sports’ GC2 launch monitor and virtual reality simulator has proved to be a huge success, with hordes of golfers flocking to the driving range to take
their new equipment using the simulator to determine precisely what distances they are achieving with each club. These results are emailed to the recipient so they have a note of them at all times – invaluable when selecting clubs out on the course or during the coaching lessons available at the range. Shoes by Footjoy and clothing by heritage brand Wolsey and J Lindeberg, which expertly combines fashion and sportswear, also line the rails. Are we all about academics? No, but were you aware the Daily Telegraph and The Times both rank QE College as the top most academically successful day and boarding school in the North for A*/ A grades at A Level and equivalent results and our Faculty of Queen Ethelburga’s, the third most academically successful co-educational day and boarding school in the North for A*/ A grades at A Level and equivalent results?
Are we all about Sport? No independent school in the North has the equivalent of our £16m Sports Village. A parent said we are now in a league above the rest. See: www.sportsvillageqe.org
Are we all about superb facilities? No, but we have invested over £80m in superb new teaching facilities and resources in the last 8 years - way more than any other independent school in the North.
Are we all about boarding? No, but no one comes close to the quality of our boarding accommodation. The best in the UK. All bedrooms have private bathroom, air-con, TV, phone & mini-kitchen.
Are we all about day pupils? No, but it is interesting to note our day fees are, on average, over 14% less cost than other local independent schools and our bus service covers a very big local area.
Is it all about Scholarships and Awards? No, but then again who else offers over £3m in Scholarships and Awards every year? Even without any form of Scholarship or Award, sending your child to QE could save you between £3,000 and £7,000 in day fees a year, compared to elsewhere.
All of the above are perhaps the reasons why appreciably more parents have chosen QE this year than last year. “ We were looking for our children to change schools. However in the independent sector this has financial implications. Our problems in this regard were solved by the offer of Day or Boarding Awards (our choice) for both children of First Term Free. They moved, are now happy, and doing very well. QE is growing in size because it is run in a refreshing, modern and much better way. There are plenty of day children.”
Enjoy a 6th Form education at QE and pay no fees!.... Day Award up to £25,000, Boarding Award up to £65,000 If your child is predicted; 9 Grade A star GCSE’s they could be entitled to 100% of the fees 8 A star and 1 A Grade GCSE’s worth up to 85% of the fees 7 A star and 2 A Grade GCSE’s worth up to 70% of the fees 6 A star and 3 A Grade GCSE’s worth up to 50% of the fees

From small class sizes to specialist sports teachers, Sheffield High School has many outstanding features.
T
here are few schools in the region that offer seamless education for girls aged four to 18. Sheffield High School, the long-established independent day school nestling in a beautiful residential area in leafy Broomhill, is however one such place. This award-winning school develops dynamic and open-minded young women, who begin their journey to success in the Infant and Junior school. With small class sizes, individual attention given to each pupil, specialist music and sports teachers, an excellent partnership with parents, supervised care from 7.30am6.15pm, on-site meal preparation, close links with the senior school and a tailor-made curriculum – to name just a few of the school’s many outstanding features – it’s little wonder that Sheffield High pupils grow into such confident, considerate young women. Its membership of the influential Girls’ Day School Trust – the UK’s leading network of independent girls’ schools – gives parents even greater confidence in the school’s ability to provide the very best education for their daughters. Headteacher, Anne Jones, who joined the school 20 years ago, first experienced Sheffield High School as a mum, so she knows exactly what discerning parents expect. “Our aim is for every girl to reach her
www.regionalmagazine.co.uk
potential within an exciting, challenging and inspirational environment where there is always lots to do,” she says. “Girls and boys learn in different ways and here we are able to take an approach that suits our girls perfectly.” Pupils excel in traditionally maleorientated subjects such as ICT, maths and technology as they’re able to fully develop their confidence in these areas. Science is also a high priority and the specialist science zone, designed specifically for primary school learning, ensures the girls always look forward to their weekly two-hour science sessions. The school also provides an outstanding selection of more than 30 extra-curricular activities including sports such as netball and hockey, drumming, string and wind bands, arts and crafts and technology and there’s even a computer coding club. Every member of staff runs at least one of these clubs, so that their broad range of skills is fully utilised.
During free time, there are plenty more opportunities for the girls to expend their energy in the school’s safe and stimulating environment. The newly refurbished playground, which pupils helped to design, boasts a host of exciting and colourful play equipment. Throughout their education, the girls are mentored by senior students, who act as role models for the Infant and Junior School girls. Sixth formers even come back to where their journey began to work with younger students and encourage them to exceed their own expectations. Taking the first steps into a new environment can be a daunting prospect for a young girl. Knowing that she not only has the support of caring, specialist staff but also access to outstanding facilities ensures that each girl settles into school life quickly at Sheffield High – and that she is well supported throughout her education. To find out why Sheffield High School is the right choice for your daughter, call 0114 266 1435 to arrange a visit, or go to www.sheffieldhighschool.org.uk for more information.
