EATING & DRINKING

EATING & DRINKING: A guide FROM TRADITIONAL BRITISH PUBS TO MEDITERRANEAN BISTROS, OUR A-Z GUIDE FEATURES SOME OF THE BEST PLACES TO EAT AND DRINK IN THE DONCASTER AND NORTH NOTTINGHAMSHIRE AREA. BY PHOEBE SEYMOUR.

Bawtry’s Bar & Brasserie Nestled in the heart of town, Bawtry’s Bar & Brasserie is the latest eating, drinking and entertainment experience. Bawtry’s is a busy cafe and brasserie during the day, a vibrant bar and restaurant with private room to hire at night, transforming into a playground for the town’s movers and shakers to enjoy until the early hours. Tantalising evening dishes include everything from pizzas, meats fresh from the grill and dishes with a range of influences from Thai to Mediterranean. What’s more, their bar is fully stocked with a range of ales, lagers, whiskeys and gins. Stripped back wooden tables, antler lightshades, wooden oars placed on the wall, an old-fashioned record player, fire and a feature bar perfectly tie together to create a rustic and contemporary feel. Combined with live music on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, you’ve got the perfect place to wine, dine and soak up the atmosphere. 52 High Street, Bawtry, Doncaster, DN10 6JA Tel: 01302 711271 / www.bawtrysbar.co.uk 14 Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk

BULRUSH The Bulrush bistro overlooks the Barnburgh Lakes and has been open for two years, but it was only when chef, Neil Mayer, joined the team in January that the restaurant was given a Mediterranean twist. Neil has nearly 20 years’ experience and has previously worked at a Michelin star hotel in Italy. Turning his expertise to the Bulrush, he has now launched a new Mediterranean menu. As well as serving up delicious dishes Thursday to Saturday evenings, the bistro serves breakfast from 9am to 11.30am, lunch from 12pm to 4pm Monday to Saturday and Sunday roasts from 12pm to 4pm. The bistro is also home to themed nights, live entertainment nights and a unique afternoon tea for £14.95 (pre-booking required). The venue is also available to hire for private functions including baby showers and funeral teas. Enjoy alfresco dining on the terrace where you can overlook one of three lakes this summer. Barnburgh Lakes, Ludwell Hill, Barnburgh, Doncaster, DN5 7EE Tel: 01709 234663 www.barnburghlakes.co.uk

The Cadeby Pub & Restaurant Tucked away in the spectacular surrounding countryside of Cadeby is one of the area’s best-kept secrets – they have the 2017 Eastside Best Gastro Pub restaurant award to prove it. The Cadeby Pub & Restaurant not only churns out the best in gastro food, but also offers a staggering whisky and gin selection, continental craft beers and local real ales brewed in Dearne Valley at their very own brewery. Internally, the stunning rustic interior with its contemporary splash of style across the décor spills over into its dining terraces and beer gardens. With manicured lawns with plenty of seating and parasols to offer shade, this al fresco paradise offers up relaxation and comfort to those drinkers and diners intent on soaking up some of the Yorkshire sunshine. And if you get hungry, they’ve even got terrace ovens serving up tasty wood-fired pizzas and tapas. Main Street, Cadeby, Doncaster, DN5 7SW Tel: 01709 864009 www.cadebyinn.com

Not content to just be an after-thought once you are done perusing camping equipment, their menu has everything from simple sandwiches, to hearty dishes you would expect to find at a traditional British pub – as well as some amazing cakes and bakes of course. Generously-filled sandwiches, perfect paninis and giant slices of fresh-baked cake at genuine bargain prices make this woodenpanelled café a welcome lunchtime retreat. Another key ingredient at The Classic and Contemporary Coffee Shop is the staff, who are readily on hand to welcome you with a smile and some friendly conversation, no matter how busy the café. When the sun is shining, there are few better places to sit than on the coffee shop’s decking. C&C is slightly off the beaten track, but well worth seeking out. They also offer a to-go service so you can enjoy a fantastic coffee on the move too. Their tapas dishes are specially selected to complement their wines and they only use fresh, locally-sourced ingredients. All orders are cooked on site by their chefs. What’s more their new spring menu starts on 2 May and includes a 25oz rib-eye steak, made to share, served with paprika potatoes, roasted Mediterranean vegetables, roasted garlic, blackened onion and topped with a pink peppercorn butter. Other delicious dishes include their Mediterranean and seafood paellas.

The Old Weighing Room

The Ship @ Bawtry The Ship is an honest, down-to-earth, British pub. With its warm welcome and living room-style décor, you instantly feel right at home. Stained glass windows, classic pub patterned upholstered booths and dark wooden furniture gives The Ship a traditional look, while its forward-thinking menu includes a vegetarian board, as well as all the usual classics from hearty meat dishes to pies. The Wallis family have been at the helm of The Ship for over a decade now. Originally run by Mandy and Dave Wallis, their son Chris took over in November 2015, bringing with him heaps of experience, having previously revived the Blacksmiths Arms at Everton. Though the focus is now more firmly on their food offering, it’s still a great place to pop in for a pint too. There are always four guest cask ales available and the pub are proud past winners of the CAMRA Pub of the Year award. COLOSSEO OFFERS AN AUTHENTIC DINING EXPERIENCE IN THE HEART OF DONCASTER.

Savour the taste of Italy olosseo is a unique and relaxing eatery on a grand scale, offering an impressive choice for lovers of classic and contemporary Italian cuisine. With a fresh new approach to classic delights and firm favourites, it’s attracting customers new and old to the heart of Doncaster. In 2015, Colosseo underwent an impressive refurbishment from a run-down pub to a traditional authentic Italian restaurant. Oozing with charm and cosiness and with a feature brick wall, sculptures and more traditional Roman artwork, Colosseo combines rustic and modern décor with simplicity and ease, alongside an impressive assortment of tempting drinks and food. The contemporary, intimate interior is reminiscent of an Italian home, giving diners a relaxed atmosphere in which to enjoy their meal and, with the open kitchen, guests can experience the thrill of watching mouth-watering dishes being prepared with skill and panache. With an ethos of bringing people together, Colosseo has something to suit all tastes. While waiting for your table, pull up a chair at the bar and enjoy a drink or two. There is a generous range of wines, champagne, spirits, lagers

C

and draft beers as well as an imaginative cocktail menu. Relax and enjoy a memorable meal from a menu that boasts an eclectic mix of starters from pork ribs in a spicy sweet and sour sauce (Costolette di Maiale) to king prawns cooked in peppers, spring onion, chilli, garlic and white wine (Gamberoni alla Portoghese). For those looking for a lighter option, try goat’s cheese cooked with a flat cap mushroom, served on a bed of flat rocket salad, garnished with a balsamic glaze (Insalate Pecorino) or sample the chef ’s special soup of the day. When it comes to main dishes, Colosseo know what they are doing as the experienced

chefs use fresh locally sourced ingredients in all their cooking. If you’re a seafood lover, then sample the Mare alla Ella, made up of black spaghetti and a host of seafood including baby prawns, muscles, pan-fried scallops and king prawns served in a thick tomato garlic sauce. Another favourite is the Pollo con Risotto, a chicken breast on top of risotto cooked with tomato, chilli, piccante sausage, peas and garlic. For something classically simple there is also an impressive selection of home-made pizzas including calzones. Colosseo offers free parking and regularly takes booking for small groups and parties as well as catering for larger functions including weddings, anniversaries, birthdays and leaving parties. The team at Colosseo provides an efficient, friendly service along with top quality food and are accommodating when it comes to dietary requirements. So pull up and seat, soak in the stunning interior and get to work on sampling some of Colosseo’s fantastic offerings. MAKE A MEAL OF IT CELEBRITY CHEFS, THE HAIRY BIKERS AND JEANCHRISTOPHE NOVELLI, WILL BE THE STAR ATTRACTIONS AT THE RETURNING DELICIOUS DONCASTER FOOD FESTIVAL. BY HANNAH SANDERS. fter the success of last year’s event, Delicious Doncaster is returning to the bustling town centre for 2018 and promises to be bigger, tastier and even more exciting. Spanning across four days – 4-7 May – the festival will be placing the food right in the heart of it all with stalls surrounding Doncaster Market and Market Square, and, there’ll be a whole host of entertainment, activities, street food and some exciting names from the culinary world. Doncaster has a great food story; the historic market has been home to one of the finest food markets in the north of England for centuries. The fresh food, fish and meat markets offer shoppers and visitors access to year-round award-winning traders and produce, and ambitious redevelopment plans are now under way with the addition of the Wool Market, complete with its street food stalls and live entertainment stage. This year, one of the UK’s favourite cookery duos, The Hairy Bikers, will be making an appearance in the demonstration kitchen based in Market Square on Saturday. Big-hearted and down-to-earth cooks, Si and Dave will be showing visitors how to cook some of their favourite recipes using ingredients bought at Doncaster Market. They’ll also be taking part in a walking tour of the market and be on hand for meet and greets with fans. Following the success of last year’s appearance, Jean-Christophe Novelli will be returning to the Delicious Doncaster Food and Drink Festival on Sunday 6 May. The Michelin award-winning TV chef will be demonstrating how to prepare some of his mouth-watering dishes using fresh, locallysourced produce. In addition to the celebrity chef line up there will be local producers featuring in the demo kitchen including local chef Michael Price, who not only has a self-proclaimed food obsession but also owns and runs the hugely successful Gourmet Kitchen and Clam and Cork, the newest addition to the food offer in the fish market. There’s also an appearance from the Mount Pleasant Hotel

executive head chef Colin Robson-Wright and, adding a touch of spice, will be Taste of Peru founder Maryan Carrillo with her own recipe sauces loaded with plenty of chilli. The festival isn’t just about food, as Jane Cummings of Olive and Vine Wines will be offering her advice on wine to accompany the celebrity chef dishes as well as hosting a special wine tasting session on Saturday. Further entertainment in the main marquee includes cooking challenges and family fun over the four days of the festival. There’ll also be cooking demonstrations from Doncaster College students and lecturers and the return of the Ready Steady Cook challenge on 4 May. There’s a chance to get involved with the return of The Great Doncaster Bake Off Challenge. Once again members of the public will be asked to enter their baked goods in two categories – Sweet Treats and Savoury Delights – these will be presented and judged in the main marquee on Friday with chance to win some fantastic prizes. Whether you have a sweet tooth or a love of savoury, you can be sure there’s something for everyone. The town centre will be filled with travelling food retailers, local food and

“To have such huge names from the world of food involved really highlights our ambition to make this event an important date in our calendar. We’re aiming to attract not just food lovers from Doncaster, but food lovers from outside the borough and right across the region.”

drink retailers, street foods from around the world and a whole host of artisan producers. And, just outside the main marquee will be a fully stocked merchandise stall where you can stock up on Delicious Doncaster goodies, and get autographs with their celebrity guests. To keep you entertained throughout the four days there will be amazing music and street entertainers from the sublime to the ridiculous. Watch out for a few surprises along

the way as the streets come alive with living statues, performers and lots of fun. Delicious Doncaster is a family event; there is something for all tastes and ages. Councillor Nigel Ball, Cabinet Member for Public Health, Leisure and Culture said: “It’s fantastic to see Delicious Doncaster Food and Drink Festival is bigger and better than ever this year. “The Hairy Bikers are amongst the UK’s favourite chefs, so to have them involved in our festival is a real feather in the cap for Doncaster. We’ve also got Jean-Christophe Novelli returning, who proved to be a real favourite with the crowds when he appeared at last year’s festival. To have such huge names from the world of food involved really highlights our ambition to make this event an important date in our calendar. We’re aiming to attract not just food lovers from Doncaster, but food lovers from outside the borough and right across the region. “There’s going to be plenty on offer throughout the festival weekend for the whole family and it’s also a great way to remind people about our award-winning market. It’s important that people take advantage of the fantastic offer, shop locally and eat locally sourced produce; with the transformation of the Wool Market currently taking place as well, these really are exciting times for Doncaster Market.” For more information and tickets www.visitdoncaster.com. EATING OUT

Psst… wanna know a secret? RACHEL MARTIN KNOWS WHERE TO FIND A HIDDEN GEM – PASS IT ON! ransforming unassuming finds into lively drinking holes isn’t exactly a novel concept. But these days, there's a food revolution going on, and it’s hard to move for restaurants opening in far-flung dwellings. Word of mouth is the only time you’ll hear about these places, so far off the beaten track that their menus are designed to be so good you can’t help but tell people. But, for me, the best kept secrets are the ones hidden in plain sight. Those that become so much a part of the fabric of the region, you return time and time again, safe in the knowledge that the food will be impeccable and the service unparalleled. While the casual visitor could easily miss it, The Cadeby Pub and Restaurant, a beautiful venue tucked away on Main Street, is one of those rare gems, and has hosted those travelling through the hamlet since 1751. But these days, the nomads are all but gone, and it’s the colourful décor and easy-going vibe that invites you in. There’s also a great choice of drinks, including a range of real ales, speciality whiskies and, if gin’s your thing, a bespoke menu dedicated to one of the world’s bestloved spirits. But if you’re not a gin lover, fear not, the Cadeby offers up a range of other drinks. While we looked over the menu, we

T

nibbled on chunky breads served with a selection of cold pressed rapeseed oils from Whites of Cantley (£2.50), and sipped on a dry and refreshing Astoria Galie Prosecco Di Treviso (£6) – a wonderful start to the meal. Both sharers, we couldn’t resist the seafood platter; a feast of hot roasted smoked salmon, baby prawns, smoked mackerel pate, fried squid, crayfish and brown toast (£17). I'm a sucker for prawns, and those, served here with a creamy bloody marie dressing, were firm and full of flavour. As was the delicate crayfish, which was complemented well by the zing of the saffron aioli. For my main course, I opted for the pan fried salmon with smoked pancetta tagliatelle (£17). Perfectly tender, the salmon was gorgeous, with a crispy skin to boot, and the tagliatelle was a highlight; thin layers of freshmade pasta sandwiched in a delicate citrus cream and chilli sauce, which paired nicely with a fruity Virgin mojito. Again, Emily opted for seafood with the monkfish tail (£17.50). The meaty fish stood up well to the spicy kick delivered by the chorizo crust, and the saffron aioli shook up the flavours with a sharp tang. The accompanying beetroot was fresh and perfectly ripe. A Brittains gin (£4.75) and Fever-Tree aromatic tonic (£2) also went down rather well. As if such treats weren’t enough, we shared

a plate of ricotta cheesecake (£6.50) and cinnamon and honey crème brulee (£6.50). The cheesecake was exhibited in a dazzling array of colour, lavished with blueberry compote and a dusting of almond crumble that crackled between your teeth. And the latter, infused with some rather punchy flavours, featured a perfect version of the traditional golden brown sugar crust. We finished the meal with a sense of relief – that the Cadeby is as good as I remember, and that I can continue with my fail-safe recommendation when asked that all important question of where to find somewhere so fantastic to dine, you begin plotting your return whilst paying the bill. EATING OUT

Soak up the sun A TASTE OF SPAIN IN BAWTRY? SIT BACK, RELAX AND THINK OF SUMMER... WRITES PHOEBE SEYMOUR. ursing a large glass of sangria, gazing at a Mediterranean city-scape and listening to the sounds of a Spanish guitar, it’s no wonder I couldn’t help excitedly blurting out to the nearest waiter, “I feel like I’m in Spain!” “Shame about the weather,” he replied, pointing out the window at the rainy scene outside and bringing me firmly back to Bawtry. El Toro opened in The Courtyard in September and is bringing a much needed dose of sunshine to the area. Chic, industrialstyle lighting hang above chairs and booths in all colours of the rainbow and their wide range of cocktails is sure to get anyone in a summer frame of mind. When my partner ordered a frosty, pink strawberry daiquiri (£7.95), the holiday tone was well and truly set, and I didn’t hesitate to order the aforementioned tradicional sangria (250ml, £5.25). If you’re getting garlic bread to start, you may as well go all out. My partner and I couldn’t tackle one each, but were glad we’d upgraded to the pan a la Catalana (£3.95), toasted garlic oil-soaked pieces of bread

N

topped with chunks of tomato and a drizzle of pesto – the perfect way to whet our appetites before our feast arrived. The tapas menu is the best way to sample a bit of everything, but it was still difficult to narrow our choices down to the suggested three dishes each. My brochetta de verduras (£6.95), or vegetable skewers to you and me, were char-grilled, juicy and well matched with the creamy mushroom filled croquetas de boletus (£6.95) and crisp and golden patatas fritas (£3.45) topped with rock salt. My partner chose the brochetta de pollo (£6.25), the chicken skewers marinated in homemade piri-piri sauce, along with the chorizo con sidra (£6.95), presented in a bubbling pot of apple cider-flavoured oil, into which he couldn’t resist dipping his bite-size patatas parisinas (£4.95), baby potatoes topped with fried peppers and onions. Though happy to share our mains, dessert was another story. My partner had gobbled up his coulant de chocolat (£5.25), a chocolate sponge with a warm lava centre and a cool scoop of vanilla ice cream, before I could even get a look-in. But no matter. I was more than content with my authentic churros con

chocolate (£5.25). These deep-fried, sugary, twisted donuts accompanied by a thick and dark chocolate dip were enough to sustain that holiday mood – eat your heart out Spanish churros stands. Still, I look forwarded to returning for El Toro’s first summer, when we can share a jug of sangria and soak up the sun in The Courtyard. EATING OUT

Heaven on a plate A WARM WELCOME AND GREAT FOOD IS A WINNING COMBINATION AT THE CROWN HOTEL, WRITES RACHEL MARTIN. ur bellies ached so much by the time we left, we almost wished we had popped in for a light snack. But what would be the fun in that? Especially when we’d clocked the curiosity-piquing dishes on the newly launched spring/summer menus – we were duty-bound to try as many dishes as we could physically accommodate. A friendly greeting goes a long way in a restaurant, and the one we had from Emma Paczkowski, duty manager at the Crown Hotel, was as welcoming as it gets. The other half and I were welcomed like old friends at the door and told to “sit anywhere”. Only one booth was occupied when we arrived (more groups arrived later), so the two of us made ourselves comfortable at a sizeable table looking out over the low-lit rustic interior, which provided the best spot for a bit of people-watching. There is a hefty and original drinks menu, which makes the most of seasonal bubbles, but staff are just as at ease if you stray away from the list of signature top drops. A lively and fresh Fantinel Prosecco (£6.50) arrived deliciously cold and on the right side of potent, and the Birra Moretti also went down rather well. The new menus, which include an

O

innovative vegan and vegetarian selection, read like food heaven, which made choosing quite a challenge. But luckily, my partner is a sharer, and we were able to narrow it down quickly enough. We chose two starters; French onion soup (£5.95) and mushroom and stilton rarebit (£7.95), and both were superb. The wine-red broth was sweet, mellow and pungent and offset by the Gruyere cheese with its crunchy exterior. The rarebit was a light, yet rich masterpiece. Crab and crayfish linguini was my main course choice. The meaty fish stood up well to the spicy kick delivered by the chilli butter, while lemon shook up the flavours with a sharp tang. And just in case your flavour cravings aren’t satisfied, a side of kale in garlic and chilli butter (£3) delivers a fiery hit. My partner’s plate looked equally pretty; a tower of succulent curried skin-on chicken breast served with spinach Bombay potatoes, mango chutney and a fruity curry sauce that spiced up the dish, both in colour and flavour (£18.95). The aromas were expertly balanced so that each element could be enjoyed, while the tangy chutney enveloped the palate, cocooning the heat of the dish. We went all out with dessert and gleefully

demolished the Crown sharer (£11.95), which featured a melting chocolate brownie, red velvet cake pops, salted caramel shots with caramel popcorn, warm pecan pie and chocolate marshmallow ice-cream - as completely gorgeous as its sounds. It made the ideal end to a memorable meal, as did the toffee banana ice-cream from local dairy kitchen Thaymars of Retford. It’s rare that I return to a restaurant for a second dinner review, but absence certainly makes the heart grow fonder, and revisiting the Crown Hotel proved that hearty food and genuine hospitality will make you fall head over heels all over again. Eastside’s team of reviewers are out and about, but we know our readers are a discerning bunch and we want to give you a bigger say. After we have done the rounds of the region’s finest eateries we’ll be publishing our shortlists of the best, and asking our readers to have their say in each category. We’ll add up the reader votes, put them with our judges’ own views and come up with the best of the best. Sounds a bit like how the voting works on Strictly, doesn’t it? OK, this is Eastside’s version of Strictly Come Dining! That comes later in the year… we’ll be publishing our shortlists in the September issue of Eastside. But you can get involved now by casting your vote for the Eastside Readers’ Choice. EATING OUT

Off the scale

TAKE A BREAK FROM THE NORM AND EXPERIENCE A SUNDAY LUNCH WITH A DIFFERENCE AT THE OLD WEIGHING ROOM. BY HANNAH SANDERS. hink about a Great British Sunday lunch, and the first thing to come to mind is probably a traditional country pub with horse boxes, roaring fires and cosy nooks and crannies. However, bucking this trend The Old Weighing Room at Doncaster Racecourse not only provides the perfect setting for splashing your winnings but the chance to while away an afternoon enjoying a British weekend staple. Retaining the original scales onsite, the restaurant pays tribute to its former life as the jockeys’ weighing room whilst the architectural design features from the 1920s era have been well preserved. With pre-dinner drinks in hand, we took the time to enjoy the panoramic view of the racecourse before being invited to our table. We were given plenty of time to digest our freshly baked bread, with a refreshing glass of prosecco (£4.95), before our starters arrived; for my partner the spiced smoked haddock arancini with tomato and onion relish, which proved both rich and sweet with just the right amount of heat. For myself, a ham hock,

pea and mint terrine served with a mini brioche loaf and apricot chutney. Each ingredient had its own unique taste, but they married together well – the sweetness of the chutney, crispness of the brioche with the refreshing taste of mint. For mains, my partner opted for a hearty dish which was packed full of flavour – roast Yorkshire beef. The meat was delightfully tender, served with potatoes, red wine jus, crisp Yorkshire pudding, a generous helping of seasonal vegetables and creamed potato. I opted for something lighter – seared cod served with smoked bacon, spring greens, new potatoes and a vermouth sauce. The cod was flaky, with a delicious crunchy skin, and the rick indulgent sauce and fresh vegetables provided a delicious combination of flavours. For dessert I had the Yorkshire rhubarb tarte tatin served with warm custard and vanilla and ginger ice cream; perfectly caramelised with biscuity pastry, the tatin was a treat. Meanwhile, my partner made short work of his homemade chocolate tartlet, rich butterscotch sauce and topped with a

hazelnut praline which added another dimension of indulgence to the overall taste. Both desserts rounded off an excellent afternoon. If you’re looking for one-of-a-kind dining experience The Old Weighing Room is off the scale. Amanda Horsman

Dazzling in purple

AS A ‘MUM WHO BEAT CANCER’, AMANDA HORSMAN IS NOW SAYING THANK YOU BY ATTEMPTING TO RAISE £10,000 FOR WESTON PARK CANCER CHARITY. manda Horsman of Warmsworth, Doncaster was told she had advanced head and neck cancer just days before Christmas 2016, but made the brave decision to keep her cancer diagnosis from those closest to her – including her young children, Franchesca, Kristian and Holly – until the new year, for fear the festive season would be her last. Now, she has become one of only 20 people in the world, and one of three in Sheffield, to have taken part in a cutting-edge clinical trial at Weston Park Hospital, looking to see if a new drug known as MTL-005 can affect chemotherapy by making cancerous tumour cells more sensitive to radiation therapy. Amanda first noticed a lump in the left side of her neck, but had believed it was a cyst, and says taking part in the Morex trial, which involves patients receiving a one-off dose of the drug a week before chemotherapy, was her way of “drawing positivity out of something so negative, and doing something to help the next generation.” An MRI scan on 23 December 2016 confirmed the diagnosis of secondary and primary cancer in the neck and upwards, however, taking part in the study gave Amanda renewed hope. “Research from the trial will improve the quality of cancer services across the board, and result in better outcomes for all patients, not just those taking part in clinical trials, so I immediately said yes. If no-one got involved, there would be no way we could help others get treatment quicker, or support people

A

through the last months of their life.” Amanda’s treatment ended in March 2017 and she was ecstatic to be finally given the all-clear in autumn last year. “Weston Park Hospital is an amazing place – from the cleaners to the nurses and consultants, everyone’s been outstanding. Nobody ever made me feel like I was asking a daft question, or wasting their time. Everything about the trial was really positive, and now my youngest tells everyone – my mum beat cancer!” To thank the team, Amanda is now attempting to raise £10,000 for Weston Park Cancer Charity, and is staging several events, including a charity ball on 23 June and a sponsored family walk at the end of September, which is to be held around Doncaster Rovers football ground. Amanda is also looking forward to dazzling in purple at the Weston Park Cancer Charity Race Evening on 1 June at Doncaster Racecourse, where spectators will be offered an opportunity to enjoy a thrilling combination of top-class racing and entertainment. Doncaster Racecourse is generously offering over 2,000 patients of Weston Park Hospital an opportunity to enjoy an evening at the races free of charge. Meanwhile, the Cancer Charity has a limited number of heavily discounted County Stand tickets available at just £5 (usually priced £25). To find out more contact Weston Park Cancer Charity on 0114 226 5370 or visit www.westonpark.org.uk

Thanks to funding from Weston Park Cancer Charity, researchers are able to: Improve access to clinical trials In 2000 just four per cent of patients at Weston Park Hospital were able to participate in a clinical trial as part of their treatment. By 2016 this had increased to 20 per cent of patients. Invest in the future of oncology The Cancer Charity is currently funding 20 innovative research projects, including projects to improve treatments for breast, bone, skin, lung and prostate cancer.

The future is Doncaster WE LOOK AT KEY DEVELOPMENTS TAKING PLACE IN THE TOWN AND SOME OF THE BIGGEST PROJECTS IN THE PIPELINE. BY RACHEL MARTIN AND ISABELLE OSBORNE.

oncaster is an ambitious borough – it is impossible not to have noticed the scale of construction that has taken place over the last year, but with so much happening, it can be hard to keep up. Here are some of the key developments and multi-million pound projects already underway and in the pipeline.

D

Rossington Hall Golf Course The Rossington Hall Golf Developments scheme will see the picturesque site transformed into a world class golf complex and resort under the European Tour Destinations banner. The development will see the creation of an 18-hole championship course designed by former Ryder Cup and European Tour star Neil Coles, which is in line to host at least three European Tour tournaments within the next ten years. Welcome to Yorkshire is also supporting the project, which will also see the development of a nine-hole club course, clubhouse, leisure facilities and 500 homes, in addition to public footpaths, cycle routes and bridleways. The Corn Exchange Restoration Doncaster’s famous Corn Exchange, at the heart of the markets, will be restored back to its former glory thanks to a major improvement programme. Full repairs will be made to the weather worn masonry and the roof of the Grade II* listed building, where Elgar conducted the London Symphony Orchestra in 1909, and Doncaster Council has initially set aside £1million for the works. Work has now begun on a full restoration scheme and permanent scaffolding and a cloak will cover the 19th century building for up to two years. Market Place, Doncaster, DN1 1NF Tel: 01302 862480

iPORT DONCASTER Following the success of the Great Yorkshire Way, Doncaster has generated an estimated 1,000 jobs over the past two years, and the introduction of iPort in 2017 has created more employment opportunities since. This multimodal inland port offers buildto-suit warehousing opportunities, combined with a range of speculatively developed units, and has a dedicated multimodal rail freight terminal on site, for connections across the rest of the UK and into Europe. Benefitting from direct access to the M18, and situated less than five miles from Robin Hood Airport, worldwide brands including Amazon and Ceva Logistics are already based within the iPort, further supporting the development of Doncaster as a major logistics platform. The iPort also contains an academy, to further increase recruitment and training, and looking forward, iPort developers, Verdio will be investing in two more buildings. The £400million iPort is nearing completion and will create up to 5,000 jobs once fully operational.

Hall Gate & Silver Street Under £1.4million proposals which have been outlined to town centre businesses, Silver Street and Hall Gate could see major changes in a bid to increase their use during the daytime and early evening. The scheme is currently at the ‘concept stage’ and is to be discussed with businesses and the public before it is finalised, potentially offering wider pavements, trees, modern lighting and more pavement cafes. Funding for the scheme has already been agreed through the Sheffield City Region Investment Fund, which also includes the redevelopment of the areas around Doncaster railway station and Doncaster market.

The Urban Centre Masterplan The Urban Centre Masterplan will build on previous successes in Doncaster and sets out a new framework for the development of the centre maximising its existing assets. Through creating dedicated zones, the Masterplan will transform the way Doncaster looks, and the way residents and businesses use the ‘city core’, with the masterplan acting as a prospectus for investment and change. Whilst the focus of the masterplan is the ‘city core’, the benefits of future growth will extend much further, supporting local communities and forming part of a wider network for the borough and beyond.

NATIONAL COLLEGE FOR HIGH SPEED RAIL With plans well underway for the UK’s second high speed rail line, the industry is already beginning to forge new paths, requiring new skills and employees from a wider range of backgrounds than ever before. The National College for High Speed Rail (NCHSR), which took on its first cohort of apprentices in October 2017 – its first full entry will enrol in September 2018 – is the third of five government-backed national colleges to fully open. The NCHSR, which has campuses in Birmingham and Doncaster, received £40million in government funding to construct new buildings and equipment, with a further £12million provided by the Sheffield City Region combined authority, and the Greater Birmingham and Solihull local enterprise partnership. At its heart lies a workshop, which can be seen from almost every part of the college, where students can work on a Eurostar power car, which once carried more than 160 million passengers between the UK and mainland Europe. Step outside and students get to work on a 700m length of rail track and complete set of overhead powerlines. Carolina Way, Doncaster, DN4 5PN / Tel: 0330 120 0375 / www.nchsr.ac.uk

Doncaster Wool Market The new design for the famous and historic Wool Market has been unveiled as plans to transform Doncaster Market continue at pace. More than £3million of Sheffield City Region SCRIF funding has been secured by Doncaster Council to revamp the jewel in the crown of the town centre. The aim is to transform the market area into a vibrant and bustling location all week long and into the evenings, and recent research indicated residents and visitors to the borough backed the plans and would become advocates recommending the markets to their friends and family. As part of the plans, the renovated Wool Market will become an attractive and welcoming destination providing a new and enhanced offer to retail traders and customers. The makeover will also enable the market to host more events, encouraging more people into the area. Discussions have been held with the current market traders to share the new designs and provide them with information about the progress of the market development. The final stall configuration is still to be determined, however over the past few months the plans have been further developed and enhanced to ensure the market is modernised and fit for the 21st century through this redevelopment. Market Place, Doncaster, DN1 1NF 44 Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk

Plans to develop Doncaster train station are now formally underway, including moving the car park to the old Royal Mail Sorting Office site, meaning the existing car parking space could be transformed and opened up into an attractive public space. There will be a dedicated taxi rank, new car parking and easier drop off facilities, to help ensure easier flow of traffic around the station as well as easier pedestrian access to the town centre, and there will also be better access for cyclists and secure cycle parking. To ensure that commuters are protected from all weathers, Virgin Trains, which manages the station, plans to invest £500,000 to create a contemporary glass canopy on the front of the station building. And the redevelopment of the station forecourt is being carried out in partnership with Virgin Trains and South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive (SYPTE). In February 2017 the council secured £7million of Sheffield City Region funding to transform the station forecourt, which will in turn attract investment and jobs into the region. Stephanie Lonyon bought a two-bedroom Ashton home and loves its convenient location

Happy home-owners

BUYERS HAVE BEEN QUICK TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE GABLES’ HELP TO BUY SCHEME – AS WELL AS ITS ENVIABLE LOCATION. use Developments’ sought-after The Gables scheme in Doncaster is proving a hit with first-time buyers, who are making the most of the governmentbacked Help to Buy equity loan scheme to purchase a brand new, low maintenance home in a town centre location, with just a five per cent deposit. First-time buyers, Dan Cosgrove (25) and Sarah Baker (27) have had their eye on the development since the now sold out first phase started on site back in 2013, but had to wait until the second phase of homes launched to be in the financial position to step on the property ladder. They have now put down roots in a two-bed Boswell home, purchased using Help to Buy. Both originally from Doncaster, Dan, a recruiter, and teacher Sarah each work only a few miles from their new two-bedroom home. The

Boswell features a separate ground floor kitchen and open plan living/dining space that opens directly onto a private outside area, and two first-floor double bedrooms, each with their own en-suite. Dan commented: “We love how the house is laid out; it makes the best use of the available space. It’s also brilliant being in a really quiet area, but so close to the town centre – we can easily walk to all the shops and bars.” Quantity surveyor Stephanie Lonyon (29) has also moved to the development, purchasing a two-bedroom, three-storey Ashton home using Help to Buy. Stephanie spends her working week on construction sites across the UK, from Yorkshire to Lincolnshire, and her weekends playing hockey. It was vital for her to find somewhere that combined good transport links across the north, with a central location offering easy access to amenities, so that she can leave the car at home at weekends. Originally from Cheshire, Stephanie discovered The Gables on Rightmove and decided that its location – no more than an hour and a half from any of her work sites –

made it the perfect place to make the leap onto the property ladder. “It’s so easy to get to places,” says Stephanie. “With the amount of driving I do during the week, I enjoy the fact that everything is so close on a weekend. I play hockey on a Saturday and the pitches are a ten-minute walk away, and then if I want to go out for dinner or to the shops, it is short five-minute stroll into the town centre. It really allows me to have a proper rest from all the car journeys.” Situated in the heart of Doncaster’s growing cultural quarter, The Gables is a tenminute walk from Doncaster train station, and has a host of great amenities including Cast theatre on its doorstep. One-bedroom homes start from £106,000 and two-bedroom homes from £129,950. Buyers can book a tour of a brand new Ashton show home – a three-storey, twobedroom home that’s available from just £129,950.You can also find out more about the government backed Help to Buy scheme which is available for both first-time buyers as well as homeowners looking to move, by contacting the sales team at sales@thegablesdoncaster.co.uk or by calling 01302 378989. LEGAL Making a will is important. Without one, the government can decide who will receive your money and possessions after you die. This can cause many difficulties for your surviving family and relatives at an already distressing time, so making a will can help alleviate some of this pressure. Jonathan Goodwin is a solicitor and partner in the wills, probate and trusts department at Bridge Sanderson Munro. He advises older clients on wills, Lasting Powers of Attorney and Court of Protection Applications, to protect his clients’ assets. Most people know they should have a will, but many forget about protecting their best interests if they were no longer able to manage their own affairs in their lifetime. Examples of this include being hospitalised or put into residential care, making it difficult for you to look after your personal finances or welfare. You can protect yourself by making a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA). The LPA is a legal document in which you can appoint another person or persons as attorney(s) to act on your behalf in relation to your financial affairs and/or personal welfare.

For more information about wills, Lasting Powers of Attorney and more, visit www.bsmlaw.co.uk or contact Jonathan on 01302 321 621.

FINANCIAL

HOUSING

When it comes to financially planning for your retirement, the amount of money you will need depends on the individual – after all, we’re all different. “It completely depends on your lifestyle and what you’re wanting to achieve,” agrees Nathan Trowbridge, a certified financial planner at Thomas Heald Ltd. “My aim is to inspire you to start living the life you want, by providing you with the clarity and confidence to pursue your goals without the fear of running out of money.” Nathan has worked in the financial services sector since 1998. He spends most of his time as a recommended adviser for several well-established professional partners, such as accountancy and solicitors’ practices, as well as providing a high level of service to his private clients. “We’re not a typical financial advice company,” he continues. “The traditional model isn’t geared towards helping people get the most out of life, so our aim is to do things differently and actually find out about our clients and what’s truly important to them. My clients embrace retirement with no regrets – but that’s because we plan.” Nathan starts off with a meeting over coffee, where you can discuss your individual goals and aspirations, and find out more about how his service could benefit you. Your initial no obligation meeting is free of charge and free of jargon.

When elderly relatives need specialised nursing or dementia care away from their own home, choosing a residential home can be a difficult decision. Recognising that this is a challenging process for families, and for the prospective resident, Trust Care Ltd – a leading provider of care homes in the South Yorkshire region – makes huge investments in its staff and their training to ensure the highest levels of care and comfort are provided, alleviating the difficulties that come with choosing a care home. Training manager Janet May and her team are quite different in their approach to training, adopting a face-to-face programme which has seen staff at each home become highly skilled, confident and, most importantly, drive a real team spirit. This has had a significant impact for residents with the homes being happy places where they are well cared for, safe and content. Since its inception in 2015, over 400 courses well above industry requirements, have been delivered to the team and all 260 staff receive training in a classroom environment at their care home promoting staff engagement and shared learning experiences.

To book an appointment, call the Thomas Heald Bawtry office on 01302 966125, or send Nathan an email at nathan.trowbridge@thomasheald.co.uk.

New life-saving community defibrillators come to town Bawtry already has a number of defibrillators in the town, many of which have been funded by fundraising from the annual St Leger Preview evening hosted by the Crown Hotel. Bawtry Retail Association is delighted that these funds have also been used to purchase the town’s first community defibrillator, which is housed in a cabinet and installed to the outside of the Bawtry Community Library, giving 24-hour access. In April, community defibrillator training took place by the Yorkshire Ambulance Service at the Crown Hotel to show people how to use this life-saving piece of equipment. Defibrillation within three minutes of sudden cardiac arrest increases the chances of survival by 35 per cent and used within one minute of collapse raises the survival to 75 per cent. Other defibrillators in Bawtry are located at: • China Rose • Crown Hotel • Memorial Sports Ground • Bawtry Dental Practice (Swan Street) • Mayflower Primary School • Bawtry Medical Centre 64 Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk

BRA prepare for new data protection laws At this month’s Bawtry Retail Association members meeting, Andrew Bevan, partner at Jones & Co Solicitors, presented highlights from the new General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and gave members an action plan and ‘12 steps to take now’ checklist to help them prepare and ensure compliancy. GDPR is a new EU law that will come into effect on 25 May 2018 to replace the current Data Protection Act. It’s the biggest overhaul of data protection legislation for over 25 years, and will introduce new requirements for how organisations process personal data.

They also provide travel training, and in some cases, funding for taxis to work. Every client who has been through one of these training programs in the past year, has secured full time jobs in supportive workplaces and is enjoying work life. Founder Jenny Calder was inspired to set up the organisation after her son, Adrian, who has dyslexia, autism and a learning disability, struggled to find employment. “We are so proud to showcase firsthand the ability within disability,” said Jenny. “We want to help reduce social isolation and improve health for those with a hidden disability and to provide businesses with employees who want to work, achieve and have a purpose in life, but just need that extra support to become a valuable team member. “Businesses are now choosing us for recruitment, particularly in the catering industry.” If you have a learning or social disability or you are a forward thinking employer, contact Jenny Candler on 07802 325616 or email jenny@employmentsupport.org.
