Are we all about academics? No, but were you aware the Daily Telegraph ranks QE College as the top most academically successful day and boarding school in the North for A*/ A grades at A Level and equivalent results and our Faculty of Queen Ethelburga’s, the second most academically successful co-educational day and boarding school in the North for A*/ A grades at A Level and equivalent results?

Are we all about Sport? No independent school in the North has the equivalent of our £30m Sports Village. A parent said we are now in a league above the rest. See: www.qesportsvillage.org

Are we all about superb facilities? No, but we have invested over £100m in superb new teaching facilities and resources in the last 8 years - way more than any other independent school in the North.

EASTSIDE RESTAURANT AWARDS

EASTSIDE RESTAURANT AWARDS

Photography by Mark Rodgers

CREAM OF THE CROP ANTICIPATION WAS HIGH AS THE BRIGHTEST AND BEST OF THE REGION’S RESTAURANT TRADE GATHERED TO FIND OUT WHO THE WINNERS WERE IN THE EASTSIDE RESTAURANT AWARDS 2017. nce again, the best of the best turned out for the biggest and most prestigious event on the restaurant calendar – the 2017 Eastside Restaurant Awards. As representatives from the region’s finest eating establishments gathered at Doncaster Racecourse, it was clear that the local dining scene continues to go from strength to strength. Now firmly established as the ultimate showcase of the breath of diverse gastronomy across Doncaster, Rotherham and North Nottinghamshire, the Eastside Restaurant Awards are a chance to showcase just what makes eating out at these local eateries a true pleasure. Greeted with a chilled glass of prosecco,

our guests gathered to toast those establishments that have really reached the heights in cooking and serving food for a very demanding public, and to find out who had won the top prizes. The judges had an enjoyable time assessing this years’ nominees, but as usual, choosing the winners was no mean feat. Judging covered every aspect of the restaurant experience, from the quality of the food and service, to ambience and cleanliness, and it was only after much deliberation and debate that the final list of winners were chosen. Swiping this year’s ultimate prize as Eastside Restaurant of the Year was OTTO Bar & Kitchen in Sprotbrough. Having already picked up the award for Best Mediterranean, OTTO had impressed our

judges with their buzzing atmosphere, live jazz, dangerously eclectic menu and wonderfully crisp squid - in fact, one judge was heard to say it’s the best he’d ever had. OTTO had been shortlisted for the main prize, along with two other outstanding restaurants from the past 12 months - Cadeby Pub & Restaurant in Cadeby and Miller & Carter in Doncaster. The competition was tougher than ever and choosing the winners was challenging. Luckily, help was hand. Returning as guest judge for the second year was Celebrity MasterChef semi-finalist and actor Chris Walker. Best known for wearing a policeman’s uniform in his role as Rob Hollins in the BBC series Doctors, Chis is a top notch chef at home, and his perceptive

EASTSIDE RESTAURANT AWARDS

observations during and after each meal certainly proved that he took his role as judge very seriously. “I was delighted to be asked to return as guest judge for the second year, and I have to say, judging three such diverse places was very difficult.” He said. “It’s not a straightforward race - things can go wrong. “I was looking for food that made me excited, and what excites me is when I leave a restaurant and think: how did they do that? That’s the true test for me. “Each and every one of the nominees needs to give themselves a round of applause, because what they do is give very many people a lot of joy and happiness. And for that alone they should be celebrated. “Eastside shines a wonderful spotlight on the very best of the regions restaurateurs, and that’s incredibly important. When I was a kid, being brought up in a now ex-mining village, eating out meant you went to the fish and chip shop. But things have changed dramatically now. “Eating out at exceptional establishments is a part of our culture. And I know, they’re not saving lives, but I tell you what, if these restaurants shut down for a week, there’d be riots on the streets.” Our second guest judge was marketing manager for United Carpets, Will Hickman, whose biggest passion away from work is dining out. His knowledge and enthusiasm

were a huge help as the judges discussed all aspects of the dining experience, from food, wine and service, to front of house, value for money and atmosphere. The evening was co-hosted by Eastside managing editor, Chris Wilson and publishing manager Terri Moore. Terri was joined by Eastside sales executive Rebecca Hume in presenting the winners with their awards. Both ladies looked stunning in dresses from Chique of Doncaster, who we’d like to thank for making this glittering event even more glamorous - if such a thing were possible. Once the awards had been dished out and the plates had been cleared, it was time to hit the dancefloor with some top tunes courtesy of DJ Paul of Eyeball Entertainments until the early hours. Though they may have been catching their breath after dealing with thousands of hungry and thirsty punters during the recent St Leger Festival, Doncaster Racecourse provided a fantastic setting for our little get-together. Special thanks go to Jackie Maskey from White Rose Occasions for dressing the room so beautifully, and to two top chefs – Michael Lesson from the Old Weighing Room and Dan White from Doncaster Racecourse who joined forces to come up with a mouthwatering menu. EASTSIDE RESTAURANT AWARDS DOUBLE WINNERS

Restaurant of the Year and Best Mediterranean OTTO BAR & KITCHEN Scooping up Best Mediterranean and Restaurant of the Year was Otto Bar & Kitchen. A mecca for both coffee and wine, it is a unique and casual haunt. Oozing with charm and cosiness, this split-level hangout combines elegantly wooden walls, rustic lights and rugged wine barrel tables, alongside an impressive assortment of tempting drinks and food. Boasting an ethos that is all about bringing people together, Otto really does serve up something to suit all tastes. “It’s absolutely amazing to have won,” said manager Kirsty Cayton. “It just shows that all our hard-work has paid off. “Often, the time and effort people put in is overshadowed, and events like this celebrate all that hard work. Working in this industry isn’t just go to work and come home. It’s your life, so it’s nice to praise everyone.” The whole team at OTTO Bar & Kitchen were delighted with their double success. “We were so surprised to win,” said managing director, Ruth Somers. “All the other people that we were up against are brilliant, so it’s a pretty amazing achievement. “The whole team works really hard and we are always trying to improve and better ourselves - and it’s paid off. “Everyone works incredibly hard, individually and also as a team - we are very much a family at OTTO’s,” added bar supervisor Albion Goga. “We’d just like to thank every single member of staff, as they have all played a part in us winning this award.

Best Grill & Steakhouse MILLER AND CARTER Miller and Carter bring a real taste of Lone Star state to Doncaster, combining exceptional food, drinks, great service and a friendly atmosphere. They’ve adopted the Texan tradition of serving a lettuce wedge topped with sauce before your steak, and, with an innovative cocktail menu it makes for a great destination for parties and celebrations. “It’s amazing to have won - we’ve only been open about seven months,” said general manager Sam Ellis. “I think the secret to our success is that what we offer is simple - great steak and hospitality. ‘From the field to the fork’ is our philosophy, meaning our steak is second to none, and we have a great team who know the products.” Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk 21

EASTSIDE RESTAURANT AWARDS

Best of Asia AAGRAH There are now 13 Aagrah restaurants spread across the county, each run by family members, and the Doncaster branch - which celebrated its 21st anniversary this year - is going from strength to strength. With its unwavering commitment to delivering outstanding Indian cuisine, and customer service to match, it’s little wonder this thriving enterprise is winning over the region’s curry lovers. “It’s brilliant to have won again.” said manager Asif Ali. “At Aagrah we concentrate on the quality of food and service we provide, and I think when working in the hospitality industry, that is the most important thing. It really is nice to be recognised.”

Best Modern British THE SEPARATIST INN Last year, The Separatist Inn took home the award for Best Pub, and since then, they’ve continued to make a huge impact on the hospitality scene - going from strength to strength in quality, service and ambiance. With an eclectic, modern menu, served in relaxed, contemporary surroundings, it offers everything from comfort food to weird and wonderful desserts. Alongside fabulous cocktails that bring out your inner Hollywood star. “We’re really chuffed to be honest, as we all put in a lot of hard work,” said head chef Billy Frost. “The Eastside awards are really important to us, and the region, as they recognise the very best of the dining scene.” “They really help champion the dedication of everyone in the industry.” added sous chef, Oliver Introna.

Best Gastro Pub THE CADEBY PUB & RESTAURANT Tucked away in the spectacular surrounding countryside of Cadeby, The Cadeby Pub and Restaurant is one of the area’s best kept secrets. Not only does this hidden gem serve up some of the best in gastro fare combining interesting flavours and textures but they also offer a staggering whisky and gin selection, as well as local real ales and continental craft beers. “It’s great to have won, and it is an accolade to all the hard-work we do,” said general manager Ian Allgood. “Events like the Eastside Restaurant Awards really do help put Doncaster on the map, and they bring together all the local businesses within the hospitality industry for a fantastic celebration.” 22 Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk

EASTSIDE RESTAURANT AWARDS

Best Café/Light Bite THE CLASSIC & CONTEMPORARY COFFEE SHOP When thinking of somewhere to eat lunch, a caravan showroom might be the last place you would consider. But Classic & Contemporary Coffee Shop is a destination in its own right, with a menu that serves up everything from simple sandwiches to hearty dishes that would be expected of a traditional pub, alongside some amazing cakes and bakes, of course. “We really didn’t expect to win,” said proprietor, Sonya Nokes. “We were up against some stiff competition and we’re absolutely thrilled. “I started the business 12 years ago, and realised it was something unique, so it was great when we were able to bring it to a coffee shop. I think our cakes is what make us stand out, because they’re all homemade.” “We have a great menu, pride ourselves on our customer service, and work hard to look after our customers - both old and new.” added manager Lynette Davies.

Best Traditional Pub THE SHIP @ BAWTRY The Ship @ Bawtry has been run by the Wallis family for over a decade - it was under the management of Mandy and Dave Wallis until November 2015, but has since been taken over by their son Chris, who previously ran the Blacksmiths Arms at Everton. The Ship is a ‘good ol’fashioned pub’, serving up a vast selection of homemade food, drinks, and, most importantly, a welcoming and friendly atmosphere. “It feels fantastic to win,” said owner Chris Wallis. “The whole team at The Ship works incredibly hard and I think the secret to our success is determination, hard-work, team-work and great staff.”

Best Hotel Restaurant THE CROWN HOTEL This Bawtry-based hotel and restaurant has become a popular haunt for those looking for tantalising dishes that bring together some of the best seasonal ingredients. And with its harmonious mix of country house and cosmopolitan-chic décor, along with visually vibrant dishes which celebrate, where possible, local seasonal produce and unexpected flavour combos, it’s easy to forget you’re in a hotel at all. Which might make it a little easier to leave if you don’t have a room booked. “Team Crown are absolutely thrilled to have picked up the Eastside Hotel Restaurant of the Year Award,” said managing director, Craig Dowie. “The kitchen and restaurant team are such a great bunch and work so hard to ensure that each and every customer leaves happy – whether it’s a wedding, conference, party or corporate traveller. Winning this award means so much to us all.” Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk 23

Best Contemporary THE COUNTING HOU23 Doncaster’s newest wine bar opened its doors in March this year, with a heavy focus on all things wooden including repurposed tables, industrial stools and hanging light bulbs, which perfectly tie together an old world and contemporary feel. They serve everything from a full English to steak sandwiches, burgers, pizza and impressive homemade cakes. “It feels amazing to win.” said front of house manager Katie Moore. “We’ve been open for six months now, and have put in a lot of hard-work and team-work, so it’s an incredible achievement. We’d like to thank the whole team at The Counting Hou23, and most importantly, our customers.”

Best Newcomer THE TOWNHOUSE BAR & RESTAURANT The Town House Bar and Restaurant has recently transformed itself from a traditional tea room to a stylish bar and restaurant. Making for an ideal lunchtime retreat, the menu boasts an extensive selection of dishes, ranging from a classic fillet steak to a selection of gourmet sandwiches and salads, alongside a specials board. “It feels awesome to have won,” Says sous chef, Patrick Jackson. “I’m the only one at our place that’s never won an award, and it’s the first thing I’ve won professionally, so for me in particular it feels brilliant.” “We’ve gone from a tiny tea room serving light bites to a restaurant serving three courses, all made with fresh ingredients,” added head chef Daniel Bolus. “It’s been hard work, but the end result has made it all worth it.”

Reader’s Choice RIOJA Dining at Rioja is a relaxed, colourful experience. No rush, no pretence - just great, flavoursome food for sharing. Owner Lee Needham is passionate about his food, serving classic dishes with a twist, and despite being the ‘new kid on the block’, it has already become a firm favourite in the region. The team were extremely proud to be chosen as the Readers’ Choice: “It feels phenomenal to have won,” said Lee. “Readers’ Choice, that’s the big one - we really didn’t expect to win. “I think we have a great atmosphere, especially on the weekend, and of course our food is great too. We are still obviously very new to the industry, but we’ve just opened an outdoor area and the restaurant is getting busier all the time, so we are going to continue making our mark in year two.” Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk 25

At Zara's Restaurant in Tickhill, Doncaster we put a great deal of thought into our Indian Restaurant and Takeaway Menu. We like to combine Indian traditional classics with contemporary favourites and use only authentic ingredients in our recipes. The result is a wide selection of delicious Indian food which we hope you will enjoy time and again. "Superb! My family and I eat out alot, I'm a big fan of Indian food and have tried many Indian restaurants in the area. The meal we had at Zara's was first class and the best ever!!! Beautifully presented and gorgeous flavours - we'll be back again and would definately recommend Zara's Restaurant to anyone wanting to taste the finest Indian food in the area!" – Mr Edwards, Bawtry

"Great food, Great Service, Great atmosphere. All I can say is Great!"

"Anyone wanting a beautiful Indian meal - you must try eating here. I've now tried most dishes on the menu, each and every one as been top notch. I especially love their lamb dishes. Relexed restaurant environment and friendly staff all help to make for a great night out every time."

"A big thankyou to all the staff at Zara's. I have special dietry requirements and have always had a lot of trouble when it comes to ordering from a restaurant menu - not at Zara's. I was able (for the first time in years) to choose anything, all food is hand prepared from scratch, with fresh ingredients and cooked to my individual dietry requirements. It made the whole experience very relaxing and uncomplictaed and to top it all off - the mean was perfect. Many, many thanks."

“I’m Chintana, most people know me as Ton. I grew up in a village not far from the city of Ratchuburi in Thailand. I started cooking at a young age and used to cook for all my family. Mai Dang was my first restaurant I opened when I was 18 years old. Six Years later, I met my husband and we decided to start a family in Doncaster. Then this gave me the opportunity to open the first Thai Restaurant in Doncaster, The Bangkok Thai Restaurant. Ten years of running a successful business, we wanted to expand and we decided to open the Bangkok Royal Elephant. A NEW CARPET COULD BE THE PERFECT GIFT FOR YOUR HOME THIS CHRISTMAS.

Deck the halls e can no longer avoid the C word – it is coming, and it is coming up quickly. Why, Christmas of course. It will be here in a heartbeat so now is the perfect time to get planning. United Carpets & Beds, have compiled the top three signs you may need to consider purchasing a new carpet to get your home fully ready for the festive season, and make it sparkle.

W

indelible stain 1 The You’ve tried it all, there is no cleaning

product or tip that has not been attempted but to no avail, the stain remains loud and proud. Why not try a stain-resistant number when purchasing your next carpet? It can help keep your flooring looking new and stain-free for longer. Hole-y moly

2 Fraying edges, tears, well-worn patches are all to be expected over time and especially within the higher-footfall areas of your home such as stairs and hallways, but they are tricky to hide and can be a trip hazard. United Carpets & Beds recommend selecting a hardier finish for the busier areas 44 Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk

in your home and have ensured it is clearly marked on their site which carpets work best where. that smell? 3 What’s Funky odours are not always easy to

remove or hide, whether it be as a result of your four-legged friend or a vacuum that has seen better days, the fibres of your carpet sometimes just want to hold on to the scent. The new carpet smell is definitely a much nicer option. Don’t worry if now is not quite the right time for new flooring however, United Carpets & Beds also have lots of hacks on helping to keep your existing carpets looking as good as new – take a look at their Faceook page (@UnitedCarpetsandBeds) to find out more! Their top three carpet cleaning ingredients, which will also come in handy for any Christmas spills, are:

Vinegar

So good they’ve nicknamed it SuperVinegar – say goodbye to muddy footprints, pet messes or food spills. The sooner you get to the stain the easier it comes out. Baking soda

Great for numerous stains, it is also amazing at removing scents from the fibres. Pour it liberally where needed. Leave overnight, vacuum it up, and voila, the smell be gone. For new flooring in time for Christmas check out www.unitedcarpetsandbeds.com and order today, or visit your local United Carpets & Beds store. INTERVIEW

Born to be wild RAY MEARS WILL BE REVEALING THE SECRET TO SURVIVAL – AND MUCH MORE – AS PART OF HIS UPCOMING TOUR IN DONCASTER THIS MONTH. BY HANNAH SANDERS.

ver the past two decades, Ray Mears has become a world-renowned expert on the subject of bushcraft and survival. His various programmes including World of Survival and Tracks, have reached out and touched the hearts of many because of his down-to-earth approach, love for the subject and the empathy and respect he shows to indigenous people, their culture and nature. Along with releasing a new TV series – Australian Wilderness – focusing on remote areas of the country and their incredible landscapes and animals, Ray Mears is also embarking on a UK Tour – Born to Go Wild, taking place from October to November 2017. Here he is talking about his career highlights,

O

tour and TV series along with tips for those interested in learning the Bushcraft skills.

For someone unaware of bushcraft, how would you describe it?

Where did your interest in bushcraft come from?

It’s a knowledge of nature that enables you to travel safely in places and gain enrichment from nature because you know more about the world around you.

I grew up with a love of the woods and developed an interest in nature, wildlife and camping out quickly. However, I didn’t have any equipment, so I was lucky to be introduced to bushcraft at an early age. My judo teacher had been behind the lines in Burma during the Second World War and he was one of my mentors. The most important thing he taught me wasn’t actually the skills of bushcraft but a way of learning. You find a subject, take it apart, understand how it works, put it back together and see if you still agree with it. If not then see if you can find a better way, but otherwise accept it for what it is – it’s a process I’ve always followed. How did your career begin?

When I began my career it was difficult as no one knew what I was talking about. I started doing TV as a way of broadening my audience and showing everyone what bushcraft is, as I wanted to create an opportunity for people to learn the skills. 48 Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk

During your new TV series, did you come across any dangerous animals?

We had one moment, which wasn’t filmed, where we saw a snake trying to swallow a frog. At first it was thought to be a grass snake but after closer inspection you could see it had been bitten. The snake was small, young and brown and it turned out to be the second most dangerous in terms of venom – so I was glad no one picked it up. What are three things that are a necessity to take with you into the wild?

A sense of humour, common sense and a knowledge or curiosity to know more about nature. What was your favourite area of the series to visit?

We visited lots of places including Kangaroo Island, Flinders, Walpole and Cataract but the

INTERVIEW

“The snake was small, young and brown and it turned out to be the second most dangerous in terms of venom – so I was glad no one picked it up.” Kakadu environment was my favourite. The first time we went to that part of Australia, I spent a month living with Aboriginal people who taught me how to live in traditional way, so I’ve always felt a strong kingship with that area. Having worked with Aborigines before, what did you take away from the experience?

In 1996 we made a film in a series called World of Survival, where I worked with a man who was one of the last people to live a Stone Age life. It was incredible to work with him and his knowledge and experience of the land and how to take care of it was just overwhelming. It was an amazing experience, and one that won’t be able to be recreated because that generation have all gone.

including fire lighting, and will be demonstrating some methods. I’ll also be showing some clips from Australia, whilst talking about the importance of understanding nature, including how to take care and look after it, which is something I learnt from Aboriginal peoples, whose law states it’s their main responsibility to look after the land. It’s going to be a really fun event and great for the whole family. What is your advice for anyone wanting to learn bushcraft?

The first thing is to read as much as possible, be patient and determined. If they get an inkling of something, or have a question in their mind that says ‘why is the done?’ or ‘why was that tool used?’ never let go until you have an answer. These are very important and more often than not lead somewhere new.

What will your tour include?

Next year I’ll have been teaching bushcraft for 35 years, so I’ll be focusing on key skills

The tour is coming to Doncaster CAST on 2 November. For more information or to book tickets visit www.raymears.com

EMBRACE THE FESTIVE SPIRIT AT BAWTRY’S ANNUAL CHRISTMASTIME EVENT ON SUNDAY 26 NOVEMBER, 12-6PM. t will soon be the most wonderful time of the year again – the annual Bawtry Christmas Time Event. Taking place on Sunday 26 November, between 12noon and 6pm, this exciting festive event will feature plenty of family fun including a traditional carousel (half price between 12noon and 1pm), fairground rides and over 40 stalls, which will cluster in the Market Place, Dower House Square, the Church Hall, Smiths David House Car Park and The Courtyard, selling unique gifts alongside a selection of mouth-watering festive foods. There will also be lots of live entertainment on the main stage in the Market Place (opposite Ziniz), while Father Christmas, Polar Bear Santa and characters from GP Princesses will all be making appearances throughout the town, before the unveiling of the spectacular Womack’s Christmas Window. Meanwhile, many more local businesses are embracing the Christmas spirit with a whole host of offers and contributions to the running of the event. Once again, the magnificent 20ft Christmas tree in Market Place will be sponsored by China Rose Bawtry, who will also be inviting everyone to buy a wooden heart tree decoration for just £2. Write a message to a loved one and hang it on the Remembrance Tree in their car park. All

proceeds will be split between PACT (Parents’ Association of Children with Tumours and Leukaemia) at Sheffield Children’s Hospital and the British Heart Foundation. Gray Rooms will be barbecuing and offering pie and peas throughout the afternoon, while Viva of Bawtry will be offering free mince pies and mulled wine, plus ten per cent off everything in the boutique. The Ziniz restaurant and bar will be open as normal, along with a special outdoor Bombay bar on the front street, offering a selection of gin cocktails in their Bombay winter wonderland. The White Hart will be offering children rides on antler and red-nosed ponies from Horse World on Tickhill Road and will also have a fun fair in the car park, as well as

offering delicious steak and venison from their food van. Pop along to The Market Bar on the Market Place and try one of their special festive cocktails. The Bawtry Retail Association would like to take this opportunity to give a huge thanks to Bawtry Town Council for once again sponsoring the carousel and contributing towards the security, as well as offering thanks to sponsors One Call Insurance, Wilfreda Beehive and Hudson’s Yard, who will be providing a park and ride service, and Solutions for Cleaning, who will be providing litter pickers. The free park and ride bus service will be available from Hudson’s Yard on Doncaster Road and car parking will also be available at

the Bawtry Memorial Sports Ground. And when the event is over at 6pm, remember that all the bars and restaurants will be open for you to continue your festivities. EASTSIDE’S BEST DRESSED LADAY

Peaches Brooke THE VOTES FLOODED IN AND THERE WAS ONE CLEAR WINNER... MS MILLINGTON’S WHITE AND NUDE ST LEGER ENSEMBLE PROVED TO BE QUITE THE HEAD-TURNER. he William Hill St Leger Festival might be over for another year, but there is one very important announcement still to be made – the title of Eastside’s Best Dressed Lady 2017. There might have been plenty racing action lined up for Ladies Day, but all eyes were on the spectators, and in the run up to the event, we asked Eastside fashionistas from around the region to

T

send in photos of themselves in their showstopping Leger outfits, purchased at local boutiques. We revealed our finalists in October’s magazine – which was no mean feat – and since then, votes have been flooding in on Facebook, Twitter and email. We are thrilled to announce the winner of the Eastside Best Dressed Lady 2017 is Brooke Millington, 21, from Doncaster. Brooke wore a stunning white and nude dress from Da Vinci Boutique in Barnby Dun, teamed with black heels, a black clutch and a black and nude fascinator. Brooke prides herself on her stylish attire, but says she was “shocked to be announced the overall winner.” She studies sport and exercise at The University Centre in Scunthorpe , but follows Da Vinci intently

BROOKE’S PRIZES:

Brooke’s winning ensemble

• £50 Crown Hotel voucher • A trip for two to Truffle Lodge Twilight Spa • Two County Enclosure tickets for any race meeting after the Leger in 2017 • Kérastase box set from Saks Doncaster • A voucher to spend at ladies fashion boutique, Chique.

on Instagram, and having previously worn a number of their dresses, knew it was the perfect place to find her eye-catching outfit. “I’m from Doncaster, but I now live and study in Scunthorpe, so while I’m away I like to keep track of all Da Vinci’s fabulous designs on Instagram and Facebook. “I wore a stunning peach Da Vinci dress to the St Leger 2016, and I instantly fell in love. So I just knew I would find another really classy and elegant ensemble.” Bethan Morse, owner of Da Vinci, which has been open since 2012, says the boutique is popular with race-goers, with lots of women visiting the shop in the run up to the Leger. “It’s fantastic that Brooke has won,” says Bethan. “She purchased last year’s Ledger attire from Da Vinci and always looks stunning. “A number of ladies dressed by ourselves have entered over the past few years and I’ve got all their pictures on the wall. It feels so good to have won and know that we’re as good as all the other boutiques.” As well as racewear, Da Vinci aim to provide for different ages, sizes and budgets, and also provide for many different occasions. Stocking over 15 different brands. “It’s good to buy from local, independent boutiques like ours as we all work so hard and put in so much effort to compete with the big high street stores. “When you win an award like this, it really shows the hard work has paid off.” Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk 69

Whenever we are stressed, we will wake at unusual hours in the night usually from 2am to 4am and then find trouble getting back to sleep. Does this feel familiar? How can we stop that internal alarm going off? We would possibly get out of bed and start to pace around, instead try doing a mini-meditation. Lie on your back, take a few relaxed breaths, then imagine an object like a candle or a flower...something simple. Once you’ve got this in focus, let your thoughts come and go naturally if they intrude, just refocus on your chosen image. This helps you stay in the moment and releases worries and stress. Continue for a few minutes until you feel calmer and sleepy. If that’s not cutting it for you? Why not try another method giving yourself a worry time every day. A set 15 minutes every day and don’t worry any other times, if you start to worry, stop and think: I’ll save that for my worry time at eg. 7pm – 15 minutes of worry time. Then when you reach your worry time, the original worry is probably diminished or disappeared completely.

Dear Sara

We know that a chattering brain is tiring, meditation is a good way of calming the mind. Give the above meditation a try, or yoga is another good way of helping anxiety, certain breathing techniques and also hypnotherapy. Try using the worry time method to relax, you’ll be amazed at how it works. All of the above are available with me @ The Vanilla Rooms Bawtry. within the Crown Hotel ! " ! " ! ! “Our 25th show was absolutely fabulous and our thanks go to everyone who played a part in making it an extra special evening once again,” said Russell Jones from Robinsons of Bawtry. “Without the support and generosity of our loyal customers, friends and staff, this would not be possible and we are incredibly proud of what we achieve together.” The event, which was created by the boutique’s original owner Tony Robinson in memory of his first wife who he lost to cancer, has raised over £300,000 for Yorkshire Cancer Research during its 25-year history. “Thanks go to our sponsors Alexander Calder Financial Challenge and also Elaine and Howard Huntridge, Nigel Oxby at Elite and China Rose Bawtry for their support in helping create this Robinsons legacy,” added Russell. “Without them this would not be possible and for that we are grateful. The longevity of this event is testament to the support they gave Tony and now us as we continue to

generate funds for vital research into cancer in the Yorkshire region.” Sally Crerar, head of community fundraising at Yorkshire Cancer Research, said: “We’d like to thank everyone who supported this year’s fashion show. It’s always a fantastic evening and we’re grateful to all those who help to make it a success. The money raised will go towards improving the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cancer in Yorkshire.” Robinsons is located at 2 South Parade, Bawtry, Doncaster, DN10 6JH and the team can be contacted on 01302 711477 or by visiting www.robinsonsofbawtry.com.

IN BRIEF

Well done Rosh!

World’s biggest selling sculptor comes to Limited 2 Art One of the world’s most coveted bronze sculptors, Tim Cotterill – aka ‘The Frogman’ – wowed visitors at leading South Yorkshire gallery, Limited 2 Art in Bawtry, when he showcased his stunning collection of show frogs including rare, sold out and new limited editions only available in the UK. Tim spent the evening chatting with fans, discussing his work and signing all frogs purchased on the evening simply with the word ‘enjoy’. “It was lovely to see the gallery filled with people who genuinely love Tim’s work and we had a mix of those discovering his work for the first time and those adding to their already extensive collections,” said Ruth Worsman of Limited 2 Art. “His work is truly unique and very special, and to be able to hear what inspires him and how he works first hand was a memorable evening for us all.” Tim, who was born in Leicester, but relocated to California, received gifts from the gallery team to remind him of home. Tim reciprocated by creating a simply amazing piece of work to go on the gallery’s infamous Stairs of Fame, a homage to all artists who have visited the gallery in its new premises. Limited 2 Art’s upcoming Meet the Artist events including Margaret Clarkson, whose pictures have featured in many national magazines and books, on Saturday 4 November from 11am to 4pm and one of the UK’s most beloved contemporary artists Paul Horton on Saturday 18 November from 12noon to 3pm. Further information about the collections exhibited by Limited 2 Art can be found by visiting www.limited2art.com or by calling 01302 711189. Rosh Singh has a learning disability, and like many others, he faced knock back after knock back trying to find paid work. Both Rosh and his family very nearly lost hope, but then Rosh was referred to Employment Support by DMBC (Doncaster Council) and went on to receive specialist Job Coach training and support at the Mayflower Bar and Eatery (Austerfield). L-R: Carly Fairchild manager, Mark English head chef and Job coaching support helped Rosh Singh commis chef at Ziniz Restaurant Bawtry Rosh with his confidence, speed, skills and accuracy. Rosh then started his first ever paid work as a commis chef at Ziniz Restaurant in Bawtry, where he still works today. Ziniz are a shining example of a supportive employer when it comes to disability inclusion. Not only have they provided Rosh with a work opportunity, they have been open and forthcoming by researching and requesting additional support. They treat and respect Rosh as they would any other staff member and are continually helping Rosh to progress and learn new skills. With his can-do attitude and determination, Rosh is an inspiration. He is someone who defines himself by his ability not his disability. Jenny Candler, founder and managing director of Employment Support and her team would like to thank Carly and Mark for their positive outlook and support with disability inclusion, Alex and his team at Ziniz, Rob and his team at The Mayflower, Debbie and her team at Talent Match, Gini and her team at DMBC, John and the team at Employment Support, and above all, a massive well done to Rosh!

Welcome to the future of Bawtry

Popular interiors store moves to Bawtry Down Quilt House is now open in Dower House Square, Bawtry. Previously based at Queens Road in Doncaster, this interiors shop has lots to offer to those who take pride in their home. They offer an interior styling service, as well as a curtain, blind and pelmet making service with many designer fabrics available. In store, they have home accessories and decorative antiques to give your home the finishing touch or even treat that special someone this Christmas. Find Down Quilt House at Dower House Square, Bawtry, DN10 6LS or call 01302 481400.

If you care about the future of Bawtry, come to a public exhibition at the Bawtry Methodist Church Hall on Wednesday 13 December, between 2pm and 9pm. In February 2015, Bawtry Town Council agreed that a Neighbourhood Plan be made. A Neighbourhood Plan shifts the balance of power between a local community and their Planning Authority. That means DMBC will remain the decision making body, but will have to take much greater account of what the people of Bawtry think. A group, comprising of people from the Town Council, the Residents’ Group and the Bawtry Retail Association, have been working on the plan for over two years by asking people how they want Bawtry to develop in the future. This is the first formal stage of making the plan, which will culminate in a public referendum. Their vision is to “create a plan for Bawtry that will enable the town to develop into a thriving and vibrant market town, proud of its heritage, safe and enriching for its residents, welcoming to visitors and fit and prepared for the challenges of the 21st century.” How issues including new housing, businesses, roads and traffic are managed in the future will determine the character and prosperity of the town. Bawtry isn’t just for adults and the group look forward to hearing from children and teenagers too. Come to the exhibition and have your say.
