Cold comfort BRING SOME WARMTH INTO YOUR HOME THIS WINTER, SCANDI-STYLE. BY RHIANA HUGHES.
s the sun starts to set on our unusually hot summer, you’re probably thinking of ways to warm up your home for the winter. Just like us Brits, Scandinavians see plenty of light in the summer months but very little in the winter, and it’s this that inspires the way they design their homes. Incorporating clean lines and a blend of textures, contrasts and soft hues, the Scandinavians turn what could seem cold modern furniture into warm and inviting pieces of décor. So whether you want to submit to the winter chill and wrap up by the fire or whether you’re still clinging onto summer and want to bring the outdoors in, you’re sure to find plenty here to get your home Scandi-styled.

EASTSIDE RESTAURANT AWARDS
The great and the glamorous YOU EASTSIDERS KNOW HOW TO CELEBRATE... THE REGION’S RESTAURANT TRADE GATHERED TO FIND OUT WHO THE BIG WINNERS WERE IN OUR RESTAURANT OF THE YEAR AWARDS 2018.
EASTSIDE RESTAURANT AWARDS
he Oscars, the BAFTAs, the Golden Globes... they’ve all captured the headlines. But all those glittering ceremonies with their A-list stars and attention-grabbing celebs can’t hold a candle to 2018’s most memorable night out. That’s right folks, the Eastside Restaurant Awards was truly this year’s most hotly-anticipated – and, of course, most glamorous – bash. Well, what more would you expect from the shining stars of South Yorkshire’s dining scene? This is an event that has grown in size and stature since we staged our first award ceremony back in 2013. And this year we definitely had a venue to match the occasion. The Earl of Doncaster, the landmark art decostyle Doncaster hotel, did us proud with a room setting fit for a glamorous Hollywood movie. The Earl’s trademark 1920s style – fabulous mirrors and glitter balls, splashes of crimson, silver and gold and that stunning black and white ceiling – made sure our little event had the wow factor from the moment the first guests arrived for a complimentary glass of fizz. The table settings added to the sense of occasion with white peacock-style feathers pointing skywards. And the 180-plus guests who packed the room certainly dressed to kill, with the gentlemen looking sharp in black tie and the ladies of Eastside land proving once again that whether they choose a demure or a daring look, they know how to step into the highest of heels, sashay into a room and put on the style for a big night out. Competition was keen of course, but we were delighted with how many of the local restaurants and cafes entered into the spirit of the occasion. It was fantastic to see all of the nominees together in one room, celebrating the superb quality of eateries to be found in our region. There were 13 awards in total, ranging from Best of Asia to Best Afternoon Tea. On the following pages we’ll give you the lowdown on all the winners. But of course, the entire occasion was geared towards the unveiling of the big winners of our premium award – the Eastside Restaurant of the Year for 2018. And this year’s top prize went to The Cadeby Pub & Restaurant. This lovingly restored pub wowed the judges with its beautiful décor, relaxed setting, attentive friendly service and a fabulous menu packed with delicious gastro-pub style delights. The Cadeby were double winners on the night, scooping our Best Pub Restaurant award as well as our main prize. Judging by the massive round of applause that greeted the announcement – made by our guest judge Michael Price, who founded the Clam & Cork seafood restaurant in Doncaster Fish Market and also runs the Gourmet Dining Club from his own home – it was a popular and richly deserved award. This year’s judging process was different, as we gave Eastside readers a bigger say in the final outcome. The shortlists for all our categories were thrown open to readers via a special online Facebook poll and they responded in their thousands.
T
We added up the reader votes, put them along with our own judges’ views, and came up with a list of winners who can definitely take time out to bask in the glory of their awards, because they have won over the local public as well as the Eastside judges. When it came to judging the Eastside Restaurant of the Year it was the three venues that scored highest among the Eastside staff reviewers – managing editor Chris Wilson and the feature writers – that formed the shortlist. Along with The Cadeby, the two other venues in the running for Eastside Restaurant of the Year were The Sun Inn – another dining pub, this time in Everton – and Rioja, the modern tapas and wine bar in Woodfield Plantation, Doncaster. A panel of three judges – Michael Price, Chris Wilson and guest reader Elizabeth Freedman – ate together (and anonymously we hope!) at each restaurant before making their final decisions. Elizabeth is a cordon bleu and cordon vert cook. Both our guest judges are born-and-bred locals, they are both huge supporters of the Doncaster dining scene and they tackled their roles as Eastside judges with the perfect blend of enthusiasm and a keen eye for all the details, from food and wine to ambience and service, that make up a great restaurant experience. It’s fair to say it was a tough decision, as the judges enjoyed some fine quality food and wine in each venue. But in the end all agreed that The Cadeby, a beautifully restored pub with a contemporary style and a menu with an emphasis on pub classics with a modern twist, was a worthy winner. When it fell to Michael Price to present the Restaurant of the Year award, he had words of encouragement for everyone involved in the local dining scene. “This is an incredible time for everyone involved in restaurants in Yorkshire,” he said. “The industry is booming, it’s growing much faster in the north of England than the south. “We have some seriously brilliant restaurants in our region, and some superb local suppliers providing fantastic ingredients. We ate some fantastic food in all three of the shortlisted venues and enjoyed then all.” The evening was hosted by Eastside publishing manager Terri Moore and managing editor Chris Wilson. Terri was looking stunning in a dress from Chique of Doncaster, who we’d like to thank for adding even more glamour to a dazzling evening. Thanks also to Dining Diva, the Doncaster catering Equipment Company, for sponsoring the Best Newcomer award, which was won by The Sun Inn at Everton. This was certainly one of those nights that nobody wanted to end. As soon as the awards were over, DJ Paul of Eyeball Entertainment made sure the dancefloor was packed into the small hours with a winning selection of top tunes. All in all it was a fantastic evening, perhaps the best Eastside Restaurant Awards yet, and certainly an occasion that left us all buzzling with excitement about what the future holds for the local restaurant scene. Roll on next year...

EASTSIDE RESTAURANT AWARDS
Restaurant of the Year & Best Pub/Restaurant The Cadeby Pub and Restaurant “Two years in a row!” Reigning Best Pub/Restaurant, The Cadeby were once considered a hidden gem, but their wins at the Eastside Restaurant Awards have confirmed that they’re now well and truly on the map. Taking home both Best Pub/Restaurant and the coveted Eastside Restaurant of the Year awards, The Cadeby Pub and Restaurant had plenty to celebrate. “I think we all work really hard, which I know
Readers’ Choice Fish Bits Fish Bits were over the moon when it was announced that they were this year’s winners of the Eastside Readers’ Choice Award. “I can’t believe it! This is the one he really wanted to win,” owner Joanna Xenofontos told us with her husband and co-owner John. “It’s always been about word of mouth. We like to provide good service, we’ve tried to put a twist on it, so it’s not just fish and chips.” John wanted to give special thanks to his parents, saying “we took it on from them and made it better as best we can. Our staff, our customers and everyone who voted for us. We really appreciate it.”
everybody else does, but it’s just keeping at it in a really tough market,” said general manager Ian Allgood. “I’m very proud of everyone in the team. “We’ve all been here for quite a long time and it’s taken really hard work to get us to where we are now. “It’s a real challenge, and it’s a really hard industry to be in as well, and I think you’ve got to have a good team around you and it’s the dedication from everybody that gets you to where you are.”
EASTSIDE RESTAURANT AWARDS
Best Mediterranean Restaurant Rioja Still on a high from their Readers’ Choice win in 2017, the Rioja team were thrilled to be taking home yet another Eastside Restaurant Award. Passionate about their food, drink and of course the service they provide, the team were extremely proud to be named Best Mediterranean Restaurant. “All the hard work has paid off. We put our heart and soul into it and we feel very blessed to get another award out of it,” said head chef Harry Bunn. “The whole team at Rioja, we’ve all got the same goal at mind, we’ve all got our hearts in it. It’s something we’re all very passionate about.” “We have to thank the ‘rents, Mark and Jackie, the owners. They’ve made it all possible for us,” added Rioja owner Lee Needham.
Best Café/Light Bite The Old Butchers Tucked away in the pretty village of Fishlake, The Old Butchers have been serving up a winning formula of hearty breakfasts, mid-morning coffee and cake, lunches, light bites and sharing boards. A real hub of the village, it’s no wonder they’ve gained the support of their customers and walked away with the Best Café/Light Bite Award. “It just means the world to us,” said co-owner Claire Holling. “We live and breathe our business. We love it and we want to make it work, and that’s what makes it extra special,” added co-owner Louise McCormack. “It really is all about the service. We absolutely love everyone that comes into our place and we want to make them feel extra special.”
Best Restaurant in a Venue The Old Weighing Room They might be situated at Doncaster Racecourse, but it doesn’t have to be race day for you to pop down to The Old Weighing Room for a quality British meal made up of proper Yorkshire ingredients. Priding themselves on their customer service, the team were overjoyed to be recognised for the hard work they put in at the restaurant. “The atmosphere is relaxed, it’s not full on, in your face service. People can just come and enjoy themselves,” said The Old Weighing Room’s Michael Purvis. The team were full of confidence and pride in themselves and their win. “We might have only won one this year, but we’re going to smash it next year!”
EASTSIDE RESTAURANT AWARDS
Best Bar and Grill & Best in Bawtry Coleman’s Pizzeria & Steakhouse Coleman’s Pizzeria & Steakhouse definitely didn’t leave the night empty-handed, coming away with both the Best Bar and Grill and Best in Bawtry Awards. Speaking of their Best Bar and Grill win, owner John Coleman said: “We’ve been up for it for a few years, but we always lost out. Two years ago we won Readers’ Choice and we were happy with that, but it was great to win this, this year. “We’re the original steakhouse in Doncaster. Others have come along but we’ve been here for four years now.” When asked how they felt to take home not one, but two awards, it was clear from their faces just how pleased they were with their accomplishments. “Bawtry is quite a specialist place so it feels nice to be recognised. We do try hard so the awards are welldeserved,” added manager Matthew Merritt.
Best of Asia Aagrah Taking home the Best of Asia Award once again was Aagrah. Standing 13 restaurants strong, Aagrah are going from strength to strength and continuing to win people over with their outstanding Indian cuisine. The team boil their successes down to the “good quality food and good customer service” they provide each and every person that walks through their doors. “We treat our customers like they’re a part of our family. We try to create a family-orientated environment where everybody feels very welcome,” said manager Asif Ali. “We would like to thank the organisers for hosting this wonderful evening, and also our customers for nominating us and everybody that’s been a part of this journey.”
Best Contemporary Restaurant The Bulrush Bistro Although unable to join us on the night, we caught up with the team at The Bulrush Bistro to find out how they felt about their first big win at the Eastside Restaurant Awards. “It’s our first achievement, the first time entering the awards so a very lovely surprise, we’ll need to find a place on the wall for it!” said Sue Anderson, owner of Bulrush Bistro. “We have a unique spot with good views and a good atmosphere at Bulrush where you can come suited and booted for an evening meal or in your casual attire for a summers lunch on the patio. “We aim high and want to have something for everyone.” Sue made sure to give thanks to her chefs and all of the Bulrush team: “It’s a team effort and we couldn’t do it without them.”
EASTSIDE RESTAURANT AWARDS
Family Favourite The Cowshed A stylish new restaurant serving breakfast, dinner and of course an array of gorgeous ice creams in every flavour you could wish for, The Cowshed received the Family Favourite Award, the perfect commendation for a familyrun business. “We’re over the moon. We’re a new business and we’ve only been doing this since February. We make the best ice cream but there’s no award for that!” said owner Rebecca Storey. A completely unique place to eat and indulge with your nearest and dearest, there’s no wonder The Cowshed just keeps getting busier. “It’s going from strength to strength, it’s very much a family business.”
Best Afternoon Tea Walkers Nurseries Recipients of the new Eastside award for Best Afternoon Tea, Walkers Nurseries’ win was well-deserved. Serving their customers the best tea, savoury snacks and sweet treats, they really do work hard each and every day to make sure their standards are high as can be, so that their customers leave happy. “Wendy comes in at six o’clock in the morning and she puts her all in. Everything is freshly baked, we all deserve it, and we all work really hard,” said Walkers’ Nick Waldron.
Best Newcomer The Sun Inn Without a doubt the liveliest group of the night, the team at The Sun Inn were absolutely overjoyed to be crowned Eastside’s Best Newcomer. “We’re ecstatic. We’ve got an absolutely cracking team. We’ve only been open a year so we didn’t expect to win. We’re all so enthusiastic and that’s what makes it work.” There was absolutely no denying the team’s enthusiasm, as, as we spoke to managers Bryony and Erin, even from the next room over we could hear the cheers of the rest of the staff. As well as thanking their amazing team, Bryony and Erin wanted to say a special thanks to the owners, Adrian and Paul.

Make it a success WHETHER YOUR PARTY IS LARGE OR SMALL, FOLLOW THESE TOP TIPS TO MAKE SURE IT’S ONE TO REMEMBER – FOR THE RIGHT REASONS. BY RHIANA HUGHES. e’re heading full force into party season, so whether you’re in charge of your office do or you’ve got your own celebrations to take care of, the food and drink you serve at a gathering is more important than you might think.
W
Whether you’re newly engaged and you’ve hired out a local venue for your family and friends, or your birthday is coming up and you fancy a quiet one with your nearest and dearest, there’s only so many times guests can politely pass around a platter of cold sausage rolls.
SMALLER PARTIES Food If you’re having an intimate party at home you’re more likely to know what it is your guests do or don’t like. It also gives you a chance to be more creative with the food and drink you serve as you’re not having to make huge servings. If it’s a more casual get together you’re hosting, it can be tempting to reach for those frozen bags of party food, but why not go the extra mile and whip up some snacks from scratch? Try making your own mini chicken fajitas or smoked salmon blinis, and if you really can’t resist the temptation of a good old sausage roll, why not mix it up and make some more unusual flavours such as caramelised apple and fennel or even chorizo? Hosting a full on dinner party? Don’t bite off more than you can chew. If the kitchen doesn’t call your name don’t put pressure on yourself to deliver a five-star meal to your guests, as you’ll more than likely end up scuffling with your partner and not getting dinner on the table until 10.30 (we’ve all seen Come Dine with Me). Simple doesn’t have to mean boring though. There are a wealth of slow-cooker 40 Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk
recipes out there, from chicken to beef and lamb or even veggie. Easy to put together and still full of flavour, a good slow-cooked stew or curry is bound to please your guests. If you’re confident you can whip up a fabulous three-course meal there are plenty of dishes that shouldn’t take you away from your guests all night. Start with some halloumi stuffed peppers or breaded mozzarella sticks, then a nice slow-roasted shoulder of lamb will always go down well and can be left to cook in the oven without much maintenance. When it comes to desserts, no matter the size of your party there are plenty of sweet treats you can put together before your guests even arrive. Cheesecakes and roulades are easy to make and can be kept in the fridge until you’re ready to serve your final course.
Drinks A bottle of wine or fizz is always going to go down well as the majority of us love a tipple. Grab a few of your favourites and consider adding cocktails to the menu too. Even if it’s just a simple Bellini or some pre-made strawberry gin, offering something a bit different is sure to impress your guests.
“Don’t put pressure on yourself to deliver a five-star meal to your guests, as you’ll more than likely end up scuffling with your partner and not getting dinner on the table until 10.30.”
FOOD & DRINK
LARGER PARTIES Food As the numbers of your party increase, so does the difficulty of pulling off an impressive feast. Don’t spread yourself too thin and plan an extensive meal that you won’t have time to enjoy yourself. If cost isn’t an issue, consider hiring a caterer to prepare your favourite dishes for you. If you’re on more of a budget, don’t worry as there are plenty of ways to feed larger groups. A buffet is always a safe option as it increases the chances that there will be something for everyone. If you’re hosting a party that’s likely to last a fair few hours, opt for dishes that can be enjoyed hot as well as cold so people can pick throughout the day or night. Think bacon and cheese straws, handmade pizzas and nachos.
If you’ve got the facilities to keep things heated, consider a large batch of chilli or a make your own taco station. Cakes and donuts are sure to be a hit too, but don’t stop at a run of the mill lemon drizzle, as although it might be the UK’s favourite, it can seem a little boring. If it’s an engagement party, why not opt for cake pops decorated as brides and grooms? If it’s a birthday party, why not use the dessert to celebrate the guest of honour? Find a dessert you love and add a personal touch.
Drinks Getting drinks ready for a big party can be quite tricky as it’s not always easy to tell what you’ll get through. Nobody wants to be the one called on to nip to the shop for a mid-
party ice run, so make sure you over rather than underestimate on that front! Bartenders can be a great help when you’re hosting a large party, but they don’t come cheap. There are plenty of cocktails that can be made in large batches if you’re not wanting to splash out. We do it with Pimms in the summer, so who’s to say we can’t do the same in the colder months? Favourites such as mulled wine or cider can expect a warm reception as the weather starts to turn, and a spiced rum or pomegranate punch is sure to fight off that winter chill too. Not forgetting those teetotallers among us either, there are plenty of non-alcoholic cocktails that can be enjoyed by both adults and children such as pomegranate, ginger and lime water or watermelon lemonade. Mixing it up ESTATE AGENT TURNED COCKTAIL-CONNOISSEUR JEN WRIGHT SPEAKS TO EASTSIDE ABOUT HER BOOMING BUSINESS. BY RHIANA HUGHES. s owner of a successful Retford estate agency for eight years, if you didn’t know Jen Wright you might be surprised by her jump from selling homes to shaking up the cocktail world. Those who know her though, were much less shocked by her move. A massive cocktail fan, Jen would host house parties and spend half the night preparing cocktails for her guests. It wasn’t until Jen found herself expecting a houseful of guests on Christmas Day that the thought occurred to her to go out and try to buy some quality ready-made cocktails to serve. This was a failed mission, though, and Jen thought to herself; “This is crazy. There must be people like me who want to go out and buy some nice cocktails”, and it was this that led to the creation of The Cocktail Pickers Club, a range of pre-mixed, bottled cocktails. Jen built her business up from scratch, developing The Cocktail Pickers Club over two years while still running her estate agency, and then eventually selling up to help fund the cocktail project. In just two years, Jen’s hard work has led to The Cocktail Pickers Club being listed in over
A

100 premium outlets throughout the UK, from farm shops and food halls to big national names such as Next, Booths and Ocado, and even recently winning a contract to launch
her brand in 81 outlets across Sweden. The business initially launched with three flavours; The English Country Garden, a Strawberry and Rhubarb Cosmopolitan and a Passionfruit Martini, and they’ve also recently launched the limited edition Bramble Hedgerow, just in time for Christmas. All of the cocktails are naturally low in sugar as well as preservative-free, something many thought couldn’t be done as it had never been achieved before. “Often cocktails are too sweet, and I try to eat low sugar where possible, so I saw myself as my target market and did something that has never been done like this before.” Jen’s cocktails are practical as well as delicious, there’s no measuring out your spirits or squeezing your limes until your wrist gives out, just simple, tasty cocktails all put together for you. This doesn’t mean they have to look simple though. “We do encourage people to have fun with it, so the measure is there in the bottle but you can still shake it over ice in your cocktail shaker and dress it up to make it look fancy” – just as Jen did for us when we met her at The Tasting Note in Bawtry.
FOOD & DRINK
The Cocktail Pickers Club @ The Tasting Note hat better to keep the spirit of late summer alive than a fruity cocktail or two? Or four? We went down to The Tasting Note in Bawtry to see for ourselves whether bottled cocktails really can taste just as good as the ones we’ll happily spend a tenner on at a bar on a Friday night (spoiler, they can – at least those made by The Cocktail Pickers Club). We asked six competition-winning cocktail lovers to give us their honest feedback on Jen’s creations.
W
Sweet but again, not too sweet, this cocktail would be perfect at any gathering. BRAMBLE HEDGEROW Jen’s disclaimer that the Bramble Hedgerow is a love/hate cocktail didn’t give anyone any reservations about trying it. Made with gin, blackberry, thyme and a dash of lime, the majority ruled that though the flavours weren’t what they were used to, they did work really well together. The cocktail was a beautiful deep magenta colour, with a strong blackberry flavour and a slight, welcome kick at the end.
THE ENGLISH COUNTRY GARDEN Made with gin, apples, elderflower and a dash of lime, this drink was a hit with our cocktailloving ladies. Served with fresh cucumber and mint, The English Country Garden was a refreshing way to kick off the evening. Light, smooth and not too sweet, it would make the perfect summer tipple. One guest even told us that she usually can’t stand gin, but this cocktail changed everything.
PASSIONFRUIT MARTINI As soon as Jen poured the martinis, all eyes in the room lit up. Vodka, passionfruit and vanilla have been expertly blended together here to create a smooth, velvety drink. Light, and unique in flavour, our Eastside ladies could really taste and feel the creaminess of the vanilla and the fresh passionfruit floating atop the cocktail was a welcome bonus.
STRAWBERRY AND RHUBARB COSMOPOLITAN A twist on the classic made famous by the Sex and the City foursome, the Strawberry and Rhubarb Cosmopolitan was another fruity and refreshing treat. The strawberry and rhubarb flavours really came through individually but worked perfectly together at the same time.
You might think asking six ladies to take a vote after four cocktails isn’t the brightest idea, but don’t worry, we had the ladies jotting down their thoughts as they went. The overall winner of the night was The English Country Garden, with many of the women telling us it made them forget about the British winter coming around the corner.
All of Jen’s cocktails were hits with ourselves and our Eastside ladies, and with Christmas and party season coming up, and a couple of girly weekends on the calendar, there’s no doubt there’s an invite in the post for The Cocktail Pickers Club. Viva Las Vegas! BAWTRY HALL SHOWED THAT IT IS MUCH MORE THAN A WEDDING VENUE BY PLAYING HOST TO A SIN CITY-INSPIRED BIRTHDAY PARTY. e all know and love Bawtry as a peaceful market town, bustling with independent boutiques and restaurants and often host to wedding parties at the town’s Grade II listed Bawtry Hall. Throughout the year, Bawtry Hall is a popular wedding venue with its stunning grounds and beautifully decorated halls drawing in brides and grooms from across the country. It’s not just weddings Bawtry Hall can play host to though, and one recent weekend saw Bawtry Hall become Vegas for the night. The Angels Events in Harrogate (www.the-angels.com) saw Bawtry Hall as the perfect location for them to work their magic, and they literally rolled out the red carpet for James Mortimore’s ‘The Hangover’ themed 40th birthday celebrations. “It was a blank canvas so it was perfect for an event of this size,” said James. Bawtry Hall was almost unrecognisable as it was fully transformed into sin city for the night.
W

A personalised twist on the famous Welcome to Las Vegas sign was lit up outside the hall’s grand doors, and a stray mattress lay atop the roof – and the decorations got more and more impressive as the guest of honour and 125 of his friends and family explored the venue. “The Angels Events were amazing and decked the place out head to toe, they set it all up in two days.” Each room had a design and theme of its own, every one with its own form of entertainment going on inside. Imaginations ran wild inside the movie-inspired do, with a rodeo beer bottle sending already spinning heads whirling, and a casino room set up for those who were feeling lucky. There was even a tiger on the prowl which we were told mysteriously vanished during the party… There was of course a room dedicated to dancing, with a DJ and saxophonist providing the music, and an area set up as a photo booth for guests to strike a pose in, or even
pretend to strike their partners with as they posed in boxing gloves in reference to Mike Tyson’s appearance in the popular film. It wasn’t just the rooms that had the guests in awe, but the servers were dropping jaws all night long. If gorgeous drag queens and dancing girls weren’t enough to capture the attention of the guests then the movie lookalikes certainly turned a few heads. Impressive lookalikes of Mr Chow, Mike

Tyson and Alan – baby and all, joined the party, and even headed up a conga line. If anyone felt themselves inspired by Mike Tyson’s long lost twin, they were in luck as The Angels Events thought of it all, even installing a tattoo parlour at Bawtry Hall (don’t worry, not the permanent sort). With beers, G&Ts, shots of Jägermeister and Champagne being passed around all night, food was definitely required to prevent a real life hangover the next morning. Bawtry Hall’s experienced team can put together bespoke menus, whether their guests are looking for a six-course meal or a finger buffet. It wouldn’t really be Vegas without some proper American food though would it? James’ guests feasted on those American indulgences we all love: burgers, hot dogs and American snacks inspired by ‘The Hangover’. There was also an array of Asian nibbles on offer in reference to the movie’s sequel, which was set in Thailand. After a night full of drinking, dancing and gambling, just as any night in the Nevada
desert would be spent, James and his guests needed somewhere to rest their heads and nurse their very own hangovers the following morning. “One of the reasons we chose to have the party at Bawtry Hall was because of its great location and close proximity to The Crown, so our guests wouldn’t have too far to travel at the end of the night.” Bawtry Hall’s sister venue, The Crown Hotel, were more than happy to take care of James and his guests, putting them up in their
stunning contemporary hotel rooms. With comfortable memory foam mattresses and hundreds of channels to flick through the next morning while eating a bacon sarnie and getting back on the mend; it was just what they all needed. One last thing… has anyone seen the tiger? To find out more about planning your own big night in Bawtry, visit bawtryhall.co.uk or www.crownhotel-bawtry.com or give the team a call on 01302 710341.

Starry night GUESTS SPARKLED AT THE INAUGURAL CRYSTAL BALL AT BAWTRY HALL. oncaster’s business community were dressed to the nines and ready to party at the inaugural Crystal Ball held in the magnificent surroundings of Bawtry Hall. The event was sponsored by Handelsbanken and Pristine Cleaning Services and organised by Doncaster Business for the Community (DB4C), the ground-breaking and highly innovative charitable trust run entirely by the town’s business community which raises much needed funds for local charities and community projects. The charity also used the occasion to celebrate its first anniversary of operations whilst marking DB4C’s first event partnership with Equinox and Firefly to raise funds to support cancer patients. Two hundred guests filled Bawtry Hall,

including the Civic Mayor, Councillor Majid Khan, and were welcomed by DB4C director Nigel Tomlinson and Equinox director Sarah Mullen. Guests were entertained whilst they dined by local singer Jess Brett, followed by a lively game of ‘heads and tails’ with one lucky lady winning the big prize of the evening – a much sought after Mulberry handbag. Guests were then treated to a stunning fireworks display in the grounds of Bawtry Hall followed by dancing to the music of the Heads Will Roll band and disco into the early hours. As a result of the generosity of the guests and businesses that donated many raffle prizes the event raised a total of £4,000 for Equinox. DB4C Director Nigel Tomlinson said: “This was our first non-sports related event and it
was a huge success, it is now firmly established in the social calendar. DB4C has achieved so much in its first year proving that the town’s businesses have a huge heart and care deeply about the community and its well-being. We will drive on and look forward to holding more events in 2019.” Sarah Mullen added: “For Equinox to be asked to be the representative of our charities at the Crystal Ball was a huge privilege. Both Cancer Research and Firefly rely on donations and charity fundraising to operate and both play such a huge part in the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of Cancer both nationally and locally. The Doncaster business community have taken Equinox to their hearts and with the money raised at the ball we hope to have a record fundraising year.”

Stylish front-runners THE VOTES FLOODED IN AND THERE WERE TWO CLEAR WINNERS... WELL DONE TO ELISSA AND GREG WHO WERE CROWNED THIS YEAR’S BEST DRESSED...

Elissa’s winning outfit from Chique
Greg, pictured left ith a light shining on Eastside’s Best Dressed Lady year after year, this year saw the revival of Eastside’s Best Dressed Man, and having scoured the St Leger Festival for the racecourse’s most dapper gents, we left it up to you, the Eastside readers, to decide which local man deserved the title. All of the men looked great and there was some stiff competition, but there could of course only be one winner, and we’re happy to announce that Greg Sennett has won the title of Eastside’s Best Dressed Man 2018. Greg was over the moon to have won the votes of the Eastside readers. “I’m chuffed, thank you to everyone that voted for me. All the gents who were in the competition looked great so I didn’t expect it at all. “I usually go for a three-piece matching suit, but wanted something a little different this year. I liked that I can wear the jacket with chinos for something different afterwards.” Greg spends his days working as a scaffolder, mainly on power stations, so wearing a suit isn’t an everyday thing for him, but clearly this hasn’t meant he’s lost his eye for style (though he does admit his wife Laura gave him a helping hand when it came to putting together the perfect St Leger suit). “I’ve been going to the St Leger Festival for years, and I really enjoyed going to Gentleman’s Day for a change this year.” Though excited to get hold of all of his lovely prizes, Greg is most looking forward to another opportunity to head to the races. “With two young children, my wife and I don’t get to go as often as we used to, so this will be a nice excuse.”
W
he William Hill St Leger Festival might be over for another year, but there are still two very important winners left to be announced – Eastside’s Best Dressed Lady and Best Dressed Man. There might have been plenty of racing action lined up at the St Leger, but all eyes were on the spectators, and in the run up to the event, we asked Eastside fashionistas from around the region to send in photos of themselves in their show-stopping Leger outfits that they purchased from local boutiques. October’s Eastside magazine saw our finalists revealed, and since then we’ve seen votes flooding in for your favourite Eastside ladies. We are thrilled to announce that the winner of Eastside Best Dressed Lady 2018 is Elissa Charles, 17, from Doncaster. Elissa wore a stunning red and white skater dress from Chique in Armthorpe, teamed with black sandal heels and a gorgeous red and black fascinator, with red lippy rounding off the look. Elissa’s winning look wasn’t the first she

bought though, “I actually bought a dress from Essex first, but I was never 100 per cent sold on it. I’ve always loved red, and when I saw this dress at Chique I fell in love with it straight away. “Because I’m quite tall it can be hard to find styles that suit me but the skater dress style is really flattering.” Finding her perfect dress is what allowed Elissa to complete her look with her stunning fascinator. “I didn’t really need one with my first dress because it was quite big and it would have seemed a bit too much, so I was really happy when I found this and it matched the dress perfectly. “I’ve been to Ladies Days and other race days before but this was my first time at St Leger.” Judging from how well Elissa’s outfit was put together, I don’t think this was beginner’s luck. Carolyn Poole, owner of family-run Chique, says the boutique is always popular with race-goers, and was over the moon for Elissa who works for Chique’s online store. “It’s fantastic. It was a lovely surprise that she’d won. She looked amazing and she really did stand out.” As well as being flocked to for stunning dresses ideal for the racecourse, Chique are getting more and more popular with ladies looking for the perfect prom dress, gorgeous evening wear and even their unique casualwear. “I think boutique shoppers really are growing, and we’re growing ourselves, we’ve got a lot of unique designers and brands coming in and we’ve got our online site now as well.”

Little miracles WITH THE ADDITION OF A NEW SERVICE, JESSOP FERTILITY LEAD THE WAY IN HELPING COUPLES WHO ARE STRUGGLING TO CONCEIVE.
64 Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk
PROMOTION
VF (In Vitro Fertilisation) has been helping couples conceive for just over 40 years. During this time, great strides have been made in the field of assisted conception and over six million babies have been born worldwide as a result of these ground-breaking treatments. Leading the way for South Yorkshire is Jessop Fertility, part of Sheffield Teaching Hospitals. The Assisted Conception Unit opened in 2001, and over the last 17 years has helped thousands of patients achieve their dream of becoming a family by using the latest treatments and technological advances. The use of the latest technology has led to considerable improvements in the chance of treatment being successful and the latest figures speak for themselves. This year Jessop Fertility have had their best ever results showing that, overall, 48.6 per cent of IVF treatment cycles (in women aged 18-45) will result in a clinical pregnancy. In addition, 51 per cent of patients have embryos suitable for freezing, which can be used at a later date. One of the most important recent developments has been the introduction of the latest state-of-the-art time-lapse incubators. This enables embryos to be placed in an incubator where their development is uninterrupted and can be monitored closely. This allows the scientists to select the embryo that has the best chance of achieving a pregnancy. Whether you are receiving IVF through the NHS or are funding it yourself, all treatments at Jessop Fertility include timelapse technology, embryo glue and early pregnancy monitoring.
I
Jonathan Skull is clinical head of the unit and is delighted to report the best ever success rates at Jessop Fertility
Davina Hulme is a senior embryologist and is excited to be bringing the latest technologies to Jessop Fertility
“All our team strive to provide the best possible care and support to our patients through what can be a very stressful and emotionally demanding experience.” As well as IVF, Jessop Fertility offers a full range of fertility treatments, including a comprehensive range of assisted conception techniques such as Intra-Cytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) and treatments involving donor sperm and eggs. The unit is about to launch a PreImplantation Genetic Screening (PGS) service. The PGS service involves the careful removal of a few cells from the outside of an embryo to check that it has the correct number of chromosomes. Davina Hulme is a senior embryologist at Jessop Fertility and has many years’ experience in this technique. She explains: “By ensuring that the embryo has the correct genetic makeup, we can select the embryo with the best chance of becoming a healthy baby. This treatment may benefit some patients who have had repeated unsuccessful treatments, or some older patients and will help improve the already fantastic results at Jessop Fertility.” Jessop Fertility also offers a PreImplantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD) service for couples who are at risk of having a child with a genetic condition. Currently this service is offered as a satellite service
alongside Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital in London. With the PGD service, the genetic team work alongside the fertility team in the Jessop Wing. The patients are prepared for treatment in Sheffield and when they are ready for their eggs to be harvested, they travel to Guy’s in London for the egg collection and for the embryos to be tested. Jonathan Skull, the clinical lead at Jessop Fertility, explains: “We work with Guy’s in a satellite capacity throughout, but our patients still need to travel down to London for some aspect of their treatment. With the development of our embryo biopsy service it means that we will soon be able to offer all the treatment in Sheffield, which will make the whole process quicker and easier for patients, with no need to travel elsewhere.” Although the latest developments are exciting and lead to an improved chance of pregnancy, Jonathan added: “The most important aspect of treatment is that we treat patients with sensitivity and compassion. All our team strive to provide the best possible care and support to our patients through what can be a very stressful and emotionally demanding experience.” If you would like to find out more about any of the treatments or the brand new PGS service coming to Jessop Fertility this autumn, call 0114 226 8501 to speak to a member of the team or send a message via the website at www.jessopfertility.org.uk. IN BRIEF
Glamorous partnership with Bawtry Hall & Red Carpet Ready
Rolex event at the Mansion House in Doncaster Prestigious South Yorkshire jewellers H L Brown held a Rolex evening at the magnificent Mansion House in Doncaster. The exclusive evening was to showcase the Rolex 2018 Baselworld collection. Among the eagerly anticipated models exhibited were the new GMT Master II, Datejust 36 and Rolex Deepsea creations. The main technical advance in the new calibre movements features a 70-hour power reserve, an increase in over 20 hours. This development allows the wearer the ability to leave a watch at rest for an entire weekend and find it still going on Monday morning, an impressive achievement in mechanical watchmaking. Also on display were specially selected items of jewellery from the H L Brown range. Electric violinist Alexandra Parker entertained the guests while they enjoyed champagne and canapes. Cocktails specialists Kettle Black of Sheffield created a green cocktail representing Rolex and a purple cocktail representing H L Brown specially for the evening. The Mansion House is one of only three in the country. The other two are in London and York. A Mansion House is an official residence of a Lord Mayor for entertaining royalty, nobility and other important visitors.

MOTORING
Rebel Ribelle Everybody loves a Maserati, especially a limited-edition Maserati. So say hello to the Maserati Ghibli Ribelle. While the Ghibli may not be the most exotic of Maserati thoroughbreds, this special edition variant will certainly make you feel a million dollars. Limited to 200 units, the Ribelle has a unique paint coupled with the shiny black 19-inch Proteo alloy wheels with contrasting red laser etched details, giving this the ultimate stealth look. The interior boasts a two-tone black and red theme: two-tone dashboard, red central armrest, black leather steering wheel with tone-on-tone stitching and premium, full leather two-tone seats, all exclusive to this model. Engines offered are the 275hp diesel and 350hp and 430hp petrol units mated to a flappy paddle gearbox.
FROM SMART SALOONS TO SLEEK FASTBACKS, JORDAN CUTFORTH’S HOT PICKS FOR NOVEMBER ARE SURE TO PLEASE.
Intense E-tense The DS brand is the luxury arm of the Citroen umbrella. Combining stunning visuals with cutting edge tech, the DS range offers something for everyone. Now, with the DS 7 Crossback, there is a new variant to add to the mix, the E-tense 4x4. Combining practicality, design, speed and economy is what the DS 7 Crossback E-Tense 4x4 is deigned for. With a 300hp power unit under the bonnet (200hp petrol engine and 109hp) electric motor, the DS7 is certainly pokey yet it achieves 128mpg, saving your bank account in the process. Four modes are available: zero emission; Sport Mode; Hybrid; and 4WD. In full EV mode, the Crossback can muster 31miles and achieve a top speed of 83mph.
Fastback fun Since the Hyundai I30 came onto the scene it has caused a stir in the hot-hatch community. A serious alternative to the Golf GTI and the like? In short, probably not; the sleek new Hyundai I30N is more your shouty Honda Civic TypeR than classy Golf GTI but, thanks to the more popular saloon versions of hatchbacks (think A-Class saloon and A3 saloon), the I30N has got the fastback treatment. The car is exactly the same, same engine, drivetrain, but the fastback version improves the design no end. First official showing at Paris Motor Show.
Classier R-Design Volvo has extended its brilliant V60 range with the addition of the ever popular and beautifully designed R-Design variants. The V60 has always been one of those cars that separates itself from the current big three German giants for offering minimalist, classy styling with impeccable build quality. With this new V60 estate R-Design, it has raised the bar for plush family motoring. The R-Design offers so much more than classier visual; we have sports-tuned suspension for better driving dynamics, the cabin features part-leather sports seats, black headlining, sports pedals and a sports leather steering wheel and gear lever. Front and rear parking sensors, City Safety autonomous emergency braking and Volvo’s Sensus connectivity system all provided as standard. Prices start at £35,410. 82 Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk
