Inheritance Tax could still threaten your family’s prosperity Dale Murten Wealth Management is inviting readers to discover the simple yet highly effective steps you can take to protect your wealth and stay in control.
M
ore and more people are affected by IHT every year. It used to be a tax that was the preserve of the very wealthy, but escalating property values in the last ten years have put paid to that. For single people, Inheritance Tax applies at the top rate of 40% to assets worth over £325,000. This threshold is known as the nil rate band. For married couples and civil partnerships the threshold is £650,000. But the higher £650,000 limit only applies when assets are passed between spouses and civil partners and this figure reduces if any money is passed onto any of your benefactors during your lifetime. There are also other financial implications to consider, particularly if you are a widow, widower or divorcee.
And with the threshold remaining unchanged by the coalition government and subject to further legislation the
freeze will be extended up to and including the 2017/2018 tax year, more people could get sucked in as the minimum IHT threshold usually increases at a rate equivalent to at least inflation. Dale Murten of Dale Murten Wealth Management, a local Associate Partner Practice of St. James’s Place Wealth Management, is concerned that most people do not understand the implications of IHT. “It’s clear that people are confused by IHT policy and many mistakenly believe they are unlikely to be affected by it,” he said. And he is also concerned about a potentially more serious knock-on effect. “AWill* is vital in helping mitigate IHT,” said Dale. “Without a proper Will, people run the risk of their estate being severely reduced through IHT and also leaving

themselves exposed to the ravages of long term care costs later in life. It’s now more important than ever to seek professional advice and establish how you can protect your hard earned assets.” If you are uncertain about how you stand regarding IHT and would like to know more about how to prevent much of your money falling into the hands of Her Majesty’s Revenue & Customs, or your Local Authority through Long Term Care fees, please contact Dale Murten Wealth Management. Hill House School continues to be the region’s fastest growing independent school. Consistently the top performing school in the area, at GCSE 93 per cent of this year’s pupils achieved the all-important minimum of five good GCSEs including maths and English, with 40 per cent of all exam passes at A or A*. Hill House Sixth has now established itself as the top academic sixth form in Doncaster, with a record number of new entrants this September. Head of sixth form, Caroline Rogerson, said: “It’s all about high expectations and great experiences; our new sixth form scholarships, where students can gain either subsidised or even fully funded places, have proved incredibly popular, and are allowing a lot of students the opportunity to benefit from the outstanding education we offer.” Prospective families are warmly invited to meet the pupils and staff at Hill House for themselves at the next open day, which takes place from 10am to 3pm on Saturday 3 October. University Campus Barnsley University Campus Barnsley (UCB) offers an individual university experience which will give you the skills you need to succeed. Nine out of ten* of students go on to work or further study on completion of their course, which demonstrates how UCB can prepare you for the next step on your journey. UCB offers a wide range Higher National Certificates and Diplomas (HNC/Ds) and degrees in subjects ranging from art and crafts to music; construction to public services; and games design to performing arts. Small class sizes mean that you will get personalised support from tutors, and course fees are just £5,995 per year for full time courses and only £2,995 per year for part-time courses. The centrally-based campus has excellent facilities and is within walking distance of Barnsley Interchange and close to the M1 motorway. * From the Destination of Leavers’ survey 2013/14

Are we all about academics? No, but were you aware the Daily Telegraph and The Times both rank QE College as the top most academically successful day and boarding school in the North for A*/ A grades at A Level and equivalent results and our Faculty of Queen Ethelburga’s, the second most academically successful co-educational day and boarding school in the North for A*/ A grades at A Level and equivalent results?
Are we all about Sport? No independent school in the North has the equivalent of our £20m Sports Village. A parent said we are now in a league above the rest. See: www.sportsvillageqe.org
Are we all about superb facilities? No, but we have invested over £80m in superb new teaching facilities and resources in the last 8 years - way more than any other independent school in the North.
Are we all about boarding? No, but no one comes close to the quality of our boarding accommodation. The best in the UK. All bedrooms have private bathroom, air-con, TV, phone & mini-kitchen.
Are we all about day pupils? A LEVEL RESULTS 2015 QE COLLEGE Overall pass rate 100% A*/A - A level results - 81% A*/B - A level results - 98% QE FACULTY Overall pass rate 100% A*/A - A level results - 81% A*/B - A level results - 97% “We were looking for our children to change schools. However in the independent sector this has financial implications. Our problems in this regard were solved by the offer of Day or Boarding Awards (our choice) for both children. They moved, are now happy, and doing very well. QE is growing in size because it is run in a refreshing, modern and much better way. There are plenty of day children.”
No, but it is interesting to note our day fees are, on average, over 14% less cost than other local independent schools and our bus service covers a very big local area.
Is it all about Scholarships and Awards? No, but then again who else offers over £3m in Scholarships and Awards every year? Even without any form of Scholarship or Award, sending your child to QE could save you between £3,000 and £7,000 in day fees a year, compared to elsewhere.
All of the above are perhaps the reasons why appreciably more parents have chosen QE this year than last year. SPECIAL BOARDING AWARDS Worth up to £75,500 Awarded to outstanding, high achieveing students in categories Academic and/or Sport. Awards based on experience and ability, subject to interview and assessment. (Note a 30% award may be given under this scholarship type for our Elite Sport programmes). Interest-free credit adds another ingredient to sisters’ family recipe for success
Giving you extra
W
hen Doncaster carpet store boss Joanne Horgan had a great business idea, she knew exactly who to share it with, because her sister, Lisa Beaumont, also runs her own carpet store on Queen’s Road, Sheffield. Both sisters operate highly successful franchises for United Carpets and Beds, the largest franchised flooring company in the UK, and they have recently introduced interest-free credit facilities for customers, which is boosting their businesses even further. With almost 25 combined years in the business behind them, they believe keeping it in the family is a real recipe for success. “I first got into the business about 15 years ago with my husband John,” says Joanne, who runs the popular Doncaster store on Barnby Dun Road. “It’s been a fantastic business for us and, because United Carpets and Beds is such a large company, it can leverage the best prices from suppliers – yet the stores remain a local family business because it is a franchise. That means we offer people a friendly, local service and we really know what they like. “We introduced interest-free credit facilities earlier in the year, and we’re finding that people absolutely love it – it’s a great way to spread
20
out the cost of new flooring and make it even more affordable.” Lisa got her own United Carpets and Beds store eight years ago. “I’d had a very successful career previously, but decided I would like to have my own business,” she says. “I went to the Franchise Show and took a good look at all the franchises on offer, and United Carpets was head and shoulders above the rest. Of course, I already knew good things about the company from Joanne, so decided to make my investment there.” Both sisters have a keen appetite for business that has made their stores some of the most successful in the company, which has more than 60 across the midlands and the north. Joanne said: “It’s great having my sister in the business, because she understands when things aren’t going so well and when they are really booming.”
Lisa agrees: “We bounce ideas off each other, which all helps us to be competitive in what can be a busy market.” Both the Doncaster and Sheffield stores put a strong emphasis on quality products, good deals and excellent customer service. They stock a huge range of carpets, vinyl, woodfloor and laminate, as well as beds. Lisa says: “Buying flooring can be a big decision, especially when there is so much to choose from. “Our staff are very knowledgeable, so they can help people to make the right choice for their home – and together with our interest-free credit, it means it’s really easy for people to get the flooring of their dreams. “We also use expert carpet fitters, so you are looked after from the minute you walk into the store until the minute you are standing on your new carpet.” Joanne said: “When you come into our stores, you won’t get a hard sell – just good, friendly service from local people you can rely on. “We’re both convinced it’s the only way to run a store – and the fact that our customers come back again and again goes to prove it.” United Carpets and Beds Barnby Dun Road, Doncaster, DN2 4QJ Tel: 01302 761717 United Carpets and Beds 407 Queens Rd, Sheffield, S2 4DR Tel: 0114 275 5559

From Ladies Day at the Leger to muscle cars and more, it’s been a busy month in Bawtry. The Crown celebrates the Leger The sun shone and the fizz flowed at the DFS Leger Ladies Day. The Crown Hotel had a fabulous day at Doncaster Race Course on Thursday 10 September entertaining clients and presenting their sponsored race for the crownhotel-bawtry.com stakes. Crown Hotel staff member, Katey, helped out as a scout for the DFS Best Dressed Lady and one of the finalists she chose won the title wearing a classic black and white number. The Crown cocktail, The Fillies Flowery Fizz, sold in their hundreds with ladies gathered at the bar before and after the race. Guests also received a shot of delicious Prosecco and strawberry sorbet with every cocktail and Prosecco they purchased. The Crown Hotel also hosted a Leger
preview dinner on the run up to the Ladies Day on Tuesday 8 September. The glitzy, black tie evening was sponsored by the official sponsors of the St Leger, Ladbrokes and was attended by 130 guests, who arrived to fizz and strawberries and the music of violinist Alexandra Parker, before enjoying a delicious three-course dinner. An expert panel, who provided a Leger analysis, included Simon Mapletoft from Sky TV’s At The Races, Haley O’Connor from Ladbrokes PR, Roger Hart from Doncaster Racecourse Tipster and local trainers Dave Griffiths from Bawtry and Scott Dixon from Retford. Both The Leger Preview dinner and the Ladies Day were a huge success and a wonderful time was had by all.

Respect Carers was set up to praise and support carers in the community. “Being funeral directors, we constantly meet both professional carers and family members who become unpaid carers and we feel these unsung heroes need to be rewarded for their hard work and devotion,” added Gordon. The 25th annual ceremony at The Brewery in London was attended by over 300 guests. looking simply fabulous in their show-stopping Leger outfits, purchased at local boutiques. Images flooded in via Facebook, Twitter and email and choosing our shortlist was no easy task. But now, after much deliberation, we have whittled down the entries and selected our final 12. Some fantastic local businesses have stepped forward to provide our leading lady with a wonderful prize package. She’ll receive treats such as tickets for Doncaster Racecourse, a meal for two at The Old
Weighing Room, an overnight stay with breakfast at Grand St Leger Hotel, a limousine ride to the races with Tyson Limousines, and hair and nail treatments at Star Style. Now you get to decide who should win the coveted title. To vote for your favourite, visit www.regionalmagazine.co.uk and click on the ‘competitions’ link by midnight on Sunday 11 October. The winning lady will be contacted in the week commencing 12 October and will be featured in our November issue.

ast year, we set out to recognise not only the best dressed ladies at the Ladbrokes St Leger Festival, but the best dressed men and couples, too. We teamed up with the Grand St Leger Hotel to host the first ever Eastside champagne lawn, and were suitably wowed by all the dapper dressers who joined us there for a pre-race tipple. After such success, we couldn’t wait to get back out on the lawn and snap this year’s best dressed race-goers. Eastside sales executive Rebecca Hume was on hand with her camera between 11am and 1pm on the Wednesday, Thursday and Friday of Leger week to snap those who had gone the extra mile to impress not only her but also her partner judge John Din, owner of Grand St Leger Hotel. After careful consideration, Rebecca and John awarded Chris Walker with the title of Grand St Leger Best Dressed Man, and named Kev Roberts and Maria Haigh as Grand St Leger Best Dressed Couple.

ES Beauty
There’s a new non-surgical treatment available at Elements MediSpa, perfect for treating cellulite.
M
ore than 90 per cent of women are affected by cellulite – and don’t we know it. After enduring yet another summer of feeling less-than confident about our dimply thighs, many of us will have resolved to sort out the cellulite once and for all in time for the next bikini season. And where better to start than at Elements MediSpa? Their just-launched treatment package combines lymphastim and mesotherapy to tackle cellulite head-on and leave skin looking smoother and firmer so we can bare our legs with pride. Mesotherapy is a safe, natural alternative to invasive cosmetic procedures, reducing and contouring fat to treat cellulite. It works by microscopic quantities of natural extracts, vitamins, minerals and amino acids being injected into the skin. Fat deposits are flushed from the body and do not appear in other areas. Lymphastim is an award-winning lymphatic drainage treatment that takes place within a special suit, into which pressured air
is pumped. This compressed air gently massages the skin and muscles, supporting the natural movement of lymph along the body to induce drainage and reduce cellulitecausing liquids and toxins. The recommended course of a combined lymphastim/mesotherapy treatment package is six sessions at one-week intervals, which is currently on offer at just £550 for a course of six treatments. Unlike procedures such as liposuction, these treatments do not require hospitalisation or general anaesthetic. In fact, there is no downtime at all so you are free to carry on with your day immediately after treatment. To book your course, or for more information on the treatments, contact Elements MediSpa on 01302 34 34 32. You can also visit their website www.elements.org.uk for a full list of treatments and prices. Elements MediSpa 81 Thorne Road, Doncaster, DN1 2ES Tel: 01302 34 34 32 www.elements.org.uk

How can we help stress with essential aromatherapy oils? Liz from Elizabeth Ann Therapies explains.

hat a crazy world we live in. Pressure comes from all sides but, as our grannies would say, we’ve just got to carry on. The world is not going to stop, and pressure is always going to be here – we'll still have to carry on dealing with our daily problems in the
same ways. Many people suffer from stress and depression. They take various medications, comfort eat to console themselves, and some even turn to alcohol. It would seem everybody is looking for some additional way to help them relax and de-stress themselves. Some find healthy ways to do this, but many don’t. Aromatherapy has attracted major funding for research into how it can help our psychological and mental states. These treatments have an extremely high uptake rate. The main benefits are perceived to be general relaxation and stress and anxiety relief, which, in turn, positively affect the immune system. Essential oils work very well on many levels, including emotional and physical. They are being used in hospices, nursing homes and hospitals now. At the Worcester Hospital in Hereford, for example, a trial in which lavender was released into the atmosphere caused patients to sleep in a more natural pattern and made them less aggressive during the day. Lavender is known to have a calming effect on the brain.

Clinic @ The Vanilla Rooms Bawtry www.ElizabethAnnBawtry.com Dear Liz I have been suffering depression and feeling anxious for over a year now. My confidence is extremely low. I'm feeling worthless, trapped and generally miserable. Is there any therapy that could help lift my confidence and self worth and help me move out of this rut I'm in? Steve, Retford. Dear Steve Essential oils can definitely help. They can't do it all, but they can certainly boost confidence. I've found this to be a fact established by many people who have had aromatherapy treatments with me over the years. Essential oils work on the confidence by relieving the fear, stress and nervous tension that often prevents us from doing things. Essential oils for confidence are orange, ginger, cardamom, cedarwood, jasmine and coriander. They can be used during an aromatherapy massage. C
hristmas at The Old Weighing Room is set to be a really special affair. The award-winning restaurant has pulled out all the stops to ensure it is South Yorkshire’s first choice for festive celebrations of all sizes and requirements. In the grounds of Doncaster Racecourse, The Old Weighing Room Restaurant & Bar, formerly Silks, offers contemporary fine dining in a stunning building that underwent a £125,000 refurbishment ahead of its reopening last March. Accommodating up to 70 covers, the restaurant caters for parties of two to 40 and is also available for private hire for parties of over 40. This December, the winner of the Best Newcomer category at Eastside’s Restaurant

of the Year Awards in 2014 will offer a range of festive fine dining options that are perfect for celebrations with friends, family and colleagues alike. The stunning winter menu* available throughout December, and the lavish Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve menus, all carefully crafted by Chef Rick Robinson and his team, showcase the very best of British modern cuisine and are set to leave a lasting impression on festive diners. In keeping with The Old Weighing Room’s approach all year round, the festive menus offer a choice of popular favourites alongside exciting new dishes, featuring a selection of fine Yorkshire ingredients. Rick previously worked for the Jamie Oliver Foundation as a training chef for the
No.15 restaurant in Cornwall. He said: “Over the festive season, guests at The Old Weighing Room will enjoy unique British recipes using the highest quality ingredients, which are sourced locally wherever possible. While there’s a nod towards festive ingredients, we’ve created a series of delicious and memorable menus that offer an alternative to the traditional turkey and trimmings.” The à la carte winter menu is available for booking on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings throughout December from Thursday 3 up until Saturday 19. It will include dishes such as: salt beef hash served with fried quail eggs; honey roast parsnip soup; trio of rabbit; and herb-crusted salmon. The Old Weighing Room is open from 6pm until late, so guests have plenty of time to relax in the elegant bar, which is dominated by a huge mesmerising domed skylight, original stained-glass windows and a classically tiled floor. The drinks menu is extensive and offers a substantial selection of specially selected beverages, fine wines and a large selection of premium spirits and liqueurs. The hot drinks menu includes a range of speciality coffees to be enjoyed on their own or with a liqueur. Damian Gallagher, manager of The Old Weighing Room, said: “The Old Weighing Room really is the perfect setting for a Christmas get-together with friends, family and colleagues. The combination of first-class food served in stunning yet relaxed surroundings makes it an ideal choice for festive celebrations. We would urge people to book early to avoid disappointment.” A seasonal Sunday lunch menu will also be available from 12noon until 6pm on 6, 13 and 20 December. For more details on this menu, see the website. On Christmas Eve, The Old Weighing Room will open for lunch from 12noon, offering a chance to relax with friends and family and kick off the festive celebrations once all of the preparations are done. However, guests are welcome to relax with drinks in the bar until the restaurant closes at 6pm. Christmas Day at The Old Weighing Room will feature an indulgent sixcourse menu. After being greeted with a glass of champagne and an appetiser, guests will enjoy a sumptuous seasonal menu finished off with coffee and mints. Stuffed, rolled turkey served with all the trimmings is the centrepiece of the meal, with pan-fried halibut and salt-baked celeriac offering delicious alternatives. Guests will have their table exclusively for the afternoon and are invited to arrive from 12pm, with dinner served from 1pm. The Christmas Day menu is priced at £80 per person and the restaurant closes at 6pm. Mr Gallagher added: “For those looking to indulge and have a Christmas without the stress of preparing lunch, our stunning sixcourse menu which starts with a glass of champagne and finishes with coffee and petit fours, enjoyed in sumptuous festive surroundings, offers the perfect alternative. From the moment guests arrive, our team will ensure they’re well looked after and enjoy a truly unforgettable Christmas Day.” New Year’s Eve at The Old Weighing Room will see in 2016 in first-class style. nyone who has stood outside Yash will know that it radiates a certain charm. The cosy glow of the conservatory extension and the wooden decking over green turf leading to the front door are the restaurant’s equivalent of rolling out the red carpet, with the promise of a spice journey to stimulate your senses. Yash in Retford started its own journey just over two years ago in July 2013, and has fast become the go-to curry house for residents straddling both sides of the Nottinghamshire/Yorkshire border. And ‘house’ probably is the best way to describe the living room-look décor. Instead of the traditional setting many of us have come to expect at an Indian restaurant, you’ll find contemporary cream leather seating, neutral walls and matching silver-and-gold menus and artwork. It’s an interesting cultural contrast when coupled with traditional Indian and Bangladeshi dishes, but like many great relationships, these opposites work well together. Although the menu is compact, there is a surprising number of dishes to choose from including tandooris, chef’s specialities and a vegetarian section, with curries in many different mild and spicy sauces. Owner Shaddi Rahman and his brother Mohibur, a talented chef, even keep an eye on your health by
cooking all your favourite dishes with far less oil than their competitors. After poppadoms and a pickle tray, my partner and I wanted to see how some classic starters would measure up. I was delighted with my onion bhajis as they were crisp and golden on the outside and soft in the middle – the way they should be. My partner’s somosas were equally delicious and their lightly spiced flavour went well with the sweet sauce on the side. My king prawn karai main course arrived sizzling in a hot pan, covered in a thick, medium-spiced sauce and topped with fragrant coriander. My partner’s chicken makoni had a gorgeous curry sauce that had all the creamy and sweet coconut flavour of a korma, and the tomato zing of a massala – perfect for those who want a change from the regular favourites. The garlic tarka daal had a strong, punchy flavour, the garlic naan was soft and ideal for dipping, and the saffron-yellow rice was full of diced vegetables, as well as chunks of mushroom. This was all washed down with a cooled jug of salted lassi and a sparkling half of Cobra. Full and content, I passed on dessert while my partner finished with a creamy coconut ice cream. If you’re looking for a warm welcome, a hot curry and a cool dessert in a stylish setting, you know where to come.

here's nothing like a bit of midweek indulgence to brighten up the working week, so I rounded up the girls – my sister Naomi and Eastside's Terri and Rebecca – for a curry night at Aagrah in Doncaster. The trouble with indulgence is that it's bad for the waistline, although if you are anything like Terri you'd probably be saying, 'diet's out the window till Saturday' at this point. But before you get out your calorie calculator, you’ll be happy to hear that the health conscious Aagrah in Doncaster has an exclusive ‘slmming menu’. This means the dishes have been prepared with low-fat oil and are grilled rather than cooked in rich sauces. Despite the get-out clause, the four of us embraced the indulgent dishes and refreshing lagers (no slim-line tonics in sight). My raavi (grilled sea bass) starter was peppery and had a slight tikka flavour; whilst Naomi was pleasantly surprised that her king prawn tikka was covered in a curry sauce. Rebecca said her nimok mandi (grilled chicken marinated in garlic and lime) was ‘really nice and spicy’ whilst I took Terri’s silence as a sign she was enjoying her meat samosa too much to stop and comment. As I love creamy curries and garlic, our waiter Aziz had the perfect solution. Chicken malai is not on Aagrah’s menu, but the chefs are more than willing to whip it up on request. Meanwhile, Terri had gladly committed ‘carbo-
cide’ by choosing a potato-stuffed aloo naan bread alongside her chicken khumb murgh tarka with its saffron, garlic and zingy lemon flavour. Jalfrezis can vary from restaurant to restaurant and Naomi was pleased that hers was medium spicy, with a thick tomato sauce that contrasted nicely with the sugary sweet peshwari naan. I kept referring to Rebecca’s chicken murgh sindhi korma as ‘that exciting korma’ because the added lime, tomatoes, chillies and garam masala (ground Indian spices) make the usual korma seem dull in comparison. If you are looking for an authentic dish (not adapted to the British palate), this version of the korma is an original Sindh Pakistan recipe. Feeling full after her carb-overload, Terri decided to call it a night. Rebecca also had to take off, leaving Naomi and me to talk dessert. Aagrah is well known for its friendly staff and owner Liaquat Ali pulled up a chair to discuss our dessert strategy. As we were undecided on what to have, he recommended a selection of three lassis – sweet, salt and mango. The sweet one went down best, although it was a close call as the salt really brought out the yoghurt flavour. We also shared a gulab jaman fusion, a bowl of sponge balls bathed in hot syrup and squares of cold creamy kulfi. If you want a catch-up with friends over some delicious dishes, Aagrah in Doncaster has familiar favourites, as well as more adventurously authentic curries to please every palate. Even your mates with stricter diets can be swayed into a guilt-free, low-fat curry. I for one, went away with a clear conscience and a satisfied stomach.

hat makes the perfect pub? A heady mixture of good beer, wine, food, and friendly staff makes for a winning combination, and is something that The Ship at Bawtry has mastered down to a fine art. First impressions can be everything, and as we stepped into the shelter of The Ship’s welcoming porch – escaping from the blanket of autumn drizzle – we were greeted by walls lined with awards, including Pub Restaurant Winner at Marston’s Pub of the Year Awards 2015 – a sure sign of good things to come. Following a warm welcome from Mandy Wallis, who owns the pub with husband Dave, we headed to a cosy window seat with a pint of Hobgoblin in hand and began browsing the extensive menu. If it’s true hearty pub grub you’re after The Ship can certainly satisfy. The chilly evening called for some real comfort food and my creamy garlic mushroom starter ticked all the right boxes. The generous portion oozed with rich flavoursome sauce and the warm crusty bread was ideal for dipping. My partner opted for the pan-fried black pudding and enjoyed each of the baconwrapped parcels. An onion chutney was the ideal sweet accompaniment and beautifully offset the savoury flavours. We were equally impressed with our mains – a ten-ounce gammon steak, and a beef and potato pie. My hunk of gammon was especially tender and juicy, and came topped with a wedge of fresh, grilled pineapple and a perfectly cooked fried egg. Combined with a
crisp-skinned jacket potato, peas and salad, it was a total hearty indulgence. The Ship’s homemade pies are particularly popular among regulars and my partner’s dish demonstrated exactly why. Brimming with succulent chunks of beef, topped with a rich suet pastry and served with perfectly crisp chips, it was his idea of a perfect meal. For those with a sweet tooth, The Ship offers treats in abundance, with a menu of ‘proper’ hot puds as well as a selection of more contemporary chilled desserts. We chose one of each, a traditional syrup sponge and a banoffee gateau. Evoking childhood memories, the sticky, sweet sponge with vanilla ice cream left me content and nostalgic, whereas my partner’s banoffee gateau was new delicious discovery, with banana-flavoured sponge and layers of luxurious cream. Mandy and Dave are currently celebrating their eighth anniversary at The Ship, and following such success they decided to take on The Blacksmiths Arms at Everton five years ago. If you’re searching for a traditional British pub, with homemade food, a good selection of beer, and a friendly atmosphere, a visit to The Ship will not disappoint.

AAGRAH This may be part of a large collection of family-run Indian restaurants that spreads across Yorkshire, but there is nothing about the Aagrah experience to suggest the uniform blandness of a chain diner. Authentic recipes using fresh, locally sourced ingredients are the order of the day here.
CLUMBER PARK HOTEL The beautiful backdrop of Clumber Park means this hotel and spa makes an instant big impression. Closer inspection does not disappoint with two dining alternatives – the Normanton Inn for relaxed dining and the Courtyard for more formal occasions. Wherever you choose, traditional food with a twist is on the menu.
MUMBAI A friendly welcome and a menu including some unfamiliar dishes makes every trip to this Stainforth restaurant an occasion to remember. Clean flavours, fresh herbs and delicious side dishes made our visit to Mumbai unforgettable.
THE CROWN HOTEL We all know this venue does big events rather well, but the low-lit restaurant is equally suited to more intimate occasions and the menu, including the Crown’s trademark sharing platters, provides flavoursome food served with a flourish.
YASH Since opening two years ago in Retford,Yash has made a big impression on both sides of the Nottinghamshire/Yorkshire border. Flavours are full-on and also extra-healthy as the oil content is considerably less than tradition normally dictates.
GRAND ST LEGER HOTEL This Grade II listed hotel dates back to 1810 and the Paddock Bar is the perfect place to meet friends and unwind before moving on to the plush Carrington’s restaurant where a classic menu is served in a formal but welcoming atmosphere.
ZARA’S The cosy village of Tickhill is enjoying the spice of life thanks to this very popular restaurant. If you have your set favourites but feel ready for a change this is the place to go – they love helping customers expand their boundaries with new, exciting dishes.
ROSSINGTON HALL With the elegance of Chatsworth and an atmosphere of pure escapism to compare with an episode of Downton Abbey, the fabulous restoration of Rossington Hall makes dinner at this grand 19th century house an occasion to remember... and the delicious food matches the setting.

Best Bar/Grill COLEMAN’S PIZZERIA/STEAKHOUSE This new addition to the Bawtry scene has been busy since its opening back in April, and it’s easy to see why. No prizes for guessing what’s on the menu here, but the classic Italian-American style comfort food is full of flavour and delivered with infectious enthusiasm. THE FILLING STATION SMOKEHOUSE Big portions and bold décor play their part at this diner but it’s the quality of the meat and cooking methods that really set it apart. Ribs, pork brisket and wings, cooked in a smoker over hickory chips, bring traditional American smoked and barbecued food to the region. NYC BAR & GRILL Burgers, dogs, ribs and chicken wings are the order of the day here, with a side order of Cajun fries, in a classic New York-style diner setting in the heart of Doncaster. With all sauces and marinades made in-house, there are no short-cuts on this journey into the big bold flavours of the USA. RELISH BAR & GRILL There is a real buzz surrounding this combination of classy, arm-chaired bar and contemporary restaurant with cosy lamps and green leather booths. With regular live music and DJs, a vast cocktail menu, beers from around the world and a crowd-pleasing menu of diner favourites, quiet nights are few and far between.
Best Contemporary CAVIARS An open, theatre-style kitchen, regularly changing seasonal menu and cheerful service have helped to make this smart, friendly restaurant a firm favourite over the last few years. Presentation may be low-key but we found classic cooking at its very best, with an excellent wine list to match. NO. 7 @ THE RUM ROOMS Something new for Doncaster town centre with an innovative menu that includes a fusion of food influences including Indian and Caribbean, an impressive cocktail and rum menu and regular live music, all served up in a contemporary shabby-chic setting. THE OLD WEIGHING ROOM You don’t need to wait for a race meeting to visit The Old Weighing Room at Doncaster Racecourse. This stand-alone restaurant’s striking design and spectacular glass-domed ceiling make a great first impression and the varied dinner menu includes something for everyone. THYME AT BAWTRY Presentation is definitely one of the strong points at Thyme, a delightful café-bistro where every dish leaving the kitchen looks a real picture. From hearty classics like homemade scotch eggs to dazzlingly fresh sea bass, attention to detail is the key to a successful restaurant.
Best Pub Restaurant BLACKSMITH’S ARMS, EVERTON At first glance, the Blacksmith’s looks like your average country pub, but there is more to this Everton establishment than simple food and beer. The Wild Boar Restaurant and Grill has an innovative menu of familiar dishes served with a classy twist. SHIP INN, BAWTRY Good beer and wine, fine food and friendly staff is a winning combination that the staff at The Ship have mastered to a fine art. True hearty pub food, including the always-popular homemade pies and traditional puddings, keep customers coming back for more. WHITE HORSE INN, BARMBY MOOR This traditional local has a bistro-style restaurant with a country pub feel and a menu that features more than your typical pub grub. Fresh fish is delivered regularly, and most of the ingredients in all dishes are locally sourced. The chicken and seafood paella is a real winner.
Best Italian ROCCOS ITALIAN KITCHEN The food is rustic and simple but every Roccos dining experience is memorable. This Tickhill restaurant’s seasonal menu delivers everything from pizza to seafood, risotto and steak at this familyfriendly venue. Children are not just tolerated – they have their own menu including a build-your-own pizza. ZINIZ This taste of Tuscany in a contemporary setting has become a fixture on the Bawtry scene. There is a total commitment to delivering the finest food from that region without compromise. We particularly loved the seafood, and there is a fantastic wine list.

Dining in the grand style There’s a touch of Downton Abbey about the Victorian splendour of Rossington Hall. Words and photography: Phoebe Seymour
T
he elegance of Chatsworth, the feeling of pure escapism when you watch an episode of Downton Abbey… who doesn’t enjoy the history and glamour of a stately home? From the minute I walked through the doors of the 19th century Rossington Hall, I was in awe. Built in 1882, it has had many uses over the years, starting life as a family home before becoming a college for training missionary priests in 1939. In 1953, it was turned into a school for children with special needs and in 2011 it was sold to local couple Gary and Michelle Gee. Although there is still much work to be done, Gary and Michelle have done an amazing job of restoring this huge estate to its former Victorian glory. One member of staff was happy to take me on a tour of the building, pointing out the original dumb waiter and taking me and my partner up the grand staircase to show us the wedding suite. Seated in the library-turned-restaurant, our eyes and ears were in for a treat. As I ate my king scallops on their bed of sweet and salty crisp cabbage a with flakes of salmon and my partner dived into his duck served in three equally delicious ways, we marvelled at the bookcase with its leather-bound spines and at the décor, which is sympathetic to the historic setting. This sensory experience was topped off by the sound of the soothing piano music coming from the lobby next door. The pianist even came round the tables to take requests! My breaded pork fillet was mouthwateringly gorgeous, with slices of apple and

a creamy cider sauce. Manager Kim was on hand to help select a prosecco with undertones of apples and pears that perfectly complemented the dish. My partner’s pesto chicken was just as full of flavour, served with an Italian tomato relish. For dessert, the coffee semifreddo was a light and cooling ice cream, topped with chocolate mousse and a pistachio biscotti. My partner, who has something of a sweet tooth and knows a good dessert when he eats one, declared the sticky toffee pudding with pieces of honeycomb, the best dessert he’s ever had. We were then taken through to the drawing room, with its old-fashioned wallpaper – to sit in big armchairs, listen to the piano music flowing into the room and enjoy our coffees.
What we ate: Amuse bouche Ham hock with piccalilli Starters Seared king scallops, £10.50 Duck three ways, £7.95 Mains Breaded pork fillet, £16.95 Pesto-stuffed chicken, £17.95 Desserts Spiced white coffee semifreddo, £6.95 Sticky toffee pudding, £6.95 Drinks Destinea Sauvignon Blanc (125ml glass), £3.90 Bolla Prosecco Superior (glass), £5.75 Liqueur coffee and chocolate truffles, £5.25 Coffee and chocolate truffles, £2.25 Rossington Hall Great North Road, Doncaster, DN11 0HR Tel: 01302 866822 www.rossingtonhall.co.uk
We ended up staying for hours and wished we could stay in one of the plush hotel rooms upstairs, but eventually we tore ourselves away. Rossington Hall is a stunning destination for a special occasion and I would love to go back for afternoon tea, to wile away the hours once more and continue daydream of glamorous days gone by.

ES Weddings
HOME & AWAY From sun-kissed beach ceremonies to traditional church processions, Eastside weighs up the options of getting married at home or abroad. By Eleanor Hyde.
P
ure white waves break on golden sands, palm trees provide shade from the blazing sun, you gaze into your partner’s eyes and utter those precious words... if this sounds like your dream wedding then going abroad is definitely for you. On the other hand, language barriers and the fear of coming home to find that your marriage isn’t legally binding are probably things you would much rather avoid. Nevertheless, over 850,000 couples are expected to shun rainy England for nuptials in the sun this year. The main reasons for this trend seem to be lower costs, fewer guests (though you do run the risk of alienating distant cousins) and being able to combine your wedding with your hen/stag do as well as your honeymoon. So how easy is it to plan your big day compared to closer to home?

Getting married abroad The best place to start if you’re organising a wedding abroad is to contact a travel agent. Winter, beach and luxury weddings are just a few choices, making this a slightly more challenging decision than simply choosing the local village church. Once you’ve decided what sort of wedding you’d like and where, a good travel agency should do the leg work for you, making it almost as easy as saying ‘I do’. A wedding coordinator is usually included in the holiday wedding package price and, being based in your chosen hotel or resort, they come fully equipped with expert local knowledge and information about the legalities of getting married abroad. You’ll be safe in the knowledge that you won’t come home to discover you’re still officially single. Some guests may not be able to afford flights, but it may well be that a smaller wedding of 15-20 close family and friends is preferable. By marrying abroad you may even choose to be generous, partially funding some or all of your guest’s flights. Many guests treat a wedding abroad as a holiday, creating a week-long wedding celebration they and you will never forget. However, it is worth considering whether spending an entire week with family is your dream start to married life. So just how much will a wedding abroad set you back? Packages differ in cost depending on where you go, how long you go for and what is included, but the following two examples show how inexpensive they can be. A wedding package available in Mexico including flowers, wine for 40 people, dinner for two, couple massages, a minister and the marriage certificate in the local language starts from £769. A wedding package for Disneyland Florida including a six-hour limousine service, organist for the ceremony, violinist for the reception, a two-tiered cake, champagne, photographer and flowers, starts from £3,500. Of course, there will probably be additional costs, but with reports of the average UK wedding totalling £20,000, it’s easy to see why weddings abroad are proving so popular.
Case Study 2: Kelly recently married Jonathan Mann at Halifax Hall, Sheffield Did you ever consider getting married abroad? I would have considered it but Jonathan wanted to marry in Sheffield so we could have a big wedding and all our family and friends could come. What do you think are the benefits of having a British wedding? We were able to plan everything ourselves and could view venues easily. It also meant we could use companies that we knew were reliable. The flowers were arranged by the same people that my sister used for her wedding. Did you have any concerns about getting married in Britain? I suppose the weather is something you can never guarantee here, but it couldn’t have ruined our day. When we were having our photographs taken it drizzled a bit, but we really didn’t mind; it’s all just part of it. We had some gorgeous weather on our honeymoon in Florida – as well as some tropical storms – and had a fantastic time.
www.regionalmagazine.co.uk
Case Study 1: Lucy recently married husband Damian Read in Marmari, Greece Why did you decide to marry abroad? A lot of our friends had already got married in Sheffield and there are only so many available venues in the area. We’d always discussed getting married abroad and just wanted something a bit different. How did friends and family react? My mum was a bit concerned at first because it’s a big ask for people to come away for a week when the wedding is only a one-day event, but it was nice because it ended up just being prettymuch all family. Was there anything you had to consider special? We had to think about dresses and outfits, because of the weather, and I was a bit nervous about not being able to view things beforehand like you would in England. You also don’t arrange a lot – like booking flowers, hair and makeup – until you’re there. But we’d been in touch with the wedding coordinator by email beforehand, and they do weddings every day, so we had faith everything would go to plan.
Getting married at home So what are the advantages of having a wedding closer to home? The obvious bonus is that you can have a larger wedding in which the majority of your family and friends can attend. Often when a couple marries abroad, they feel obliged to host an at-home reception too, to include those that weren’t able to make it. This adds a big cost onto what might have started as a cheap wedding – pointless when you could have held the wedding at home in the first place. For those who choose to stay at home but still want an alternative to the traditional church or registry office, there are many options. Grand stately homes are particularly popular, as are more relaxed outdoor weddings, but if you want to go for something a bit more unusual, how about a shark aquarium or a whisky vault? Unsurprisingly, these offbeat options come with a hefty price tag; a Yorkshire castle costs over £5,000 to hire, and a woodland wedding over £4,000 depending on the add-ons. Wedding planners in the UK cost around £1,500-2,000 depending on the size of your wedding. Though they do come with a lot of expert knowledge and can guide you through every step of the process, ten to 15 per cent of your wedding budget is a lot to spend on one person.

Everyone is going short! Short hairstyles are everywhere this season. Gone are the times when long hair ruled the red carpet, now it's about short hair cuts on your favourite A-list women. As proved by some of the coolest women in Hollywood, ditching longer locks and going for that short haircut is the new chic way to update your look. Not only is a new season the perfect time to reinvent your hair, it's a great way to get your damaged hair back in baby soft condition. This year's hottest short hairstyles are edgier and more modern than in years past. Stylish looks include long bangs with shorter sides, mussy shags and long bobs and even the pompadour, which some of the hottest celebrities of today are pulling off.

ES Eating Out
Words: Phoebe Seymour
The whole package Drink, dance and dine... Cubana offers the ultimate night out.
I
f there’s one thing Cuba knows best, it’s how to throw a good party. Home to salsa dancing, rum and a cultural fusion of cuisines, the best of this nation is all under one roof – in Sheffield. My last trip to Cubana was when it was still on Trippet Lane, so I was excited to sample the tapas and cocktails at their relatively new home in Leopold Square. Cubana has been at this stylish location for almost a year and if the busy downstairs bar and booked-up restaurant upstairs are anything to go by, the move has been a raving success. Absorbing the colourful, courtyard-style setting, my partner and I got our Friday fiesta started with a Brazilian Mojito, made with sugarcane spirit cachaça instead of rum, and a Verry Berry Jerry cocktail, made with Sailor Jerry and fruity Chambord. The tapas menu had a guide for helping you decide how many dishes to go for. Deciding we were “hungry” on the scale, we went with four each. After sharing a Pan de Ajo Calentito (garlic bread), I tucked into the Gambas Pil Pil (prawns in garlic and olive oil), Patatas Dulces y Pimientos (roasted sweet potatoes and red peppers), Pincho Verduras (grilled Mediterranean vegetable skewer) and the Chorizo y Huevo con Patatas (chorizo and potatoes topped with a fried egg). Try saying all that after a few cocktails! The prawns were juicy with a buttery flavour, whilst my mountain of sweet potatoes was balanced by spicy chilli. The marinated vegetable skewer, including blackened
70
aubergines and courgettes, had a lemony tang, whilst the chorizo and potatoes dipped in the fried egg reminded me of a fried breakfast with a Spanish twist. All together, this was an exciting and varied feast full of many flavours. My partner had the Mozzarella y Jamón (buffalo mozzarella wrapped in Parma ham), Salteado de Champiñones al Ajillo (sautéed mixed mushrooms with garlic and chilli), Pincho de Pollo (grilled chicken skewer) and the Pollo y Chorizo (chicken and chorizo in a creamy tomato sauce). He especially enjoyed the mascarponestyle sauce on his chicken and chorizo and the portions of mozzarella wrapped in ham, comparing them to “cheese-filled pigs in blankets”. I had a mouthful of the chicken skewer, which was barbecued to perfection and made a great summer dish. My partner had the raspberry cheesecake to finish – a great recommendation by our waiter Stuart – whilst I had the decadent chocolate cake with moist layers of chocolate and fudge. My partner washed this down with a Brazilian liqueur coffee with kahlua and fiery brandy, whilst I had the smoother Cuban liqueur coffee with dark rum. By this point, a man was serenading diners with his saxophone and the party was just getting started downstairs with people swaying to traditional salsa and Latino club tunes. Owner Adrian’s ethos is “about providing the whole package when it comes to a night out”. With a gorgeous menu, exciting cocktails and regular live music events, Cubana sure does deliver.

The Texas Scramble event was organised by John Fairhurst in memory of his son, Richard, who died suddenly in 2010, aged just 45. John Fairhurst presented a cheque to Julie Calender, secretary of the BHF’s local fundraising branch, saying: “We all know someone that’s been affected by heart disease. It’s great to know that our efforts will make a difference in helping to fight for every heartbeat.” www.bhf.org.uk.
