The end of summer celebration was hugely popular

Mouth-watering line-up CELEBRATING THE END OF SUMMER WAS THE PERFECT TIME TO LAUNCH A NEW MENU AT OTTO BAR & KITCHEN. s the summer comes to an end and we all brace ourselves for the dark nights, what better way to perk people up than to find a reason to celebrate. That’s exactly what the team at OTTO Bar & Kitchen did last month when they decided to plan the lovely ‘Farewell to Summer’ event, and the turnout was fantastic. With a loyal community of locals, the outside area was fabulous. There were beer tables and bunting, cake and coffee stalls, as well as a marquee which housed the three different live music sessions playing throughout the afternoon. The tables were full of families and couples enjoying food samples and endless trays of free Prosecco (adults only of course). The bustle of chat, laughter and the saxophone filled the air, not forgetting the regular rounds of applause. The vibe was inviting and it encouraged the

A

crowd to grow throughout the afternoon, with people even returning after a walk. This event was a real celebration for the lovely village of Sprotbrough, giving the villagers an afternoon to congregate and support OTTO Bar & Kitchen on what would otherwise have been a quiet Sunday doing nothing much. OTTO Bar & Kitchen put on a great event, showcasing their exciting new menu, produced by their astounding new head chef. Dean Wade comes with the type of credentials and experience you would expect of a high profile city centre restaurant. Not what you normally think of when in a village setting, however OTTO Bar & Kitchen are setting themselves apart as a stand-out establishment yet again. The menu makes for mouth-watering reading. It still follows a similar vibe to the

previous menu, with tapas, pizzas and burgers but there is something more refined and thoughtful about its offering. With dishes like the crispy duck and watermelon salad served with cashews, pak choi and a ponzu dressing, beer stewed pork sausages and the full rack of BBQ ribs served with golden crispy onions. Then there is the execution, which has been taken to the next level with rich sophisticated flavours that obviously come from Dean’s many years of classic training. The menu and food were well received with people ordering all afternoon and offering praise to the staff and to Dean himself. Customers were quoted as saying: ‘Fab music and excellent food well done to you all.’ ‘Thank you guys for all your hard work today.’ ‘Fantastic family atmosphere and stunning food. Thanks.’ So it’s farewell to summer, and a massive hello to autumn, with lots of trips to OTTO Bar & Kitchen so that you can eat your way through every dish on their new menu. Bring it on! RHIANA HUGHES MEETS A COUPLE WHO HAVE TURNED OUR HALLOWE’EN FASCINATION FOR THE COLOURFUL VEGETABLE WITH THE SOFT CENTRE INTO A FUN FESTIVAL FOR ALL THE FAMILY.

umpkins. Soon those melon-sized orange things will be everywhere as Halloween fast approaches. It feel like they’ve always been a UK tradition, and yet, many of us will look back at our childhoods and remember a time when they were nowhere to be seen. Indeed – many of us remember carrying lanterns of a very different kind. In the past, parents would painstakingly carve out turnips and place small candles inside. Some still do, but since Brits have embraced Halloween as passionately as the Americans do, pumpkins are more in abundance than ever before. And with hard exteriors and soft centres, they’re seemingly destined to be lanterns. Pumpkins may not seem exotic in this day and age, where fruits and vegetables from all over the world are as accessible as British grown crops, but it is believed that seeds from related plants originated in Mexico between 7000 and 5500BC. References to pumpkins date back many centuries and the name ‘pumpkin’ originated from the Greek word ‘pepon’, which translates as large melon. By the 20th century, pumpkins were synonymous with the harvest season in North America, and soon became a staple element of Halloween celebrations. Of course, Halloween itself originated with the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, but us Brits only fully embraced pumpkins from our American cousins some 20 years ago. And now, just as Christmas tree farms pop up all over the UK during the festive season, pumpkin farms are doing the same on the run up to Halloween. Farmer Copley’s is one of the latest farms to join the trend and have been running their pumpkin festival for a number of years. ‘The UK’s Largest Pumpkin Festival’ is back, and Farmer Copley’s guarantee that this year’s festivities will be bigger and better than ever before. This year’s unusually hot summer has provided the perfect climate for growing pumpkins, and Farmer Copley’s have planted over 120,000 pumpkin plants of every shape, size and colour to make sure you can find the

P

perfect pumpkin for you. Farmer Copley’s will have red, green, blue, white, yellow, black and of course orange pumpkins waiting for you, and they’ve even got some warty pumpkins which are great if you’re wanting to get creative with your carving skills and put a wicked witch out on your doorstep. The farm has dedicated carving tents for you to get to work in, and they’ve got helpers on site to take off the lid and clean up the mess, so your kitchen doesn’t have to be left smelling of pumpkin for days after you’re done.

Pumpkins start from £3.50 and go up to £10 for the largest ones which even the strongest pumpkin pickers will need a wheelbarrow to get to the car! While a lot of fun is to be had scouring the farm for your perfect Halloween lantern, there’s lots more to get involved with at the festival. The festival has plenty of activities for all the family to take part in, from jumping on the Bucking Pumpkin to the Tractor Barrel Ride and the Teacups, to face painting and Halloween pot painting. The ‘Not So Wicked Witch’ will be there to tell stories throughout the day with her fellow witches, and the Pumpkin Princess will be waiting to meet you and hoping you’ll help her find her perfect pumpkin.

There’s also a free to enter fancy dress parade each day at 2.30pm (don’t worry, every child gets a prize) and there are plenty of places to grab a bite to eat. There’s no booking needed and no entry fee to pay for the festival, so it’s perfect if you’re looking for a good value family day out this autumn. While entry into the festival is free, there are a limited number of VIP – Very Important Pumpkin cards available for £30. These secure you priority parking, a pumpkin (up to 10kg), carving of your pumpkin, a go on their assault course, corn cannon, tractor barrel ride, teacups, swing boat and a delicious toffee apple. Visiting Farmer Copley’s for the Pumpkin Festival not only creates a fantastic day out for all the family, but it’s also a great way to find out more about British agriculture and where our food comes from. The farm has been in the Copley family for over 140 years, and current owners Robert and Heather Copley are responsible for turning it into the well-loved attraction it is today. The farm started out as a dairy farm, then changed to arable before Robert brought back livestock. The couple developed Farmer Copley’s and added their Farm Shop, Moo Café, Beast functions and their events as in today’s modern agricultural industry the farm was too small to support a family, and this has helped them as well as their community. Farmer Copley’s has received a Certificate of Excellence from TripAdvisor, and visitors to the farm can’t help but fall in love and keep coming back. So put on your wellies, wrap up warm and join the fun on the farm. Farmer Copley’s Pumpkin Festival will be open the first two weekends in October, and every day from 21st – 31st October from 10am-4pm. To secure a VIP card, contact the farm via email. Yes – the nights are longer, but with crisp leaves in gorgeous hues of oranges, yellows and browns, there are plenty of warm colours around to brighten our days and inspire our homes. Bring the autumnal look indoors with leaf prints and warm shades, especially those items we tend to use more in the colder months such as thick blankets and teapots. Greater variety MORE CHOICE, MORE LOOKS, MORE COLOURS AND MORE INNOVATION AT YORKSHIRE WINDOWS. orkshire Windows is going into autumn 2018 with a new range of products aimed at taking the uPVC window and door industry into a new era of design excellence. The Rotherham based company, which also has a main visitor showroom at Ferndale Garden Centre in Dronfield, is already the region’s sole supplier of Smartglass Dynamic, the first automatically self-tinting, glass technology for conservatories, orangeries and other glazing elements. And the company also has a whole range of products directed at meeting the needs of an increasingly discerning and adventurous market. Thinking about adding some exciting new touches to your home? Just take a look at the Yorkshire Windows range of windows, doors, French doors, bi-fold doors and conservatories – where traditional white is definitely no longer the only colour option. The latest generation of woodgrain foils – available in 26 colours from stock and with hundreds more available on request – means that colour is set to transform the market, with Yorkshire Windows leading the way. “For too many years the choice was limited to simple white but more discerning home owners are wanting a much greater variety and freedom than ever before,” says managing director Ian Chester. “The exciting range of colours is really one of the biggest breakthroughs the industry has seen and at Yorkshire Windows we are proud to be offering some outstanding choices. “Heritage shades and pastel colours are proving extremely popular, especially with people trying to maintain the period feel of older properties, where the standard white has so often in the past proved to be unsuitable.” Another new and revolutionary approach to home improvement available through

Yorkshire Windows is the glazed veranda. The glazed veranda trend is increasingly popular across Europe but is only just beginning to make an impression in the UK, with Yorkshire Windows predicting a rise in interest in the coming months. Featuring Smartglass technology, a veranda offers an alternative to the traditional conservatory. In the middle of summer Smartglass Dynamic will change from a clear state in the morning to a darker blue during the day where solar control and light shading is needed most, yet as the unit cools it will go back to clear at the end of the day and into the night, making it perfect for veranda use. “With our full range of anti-glare and self cleaning glass, this really can be a stylish addition to any style of property and is an ideal solution for homes where there is only limited outdoor space,” says Ian. “And in a British summer where you can be enjoying the sun one minute and sheltering from the rain the next, there’s no need to run for cover when you’re enjoying the pleasure of this new twist on a very traditional concept.” Ian adds that the market’s changing approach to home improvement is also having a major impact on the business. “People no longer have their windows

changed out of necessity,” he says. “They change them for the experience, because they want a look in line with constantly changing trends and tastes.” Other areas that have improved in the past few years include such increasingly important features as energy efficiency and protection from the elements – including the patented high performance multifunctional weather seal – sound-proofing and security. With the demands of conservation areas in mind, Yorkshire Windows also has a range of flush sash windows and doors that replicate the appearance and style of traditional timber windows with wood grain finish, monkey tail handles and Georgian bar options. “Over the last three years in particular, the industry has really advanced and much more thought is going into the fact that people now want choice, the customer is much more discerning and wants to be involved in design decisions because it is their property and their vision,” says Ian. “We believe that at Yorkshire Windows we are ready to face the challenges of this quickly advancing market with a range of products and ideas that will add distinction to any home.” For more about Yorkshire Windows visit www.yorkshirewindows.com, email sales@yorkshirewindows.com or call 0800 591155.

New MG adds a touch of class MG – synonymous for building British sports cars a few decades ago – has built a new version of their current best-selling model, the MG3. Back when the MG3 was first released, it was a supermini for those wanting to stand out from the supermini crowd, wanting to not conform to the usual Polo, Fabia, Fiesta gang. But now, this is a car definitely worth considering. Every MG3 comes with a seven-year/80,000-mile warranty, showing us that MG believes in the quality of its products. It’s also one of the most spacious superminis on the market, with boot space measuring at 285-litres. WHETHER YOU’RE THERE FOR DINNER, A WEDDING OR AN OVERNIGHT STAY, ROSSINGTON HALL’S REPUTATION IS SECOND TO NONE. BY CHRIS WILSON.

ver the last few years Rossington Hall, a spectacular restored Victorian stately home nestling in 250 acres of unspoilt countryside, has been one of the best-kept secrets in the region. Not any longer. A year after it opened as a 24/7 luxury hotel, word has spread. The demand for weddings is booming, while discerning business travellers and holiday makers have discovered and instantly fallen under the spell of this luxurious location. Meanwhile for local people a dining operation that stretches from a la carte signature and tasting menus to afternoon teas, Sunday lunch, breakfasts and ‘posh’ takes on family classics like fish and chips and the Rossington Hall burger, means the restaurant is always busy. So whether it’s lunch with the girls, a

midweek family tea or a romantic meal for two, dining at Rossington Hall will always be a special occasion. And for long-term staff members who remember when Rossington Hall opened as a restaurant only in 2012, quiet days are a distant dream. There are currently 17 guest bedrooms, and the hotel was fully booked throughout the recent St Leger Festival. And with the next stage of redevelopment moving along smoothly, that number will increase to 21 by the end of the year. From blushing brides to business travellers, the opulent sense of style on display at Rossington Hall means it has the instant ‘wow’ factor for everyone. Built in 1882 this Victorian grade II listed building looks like it has emerged from the pages of a romantic gothic novel. From the moment you step

inside to see the immaculately restored furnishings, with grand bespoke chandeliers, gorgeous period patterned wallpaper and suitably lavish antiques and objet d’art in every room, it’s impossible to resist falling under its spell. As a wedding venue it’s hard to beat, both inside and out. Beautifully landscaped gardens, lush lawns and a smart gravel approach to the main house means this is the perfect setting for those all-important wedding photographs. The average wedding party at Rossington Hall consists of 100 guests but they can cater for up to 140 and their events team is standing by to do all the heavy lifting, leaving you to enjoy your day. “Let us worry about the logistics,” is their motto. And for staying guests the rooms are large, light and airy with fantastic views over the

250-acre estate and speciality rooms to cater for families and, of course, a glorious bridal suite. There is at least one wedding a week at Rossington Hall all year round and throughout August, the peak time for summer weddings, every wedding was exclusive. Rossington Hall will never stage more than one wedding on any given day, so the option is always there for every wedding party to book out the entire hotel exclusively for your party. So there’s no danger of ‘strangers’ hovering at the drinks reception or crashing the disco! Meanwhile there is an increasing amount of repeat business coming from jaded business travellers who have been thrilled to discover such a beautiful hotel, in such a quiet and relaxed setting and yet so close to Doncaster and only six miles from Doncaster Robin Hood Airport. The next tranche of hotel rooms, currently being worked on, will be finished soon with business guests in mind – but of course, all the renovations are entirely in keeping with this sensational Grade II listed building. There has also been an upsurge in visits from people using the hotel as a base for holidays in Yorkshire, including several guests

jetting in from Amsterdam recently for a few days of rest and recreation in God’s own county. With so much going on it’s hard to remember that Rossington Hall hasn’t always been so easy on the eye and might easily have been lost for good. After being built as a family home, it had a chequered past including spells as a college for missionary priests and a boarding school, and it had fallen into considerable disrepair before local businessman Gary Gee rescued it from many decades of neglect when he bought it in 2011. The project is ongoing with plans for a European Tour standard golf course with club house and leisure facilities and further renovation of the historic Gate House on the horizon. But for now Rossington Hall is open all year round and firing on all cylinders. As those happy hotel guests checking out after the St Leger Festival would testify, the secret is well and truly out. Tribal styles DEMONSTRATING HOW FAR THEY’VE PROGRESSED SINCE FIRST OPENING, THE TEAM AT SAKS DONCASTER ENTERED THE BRITISH HAIRDRESSING AWARDS FOR THE FIRST TIME. FIND OUT HOW THEY GOT ON...

elebrating its seventh year this October, Saks Doncaster was opened in 2011 by Paul and Rebecca Calladine. The couple both started hairdressing at 17 and have been constantly learning and developing their skills ever since. And when it came time to open their own salon, they knew that they wanted to join the Saks family. Saks Doncaster has already won the prestigious L’Oreal Colour Trophy and have had the honour of being featured in Vogue, so they’ve already cemented their place up there with the best in British hairdressing. This year, the team at Saks wanted to push themselves even further, and they made their first ever entry into the British Hairdressing Awards (BHA). The British Hairdressing Awards started in 1985 and were launched to recognise and

reward hairdressers who were pushing the boundaries in their field and setting a precedent for others to follow. Each year, hairdressers from across the country dedicate months of hard work to preparing their entries and photographing the best of their work. The awards are serious business, and all entries are judged by impartial, distinguished individuals before the results are collated by an independent firm of auditors. There are nine regional categories and six specialist categories that recognise the skills required in specific areas such as mens, afro, artistic team and the Schwarzkopf Professional British Colour Technician of the Year award. This year, Saks have been exploring their creative bounds, taking hairdressing at the salon to a new level, celebrating how far they’ve come since they first opened. While

of course they offer the services you’d expect from a salon, their entry into the BHA really shows just what they’re capable of. Saks set themselves a tribal theme for their styles, incorporating a lot of braiding and metal jewellery into their looks and pairing each with athleisure wear, presenting a comfortable, wearable look to the judges in favour of the more typical formalwear you often see in beauty shots. Straight away when looking at their designs you can see the intricate work and detail that went into creating each hairstyle, and it’s clear that Saks have much more to offer than just a cut and blow dry. By entering competitions like the British Hairdressing Awards, the team at Saks are ensuring that they’re always kept on their toes and forced to think outside the box, and this is an attitude instilled in their staff from their

first day of training. “Training is everything at Saks and we love that our team learn Saks techniques and trends from Saks Art Team. We get opportunities to send them to assist Saks Art Team backstage at events such as London Fashion Week. It’s great for inspiration, motivation and personal development. We also receive great management training.” Paul and Rebecca initially chose to open a Saks salon due to Saks’ brilliant reputation as one of the UK’s favourite hair and beauty franchise groups. Having backing from an established brand allowed them the opportunity to not only start out with a recognisable name that the customers already had trust in, but also to work with some of the best names in hair. With products from Kérastase, L’Oreal Professionnel and Redken and tools from ghd and their own Saksessories, the team at Saks create hairstyles that rival the most popular

celebrity looks. The Saks Art Team set the standard at Saks, training all of their stylists and making sure that they’re all experts in their own rights. Paul is part of the Art Team, giving regular advice on what’s best for hair as well as practical expert tips to make sure his customers get those Instagram perfect locks in real life. It’s the dedication that the team at Saks Doncaster have to their art that allowed them to grow to a place where they felt entering the British Hair Awards was their next natural step. Although this time they weren’t the North-East winners, who’s to say that one day they won’t take their place up on stage at hairdressing’s biggest night of the year?

Paintball business is a hit

Half of people born after 1960 will succumb to the big ‘C’ – cancer. And, with such alarming statistics and personal experience of how the illness can devastate families, the Doncaster based couple behind the Equinox Ball is calling Memories and achievements - a Firefly Van named on the local community for sponsorship, after the people who inspired Equinox auction and raffle prizes to raise money for Doncaster based Firefly and Cancer Research UK. Equinox, a charity created by Sarah and Paul Mullen, has raised over £200,000 for the charities since its inception through the annual ball, charity walks and events, and the inaugural ‘Bring your Breastie’ event this year, where ladies bared (almost) all, and garnered social media attention from Auckley to Australia. “Together we have achieved great things and that is down to the community spirit of people in Doncaster and South Yorkshire who have helped to support the events and to give so generously,” said Sarah Mullen, founder of Equinox. “Now, as the ball looms closer, we call on families, groups of friends and local businesses to donate a prize that can be utilised to raise more money for such worthwhile causes which an ever-increasing number are benefitting from.” This year’s white themed ball will be held at Doncaster Deaf College on Saturday 10 November. In the past, each event has generated over £50,000, and this year, it is hoped to raise a similar amount to support Firefly in its vital community programme and cancer Research UK in its latest research programme as it tackles the big four – brain, lung, pancreatic and oesophageal cancer. To support the ball through a sponsorship package or to donate a raffle or auction prize, contact Sarah Mullen on equinoxball@gmail.com.

The family-run company opened its doors in 1999 and has grown to be Europe’s biggest Paintball Centre. They have welcomed over 1million visitors, from across the UK, Europe and further afield. He will be studying a Musical Theatre degree starting this month. The auditioning

process for a place at Mountview is extremely tough and competitive. This year there were over 4,000 applicants and following a series of auditions, 19 female and 19 male students were accepted and Max was thrilled to learn that he was one of them. Don't worry though - Max will be coming home some weekends to perform with

The Bowkers. Max has also been awarded a DADA (Dance and Drama Award) which helps reduce his academy fees. However, the current statutory rules state that he cannot apply for a student loan to cover any costs. So he is having to self-fund his entire three years at Mountview. Max has now opened a Go Fund Me page to help raise funds. To help Max, visit www.gofundme.com/maxbowker039s-drama-school-fund.

Labour of love HATFIELD’S NEW VENUE, EDWINS, IS A STYLISH PLACE FOR A COFFEE, A RELAXED MEAL OR EVEN AN OVERNIGHT STAY. rom morning coffees to lunches to a place to hang out with friends over pizza and a glass of wine, Edwins is the restaurant that the lovely village of Hatfield has been crying out for. Owners Helen and Richard Elworthy and Shane Miller and Rachel Riches share a real passion for food, along with the conviction that they have found the perfect location for a new venue that is very much a labour of love. After a successful if frantic opening last month, an experienced and enthusiastic team is in place to deliver a dazzling menu of Yorkshire fayre with an Italian twist. These include head chef John Hacker, with over 20 years’ experience in all aspects of food, and Suzy Walker, who has been working for the same period in restaurant and bar management in and around Doncaster. So what’s on the menu? Food-wise pizzas, sharing platters and casual dining is the order of the day, with a more refined evening ‘specials’ menu. Drinks include a massive range of gins and spirits, some really good Italian wines and Peroni on draft. For the owners, surrounding themselves with such key team members, who are fully versed in the practicalities of running a successful day-into-night dining space, has been one of the key factors behind a successful launch. Helen said: “Our backgrounds are in property development but with a real passion for food so opening Edwins is like a dream come true; having knowledge of the property

F

market we found the perfect spot to open our first restaurant.” The whole site has taken 12 months of building and designing from start to finish and had to be completely re-built from scratch. From looking and buying to the grand opening it was a two-year project, but the owners are really happy with the results. They are particularly pleased with the upstairs rooms, which complement the restaurant and bar area perfectly, allowing a longer stay and overnight accommodation in luxurious and generous rooms. Having found their perfect venue the team at Edwins is ready to offer a warm welcome to a venture that already looks like a special place to bring a partner or friends for some nice food and drink in an upbeat environment... a place to see and be seen. Helen adds: “We are very excited to be in Hatfield and to be bringing a real buzz to the area, and with other establishments and further plans for expansion we are hoping to help Hatfield become a new mini-Bawtry and a place that people want to visit.” In the more immediate future there’s a busy autumn programme being mapped out, including themed events for Halloween and bonfire night, gin tastings and special menus. And, of course, with the festive season just around the corner, Christmas menus will be available soon. Yorkshire Caravans of Bawtry donate caravan to sixth form students A special needs school in the East Riding of Yorkshire is able to support its students, equipping them with skills for life, after Yorkshire Caravans of Bawtry donated a caravan. Cambridge Park Academy in Grimsby was delighted to receive a pre-owned Swift Challenger Caravan from Yorkshire Caravans in Bawtry to help its sixth form special needs students, just days after making a speculative phone call to the hugely popular Yorkshirebased, family-owned caravan company. “We are absolutely overjoyed and this is truly special for the students at our school and will make a significant difference to the types of studies we can provide and the skills they can learn to support them in their everyday independent lives,” said Claire Abel, Cambridge Park Academy. “We are most appreciative to the Yorkshire Caravan team and look forward to sharing our progress with them as the caravan begins to take shape.” The students, whose studies encompass furniture restorations, catering, hair, beauty and life skills will convert the caravan into a student shop. Andrew Whittaker, managing director of Yorkshire Caravans of Bawtry said: “We happened to have this caravan in store that needed a little bit of ‘TLC’ and it suited the needs of the students perfectly supporting their project. We hope it gives them many hours of enjoyment and we look forward to seeing the restoration whilst it is underway and once it is completed.” Yorkshire Caravans, Doncaster Road, Bawtry, DN10 6DG. Confetti

It’s all about you With the average age at which couples marry getting higher, we look at ‘older’ brides and things they need to consider when planning their big day. By Rhiana Hughes.

W

hile the overall number of marriages in the UK has been steadily declining over recent years, the number of marriages at older ages is increasing, as is the age at which men and women are choosing to settle down. Research has shown that the average age for men to marry today is 37.5, while women are marrying slightly younger at 35.1. But does the age at which you decide to get married change your big day? What really is an ‘older bride’? Not too long ago, you’d have been considered an older bride if you were walking down the aisle at any age over 23. And if you were over 30, forget it… you were well and truly on the shelf. While this isn’t the case anymore, what many consider to be an older bride really isn’t very old at all. Though the average age for women to marry is 35, you might find that you’re considered an older or ‘mature’ bride as soon as you’re past the age of 27. Whether you’re 27 or 77 though, you can still have your wedding on your terms, no matter why you’re choosing to marry a bit later on. Why get married later in life? There are plenty of reasons as to why the age at which women are marrying is increasing, and no two situations are identical. Whether you’ve chosen to wait until you’re financially secure, whether you were widowed, or whether it’s simply your second (maybe even third or fourth) marriage, your wedding day will still be one of the most special days of your life. The cost of weddings is at an all-time high, so couples are giving themselves more time to save up for their big day, and with less pressure coming from families to get married, marriage is now the informed choice of couples who want to demonstrate their commitment to one another. Research actually suggests that those who marry earlier in life may face greater challenges, as they could struggle with the responsibilities of starting a family at a

relatively early age and it could be harder for them to reach any educational or career goals that they’ve set for themselves. Getting married later in life means that the chances of you having already achieved these goals is much higher. Not your first time down the aisle? Whether it’s your first, second, third or even eighth marriage, your wedding day will still be just as important to you, and who says you’ve even got to walk down the aisle this time? There is no rule book that says you have to stick to tradition, and getting remarried might actually give you an excuse to have a wedding that caters more to your personality, rather than hosting a wedding that’s more about your guests than yourself. Planning a wedding if it’s not your first time round could seem quite daunting; will your guests be as enthusiastic? Can you still register for gifts? How big should your bridal party be? Are you going to invite ex-partners? What should you wear? Where should you have the ceremony? These are all questions that will come up, if not in your own head, likely asked by other people. There is no reason though, that you can’t still enjoy the process of planning your nuptials. Try not to worry about what others will think of your big day, as it’s a day that above all else, should be enjoyed by you and your husband-to-be. If you can’t decide whether or not to invite an ex-partner, think about whether or not you’ll be comfortable with them there. If you feel uncomfortable registering for gifts, why not set up a wishing well so people can choose to contribute towards your honeymoon? Really, there shouldn’t be any problem that can’t be solved by thinking ‘what will make myself and my partner happy?’ There are still a few things to consider when getting remarried though. When planning the event with your partner, be careful to avoid saying things like ‘I did that last time’ or ‘when I married…’ as you don’t want your partner to feel that your day is

being compared to your last wedding. This is especially true when it comes to your vows. If you’re choosing to write your own vows, steer clear of talking about how you used to feel before you met your significant other, instead focus on how they make you feel now. Not only will this highlight the fact that you’re still feeling this way, but it’ll avoid any awkwardness if you did choose to invite your ex! Going to the chapel? It can take a while to find the perfect place to hold your wedding celebrations, so before you embark on the mammoth task of sifting through magazines and endless webpages, make sure you have an idea of what you want from a venue. If it’s a religious ceremony you were hoping for, make sure you check that this is an option for you, especially if it’s not your first marriage as some churches won’t perform religious ceremonies if you’ve been through a divorce. If it is the case that you can’t have a church wedding, consider getting married at your local registry office before heading to your church for a blessing instead. It doesn’t have to be a white wedding… …but it can be if you want it to be. Don’t think that because you’re not as young as you once were that you can’t wear white on your wedding day. Many young and first-time brides are wearing colour, so there’s no reason you can’t go for a classic look. Getting married as an ‘older bride’ gives you more freedom when it comes to picking your outfit as there will likely be less of a preconceived idea of what you should wear coming from your guests. What’s important is that you feel comfortable and go for something that suits you and your individual style, be it a white gown, a blush mini dress or a champagne jumpsuit, you know best what looks good on you, so don’t let others influence your decision.

Austerfield and William Brewster from nearby Scrooby. So when you’re embarking on the great adventure that is married life, where better to start the journey than with a night in the Bradford, Butten, Brewster or Billington Suites. Luxury comes as standard in these rooms, making them the perfect ‘first night’ setting for the honeymoon couple. But of course you don’t have to be getting married to enjoy the superb hospitality and professionalism on offer at the Mayflower. From birthdays to anniversaries to reunions, all manners of party gatherings are catered for. Meanwhile away from the function suites the Mayflower’s bar and eatery themed nights also continue to go from strength to strength with grill nights on Monday being particularly popular, along with their great three-course Sunday lunches, which are great for all the family. LOOKING FOR A VENUE FOR YOUR BIG DAY? KIRSTEN LESLIE-IBBOTSON TELLS US HOW THE CROWN HOTEL IN BAWTRY HELPED HER PLAN THE PERFECT WEDDING RECEPTION. lanning a wedding is said to be one of the most stressful life events we can experience, which is why Ryan Ibbotson and Kirsten Leslie-Ibbotson were amazed by the support and service they received when they chose to have their wedding reception at The Crown Hotel, Bawtry. “The whole events team on the lead up to the day were fantastic,” says Kirsten. “They were so accommodating with everything. Tony our coordinator on the day was especially, and made everything run smoothly. He made sure we knew where we needed to be at the right times and that we ate something. It was just that attention to detail.” Kirsten and Ryan had been together since meeting at school. The couple had been together for six years and were living in London when Ryan popped the question and whisked her to the top of The Shard for a celebratory drink. The couple moved back to Doncaster soon after, and wanting to find a venue that was local to all their friends and family and would take care of the finer details, The Crown Hotel made for a strong contender.

“It was just perfect as soon as we walked in. The venue, the garden at the back, and the menu all looked lovely. We went to a few venues before, but it was The Crown Hotel that stood out the most. “We chose the Simply Crown Wedding Package. That includes the food and a drinks package. They also give you a brochure with recommended photographers and bands. We chose the band and the DJ was provided by The Crown Hotel. The decorations were by a separate company, but were also included. “I’d done my own table plans, name cards and table numbers because we had a London tube station theme, so we just added those. Then we had a red London bus that took us from the church in Sprotbrough to The Crown.” On 28 July 2018, The Crown had literally rolled out the red carpet for Ryan, Kirsten and their guests. Everyone was greeted by a glass of fizz each and some canapes before mingling in the gardens to the music of saxophonist, Mark Ellis, before being given a three-course meal. “All of the guests commented on how good the food was. You can give guests two options, but we just had one. We had the

Bloody Mary prawn cocktail to start, then a chicken main with roast vegetables, and lemon posset for dessert. Then later, we had a barbecue in the garden.” The couple’s first dance was accompanied by The Silvertones’ rendition of Ed Sheeran’s, Thinking Out Loud. The band got everyone on the dancefloor with some well-known covers, before the resident DJ kept everyone partying ‘til late. Those staying the night also took advantage of The Crown’s resident bar. “I only made it ‘til half two, but I think some of our guests were there ‘til 4am,” laughs Kirsten. “We stayed in a honeymoon suite and in the morning, had breakfast in the restaurant with our family.” “I would definitely recommend The Crown Hotel. It’s great value for money and the staff were great. I can’t thank them enough!” To find out more about The Crown Hotel’s wedding packages, visit www.crownhotelbawtry.com or call a member of the team on 01302 710341. Confetti

THE ULTIMATE

CHECKLIST With so many aspects to think about, planning a wedding can be one of our most stressful life events – but it doesn’t have to be. Rhiana Hughes talks you through the seven most important parts of your big day and how to tackle them.

Confetti

Venue While it used to be that churches were the only venues considered when it came to planning a wedding, this has completely changed today. You might want to stick to tradition and walk down the aisle at a beautiful chapel. But if that’s not for you there are a wealth of other venues and locations where you can tie the knot. If you are brave enough to trust the British weather, consider an outdoor wedding incorporating natural colours and decoration into your big day. For those who don’t want to leave the success of their wedding up to Mother Nature, look into more modern venues with an industrial feel. Use copper and warm neutral tones for a gritty, earthy feel, and lighten up the space with fairy lights and light floral arrangements.

Flowers A bigger decision than it may first seem, choosing the flowers for your big day is an important and sometimes tricky part of wedding planning. You might have a favourite flower but will it fit in with the theme and colour scheme of your wedding? Many brides are opting for a more freeform bouquet rather than the tightly wired bunch; choosing to hold flowers that look like they might have just been plucked from a nearby garden while still looking elegant and cleverly put together. When it comes to picking floral arrangements for the venue, think about hanging plants or table wreaths. These will still be eye-catching while allowing your guests to chat across the table without having to duck and dive behind an overbearing centrepiece.

Cake

Pampering

When choosing the cake for your big day you might feel overwhelmed by the number of flavours, sizes and designs on offer. If you’re having a small wedding, save yourself some money and opt for a one or two tier cake with more of a personalised style, and if your wedding is going to be on the larger side, consider a bigger cake with more of a simple design. Simple doesn’t mean boring, and there are countless bakeries that will offer beautiful cakes that can fit in with the theme of your wedding. You don’t have to stick to tradition and go for the common fruit cake either, if your favourite flavour is chocolate or funfetti – go for it. Dessert tables are proving more and more popular too, so if you don’t feel like splashing out on a big cake, pick some of your favourite sweet treats and let your guests pick at them throughout the night.

Brides, the natural look is in. Though your make up does need to last all day and photograph well, there are ways to have this done without looking completely unlike yourself, so be mindful when picking a makeup artist. How you wear your hair for your wedding is as important as the dress. The bridal up do is slowly becoming a thing of the past, so why not consider a vamped up version of your everyday look. Grooms, while you might be planning on just getting up and going on your big day, there are things you can do to get yourself feeling confident on what is your special day. Depending on how fast your hair grows, get yourself a haircut a week or two before the wedding so it’s not looking too overdone on the day. Take care of any facial hair that could look messy; you don’t want to look back at photos and wish you’d had a shave. Also, there’s one thing you really should consider that might not have crossed your mind – get yourself a manicure. Your day is going to consist of a lot of hand shaking, and you probably don’t want to be reaching out to guests with long nails or dry palms.

Catering The traditional three course sit down meal is still popular, but this can make it harder to please all of your guests, especially with all the varying dietary requirements you’ll find within a friendship group these days, and even more so if you’ve invited any fussy little ones. Instead of worrying about creating three or four separate menus, why not find a caterer who can create an assortment of small and sharing plates? Or if you’re having an outdoor wedding, look into having a food van or two. Lots of restaurants are starting their own catering companies, so if you’re keeping your wedding local you may well be able to get your favourite dinner spot to come down and feed yourself and guests.

Guest List You’d be amazed at how stressful putting together a guest list for your wedding can be. You and your partner may not agree on who the other wishes to invite, and even if you do, the number of guests you end up with could mean the costs of your wedding have skyrocketed. While you might be scared of hurting people’s feelings by not inviting them to your nuptials, remember that the day is about you. If you don’t want to invite that second cousin you met once at another cousins wedding, then don’t. Inviting only your nearest and dearest cuts costs and makes your day feel more special and focuses on your union, rather than spending your day playing catch up with 40 distant relatives.

What to wear Black tie is making a comeback, so grooms get your tux ready. If you’re not a fan of black or you’re planning a summer wedding and can’t face the heat in a three-piece, there are plenty of stores that can create the ideal suit to compliment the theme and your own personal style. The main attraction of the day has always been the dress, and while you might feel that there’s a lot of pressure to look perfect on your big day, the most important thing is that you feel good in the gown you’ve chosen. On trend at the moment are dresses that are relaxed and comfortable with a slightly bohemian feel, featuring elegant and intricate patterns. It’s not all about white anymore either, with brides opting for pastels or dresses featuring muted splashes of colour. Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk 75

PROMOTION

Keep moving IF YOU SUFFER FROM JOINT-RELATED PROBLEMS, THE EXPERTS AT CHAPMAN PHYSIOTHERAPY CAN HELP. hat’s your expectation of physiotherapy? Do you have personal experience of it or are you unsure of exactly what it entails? Physiotherapy aims to restore and maintain normal movement, for everyone, of all ages and abilities. Frequently after injury, repetitive action / learned behaviour or poor posture you will unconsciously adapt how you move, sometimes due to pain or weakness. However, just like the tracking on a car, abnormal movement can lead to further problems and wear. So, how can physio help? Physiotherapists are movement experts. They look at your posture, range of movement, palpate the painful region, assess your strength and try to identify a cause for the problem. They physios will then discuss their findings with you and decide an appropriate plan of action. This may be simply advice and home exercises (via a bespoke program with video clips and planner), or a more in depth treatment plan including hands-on therapy, gym rehabilitation, acupuncture, electrotherapy and Pilates to name but a few. The fact is, we have many tools in our kit and will work with you but at no point are you committed to a course of treatment. So what do we treat? Here’s a few examples of what we’ve seen recently: A post-operative total knee replacement

that had become very stiff and painful; a patient who thought she had tennis elbow but actually had referred pain from her neck; a child who struggled to stand on one leg due to poor balance, plantar fasciitis, headaches, ACL reconstructions and chronic pain. If it’s joint or movement related - we’ll take a look. Alicia, aged 14, came to us with foot pain. Very sporty, she was a keen participant in all school activities, plus swimming, taekwondo and dancing in her spare time. She recalled spraining her foot a few months ago in an innocuous injury and had struggled with standing on tip toes since. All other movements were pain free; there was no swelling and no pain on palpation. In fact, we were unable to reproduce any foot pain through activity. Vicky decided to assess her

lower back despite her denying any pain or symptoms in the region. It was quickly recognised that the lumbar spine was very tender on one side, reproducing the foot pain. On further questioning it became apparent that Alicia’s coach had identified that she was hyperextending her lower back during taekwondo. This was irritating one of the nerves as it left the spine. A home exercise program was commenced to strengthen the lower back and improve her movement patterns and the problem was rectified - it even improved her kick action!
