Inheritance Tax could still threaten your family’s prosperity Dale Murten Wealth Management is inviting readers to discover the simple yet highly effective steps you can take to protect your wealth and stay in control.

M

ore and more people are affected by IHT every year. It used to be a tax that was the preserve of the very wealthy, but escalating property values in the last ten years have put paid to that. For single people, Inheritance Tax applies at the top rate of 40% to assets worth over £325,000. This threshold is known as the nil rate band. For married couples and civil partnerships the threshold is £650,000. But the higher £650,000 limit only applies when assets are passed between spouses and civil partners and this figure reduces if any money is passed onto any of your benefactors during your lifetime. There are also other financial implications to consider, particularly if you are a widow, widower or divorcee.

And with the threshold remaining unchanged by the coalition government and subject to further legislation the

freeze will be extended up to and including the 2017/2018 tax year, more people could get sucked in as the minimum IHT threshold usually increases at a rate equivalent to at least inflation. Dale Murten of Dale Murten Wealth Management, a local Associate Partner Practice of St. James’s Place Wealth Management, is concerned that most people do not understand the implications of IHT. “It’s clear that people are confused by IHT policy and many mistakenly believe they are unlikely to be affected by it,” he said. And he is also concerned about a potentially more serious knock-on effect. “AWill* is vital in helping mitigate IHT,” said Dale. “Without a proper Will, people run the risk of their estate being severely reduced through IHT and also leaving

themselves exposed to the ravages of long term care costs later in life. It’s now more important than ever to seek professional advice and establish how you can protect your hard earned assets.” If you are uncertain about how you stand regarding IHT and would like to know more about how to prevent much of your money falling into the hands of Her Majesty’s Revenue & Customs, or your Local Authority through Long Term Care fees, please contact Dale Murten Wealth Management. Offering customers a greater choice

From a new showroom to new products, there’s plenty to celebrate at Distinctive Flooring & Blinds. Words: Fiona Barber

006 - 007 ESide Sep15_Layout 1 21/08/2015 13:45 Page 2

I

t has been an incredible year for Distinctive Flooring & Blinds. The family-run business has had much to celebrate, including expanding the business with an additional showroom in Wombwell, Barnsley, following the evergrowing success of their Balby showroom. They have also expanded their range of products, and continue to offer a fantastic service to their loyal customers. The latest achievement for the Balby based showroom is the arrival of new luxury design flooring Amtico. Distinctive has been specially selected as an Amtico retailer, which offers customers the opportunity to create a totally unique floor. The brand is unrivalled in its design capability and, with more than 4,000 design options, it offers the ultimate experience in bespoke design. Amtico offers traditional, classical, contemporary and minimalist floors in a wide variety of options including wood planks, parquet flooring, tiles and abstract designs. Owner Andy Summers is delighted that Distinctive has been chosen as an Amtico retailer of choice stockist, which allows him to extend the showroom’s flooring range and offer customers greater choice and versatility. As well as their beautiful designs, Amtico products also come with a 25-year guarantee and are installed by a specialist team who carry out a preparation process prior to laying the floor. In general, it takes two days to install, ensuring all due care and attention to detail is taken. With all these impressive benefits, you would expect Amtico to be expensive. But in

www.regionalmagazine.co.uk

fact, when compared to most woods and stones, it is of a comparable price. And, whereas most competitor design floors are sourced from the Far East or Europe, Amtico is proud to say that all its products are made in England and support the local economy. Becoming an Amtico stockist is just the latest in a string of successes for Distinctive. Last year the business moved from premises in Warmsworth to its current location in Balby. The new shop is five times larger, which allows Andy and his team to offer a greater range of quality products. Their fantastic range of flooring covers inexpensive options to the very top quality, meaning there is something to fit everyone’s budget. No matter what you plan to spend, you’re guaranteed a warm welcome and will receive a great service at a fair price. Distinctive stocks well-known brands such as Brintons, Ulster, Axminster and Kingsmead at very competitive prices. They don’t just stock carpets though. A large selection of high quality and value for money hardwood flooring, laminate and vinyl also lines the showroom walls. In total, Distinctive has more than 100 brands on offer. This theme of convenience extends far beyond the selection process, as once you’ve chosen your new floor covering, the friendly experienced fitting team are more than happy to move furniture or uplift old flooring. Nothing is too much hassle. Andy is full of praise for his team of fitters, who he says are ‘second to none’. Between them they have more than 50 years’ experience and they really do care about doing a good job. Along with a wealth of knowledge and experience, they deliver an

honest, friendly and professional service with the customer always taking top priority. In recent years, the business also branched out and added quality, made-tomeasure blinds to its portfolio. The move to bigger premises has allowed them to expand their range, which includes stylish, contemporary and traditional blinds to suit any interior. Verticals, wooden slatted, roller, and roman blinds are available and, with carpets, floor coverings and blinds all under one roof, you can guarantee a perfect colour match for your home. Phone or drop into the showroom today to see for yourself the fantastic range and service Distinctive Flooring & Blinds can offer. If you are interested in creating an Amtico design floor, Andy and his team will be happy to discuss requirements and ideas with you. At the showroom you can view many of the Amtico products and take samples as required. They can then arrange a free no obligation home visit to make the necessary checks for your new flooring. And if you need any assistance or advice, Balby store manager, Duncan Meadows and Wombwell store manager, Michael Chatsworth and their teams will be more than happy to help. ES St Leger Festival

Beginners’ luck It’s the biggest date in Doncaster’s racing calendar so here’s a novice’s guide to picking a winner…perhaps*

Colour We all have our preferences and for different reasons. Royal blue for the loyalists, pink for the ladies and red and white for the Doncaster Rovers fans will all be covered in this year’s line-ups. Picking on colour has been a staple of amateur bettors since racing began.

F

or the uninitiated, going to a race meeting is a day out like no other. The thrills, spills, frocks and jocks all make for a great day out. However, when it comes to placing a bet for the first time it can be somewhat tricky to pick which horse to place your hard-earned on. If you’re not a racing afficionado, it’s hard to know where to start. A racecard can look like a Chinese manuscript for those not in the know. So forget the form, the trainer, distances and ground. Here’s some more usual ways to pick your St Leger winner.* * Finding the winner not guaranteed.

Trainer/Jockey

Name

You could do worse than placing your faith and £2 each way on the shoulders of a jockey or trainer. In training terms it’s hard to look past the all-conquering Aiden O’Brien, who always comes across the Irish Sea with a powerful string in tow. He’ll have four or five horses in the race; your best bet is looking to see which horse his son Joseph is riding which will give a good indication of who the stable fancy the most. Any hopes of the big prize remaining locally lie with David Brown, training out of Newark, who enters Medrano who looks a value each way bet with likely starting odds of 20/1. For an international flavour, why not back the likeable Brazilian Silvestre De Sousa as he continues in stunning form on a march to winning this year’s Jockey Championship?

What’s in a name? Well, a couple of quid in your back pocket if you can find the right one. Racehorses have some of the most creative, ridiculous and sometime bemusing names imaginable, usually made up from the Dam and Sire’s (mum and dad’s names). This year is no exception and there’s plenty of scope for finding yours. There’s Jack Naylor for all the Jacks in the crowd. Aidan O’Brien’s Wedding Vow will be popular with newlyweds, or Richard Hannon’s Proposed if you’re thinking of popping the question (or trying for a subtle hint). There’s the festively named Father Christmas if you just can’t wait ‘til December, and Highland Reel for those joining from across the border.

ES Eating Out

A Grand occasion What could be better than catching up on family news over a delicious meal? Words and photography: Stephanie Burns

T

here are few things I love more than dinner with my dad. Living in different cities – Sheffield and York, to be precise – we don’t get to see each other nearly as often as we should and any opportunity to grab a bite is taken with great enthusiasm. So when dinner at a half-way point – Doncaster’s Grand St Leger Hotel – was on the cards, I could think of no-one better to share the experience with. We met in The Paddock Bar, sinking into the leather chairs with a glass of wine in hand to catch up on the latest family news. I’d perused the menu on the hotel’s website before my visit – and had been craving the smoker burger ever since – so when the waiter handed us a hard copy, I had no difficulty deciding. Ordering in the bar and waiting for the starters to be ready before being seated at the table always adds a sense of occasion to proceedings and it wasn’t long before we were being led through to the Carrington’s restaurant. Its plush patterned carpet, cream panelled walls and starched white tablecloths present a formal but welcoming atmosphere. We’d chosen two classic dishes for starters. My prawn cocktail was a beautifully presented, deconstructed version, with plump prawns resting on a bed of peppery rocket, a light sprinkling of paprika and delicate blobs of marie-rose sauce. My dad had jumped at the chance to have one of his favourite soups,

14

French onion, and was equally impressed with his dish. Warm, crusty bread rolls, which we spread thickly with butter, were an added delight. Before long, the friendly waiter was setting down our main courses – and what a treat they were. My dad’s perfectly cooked cod (chosen fresh from Doncaster market) was wrapped in crisp parma ham and joined by a tasty sundried tomato risotto and spicy tomato sauce. He thoroughly enjoyed every mouthful. My burger happily lived up to expect– ations. The 6oz patty, complete with melted Applewood smoked cheddar, bacon, rocket, red onion and sticky barbecue glaze, was sandwiched between a floury bun and accompanied by fantastic handcut chips in a wire basket, a side salad drizzled with balsamic dressing, and a little pot of coleslaw. All components were delicious. Well-presented desserts of indulgent chocolate fudge brownie with vanilla ice

cream and lemon tart, each of which came with tangy coulis and fresh fruit, ensured the meal ended just as well as it had begun. As I dropped my dad off at the train station and promised to see him again soon, I reminded him about Grand St Leger’s Sunday lunch, which offers three courses for just £14.95. With this in mind, there’s no doubt the hotel will become our regular half-way meeting point from now on.

ES St Leger Festival

AP RIDES AGAIN Sporting history will be made at this year’s St Leger Festival when a true legend gets back in the saddle for one last race, writes Robert Plumbridge.

R

acing history will be made once more on Town Moor on the opening day of the St Leger Festival. For one time, and one time only, racing fans will be able to witness the most recognisable face in the sport back in the saddle – the legendary AP McCoy. After 20 consecutive National Hunt Jockey Championships and 4,348 winners in Great Britain and Ireland, he finally decided to call time on a truly remarkable career. No jockey since Lester Piggott has become so well known and loved, not only in racing circles, but by the general public. This culminated in him being crowned BBC Sports Personality Of The Year 2012 having won the Grand National aboard Don’t Push It earlier that year. This was the cherry on top for a man who’d already established himself as the best in the game. It was only fitting that the world’s greatest race should be finally be conquered by the king on the sport of kings. AP finally called it quits at Sandown on 25

April this year, having felt it was the right time to let go of the reins. Few jobs are as brutal as that of the jumps jockey, so choosing when you retire is for many, not an option. McCoy was no stranger to the perils of a sport where injury is an everyday occurrence. His injury list includes a broken leg, arm, ankle, both wrists, shoulder blades, collar bones, cheekbones and all of his ribs. He has also broken several vertebrae in his back, suffered punctured lungs and all of his teeth have had to be replaced at some point. In his earlier career, McCoy had not only ridden, but won a race having broken his collar bone the night before, somehow managing on pain killers and gritted teeth. However, broken collar bones, cracked ribs, concussions are all just ‘part of the job’ as Tony would say. Occupational hazards have never held him back for long though, and the records speak for themselves. He counts 31 Cheltenham Festival wins amongst a record 4,348 career wins – which doesn’t look like being broken

AP McCoy at Sandown after his last race earlier this year

16

anytime soon. Not only blessed with a natural talent for riding, McCoy is a true testament of how far grit, determination and a passion for what you do can take you – few sportsmen on the planet can boast supplies of those qualities compared with McCoy. Those racing fans hoping for a more permanent return will be sorely disappointed however, as McCoy admits he had no desire to return at all, but was persuaded by his friend and a former trainer Jack Berry. Speaking to the Racing Post, Tony said: "I got bullied into it by Jack Berry! I have no idea who I will be riding against and I had no desire to do it at all but it is in a good cause.” So on Wednesday 9 September, Doncaster racegoers will be privileged to watch one of the great sporting comebacks – if only for just a minute down the Town Moor track as he dons the silks in the aptly named Leger Legends Charity race. Like Steve Redgrave returning for the 2000 Sydney Olympics or Muhammad Ali in the Rumble in The Jungle, the Doncaster crowd will witness a true piece of sporting history before the main event gets underway. The Legends race will be run in aid of the Injured Jockeys Fund.

ES Eating Out

Mumbai magic

Words: Chris Wilson

Travelling from far and wide to this Stainforth Indian is a common occurrence, but is it worth going the extra mile for?

A

veteran restaurant owner once explained to me the importance of having a good front-of-house policy. His view, honed by decades of success in a business with a high failure rate, was that a stand-offish greeting would always turn customers off before a forkful of food has passed their lips. Even if the chef was performing miracles, if they weren’t made to feel welcome, they wouldn’t hurry back. No fear of that at Mumbai in Stainforth, where warm welcomes and cheerful hellos are second nature to as friendly a bunch of restaurant staff as I have ever come across. By the time the papadums and pickles arrive you can’t help but be in the best of moods. We began with a mixed seafood Tandoori starter to share. This moreish selection of fish masala, fish tikka, king prawn tikka and Lahorie prawns was brought to the table on a sizzling platter with fried onions, peppers and coriander. The clean flavours from the fresh herbs and spices were a perfect introduction to the good things to come, as was the lack of garish red food dye that regrettably accompanies so many dishes with the word ‘tandoori’ in the title. It’s the taste that makes it authentic, not the colour. It’s a strange fact that while Indian menus offer more choices than virtually any cuisine, so many of us will opt for our personal favourites every single time. Fair enough, if you know what you like, but for anyone who craves something a little different, Mumbai will provide. For my main course I chose Nihari chicken, a typical Lahorie dish new to me. Mumbai specialises in the cuisine of Northern India, and we soon cottoned on to the fact

www.regionalmagazine.co.uk

that this means clean, bold flavours and sauces that are rich in taste but not too heavy. If you like garlic and ginger, as I do, this dish is a real winner. My companion also broke new ground with one of the most recent additions to the Mumbai menu, lamb hara bara. Mint is the dominant herb here – something neither of us had come across in an Indian restaurant before. Unconventional maybe, but it really worked and the quality of the lean, tender lamb was perfect. Side dishes are vital, of course, when it comes to Indian food, and again the quality was outstanding. Pilau rice was rich with delicately fried onions, the lentils in the dahl still had some texture rather than being reduced to a sludgy gravy, and the Peshwari nan, which contained coconut, sultanas and pistachio nuts and was covered in crunchy sesame seeds, was perhaps the best we have tasted. Puddings are rarely on my radar in Indian restaurants, but on this occasion the home made gulab jaman, a light and super-sweet sponge with strawberry sauce and ice cream, was most welcome. With seating for up to 100, Mumbai is great for celebrations – there were two rousing choruses of ‘Happy Birthday’, complete with sparklers, while we were there – and with a wide age group from young children to senior citizens the atmosphere was bright, buzzing and infectiously friendly. We fell into conversation with our neighbours who make the ten-mile journey every couple of weeks for their regular fix of Mumbai magic. For other loyal customers the round trip is considerably longer. For food this good in the friendliest of settings, it’s most definitely worth going the extra mile.

ES Eating Out

Doncaster hot-spot

Words: Phoebe Seymour

Relish Bar & Grill is a venue for all occasions – if you can get a table.

W

hen I had a glance at the Relish menu packed full of steaks, chicken wings and burgers hot off the grill, I expected the American diner look that most bar and grills usually opt for. However, I was surprised to find a large, classy, arm-chaired bar area and a contemporary restaurant with cosy lamps dotted along a row of green leather booths. I was also amazed at how busy and bustling the restaurant was for a Wednesday night; from the long tables of young, glammed-up girls ready for a night on the town, to the mature couples out for a midweek meal. Once I’d sat down and looked through the menu thoroughly, I realised calling Relish a bar and grill doesn’t do them justice – with pizzas, pastas and salads, there’s so much more than meat. Regular live music every Thursday, the Mark Ellis Quartet on the first Tuesday of every month and DJs every Saturday and every other Tuesday, combined with an impressively well-stocked bar, mean Relish is a great place to start your night out too. With over 20 different rums, 20 gins, many whiskeys and a world beers menu, there’s a cocktail or pint for every palate. My palate was saying “rum” so I started with a summery strawberry daiquiri with

www.regionalmagazine.co.uk

Santa Teresa rum, whilst my dining partner took his taste-buds to America with a pint of Brooklyn. I started with some zingy, lime-infused chicken skewers accompanied by salsa and sour cream and my companion was pleased to find that his crispy chicken wings with BBQ sauce were not greasy, yet still maintained their succulent flavour. For mains, my companion went with the popular sirloin steak recommended by our enthusiastic waiter Jack. Cooked to a perfect medium-rare, it was juicy and pink on the inside and covered with a subtly peppery sauce and served with golden chips. I went with the moreish tomato, prawn and basil risotto on the specials menu which was topped with sea bass. Although, I usually avoid the skin on fish, this one’s was face-up and irresistibly crispy. On to dessert, my chocolate brownie had a thin biscuit top layer, which hid a soft and crumbly sponge beneath.Vanilla ice cream is always a nice relief from indulgent chocolate desserts, but my companion felt that it went particularly well with the baked vanilla cheesecake, which was topped with red berries and had a soft home-made base, rather than the biscuit base you find on typical, store-bought, cheesecakes. Relish is certainly worthy of the title, as I enjoyed every sip of their spirit-laced

cocktails, and savoured every mouthful of their beautifully prepared food. With a bar and restaurant this good, the only problem is trying to book a table on a week day, never mind on a Saturday night!

What we ate: Starters Chicken skewers, £5.90 Chicken wings, £5.90 Mains 12oz Sirloin steak, £18 Creamy peppercorn sauce, £1.75 Sea bass and prawn risotto, £14 Desserts Relish chocolate brownie, £5.50 Baked vanilla cheesecake, £5.50 Drinks Frozen strawberry daiquiri, £6.50 Single Kraken rum and coke, £3.20 Pint of Brooklyn lager, £4.20 Relish Bar & Grill 19 East Laith Gate, Doncaster, DN1 1JG Tel: 01302 342936 www.relish-doncaster.co.uk

ES St Leger

Written in the stars? The William Haggas-trained Storm The Stars is one of the stand-out horses in this year’s St Leger line-up. Could it be his year? Words: Robert Plumbridge

A

storm is brewing on Town Moor as the oldest classic, the St Leger, draws ever closer. As the summer flat racing campaign draws to a close there is only one of its greatest prizes left to be handed out. Stamina is the name of the game in the finale of a breath-taking season, and for trainer William Haggas, one he will hope will end with a third Classic win of his career as a trainer. The bookmakers clearly fancy Haggas’ chances of doing so. In a wide-open contest he can be found at the head of the market and available at around a 6/1 shot for the big one. The bookies are not the only one’s fancying him either. Trainer Haggas has taken no chances with the colt, and has allowed him time to rest in between races, showing a clear intention to win on 12 September. Speaking after his latest race in France, Haggas said: “It was another good effort but our jockey just felt he wasn’t in quite the same form. I think he is entitled to have a bit of a break now.” Like most racehorses, a lot of Storm The Stars’ talent lies in the bloodlines. The threeyear-old is beautifully bred, sired by the magnificent Sea The Stars who was regarded by many as one of the greatest racehorses of all time. He is best known for winning the 2000 Guineas, the Epsom Derby and the

24

Eclipse in a perfect season in 2009. That year he also won France’s biggest race, the renowned Group 1 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp. Winning is in Storm The Stars’ blood. The colt is not the only one with pedigree either. Trainer William Haggas brings classic winning credentials too. Although not yet landing a St Leger, Haggas has picked up a couple of Classics himself along the way. Firstly in 1996, he won the Epsom Derby with Shaamit and then at the same track in 2011 he took the Oaks with super-talented filly Dancing Rain. So can Haggas and Storm The Stars win the oldest prize of them all? There’s tough competition with supreme Irish invader Aiden O’Brien entering a cavalry assault into the race there’ll be dangers across the track. Watch out also for local hope David Brown with Medrano and multiple winner John Gosden who this year has one entry in Mr Singh.

Got the Leger licked? William Haggas (above) will be hoping Storm The Stars (right) can deliver his first Leger

s the Bawtry Retail Association (BRA) make the most of summer’s final few days, our attention is drawn to the many exciting events and activities taking place this autumn. First up is the hotly anticipated Ladbrokes St Leger Festival, which takes place from 9 to 12 September. Businesses in Bawtry will once again be offering their full support of this fantastic event by flying the St Leger flags and welcoming racegoers before and after their visit to the racecourse. We will also be presenting prizes to Visit Bawtry’s Best Dressed Lady (Thursday) and, new for this year, Best Dressed Gent (Friday), so be sure to put your best foot forward at this year’s festival. Later in September, on Saturday 26 from 10am to 12noon, the Doncaster and Bawtry branch of the British Heart Foundation is hosting a coffee morning at Bawtry New Hall. While you’re there, be sure to drop off your donations for the charity’s ‘Bag It. Beat It.’ campaign. Simply fill a bag with good quality clothes, shoes, books, handbags, DVDs, CDs, bric-a-brac or children’s toys and bring it along to the coffee morning. Bawtry is renowned for its charitable endeavours, but the reality of why we fundraise has recently been brought into sharper focus. We were saddened to hear that Geoff from

www.visitbawtry.com Unit 4 Dry Cleaning has been diagnosed with terminal cancer and, as a result, has made the difficult decision to close the shop on 28 August to enable him to spend more time with his family. I’m sure you’ll join us in offering our heartfelt sympathies to Geoff and his family. News such as this makes the annual Robinsons of Bawtry Fashion Show in aid of Yorkshire Cancer Research, which will take place at China Rose on Sunday 4 October, even more important. It will be the 23rd year this event has been held, and they’re hoping to add a good chunk to their current fundraising total of £285,000. The annual BRA bunting fundraising event hosted by &SheKnows… will also make a return on 22 October. Start gathering your unwanted bras now and either deposit them in the pink bins around Bawtry or drop them off at &SheKnows… And while it may still seem like Christmas is ages away, the excitement of the festive season will soon be upon us. We hope you’ll join us to celebrate the fabulous annual Christmas event on Sunday 22 November 1-8pm, and of course continue to support our wonderful local businesses in the lead up to the big day. s far back as the fifth century, Bawtry has been something of a traveller’s rest. Based close to the Roman-built Great North Road, which lies close to the present borders of Yorkshire, Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire (and in the 600s lay on the southern reaches of Northumbria), Bawtry has long been considered the gateway to the north. Even Swan Street was named after one of the oldest and largest of the Bawtry coaching inns. The remains of the Dovecot building can still be seen at The Courtyard today and are just one reminder of Bawtry’s rich history. By 1200, a new town was developed adjacent to the older village and a market was first recorded there in 1247. The town soon 6 | www.visitbawtry.com

grew as a river port and a stopping point between Doncaster and Retford, but also as a local commercial centre. By the mid-14th century, the port was exporting wool and other items overseas. Now home to a variety of shops and businesses, as well as around 3,200 residents, long gone are the times when Bawtry was simply viewed as a stop-off for weary visitors on long journeys. The bustling town now boasts a number of reputable shopping outlets, many of which can be found on The High Street or just off it, in The Courtyard. The Courtyard has experienced many highs and lows, but in recent years has become a vibrant, hidden retail gem. Modernised, but staying sympathetic to its original structure, the

| EVENT

www.visitbawtry.com

Bawtry townsfolk and local celebrities have been quick to lend their support to the annual bra bunting event

Think pink... The return of a quirky event, led by & She Knows..., will be raising money for very worthwhile causes.

Y

ou may have noticed a number of pink bins popping up around Bawtry lately. Some of you may wonder what strange recycling scheme the council has rolled out now, whilst other generous locals who’ve lived in the area for the past few years may remember why… Bawtry’s luxury lingerie boutique & She Knows… is pleased to announce that their Bra Bunting event will be returning for its fourth year on 22 October in support of Breast Cancer Awareness month. The pink bins have been provided courtesy of & She Knows… and the Bawtry Retail Association and as in previous years, ladies throughout the region are encouraged to rummage through their drawers and donate old or unwanted bras along with a £2 donation in aid of two worthy causes. All funds raised will be split between Firefly and Breast Cancer Care. Firefly is a Doncaster-based charity that supports local people who have been diagnosed with cancer. The Firefly Express provides free transport to Sheffield treatment hospitals to cancer

patients and their families. Breast Cancer Care provides information, emotional and practical support, brings people affected by breast cancer together, campaigns for improvements in standards of support and care, and promotes the importance of early detection. From 1 October, the pink bins will be situated in & She Knows…, The Courtyard in Bawtry, Elite Hair & Nails, The Crown Hotel, One Call Insurance, Yorkshire Caravans of Bawtry, Doncaster Road and Cherry Blossom Cakes. On Thursday 22 October the ‘bra bunting’ will once again be hoisted in The Courtyard in Bawtry to mark the event helped by some high profile local names and will remain there for the rest of the week. After the event the bras will be recycled and all donations split between the two charities. Additionally, members of Bawtry Retail Association will be invited to join in on ‘Pink Thursday’ by decorating their shops and businesses as brightly as they can. & She Knows… owner Emily Harbon and

her colleague Samantha Sudworth have been specially trained by brands Amoena and Anita, specialists in care wear (post surgery products) and breast forms (prosthetics), both of which & She Knows… stock. So they are well-placed to offer advice and specialist fitting for ladies suffering or recovering from breast cancer. The Bra Bunting and Pink Thursday events have already raised a lot of money and awareness in the area over the years, and Emily hopes this year will be an even bigger success. So come on girls, don’t be shy, hang your bras with pride – its all for two brilliant causes. & She Knows… 11 The Courtyard, Bawtry, DN10 6JG Tel: 01302 719292 www.andsheknows.co.uk www.visitbawtry.com | 13

Admirable reputation Next year marks a significant milestone in Yorkshire Caravans’ history – and it’s something they’re keen to celebrate.

C

ongratulations to Yorkshire Caravans of Bawtry (YC) who have been crowned our Visit Bawtry Retailer of the Month. On hearing the announcement, managing director Jon Goulden said: “Thanks, that’s fantastic news. We have a really loyal fan-base and are proud to be celebrating our 85th anniversary next year.” Established in 1931, their admirable reputation has been built over many years upon their values of quality, choice and personal service. Many of their customer relationships are long term, with customers choosing YC to supply their new and preowned caravans time and time again. Not only is YC one of the oldest and largest independent retailers of caravans, awnings and leisure accessories in the UK, they also have an enthusiastic team brimming with expertise. When it comes to searching for the right caravan or motor home, they are always happy to share their knowledge. Jon, who has worked at the family business for the past 17 years, was made the general manager in 2004 and was promoted to director in 2008. The business started when Sheffield petrol filling station owner Percy Smith was asked to store a customer’s caravan.

The caravan created so much interest that Percy contacted the manufacturer to supply him with new caravans to sell. The rest is history. YC have always worked hard to be ahead of the everevolving changes within the industry and continue to focuson their customers’ needs. To complement their large retail site they also have a newly-launched online shop that offers free delivery on many products. With so many people preferring to shop from the comfort of their own homes, the website acts as their shop window. They offer one of the largest ranges of award-winning caravan brands including Bailey, Swift, Sterling and Sprite. Working in partnership with Swift, YC exclusively manufacture a limited edition range of caravans each year. The 2015 Sprite Exclusive comes with an extras pack with over £1,800 worth of accessories included in the price. YC boasts one of the largest indoor awning showrooms in the UK, supply 3,500 different accessories including chairs, tables, towing mirrors and gas equipment, as well as 24-hour secure storage, a dedicated customer service team and a parts department

Celebrating Yorkshire Day

capable of sourcing and replacing almost any spare part. Not only do YC provide quality caravans and excellent customer service, they also organise a number of events at their 34 acre site, such as their recent Yorkshire Day on 1 August, which celebrated all things Yorkshire. Activities on the day included a brass band, a barbecue, a Yorkshire-themed treasure hunt, and a raffle to raise money for local cancer charity Aurora. Jo has hosted other events including a Christmas market and is currently planning an end of season party to thank their local customers. “We’re very much a family business, firmly established in the community,” said Jo. “Jon and I want to focus on making the site even more family-friendly for our customers by building a playground too.” As a long-standing business with nearly 85 years of expertise in the caravan industry, along with their impressive customer care and community events, it’s no wonder we’ve chosen Yorkshire Caravans as our Retailer of the Month. | EATING OUT

www.visitbawtry.com

No flash in the pan Ziniz is seriously stylish – but how does the food measure up, asks Chris Wilson.

W

hether it’s a homely little trattoria with checked tablecloths and candles stuffed into Chianti bottles, or a classier affair with smart leather seats and plush lighting, the best Italian restaurants are a showcase for cooking that comes from the heart. Some may say Ziniz, which most definitely falls into the latter camp, is just a little bit flash. Situated where it is, in the heart of Bawtry (a town not known for understatement), what else would you expect? However, there is nothing showy about the food, which goes allout to present the very best of Tuscan food and wine with no compromises. The presentation and setting are unashamedly high-end, service is immaculate and the venue – complete with a ‘wish you were here’ photograph of Florence by night running the length of one wall in the dining area – will certainly feel like home to the smart set. Meanwhile the food brings glorious substance to more than match the setting. Even the mixed olives that we nibbled on while waiting for our starters were something special; fleshy and full of flavour. Rabbit is one of my favourite foods and the Italians definitely know how to cook it, so a starter portion of wild rabbit ragu served with egg pasta ribbons was a splendid introduction to Ziniz’ culinary style. The rabbit was rich and tender, easily a match for the intense tomato sauce, while the pasta was made on the premises with eggs specially imported from the

old country. Is it worth the extra time and effort? You’d better believe it. Our other starter, one of the daily specials, was a dynamic combination of expertly grilled king prawns and scallop, served with leeks and onions. The seafood was sweet, salty and tender, and the accompanying white wine and mascarpone sauce was sublime. Scallops also took centre stage in a memorable main course, coming baked Florentine-style on a bed of spinach and draped in a cheese sauce that (imagine you are Jeremy Clarkson when saying the next bit) was so rich and smooth, if it had taken human form it would have been wearing an Armani tux and driving a Ferrari. Someone in that kitchen really, really knows their sauces. A side order of gorgeous puréed potatoes, which I suspect included outrageous quantities of high quality olive oil, and some simple green beans, completed the picture. Just as special, in its wonderfully rustic way, was the calzone, known in certain quarters as Italy’s answer to the Cornish pasty, which was bursting with bold flavours and generously stuffed with good things including Italian sausage, cannelini beans, chilli, and grilled peppers. For desserts, a seriously boozy tiramisu and a couple of scoops of high quality ice cream rounded things off in considerable style. There is a great wine list too, solidly Italian, which deserves to be investigated in some depth. Or to put it another way, next time someone else can drive.

What we ate: Starters Mixed olives, £3.75 Pappardelle Toscane, £6.75 Gamberoni e capasante, £10.95 Mains Andrea calzone, £12.95 Capasante Firenze, £17.95 Sides Pureed potatoes, £2.75 Buttered green beans, £3.25 Desserts Tiramisu, £5.50 Strawberry and pistachio ice cream, £1.75 Drinks Primitivo Salento (large glass), £7.35 Pinot Grigio Friuli Aquileia (large glass), £7.35 Double espresso, £2.50 Hot chocolate, £2.80 Ziniz 1 Market Place, Bawtry, DN10 6JL Tel: 01302 711115 www.ziniz.co.uk www.visitbawtry.com | 21

Members of the fitness centre MFT (Military Fit Together) Doncaster were pleased to complete the challenging obstacle course Tough Mudder last month. Fitness instructor Ian has been putting 35 members through their paces by leading them over the MFT outdoor course in preparation of the challenge every Saturday since February. The two-hour Saturday class was designed to help prepare them for the 12-mile running distance and to be strong enough to tackle the 20 demanding obstacles at the event. Now that the MFT team has completed Tough Mudder, they’ll be moving up to the even more gruelling Rat Race, a 20-mile, 200 obstacle challenge in May 2016. The MFT Doncaster site offers a mix of both indoor and outdoor classes to help individuals keep fit and reach their personal, full potential. They welcome new recruits to join them for either regular outdoor classes, or to join the team for their Rat Race training every Saturday at 10.30am. For more information and ways to contact the team, visit www.mft.global. You can also find them on Facebook.

NEW ARRIVAL AT & SHE KNOWS... & She Knows… are excited to announce that this season they will be stocking one of the world’s largest luxury lingerie brands, La Perla. The boutique has been offered the fantastic opportunity as the only independent lingerie boutique currently in the north of England to house the Italian brand who approached owner Emily Harbon at the end of 2014 to hold their collections. CHARITY MASQUERADE BALL IN AID OF DEMENTIA UK Local businesswoman, Liz Birdsall, and her mum Margaret from North Wheatley will be holding a Masked Venetian Ball at the Crown Hotel in Bawtry on Friday 23 October in aid of the charity Dementia UK. Liz decided to support Dementia UK after her grandfather developed vascular dementia. Despite this, he was able to continue his main hobbies, bridge and swimming, and was very fortunate to have a brilliant support network of family, friends and carers. Margaret worked as a dementia support worker and therefore knew how to get the support her dad needed as his dementia progressed. However, not everyone is so fortunate and Margaret hopes that by supporting Dementia UK, as well as Admiral Nurses (specialist dementia nurses) and the Admiral Nurse Direct helpline, they will be able to help more people throughout the UK. “Not only will you be supporting a worthy charity which is close to my heart, but you will also be giving yourself a great treat and a fabulous night out,” said Liz. All money raised on the night will go to Dementia UK to help them continue to improve the quality of life for those affected. If you would like to know more about the Masquerade Ball contact Liz on 07795 077088. For more information on Dementia UK, visit www.dementiauk.org www.visitbawtry.com | 23

Five years in the making Stephanie Burns finally ticks Caviars off her bucket list – but was it worth the wait?

I

n my five years at Eastside, I’ve heard great things about Caviars. From the fantastic food to the excellent service, my colleagues have raved about this Bawtry gem, hidden away on Swan Street. Finally, last month, my time had come. As my partner and I pulled up to the old white building, our sense of anticipation heightened and from the moment we stepped through the door and were welcomed by general manager Malcolm Beanlands, we knew it would live up to expectations. Malcolm has more than 25 years’ hospitality experience, having travelled the world working in esteemed establishments in London, America, the Caribbean, the Cayman Islands and Spain before settling back in Yorkshire. He took over at Caviars three years ago and brings with him an enthusiastic approach to front-of-house – friendly but not intrusive, polite without being formal. Working alongside him in the open, theatre-style kitchen is Ross Leggitt, a young and talented head chef, who, we were delighted to discover, knows

24 | www.visitbawtry.com

exactly how to deliver a first-class meal. After enjoying some pre-dinner drinks in the bar (me, a chilled flute of Prosecco; my partner, an unusual dark Mexican lager called Negra Modelo) we made our way into the restaurant and awaited our starters. In no time, Malcolm presented us with two mouth-watering dishes. My partner’s goat’s cheese bon-bons – oozing creamy, gooey cheese that complemented the crisp outer layer – were accompanied by a zingy selection of peach, lambs leaf and balsamic glaze. It went down a treat. My pan-seared scallops were equally delicious. Served with a smooth pea and bacon puree, tasty cauliflower florets and a salty pancetta crisp, this was a well-balanced dish bursting with flavour. Mains continued to impress. My rump of spring lamb was beautifully cooked – just pink – and joined by fragrant baked fennel, fondant potato, spinach purée and the most divine red wine jus. This was classic cooking at its very best. Across the table, my partner was taking great pleasure in watching the contents of his lemon herb butter bomb cascade over a turbot fillet, sautéed potatoes and purple sprouting broccoli. The star of his dish, however, was undoubtedly the coral sauce – made using the often-overlooked orange part of the scallop. Malcolm had recommended a glass of Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc to match the tender fish and it worked wonderfully. At this point, the late evening sun was just beginning to set and the room took on a new

ambience, the twinkling fairy lights on the ceiling casting a cosy glow. It may only have been a Tuesday night but several tables were occupied; I imagine that Friday and Saturday evenings are positively buzzing. Desserts of lemon tart with a deliciously sharp raspberry sorbet, and a cheeseboard complete with local cheeses and fantastic homemade chutney, rounded off the evening in style. We certainly won’t be waiting another five years to return.

What we ate: Starters Cheese bon-bons, £6.95 Scallops, £9.95 Mains Turbot, £20.95 Lamb, £21.95 Seasonable vegetables, £2.95 Dessert Lemon tart, £6.25 Local cheeses, £7.95 Drinks Negra Modelo, £3.50 Prosecco, £4.50 Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, £5 Caviars 9 Swan Street, Bawtry DN10 6JQ Tel: 01302 710006 www.caviarsofbawtry.com

ES St Leger Festival

Sharp dressed MEN… It’s time to get suited and booted, lads. Doncaster Racecourse is looking for the most stylish guys around.

D

oncaster Racecourse has upped the stakes ahead of one of its most hotly anticipated meetings, with the announcement of its first ever best dressed male competition. The Town Moor racecourse will launch a search for the best dressed male racegoer at its Socialites E-Cigarettes Doncaster Cup Gentlemen’s Day on Friday 11 September, part of the Ladbrokes St Leger Festival. The annual four day St Leger Festival, features the oldest classic meeting in the racing calendar, the St Leger Stakes. The festival attracts tens of thousands of people from all over the UK each year. The competition, the first of its kind for males, will see racegoers battle it out in a quest to be the most stylish man – a contest that will match the search for the best dressed lady at the racecourse’s DFS Ladies Day, which this year takes place on Thursday 10 September. Kieran Gallagher, executive director at Doncaster Racecourse said that the competition was a novel way of making sure that the focus was not only on female racegoers to look their best for a day at the races. He said: “Every year the Ladbrokes St Leger festival pulls in a large crowd, with four

days of exciting action taking place. Typically, lots of men come along to Doncaster Cup day to enjoy some the high calibre racing action we have on display, so we thought the launch of a best dressed competition for men would be a great way of ensuring that our male racegoers are well turned out for the occasion. This year’s Doncaster Cup Day will have a Gentlemen’s theme and there will be a host of other attractions that will appeal to male racegoers taking place on the day. “The focus is always on ladies when it comes to style, so we thought we would do something a little bit different and challenge

men to look as good as possible. We’re looking forward to seeing what they do to up the style stakes for the occasion.” The winning man will walk away with a package of prizes provided by sponsors, Frenchgate Shopping Centre. Doncaster Cup Gentlemen’s Day will also include attractions such as a sports car display and laser clay pigeon shooting. The raceday will also raise money for Prostate Cancer UK’s Men United campaign. The Ladbrokes St. Leger Festival takes place this year at Doncaster Racecourse from September 9-12. The J2O Spritz Leger Legends Day and its centrepiece the Leger Legends race marks day one, followed by the glitz and glamour of DFS Ladies’ Day on September 10. The penultimate day of the festival attracts some of the most prestigious racing of the week, with the long-established Socialites E-Cigarettes Doncaster Cup Gentlemen’s Day taking centre-stage, before the Ladbrokes St. Leger Stakes brings the four-day bonanza to a dramatic climax on September 12.

ES What’s On The Colour of Time (19 September) unleashes a rainbow eruption of powder and dance onto the streets of Doncaster © Chedly

You’re missing out if you haven’t made it... From dazzling dinosaurs to festive panto, you’ll find all kinds of performances at Doncaster’s Cast in the coming months.

I

t’s late summer, some might even say autumn, which possibly means its time to start thinking about Christmas… after all, Cast’s pantomime is on sale. But before that festive treat, Doncaster’s premiere theatre venue has a whole host of live performances. Here’s just a teaser of what’s to come as they announce their new season… First up, Cast quick-steps onto the stage with Dancehall (11-19 September). The show has a recognisable soundtrack from the last 80 years; expect music as diverse as The Beatles, David Bowie, Jamiroquai and maybe even Vera Lynn. Performers dance through the eight decades to remember not only what we danced to, but the big news stories that have shaped our town and personal true stories from people who have lived here.

74

And that’s not all. The venue is now two years old and going from strength to strength, so it continues its celebrations with international street theatre. Having clocked up thousands of miles as it’s toured the globe in the last two years, The Colour of Time (19 September) unleashes a rainbow eruption of powder and dance onto the streets of Sing-a-long-a Frozen

Doncaster… a free event – get ready to get coloured in! With over 80 events between September and December, there really is something for everyone. There’s theatre for families in many guises. For those who love Frozen (and know the words to ‘Let It Go’), there’s Sing-along-a Frozen (26 September), Disney’s film, where the audience are expected to dress up, join in and become the stars of the show. If it’s something more dangerous you want – hot on the heels of Jurassic World in the cinema – Cast are giving children and their families the chance to meet dinosaurs up close and personal in the smash-hit Dinosaur Zoo (27-29 September). Are you brave enough to sit in the Danger Zone when a T-Rex comes along?! The October half-term also sees another

Miss Nightingale

Children’s Festival (25-30 October) with the venue hosting free events alongside performances for all ages. For those looking for theatre for grown ups there’s plenty on offer. Highlights include Miss Nightingale – The Musical (16-17 October). A sell-out in last year’s programme, this show – filled with sex, scandal and showbiz 1940s style – is on its final ever UK tour… not to be missed; if only for the notorious ‘Sausage Song’ – see it and you’ll know exactly what we mean. Then there’s the bittersweet comedy You’re Never Too Old (22-24 October), with familiar TV faces Diane Keen (Doctors and The Ruth Rendell Mysteries) and Graham Cole (PC Tony Stamp in The Bill). The incredible balletLORENT return with a new production of Snow White (30-31 October), a mystical adaptation of the wellloved story: poisonous jealousy, mysterious miners and beauty as pure as snow. Music is from Doctor Who’s Murray Gold and words by Poet Laureate Carol Ann Duffy. Last year’s Tour De Yorkshire sparked another ‘Olympic’ moment, when the nation, with Yorkshire rightly at the forefront, showed its two greatest achievements to be sport and culture. One of the most talked about shows created at the time was Maxine Peake’s Beryl (19-21 November). Based on the true story of the unsung Yorkshire sporting legend Beryl Burton, West Yorkshire Playhouse’s tour cycles into town. There’s also a very special concert as Doncaster Choral Society perform with Doncaster’s very own Lesley Garrett (14 November). In memory of Lesley’s mother, who sang with the Choral Society for many years, the programme includes popular arias, duets and songs from the shows headlined by Britain’s favourite soprano. With more than one space (Cast boasts four theatre spaces in all) the season also includes dramatic and electrifying performances in more intimate settings. Pilot Theatre’s The Outsiders (24-26 October) is a “chilling and powerful piece” (The Stage). Then there’s madcap comedy in the form of a 1970s werewolf detective mystery, wrapped in a Hammer Horror cover, sprinkled with a maniacal troupe (think The League of Gentleman), and topped up with ham –

“If it’s something more dangerous you want, Cast are giving children and their families the chance to meet dinosaurs up close and personal.” plenty of it! Yes, He Had Hairy Hands (Tue 10 November) really is as crazy at it sounds. Cast rounds off the season where this article started… stepping into Christmas with its homegrown pantomime Sleeping Beauty (4 December-3 January). After two phenomenal years wowing audiences, this new show promises to be even bigger and better – and last year’s popular Dame returns… no man is safe, no woman will be jealous! All that and so much more to mention – including drag divas The Supreme Fabulettes (13 November), military brass music from the RAF (4 October), a whole festival dedicated to the marvellous music of Mozart (9-10 October) and more… You’ll just have to get down there. With over 82,000 audiences last year alone… you’re missing out if you haven’t made it yet!

ES Eating Out

Downtown Doncaster

O

K, so we’re in downtown Doncaster not New York, but if you want a taste of the genuine American diner experience without racking up a few thousand air miles, NYC Bar & Grill is the place to be. Burgers, dogs, ribs and chicken wings are the order of the day here, delivered with an almost overwhelming enthusiasm that may come with a South Yorkshire accent but is most definitely in the style of the Big Apple. By the time you are seated at one of NYC’s classic diner booths, complete with red and cream leather upholstery, you can expect to be on first name terms with at least two of the waiting staff (Hi, Jonathan and Emma!), and be given a full run-down of a menu full of naughty-but-nice American comfort food. Let’s face it; everyone fancies a cheeky burger occasionally, so when the mood strikes you may as well go for the genuine article. There are no short-cuts on taste here. Sauces and marinades are made in-house, even the ketchup, and all the burgers are pressed on site, using specially sourced West Country beef. So sit back, undo a notch on that belt buckle and immerse yourself in the big, bold flavours of the USA. Incidentally, the drinks list is pretty comprehensive too, with a big choice of American bottled beers, cocktails, mocktails, sodas and floats. After ordering a thirst-

quenching Goose Island Honkers Ale for me and an equally refreshing strawberry mock daiquiri for my companion, we set about selecting from that very busy menu. The choice, including sharers and combos, is pretty substantial so do take your time. For starters we shared a plate of jalapeno hot bites and some supercharged nachos that came buried under a pile of guacamole, sour cream, chunky salsa, more jalapenos, Monterey Jack and pulled pork. Generous portions and big, bold flavours are what NYC is all about and this got our meal off to a lip-smacking start. For mains I opted for a combination of ribs and chicken. Ribs most definitely are a house speciality – slow-cooked and marinated for 24 hours until the meat is tender and falling off the bone, this was finger-lickin’ food at its best with fries, corn on the cob and lovely crunchy homemade slaw as classic accompaniments. Co-headlining the main event was one of NYC’s style burgers – The Big Apple. This consisted of two expertly grilled burgers, Monterey Jack and pastrami, topped with more of that awesomely tender pulled pork and JD glaze in a brioche bun. Cajun fries, liberally seasoned with the special secret house mix of ground spices, really hit the spot. There is a fantastic selection of indulgent desserts and sundaes to round up your Bar & Grill experience, so do bring your hunger and wear your loosest-fitting clothes. We could

not resist the Boston brownie sundae, piled high with ice cream, chocolate sauce, cream and chunks of sticky, chewy brownie; and the doughnuts with chocolate and strawberry sauces. Actually, that final dish proved slightly overambitious, but the leftovers were very nicely boxed up for us to take away and, what do you know, it made for a tasty breakfast the following morning. Only in New York… or is that Doncaster?

What we ate: Starters Jalapeno hot bites, £4.95 Nachos with pulled pork, £8.95 Mains Half rack ribs, JD chicken & Tex Mex fries, £14.20 Big Apple burger & Cajun fries, £15.75 Desserts Boston Brownie Sundae, £4.45 Three stack donut pole, £4.95 Drinks Strawberry mock daiquiri, £3.50 Goose Island Honkers ale, £3.50 Espresso, £2.10 Latte, £2.35 NYC Bar & Grill 3 Wood Street, Doncaster, DN1 3LH Tel: 01302 365989 www.nycbarandgrill.co.uk

Don’t suffer the misery of back pain – Elizabeth Ann Therapies has a range of techniques to help you avoid agonising problems.

B

ack pain causes misery for many of us but there are treatments and techniques that can help to make life more bearable. Liz from Elizabeth Ann Therapies considers the options. Back pain is familiar to most of us at some time. Stress can gather in tight back muscles, and long hours of sitting at work or at a computer can make it worse. So back care is one of the best ways you can keep your body in optimum health. Therapeutic massage is very helpful to people suffering osteoarthritis pain. It helps improve circulation, reducing stress and muscle tension. It also helps to improve your range of motion. There are many different massages and techniques that can help specific problems. Swedish massage is particularly useful on specific pain spots in the back or neck. Trigger point techniques (concentrated pressure) are particularly good for relieving muscle spasms. I always recommend monthly back massages to help maintain good back health,

sorting out any imbalances before problems arise. They also help maintain pain-free movement and manage existing back problems.

Q&A:

Send your wellbeing questions to Liz @Elizabethann61@live.co.uk One will be chosen and published monthly. Clinic @ The Vanilla Rooms Bawtry www.ElizabethAnnBawtry.com Dear Liz I've been suffering terrible neck pain. At first I thought I'd slept awkwardly, but it keeps reoccurring and I'm now getting headaches with numbness, tingling in the back of the head, neck shoulders and hands. Have you any suggestions as to treatment that may help, or preventative measures to stop it happening. Dear Trevor It sounds like your neck pain could be causing the headaches, as you are suffering numbness

and tingling in the back of the head, neck shoulders and hands. Try to avoid things that will exacerbate the neck pain such as sitting at computers for long times, driving, lifting and other activities that require heavy use of the arms. Certain massage techniques can champion neck pain relief, penetrating the muscles and joints, removing toxins in the muscles, relaxing the muscles and improving joint mobility. Stress can increase neck pain, so an aromatherapy massage can help to relax and clear you of any pain. Hot and cold treatment are also good to relieve symptoms. All the above are availabe with me at The Vanilla Rooms Bawtry. Clinical Hypnotherapist/Complementary Healthcare Practitioner and Weight Management Consultant. Troubled by hair loss? Don’t worry, the Natural Look Clinic has a range of options to help you regain your look – and your confidence.

Natural choice

I

t is one of the most difficult physical imperfections to disguise. Unless a hat, wig or headscarf is worn at all times, hair loss is visible to all and can be a source of great distress for those who suffer from it. Fortunately for those in the Doncaster area, and beyond, there is a clinic that can help both men and women overcome the condition. For the last two years, Natural Look Clinic has been providing a first class service and delivering exceptional results for a range of treatments. They know that deciding who to trust with your cosmetic surgery is not easy. Placing your body in the hands of any professional can be a daunting prospect and it’s therefore so important to have faith in

every part of the experience – from your first enquiry to your aftercare. Specialising in improvement techniques that also help you to maintain optimum health, the clinic’s trusted and highly qualified medical professionals are among the region’s finest. Dr Richard Rogers is the clinic’s hair-loss specialist and has helped many sufferers – both male and female – in his 20-year career. The majority of his patients are men who have been affected by genetic hair loss, known commonly as male-pattern baldness, but he also treats a range of other conditions including loss of eyebrows and bald patches resulting from burns or scars. To identify the most appropriate treatment, and to ensure his patients are fully aware of the results that can be expected, Dr Rogers offers a free consultation. Though most people are suitable for hair transplant surgery – the clinic’s most popular hairloss treatment – this consultation also helps to rule out more serious causes of hair loss.

Ask about payment plans and packages

Transplant surgery involves removing a narrow strip of hairbearing scalp from the back of the head and using it to fill an area with thin or no hair. It is carried out under local anaesthetic and takes place on site at the clinic on Thorne Road in around four to five hours. The clinic is CQC-approved and supported by a team of NHS consultant anaesthetists, and an excellent team of nursing and reception staff. Every positive comment from the clinic’s many happy clients includes a favourable mention of the staff and this excellent customer service is something on which they pride themselves. If you’re looking to address your hair loss in the most natural way, the Natural Look Clinic is an ideal choice. Call the clinic on 01302 760222 to book a consultation or visit the website to find out more. Natural Look Clinic 104 Thorne Road, Doncaster DN2 5BJ Tel: 01302 760222 www.naturallookclinic.co.uk

ES Music

Tickhill is gearing up for a feast of musical entertainment… and you don’t even have to get your feet muddy!

Festival fever Words: Phoebe Seymour

W

ant to avoid extortionate big-name festivals in far away muddy fields? It seems every town and city is creating their own urban music playgrounds. Sheffield has Tramlines and Tickhill has TFest! It’s only the second TFest, but the popular Tickhill music event has already been firmly established in the local calendar. The biennial, one-day festival first took place in 2013 at 11 different venues all over the town. Taking place this year on Saturday 26 September, this event will be focussed on two venues with 50 talented acts packed into three stages instead. The Scarborough Arms will be providing rock and indie, whilst the Acoustic and Main Stages based at Tickhill Cricket Club are a mix of family-friendly genres. “We found that people missed a lot of performances because they were travelling between the venues,” says co-organiser Steve Madin. “We’ve condensed all our great acts into two venues bringing everyone together for a much bigger and better festival experience.” Headliner acts include Chris Madin & the Strictly Orchestra, who provide the famous soundtrack to the popular TV series Strictly Come Dancing, Sheffield-based pop-rock duo Rita Payne, who once appeared on BBC 1’s The Voice and Sheffield indie band The Sherlocks, who recently had a single in the top 50 UK single charts. There will also be performances by well-known local acts such as Doncaster band The Torn, rock/hip-hop act

www.regionalmagazine.co.uk

Kid 85 and Doncaster folk/rock band Stafford Galli. The success of the previous event has prompted some brilliant local artists who played in 2013 to return to the festival, whilst a surge of new artists and bands have been approaching the organisers. Over 180 have applied to perform, with many more requests still coming in. And it’s not just the performers that are eager to attend. An estimated 4000 people turned out for the last event, and this year looks to be even more Alfie popular. So what is it Sheard that locals and visitors alike love about TFest? “It’s a big thing for the community. The festival brings people to Tickhill who Stafford Galli

wouldn’t usually come here so it really keeps our economy and the town alive,” says Steve. “There’s a unique atmosphere here that attracts people of all ages.” There will be a number of caterers including a champagne and prosecco bar and a real ale bar for the grown-ups, along with entertainment for the kids, including facepainting, a bungee jump, zorb balls and inflatables. And whilst a lot of festivals mean leaving

the kids at a play area whilst the parents hit the stages, Steve and joint organiser Simon Stringer want the focus to be on families introducing children to live music and enjoying the experience together. TFest is very much an event hosted by the community for the community. Sound Array, the team who will be providing the audio, also work at Doncaster shop Electro Music, whilst the organisers have strong roots in Tickhill, as Steve runs two hairdressing businesses (SJ Grooming and Stephen Jon) and Simon, who is the marketing director of a Doncaster-based business, grew up in Tickhill. This year’s colourful official programme designed by Simon, costs £2 and a huge fraction of the money made on them will be donated to local cancer charity Aurora, who will also have a marquee at the cricket ground where people can enter a raffle and help raise funds. “We wanted to give something back,” says Steve. “Simon and I are proud to promote so many talented local acts and to be creating a real buzz. Why step out of this area when there are so many amazing acts on our doorstep?” Advance tickets Adults: £15 Children (aged 6-15): £6 Under 5s: Free Families (2 adults and 3 children): £40 Please note that ticket prices will increase on the day of the event. Unusual ideas

Great gifts can be hard to find – until now. For something different and quirky, head to Lyndon James Home and Garden.

S

ince the dawn of time, people have been giving gifts to each other. Present giving is a way of expressing affection and celebrating special occasions, and for those who have the time to carefully select a gift for a loved one, it can be extremely rewarding. Many of us however, simply don’t have this luxury and, what might start off as a casual shopping trip, can often end in mayhem. If this sounds familiar, fear not, because help is at hand in the form of a new quirky home and garden shop at Branton Farm Nurseries, which is brimming with unusual gifts. Lyndon James Home and Garden offers customers a range of home accessories, furniture, children’s toys and much more. Owners Howard Burnside and Tom Rodgerson started out eight years ago as furniture wholesalers, importing wooden furniture from Thailand. “We decided we wanted to focus on quality and be more selective about the products we were selling

www.regionalmagazine.co.uk

and so we made the move into retail,” Howard says. The new business launched last year and they began selling at county shows and Christmas retail shows across the country. Following such success, Tom and Howard decided it was time to have a permanent base for their business. “Branton Farm seemed liked the ideal option because we were looking to expand our retail offering,” Howard says. “We wanted to provide customers with something different and quirky, that you can’t get on the high street, at affordable prices.” Some of their items include cushions, ornaments, photo frames, children’s toys, scented candles, furniture and garden ornaments. They also have a range of children’s furniture and some wonderful children’s wooden rockers, which make a truly special Christmas gift – they are currently taking orders for Christmas, so make sure to get yours in now before it’s too late. As well as the many unique gifts on offer, Lyndon James also buys pre-loved furniture and gives it a new lease of life. They also offer a service to customers who are looking to refresh their own pre-loved furniture with a little colour. Simply photograph the item and take it into the store and

Howard will be able to give you a quote. Tom will then pick up the piece, take it to their warehouse – where it will receive some TLC – and return it back to you in a fabulously renewed condition. There’s no doubt this is the ideal place to pick up a special gift and, from the end of September, you will be also able to purchase rustic Christmas decorations from their upcoming store, which is going to be just next door to the current shop. Don’t forget to quote ‘Eastside’ when you make a purchase, to receive a fantastic ten per cent discount. MAKE IT SPECIAL Venue styling expert Janette had her dream wedding at The Crown Hotel… now she can help you to do the same.

W

hen Janette of White Rose Occasions’ partner Nick popped the question last Christmas, there was only one wedding venue that sprung to mind –The Crown Hotel in Bawtry. “I set up my venue styling business, White Rose Occasions, nearly nine years ago and have dressed a lot of hotels, but the Crown is by far the best. The whole ambience of the place – the staff, the food, the rooms, the secret garden – everything is just fabulous. It’s somewhere really special. “So when Nick asked me to marry him on Christmas Eve last year, we didn’t hesitate to call them and we booked it that day! They had just had a cancellation for the date we wanted, 4 July. We would have waited until next year if the date hadn’t been available but it was obviously meant to be. “They were brilliant from start to finish; they could not have done any more for us. The meal was so amazing that we got the head chef, Caz, to come out of the kitchen to say thank you and we all applauded her. She was so embarrassed! In between each course, Nick was talking to our guests and they were all saying how fantastic the food was. We had melody of mushrooms or a seafood platter to start, followed by fillet of beef or stuffed chicken breast for main and then pavlova or sticky toffee pudding. “We invited 103 guests, including my late husband’s family. Sadly, both Nick and I lost

our late husband and wife to cancer just a few short years after marrying. Everybody at the wedding had helped us through the hard times and this was our way of saying thank you to them. It was a fabulous, happy day but we made sure we didn’t forget Lyn and Rob and each guest received a designer Cancer Research pin. “We had both the ceremony and the reception in the Hogarth Suite. I spent two days dressing the room and garden in our vintage theme – lots of lace, roses and gypsophila with touches of rustic textures such as hessian to reflect Nick’s rural background. With the starlight backdrop and the ceiling and wall drapes, it looked absolutely beautiful and I received so many lovely comments. “This has inspired me to offer the Crown

some exclusive packages – bronze, silver, gold and platinum. “From a basic backdrop, table centres and favours to a full room dressing with seating plan, garden styling and all sorts of extras, I can provide a bespoke plan that is tailored to suit each and every couple for a very reasonable price. “This new venture is in keeping with the Crown’s philosophy of providing a superior service that is excellent value for money. I would highly recommend them and we are so thankful for everything they did for us. They made our day absolute perfection.” The Crown Hotel High Street, Bawtry, Doncaster, DN10 6JW Tel: 01302 710341 www.crownhotel-bawtry.com

Pupils from the two Sixth Form Schools, QE College and the Faculty of Queen Ethelburga’s, celebrated another year with a 100% pass rate for all Year 13 pupils, studying both A-Levels and BTECs, as well as fantastic grades and results.

satisfying personally to know that our ethos to work with every student individually, finding subjects from our wide range which they enjoy and can excel at, really achieves such fantastic outcomes.”

Yorkshire youngsters jumped for joy on results day at Queen Ethelburga’s Collegiate. Last year QE College was ranked 7th in the independent boarding schools’ league table, drawn up by the Sunday Times. It is the top school in the North of England and its impressive results this year should guarantee a high ranking again.

“It is another great results’ day and we are extremely pleased for our students, not just because of their grades but because they will now go on to study at some of the most prestigious universities in the world,” added the Head of QE College, Dan Machin.

The College has seen another outstanding year with its A-Level results. 80% of grades at A-Level were A*-A and 98% were A*-B.

Faculty Head, Kevin Oldershaw, agreed: “We are particularly pleased with the grades that our students achieved at A-Level, as well as our BTEC results. I am delighted to see so many of our pupils gain their places at some of the best universities, places that were studiously worked for and are now richly deserved.”

The Faculty of Queen Ethelburga’s, which offers students the opportunity to do more vocational subjects at BTEC, celebrated some of its best results ever. 80% of grades at A-Level were A*-A (up from last year’s 76%) and 96% of grades were A*-B (up from last year’s 90%). The Faculty’s 88% Distinction*-Distinction pass rate at BTEC (equating in UCAS points to an A/A* grade at A-Level) shows equal strength in these qualifications.

Ben, a student and former Head Boy at Queen Ethelburga’s gained A*, A and B to attend Oxford and was delighted by what he has achieved. “I am really pleased with the opportunity I now have to study at Oxford, which is one of the most prestigious universities in the world.” said Ben. “I have put a great deal of time, effort and hard work into my studies but would also like to pay tribute to the matching commitment shown by all of my teachers and the support staff at Queen Ethelburga’s,” he added. 18-year-old Mary Fesenko, from Leeds, will head to Oxford University in the autumn to study Biology.

18-year-old Ben Steward from Selby is delighted to have been offered a place to study History at Oxford University.

QE Principal, Steven Jandrell, was delighted with the news for both schools: “Once more it has been another highly successful year, with excellent A-Level and BTEC results. Our pupils and teaching teams have worked hard to produce brilliant grades and they should all be very proud of what they have achieved.” “These results will again confirm our place as one of the top schools in the independent sector in the country, but it is also very

Mary gained A* in English, A* in Russian, A* in Chemistry and A in Biology and was delighted by her achievements. “I logged onto the UCAS website to see whether I had been offered a place or not and when I saw that I had been assigned Magdalen College I was pretty speechless,” she said. “I know it sounds like a cliché, but this really is an amazing opportunity and if I can survive the rigours of three years of study at Oxford, I think I can get through anything.” Mary has high ambitions with her further studies. She hopes to work in the area of public engagement and science, or as a scientific advisor to the government or even work in scientific research exploring the use of stem cells. “My time at Queen Ethelburga’s has been fantastic and has really helped prepare me for life at Oxford. I have had a brilliant opportunity getting to know lots of people from different backgrounds and different cultures and won’t forget my time here.”

Lolly Hernandez, 18, from Ripon. Lizzie Clarke, 18, from Strensall. James Cornforth, 18, from Plompton near Harrogate. Hermione Sheffield, 18 from Stillington. Tom Somers, 18, from Brandsby. Jack Fisher, 18, from Rawcliffe. Ben Steward, 18, from Selby,

Mary’s fellow students at the two Sixth Form Schools, QE College and the Faculty of Queen Ethelburga’s, were also celebrating an excellent set of A-Level and BTEC results. The schools welcomed another year with a 100% pass rate for all Year 13 pupils, studying both A-Levels and BTECs.

Afghanistan hero Ben has latest diagnostic treatment at Spire Leeds Hospital Ben Parkinson suffered horrific injuries when the Land Rover he was travelling in hit a landmine in Helmand Province, Afghanistan in 2006. The paratrooper broke his back, hips, ribs and suffered brain damage, which affected his memory and speech. His legs were so badly damaged surgeons had to amputate both above the knee. Ben, now 30, from Doncaster, is still on his long journey to recovery and he recently visited Spire Leeds Hospital for videofluoroscopy, which assesses swallowing. His mum, Diane Dernie, said the family is delighted with the findings. “When Ben was Neurospeech and language specialist Judith Scholefield and Dr Damian Tolan, injured doctors expected he might not be consultant radiologist at Spire Leeds Hospital, with Ben Parkinson able to eat solid foods again. The assessment provided us with evidence that Ben is not in danger when he eats and drinks.” Ben, who still serves in the army, has teamed up with military charity Pilgrim Bandits as their ambassador patron, to inspire wounded soldiers to live life to the full, as well as giving inspirational talks to schools and colleges. ES Eating Out

Words: Fiona Barber

It’s carnivore’s paradise at The Filling Station Smokehouse … but make sure you go hungry!

Mighty meaty! What we ate Starters Wings with hot sauce, £4.50 Crab cakes, £5 Mains Full rack St Louis ribs, £16.95 Wings and baby-back ribs combo, £14 Chilli side, £3 Dessert Salted caramel and cookie dough cheesecake, £4.50 Drinks Peanut butter milkshake, £3.50 Bottle Brooklyn beer, £3.95 Pint Samuel Adams, £4 The Filling Station Smokehouse 86-88 E Laith Gate, Doncaster, DN1 1JE Tel: 01302 367580 www.thefillingstationsmokehouse.com

T

he very least you’d expect from a restaurant is for it to fill you up. And while there’s no surprise The Filling Station Smokehouse in Doncaster can do exactly that, the diner does so with style and taste. Big portions and bold décor certainly play their part at the diner, but the quality of meat and cooking methods are what really set it apart. Ribs, pork, brisket and wings are all cooked in a smoker – a chamber for meat, which uses hickory chips to really seal in the flavour. The benefit of using a smoker is tremendously tender meat that falls off the bone. So much so in fact, their menu claims, that ‘you don’t need no teef to eat our beef’. We began our American feast with chicken wings, which come served with a choice of homemade buffalo hot sauce, buf-aque (a combination of hot sauce and barbeque) or barbeque bourbon. I opted for the hot sauce and enjoyed a generous portion of huge, meaty wings, coated in a tangy sauce with just the right amount of heat. A cold Brooklyn beer served in a frosted glass was the ideal refreshing accompaniment. Across the table my partner tucked into the New England crab cakes; The Filling Station’s own recipe of white crabmeat, herbs and spices. The crunchy rye pankocoated cake was deliciously crisp, generously filled with the tasty meat and the additional

sweet-chilli sauce wonderfully offset the savoury flavours. We were both equally impressed by our starters, but were in no way prepared for what mains would bring. Two impressive trays layered with red and white checked paper were topped with a basket of crisp chips, coleslaw, side salad and extra dipping sauces. Although I was no match for the giant-sized full rack of St Louis ribs, they were undeniably some of the some most tender I have ever eaten. My partner was thrilled with his chicken wing and baby-back rib combo, which really demonstrated how the smoker tenderises the meat and locks in delicious flavours. After such indulgence, we wisely decided to share a dessert, and a salted caramel cheesecake topped with chunks of cookie dough provided the perfect sweet-treat ending our delicious feast. The Doncaster Filling Station is the second of its kind and opened last December following the success of its sister restaurant in Retford. Owners Martyn and Jon had a dream to bring traditional American smoked and barbeque food to the good people of Retford and Doncaster, and they have worked tirelessly to perfect their marinades and sauces. If you’re willing to roll up your sleeves and tuck into some of the tastiest meat in Doncaster, then you couldn’t be in better hands. Just like their menu reads: ‘we don’t do fast food, we do great food.’
