ST LEGER FESTIVAL

Joseph O’Brien with Capri led the field in the 2017 St Leger

ST LEGER FESTIVAL

Racing Choice FANCY A FLUTTER ON THE BIG RACE? ROBERT PLUMBRIDGE CONSIDERS THE EARLY EYE-CATCHERS FOR THIS YEAR’S DONCASTER ST LEGER KEW GARDENS Aidan O’Brien, right, is a trainer who simply loves to win a British Classic. He’s saddled 5 winners of this race over the years, including last year’s gallant winner Capri. His main entry this year looks to be Kew 2017 Gardens, who winner: Capri succeeded at Royal Ascot at the same distance of the Doncaster feature. He outclassed his rivals that day by winning by 4 and a half lengths in Group 2 competition. This will be a step up in terms of class, but he’s got plenty going for him with plenty of stamina to boot. He found the step up to Group 1 company no problem at all in France last time out, winning by a cosy enough margin, having previously found things a little too hot to handle in this year’s Epsom Derby. He’s the early favourite for the race, and any runner from this stable must be hugely respected. LATROBE

Picture: Andrew Kelly Photography

As the saying goes – like father like son. And in no sport is that saying more common than horse racing. Family connections are very much run of the mill in the racing game, but none can boast as much success as the O’Briens. Joseph O’Brien (right), having won numerous Group 1 prizes – including the St leger has begun life as a trainer in his own right in startling fashion. His biggest success came last year winning the much-coveted Melbourne Cup (one of the few big prizes his father has yet to collect, but don’t mention that to Aiden!). Joseph saddled Latrobe in the St Leger, the horse which won this year’s Irish Derby – beating no less than four of his father’s horses who finished 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th! He kept on superbly well in the finishing stages in a manner suggesting the extra two furlongs demanded in September could be ideal. Should he line up he’ll be towards the top of the market on the day, and the apprentice could once again eclipse the master.

WELLS FARRH GO Prepare for wild celebrations should Wells Farrh Go get up to win on St Leger day. It has been a long time since the Republic Of Yorkshire has had a live contender for the big one at Donny. Trained at Great Habton, North Yokshire by the wiley Tim Easterby, this gutsy, tough individual promises to light up the stands if victorious. He’s proved to be very difficult to pass being a horse who likes to go out from the front and set the pace. This was evident in his latest triumph at Newmarket where he set a furious pace which caught out most of the field. He then hung on grimly in the final stages to beat more fancied runners who simply could not get past the son of Group 1 winner Farrh. He’s the type of horse you can’t help but love, and one thing is for certain, he’ll give everything he’s got to keep the St Leger shield within county boundaries. DEE EX BEE Another strong contender for the Yorkshire contigent – this time from the man who recently became Britain’s winning-most trainer Mark Johnston. Dee Ex Bee exceeded all expectation in this year’s Derby, finishing a superb 2nd to eventual winner Masar. It was a performance of enormous heart as we’ve come to expect from runners of this yard, and one which suggested the rigours of a St Leger battle might very well suit him down to the ground. LAH TI DAR The unknown quantity of the entry list. Could this superbly bred filly, owned by musical legend Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber have the untapped potential to go an win a race like this. She was ruled out of the Epsom Oaks in June due to an unsatisfactory blood test. But her entry in that race shows how highly her connection think of her. Indeed clearly not just her connections- the bookmakers had her as the favourite going into the race before she was pulled out. Her trainer John Gosden certainly knows his way around this race having notched up four wins including two on the bounce in 2010 and 2011. She’d certainly be a very interesting contender, especially receiving weight from the boys due to the sex allowance for fillies. Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk 19

2014 St Leger Winner Kingston Hill

Andrea Atenzi (in the red, right) triumphs at the 2015 St Leger on Simple Verse

The Winning Formula STAMINA, SPEED AND MENTAL TOUGHNESS... ROBERT PLUMBRIDGE EXAMINES THE ATTRIBUTES REQUIRED TO WIN THE LONGEST AND OLDEST BRITISH CLASSIC FLAT RACE. 24 Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk

he William Hill St Leger is the final British ‘Classic’ flat race of the season. The season begins with the QIPCO 2000 and 1000 Guineas at Racing’s ‘HQ’ at Newmarket, stops off at Epsom in July for the Investec Oaks and Derby before all eyes descend on Town Moore to round off the five races in the calendar considered traditionally as ‘Classics’ which are held annually and restricted to horses of 3 years or less. Not only is the St Leger the final of these, it is also the longest in distance. Meaning the horses have need additional skills in order to be successful from the others. But what makes a good St Leger horse? There’s a well-known proverb in racing that goes: The fastest horse wins the Guineas; the luckiest the Derby – and the best horse wins the St Leger. Having said that the first key attribute for a St Leger horse is class. In order to dine at the top table of British racing you need to have earnt you place in the field. St Leger winners have usually campaigned in the top ‘trial’ races early on in their careers, before running in Group 1 company in races like The Derby, 2000 Guineas, Irish Guineas to name but a few.

T

ST LEGER FESTIVAL

2016 St Leger Winner Harbour Law, ridden by George Baker

Last year’s winner Capri had won in Group 2 company, before landing the Irish Derby, so had plenty going for him. This trend runs throughout most previous winners, with most having at least raced before in Group 1 or at very least Group 2 races. Breeding is a hugely important aspect of British Flat racing, and when it gets to the upper echelons of the sport it’s clear that the good blood lines rise to top. You only need to take a look at last year’s 1st, 2nd and 3rd to see how much of a factor pedigree is with these animals. Last year’s champion Capri was a son of ‘super sire’ Galileo whose mighty achievements on the 2017 St Leger racecourse have been Winner eclipsed the world over by Capri those as sire. He well and truly is the daddy when it comes to fathering racehorses with his progeny dominating British Flat Racing for over 10 years. The 2nd and 3rd that day were Crystal Ocean and Stradivarius,

both fathered by Sea The Stars – one of the greatest racehorses of the modern era. As mentioned, the St Leger is longest of all the British Classics. At a distance of just over 1 mile 6 furlongs it’s a rather different test then the 1 mile run in the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket Racecourse. This means a greater emphasis is placed on stamina. The ability to finish strongly at the end of a quickly run 1 miles and 4 furlongs has been the hallmark of St Leger winners throughout the years. Horses to have triumphed had previously been tested at distances of 1 mile and 4 furlongs at least. Speed counts for little when you get to final furlong if you haven’t got the stamina to get the trip. Most St Legers are highly competitive affairs, and the winning distances are usually very small. This means a horse must have the mental toughness in the finish in order to get his or her head in front. The race has seen a number of gruelling battles down

Picture: Andrew Kelly

the Town Moore straight where often the gutsiest competitor prevails in the dying yards towards the winning post. ST LEGER TIP

Taking all of these key attributes for a St Leger, we’ve picked the horse currently set to line-up which matches these to point you towards the winner. There is one outstanding candidate that fits the bill when taking these factors into account. Kew Gardens, trained by 5-time winner of the race Aidan O’Brien fits the bill perfectly. He has competed at the highest level in the Derby, and won at Group 1 level most recently in France. Pedigree wise it’s impossible to have a better sire than Galileo who has fathered winners of this race previously. He’s won at the distance at royal Ascot, so the distance will not be an issue for him. His mental toughness will be tested and need to be taken on trust as all his wins have be fairly cosy so he’s yet to fight out a real duel and come out of the right side. Overall though, he has the best profile for the race. Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk 25

ST LEGER FESTIVAL

A Grand Day Out IT’S NOT JUST ABOUT THE RACING – ROBERT PLUMBRIDGE LOOKS AT FIVE WAYS TO GET THE MOST OUT OF YOUR TRIP TO THE ST LEGER FESTIVAL

See the horses in the parade ring Undoubtedly one of the best sights on the racecourse is the animals themselves. There’s nothing quite like seeing these athletes in their prime, up close and personal. The best way to do this is to see them walking around the parade ring before the race begins. Find the parade ring in front of the grandstand at Doncaster, and get a spot around 20 minutes before each race to see them in the flesh.

Go to the winner’s enclosure after the St Leger The Saturday at Doncaster comes to a crescendo at the running of the William Hill St Leger. After the race make sure you’re at the winner’s enclosure to see the triumphant jockey, horse and trainer be greeted by the huge crowds that gather to cheer them in. There will be a presentation to the winning connections of the horse and celebratory scenes to savour.

Have a bet on the St Leger Part of the excitement many enjoy at the racecourse is having a bet on one of the runners. You can pick your horse based on form, trainer/jockey, pedigree, or if you like, more novelty methods such as colour of the jockey’s silks, name of the horse, or lucky number. Place your bet for as little as £1 and keep those fingers crossed.

ST LEGER FESTIVAL

Get a jockey’s autograph Every St Leger day the Stobart Jockey Hub located on course will have two famous jockeys signing autographs around 12.30pm. Locate the jockey hub on arrival and they will have all the info on who will be signing that day and when. It’s free and you can even chat to the jockeys whilst they sign your card.

Dress to impress Doncaster St Leger festival provides the perfect excuse for you to show off your finery. Whether you’re attending Ladies Day on the Thursday, or Gentleman’s Day on the Friday it’s a great opportunity to show off some style. There’s even a competition to decide who the Best Dressed Male All images: Andrew Kelly Photography and Female is. Don’t hold back! Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk 31

TRAVEL

Sail away FORGET THE PAIN OF THE PLANE, TRAVEL TO NEW YORK IN STYLE ONBOARD THE CUNARD QUEEN MARY II. BY CARMEL STEWART. sometimes think it would be easier if we were all required to wear pyjamas when travelling by air. That way we would have less hassle at airports having to take off coats, jackets, jumpers, shoes and belts while sorting out bags, laptops, phones, keys, cash, liquids and, in some cases, pushchairs, toddlers and nappy bags. It’s for our security, I hear you say, and so it is, but that doesn’t make it any easier so when the invitation arrived to spend Christmas in New York, I hesitated. Airports at Christmas? Hmm. But I had the time and was saving on hotels, so it seemed churlish to refuse. Keen to avoid the easy-peasy, cheap and squeezy airlines, I looked at an alternative means of transport and came up with a Cunard non-stop crossing on the Queen Mary II. Not to be confused with a cruise, for me this was a strictly one-stop journey from Southampton to New York, which is far less stressful than you might imagine. First off, there is a train directly from Sheffield to Southampton. Off the train, into a taxi; out of the taxi into the departure lounge; bags whisked away almost before the taxi had come to a halt. Slight moment of panic – were they so efficiently dispatched by a port employee or by an opportunist thief? Momentary hesitation and then relax. I’m on holiday. I have my passport, my ticket, my bank card and my Kindle, what else do I need?

I

An upgraded cabin with balcony

36 Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk

Entry to the departure lounge was equally straightforward. Walk through the doors and you’ll be presented with a coloured card, up the escalator to the spacious waiting area with free magazines and newspapers, plus coffee, tea and snacks at not too exorbitant prices. Then it is merely a question of waiting for your colour to be called. So long as you have your passport, a printed copy of your ticket and a printout of your ESTA (US Visa), check-in is very simple and hassle free. There is the inevitable security screening but it’ll take all your ‘Merry Christmas’ bags without a murmur – Henderson’s Relish, hot sauce selection, mince pies and all. A short stroll later and you arrive on board what can only be described as a floating luxury hotel. The setting is truly spectacular with a magnificent central staircase, endless corridors, wonderful dining rooms, dance hall, theatre, planetarium and swimming pools. There is even a kennels staffed by qualified professionals, so your pets can also travel in style. Excellent food is available in multiple locations; the Queen’s Grill, the Princess Grill, the Britannia Club, King’s Court and the Golden Lion pub among them. There are multiple activities too. Joining in is optional. Some entered everything with huge enthusiasm, others were of the bah

humbug variety and kept clear. You can dress up for dinner or not – although eating after 6pm requires smart/casual at the very least. Some took the plunge with long frocks, bow-ties and cummerbunds, others skated very close to the edge with black jeans and Tshirts. I was not keen on joining the choir, learning to paint, Trivia tournaments or ballroom dancing but I did learn to play backgammon, thanks to Terry who was not an employee but an enthusiast, eager to spread the word. If I have a point of criticism it has to be for the internet access which was truly dreadful. Not that that was anyone on board’s fault. It is what it is but the fact that Cunard charges were so high was a bone of contention among all trying to log on – or indeed log off. I paid more than £80 for my 240-minute package. It regularly took me 20 minutes to access my emails, five minutes to read them and a further 20 minutes to log off – all

TRAVEL

Carinthia Lounge

included in the paid for time. I twice had to go to reception and ask them to log me off as my laptop was stuck fast. So, Cunard, why not make it FREE? It won’t change the doziness of it all but it will stop people complaining. One thing about which there was no complaint was our guest speaker – Sir Ranulph Fiennes – an excellent entertaining speaker and a thoroughly pleasant gent into the bargain.

THE DETAILS: A transatlantic Christmas crossing on the QMII costs from £889 per person. That fare includes the crossing, food and soft drinks in certain areas. It also included the flight home but not any alcohol. Fine dining requires an upgraded cabin. Normally, I would advise travellers to book the best they can afford but, if New York is your final destination, select the cheapest you can live with for a week. You’ll have access to all the shows and entertainment. The food in King’s Court is wonderful and plentiful. Service is help yourself – and people did, believe you me – but it’s relaxed and comfortable. Afterwards you can stroll across to the Carinthia Lounge for coffee. If you are feeling really anti-social, room service is available free of charge. There are plenty of areas to sit and relax during the journey. A balcony suite will give you the same view of the Atlantic mile after

mile but that’s about it. If you decide to go on to the Caribbean, more expensive accommodation is worth considering. On boarding you will be required to register your bank card. Any expenses incurred will then be deducted. There are many upmarket shops on board as well as places for fancy coffees and cocktails, spa treatments and hair styling – all of which will be added to the final tally. If you travel with the family a check on expenditure every couple of days will save palpitations at the end of the voyage. Note too, that, unless you ask to have it removed, you will automatically be charged tips at between $11.50 and $13.50 per person per day, depending on accommodation. You will also find 15 per cent has been added to your bill for any bar, wine or salon services. It all adds up if you are not careful. Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk 37

Slugs and snails and puppy dog tails... CHILDREN CAN LET THEIR IMAGINATIONS RUN WILD – AND IMPROVE THEIR WRITING SKILLS – AT A UNIQUE ROTHERHAM MAGIC SHOP AND CHARITY. PHOEBE SEYMOUR REPORTS. nce upon a time there was a shop in Rotherham called Grimm & Co’s Apothecary to the Magical. It was established in 1148, before lunchtime, by Master Graham Grimm (the Grimm Brothers’ uncle). But recently, he made the groundbreaking decision to make it visible to all beings, including mortals… That’s the version of events Sarah Christie, creative learning manager at Grimm & Co, will tell you if you say you are a magical being. But the mortal version is arguably just as exciting. Grimm & Co is not only a magic-themed shop, but a charity that champions the writer in every child. In 2011, Deborah Bullivant headed a two-year project called Inspire Rotherham, which introduced a number of new creative approaches to education. The University of Sheffield found that these creative approaches had an unprecedented impact on children’s assessment results. In particular, young boys who had previously felt disengaged from reading and writing were achieving significantly better SATs results by the end of the project. Wanting to take this further, Deborah went

about setting something up more long term. She stumbled across a Ted Talk by Dave Eggers called My Wish: Once Upon a School, which talks about a charity in San Francisco called 826 Valencia, a pirate-themed shop Deborah Bullivant and her team

with a writing centre behind it. Inspired, she launched Grimm & Co in 2014. Starting with a small shop, the charity quickly gained momentum and moved to a much bigger, purpose-built space a few roads

over on Doncaster Gate in February 2016. The store itself is a feast for the eyes – whether you’re a kid or an adult. The first thing you’ll see is colourful soaps with names such as Goblin Mucus and Human Blood, Sweat and Tears, and rows of jars of leprechaun glitter and fairy dust – all with old fashioned-looking apothecary labels attached with humorous descriptions. All the money from these locally-sourced soaps, sweets and accessories go toward funding the charity. On entering the store, Sarah showed me to the museum section, which features items from famous fairy tales such as the pea from The Princess and The Pea and Cinderella’s glass slipper. I also stepped on some scales to find out what magical creature I am (troll – apparently) and found bundles of scrolls. Sarah explained that these were replies to letters local children had posted to magical creatures in the realms beyond. Then turning to a seemingly normal shelf filled with Grimm & Co stationary, Sarah lifted a bottle, and like something out of a Harry Potter book, she opened a secret door leading to a workshop space. Events take place on the first floor – a quirky, old fashioned library, with ivy growing up the walls and a patio area that overlooks the shop below. We then went to the WC – Writing Centre, where the creative magic happens. Fittingly, the room is playfully kitted out with toilet seat chairs, white tiles and toilet rolls. Sarah explains that it’s these weird and wonderful features that spark kids’ imaginations. “The space has a big impact, and as soon as

you walk through the door, you’re out of your everyday, in this space where everything around you is full of imagination and the people who run the workshops are committed to it. “It’s not home and it’s not school. It’s this other flexible space, kids have ownership of. The key thing is that it’s fun. We take fun very seriously and I think if you’re not enjoying [being creative], you won’t feel any urge to do it independently. “There’s also an element of purpose. The workshops have an end output so you’re writing a story that’s going to get published or pitching a project that is going to get made.” Every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday morning during term time, schools are welcome to attend story making workshops, where children aged seven to 11 write and create their own books, which they take away at the end. And then for children aged seven, eight and nine, there are comedy writing classes developed by Jeremy Dyson from the League of Gentlemen, who is also a trustee of the charity. Other famous supporters include, patron Joanne Harris, author of Chocolat, while 15 associated artists from a range of professional backgrounds often come to share their knowledge. There’s also a product development class where children learn about how Grimm & Co’s products are made and sold in their store. Fusing literacy and enterprise, children can then create a product in groups and then come back and present them in a Dragon’s

Sarah Christie, creative learning manager

Den-style event, where real ‘dragons’ decide whether to invest. And until the third week of August, while school is out, kids can sign up to do songwriting classes. The lyrics they create will be recorded by professional musicians, and in spring 2019, Sarah and the team plan to do a one-day festival at Wentworth Woodhouse, where the songs will be performed. You will also be able to catch the Grimm & Co team on 7 and 8 September at the Rotherham Show at Clifton Park, where they will be promoting another project called the Embassy for Reimagining Rotherham. What’s more some of their programmes are run through the Arts Award, a nationally recognised qualification. But as Sarah concludes, it’s not about rating and comparing children – it’s simply about getting them excited about engaging with their creativity. “It’s about unleashing their imaginations, but then giving specific positive feedback. Many feel so switched off, that they feel like writing isn’t for them, so it’s about building up confidence. “From the evaluations we’ve received from kids, guardians and parents, we’re told how this feels like a safe space and how they feel so much more confident and comfortable to be themselves and I hope that’s something they are able to carry into the rest of their lives.” If you’d like to find out more about Grimm & Co’s upcoming workshops or volunteering opportunities, join their mailing list by visiting www.grimmandco.co.uk or keep an eye on their Facebook page, @GrimmAndCo. DANNY ABRAHAMS Self-taught landscape artist Danny Abrahams was introduced to the art world at the age of 32, as a way to help fill the void that had been left by no longer playing music in a band. Art has become the focal point of Danny’s life, and, as a true Yorkshireman is influenced by the local beauty of the northern landscape. His ability to find beauty in everyday images in astounding, and the sky’s - an everyday natural wonder - overall beauty, emptiness, rawness and power sets the backdrop for many of his works. Usually working with oil on a board, he captures the many moods of landscapes and magical skyscapes. His natural ability, creative mind and use of vibrant colours result in some stunning pieces.

Three of the art world’s best We put the spotlight on some of the leading artists with work on show at Limited 2 Art.

L

imited 2 Art exhibits many of the world’s leading artists including Kerry Darlington, Ruby Keller, Alexander Millar, Debbie Boon, Doug Hyde, Jean Picton, Danny Abrahams, Sean Durkin, Jack Vettriano, plus American artist Todd White, to name but a few. Here, we take a focus on three of the artists and their work showcased in the gallery.

RUBY KELLER Ruby Keller is the pseudonym for the highly skilled artist, Peter Worswick. He’s always challenged different styles, techniques and methods, and painting under the name Ruby Keller allows him to explore and push the art boundaries. Peter grew up in a small town in Lancashire and, after studying art and design he travelled around Europe settling in Paris for three years. He recently returned to England, and now works out of a studio in Cumbria. As an artist, Peter believes in experimentation, constantly striving to keep the work fresh. He delights in working with fabric textures, and regularly changes his subject matter to challenge himself, enhance creativity and hone his style, interpretation and technique. The mixed media paintings showcased at Limited 2 Art show a vibrant yet subtle use of colour, capturing the world around him on canvas with humour.

SEAN DURKIN Limited 2 Art is home to numerous works from well-known artist Sean Durkin. Full of narrative and wit, his work is both powerful and playful. His father, John Durkin in 1972, held to ransom a Lowry painting of Middlesbrough Town Hall and St Hilda’s Church. In exchange for it’s safe return he demanded the Lord Mayor raffle his underpants, the gallery be installed with a better alarm system and be opened on Sundays. Sean remembers being fascinated by the atmosphere of the painting and ‘matchstick’ people, and it ultimately was what inspired him to become an artist. Now, Sean’s atmospheric work is created using rough textured surfaces to suit the grittiness and mood of his paintings. They are full of narrative, prompting the viewer to wonder about the lives of the ‘matchstick’ men, and, as a reminder of his father’s stunt he paints a burglar and policeman in every painting.

BAWTRY BOUTIQUE OWNER LAUNCHES APPTOPAY Independent fashion retailers will soon be able to offer customers instant, interest-free lines of credit with a smartphone-based app that makes in-store transactions 40 times faster than current offerings. Set to be launched in October, AppToPay has been developed by James Jones, owner of the family-run, award-winning independent boutique Robinsons of Bawtry. The app allows independent retailers to offer shoppers the level of in-store finance usually reserved only for major retail chains. “At Robinsons of Bawtry, we have been looking for years for someone who could provide us with a store card,” said James. “They simply don’t exist for businesses of our size. The only options require at least 10,000 new issuances a year. For all but the biggest retailers, that’s totally unachievable.” He decided to create the app to allow retailers to offer their customers interest-free lines of credit via their smartphone or tablet. Customers apply online and, once approved,

Customers get a decision typically within minutes, a credit limit is established and a direct debit is set up to collect re-payments. Retailers get paid in full within a few days and repayment periods for each purchase range from two to 12 months. AppToPay runs on both Apple and Android and will be available via Apple’s App Store and the Google Play store. The app will launch with a live one-month trial period in October, before being rolled out nationwide. Retailers ican find more information or register for the service at www.apptopay.com.

These testimonials should give you a feel for the type of service that you can expect from us. Please visit our website to see further written and video testimonials “The idea of selling a house would normally fill me with dread. I’ve never really had a good experience and always viewed it as something that you just have to put up with. This year, that perception has changed. From the start of the process with Open Door, I felt confident that Shaun and his team were going to work very hard to initially market my property with a view to sell. Within hours, the property was on the market with a realistic asking price. Soon after, Shaun was filling his diary with viewings and made sure that buyers were visiting the property within a quick timeframe. This resulted in a sale at a price that I was extremely happy with. Overall, I received an exceptional service from Shaun and the team at Open Door.” James W from Doncaster “When I decided to sell my house, I contacted Open Door and was visited at a time to suit me by Shaun who explained everything about the company's service. Shaun then left his contact details, giving me time to think about things. I contacted Shaun again and he returned to see me and take photos of my house himself so that it could be advertised. This was on a Monday. On the Thursday (three days later), Shaun brought two prospective buyers to view my home. He then negotiated a very good sale price for me with the buyers and my house was sold - amazingly, within three days of being advertised. I jokingly said to Shaun that he was like a little terrier who does not let go until he has secured the deal! To summarise, Shaun from Open Door did a fantastic job; he was very professional; and he kept me updated throughout. He dealt with absolutely everything - all I had to do was sit back and let Shaun do his work, which he did to an extremely high standard. If anyone out there is considering using Open Door to sell their home, my advice would be: ‘go ahead, you will not regret it.”

Opening hours: 9am to 5.30pm Monday to Friday. Weekend viewings and valuations on request.

And, if the buzzing atmosphere of Bawtry doesn’t draw you in, the eatery’s innovative seasonal menu surely will. The cocktail bar and bistro perfectly combines contemporary style with homely charm, and with its repurposed barrel bar tables, feature bar, garlands decorating the menu board and copper lighting, I immediately fell in love with the décor. Due to the extensive cocktail menu, it was difficult to choose and after much deliberation (and some much-needed advice) I opted for the Baby Blossom Fizz (£8.20); a gin-based baby pink tipple with a hint of rosewater, and I was not disappointed, while my partner and designated driver had a Pepsi (£2). For starters I couldn’t resist the antipasti board (£10). Served with a selection of fine meats, shallots, sundried tomatoes, feta and olives it was the ideal dish for this warm weather. Each element had a delectable flavour,

and pairing the chorizo with sundried tomatoes, crumbly feta and olives offered a smoky yet sweet taste. My partner chose the venison bon bon (£6.50); tender, rich and beautifully presented and surrounded by an explosion of purple beetroot gel. The 8oz filet mignon (£22) was cooked to medium perfection, and the delicate cut of meat came served with creamy dauphinoise potatoes, a melt-in-the-mouth blue cheese mousse and carrot puree, which my partner claimed was one of the best things he had ever eaten. However, the seabass (£12) for me, was the stand-out dish of the evening; cooked and seasoned beautifully, and partnered with an inventive red pepper coulis and parmentier potatoes. Saying my partner has a sweet tooth is an understatement, so it was no surprise that he chose the chocolate luxury crepe (£7). Filled with homemade dark chocolate sauce and helpings of vanilla ice cream and Chantilly cream, it was a chocolate lover’s heaven. I opted for the Liqueur 43 chocolate truffle with raspberry sorbet (£5.50) which was a perfect

balance of rich and refreshing. What stood out about 31 Market Place Cocktail Bar & Bistro, was not only the delicious seasonal food and exceptional presentation, but the friendly and attentive service from the staff. So, if you’re looking for the perfect eatery to while away the evening with friends and family over a tipple or two - and of course stunning food - this is the place for you. 31 Market Place Cocktail Bar & Bistro 31 Market Place, Bawtry, Doncaster, DN10 6JL Tel: 01302 714 917 www.31marketplacebawtry.com

Top tier tea! Megan Booker enjoys an afternoon treat at Classic & Contemporary Coffee Shop.

I

f you’re looking to treat someone to a truly scrumptious afternoon tea look no further than the Classic & Contemporary Coffee Shop. Their delightful afternoon tea at just £11.95 is great value for money with three tiers of delicious homemade bakes, and a wonderful selection of finger sandwiches. And of course, tea. The team at C & C go all out to make their afternoon tea a special experience. The table is set with a crisp, white tablecloth, each place is set with polished cutlery and plates personalised with the C & C logo... a very classy flourish. Once seated, you’re asked for your preference on tea or coffee. I chose tea and shortly after, I was presented with not only a pot of tea, but a complimentary glass of iced water and another teapot the same size filled with extra hot water. Time for the piece de resistance. Preliminaries dispensed with, afternoon tea was served on the classic tiered cake stand. The bottom tier consisted of an assorted selection of finger sandwiches on a mixture of white and granary bread. They’re quite generously sized finger sandwiches too – not the thin slivers that can leave you unsatisfied, 28 | www.visitbawtry.com

but still small enough to maintain the elegance situations like this demand. You get four different fillings – tuna mayonnaise and cucumber, egg mayonnaise, cheddar and red onion, and ham and tomato. The ham and tomato sandwiches were a particular favourite with thick slices of ham and super fresh tomato. The middle tier holds four fresh, homemade scones – two classic fruit scones, and two traditional cherry scones – accompanied with butter, clotted cream and mini jars of strawberry jam. The scones were generous in size and baked to perfection; a lovely crunch as you bite into the crust reveals a soft and fluffy centre inside. If you’re the type who likes to really go for it and load up with as much butter, cream and jam as possible, just ask and more will arrive at no additional cost. Saving the best until last, my personal highlight was a sweet top tier which consisted of soft and gooey mini brownies, light and fluffy mini lemon drizzle pieces with a zingy lemon curd filling and a thin layer of buttercream running through the centre, traditional mini raspberry Bakewell slices, and finally, mini millionaire shortbread portions that were the perfect balance of shortbread, caramel and

that all important chocolate layer. All the cakes were homemade and each as delectable as the last. You won’t want to waste a mouthful but if you can’t manage everything the C & C provide on their afternoon tea, you can box it up for later. The quality and the amount of savoury and sweet treats you get on this afternoon tea – plus the outstanding service – is enough to make the C & C worthy of a visit. And with such reasonable prices you don’t have to wait for a special occasion to revel in this luxury of the occasion. Great food in stylish surroundings…what’s not to like? says Megan Booker.

T

he Classic & Contemporary Coffee Shop is the perfect example of why you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover. Located in the Yorkshire Caravan Park, this gem of a café doesn’t look much from the outside – but inside certainly fits the name. It’s beautifully decorated in an attractive, classic and contemporary style and deceptively spacious. As you enter this stylish coffee shop, you are greeted with a pleasing atmosphere, as the venue is buzzing with people of all ages. From families to ladies who lunch, this coffee shop is designed for everyone. You are also immediately drawn to the glass counter filled with delightful cakes and mouth-watering baked goods. There’s plenty of staff so you are seated quickly and they’re all very friendly. Our waitress Grace was particularly attentive and her energy was infectious – a real asset, and a guarantee that those all-important first impressions would be overwhelmingly positive. The lunch menu boasts a wide choice – from salads and paninis, to something more substantial like jacket potatoes and hearty main meals. There’s also a good selection on the children’s menu. My sister and I ordered the gourmet fishcakes (£7.25) and the bacon, brie

and cranberry panini (£7.45). The food arrived promptly, and the portions were very generous. Bacon, brie and cranberry is a classic combination, familiar as a sandwich filling in lots of cafés, but where some are less than generous our panini was bursting with filling and flavour. Served with crisps, a side salad and coleslaw, the C & C’s paninis are definitely the

ones to beat. The gourmet fishcakes are also very enjoyable and a far cry from your ‘mostly potato’ chip shop fare. These beauties are crammed with fresh fish and other flavours like leek, making for a perfect, more substantial, lunch time meal. Served with a plentiful portion of chips, mushy peas, tartar sauce and a side salad, this was a real treat and also great value for money. We washed everything down with a cinnamon latte (£2.30) and a mocha (£2.60) – and couldn’t help but indulge in something sweet in the form of those cakes that had caught our eye on arrival. We shared a luxurious, creamy piece of coffee and Bailey’s cake, and decadent, fudgy piece of chocolate orange cake. Both were absolutely divine, so moist and light yet not overpowering or sickly. A slice of cake is £3.45, and worth every penny. I cannot rate the cakes at the C & C enough and, if you’re too full for a dessert after lunch, don’t miss out... take something home. It’s definitely worth the calories. Classic & Contemporary Coffee Shop Great North Rd (Yorkshire Caravans), Bawtry, Doncaster DN10 6DG Tel: 01302 711 900 www.bestcakes.co.uk

Settle in for starters comprising duck parfait, serrano ham and three tastes of melon, and there’s traditional roast turkey, sirloin of beef and breast of guinea fowl for the main event. Cooking Christmas dinner means militarystyle planning and a mountain of washing up. So why not let someone else do the hard work for you? Adults can savour country-style roasts, festive desserts and a platter of Yorkshire cheese – washed down with warming winter tipples – while children wait eagerly for Father Christmas to arrive laden with gifts. New Year’s Eve

Make this New Year’s Eve one to remember and celebrate with an adult-only six-course dinner – comprising chilled tian of seafood, loin of venison and dark chocolate and Cointreau tort – followed by dancing, oldschool glamour, and surroundings so comfortable that you won’t want to leave. Shaken… and stirred RHIANA HUGHES ENJOYS SOME FIFTIES-STYLE FAMILY TIME AT AN AUTHENTIC AMERICAN DINER. alking through the doors of Shake and Bake, you’ll feel like you’ve travelled back in time to 1950s America. The restaurant’s booths, red and white checked tablecloths and American flags placed in the centre of each table take the mind directly to all those famous diner scenes from films we know and love. After a warm welcome, we took our seats and looked over the menu which was just as bright and colourful as the rest of the restaurant. My partner and I were both in the mood for a soft drink, but while he opted for a classic Coke (£3.00), I upgraded mine to a Coke float (£1 extra) as I couldn’t resist the sense of nostalgia it would bring. Not alone with my other half this lunchtime, we brought along his five-year-old son, Harvey, who couldn’t contain his excitement at the promise of a milkshake (£4.00 or 2 for £6.00). After the waiter gave him a long list to choose from, he decided on strawberry and was definitely not disappointed when it arrived with a large topping of whipped cream. For our starters we decided to share a portion of chicken wings (£4.50) and some halloumi fries (£4.00). The chicken wings

W

88 Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk

were perfectly crisp on the outside, while the chicken was soft and tender. We opted for hot sauce on the side, and we don’t think we could have made a better choice. Harvey decided that he wanted to singlehandedly tackle their nachos (£4.00) which came topped with a cheese sauce and a side of chilli, and he gave it a good go. When it came to ordering our mains, we went for the chicken and waffles and the Philly steak sandwich (both £7.00), which came with a side of fries and coleslaw, and we ordered a portion of tater tots (£2.00) for Harvey (and for us to pick at). The chicken and waffles came with a side of syrup which was swiftly drizzled across the plate and complemented both parts of the dish perfectly. The Philly steak sandwich was made up of grilled steak, onions, peppers and Philly cheese sauce, all put together between a soft bread roll, with each texture and flavour flattering the next to make a really well-rounded sandwich. The tater tots were difficult to leave to Harvey, as we all quickly learned why they’re such a popular dish in the US. When it came time to order dessert, we decided on their NY Baked Cheesecake and

their brownie (both £4.00). Both came with either ice-cream or whipped cream, the cheesecake was fluffy and light, and the brownie was warm, soft, and full of chocolate chips - heaven for a chocolate lover like myself. Afterwards, on our journey home, we noted that Harvey’s excitement throughout the meal showed that the American diner will continue on for generations to come, and while we might not be jetting off to the states any time soon, at least we’ve got Shake and Bake on our doorstep. Steak supreme CHRIS WILSON IS IMPRESSED BY THE MEAT FEAST ON OFFER AT MILLER & CARTER. ou see Miller and Carter steakhouses popping up all over the country these days and they’ve definitely found a niche. People like the familiarity and what they see as the guarantee of a certain standard of food and service, not unlike the way my parents’ generation, unused to dining out, put their trust in the good old Berni Inns back in the 1960s. But there’s nothing dull or predictable about something done exceptionally well, and as I entered a busy and bustling restaurant on a Tuesday night in August, a time of year when other food venues have tumbleweed drifting past their front doors as despairing managers wait for the school holidays to end, it occurred to me that they must be doing something right. So what’s the secret? Having previously dined at branches of M & C in Sheffield and Leeds, I headed to the Bessacar restaurant, just off the M18 link road, pretty sure that I knew what I was in for. On a certain level I was right. Steak is the name of the game here, sourced from 30-day aged British and Irish beef from cattle, from beasts aged 30 months or younger so the muscles aren’t overworked and the meat is more tender. As you can see I did my research, but everything’s spelled out on a very informative website. And while fish, chicken and vegetarian dishes are also available if you’re not in full carnivore mode you’re missing out on what M & C is all about. So my friend Andy and I decided to go all

Y

out with one of the menu’s main course show stoppers, the Butcher’s Block (£58.95). This trio of eight ounce steaks was just right for two very hungry people, while still sensible enough to ensure we were not straying into ‘man vs food’ territory. But what lifted our steak experience onto a higher plane was the sheer quality of the meat and the skill with which it was cooked. We thought we’d thrown down a challenge by asking for our three steaks to be cooked differently - medium for the rump, medium rare for the ribeye and rare for the fillet - but all were cooked perfectly and packed with smoky char-grilled flavour. The rump in particular, while carrying slightly more chew, was incredibly tasty. I understand now whey they call this underrated cut the chef ’s choice. Andy meanwhile revelled in the sheer tenderness of the thick, juicy fillet. Throw in some excellent seasoned fries, onion loaf, two spot-on steak sauces (porcini mushroom & black garlic and classic béarnaise) and a brisket-stuffed marrowbone and you have a formidable meat feast to linger long in the memory. And, as any M & C regular will know, no meal is complete without a wedge of crispy lettuce with a choice of dressing. Steak this good deserves a decent red wine of course and we shared a fantastic bottle of medium bodied Argentinian Aguaribay Malbec (£29.95). Or rather I had a few sips and watched my companion work his way through the bottle... the curse of being designated driver.

But if you are watching your intake, M&C is the only restaurant I’ve found serving Seedlip, a distilled non-alcoholic spirit that certainly passes muster if you can’t have your usual pre-dinner G&T. The Seedlip Spice 94 (£4.95), topped up with fiery ginger beer, was a sparkling start to my evening. Two excellent starters of garlic king prawns with toasted ciabatta (£6.95) and salt and pepper calamari (£6.95) had teed up our meaty shared main perfectly and a couple of sensibly light desserts in the form of crème brûlée (£5.25) which had that all-important crisp and slightly burnt topping and fresh berries with sorbet and meringue (£6.25) rounded the evening off perfectly. Going back to that very informative website again, all Miller and Carter head chefs must go to ‘steak school’ before they are allowed to be in charge of the kitchens. The chief steak slinger at the Besscar branch surely graduated with honours. Miller & Carter 329 Bawtry Road, Rossington, Doncaster, DN4 7PB Tel: 01302 867 329 www.millerandcarter.co.uk

Chips and everything! FISH BITS IS FAR MORE THAN JUST YOUR AVERAGE CHIPPY, AS RHIANA HUGHES DISCOVERED. ou’d be forgiven for driving or walking past Fish Bits and writing it off as just another chippy and while one half of the building is indeed a fish and chip shop, if you look to the left you’ll find their recently refurbished restaurant with a menu full of classics, treats and their popular new additions that are definitely not to be overlooked. Sixty years after the family business first started, John and Joanna Xenofontos have taken over from John’s parents, relaunching and revitalising what was once a café and turning it into a contemporary restaurant and grill. Despite the changes made to the restaurant’s menu and interior, the comfortable family feel remains the same, and we were immediately given a warm welcome when we walked through the doors. After being shown to our table, my other half (a South Yorkshire native) remarked that it ‘doesn’t feel like we’re sat in a northern chippy’, and I concurred, especially once I’d laid my eyes on their menu and saw the variety of dishes on offer. Our eyes were drawn to the bright blue ‘NEW’ areas of the menu, and we decided to

Y

share their classic platter (£12.99) for our starter. This consisted of a piri piri chicken skewer, BBQ chicken drumsticks, halloumi fries, garlic mushrooms and coleslaw as well as our choice of dips on the side and it was more than enough for two to share. Not one part of the platter was a let down, as each aspect was simple, fresh and perfectly prepared and presented. Once we’d settled on who was going to eat the last halloumi fry it was time to tuck into our main courses. After changing my mind a total of four times, I went for the Fish Bits Special (£7.69) and was treated to a medium cod with a generous portion of chips and a dip. The cod was fresh and seasoned to perfection, falling apart with the slightest touch of my fork, and my chips were well up to the high standard I expected from a fish and chip restaurant. My partner opted for their new Johnny Giant burger (£9.49) - a beef burger with bacon and a chicken fillet, layered with cracked pepper, melted cheese and served with a salad garnish, onion rings and sliced gherkins – a meat-lover’s dream. Barely stopping for long enough to tell me about his

meal, he managed to explain that each different meat component was seasoned and grilled faultlessly and the brioche bun holding it all together was the perfect touch. Having attempted to save a little room for dessert, we decided to share an Oreo milkshake (£2.99) and some of their Banoffee pie (£3.49). The Banoffee pie had been made by the owner herself, and I struggled to tear my partner away to get my fair share of it, and the Oreo milkshake was a refreshing end to the meal. “I’m Chintana, most people know me as Ton. I grew up in a village not far from the city of Ratchuburi in Thailand. I started cooking at a young age and used to cook for all my family. Mai Dang was my first restaurant I opened when I was 18 years old. Six Years later, I met my husband and we decided to start a family in Doncaster. Then this gave me the opportunity to open the first Thai Restaurant in Doncaster, The Bangkok Thai Restaurant. Ten years of running a successful business, we wanted to expand and we decided to open the Bangkok Royal Elephant. Now we’re starting a new chapter by opening the only Thai Restaurant in Doncaster, Thai At The Sal.” @TheSalutationUK @ThaiAtTheSal www.thesalutationdoncaster.com 01302 340705 The Salutation, 14 South Parade, Doncaster, DN1 2DR

It don’t mean a thing, if it ain’t got that zing! CHILLIS AND CITRUS WORK THEIR THAI MAGIC FOR CHRIS WILSON. t would be very easy to walk into The Salutation, enjoy a leisurely pint or two in what looks like a nice, friendly, old-fashioned pub, and walk away none the wiser about something rather different going on upstairs. There may be discreet signs to reassure hesitant souls such as myself that we really are in the right place, but if you’re not searching, they’re easily missed. Even so, judging by the steady stream of people who did make their way through the pub, up the stairs and into one of Doncaster’s hidden gems, the secret’s out. Thai at the Sal, a traditional Thai restaurant on top of a traditional English pub, is most definitely the real deal. It’s a family-run establishment with Thaiborn chef Ton, husband Graham and their son Joshua at the helm. And while the setting may be slightly unusual, anyone who remembers Ton from past local successful ventures including the Bangkok Thai and Bangkok Royal Elephant restaurants in Doncaster will not be surprised to learn that Thai at the Sal, which opened in December 2016, offers a totally authentic experience. The restaurant itself is small and friendly, nicely decorated with fresh flowers, and service is always attentive without being overbearing. Some Thai restaurant menus run to several

I

pages, leaving anxious diners with the impression that, having been overwhelmed by so much choice, they’ve probably chosen the wrong thing. Here they’ve managed to distil all that’s great about one of my favourite cuisines into a few pages. My friend Glyn and I were seated on tall stools at a lovely high table next to a window that was eye-catching from the street below because of its glorious overflowing flower boxes. We started our meal with one of the sharing platters. The Bangkok Platter (£11.95) was a delicious mix of prawn crackers, spring rolls, chicken satay, wantons, Thai fish cakes, chicken wings and spare ribs with three dipping sauces. Our appetites whetted, we proceeded to give the menu a thorough work-out. Sharing everything, we chose a Panang red chicken curry (£7.95), Pad Prik Thai Dum prawn and vegetable stir-fry (£12.95), Pad Thai stir-fried rice noodles with vegetables (£5.95), Thai sticky rice (£2.50) and Som Tum papaya salad (£6.95). Perhaps that sounds like a lot for two people but one of the joys of Thai food for me is the fact that it’s all about taste – the zing of fresh chillies and citrus, the heady aroma of fresh herbs – rather than the heavy carbs and thick starchy sauces that leave you feeling bloated. We certainly hadn’t over ordered. The

prawns were plump and juicy, vegetables retained their taste and texture, and the papaya salad was perfectly sharp and crunchy. One thing I rarely bother with in Thai restaurants is desserts but on this occasion we felt no inclination to rush away and really enjoyed the clean, fresh, palate-cleansing properties of lemon sorbet (£3.95) and coconut ice-cream (£4.95). Our Thai feast was washed down with a glass of rosé for me (£5.95) and a couple of Singha beers (£3.80 per pint) for Glyn. They have quite an array of cocktails and I was tempted after a foodie friend insisted that the best, or rather the only, drink to accompany any sort of spicy food is a margarita. I’ll bear that in mind for the next time, maybe not on a school night. Thai at the Sal The Salutation 14 South Parade, Doncaster, DN1 2DR Tel: 01302 340 705 www.thesalutationdoncaster.com

BLUE-SKY THINKING GRAND PLANS TO TURN DONCASTER SHEFFIELD AIRPORT INTO A HUGE ‘AEROTROPOLIS’ COULD TRANSFORM THE REGION’S ECONOMY, SAY BACKERS. ANDY WAPLE REPORTS.

n ambition to turn the region’s airport into a huge “aerotropolis” of US-style proportions would transform the economy of the whole of the North of England if its 20-year masterplan succeeds say business leaders. The vision for the future of Doncaster Sheffield Airport and its 1,600-acre site was launched in a blaze of hope and glory and has created real optimism throughout South Yorkshire and beyond. Following the conclusion of the public consultation, an interim report on the consultation has now been published that outlines the activities undertaken throughout the consultation period and provides a summary of the feedback received. All of the feedback will be carefully considered in finalising the Masterplan. Expansion proposals are much more embracing than simply adding flights and raising passenger numbers, yet it is hoped that

A

one will stimulate the other. Central to the £280m project developed over surrounding land are 5.5 million sq ft of space for businesses and the expansion of the airport's capacity to handle up to 250,000 tonnes of cargo per year. A new shopping, hotel and leisure complex would be created. The “aerotropolis” would provide a huge boost to regional tourism, accelerating the expansion and construction of major attractions close to the airport, such as

the Yorkshire Wildlife Park and a proposed PGA golf course of European significance. Estimates suggest the fully developed concept, known as Aero Centre Yorkshire, would deliver an economic impact of an additional £3.2bn to the region, bringing 73,000 jobs. Funding for the project would need to come from government and the private sector. Despite its seemingly over-ambitious aspirations, the project’s success could be down to the laying of just seven miles of railway track to serve a newly constructed

railway station at the terminal. Costing £170m, the station would link the airport to the East Coast Mainline bringing nine million potential passengers from as far apart as North London and Newcastle to within 90 minutes of the airport. The rail links would encourage airlines to open new routes and could unlock a huge boost in passenger numbers - from 1.2 million to 4.7 million. Airport owners, Peel Holdings, say a station could be opened within just five years and its cost would be far outweighed by the economic benefits. Airport chairman Robert Hough said: "It is straightforward to build and deliverable in five years. It is of national significance for aviation and the economy, particularly the North, and

The proposed new railway station at the airport

‘Although the proposals are still at a "conceptual stage" a fully-costed business plan has been drawn up and hopes are high that the complete dream will become reality by 2037.’

we want to see it realised as soon as possible. “If we are seriously talking about rebalancing the economy and the Northern Powerhouse, this sort of scheme should have full support. It is understandable, it is deliverable, and it is not that expensive.” The station proposal has received widespread support, recognised by Transport for the North, Network Rail and current train operators as well as business leaders and politicians. Sheffield City Region leaders believe the project would help transform the North of England and provide advanced manufacturing, logistics and aviation-led innovation opportunities. Nigel Brewster, vice-chairman of the Sheffield City Region Local Enterprise Partnership said: “Doncaster Sheffield Airport is central to the city region achieving its economic plan of 70,000 additional jobs, an additional £3.1billion GVA and 6,000 new businesses. We have always seen growth of the airport as being a key priority, but no one ‘actor’ can make this growth happen. We must come together with Peel, Doncaster Council, and Transport for the North – and the city region must also do its own part through investment in local transport infrastructure. “This is why we’re also currently consulting

FEATURE

Doncaster Sheffield: Flying high on our own transport strategy, which will enable interventions that make most impact to us within the city region. We’re clear that it will be those interventions that join up our places locally, which will ultimately make the large-scale investments work for the businesses and residents we serve. I would urge people to discover our draft transport strategy on the Sheffield City Region website and find out how you can contribute to the debate.” Sir Nigel Knowles, chairman of the Sheffield LEP, said: “With a single piece of infrastructure, one of the region’s biggest employment centres would be achieved, stimulating high-value business investment, new housing, tourism, and regional international and connectivity.” Jonathan Spruce, Strategy Director, Transport for the North, added: “Doncaster Sheffield Airport’s Vision would see it unlock significant passenger and cargo capacity and could create a major economic cluster, supporting the transformation of the North of England economy. We are currently consulting on our draft Strategic Transport Plan for the North which identifies DSA as a key economic centre and we recognise the need for enhanced rail access to DSA.” Once the final masterplan is complete, a consultation report will be published that will include a more detailed summary of the comments received alongside a response to these comments from Doncaster Sheffield Airport. The final Masterplan is expected to be published towards the end of 2018.

Doncaster Sheffield Airport started commercial flights in 2005. It currently serves more than 40 destinations, with a mix of charter, low cost scheduled and freight operations. Passengers

With destinations already across Europe, Doncaster Sheffield Airport will be the only one in Yorkshire with a transatlantic flight when Tui launches a long-haul route to Florida as part of a large-scale expansion into the Yorkshire market. The firm is increasing its capacity at Doncaster Sheffield Airport by 110,000 additional seats, with flights to begin to Orlando from next year, as well as new services to Egypt, Croatia, Greece and Turkey. Richard Sofer, commercial director with Tui said: “We are acting upon a strong growth plans for the airport and are really pleased to be building on the already solid relationship we have with the team. “Florida is a very popular destination so we expect to see good demand in the Doncaster Sheffield area. “We like to give people a good experience and that includes the airport which is renowned for giving good customer experience.” In addition, local businesses have welcomed Flybe’s new all year round route to Belfast which launches in June. Phil Johnson, Head of Procurement at DFS, whose head office is based in Doncaster, said: “I am pleased to see DSA continue to grow with new routes and the announcement of Belfast is great news for DFS. We regularly have staff flying to and from our operations in Belfast so this route will be of huge benefit to our company saving both time and money.” Martin McKervey, partner at international law firm CMS Cameron McKenna Nabarro Olswang LLP, and Sheffield City Region LEP board member and transport lead, said: “This is really welcome news, connections into major UK and European cities are vital to supporting our region’s growth agenda.” The Flybe Palma de Mallorca flights also returned this summer, running to 24 September. Cargo

Formerly RAF Finningley, the airport is blessed with one of the longest runways outside of the South East, which means it can handle some of the largest aircraft, including the Airbus A380 SuperJumbo. It has accommodated the freight carrier, the Antonov AN 225, the world’s largest cargo plane on occasions, to the delight of avid plane spotters. Expansion plans allow for site remodeling to give the airport the ability to handle up to 250,000 tonnes of cargo per year, supporting the UK’s international trade at a time when no airports across the UK are significantly expanding cargo capacity.

Chique announce their prom competition winners Once again, Chique Boutique had a huge number of entries for their annual prom competition. Congratulations to this year’s winners – Colette Heath, Megan Powell and Poppy Kate Winstanley, who are all pictured here in the dresses they wore to their school proms. All of the winners were photographed in their beautiful dresses and given a bouquet of flowers and a £25 voucher each. To enter, customers who had bought one of the Doncaster store’s dresses for their prom simply had to upload photos of themselves to Facebook or Instagram and Poppy Kate Winstanley in her navy dress tag Chique Boutique. This year proved the most difficult to judge yet, as there were over 300 promising entrants. As there were so many stunning photos, the judges, including owner Carolyn Poole, chose not one, but three winners. For inspiration for your next big occasion, visit www.chiqueboutique.co.uk.

IN BRIEF

Doncaster Ramblers are there and back again in Bamford Peter A Rowsell, member of Doncaster Ramblers talks about their recent walk from Bamford Station. “Having recce’d the route twice, 28 of us set off from opposite Bamford Station, along Mytham Bridge Lane turning right on Hope Road (A6187) then left along Shatton Lane and first right down Nidd Lane. The direction now west to reach Townfield Lane, where the OS map shows the path parallel to the road, then continues to a fork where we turned left heading at a gentle incline. “The route continued southwest across and everyone reached Bradwell in one piece. “We headed south on the B6049, turned left into Church Street, skipping up steps onto The Hills and along New Road and finally Edge Lane. The OS map shows two routes from here, strait up Robin Hoods Cross or left along Bradwell Edge, heading towards Brough Lane. “At a T junction we turned right along the lower edge of Abney Moor, continuing for 2/3rd of a mile until reaching a path crossing and turned left across Offerton Moor. On reaching Offerton Hall its right along the road for a couple of hundred yards then through a gate on the left, downhill towards Callow Farm, and into Callow Woods. “At Mount Pleasant Farm the route continues left towards the edge of woods and towards the B6001. “Having completed 2/3rd of the planned route, it was a much gentler and less complex march back to Bamford. Staying on the left side of the river, we were now on the Derwent Valley Heritage Way. “Thanks to everyone who took part, and Neil for back marking.”

Instaprint to the rescue after vandals target Bluebell Wood banner Rotherham-based online printer instantprint have reprinted and replaced Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice’s banner near Manvers Lake, Rotherham after it was defaced earlier this month. Bluebell Wood and instantprint staff were shocked to find the 12ft x 3ft banner, advertising the hospice’s upcoming fundraising events, had been vandalised beyond repair at the roundabout joining Manvers Way and Station Road. Fundraising is vital for the hospice, which supports children and young adults whose lives are just too short, and their families. Laura Mucklow, instantprint brand manager said: "When we learnt that Bluebell Wood’s banner had been defaced, we were deeply saddened. “The charity is local to our print facilities in Manvers and some of our staff are due to take part in their fundraising activities over the summer, so this is a cause close to our hearts. “Our first reaction upon seeing the vandalised banner was to consider how we could help. Since we already have the necessary equipment for high-quality, quick turnaround banner printing, we swiftly contacted Bluebell Wood to offer to replace their banner for free.” To find out how you can get involved in Bluebell Wood’s events, or to discover how you can help the 290 families they care for each year, please visit www.bluebellwood.org. Keep going for growth! THE FESTIVE SEASON IS ON THE HORIZON ALREADY… BUT THERE’S LOTS TO DO IN THE GARDEN AND WALKERS CAN HELP. hey’re already getting in the festive spirit at Walker’s Nurseries. From planning their Christmas Market, to building their Enchanted Forest themed grotto - there’s a lot to do. They are even setting up a brand new pop up Après Ski Bar, so keep an eye on their Facebook page for updates. But while the staff at Walkers are busy thinking about Christmas, you should be thinking about spring. There’s a lot to be done in the garden in September. It’s an ideal time to plant spring flowering bulbs - Walkers have a great selection in store. Make the most of the warm soil and plant trees and shrubs for the spring. Split up and replant any herbaceous perennials and plant some new perennials in your borders. Keep harvesting - celery, tomatoes, courgettes, onions, potatoes, apples and raspberries should all be ready. Pot up the more tender herbs like mint and store them in the kitchen for easy access. Consider storage of your crops, if you're

T

not going to use them up, freeze, dry or make some tasty pickles. We’re using the last of our homegrown tomatoes up in our salads and homemade soups. Why not create a homemade raspberry jam to pair with a freshly baked Walker’s scone? There’s still time to grow a little more before the cold weather comes. Plant a winter salad in your greenhouse. Rocket, spinach, winter lettuce and chicory all develop slowly in the lower temperatures. Walkers have a large selection of seeds in store and a wealth of gardening knowledge that they love to share. Continue with essential lawn maintenance to avoid water logging. If you have been

considering laying a new lawn, then don’t hold off for much longer, do it now to beat the frost. Walkers have lots of Christmas events planned this year, keep an eye on our website and Facebook page for all the details. TIPS FOR SELLERS

HOUSE FOR SALE TOP TIPS

WORDS: Isabelle Osborne

THINGS TO CONSIDER BEFORE JUMPING INTO THE PR0PERTY MARKET. BY ISABELLE OSBORNE.

Are you ready to make your move? utting your house up for sale can be as inspiring as choosing a house by opening up new opportunities. But there is a lot more to simply selling your property and receiving the money, and the costs of selling a house can be considerable. Having the knowledge and advice from professionals is vitally important. We’ve compiled a selection of top tips to make your journey efficient and stress-free.

P

124 Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk

1 SHOULD YOU SELL? Many people jump to the conclusion that selling is the right thing to do before assessing all their options. Here are a few different scenarios and things to consider: I need more space - why not create more space by building an extension, converting the attic or digging out the basement to save money? With prices rising rapidly, you may not be able to afford a place much bigger than the one you are already in. I need to downsize because I can’t afford to live here - smaller houses are not necessarily cheaper, and you may be better off renting your home out rather than selling. I am in negative equity so I need to sell - You might not be able to afford to sell your property. It is important to analyse the circumstances and review all your options before jumping into a decision- you might surprise yourself and realise selling is a bad option.

TIPS FOR SELLERS

2 Assessing your finances Once you have decided to sell your property, it is important to get ahead of the financial matters, as planning each step will prevent any hold ups. Make sure to notify your mortgage lender and legal advisor that you are planning to sell your home as you must find out how big your outstanding mortgage is. To get a rough idea of how much your house is worth, source the best local estate agents and approach three of them for a comparison of prices. Remember- these quotes are reliable estimations but are not predications of how much you will sell your property for. Following this, make sure to consider another mortgage or a new house should you decide to buy. You could get an idea from a mortgage lender on how much they would be willing to offer you.

3 Decide on your next home It’s easy to focus your mind on selling your current property and lose track of your plans for after the exchange in regards to where you will live. Forgetting about this important factor will put you in a weak position. Renting for a while during the selling process can add to the overall expense however reduces the time pressures of buying a new house, so renting could be a factor for consideration. Have a few potential properties in mind whilst the sale is ongoing to give yourself a plan.

4 Decide on a seller and a price There are several options in regards to selling your house and in-advance research is vital when making a decision. You can sell your home yourself, using a local estate agent, using an online estate agent, and must choose between a sole agent or multiple agents. Using an independent party such as an estate agent is a lengthy process- recommendation is an excellent way of deciding, so ask family, friends and neighbours. Compare local estate agents based on how quickly they sell properties, whether they achieve the asking price or if they’re miles off and how successful they are in general. Remember- you are paying this estate agent, so make sure you are getting value for you money. Or, if you’re patient, organised and have either experience or knowledge of doing so, selling your home yourself can save you money and may be more suited to your way of working. Pricing your house is a monstrous decision and when done incorrectly can result in major loss of time and money. Researching the local market in depth and requesting several valuations from estate agents will put you on the right path. It is important to know that buyers usually try to negotiate a discount, and the highest valuation may not always be the most accurate.

5 Preparing your home, accepting an offer and moving out The preparation for the buyers cannot be brushed over, so check these tips to see how you can make the most out of the preparation time to sell your home successfully and efficiently, as well as increasing it’s value. • Stand outside your home and see if it looks appealing- would you buy your house? • Fix anything that needs it and modernise the design if it’s recommended. • Decluttering, dusting, removing excess clutter, freshening the paint and keeping it clean will make your house feel more desirable to potential buyers. • Make the house a home if it’s not already - light candles, put photo frames up and remove bad odours to make your house more attractive.

After an offer has been made, you are still in control. If you are not happy with the offer that has been made, you can reject it automatically, wait to see if a better offer arises or ask the estate agent to try and negotiate it upwards. When you are willing to accept an offer, you must formally accept it and ask the estate agent to take the property off the market. Accepting an offer is not legally binding and you can still change your mind. Even though the house is sold, moving out of the house and into your next property is your final milestone. You can move out whenever suits you, even up until the day of completion (when the property changes ownership), although bear in mind that it is less stressful to move out beforehand. Make sure the property remains in the condition agreed at sale which the buyer and the estate agent can check between your moving out and completion. Stay organised, in control and under the right guidance during the process, and selling your house will be a rewarding and fulfilling experience. Good luck! Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk 125

THERE ARE SOME VERY SPECIAL ANNIVERSARIES TO BE CELEBRATED IN THIS MONTH’S ROUND-UP, WRITES JORDAN CUTFORTH.

A very special car Bentley is celebrating its 100th year in 2019, so how do you celebrate such an occasion? By making a very special edition of your most prestigious vehicle, that’s how. Called the Mulsanne W.O Edition by Mulliner, it’s a homage to founder W.O Bentley’s famous final 1930s design – the ‘8-litre’. What’s special about this is that each of the 100 cars built will hold a slice of crankshaft from W.O Bentley’s personal car. This particular Mulsanne is very special because of the range of features it beholds: Onyx paintwork; Mulliner illuminated cocktail cabinet; an interior colour split made from luxurious Fireglow Heritage and Fireglow hide with Beluga hide detailing and blind stitching. A great collectors piece for the all the 100 lucky customers.

Double decade The Audi TT is celebrating its 20th anniversary. The TT first made its debut to the world with its groundbreaking design back in 1998, being released onto the road three years later. To celebrate this double decade anniversary, the TT coupe and roadster have undergone enhancements to exterior design, power upgrades and an equipment uplift. The S-Line and Black edition models are further differentiated from their predecessors. The Audi virtual cockpit now has an additional sport display providing information on engine output, torque and G-forces. The 1.8-litre TFSI engine is being replaced by a 194hp 2.0-litre engine and the 227hp 2.0-litre engine has been boosted up to 242hp. Orders in the autumn. First deliveries late 2018.

UP FOR THE CUP Performance car enthusiasts will know of the Megane R.S; its driving dynamics are the best in the hot hatch business, and the Trophy raises the bar even further. We now have a new Megane R.S Trophy and it’s going to shake up the hot hatch segment. Based on the Cup chassis, the Trophy boasts a new 1.8-litre turbo engine producing 300hp and 310lb ft of torque. As with all Megane R.S models, power is delivered through the front wheels via either a six-speed manual or six-speed dualclutch gearbox. Like the ordinary Megane R.S, the Trophy comes with a rearwheel steering system which aids the agility of the car to make it much more nimble. Orders open this autumn with deliveries starting in the winter. 128 Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk

Stark contrast Say hello to the first ever Marvel-themed car, the Hyundai Kona Iron Man Edition. On the outside, it has a unique frontlighting signature, including a custom daytime running light form that closely resembles the facemask and eye shape of the Iron Man suit. Other Stark-like flourishes include an Iron Man mask motif on the roof, a unique V-shaped hood garnish, front bonnet Iron Man mask badging and custom 18-inch alloy wheels with Iron Man mask centre caps. The exterior colour is an exclusive Iron Man red with matte grey. Inside, Tony Stark’s signature adorns the instrument panel alongside a unique Iron Man shift lever knob, a special head up display and centre stack featuring Iron Man visual graphics, and a custom seat design.
