PREVIEW

First For Business

APRIL 2018

www.ffb-online.co.uk

PREVIEW ronically, it looks as if the oldest part of Sheffield, an area that has become known as a bit of an eyesore over the past few decades, may well hold the key to a bright new future for our muchmaligned city centre.

I

Castlegate, which has looked particularly sorry for itself particularly since the close of the old markets, is at the heart of a series of new initiatives that might just give a project that has been floundering, a much needed kick-start. This historically rich area, where Sheffield began as a settlement with a castle, bridge, market and houses pre-dating the Norman Conquest, seemed to have lost its role suffering a slow decline from the late 20th century to the present day. But now, with the Grade II listed Castle House building ready for a £3million revamp as it is turned into a centre for digital industries, Sheffield’s Old Town is being offered a new lease of life. Meanwhile a new cultural dimension could be added to the scenario with the findings of an archaeological dig on the site of the old castle set to determine whether the old remains could become the central attraction of a new public park. This month in First For Business, consultant editor Andy Waple looks at plans to transform Castlegate into a

major gateway for the city centre. He also looks at the scheme to complete the long-awaited new retail quarter, aka Heart of the City II. One thing Sheffield has always been good at is staging business events and this month we take a look at the many excellent host venues within the City Region as part of our Conference Guide. If you still need to be convinced about the importance of social media to your business, feature writer Rachel Martin’s update on the benefits of blogging, tweeting and all other social media tools might just make you sit up and think again. From delivering better customer service to increasing trust in your business or brand this is one tool every business, large or small, needs to be fully familiar with.

CHRIS WILSON, EDITOR

Once you’ve sorted out your working wardrobe it’s time to make an impression, and where better than the Festival of Debate, which started in 2015 and has grown into one of Sheffield’s biggest and most important platforms for big ideas. This year’s programme, which runs from 18 April to 29 June, includes over 75 events, with headliners including Greek economist Yanis Varoufakis and bestselling feminist Reni Eddo-Lodge, with festival strands on topics such as culture, self and identity, democracy and activism, fairness and equality, futures and science and environment. That’s just a taste of what’s in store in this issue of First For Business. Let us know what you think about the topics raised in this issue by tweeting us @ffbmagRMC.

Meanwhile when it comes to actually meeting your business contacts face to face, first impressions can still count for a lot, so you need to give some thought as to your appearance. But does dressing for business still mean wearing formal work attire – collar and tie for men, tailored suits for women? Hannah Sanders seeks out some expert advice from the professional personal stylists at John Lewis.

A TALE OF TWO CITIES

WHILE THE ATTENTION MAY HAVE TURNED TO THE RECENTLY REVEALED HEART OF THE CITY II PROJECT, WORK IS ALREADY UNDERWAY TO TRANSFORM THE AREA WHERE SHEFFIELD BEGAN – CASTLEGATE. ANDY WAPLE REPORTS.

ll eyes have been on the latest news concerning Sheffield’s new retail quarter following a key announcement last month, yet another significant step forward has been taken toward securing a new future for the city’s real historic heart.

A

Castlegate, for many years a rundown blight on the city centre, particularly since the closure of the markets, is looking set for a revival thanks to a series of initiatives. The area is where Sheffield began as a settlement, a place where a castle, 6 First For Business | www.ffb-online.co.uk

bridge, market and houses are known to have existed since at least since the Norman Conquest and probably before.

One key development in the redevelopment of the area was announced last month.

It was at the centre of local government, law and order, trade, transport and hospitality until late in the 20th century but has been in decline for many years due to the loss of a distinctive economic role.

Castle House, the grade II listed former Brightside and Carbrook Co-op on Angel Street, is to undergo a £3million revamp to turn it into business centre for digital industries, following the signing of a deal between the council and building owners U+I.

Yet it remains a main gateway into the city centre, and as visitors to most of Sheffield’s central hotels have to pass through it, its significance to the city’s image cannot be underestimated.

The government money will bring the empty building up to scratch, including rewiring, and the installation of heating and broadband.

AGENDA

The building, which dates back to 1962, is due to open in 2019, managed by Sheffield-based Kollider Projects. The hub will have an incubator for startups, workspace for small firms, areas focused on subjects such as gaming and investment advice, and a restaurant. Rent from occupants will raise revenue and Kollider hopes to sign a paying corporate partner. Mazher Iqbal, cabinet member for business, said he hoped it would be a catalyst for the city’s ‘Old Town’. He said: “It’s another step in the

regeneration of the area that links into the Urbo scheme at West Bar, Kelham Island, the Knowledge Gateway from the Old Post Office to the Showroom cinema and the Heart of the City. Wherever you look something is happening.” The announcement follows the launch late last year of an initiative to revamp the whole of Castlegate with £786,000 kickstart funding from the council’s Capital Growth Fund. It is aimed at starting a number of projects supporting new business initiatives reinvigorating its vacant or under-used buildings.

The council and the Castlegate Partnership, a group made up of Friends of the Castle and of the Old Town Hall, the two Universities, hoteliers, retailers and the Culture Consortium are behind the plans. Overall ambitions are to revamp the Old Town Hall on Waingate – more recently recognised as the High Court building – which is currently subject to a legal dispute between the council and the building’s owners over the need for urgent repairs. Across the road, an archaeological dig on the site of Sheffield’s medieval castle, led How Castlegate could look

by the University of Sheffield, is set to uncover what remains of one of England’s largest and most impressive fortifications. The findings will determine whether exposed remains could have a future as an attraction within a new public park.

Sheffield Castle is set to be uncovered

In addition, extensions to the Grey to Green corridor, linking the area with West Bar will take place, turning redundant ground along Exchange Street and Castlegate into meadows with space for events and reconnecting it to nearby Victoria Quays. >>> First For Business | www.ffb-online.co.uk 7

Key to the economic revival of the area will be the transformation of empty shops on Exchange Street and Waingate and the success of finding tenants from the arts and music sector. Character buildings ripe for renovation include the former Sheffield Stock Exchange, which latterly served as the Yorkshire Bank overlooking Fitzalan Square, and the former brick-built Hancock and Lant’s stable building next to Lady’s Bridge. Coun Mazher Iqbal added: “This package of projects demonstrates the importance we place on the future of Castlegate as a key part of the city centre economy and in the partnership which has come together to achieve it. “Castlegate is a major gateway into the city centre, but at the moment it doesn’t reflect the incredible regeneration happening elsewhere in the centre, such as The Moor and Sheffield Retail Quarter.”

8 First For Business | www.ffb-online.co.uk

“THIS PACKAGE OF PROJECTS DEMONSTRATES THE IMPORTANCE WE PLACE ON THE FUTURE OF CASTLEGATE AS A KEY PART OF THE CITY CENTRE ECONOMY AND IN THE PARTNERSHIP WHICH HAS COME TOGETHER TO ACHIEVE IT.”

AGENDA

NEW RETAIL QUARTER UPDATE: eanwhile, significant progress has been made with the long awaited and ill-fated New Retail Quarter, promised to regenerate the city centre, up the road from Castlegate.

M

Renamed as Heart of the City II, the latest proposals include hotels, a food hall, public spaces and accommodation as well as shops. The new proposals retain more historic buildings, following a public consultation, and perhaps most significantly, the anchor store John Lewis will be remodeled and remain on its current Barker’s Pool site rather than relocate as first mooted. Covering a triangular area stretching 1.5 million sq ft (139,000 sq m) from Pinstone Street to Devonshire Street and Fargate, work on the £470million project could be finished by 2024, according to optimistic noises from the town hall. Detail from the plans reveal the existing road layout as unchanged, the revamping of the old little mester’s Leah’s Yard off Cambridge Street and John Lewis remaining in situ.

The stylish frontages on Pinstone Street may be used for two new hotels. From a business perspective, the new scheme is expected to create around 500 construction jobs and should support between 5,500 and 7,000 jobs once built. It is also expected to stimulate further development within the city centre and attract additional inward investment into Sheffield. Planning applications for the next three blocks are due to be submitted in early summer 2018, and the council and its key delivery partner, Queensberry, are keen to ensure that the next phase of work begins before Phase One opens in 2019. Coun Mazher Iqbal said: “ We are in exciting talks with major retailers but this is only part of the picture – delivering leisure, entertainment and tourism offers that complement them is what Heart of the City II is all about. “The scheme has evolved to deliver not

just a retail quarter but a new city centre mixed-use, vibrant quarter right in the heart of our city. These plans will maintain the momentum we have achieved, create thousands of jobs and place Sheffield firmly in the premier league of UK cities.” The plans have been welcomed by Sheffield Chamber of Commerce, whose executive director, Richard Wright said: “We are pleased to see the council pushing forward with the next phases of this scheme. The revised plans really do target the high-end retail offer that the city badly needs whilst further developing the city centre as a destination for visitors. We are particularly excited by the modular design of some of the buildings which gives the flexibility to change layouts and meet changing future demands. This is a development for 10, 20 and 50 years ahead.” Phase one of the project is currently underway – an office for HSBC being built on the site of the demolished Grosvenor Hotel.

AN ARMY OF SUPPORTERS IS HELPING THE WESTON PARK CANCER CHARITY SUPPORT PEOPLE LIVING WITH CANCER…HERE’S WHAT THEY’RE DOING.

MAKING CARE LOCAL C

ancer rates are on the rise - there are more people in the UK living with the disease now than at any time in our history. But there is some good news - better treatment and improved understanding of the disease means that survival rates are also increasing. With that in mind, Weston Park Cancer Charity know how important it is to continue to fund high-quality cancer care services, as well as providing the vital support that patients and their carers need to manage their illness. Weston Park’s devoted supporters make this possible, raising money in a whole variety of ways, from bake-offs to bungee jumps, sponsored runs to skydives, and in 2017 the Cancer Charity received over £2.6m, which enabled them to the fund projects large and small that you can read about in this article. These are just a small selection of the initiatives Weston Park are supporting in an aim to create a better life for people living with and beyond cancer.

SUPPORT WHEN IT’S NEEDED MOST

HOW YOU CAN HELP Throughout the month of May, Weston Park Cancer Charity is inviting you to put the kettle on for some quali-tea time with friends, family or colleagues.

For many, the hardest thing about cancer is the enormous strain it places on emotions, relationships and finances. For this reason, Weston Park provide the majority of the funding for the Weston Park Cancer Support Centre which offers information, expert advice and direct support for patients and their families. Find out more at: www.cancersupportcentre.co.uk

And the icing on the cake - every penny you raise will help continue to fund two Independent Living Coordinators who can support over 350 cancer patients to help address some of the difficulties doctors and nurses alone can’t treat.

COMPLEMENTARY THERAPIES The Cancer Charity is funding an exciting new initiative to provide complementary therapy services for cancer patients at Chesterfield Hospital, widening access to therapies such as reflexology, acupuncture, massage and hypnotherapy, which reduce stress, alleviate pain and improve sleep.

EXERCISE Exercise can play a particularly important role in the rehabilitation process and the Cancer Charity has recently committed to fund a specialist programme in partnership with Sheffield Hallam University and Barnsley Premier Leisure, providing exercise opportunities for patients in Barnsley, helping them to live well and stay well for longer.

Don’t stew! Sign up at www.westonpark.org.uk or call the charity team on 0114 226 5370. It really is a piece of cake, but don’t just take our word for it. Speaking about their continuous support, Janet Cooke and her husband Paul said: “There are few things in life as satisfying as a good cup of tea and hosting your own, or helping someone to host a tea party can be a great way of not only raising vital funds, but getting together with your nearest and dearest to appreciate the finer things in life – like cake. “The fundraising team have always been supportive and it’s heartening to see the real difference every donation makes.”

SUPPORTING OLDER PEOPLE TO LIVE WELL WITH CANCER Working with Age UK Sheffield, the Cancer Charity funds two Independent Living Coordinators, which is the Gold Standard service, for supporting older people to live independent and fulfilling lives. This ground-breaking project delivers many benefits for older people living with cancer including: improving financial circumstances and enabling timely discharge from hospital to a safe home environment.

HEAD IN THE CLOUD WHY SOCIAL MEDIA SHOULD BE YOUR BUSINESS’ TOP PRIORITY IN 2018. BY RACHEL MARTIN. ccording to the Office of National Statistics (ONS), only 60 per cent of businesses are using social media. And those who use professional blogs provide an even bleaker number at a mere 42 per cent, despite the myriad of benefits this can bring, including aiding SEO efforts and driving traffic.

A

Although small businesses would benefit the most from blogging, statistics revealed that only 38.9 per cent were doing so, compared to 80.4 per cent of companies with over 1,000 employees. And in Britain, research has revealed that one in five businesses will not be investing in social media in 2018. For small businesses, this statistic is even lower, standing at 57.6 per cent – compare this to enterprises with more

12 First For Business | www.ffb-online.co.uk

than 1,000 employees, where 90.3 per cent use social media. And even fewer small businesses link or reference their social media pages on their website, at only 49.5 per cent. Yet, according to the ONS report, businesses across various sectors cited that they mainly use social media to develop the business image or to market products (23.2 per cent stated this), with the second most common reason being to obtain or respond to customers’ opinions, reviews, and questions. These are two vital reasons to be present on social networks, especially when you consider that 77 per cent of Twitter users stated that they feel more positive about a brand when their tweet has been replied to.

SOCIAL MEDIA

But if you still aren’t convinced, here are SIX compelling reasons to utilise your businesses social media channels: 1. Deliver better customer service

3. Increase trust in your business or brand

Twitter is often a first port of call for many customers who have pre-sales or support related questions. Leaving customer questions to go unanswered makes a business look unprofessional, so it’s crucial that you are visible on the social networks that your customers are using, and that you are regularly monitoring all of your channels for brand mentions and customer questions.

With so many alternatives to choose from, customers are often overwhelmed and want an easy way to authenticate a business that they are dealing with for the first time. Seeing that you are active on social media helps to fill potential customers with trust – it signals that you care about your customers and should anything go wrong, they can easily contact you.

2. Drive brand building and differentiation

4. Obtain real customer insights

Social media makes it easy to improve brand awareness and build your brand’s identity. You can effectively establish your brand’s personality and give your business a human voice that people can relate to. Connecting on an emotional level or showing some personality are both effective ways of helping your brand stand out from your competitors.

Customer insights can drive the development of social media campaigns and shape strategic decisions, helping you to make your website content and product or service offerings more attractive and relevant to your customers. Social media makes it quick and easy for businesses to obtain feedback from customers, which will give

you a clearer idea of brand sentiment and help you identify common pain points you can address.

5. Keep customers engaged Social media is a great way of keeping your business or brand in the mind of your customers. This means you can actively influence purchasing decisions and helps to foster customer loyalty and encourage repeat purchases.

6. Drive website traffic Social media as an SEO ranking signal is increasing in importance. Being talked about and mentioned on social media is a positive signal that shows you are popular and have content worth sharing and talking about. This in turn drives Google to regard your website as being more authoritative, which is one of the many signals that helps your website rank better in organic SEO. >>> First For Business | www.ffb-online.co.uk 13

Social media rules to turbo charge your career With an estimated new social media user every 15 seconds, there has never been a better time to turn your social media strategy up a notch. But have you given your accounts a good spring clean? We live in a digital age where our lives are showcased through our social media accounts and, more than ever, employers are looking on candidate’s Linkedin, Facebook and Twitter accounts to assess a job seeker’s employability before meeting them. Of course the old advice was to lock all profiles down to private, but approached with caution, social media is a great opportunity for candidates to showcase some of the more unique things about themselves, as well as their passion for their chosen industry. Toxic social media profiles, ill-judged online comments and long forgotten shared photos could be damaging your career prospects, and as we know our online lives get just as cluttered as our real ones, we’ve rounded up seven tips to help job seekers and ambitious executives detox their social media.

DO

DON’T

Create an online presence Whether you’re looking for a new job or positioning yourself for career growth, it’s important to have an online presence where you can showcase your skills and experience. Your online profiles will also help you connect with contacts who can help you in your job search or assist in moving you up the career ladder.

Voice controversial opinions While it is important to get involved with discussions online and flex your ideological muscles, nobody wants to employ an overly-opinionated loudmouth. So steer away from controversial issues if you want to keep the peace.

Check your privacy setting Whilst many of us are guilty of thinking that our drunken snaps are safely hidden away from the prying eyes of current or future employers, did you know that anybody can see your tagged photos if the person that uploaded them has made the album public? So, make sure you have your privacy settings locked down. Facebook privacy settings have also been known to change when posted from a mobile device, so however secure you think your private settings are, make sure you double check. Google your name and check what’s online There’s tonnes of online information that can tell employers a lot about you and it’s quite easy for employers to find information you may have preferred to keep private – much of it can be found by simply Googling your name. Pre-empt any disasters by Googling your own name and rectifying anything that may raise alarm bells to current or potential employers.

14 First For Business | www.ffb-online.co.uk

Tweet about bad work behaviour Turned up late for the third time this week and got away with it? Took an extra 20 minutes on top of your lunch break? Good for you, but don’t brag to your friends about it over Twitter – you’re practically asking for your employer to find it. Bad mouth current/previous employers Many people are tempted to voice their work-related frustrations on social media, and vent about how much their co-workers or boss have angered or upset them. But keep in mind that current and prospective employers may be looking out for this type of information, so refrain from making these comments at all costs. Mock your customers Like complaining about your boss, mocking or complaining about your customers or clients can have equally detrimental effects. Complaining about customers only shows your company and your work ethic in a bad light. Most employers won’t stand for that, so avoid posting these types of complaints online and instead voice your concerns to a manager or colleague.

What sets them apart is that their main focus is providing entertainment through board games both old and new. When we say board games, they don’t stock a pile of tatty boxes in the corner with half the pieces missing, but offer a colourful wall of choices including everything from the newest designer titles, to the old familiar classics. And, their friendly, knowledgeable staff are on hand to help you pick the right game and master the rules. What’s more, The Treehouse is changing the ‘boring’ stereotypes of corporate

functions by offering a space where colleagues’ imaginations can run wild. They have lots of competitive, team-based and co-operative games including Colour Brain and Pandemic meaning it’s the perfect environment for client networking, team building and a range of corporate functions. The Treehouse have two meeting rooms available from Tuesday to Friday from 10.30am to 6pm and can cater for anywhere up to 50 to 60 people with prices starting from £12.50 per person. The packages can be tailor-made to suit your requirements but will include a flip chart, stationery, two rounds of tea and coffee along with cake at times of your choosing, as well as use of the games library. They also offer a catering service which includes a selection of their locally-sourced produce, with the majority being handmade on site. And they can provide

for all dietary requirements, offering vegan and gluten-free alternatives where possible. And, if you and your staff are wanting to continue into the evening, worry not as they have a fully stocked bar. STYLE THAT SUITS HOW TO BE BUSINESS-LIKE AND ON-TREND AT THE SAME TIME. BY HANNAH SANDERS. ressing for business used to be so easy, especially for the male of the species. Fashions may have changed with the seasons but when it came to a working wardrobe, the suit and tie pretty much came as standard.

impress? What’s the dress code in the modern workplace?

These days, it’s not so simple. In many working environments, particularly newer industries such as digital, power dressing has pretty much gone by the board. The MD of that super successful company with profits running into the high millions can look just like the rest of the workforce - jeans and casual shirt.

The arrival of spring presents a fantastic opportunity to update your business attire for both men and women with brighter colours, lighter fabrics, patterned trousers and statement accessories.

D

Does this make life easier or just leave us with one more thing to stress about in the working week? Any old pair of jeans or designer label? And in more traditional lines of work does ‘power dressing’ still

30 First For Business | www.ffb-online.co.uk

We set out in search of the latest trends and picked up some expert advice from Peter and Kim, the fashion experts at John Lewis, Sheffield, along the way.

For men, the warmer months are great chance to experiment with checked trousers, whether they are simply monochrome or have an added splash of colour, they work well with a light cotton shirt paired with a soft shoulder blazer making you stand out from the regular office crowd. And, if you aren’t a fan of

VIBE’s digital reporter Ashley Birch

patterned trousers, why not opt for a skinny or a relaxed fit in blues, browns or nudes. Business isn’t all about the blazer, so why not try pairing your button-up shirt and tie with a cardigan? An unbuttoned oversized, thick cardigan is a good option but if you prefer to be buttoned up, try a thin cardigan with low-placed buttons to showcase your tie. Another option would be to pair your shirt with a coloured waistcoat to dress up your work attire. Although ties are a crucial piece of formalwear, they are not everyone’s favourite item. Why not consider a neckerchief, as they offer a more relaxed feel, and do remember that not all offices require you to wear a full suit. If you’re office does require a tie try wearing

FASHION

lighter shades of blue, purple, pink and red. However, there is always going to be an occasion when traditional formal wear is needed, so don’t underestimate the power of a good suit. Make sure you have at least one tailored outfit in your wardrobe for any corporate events. “Find your ‘wow’ colour for the season - just because you are wearing a suit doesn’t mean you can’t introduce individuality and personal style. A tailored suit does convey confidence and shows that you are a structured, organised and put together person, which is ideal in a professional environment, but there is nothing wrong with a statement tie, neckerchief or scarf ” said Peter, personal stylist at John Lewis, Sheffield. For women, while a shorter sleeve is more appropriate for the warmer weather, it is important to steer clear of spaghetti straps and bandeau tops, instead opting for a light and loose shirt making sure it is not a see-through material. Now that spring has sprung, it means trousers can be swapped for light, patterned or floral skirts and dresses, which are great paired with a pastel shirt or cardigan. However, be mindful of hemline length and always have a pair low denier tights on hand for more formal meetings. If trousers are more your style opt for a looser fit such as cut-offs or culottes. Make sure you always have a jacket on hand thanks to the unpredictable English weather, but rather than a full coat try a tailored duster jacket or long-line blazer. And, take this as an opportunity to inject some colour and pattern into your work wear. For both men and women, your shoe choice is crucial, as not only do your feet need to be comfy all day but they need to look office appropriate. For the warmer months, opt for brogues and formal footwear in shades of brown or nudes, and as tempting as it may be steer clear of flip flops and open-toes.

‘Find your ‘wow’ colour for the season - just because you are wearing a suit doesn’t mean you can’t introduce individuality and personal style.’ Here are Peter and Kim’s top tips for men and women MEN - Introduce a coloured or patterned scarf to emphasise muted tones - Ditch the blue shirts and go lighter and brighter - Don’t be afraid to incorporate a tailored waistcoat, and maybe even underlay a relaxed shirt or tee - Remember the importance of a well-fitted shirt - Shoes don’t always have to be black or brown - experiment with colour WOMEN - Utilise pastel colours with a twin trouser suit, but add a t-shirt underneath - Mix smart and casual where possible - Add a statement bag in a lime or electric blue - If opting for a lower cut pair with a patterned or bright scarf - Add a bright and light trench coat to add a pop of colour to a formal outfit

MAKE-UP TO MAKE YOU BOARDROOM BEAUTIFUL It’s not all about what you wear, make-up is big part of your attire. Here are some tips and tricks from White Rose Beauty College’s, Rebecca Sewell on how to tailor your make-up for the boardroom. You are smart, fabulous and savvy so don’t let overdone makeup distract your employer from the professionally perfect employee that you are. Whatever your style may be, your goal in the office is to enhance your features, not overshadow them. Follow these tips and you will not go far wrong in looking your absolute best all the way to the top.

LET THE EXPERTS HELP YOU ADD SOME COLOUR TO YOUR LIFE. John Lewis, Sheffield, offer an intimate personal styling and colour analysis service, in which fashion experts help you find the perfect fashion pieces to make the most of your individual style. They give your wardrobe a seasonal update, whilst creating your own colour profile. First for Business writers Hannah Sanders and Rachel Martin went along to try it out “The personal styling and colour analysis service really is John Lewis’s best kept secret, and what makes it even better is it’s free. As personal stylists, we never want to take a colour away from anyone but simply bring out each person’s individual style.”

1 Flawless skin – for the win Office lighting can be very unforgiving so ensure your skin looks at its glowing best at all times and opt for a BB/CC cream instead of a foundation. Foundations tend to dry out throughout the day and can end up looking ‘cakey.’ A BB or CC cream however is usually quite moisturising and hydrating and will keep your healthy glow from nine to five and beyond. 2 Save the dramatic liner for weekend cocktails with the girls Instead of lining your eyes with a strong and thick black liquid or gel liner, keep everything softer by using a brown shade in a pencil or eye shadow form. Avoid using a dark colour on the waterline too. Go for a cream or peach colour to really open your eyes and keep that fresh look all day.

Peter, personal stylist “We offer a full head-to-toe experience – it goes beyond the clothes, we can even help you match the perfect eyeshadow or lipstick shade. We aren’t about the hard sell, but want to ensure each customer leaves with clothes they truly love and will wear. We never want to steer you away from a pop of colour but want to ensure you find the tone for you – the perfect shade can change everything.”

3 Pass on the lip gloss Gloss can be a little too much for a day in the office. Instead choose a nice hydrating, long lasting lipstick that will give you the perfect pout until you clock out. Don’t be afraid of bold colours that demonstrate confidence but make sure you stick to neutrals elsewhere.

Kim, personal stylist “Kim and Peter are such lovely and natural people - they went through my outfit giving me great advice that felt so comfortable, and they also advised me on the best colours for me. I am not a new woman – and I am not sure I will ever be a lime green person – but I did learn a trick or two. I’ve started actually thinking about colour. Muted undertones do look better on me than anything darker, which I had never considered before. And I do look very nice in teal and red.”

4 Go easy on the spider lashes Every girl loves mascara but when applied incorrectly it can look terrible.Take your time coating your lashes well and rolling the wand from base to tip as this will separate your lashes as it lengthens.

Hannah Sanders

5 Be prepared for an emergency The boss could call an impromptu client meeting at any time. So stash a couple of versatile multi functioning products in your desk drawer. Something that doubles up as a blusher and lip stain would be ideal for a quick touch up. Matte bronzers can also be used as a nice neutral shadow along the crease of your eye to emphasise your eye shape.

If you would like to find the perfect pieces that make the most of your individual style visit www.johnlewis/personalstyling.co.uk to book in for your free colour and style analysis.

So, there you go ladies there is your essential guide to looking your absolute best in the office from your morning bagel to your after-work tipple.

Rachel Martin “It was a really inspiring afternoon having a wardrobe review with Kim and Peter and it was great to find out that I have subconsciously been picking the right colours for my skin tone. They also encouraged me to opt for more adventurous shades within my tonal range.”

BRIGHT YOUNG THINGS IF YOU HAVEN’T ENTERED OUR YOUNG CHEF OF THE YEAR COMPETITION YET, NOW IS THE TIME TO ACT... here’s still time for the region’s best young chefs to be entered in our competition to find the culinary stars of tomorrow.

T

Our sister magazine Westside and My Fathers Heart are joining forces to stage a fantastic competition to find the Young Chef of the Year 2018. We’re asking head chefs and restaurateurs to tell us about any bright sparks working in their kitchens, who they think are shaping up to be outstanding chefs of the future. Entries have already started coming in and there’s still time but hurry... the closing date is Monday 23 April. Our competition is open to anyone working in restaurants in the Sheffield and North Derbyshire region, and all entries must be under the age of 25 on 1 June 2018. Four finalists will be invited to join us for a MasterChef-style cooking competition in the state-of-the-art kitchens at My Fathers Heart on Saturday 12 May. That’s their opportunity to create their signature main course, which will be judged by a panel of culinary experts led by Mick Burke, who spent 37 years teaching thousands of students the fine art of cooking in his role as senior chef lecturer at Sheffield College.

And, as an extra incentive, all four finalists will also be invited to take part in the 2019 Sheffield Food Festival’s popular ‘Ready, Steady, Cook’ competition. My Fathers Heart, designers and makers of the region’s finest bespoke, handmade kitchens, bedrooms and furniture, regularly host glamorous events in their award-winning showroom. It proved to be the perfect venue for last year’s Young Chef of the Year event. The Westside/My Fathers Heart Young Chef of the Year competition is a great opportunity to shine a light on the next generation of kitchen superstars. We’re looking forward to seeing what the best young talent out there has to offer, and giving all four finalists, a boost by placing them in the spotlight. The results will be announced at the Westside Restaurant Awards on Monday 5 June 2018 (see page 87 for more details). So now it’s down to the head chefs and restaurateurs across the region to nominate their young kitchen stars for this prestigious event. If you employ a bright young chef with the talent and drive to reach the top, let us know.

STOP, LOOK, LISTEN AND TAKE PART WITH OVER 75 EVENTS TACKLING TOPICS SUCH AS CULTURE, DEMOCRACY, EQUALITY AND ENVIRONMENT, THIS YEAR’S FESTIVAL OF DEBATE LOOKS SET TO BE THE BEST YET. ow in its fourth year, The Festival of Debate is set to present its biggest programme yet. The festival is one of the largest political events in the UK, run by Opus Independents with support from numerous partners including Museums Sheffield, Sheffield Hallam University and the University of Sheffield.

N

The Festival of Debate started in 2015 ahead of the general election to encourage engagement with key issues facing the UK, and due to its success became an annual fixture. This year’s festival includes over 75 events, with headliners including Greek economist Yanis Varoufakis and bestselling writer and feminist Reni Eddo-Lodge, with festival strands on topics such as culture, self and identity, democracy and activism, fairness and equality, futures and science and environment. Culture, self and identity has been sponsored by SIV Tickets and will explore how we live, who we are and why it matters. The events will focus on a range of thought-provoking topics including identity politics, sexual harassment and feminism and food aiming to encourage both inward and outward reflection. Democracy and activism is sponsored by Abbeydale Brewery and focuses on making everyone’s voices heard, whilst the fairness and equality strand sponsored by Making Sheffield Fairer Campaign is about forging a path to success. 36 First For Business | www.ffb-online.co.uk

Sponsored by Barnsley Digital Media Centre, futures gets people looking ahead and thinking about the kind of world we’d like to live in, exploring topics including population control, the future of the European Union and new approaches to reducing the harm caused by drugs. Science and environment, sponsored by Regather, is about investigating new technology and the plant. Festival founder James Lock said: “Our chance for a better world comes from facing issues head on, learning new points of view, making the effort to listen and being empathetic with one another. We believe this is everyone’s responsibility and hope that this year’s festival programme goes some way to furthering that ideal.” There’s something for everyone this year, from ex-Labour and Green Party leaders Ed Miliband and Natalie Bennett, to Great British Bake Off star Ruby Tandoh, through to a musical about the embattled American president called Trump! The Musical!, along with a closing party marking 100 years of women’s suffrage with activist Helen Pankhurst and poet Hollie McNish. As well as many household names and big institutions, the Festival is also run in collaboration with a whole range of community and grassroots organisations across the city. Campaign groups such as Sheffield Save Our NHS are running an event offering local people a chance to share their thoughts, memories, hopes and fears for

our national health system. Whilst The Orgreave Truth and Justice Campaign are holding a talk about why the Miners’ Strike still matters today, which is aimed at younger people who might not have experience of the original events. While these events are aimed at smaller audiences, they are absolutely key to the Festival organisers, who said: “One of the main reasons we started the Festival was to give a wider platform to the smaller campaign groups in Sheffield, which are often run by volunteers but do incredibly important work.” As Sheffield prepares for this year’s festival, Sarah Sharp, lead artistic programmer at Theatre Deli said: “We look forward to Festival of Debate each year because we think it is a highly accessible, engaging and thoughtprovoking series of events. We’re looking forward to working with the team again and seeing all of the fantastic offerings this year’s Festival holds.”

Festival of Debate opens on 18 April and runs until 29 June. For the full Festival lineup and ticket information, please see: www.festivalofdebate.com

EXCITEMENT ON THE MENU HANNAH SANDERS DISCOVERS THAT DINNER AT OWLERTON STADIUM COMES WITH A SIDE ORDER OF ADRENALINE AS THE DOGS RACE TO THE LINE.

he lights were lowered and all eyes were on the track as the commentator announced: ‘the hare is on the move. ‘ We cheered as Slaneyside Ryder set the pace, our excitement building with every second, but disappointment kicked in when he didn’t take first place.

T

Welcome to dining out, Owlerton-style. With a rhubarb and ginger gin (£6) and corona (£3.80) in hand along with a panoramic view of the arena, my partner and I were looking forward to a night at the dogs. We ordered from the popular restaurant package (£20) which is a three-course dinner, race card, tote runner and waiting service - the perfect choice if you want a night out with a difference. There is a variety-filled menu which undergoes monthly changes – great if you like to revisit favourite restaurants without having the same thing twice and the standards when it comes to quality of food and attentive service are reassuringly excellent. To start my partner had the Yorkshire

puddings, served with an apple and sage gravy, which were crisp on the outside yet delightfully fluffy inside. I chose the chicken liver pate with toasted raisin and walnut bread served with a plum and apple chutney. The fresh bread was still warm and when paired with the sweet chutney and smooth pate the dish was almost celestial. The break between courses was the perfect opportunity to place another bet, determined to end our losing streak, we placed our hopes on Axel Eight, keeping our fingers crossed as he picked up speed, but again he didn’t quite hit the mark, only taking second place. For mains I opted for the roasted chicken breast with lemon and thyme, smoked pancetta and drizzled with a pea and onion jus. The chicken was beautifully tender with a crisp skin, which provided the perfect contrast to the sweet and sharp jus. My partner’s chargrilled sirloin steak was cooked to medium-well perfection, but the star of the night was the stilton and peppercorn sauce which was rich and full of flavour. Both mains were served

with a generous helping of fresh vegetables, and our sides of home cut chucky chips (£2.50) and garlic ciabatta (£2.50) were moreish. Following our feast, I opted for the apple and blackberry crumble which was served with indulgent vanilla custard. My partner chose the delectable white chocolate and raspberry crème brulee the charred top providing a subtle crunch, offsetting the sharp kick of the accompanying raspberries. On this visit to Owlerton, the odds were unfortunately in the bookies’ favour as our losing streak continued throughout our meal - despite this, we thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience. So, if you’re looking for a place to relax and enjoy a piece of the action there’s no better place than in Owlerton’s Panorama Restaurant. THE WAIT IS OVER The Ferrari that everybody has been waiting for: say ‘ciao’ to the Ferrari 488 Pista. Why is this the car people have been waiting for? Simple – how it looks and how it drives. The previous generations to this car, the 360 Challenge Stradale, 430 Scuderia and 458 Speciale, were all absolutely fantastic to drive and this new 488 Pista, should be the most ballistic model variant yet. Compared to the 488 GTB, the new model weighs an impressive 90kg less (1280kg dry). Combine this with a horsepower figure of 710hp, increased torque and 20 per cent more downforce, and you’ll have a car which it as comfortable tearing up the Silverstone F1 circuit as it is trundling through Sheffield city centre.

IT’S ALL ABOUT BOLD STATEMENTS AS MAJOR MANUFACTURERS UNVEIL THEIR LATEST OFFERINGS, WRITES JORDAN CUTFORTH. BREAKING THE MOULD Say hello to the all-new Peugeot 508. Breaking the mould of the traditional four-door saloon silhouette, the Peugeot 508 combines a bold new low coupe design with the enhanced practicality of five doors. It showcases a beautifully integrated rear hatch, offering a significantly larger aperture to the generous 487-litre boot.

VOLVO PRESSES THE ELECTRIC SWITCH The Volvo V60 is an iconic car for the Swedish car-maker – the “central point of the Volvo brand” according to the Senior Vice President of Design at Volvo Cars.

The 508 follows the ethos of the new crop of Peugeot vehicles by incorporating their innovative PEUGEOT iCockpit design. It incorporates a large ten-inch capacitive touchscreen angled towards the driver and a 12.3-inch head-up digital instrument panel. Available with a range of six highly efficient petrol and diesel engine / transmission combinations, covering 130 to 225hp, it will be available in the summer.

As Volvo aims to electrify all new cars from 2019, the V60 comes with two plug-in hybrid powertrain options: the new T6 Twin Engine AWD petrol plug-in hybrid that generates a combined 340hp, or the T8 Twin Engine AWD petrol plug-in hybrid that delivers 390hp. As with all Volvo cars, the interior is not only very stylish, but extremely luxurious too. And with all the safety systems on board, the V60 is one of the safest cars on the road. UK prices for the V60 will start at £31,810.

FORD’S LIVING LIFE ON THE EDGE The new Ford Edge SUV makes its European debut in sporty ST-Line form, offering innovative driver assistance technology, new powertrains, and premium comfort specification. It makes a statement with enhanced front and rear styling, a wide mesh grille, a colour-coded body including deep side skirts, and standard 20-inch aluminium wheels. Released with the Edge is Ford’s all-new 2.0-litre 235hp EcoBlue bi-turbo diesel engine. It’ll be combined with Ford’s Intelligent All Wheel Drive system and a new eight-speed automatic transmission. Other engines available include a 187 hp version of the same engine and a 148hp variant.

GREEN DREAM

HANNAH SANDERS MEETS A FAMILY REALISING THEIR AMBITION TO BUILD THE MOST ECO-FRIENDLY HOME IN SHEFFIELD. t’s the greenest house in Sheffield... and until now it has probably been one of the city’s best-kept secrets.

I

Mention Pinegrove Country Club to most people and, if they remember it at all, they will recall a sports and social club in Stannington that had a few very successful years back in the 1980s and ‘90s.

consultant at the Northern General. Alongside Meg’s mother Dorothy they have combined to create a one-of-a-kind house with vision, passion and an eye for detail that truly makes it stand alone.

It faded from public consciousness after going out of business, falling into disrepair and being subject to a series of arson attacks.

“We wanted to create a home that was self-sustaining and energy-efficient, focusing on future-proofing. We are quite passionate about our impact on the environment. We wanted somewhere we could live our lives as green as possible,” said Meg.

But this mouldering venue was the unlikely site chosen by local businessman Mike Haver to create a stunning, selfcontained, eco-friendly family home.

“The wonderful thing about Sheffield is that you have the fingers of green that feed into the city, which made it a great place for the build.”

Mike runs a building maintenance company and his wife Meg is a

including Grenoside Primary School, The Old Chapel at Middlewood Hospital, Claremont House, Loxley and Brantwood School, Nether Edge but after much deliberation, feasibility studies and costing, finally settled on Pinegrove. “We hadn’t even considered Pinegrove until a chance drive past after visiting the Robin Hood pub in Little Matlock. The site caught our eye, so of course we went to investigate, and ideas just starting pouring out of us. But then the difficult task came of trying to find out who owned it,” said Mike. “There was no for ‘sale sign’, just a derelict building. The company listed as owning it was no longer trading and the solicitors had been taken over by a larger firm, meaning we had our work cut out

for us. It was our architect who suggested contacting the bank and, after bouncing from one person to the next, eventually a commercial land agent called us in regard to purchasing the site.” The area itself is a brownfield site in the greenbelt, consisting of 13 acres, eight of which is woodland along with 700m of riverbank along the river Loxley. “Before we demolished the site, we needed to safely remove a family of pipistrelle bats who had been roosting underneath the roof. “We had to get a license for doing this from Natural England, which we were granted, and then an ecologist came to catch the three bats. Once the house was built we had to put up bat boxes just in case, but they haven’t returned so have obviously found somewhere far nicer to roost.” Other problems were on a significantly larger scale and proved to be a test of both patience and ingenuity. The whole site consists of inert landfill, meaning the house had to be built on piles. In December 2012, when demolition

began, the Havers family wanted to recycle as much of the old building as possible, so the material was later used to form a base layer.

was built by Oakworth in Handsworth, the stone is from Stanton Moor in Derbyshire and our floor is limestone sourced from the Peak District,” said Meg.

“After the foundations had been built, we then fitted two rainwater tanks underground which can store 20,000 litres of rainwater and be used for garden irrigation, flushing toilets and even the washing machine,” said Mike.

By Christmas 2013, the house was watertight which meant that 6KW solar panels could be fitted to generate electricity. They also had a log boiler installed, which uses wood grown on the site to provide the domestic hot water and underfloor heating.

The house is built on Passivhaus prinicples which means it meets a very high level of energy efficiency, minimising its carbon footprint and resulting in an ultra-low energy building. To meet this standard, it was important for them to make the house airtight and they achieved this by using a combination of Warmcell sustainable insulation, Pavatex woodfibre board and rigid PIR foam board. Mike taped all the joints so no air could escape, and fitted the house with a mechanical ventilation and heat recovery system to minimise smells and stale air without losing heat. “Throughout the build we wanted to utilise local products, so the timber frame

“Throughout the build, there were so many challenges we faced but for me, one of the hardest things was being so physically and mentally involved 24/7. The number of decisions involved is difficult, but fortunately for us we had a team of three to share the workload. It was great to see everything developing but it was hard living with all the elements that weren’t quite finished,” said Meg. “The fact that it was non-stop was what made it so challenging. Once you had finished one section, you were back on the laptop, planning and ordering materials for the next phase,” added Mike. >>>

But all the hard graft was worth it when the couple were able to finally move into a home that, as well as being the greenest in Sheffield, is also stunningly beautiful and truly unlike any other house in the city. The house has an open-plan kitchen, dining room and living room along with five bedrooms, a workshop, a pottery studio, a separate apartment, four bathrooms, two lounge areas and a reading corner overlooking the Loxley valley. They also have bees, vegetable gardens and an expansive greenhouse. The interior is just as breath-taking as the exterior, with pastel shades carefully chosen to coincide with the surrounding nature, and the unique pieces of furniture perfectly combining to create a contemporary and rustic feel. But of course, with a house on this scale the job is never totally finished. The

Haver family has just been granted planning permission for a hydro-electric scheme on the near-by weir and they are hoping to start building it in 2019. This will take water from the top of the weir, run it through an Archimedes screw generator and create enough electricity to run the household. “If you came back in five to ten years we would hope that the area outside the walls would be more established as a renewable coppice woodland and we would have a traditional hedge along the roadside. We also would hope to have chickens and be much more selfsufficient when it comes to feeding ourselves. I would hope we would be living as eco-friendly as possible,” said Mike. “When we were building, Kevin McCloud’s Grand Designs book was a lifeline. He explained that there are three

elements to a build – the finish, cost and deadline and he doesn’t think you can deliver the same standard on all three. “You have to compromise and for us, although we spent more than we envisioned, the timescale was what we needed to be flexible on. We thought it would take three to five years and here we are six years down the line and still going,” adds Meg. “All of us are proud of the finishes we’ve achieved, being innovative and getting the features that we wanted. “We’ve achieved more than we could’ve ever imagined, and having such a large household with everything working proves that we have designed and built it correctly- it is a real sense of achievement, and it added to our enjoyment when we were able to host a large gathering of family this Christmas.”

2018 STARTS IN STYLE FOR WHITE DESIGN South Yorkshire architects, White Design have started 2018 in style with the completion of two major leisure developments worth nearly £8million. The Sheffield-based practice has been working with Wildgoose Construction as part of the design and build team for Marston’s Inns and Taverns since 2010. This month saw the completion of the latest development, the £3million Station Pilot pub restaurant in Crewe, which can cater for up to 150 diners and has created 45 jobs for the local economy.

MITCHELLS CELEBRATES 150-YEAR ANNIVERSARY

White Design has so far completed 34 new build projects for the leading pub operator and independent brewer, including three Marston’s Lodges. A further five new developments are due to start on site in the first half of the year.

One of Chesterfield’s oldest firms, Mitchells Chartered Accountants and Business Advisers, is celebrating its 150th anniversary.

The practice has also just completed its architectural and lead designer role for a new 79bed Premier Inn with Thyme Restaurant which has opened in the Cumbrian market town of Ulverston.

Andrew McDaid, partner at Mitchells, said: “We are delighted to be celebrating 150 years. Very few firms have been around for as long as we have. Over the last century and a half, we have helped so many local businesses to accelerate their growth.

The White Design team delivered an innovative design for the £5million project on a challenging site with the development opening on time and to budget.

To mark the significant milestone, the firm is hosting a party behind its Saltergate-based offices on 11 May, where staff will welcome past and present clients.

“Chesterfield is a thriving town and we look forward to another 150 years of working hard for our clients and seeing the area and its businesses grow and prosper.”

Kevin Unwin, White Design owner, said: “We have ambitious growth plans and 2018 has got off to an excellent start. “We are fortunate to work with some excellent clients. Over the last eight years we have completed over 30 projects for Marston’s Inns and Taverns across the Midlands, North West and North Wales as architect on one of three national design and build teams. It is hugely rewarding to work across the country for clients such as Marston’s and Whitbread’s delivering high quality hotels and pubs which are creating jobs and making great memories for so many people.”

SHEFFIELD BUSINESS IS AN INDUSTRY LEADER Independent waste management group, CSG, acquired the former Frogson Waste Management site in central Sheffield in 2016, and rebranded to CSG in January this year (2018). Since obtaining the site, CSG has worked hard to achieve the best possible standards for its 20 local members of staff, the business and the environment. After being examined and verified, the site has gained its IS09001:2015 and

ISO14001:2015 certifications which, along with its OHSAS18001 certification, makes it one of the leading sites in the waste management industry.

“Last year alone, our site took in 12,500 tonnes of waste, from hazardous and oil waste, to packaging that can be washed and then recycled.

Antony Gerken, permitting and compliance manager for CSG Sheffield, said: “These certifications mean that as a business we have successfully shown that we are committed to ensuring that we are compliant with all required legislation, protecting our workers and the environment.

“Although the certification is not a mandatory requirement, we want to provide our customers with the reassurance that we are doing everything we possibly can to protect the environment – and we recycle as much as possible. It is a great achievement for the site.” First For Business | www.ffb-online.co.uk 49
