Bigger and brighter AFTER 37 YEARS ON ECCLESALL ROAD, MISTER CARPET HAS FOUND A NEW HOME IN DERBYSHIRE. PREPARE TO BE IMPRESSED...

L-R: Steve and Jo with John and Jenny at the new showroom in Bradwell

hen it comes to finding the perfect floor covering for your home, Mister Carpet is the only place to go. Mister Carpet has been providing customers with outstanding care and quality products since it opened its doors in 1983, and after 37 successful years on Ecclesall Road, the business has made the move to Bradwell in the Hope Valley, waiting to welcome you with a much

bigger and brighter showroom. The family-run carpet and flooring specialist has gone from strength to strength since it was first opened by husband and wife John and Jenny, and though you’ll still see them helping out around the shop, it’s their son Steve, and daughter-in-law Jo who are now at the helm. All four are Bradwell locals, so when they saw their new premises were up for

sale they jumped at the chance to expand their business. Their Ecclesall Road showroom worked well for the time they were there, with customers still visiting them despite it being a small, compact shop. Their new Bradwell showroom is double the size, however, and at 120 square metres allows the Mister Carpet team to not only showcase more stock, but allows customers to browse samples at their leisure without tripping over one another, and their professional new reception desk is the perfect place for you to enjoy a tea or coffee whilst discussing what choice of floor coverings are required. The Mister Carpet team invite you to stop by and take a look around their new showroom, so you can see for yourself that although their location has changed, the top quality products and

The established business carries out both domestic and commercial work, and with the motto ‘no job is too big or too small’, the team can and will cater to all your needs; they’ve certainly done their fair share of interesting jobs, from fitting flooring in a narrowboat to the smallest caravan ever made. Their vast collection of flooring includes a multitude of carpets, from patterned wool and tartan to stripe and herringbone, stain resistant, velvet-look and more, and they’ve an increasingly large selection of vinyls too, available in everything from the latest designs to the old classics. They also have LVT samples available (Karndean, Polysafe, birch fusion, BMK and many more). Customers are welcome to view the whole range of samples in store, with the advantage of having the expert advice of the team on hand, and there’s no pressure selling at Mister Carpet, so when you visit you can browse without feeling pushed for a decision. You’re simply left to look around at your

leisure, with assistance always available if required. If you can’t make it down to their new showroom, don’t worry as Mister Carpet are still offering their shop at home service, where a member of the team will visit you direct at your home, bringing with them a range of samples for you to look at in various surroundings and under different types of lighting. With various early morning and evening appointments available, you can fit the appointment around your lifestyle, and Mister Carpet also offer a free design service and no-obligation measure service. If you do make it down to their Bradwell showroom but can’t find what you’re looking for, you’re always welcome to make an appointment to visit their warehouse, located just a stone’s throw from the new store, where their roll stock and larger remnants are kept. Mister Carpet has gone from being a nickname John was given during his years as a carpet fitter, to a household name that people know and trust. With excellent products, top quality service

and competitive prices, the family business has gained quite a reputation throughout Sheffield, Derbyshire and surrounding areas, and it’s not hard to see why. All the team at Mister Carpet wish to extend a heartfelt thank you to customers past, present and future for the support shown to their independent business, and they hope to welcome you into their new showroom soon. www.dobsonroofingservices.co.uk email: dobsonroofing@aol.com For the majority of us the most expensive purchase is likely to be our property. We fit alarms, security lights and take measures to protect it from burglars but there is also the threat of fraud. The HM Land Registry have set up a new service, the Property Alert Service. This is a free property monitoring service aimed at anyone who feels a property that has been registered with the Land Registry could be at risk from fraud. The type of properties that are at risk are investment properties, second homes or those that are not mortgaged or unoccupied. Older people who go abroad for winter are particularly at risk. What kind of fraud can take place? Forged Documents – a fraudster might forge documents to convince a mortgage lender or solicitor that they own the property, and mortgage your property without your knowledge – and will have disappeared with it very quickly. Online auctions – When homes are advertised through sites such as eBay or Gumtree but they are not legally owned by the seller.

How does it work? First, the property you want to monitor must be situated in England or Wales and registered with HM Land Registry. Once you have created an account and set up the property to monitor, an email alert is sent to you when there is activity relating to that property i.e. Searches or Applications are made. You don't have to own a property to create an account and set up an alert which may be useful to safeguard family members. Helpfully, you can also use the service if you are not online by calling the Property Alert team on 0300 006 0478. If you receive an alert about activity that seems suspicious you should take action quickly. The alert email will signpost you to who to contact or you can contact us to check the position. Rosalind Watchorn Solicitors deal with Wills, probate and property issues and are available to discuss your future plans with you. Please call on 0114 2290160 or email mail@rwatchorn.co.uk. Home visits are available if you are unable to attend the office.

dave stone design The difference is in the detail.

Bespoke kitchen and bedroom design and project management “Exactly what we wanted!” “Our new kitchen and social area from Dave Stone Design attracts positive comments from friends and family everytime they visit. Oozing the ‘wow’ factor, it has transformed our entire home and created a stunning social and dining space, which is ideal for entertaining. Having used Dave Stone Design previously for a new bedroom, we were confident about how they would handle this more complex project. We already knew that we were in safe hands from the very outset – especially when we were invited to view other clients’ kitchens. Our idea was to build outwards at the back of the house for three meters and also convert the unused garage. In this way, we would gain a utility room and downstairs toilet, an en-suite bedroom and an outstanding kitchen with social/dining area. The whole installation – from design to final installation – was perfectly orchestrated and project managed by Dan. The design was innovative and inspirational, and the fitters were meticulous perfectionists. Liam, in particular, was exemplary. Nothing was too much trouble for him or any of the team. With a boiling water tap, down draught extractor, induction hob, wine cooler, full-length fridge and freezer, full-size dual oven, combination microwave/oven, attractive designer radiator, automated sockets, handless drawers and a beautiful and expansive granite worktop, this in-vogue, grey island kitchen is what dreams are made of! Easy to maintain, easy to clean, functional, contemporary, airy and aesthetically impressive, our new kitchen is simply perfect!” 360 CHATSWORTH ROAD, CHESTERFIELD S40 2BY TELEPHONE 01246 200678 MOBILE 07737 984649. www.DaveStoneDesign.com Dan@DaveStoneDesign.com Find us on Facebook & Instagram

I am also heavily involved with fundraising for Chesterfield SCBU in memory of my son.” “Over the next couple of years I am hoping to get my parents fully retired, as they both still play an active part in the business, and I will take full control,” says Jo-Anne. “Long term, I hope to expand the business to offer further accommodation and provide the most unique, bespoke wedding packages within Derbyshire.” 56 www.sheffieldvibe.com

Natasha Singleton of Lashh Boutique Lash and hair extensionist Natasha Singleton made her dreams come true when she opened Lashh Boutique. As the name would suggest, Lashh specialises in providing quality lash and hair extensions, as well as lash perming and brow treatments. The salon also has a state of the art sunbed, and a wide range of tanning products available too. Natasha’s days at the salon are increasingly busy, she says; “I usually work every day until late in the evening. On a normal day I will be seeing around ten clients on average as we are an extremely busy salon.” And it’s not going to quieten down any time soon either, as they’ve added hair extensions to their list of services. “Hair extensions are becoming more and more popular,” says Natasha. “I’m looking to expand my business and provide a service which can be affordable for everyone.” Though Lashh is already doing incredibly well, Natasha doesn’t want to rest on her laurels, and is already looking ahead to the future of the salon. “I would like to continue to grow my salon, even perhaps opening a few more in other parts of the city. “It’s important that you find what you love and go for it. Don’t set yourself limits, set yourself goals and celebrate each time you reach a milestone.”

Lauren Slack of PetStay PetStay Sheffield is Lauren Slack’s second franchise area, having run the Huddersfield, Halifax and Barnsley branch for the past three years. “I have set up a business from scratch before and find the franchise route is a tried and tested way of making your business a success. Branches have the support of head office and your fellow franchisees, whereas if you set up on your own, you have to learn by your mistakes which sometimes can be costly.” PetStay Sheffield is made up of a team of local carers who will look after your beloved dogs in their own home whilst you, the owner, are on holiday. “You can rest assured your dog will be looked after like you do at home,” says Lauren. “Our carers are licensed and insured and meet the guidelines and criteria set out by DEFRA. “We have fantastic feedback from our customers and I believe this is down to my dedicated team of carers who do a fabulous job and go the extra mile for the dogs and owners.”

Thirty years ago, Stephanie Connelly, founder and principal of The Old School House Nursery, set up and grew her first nursery at Benty Lane, Crosspool, and has since seen it forge an excellent reputation. In 2007, Stephanie acquired a second nursery at Endcliffe, at which point her daughter, Liza Connelly, a former solicitor, joined the family business. “It has continued to grow from strength to strength,” says Stephanie. Open from 7.30am to 6.30pm, the children at The Old School House Nursery schools enjoy the best possible start in life, with parents able to access a range of quality care and education. Children are welcome to join the nurseries from just three months old, with after-school French and holiday clubs available for those aged five to 11. Stephanie has based her business on the very high standard of childcare she wanted for her own children, and advises other women in business to “keep focused and don’t give anything less than what you would want or expect for yourself.” Voted ‘outstanding’ by Ofsted, The Old School House has excellent inspection reports and all standards under the current EYFS were met. It also has the quality assurance of being an Investor in People (GOLD) and is an accredited training centre for CACHE (the leading qualification in childcare).

Denise Thursfield of 1stField Properties and Management Ltd Valuer and director at 1stField Properties and Management, Denise Thursfield enjoys a varied work life at the residential estate agent and property management company. Her typical days start with a coffee and a catch up with all members of staff in the office, but the rest is somewhat up to chance. “My day varies from appointment to appointment,” says Denise. “I could be carrying out valuations for sale or rental properties or carrying out accompanied viewings, and I will usually be back and forth to the office during the day between appointments.” Denise is excited for the business to begin expanding into new areas, and this will be their main focus over the next 12 months. But she assures us they’ll still be providing an excellent service to their existing customers. Coming up to semi-retirement, Denise will be looking at taking a small step back from the business, but she says: “I will continue to carry out valuations and help with training younger members of staff. And to any would-be women in business, don’t be afraid to step up and take risks, just go for it!” www.sheffieldvibe.com 59

Sometimes even Chef and landlady Heather (right) criticism, but build on that, and don’t be intimidated or bullied by other people no matter their role or position.” As she’s settled well into her position at The Bulls Head, Heather thanks the help she’s received from those close to her. “My Ei Group Beacon area managers Mark Whiteley and Matt Gurney have really guided and supported me over the last five years,” says Heather. “And there’s not really just one woman that’s helped me, but a number of women who’ve helped build my confidence. One being Joanne Bond and my mum, as both of them have always believed in me.” 60 www.sheffieldvibe.com

Lisa adds: “There is an increasing role for women in many engineering, construction and manufacturing, rail – to name but a few – sectors. There is a skills shortage and not so many people coming in to these areas. So, time for women to go for it. “I work with a coach, Lisa Walker, and her mantra is ‘Get Clear, Get Confident’. I think that is key. Keep focussed and keep your confidence and my mum always says ‘treat others as you want to be treated, and you can’t go far wrong’. “In fact, I was a Highly Commended at the Athena Awards a few years ago and the eight principles there are ones that are very relevant.”

Sam Round of S11 Carpets and Flooring “My passion for carpets started at a well-known, high-end independent retailer in Sheffield, and from there I worked my way up to being an area business manager for a luxury carpet manufacturer, before moving on to be a commercial flooring representative for a well-respected company in Yorkshire,” we’re told by Sam Round, owner of S11 Carpets and Flooring. “Running my own business in a wonderful city like Sheffield has always been the dream, and now I’m here I couldn’t be happier. “As the owner of S11 Carpets I pretty much do it all – except the fitting! I give advice and help with design ideas, and I personally go out to visit customers in their own homes to take out samples and measure up,” says Sam. “It’s so important to me to provide a top class service throughout. “My advice to other women would be to work hard and be smart, no one is entitled to anything without putting in the right amount of effort and gaining experience along the way.”

Julie Hopewell of Shed World You might recognise her face from the Channel 4 series, How to Get Rich Quick, but when her face isn’t popping up on national TV, you’ll see Julie Hopewell hard at work at Shed World. “We supply quality garden buildings to enhance outside living, storage and work spaces,” says Julie. “We operate out of three branches and I arrive in the morning, usually at our head office near the arena, and my first job of the day is to ensure our distribution team have a full day of deliveries and confirming our manufacturers have all the correct orders from the day before. “After that, I crack on with admin, orders, advertising, social media and customers who need help in branch. And I have to keep up to date with our prices to ensure I am passing the best discounts on to our lovely customers. “Obviously I have a fab team of loyal staff who this wouldn’t work without, but knowing they deliver 100 per cent enables me to juggle my work and family time as a busy mother and grandma. “My long term plans are to keep our family-run business at the forefront of our customers minds, for our service, price and exceptional quality, and my son Steven who now helps with the business will step into my shoes – but not literally!” www.sheffieldvibe.com 61

Eterno Aesthetics is a medical skin clinic dedicated to providing an honest, highly-skilled and safe practice to help you age well and look natural. Owner and lead practitioner Hannah Depledge is an aesthetic nurse prescriber, and has spent the last few years training to an advanced level in facial aesthetics. “In an industry where safety is compromised by inadequately trained practitioners, my aim is to provide my clients with a holistic and tailored approach to skin care,” says Hannah. “To guarantee that they receive treatments to meet their specific skin requirements, address their problem areas and subtly enhance and refresh their natural features.” The aesthetic market is growing, and it’s been great for women looking to get into business, with “an increasing number of nurses looking to get into the industry, and these nurses are predominantly women.” And there’s one woman in particular who has inspired Hannah throughout her own journey. “My business coach Pam, owned an aesthetic clinic in the past which unfortunately didn’t work out. Rather than giving up, she used this negative experience and turned it into a positive, and she now runs a business that helps coach other aesthetic clinic owners to successfully run a business and not make the same mistakes she did.”

Pearls of wisdom MAKE A CULTURED CHOICE WHEN IT COMES TO CHOOSING THE RIGHT PEARL, WITH A LITTLE HELP FROM PA JEWELLERY. earls are perfect for summer weddings and garden parties, adding classic detail to an outfit. When choosing them you will probably notice that prices vary quite considerably, and it is not always immediately obvious why, so here are some of the features to look out for. Firstly, freshwater cultured pearls generally cost less than saltwater cultured pearls. One reason for this is that multiple freshwater pearls may be grown at the same time in the same mussel whereas saltwater cultured pearls can only be grown singly. You can learn more about this in our blog, ‘Pearls: A Cultured Choice’ on our website. Pearls come in a surprisingly wide range of shades: like going to a DIY store and finding an entire shelf of cream paints! They have a body colour and secondary overtones: white may err towards yellowish or pinkish while black pearls will often have strong overtones of

purple or green. Some pearls may display a characteristic iridescent effect called orient with shimmering colours appearing to float across the surface; this can be very attractive. The most desirable shape for a pearl is perfectly round. However, offround to button shapes are popular for stud earrings as they sit neatly, while symmetrical drop-shaped pearls are perfect for earrings or pendants. Increasingly unusual, baroque shapes can give a more relaxed look; they make a good choice if you want a less formal necklace. A perfectly smooth surface is preferable, but most pearls will have blemishes of some kind. These can range from tiny indentations to significant ridges affecting the overall shape. Minor blemishes can be hidden by placing a drill hole or setting in the correct position, while major ridges or chips can be more problematic and decrease desirability and value considerably. Pearls have a lustre that is aptly described as ‘pearly’, but it can still vary. A brighter, more reflective lustre is associated with thicker nacre layers and smoother surface. If the pearl looks dull this can be because the nacre is quite thin which can reduce durability.

Matching gemstones that have so many variables is not straightforward, but it can make a big difference to a finished piece. Traditionally, pearl necklaces graduated in size although now they often feature an entire row of pearls of the same size. In addition to ensuring the colour and lustre match, it is important to have pearls of the same size and shape for a smooth look around a necklace or balance within a pair of earrings. If you are trying to match existing pieces, it is important to bring them with you so that a match, especially for colour, may be found. Evans Lee “In the era of tick box mentality, where technology appears only to complicate transactions and the ability to properly communicate (not by email) is a dying art, Simon Lee is head and shoulders above the crowd. His understanding of the systems, his empathy with both client and purchaser and his determination to complete the task through constant verbal communication mark him out as an agent destined for success. Whilst most of his competition merely aspire to mediocrity and the process of buying and selling is hindered rather than helped by both lenders and (dare I say it…) slow lawyers, he strives to overcome each problem in a relaxed yet thoughtful manner. Different he may be, but do not underestimate him or his staff. Our house was sold and completed as promised in eight weeks. Out of this world JOIN THE SPACE RACE... SPEND YOUR SUMMER FOLLOWING THE NEW BRICKTROPOLIS CITY CENTRE TRAIL.

First man on the moon... Neil Armstrong

Struggling for something to do with the kids this summer? If you’ve exhausted the parks, seen everything on the cinema and been for umpteen walks in the Peak District, bring them to Sheffield city centre for an event that is out of this world. Building on the success of the World Landmarks trail last year, this summer sees a new Outer Space theme join the Bricktropolis programme – think astronauts, rockets, shuttles and more. To celebrate 50 years of the moon landing, Outer Space is a galactic visitor trail of LEGO® brick models, all constructed by Bright Bricks, the UK’s only LEGO®brick building company. Families are invited to take part in a journey of discovery that follows humankind from Earth to the stars, with an array of planets, astronauts, space vehicles and rockets to find along the interstellar trail. Find the Vostok I and Saturn V rockets, join Neil Armstrong on the moon and even meet a friendly visitor from outer space. There are 15 incredible space models in total. Standing at 1.9m tall, the Neil Armstrong model is

made up of more than 57,000 bricks, while the 2.8m-tall Apollo 11 Saturn V rocket has 68,583 bricks. Diane Jarvis, Sheffield BID Manager, said: “Last year, Sheffield Bricktropolis and its trail of worldfamous landmarks attracted over 25,000 visitors. We hope to build on that success this year with a Challenger fantastic new Space shuttle outer space theme. “One of Sheffield BID’s key objectives is to keep Sheffield city centre busy throughout the year. August can be a quieter time with students away and many people on their summer holiday, so Bricktropolis is great opportunity to get families, residents and new visitors into the city centre and support our local businesses. “The trail is designed to encourage people to explore all corners of the city centre and not just the well-trodden routes.” Families can take advantage of this free event and explore the city centre as they discover hidden galaxies. The Interactive Building Zone will transform an empty unit into a place for play, creativity and education. Free workshops and a range of fringe activities will ignite imaginations across Sheffield and beyond. www.sheffieldvibe.com 79

EXHIBITIONS John Ruskin: Art & Wonder

It Moves Forward: The Work of Richard Hamilton

Until 15 September Millennium Gallery www.museums-sheffield.org.uk Part of international celebrations taking place throughout 2019 to mark 200 years of the influential artist, critic and scholar, this new exhibition explores how Ruskin championed the joy that nature can bring to our lives and the sense of awe it can evoke within us. Ruskin’s passion for nature began in childhood with a fascination for minerals and mountains. Later in life he wrote at length about geology, botany and zoology, explaining how the study of natural history was central to his thinking around both art and architecture. Ruskin believed an understanding of the natural world enriches our lives in many ways; for him, appreciating its beauty was just as valuable as any scientific knowledge. Art & Wonder celebrates how artists have captured the incredible spectacle of nature. Discover dazzling highlights from the Guild of St George’s Ruskin Collection, including botanical and ornithological studies and jewel-like mineral specimens, alongside significant national loans and new commissions by contemporary artists Timorous Beasties and Dan Holdsworth.

Until 26 October Graves Gallery www.museums-sheffield.org.uk Richard Hamilton is considered one of the founding fathers of Pop Art. This new exhibition at Sheffield’s Graves Gallery will explore his seminal role in defining the movement, featuring over 30 works spanning the breadth of his career. While often thought of as an American style, many believe Pop Art actually originated in Britain with Hamilton’s ground-breaking use of advertising images and collage in the 1950s. Made in 1955 and using multiple images of land, sea, air and space travel, Man, Machine and Motion was a key moment in the British development of Pop Art and preceded Warhol’s Campbell’s Soups Cans (1962) by several years. As well as being one of its earliest proponents, Hamilton was also one of the most critical artists of the Pop generation. By bringing together such disparate imagery as the pictures of the home, farm machinery and political protests, his work interrogated what an image meant in the 20th century and how, through dissemination and repetition, it could affect how we see the world. It Moves Forward draws from significant private and public collections

to bring together works from over 30 years of Hamilton’s career. The exhibition demonstrates the breadth and depth of Hamilton’s uniquely searching, gritty and humorous approach to mass culture.

Joe Scarborough: Life in the Big Village 17 August-24 November Weston Park Museum www.museums-sheffield.org.uk A brand new exhibition celebrating one of Sheffield’s best-loved artists is set to open at Weston Park Museum this summer. Joe Scarborough has affectionately documented Sheffield’s history in glorious technicolour in a career spanning over 50 years. Life in the Big Village will bring together over 60 paintings and drawings for the first time in over 25 years. Joe Scarborough was born in Pitsmoor in 1937. He first began to paint having spent six years working at Thorpe Hesley Colliery and as a miner found his inspiration in the colour and light above ground. After selling his first painting “for a fiver”, Scarborough left the pit and took several labouring jobs which allowed him to paint in the morning and evening. Joe said: “From the start of my career my paintings have been inspired by Sheffield and the people who live here. I’ve always seen the city as my native village – from the local pubs and parks to places where people work and live.”

FILM Once Upon a Time in Hollywood 14 August Quentin Tarantino returns to the big screen with this homage to Hollywood’s golden age. And what a cast. It stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, Margot Robbie, Kurt Russell, Timothy Olyphant, Dakota Fanning, Luke Perry, Margaret Qualley, and Al Pacino.

THEATRE The Tiger Who Came to Tea 1-2 August / Buxton Opera House https://buxtonoperahouse.org.uk/ Direct from the West End, the Olivier Award nominated smash hit show, The Tiger Who Came to Tea returns on tour, celebrating over ten years on stage! The doorbell rings just as Sophie and her mummy are sitting down to tea. Who could it possibly be? What they certainly don’t expect to see at the door is a big, stripy tiger! Join the tea-guzzling tiger in this delightful family show; packed with oodles of magic, sing-a-long songs and clumsy chaos! A stunning stage adaptation, by David Wood, of the classic Judith Kerr tale of teatime mayhem... expect to be surprised!

Puttin’ On The Ritz 9-10 August / Buxton Opera House https://buxtonoperahouse.org.uk/ Featuring the music of George Gershwin, Irving Berlin and Cole Porter, Puttin’ On The Ritz is a spectacular stage production that features some of the most famous songs of the Golden Age of Hollywood. Step back in time to an era when Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly were the kings of the silver screen.

Grand Hotel 22-24 August / Buxton Opera House https://buxtonoperahouse.org.uk/ Come to the Grand Hotel, Berlin, in 1928. Hearts are won, lives are lost or begun and the music never stops for a grand parade of guests and staff whose worlds briefly inter-twine. Among the eccentric hotel guests are: a cynical doctor, who observes all; a fading prima ballerina; a fatally ill Jewish bookkeeper,

spending his final days in luxury; a baron, young, handsome, noble and broke; an honest businessman forced to turn crooked; a typist dreaming of Hollywood success. Present Company, now celebrating 30 years of performing at Buxton Opera House, revive the Tony Award-winning 1989 musical.

Pomegranate Summer Party Season Various dates Pomegranate Theatre, Chesterfield www.chesterfieldtheatres.co.uk The Summer Party Season features a trio of plays (and more) that should entertain and titillate – with plenty to spare. The Noel Coward written Present Laughter (13-17 August) follows successful and self-obsessed light comedy actor Garry Essendine as he prepares to travel for a touring commitment in Africa. Amid a series of events bordering on farce, Garry has to deal with women who want to seduce him, placate both his long-suffering secretary and his estranged wife, cope with a crazed young playwright, and overcome his impending mid-life crisis. The Kings Speech (20-24 August), based on the film of the same name, brings the audience face to face with Bertie, Duke of York, as he is thrust onto the world stage as King George VI following his brother’s abdication. With the Nazi threat looming and civil unrest at home, royal secrets explode around Bertie as he struggles to find his voice as King. Wife Begins at Forty (27-31) is a delightful mixture of comedy and pathos. George, believing he has a happy marriage, is shattered to be told by Linda, his wife of 18 years, that she is going to leave him. With advice from their son, his father, and Roger from next door, George takes drastic steps to rejuvenate his marriage with hilarious consequences.

MUSIC Dronfest 10 August / Cliffe Park, Dronfield https://dronfest.co.uk Who would have thought that a private party in June 1999 would still be going strong after 20 years? Dronfest returns for this special 20th anniversary and sees the likes of Ferocious Dog, Clear Vinyl and Firecracker Vida take to the stage. There will be 17 acts performing in total with debuts from Arielle, a singer, songwriter and guitarist from Austin, Texas, and The Stereosonics, who have mastered the large catalogue of Stereophonics songs and who began to perform live on a regular basis. On the ‘Other Stage’ you will be blown away by the likes of Contrabanned, Dronny Bottom Buskers, Rogue, The Buddies, The Natterjacks, Mark Mathews and The Cabronitas. Food-wise there will be woodfired pizza, Mexican street food, crepes, authentic Greek food, The Noodle Bar and Burger Bar, whilst Drone Valley Brewery will be returning with their selection of real ales. For kids there’ll be a treasure hunt and fun inflatables as well as a workshop hosted by Jason Heppenstall of HeppoArt, where they will be able to indulge themselves in some “Spoon Bashing”. Dronfest has raised over £102,000 for very worthy local causes over the last 20 years – a fantastic achievement.

100 not out CELEBRATE WITH COFFEE AND CAKE AT INSOMNIA, WRITES RICHARD ABBEY. hites of Calver is celebrating a very special centenary this year, and what better way to celebrate than with a cup of coffee and a slice of cake in their hugely popular café? Current owner Edward White’s grandfather, E.T White, started the business 100 years ago and it has occupied the same site at Calver crossroads – although expanded somewhat – since the Second World War. It now encompasses a petrol station, convenience store and the aforementioned café, which serves fairtrade coffee from Irish chain, Insomnia. Edward took the reins from his father, Ron, in 2001 with a vision to “develop a local store with a farm shop feel, offering a comprehensive range of local produce.” He certainly seems to be ticking all the boxes. During the hour or so we spent there, there was a steady stream of customers passing through, a mix of walkers, cyclists, bikers and those just needing a

W

break before continuing on their journey. It’s a light and bright space with plenty of seating inside and out. There’s a chiller with prepared sandwiches and drinks and a huge display case full of homemade treats, which we were told rotate on a regular business to please those customers coming back for more. Coffee, obviously, takes centre stage; there’s a good choice available as you can imagine with vegan and lactose-free options on offer as well as ‘Ice Caps’, a blended frappe – a sort of coffee-infused milkshake blended with ice and flavourings. Given that we arrived on a warm summer’s day, I tried the Oreo cookie version (£3.50), which was sweet and refreshing. My wife had a breakfast tea (£2). Food-wise we tucked into a very good croque monsieur (£4.25) and a warmed chicken and bacon club ciabatta (£4.10) and shared a packet of Chardonnay wine vinegar Yorkshire crisps (90p). The sandwiches were both excellent; the croque monsieur in particular was full of cheesy goodness.

Not wanting to leave without trying one of their cakes, we indulged with a slab (‘slice’ wouldn’t really do it justice) of carrot cake (£2.65) and a wedge of gluten-free Daim bar slice (£2.50). We were glad we did. A very good and strong Americano (£2.20) finished things off nicely. Whatever your reason for stopping by, it’s the Insomnia café is a lovely spot to a while away an hour or so. Just don’t leave without having a coffee and some cake, celebration or not. Insomnia Whites of Calver, Kingsgate, Calver, Hope Valley, S32 3WY Tel: 01433 639458 www.insomniacoffee.co.uk

Break from the norm BUTLER’S BALTI BREAKS THE STEROTYPE FOR INDIAN RESTAURANTS, WRITES RHIANA HUGHES. nce you’ve been to one curry house, you’ve been to them all, right? At least that’s what I thought before I walked through the doors of Broad Lane’s Butler’s Balti. I’d driven past the restaurant countless times, and even considered popping in once or twice back when I worked just down the road on Queen Street, but for some reason I’d written it off as a destination purely for business lunches and quick after work teas. How wrong I was. Butler’s is Sheffield’s first authentic Balti house, and after my experience at the restaurant I’m not at all surprised that they’ve remained so popular over the years. Perhaps one of my favourite things about dining out at an Indian restaurant is the inevitable pre-starter of poppadoms and their accompanying pickle trays. With an impressive selection of seven pickles ranging from sweet mango to mint and coriander, my partner and I tucked in without hesitation as we gave the menu a thorough once over. Butler’s easy to navigate menu made

O

choosing our meals the simplest task of the day, with my other half ordering the tandoori chicken (£3.75) to start, while for me it was the king prawn butterfly (£4.95). Still enjoying our poppadoms, we may not have noticed our waiter approaching with our starters if it weren’t for the sound of my partner’s chicken still sizzling on a hot bed of onions. Fragrant and aromatic, his chicken was tender and that bright pinky-orange that you know means flavour. While his first course was a silent, melt in the mouth affair, mine had all the crisp and crunch. Tender and buttery king prawns were coated in a generous layer of breadcrumbs, so moreish that I’d almost forgotten about my impending main course. Looking for a little bit of spice, I ordered the chicken tikka jalfrezi (£8.50), which of course is impossible to order without a plain naan (£2.50) and a serving of pilau rice (£2.95), which my partner and I shared. It was Butler’s butter chicken (£8.50) that really stole the show, however. Not at

first what was expected, a hot dish with a white, creamy sauce was placed in front of my partner, and for a second I could tell he thought he’d been brought the wrong dish. Just a stir away though, was the pale orange he’d been looking for. His initial fears turned to joy as he tucked in, using his keema naan (£3.35) to catch any runaway sauce, which he noted contained a much heartier portion of lamb than that he’s had elsewhere. We left Butler’s Balti without the usual too-full feeling, although I was full of regret that I’d waited so long to pay them a visit. I suppose I’d better start making up for lost time… Butler’s Balti 44-46 Broad Lane, Sheffield, S1 4BT Tel: 0114 276 8141 www.butlersbalti.com

Festival fun IT’S ONE OF THE STAND-OUT EVENTS IN THE RACING CALENDAR... HERE’S WHAT TO EXPECT AT THIS YEAR’S WILLIAM HILL ST LEGER FESTIVAL. Images courtesy www.andrewkellyphotography.co.uk

his September, be sure to experience Yorkshire’s Classic at the St Leger Festival, hosted by Doncaster Racecourse. Teeming with food, music and fashion throughout the four-day celebration (as well as top-class horse racing, of course) this event is one of the biggest of the year in Yorkshire’s social calendar, and you won’t want to miss it. The William Hill St Leger Festival runs over a four-day period, between 11 and 14 September, and each day offers a new and unique experience for racegoers to enjoy. The festival ends on a climax with the iconic Leger Stakes – the classic horse race that has played a central role in Yorkshire’s history since its establishment in 1776. 2018 saw trainer Aidan O’Brien take the top prize for the sixth time in the festival’s history, when his horse Kew Gardens romped home. Visitors can experience the Champagne Lawn, cheer the sporting action from the Grandstand, enjoy fine dining in the Lincoln Restaurant or visit the elegant trackside Club 1776 Restaurant marquee. Regardless of the tickets you purchase, all visitors are guaranteed to have an outstanding time. The fun doesn’t stop there, though, because after the racing there’s also brilliant live entertainment and music, ensuring that there’s never a dull moment for Festival visitors. Here’s a closer look at what’s happening across the four days.

T

Leger Legends Day

DFS Ladies’ Day

(Wednesday 11 September) The opening day of the St Leger Festival sees retired professional jockeys return to the saddle for St Leger Legends Day, first run in 2010. The jockeys participate in a charity race, and the money raised is donated to Doncaster’s Northern Racing College and Jack Berry House, a rehabilitation centre for injured racers. Leger Legends Day is a perfect opener to the festival, so head down to Town Moor to see some familiar faces and to support this worthwhile cause.

(Thursday 12 September) Brimming with glitz and glamour, the DFS Ladies’ Day is a wonderful occasion to dig out your best dresses and heels as visitors compete to win the crown for the Best Dressed Lady. The winner of the competition will then go on to represent Doncaster Racecourse at the final of Yorkshire’s Best Dressed Lady in October 2019. On Ladies’ Day there’s also the Silk Series Final race, specifically designed for female jockeys. Both the 2017 and 2018 races were won by Megan Nicholls, daughter of jockeyturned-trainer Paul Nicholls. The event is known to attract over 15,000 people each year from all over the country, so make sure you bag yourself a spot at Doncaster Racecourse to experience this unmissable day of racing and live entertainment after the races, featuring a DJ set from Spice Girl Melanie C, and refreshments.

The excitement doesn’t end after the racing has finished; you can also catch DJ sets from Spice Girl Melanie C on Ladies’ Day and Kaiser Chiefs’ Ricky Wilson on Gentleman’s Day 98 www.sheffieldvibe.com

Gentlemen’s Day

St Leger Day

(Friday 13 September) Similar to Ladies’ Day, St Leger’s Gentlemen’s Day is a sophisticated and stylish day for chaps who want to don their sharpest suits for the chance to win the award for Best Dressed Male, as well as for those who wish to simply enjoy a day out with their friends and family. Taking prime position is the Doncaster Cup horse race – the oldest and one of the most exciting races run under the Rules of Horse Racing. After the thrill of the race, enjoy the live DJ set from Kaiser Chiefs’ Ricky Wilson whilst tasting the delicious food and drink on offer around the racecourse. For the best view of the Doncaster Cup (or any of the races run throughout the festival), book a place in the County Enclosure, which allows you full access to all areas of the course so you feel like the ultimate VIP.

(Saturday 14 September) More than 250,000 visitors flock to Doncaster for the St Leger Festival, and the grand finale is undoubtedly the St Leger Stakes. The world’s oldest Classic horse race is open to three-year-old thoroughbred colts and fillies. But there’s also a full programme of top-class competitive sporting action throughout the day with races such as the Group Two Champagne Stakes and the fast-paced and competitive Portland Handicap Sprint. In addition to the thrilling races, which always add an element of anticipation for the crowd at Doncaster Racecourse, the William Hill St Leger Festival is a fantastic social occasion complete with fashion, live entertainment, food and drink, making the entire four-day event all the more enjoyable and unforgettable.

Dating back to the 18th century this spectacular former manor house and hospital was originally home to the D’Arcy family and it certainly has the wow factor, creating a strong first impression with its pretty winding tree-lined drive which curves in a teasing fashion, delaying the first glimpse of the impressive frontage of this leaf-clad hotel which is set in 55 acres of gardens and meadowland. But once you’ve soaked up the setting and strolled around the grounds (which could have been designed with the perfect wedding album in mind) just remember that you don’t have to tie the knot, or wait for an invitation, to eat in this impressive setting. The midweek a la carte menu is well worth a visit in its own right and at £24.95 for three courses is reasonably priced. Despite the grand setting the Bamford Restaurant is an intimate, low-lit affair, just right for a midweek evening meal. You can mix and match with the bar menu which contains plenty of comfort

food classics but we were won over by the summer a la carte selection which was packed with variety and individual touches. For starters my pan-fried scallops were nicely caramelised and perfectly cooked, served with wasabi pea puree which had just the slightest suggestion of peppery bite, saffron arancini and crispy parma ham (£3 supplement). My friend Liz was impressed by a generous portion of chicken, pancetta and soft, doughy gnocchi served in a mushroom veloute with truffle oil. My main course of rib-eye steak, cooked medium rare as requested with a rich and savoury peppercorn sauce, thick-cut chips, mushroom, tomato and salad (£3 supplement) delivered big flavours and a hunk of beef with a satisfying and slightly chewy consistency. Liz opted for the taste of the sea, a selection of sparkling fresh and beautifully cooked seafood including salmon and scallops, served with crispy potato, chorizo and chilli bisque with seasonal vegetables. Desserts definitely cater for those with a very sweet tooth. No problems here on that score. Raspberry macaroon with

pink gin, rhubarb and ginger and blueberry with lemon curd and pistachio biscotti was a vision in blushing pink with a welcome sherbet kick to stop it being too saccharine. Mango parfait with coconut ice-cream was another winning combination, with a curl of brandy snap and a refreshing pineapple salsa to round off proceedings. The bar and restaurant were both quite busy for a soggy Tuesday evening in late June and a glass or two of New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc (£4.75) and Australian Cabernet Sauvignon (£5.50) from a nicely balanced and reasonably priced wine list helped to make this a midweek treat to remember. TRAVEL

Look closer to home GREAT SUMMER VACATIONS CAN BE FOUND RIGHT ON YOUR DOORSTEP. WE LOOK AT GLAMPING IN LANCASHIRE, A CITY BREAK IN NEWCASTLE AND LUXURY IN THE LAKES.

By Richard Abbey

Samlesbury Hall, Lancashire s we rounded the bend on the tree-lined gravel driveway and our accommodation came into view, my children’s faces lit up. “Are we staying there?” they asked. Now, children can be hard to read at times; they are either incredibly hard to please or incredibly easy to please depending on the mood they’re in. Thankfully my two fell into the latter category. I think they were impressed. “We most certainly are,” I replied. “Wow,” they countered. The look on their faces was a picture. Clearly sold from their first look, my wife and I were perhaps a bit more sceptical. What we were looking at was a sort of cross between a gypsy caravan and an old air raid shelter. Would we all fit? Would it be cold? Were the first questions that sprang that to mind. In short, yes and no. The Shepherd’s Hut that would be our ‘home’ for the next two nights was like

nothing we’d seen before. The bluepainted corrugated metal dwelling, perched on four wagon wheels, housed a real oasis of calm and luxury. It was quirky but cosy and comfortable too with everything you could need – double bunk beds with memory foam mattresses, low-wattage electricity to keep your phone charged, free wifi, a kettle and, oh, central heating and an ensuite. When we were offered the opportunity to try glamping, this was probably not what we had in mind. This was much, much better. There was plenty of room for all of us but, blessed with good weather during our stay, we took full advantage of the outside area in front of our hut, which had a picnic bench, fire pit and barbecue (available on request). There was plenty of grassed space for my kids to kick a ball around without encroaching on anyone else too. Our Shepherd’s Hut was one of 28

CLOCKWISE FROM BELOW: The comfortable, luxury interiors in the Shepherd’s Huts; Suitably attired for the ‘Bee Experience’

Just six miles from Preston, the hall was built by Gilbert de Southworth and was the home of his family until the early 17th century. It has since been many things, including a public house and a girls’ boarding school, but is now open to the public, attracting 50,000 visitors a year, and is a popular wedding venue. The huts have been a recent addition but have quickly proved to be popular – their quirkiness is obviously a huge selling point. The Hamlet is a short walk from the hall and offers all the peace and quiet you could want. If you want to explore there’s an adventure trail, kid’s playground and neighbouring golf centre with a driving range and crazy golf. Samlesbury Hall is also home to the Bee and Heritage Centre, which is run by Simon and Kath Cordingley. As part of our visit we enrolled in one of their ‘Bee Experiences’, which saw us all donning specialist suits and visiting one of their many hives. The centre provides visitors with the opportunity to explore the working lives of honeybees and their importance to our environment and economy. Simon and Kath currently maintain some 150 colonies of honeybees at 15 locations across the North West and North Wales. They run an ethical bee-keeping programme that sees the production of honey as a by-product of their biodiversity work. They then work with carefully-chosen, local producers to extend the value of their honeys into bespoke, premium products such as gin, chocolate and beer. The hour that we spent with the couple was frankly fascinating. We looked into the workings of the hives, about workers and drones, and found out how the Queen bee is all powerful. And

yes, we did get to try some of their wonderful honey too. If you’re worried about what to eat during your stay, don’t be. On our first night there we took full advantage of the weather, requesting a barbecue and cooking some sausages as well as toasting some marshmallows over the fire pit. The hall also has a restaurant, open for breakfast and lunch up to 3pm, and don’t miss a trip to Dottie’s Wafflery, which will satisfy all your sweet tooth cravings – think milkshakes, ice cream, Knickerbocker Glories and, of course, waffles and pancakes. If you fancy heading out, there’s plenty of decent pubs and restaurants within a five-minute drive. We enjoyed a lovely cooked breakfast in the restaurant on both mornings perched in front of the roaring open fire and also sampled lunch. You can prebook afternoon tea, which looked to be hugely popular, but we opted for the a la carte menu; slow cooked shin of beef and a grilled Cajun chicken sandwich were both excellent. After lunch we had a wander round Samlesbury Hall

the hall, which is free to visit, and discovered its history with witches, ghosts and Robert the Bruce all laying some claim to Samlesbury. Meanwhile, the sun-drenched courtyard was the perfect spot to enjoy one of Dottie’s ice creams while my children played ‘hook a duck’ in the fountain. If you can’t quite let go of those luxuries you’ve become accustomed to, a stay in one of Samlesbury’s Shepherd’s Huts is the perfect compromise. You get peace and quiet, a historic hall to explore and accommodation that’s far from your run-of-the-mill hotel room. The kids will love it too. Mine certainly did.

Details: The Shepherd’s Huts at Samlesbury Hall sleep up to four people and are available all year round, priced from £25 per person, per night. Contact helena@salmesburyhall.co.uk or call 01254 812010 to book your stay. The Bee Experience is priced £40 per person and the centre is open on Wednesdays and Sundays. Find out more by visiting www.thebeecentre.org or follow them on social media @thebeecentre. Getting there: Samlesbury Hall is about a 1hr 45 minute drive from Sheffield. Blackpool and Southport are about 40 minutes if you fancy heading to coast, or you can head north to the Lake District, which takes about an hour. www.sheffieldvibe.com 109

Jesmond Dene House, Newcastle upon Tyne

By Chris Wilson

ou don’t often put food first when choosing a hotel for a mini break. Location is important of course, and you want a few lovely comforts that are several notches above what you get at home... luxury bathroom products, fluffy robes, that sort of thing. But when it comes to the dining room, apart from a decent breakfast to set you up for the day you’ll probably end up eating out. Correct? Well, you could, but in the case of Jesmond Dene House you’d be missing out on something rather wonderful. Head chef Danny Parker has starred on Great British Menu and quit the Michelinstarred House of Tides just a few miles away in the heart of Newcastle upon Tyne to take on the challenge of providing high-end food to match the setting of this stunningly beautiful boutique hotel. As well as an a la carte restaurant he’s in overall charge of the food for everything from weddings and private parties to afternoon teas, bar snacks, breakfast and room service. It’s a very different operation and one he’s just loving. “There were a few raised eyebrows when I gave up a Michelin-starred restaurant that had won so much acclaim and so many awards so quickly,” Danny told me when we met for a coffee ahead of a busy Saturday night dinner service. “But I wanted a new challenge and, unlike many chefs, I love a good spreadsheet. To be put in overall charge of the food side of a busy hotel with so much going on, and knowing you have the backing of very supportive owners who are committed to raising standards, convinced me. It wasn’t an easy decision but I am very happy to be here.”

And who wouldn’t be? From the very first impression this former 19th century mansion in a fabulous leafy setting certainly has the wow factor. It’s a beautiful building, tastefully renovated, with oak panelling at every turn, high ceilings, a real sense of history and modern touches where you really want them. All the hotel rooms have been recently refurbished and are positively oozing with low key decadence. Thick curtains, velvet armchairs, pot plants and glossy magazines make for a luxuriously warm welcome with views of the Dene, garden or rooftops. This is a house with history – it was

Head chef Danny Parker

built as a family home for Sir Andrew Noble, a partner in Victorian industrialist Lord Armstrong’s engineering works. Now the battlements and chimneys give the outside a mini-epic feel while inside this arts and crafts building the fireplaces and highly polished floorboards are more akin to a rather lovely private members’ club – albeit one where snootiness has been replaced by old-fashioned Geordie good cheer. Jesmond Dene House is Newcastle’s only independently-owned boutique hotel and as well as sitting snugly in its own grounds the Dene itself is classic strolling territory, beloved of local families for dog walks and picnics. There’s a waterfall, a petting zoo and the stunning iron Armstrong Bridge which offers grand views of the city and hosts popular food markets and art displays. Despite seeming to occupy its own little world, Jesmond Dene House is only a few minutes from Newcastle city centre, making it the perfect location for either a city break or a base to explore the spectacular sandy beaches and castles of the Northumbrian coastline. But let’s end as we began, with food. The cooking is as assured as you’d expect with one of the North East’s top chefs at the helm. Local venison and oysters really hit the spot, and the wine list caters for connoisseurs and high rollers but not exclusively so – there are excellent choices to match most wallets. Since my stay in early spring they’ve had a bit of a refurb in the dining room and Danny has launched a new menu. I can’t think of a better reason to come back. www.jesmonddenehouse.co.uk

or years I’ve been saying I need to see more of my own country. Forever choosing to jet off far and wide across the globe, spending a fortune on taxis, flights, luggage allowances and losing money through dodgy exchange rates, staying local has always seemed the smarter option, yet for some reason I could never convince myself to choose home over away. Finally though, after months of my partner trying to persuade me to visit the Lake District, I gave in and booked us a weekend away in Ambleside, a small town on the edge of Lake Windermere. I’ve heard countless times from myriad people that it’s not about the destination, but the journey. On some occasions I’ve agreed, but as I pulled up to The Waterhead Hotel after a three-hour drive, I couldn’t have disagreed more. I knew we were staying at a lakeside hotel, but I didn’t expect it to be as close to the water as it was, and after a quick and easy check-in, we headed up to our room and found ourselves completely awestruck. We’d booked a Luxury Lake View Room, and were stunned by the unobstructed views across Lake Windermere that greeted us through our large bay window. The room in general was generous in size, and the super-king bed was made for a good night’s sleep. Contemporary yet still traditional, it had ties to local artists and businesses throughout, with the complimentary locally distilled gin was a real bonus. After hurriedly unpacking our things we headed down for a quick walk along the lakefront before returning for dinner

F

The Waterhead, Ambleside

at the hotel’s Bar & Grill Restaurant. Our starters were served as the sun began to set over the lake, with hot and spicy chicken wings for me (£7.50) and a poached duck egg with air-dried ham (£7.50) for my other half. It had been hours since we’d stopped mid-journey for a bite to eat in Skipton so it didn’t

take us long to devour the delicious dishes, and before we knew it we were presented with our main courses. The braised blade of beef (£19) was full of flavour, and served with mashed potato, seasonal veg and a red wine jus it was a hearty, homely meal. Ben’s main of a 6oz venison haunch steak (£21) didn’t disappoint either, and we both headed up to our room with full stomachs, falling asleep within minutes of laying our heads on the hotel’s incredibly comfortable pillows. Our weekend was pure relaxation from start to finish. Quick walks into Ambleside’s idyllic village-like centre, browsing their independent shops and stopping for coffee in quaint cafes. Even the hike up Helvellyn Mountain, though tiring at first, was serene as we walked up above the clouds, looking down at Thirlmere Lake and the other peaks, cliffs and waterfalls surrounding us. It was the break we didn’t know we needed, and through gritted teeth I vowed to listen to Ben the next time he suggests a vacation spot.

Cutting to the heart of the matter THROUGH HER WORK WITH CITY HEARTS, CLAIRE JENNINGS’ HAIRDRESSING SKILLS ARE GIVING VICTIMS OF HUMAN TRAFFICKING AND MODERN SLAVERY A NEW CONFIDENCE.

hairdresser for 34 years, Claire Jennings is used to seeing women change before her eyes. But now the transformations she witnesses go much deeper. The mum of two from Sheffield is helping to restore the self-esteem of women rescued from trafficking and modern slavery. She is a volunteer with the Sheffieldheadquartered charity City Hearts one day a week. Every Monday she arrives with scissors, brushes, hairdryers and curlers to find a queue of women from the charity’s safe houses waiting for her. “When I first meet them they can’t make eye contact with me. They have no confidence and feel like shadows of the women they once were, but they put their trust in me,” said Claire. “Usually their hair is long and in very bad condition. I try to get around the language difference to find out what style they want me to do – it’s important they feel in control. And at the end, when they look in the mirror, they light up. It’s as if they change as a person in front of my eyes. “Women from all walks of life feel happier about themselves after a haircut. But for women rescued from trafficking, the experience makes them feel feminine again. A new image even signals a new direction for their lives.” Added Claire: “Some have become regular clients. One, who is in her forties and from Eastern Europe, couldn’t make eye contact with anyone when I first met her. She seemed really depressed. She hugged me tight afterwards. She often comes for haircuts and every time I see her she is happier.” Claire applied to become a City Hearts volunteer nine months ago, and found her niche by using the hairdressing skills she honed during a career with Toni & Guy. After starting at 15 as a Saturday girl at Sweeney’s in Castle Market, Claire was a stylist with Sheffield’s John Taylor salon until Toni & Guy arrived in the city. She became a trainer and assistant manager and then spent four years with the company’s artistic team in London and Manchester. But at the height of her career, she decided to walk away. “I had money, a nice home and lifestyle,” she explains. “But when my mum got seriously ill I reassessed my life and decided to do something more worthwhile. I looked after mum, then went to India to work with a project caring for street children.”

A

“The women have grown to trust me and just by spending time with them, I’m helping them. I loved being a hairdresser but volunteering is the most rewarding thing I’ve ever done.”

Claire visited the charity twice and fundraised to provide a teacher. Two years later, when the children got into mainstream school she bought them uniforms. Claire also raised £1,500 to enable a seven-year-old girl to have surgery on her twisted feet, which enabled her to walk. She approached City Hearts after her experiences in India heightened her awareness of human trafficking, and also now volunteers at one of the charity’s safe houses. “It’s so rewarding. The women have grown to trust me and just by spending time with them, I’m helping them. I loved being a hairdresser but volunteering is the most rewarding thing

I’ve ever done. Now I can combine both. During National Volunteering Week I’d urge anyone to consider giving their time to help others.” City Hearts launched in Sheffield in 2005 to help people whose lives have been torn apart by modern slavery, and now has offices in Scotland and the North West and East of England. It has worked with 3,000 men, women and children. The charity is appealing for more people to join its team of 33 Sheffield volunteers who assist at its dropin centres and female, male and family safe houses. PAUL SMITH / Moonlight Textiles Type of business.

Maker, supplier and installer of bespoke soft furnishings, curtains, tracks, poles and blinds. What is your role in your company?

Managing director. How did you end up in this type of business?

I helped in the family party-planning business whilst at college. By the time I’d finished my studies the business had progressed onto selling ready-made curtains, and it was naturally assumed that I’d join the business full-time. Fast-forward over 30 years and we now specialise in all aspects of made-tomeasure soft furnishings, curtains, blinds, tracking and related products. Why is it important to seek out the best possible advice?

Soft furnishings and tracking can be a major purchase and quite technical at times, it could be an expensive exercise to get it wrong. Companies like ours are experienced in advising on suitable

fabrics and finishes, taking responsibility for the correct measurements and managing the professional making and installation of the end product. What specific expertise can you offer our readers?

Many of the Moonlight team have been with us for more than 20 years and have a wealth of experience in the trade. We can therefore offer qualified, informed advice to our customers in store or within their home. We are not fazed by specialist products like bay poles, decorative metal bay tracks, motorised products and blinds. We are unique in the fact that we have our own in-house workroom on the premises, something that we are particularly proud of. Our contract division has been established almost 30 years advising on, and providing the very latest in heavy commercial applications, cubicle rails, specialist anti-ligature systems, flameretardant fabrics and blinds. When it comes to bespoke products of any type, I’d always advise that you rely on the experts to provide a quality finish and service.

Any future developments you would like to tell us about?

We are constantly improving our workroom facilities and are looking to invest in new members wanting to join our team. It is paramount that we retain the control and uniqueness of producing our bespoke made products in-house and on the premises. Motorisation of blinds and curtain tracking has become particularly popular and is regularly requested after. It is important that we keep abreast of the fast paced changes in technology affecting this aspect of our industry – we always have done and will always endeavour to in the future.

Installation of timber and timber alternative windows and doors. What is your role in your company?

I offer design support for our clients when considering window or door replacement. How did you end up in this type of business?

My husband Chris has worked in this industry since he was 14 years old. After 30+ years of working in the industry, it felt right for us to work together in our own business, which we began in 2009 as Prestige Window Systems. Chris and his fitters have over 80 years of experience between them, which is important when you’re working on older properties. Why is it important to seek out the best possible advice in your particular line of work?

Clients need the right information to make an informed choice and all too often I’m asked to visit clients who have chosen what they felt was a good

product, only to find five or six years down the line, the windows are letting in water, expanding/contracting and worse than that, rotting. In our showroom you can see a selection of full-size, fully-finished working frames to gauge the quality of manufacture for yourselves, and this gives clients a benchmark to compare against others in the market. What specific expertise can you offer our readers?

We work on a variety of properties, from modern constructions to Grade II listed, and everything in between. We’re

Any future developments for yourself or your business that you would like to tell us about?

We relocated our business to Ecclesall Road in 2016 following seven years of trading in the south east of the city. This move has enabled us to reach far more local clients and its fair to say we’re now well established in this part of the city. “With ten years running our own business, we’re now planning a move to larger premises close to our current showroom providing more space to showcase a greater range of products. “It’s a positive outlook for Timber Windows of Sheffield with a future we’re excited to be sharing with the great clients we’ve met over the last ten years.

A new exercise class has started at Ranmoor Parish centre on Thursday’s at 5.15 pm, called Transform Pain. This is aimed at people with painful conditions, but who want to exercise. The group is led by a physiotherapist, with the goal of increasing function and reducing pain.

A Clinic You Can Trust… “Six months ago I suffered a stroke which left my left arm and leg disabled. I received no meaningful physiotherapy to my arm until recently when I attended The Hallamshire Physiotherapy Clinic. In just a few sessions of dedicated expert physiotherapy my arm is already responding and I feel much more confident for the future.” – Mike Higgins “As a result of a car crash I got whiplash which gave me pins and needles down my arm. Over a series of appointments Steve has managed to cure the pins and needles and my neck is now free again. I can’t thank him enough. I would have no hesitation in recommending Hallamshire Physiotherapy. Truly Exceptional.” – Carol B

Improved wellbeing WHY SUMMERTIME IS A SPECIAL SEASON FOR RESIDENTS OF ONE SHEFFIELD CARE HOME. ummertime is special for so many reasons – longer days, warm weather, flowers in bloom – but one Sheffield care home has identified just how important the summer is in the ongoing care and wellbeing of their residents. Staff at The Porterbrook, which offers residential, dementia and respite care, have tailored their full and varied events programme to fully take advantage of all the benefits the summer season has to offer. Being able to take activities outside brings lots of proven health benefits for older people such as increased vitamin D levels, exercise, and good fresh air. These in turn can help lower stress levels, increase appetite and enable better sleep. Many of the residents at The Proterbrook, in Tapton Crescent Road in Crosspool, suffer from varying degrees of dementia, and the great outdoors can bring a range of multi-sensory experiences which are particularly helpful in the support of dementia sufferers. The Porterbrook care home manager Sheilagh Sweeney said:

S

“The change that comes over our residents at this time of year is notable, and we make sure we make the most of it. We’ve been planning lots of lovely summertime activities like our ever-popular gardening club, and visits to local gardens. Even simple things like making sure windows are open wide or having meals out of doors can make a real difference. “Just by being outside and hearing the birds or the wind in the trees, feeling the sun on the skin, the smell of roses, lavender or fresh cut grass as well as seeing plants and flowers can be a completely immersive sensory experience helping evoke memories of times gone by, lifting the spirits and providing a sense of calm.” For more information call Sheilagh on 0114 266 0808, email info@theporterbrookcare.com or visit www.theporterbrookcare.com

WHERE THE SMALL DETAILS MAKE ALL THE DIFFERENCE From the moment you walk into The Porterbrook, you’ll find it’s unlike any other care home. ROAD TEST

Above and beyond RHIANA HUGHES JUMPS BEHIND THE WHEEL OF THE PORSCHE CAYENNE COUPE. hen I bought my first car at 19, I was still living at home and still learning to drive. Holding only a provisional licence, I missed out on the excitement of test driving cars to find out which would be the perfect fit for me, leaving the decision making up to my parents who both jumped at the chance to take a few new cars for a spin. Years later, and I’m making up for lost time. Though I myself can only dream of owning one of the cars on sale at Silverleaf, I wasn’t going to pass up the opportunity to get behind the wheel of their stunning new cars. Silverleaf Sports & Prestige Cars, as the name suggests, specialise in high quality and reputable cars from manufacturers such as Porsche, Maserati, Bentley, Audi, Land Rover, Aston Martin and more. They pride themselves on preparing their cars to the very highest standard, ensuring each car is rigorously detailed and presented in the best possible condition, and as I drove through the gates of their Newhall Road showroom I was greeted by line of immaculate vehicles – if only I could’ve driven them all. I was at Silverleaf to test drive the new Porsche Cayenne Coupe, and it wasn’t hard to spot amongst the showroom’s other cars, as its Lava Orange exterior doesn’t exactly blend in. I must admit that at first I was slightly nervous that the colour of the car would be screaming ‘look at me!’, but I soon realised that I was more than happy for people to think I was the owner of such a fantastic car. As I climbed in, I was immediately grateful that Silverleaf ’s Paul Nicholson was coming along for the ride, as without him I’d probably have spent a good half hour still parked up on the forecourt. Paul helped me readjust my seat, gave me quick tips on how to perfectly position the mirrors, and perhaps most importantly, how to start the car… While I’m used to hopping into my car and popping the key into the ignition, with the Porsche Cayenne Coupe, you can keep your key safe and sound in your bag while starting the car

with what very closely resembles the traditional set up. As the engine fired up, I quickly got to grips with the automatic gearbox and set off on a surprisingly smooth ride. For such a big car, I didn’t feel like I was taking over the road, and the head up display made it easy to keep track of my speed, which picked up quickly and easily without all the faff of having to move through the gears. The sound coming from the car’s Bose surround system was just as smooth as the ride, and the longer I sat behind the The showroom at Newhall Road

wheel, the more I sank into the comfortable black leather seat. Pulling back into the forecourt, I wished I could turn around and keep the Porsche for myself, but I know that the team at Silverleaf will find it the perfect owner. Sporty new look PHOEBE SEYMOUR SENSES AN AIR OF SOPHISTICATION ABOUT THE NEW MG3. ith sporty, stylish and distinctive looks, MG’s range of cars has captured the hearts of countless admirers going back over nearly 100 years. The designs may have changed considerably over the decades, but when you get behind the wheel of a modern MG, it’s clear that the iconic octagonal badge still represents something extra special. This certainly proved to be the case when I booked in for a test drive at Eric Stead in Ecclesfield to take the new MG3 for a spin. Like the MG itself, Eric Stead has a long and established reputation. It is one of the oldest motor dealerships in the area, having opened in 1962. As such, all of the staff at this family-run business have a great depth of knowledge about the models on offer. You’ll even find a couple of gorgeous vintage MGs when you visit their showroom. Sales executive, Dave Hall, handed over the keys before familiarising me with the new features inside. I’d been given the Exclusive MG3 in Ruby Red, which comes with all the same features as the Explore and Excite models in the range, plus some added extras including sports seats, cruise control, reversing camera with dynamic guide lines, Apple

CarPlay™ and DAB radio with USB connection for smart phones. Though a truly modern car, from its LED lights to its adherence to the Euro 6 Emissions standards, there is an element of simplicity that I really liked. The controls are straight forward and I breathed a sigh of relief to see that the handbrake was in fact a handbrake and not a button. Before I knew it, I was zipping down the road easily weaving between parked cars and effortlessly climbing through

the gears. Though compact on the outside, this car is something of a Tardis, with plenty of leg room in the back and a spacious boot on the inside. With a high and comfortable seats, it would be perfect for a long drive too. Now driving down Stocksbridge Bypass, I was able to really put my foot down. And even at high speeds it’s a smooth, and yes, really fun drive. Once I’d reached the Langsett Barn carpark, I was able to try out the parking assist technology, with its helpful guidelines and beep as I neared the curb, before returning. I was sad to give the keys back to Dave, and when he asked how it had gone, I couldn’t help smiling from ear to ear. The new MG3 did exactly as it had promised; it had given me an enjoyable drive in a stylish (inside and out) car. And with zero percent finance, the option to spread repayments over five years with a 20 per cent deposit and a seven-year warranty, I know many people will learn to love this car. Does your marital status affect your will? ANNE ROGERS, HEAD OF THE PRIVATE CLIENT TEAM AT GRAYSONS, DISCUSSES THE DIFFERENT IMPLICATIONS. ere at Graysons, we strongly believe that you should make a will. It’s the only way you can control who inherits your estate when you die. However, many people think that once their will is written – that is it, they don’t need to think about it again. But, as lives change, and we go through marriage, divorce, cohabitation or separation, wills are affected and need to be updated.

H

Marriage

When you marry or enter a civil partnership, any existing will is automatically revoked. You will, therefore, have no will and your estate will be distributed according to the rules of intestacy if you die. In this situation, your spouse or civil partner will only inherit all of your estate if you don’t have children, in which case your spouse or civil partner will inherit the first £250,000, half of the remaining estate will be shared by your children, with the remainder going to your spouse or civil partner. This may not be what you want, so to ensure your estate is distributed exactly how you want it to be – and to take care of issues such as who will administer your estate (your executors) and who will be guardians/trustees for your children, you need to make a new will. You also can make a valid will in anticipation of marrying. If you chose not to bequeath anything to your spouse or civil partner, they may still have a claim on your estate under

the Inheritance (Provision for Family and Dependants) Act 1975. You should take legal advice before making a will that disinherits your spouse or civil partner. Divorce

If you divorce or dissolve a civil partnership, you may think that your will becomes invalid – but it doesn’t. In fact, your will is still valid, but your ex is treated as if he/she had died on the date of your decree absolute. This means that if you die after your divorce, without changing your will, they will not inherit any of your estate and cannot be an executor, guardian or trustee – whether you wanted this or not. If you have not made a will when you die, the rules of intestacy will apply and your ex will get nothing. If you want to ensure that your children’s other parent is responsible for dealing with a trust fund set up for your children’s benefit, for example, you need to make a new will immediately after divorce or dissolution of a civil partnership and specify this. You can still leave all or part of your estate to your ex when you die, as long as it is specified in a new will. If you don’t leave them anything in your will, and they relied upon you financially, they may be able to make a claim on your estate under the Inheritance Act.

you die without changing it, your spouse or civil partner will inherit whatever your existing will dictates. If you have no will, they will inherit according to the rules of intestacy (as in marriage above). This is probably not what most separated couples would want. Co-habitation

If you live with your partner but are not married or in a civil partnership – your partner can only inherit if you have a will that specifies such. Remember – without a will, your partner could become homeless if they do not own your home jointly as joint tenants. Even if they do own the property jointly as tenants in common, your share would be distributed in accordance with the rules of intestacy if you die, so your partner may not end up owning the whole property. You can find out much more about making a will and what happens when you don’t have one on our website or contact our experts now for a confidential discussion. New appointments

New look for Loadhog

Keebles continues to build on its expansion with two new appointments in the firm’s commercial property team. Based in Sheffield, newly qualified solicitors Kate Langley and Louise Ward have joined the 25-strong team after successfully training with Keebles, one of the county’s largest law firms. With offices also in offices in Leeds and Doncaster, Keebles is regarded as a key player by the Legal 500 and Chambers guides. The Legal 500 2018/19 guide describes the commercial property department as combining ‘excellent service levels’ with a ‘personable approach’ making it ‘a key firm for clients in the region’. The team includes five partners and counts Harworth Group, Coalfields Regeneration Trust, St Pauls Developments, Sheffield Business Park Limited and Crossbow Investments among its clients.

Loadhog, the multi award-winning packaging manufacturer, has revealed new branding to emphasise its constant determination to drive innovation in returnable packaging. The Sheffield-based employee-owned manufacturer is committed to designing, developing and manufacturing new sustainable packaging and supply chain solutions which save companies valuable time, money and labour. The new branding not only includes a new logo but also the Hogmark™, which gives Loadhog its own symbolic reference to industry standard and innovation in packaging. Like a hallmark is stamped on articles of gold, silver and platinum to certify its purity, the Hogmark™ will be stamped on Loadhog products to symbolise quality, innovation and environmentally friendly packaging. Jake Charlton, Loadhog’s marketing manager, said: “Loadhog has come a long way since its birth in 2003 and has now reached a point when the company feels its original branding no longer fully reflects what the business is about. “We are firmly committed to reducing logistics and packaging waste and known for genuine innovation in manufacturing products which provide benefits throughout the supply chain. The new branding is clean, modern and befits the quality embedded within the packaging we design.”

Outstanding achievement Fame Tate, the owner of Stanedge Golf Club near Chesterfield and PGA Professional, won the Outstanding Achievement Award at The English Women’s Awards – North. Fame was nominated in this category for her achievements over the past six to eight months in taking a huge risk in acquiring Stanedge Golf Club and bringing it back from the edge of closure and extinction. Inspiring women were awarded at a glamorous event celebrating female successes in Manchester. The Awards honoured the talent and hard work of female professionals and entrepreneurs across the region. Fame took over Stanedge Golf Club in March 2019 and has totally transformed the place from a run-down clubhouse and golf course to a thriving facility which now see over 50 players of all ages and gender coming to the club on Wednesday nights for the clubs 6@6 golf league. Fame said: “The resurrection of Stanedge Golf Club has not been easy, it really has been a monumental effort by many people who put many unsociable hours into making the club a place people now want to visit and enjoy being at the club. “Since we acquired the club in February we have attracted over 80 new members and many visitors in response to our various offers, with different groups getting involved in our coaching and learn to play offers.” 138 www.sheffieldvibe.com

He worked for four years in Berlin developing residential and masterplan schemes, returning to the UK to join Sheppard Robson and lead the first residential scheme for the practice where he was also responsible for managing teams on a series of large successful commercial projects. Self Architects and White Design have embarked on an ambitious five-year growth strategy. Following a move last year to larger premises the practice recently appointed a new BIM Manager and has a promising schedule of major work on the drawing board.
