PREVIEW
MAY 2016
www.ffb-online.co.uk
PREVIEW ports enthusiasts in their millions have had their eyes trained on Sheffield over the last few weeks for the World Snooker Championships. And with television cameras focused firmly on the action inside the Crucible, apart from the occasional interview against the picturesque backdrop of the Winter Gardens, this annual event can do us nothing but good.
S
But for the green baize obsessives who make an annual pilgrimage, and take time out to stretch their legs in other areas of the city, one question must surely arise year after year: when are they going to rebuild this place? This month in First For Business, consultant editor Andy Waple looks at the ongoing attempts to breathe new life into our city centre, and the apparent stagnation that has left some cynics suggesting that there is more chance of Steve Davis renouncing his retirement and making a comeback at the Crucible than seeing any progress on the various attempts to revitalise the city’s shopping areas. Not everyone shares this negative outlook, and this spring has seen signs of hope with the council announcing that full demolition of the Grosvnor House Hotel block will take place before summer in preparation for the new Sheffield Retail Quarter.
And one area where development is going Ahead full swing is New Era Square – a £65m 20-storey mixed leisure, commercial and residential development bringing new life in the area between London Road and Bramall Lane. Also in First For Business this month, chief feature writer Julia Farmer looks at the different way Learning at Work Week 2016 can benefit employers by encouraging employees to learn something new. We also look at intellectual property, something that every business owns – whether they realise it or not.You may have a trademark, patent, design or something protected by copyright but it is important to know the difference. These intangible assets add value to your business and can give you competitive edge. Big changes have been taking place in an area close to the heart of all employees and employers – company pensions. With the final tier of smaller SMEs set to offer their staff company pensions this year, we look at the changes and the options available. Our business profile this month looks at a Sheffield business that has moved to a new home after 29 years – the Natural Bed Company. The business was started back in 1974 by Peter Bennion, a research
CHRIS WILSON, EDITOR chemist who wanted a more creative role and spotted an opportunity with the craze for water beds. It may have been hippy idealism that led him to name his first Sheffield shops after Bob Dylan albums – remember Freewheelin’ on Oakbrook Road or Bringing It All Back Home on Glossop Road? But it was sharp business sense that made Peter and business partner Kay Wallace spot the need for a website in the early 1990s for the company, which was renamed Natural Bed Company in 2000 and has held the Made in Sheffield mark since 2011. They now have a new 3,000sq ft. showroom on Fitzwilliam Street for their bed collection, mattresses, furniture and homewares. With another tricky question for our Dream Team to tackle and a special focus on business growth, that is just a taste of what’s inside First For Business this month. orld Snooker at the Crucible continues to provide great publicity for Sheffield but it does bring the terrible condition of the city centre into sharp focus.

The thousands of people who flock to the city each year to watch one of sport’s greatest showcases must wonder what has happened – and the answer of course, is nothing. There have been many false dawns surrounding the ill-fated £480million retail quarter and some might suggest there is more chance of Steve Davis making a comeback at the Crucible next year than there is of seeing any progress on the shopping front. The global economic crisis put paid to the Sevenstone scheme and renewed attempts to revive a revised scheme have stalled. This spring has at least shown a sign of hope with the council announcing that full demolition of the Grosvenor House Hotel block is to start before the summer, in preparation, it says, for a start to construction of a new retail, commercial, leisure and residential scheme, known as the Sheffield Retail Quarter. Tenants in the building have been issued with notification to leave the building within three months to enable works to begin. Asbestos stripping of the building is now nearing completion after several weeks of work on site. The council says, once more, that it is close to finalising discussions with a major blue chip company to occupy the first phase of the quarter, likely to be offices and retail, on the site of the crumbling hotel block. It adds it has been “working closely” with retailers such as John Lewis, who welcome the plans. Simon Green, executive director at the council, said: “We are making real progress and remain on course to deliver the first phases of the SRQ by 2019. People will see a visible start to preparatory demolition works of the Grosvenor block within three months after all the asbestos has been removed. We are in active conversations with John Lewis and expect to announce the first phase of the SRQ very shortly involving retail and a major blue chip company. “This is a hugely complex scheme but we are working hard to deliver this project which is so important for the future of the city.”
8
Over the coming months work will be undertaken to refine the design for the proposed scheme, which will be shared with the public as part of further consultation. Plans for the revised retail quarter have been dogged with delays and the city remains the last major city centre in the country without a significant retail development, which the council says is a positive when it comes to trying to attract private sector investment. Delays have been blamed on the complexities of the project, including negotiations to secure the first phase of the quarter with retail and offices for a ‘major blue chip company’, purchasing land back from Sevenstone developer Hammerson and the legal process of moving tenants ahead of demolition. There have also been objections from the property company that owns large parts of The Moor. Aberdeen Asset Management, expressed concerns about the outline plan for the scheme and said it had worries about the overall amount of retail development proposed; the scale of some of the planned ‘blocks’ which the quarter will be divided into; and the way in which The Moor will link up with Barker’s Pool, a revamped Charter Square and an extended Fargate. The Moor is undergoing a £100million redevelopment project involving some new retail units – including a flagship Primark store – and a ‘leisure hub’ featuring a cinema and restaurants.
“NEW ERA SQUARE – A 20-STOREY LEISURE, COMMERCIAL AND RESIDENTIAL DEVELOPMENT – IS BRINGING NEW LIFE TO THE AREA BETWEEN LONDON ROAD AND BRAMALL LANE.”

AGENDA
The proposed New Era Square development
Developers said they were concerned about how the Retail Quarter plans would integrate with their own project. Council deputy leader Leigh Bramall said delays were inevitable in such a complex scheme but insisted the retail quarter project was moving in the right direction. He said: “This is about our city working together to forge the future. It is a long process, but it is important to get it right for generations to come.” Meanwhile cranes are on the horizon near the bottom of The Moor where work on a £65million mixed-used development is in full swing.
but are at pains to avoid it being labelled “Chinatown.” Work is well underway to complete the foundations for the development, which is to include retail units, food and drink outlets on the ground floor, leading out to an open-air square for events. The existing KH oriental supermarket, established 40 years ago, will be redesigned and upgraded to the new large supermarket premises and will offer new range of products from all over the world.
New Era Square – a 20-storey leisure, commercial and residential development – is bringing new life to the area between London Road and Bramall Lane.
On the first floor there will be office space for professional service businesses, an exhibition hall and a Sheffield City Region China Business Incubator chaired by Richard Caborn to enhance enterprise and trade links between China and the UK.
New Era Development (UK) Ltd, the Sheffield-based company behind the plans, say it is creating “a cosmopolitan, international, multi-cultural focal point,”
Around 700 student accommodation units, predominantly 30sq m studio rooms, plus micro-flats and student cluster flats will occupy other areas.
Jerry Cheung, managing director at New Era Development (UK) Ltd, said: “We have been working incredibly hard behind the scenes for many years to see our vision come to life. “New Era Square is a landmark development for Sheffield, the region and the UK. It represents substantial investment for the city and is set to create a cosmopolitan, urban destination, including the new public square, to bring people from across the whole community together. “We are very much looking forward to developing opportunities for businesses through our Sheffield City Region China Business Incubator, which has the potential to offer significant inward investment. This will offer a fantastic opportunity for any business looking to break into the Chinese market and viceversa for businesses based in China seeking a UK market entry through Sheffield.”

WATCHING SURGEONS AT WORK IS ALL PART OF THE JOB FOR B. BRAUN APPRENTICES.
MAKING THE CUT W
hat better way to understand the highly sophisticated equipment your company manufactures, than to see it in operation? Apprentices at Chapeltown-based B. Braun Medical have done exactly that – in the most literal sense. Young trainees at the global giant’s head office have gowned up in scrubs and stepped into operating theatres to watch surgeons in action. They witnessed intricate keyhole procedures being performed using B. Braun’s high-tech Einstein Vision System, which gives the surgeon a 3D image of his instruments as he works inside a patient’s body. One of the apprentices had actually helped build the Einstein Vision system, which launched in 2015 and is now in use in 212 hospitals worldwide, including Sheffield’s Northern General. “To see it in operation was a fascinating experience for him,” said a B. Braun spokesperson. The company believes going that extra mile for its apprentices reaps big rewards for a business employing 1,200 across three companies in the UK, and where staff loyalty is
so high that less than four per cent leave. “Apprentices are so important to the company because we need new blood. To stay ahead of the competition we need to invest in and develop the next generation of talent,” said Lisa Burns, head of B Braun UK Group’s HR. “But equally apprentices are our fresh eyes and ears. They bring a fresh perspective and ideas which lead to us finding new and innovative approaches and we have implemented many of them.” The company currently has six apprentices on a three-each programme, all recruited via The Source Skills Academy. Like previous apprentices, most of who are now permanent staff, the six will
work in three key areas of the business. “This gives them a real understanding of how departments work and how they interact with each other, an opportunity most employees don’t get. Often they see something that works well in one department which isn’t being implemented in another,” explained Lisa. To ensure new apprentices settle in, B. Braun runs a Buddy Scheme with apprentices from previous years acting as mentors, and an Apprenticeship Coordinator guides them through the basics of business etiquette so they fit into the workplace. “Investing in young talent enables you to create business-ready employees who understand your company and are loyal, committed and able to make a significant contribution to your current and future plans,” added Lisa. “The Source was a natural pairing for us. It is a fellow gold-accredited Investors In People associate for whom professionalism and high achievement is the norm. It understands the drivers that make a business successful.” To find out how apprentices can benefit your business, visit The Source’s website, www.thesourceacademy.co.uk or call 0114 263 6654.

TAP THAT POTENTIAL APPRENTICES MAKE A GREAT FIT TO PLUG THE DIGITAL SKILLS GAP.
O
ver a million small businesses in the UK do not have the skills to prosper in the digital era warns the UK’s digital skills charity Go.on UK. Could apprentices help to fill those gaps? The charity says that this can impact SMEs greatly. So much so that they could risk losing potential business because they can’t be found online be missing out on their share of the UK’s annual website sales of £193 billion. Filling those skills gaps is a real issue for some businesses but apprenticeships in social media, creative and digital marketing could be the answer. It doesn’t matter if your main business is in manufacturing, creative industries, retail or the service sector, it is clear that digital skills make the difference. Even businesses that need to be at the forefront with digital skills have seen how apprentices bring that added extra to their workforce. Aspiring film maker, Callum Crimes and creative media whizz,
would never get experience of in a classroom. It is an exciting place to learn and test your skills.” Callum chose to do an apprenticeship after finishing his A levels as a way into a career he wanted.
Abbie Davies are making a big impact at Cotyso, a studio offering photography, film and audio recording. They are learning while they earn and getting experience of a huge range of media production techniques from working in the studios and out on location. They recently worked on a project with Anna Ivanovic, the famous tennis star and despite being a bit star struck they delivered amazing coverage to satisfy 400,000 people at an event. Abbie told us how she is benefitting from her apprenticeship: “I didn’t want to go to university because I felt that getting experience in the industry would give me the edge for working in the media. Working at Cotyso and doing my apprenticeship with Learning Unlimited gives me the opportunity to learn and earn. The variety of projects I work on here is huge and I am doing things that I
“Doing this apprenticeship has helped me to improve practical industry skills like editing and filming techniques as well as becoming more confident. Working with clients gives you the chance to develop lots of different skills that I know will benefit me in the future.” It isn’t just the apprentices that are going from strength to strength at Cotyso. Stuart Leadbetter, owner of the company told us: “Getting the right apprentices in your business gives you the perfect combination. I have five working in my business at the moment and in every area they work in from business admin to creative and digital media, they bring fresh ideas and new skills that I just don’t have. “When it comes to social media it’s almost like it is a skill that is in their DNA. They bring that to the workplace and it gives me an added extra that pays dividends.” For more information about apprenticeships with Learning Unlimited call 0345 8501055 or visit www.learningunlimiteduk.com.

GOING FOR GROWTH LOOKING TO EXPAND YOUR BUSINESS? HERE ARE A FEW IDEAS TO START YOUR BUSINESS ON THE ROAD TO GROWTH TODAY.
INCREASE SALES
BOOST SKILLS
Look into ways that you may be able to increase sales, both to existing and new customers. This might include adding additional products or services – and this, in turn, could require new skills, more investment and more staff.
It is often said that companies struggle to find highly-skilled employees so why not train your existing workforce? Consider upskilling the staff you already have or investing in new, young talent in the form of an apprentice.
IMPROVE WHAT ALREADY EXISTS
INVEST FUNDS
Are there any ways you could improve the products and services you currently offer? Carry out research among existing customers to determine what else they need/want. Test any changes you are considering on your customers before you spend big money on things they don’t want.
LOOK INTO NEW MARKETS Even if you already have a loyal customer base, are there other markets you could try? The internet, social media and auction websites make it easier than ever to consider selling your goods overseas.
14
There are many ways of investing additional funds into your business, including bringing in new investors, obtaining bank finance, asset finance, invoice finance or crowdfunding, which is becoming an increasingly popular way for companies to finance new products or projects. There are plenty of companies and support organisations in the region
‘There are many sources of support in the region for new start-ups and businesses looking to grow.’
which can help companies to access finance, including Finance For Enterprise and Wilson Field.
BE ACTIVE ONLINE We’ve already mentioned using the internet to sell to customers overseas but there are many other benefits to being active online. Use social platforms such as Twitter, Facebook and YouTube to create brand awareness. It’s not necessarily about selling a product or service, but letting people know who you are.
USE A BUSINESS MENTOR Sometimes it can be difficult for business owners – particularly sole traders – to know where to turn to grow their business. Local councils can generally connect businesses to suitable mentors. There are many sources of support in the region for new start-ups and businesses looking to grow, including the Business & IP Centre based at Sheffield Library which can help companies with everything from IP and trademarks to social media marketing.

GROWTH
CJ SIGNS HAVE BUSINESS GROWTH WRAPPED! Husband and wife team Jason and Claire Bell have seen their vehicle wrapping business CJ Signs grow beyond expectations in the last 18 months. Claire believes there are many reasons for the unprecedented growth; as well as the increasing popularity of vehicle wrapping Claire and Jason have taken a proactive approach to developing the business.
JEWELLERY COMPANY RAISES £15,000 IN JUST 10 DAYS ON KICKSTARTER On 14 April an innovative Sheffield company hoping to take the jewellery world by storm launched a Kickstarter campaign to raise £15,000. Just ten days later Bailey of Sheffield had exceeded its target, with 185 backers pledging £15,456. The company has used Kickstarter to introduce the CABLE™ bracelet, offered with a more than lifetime guarantee and the opportunity to customise your bracelet through interchangeable beads, and a choice of colour options. Precision-engineered with professors at Sheffield Hallam, created at the city’s Portland Works – where the first Stainless Steel products were manufactured over 100 years ago – and hand-finished, pieces are not only innovative and covetable, but truly home-grown. And although it might sound like overnight success for the company, both the product and campaign have been a long time coming. Scott Bailey, founder, said: “It started
many years ago with lots of sketches and I then spent around five years researching, prototyping and making. The finished bracelet might look like a simple product but actually involves quite a lot of complicated design processes. “I spent about two years researching crowdfunding, specifically Kickstarter. For us as a fairly young company the Kickstarter community is the perfect platform to launch our first product. From a business point of view it is a really effective way of letting people know about the brand and at the same time it acts as a comprehensive market research exercise as we are able to interact and engage with our early supporters. “We feel really humble to have reached our fundraising target within 10 days. What I would say to other businesses considering using crowdfunding to start or grow their business is to do as much research as possible. We identified all the projects that we loved for their principles and spirit. We didn’t necessarily look for products similar to ours but sincere projects that presented themselves well and got their campaigns right. We tried to emulate the best bits of all of them.” All funds raised on Kickstarter will go to completing final prototypes, buying extra equipment for manufacturing and scaling up production – which includes hiring more people in the Sheffield area. See the campaign on Kickstarter at: http://bit.ly/BaileyofSheffield
Claire has become a regular networker at various business events and last year arranged an open day to coincide with the company’s move to larger premises. “It’s gone absolutely bonkers!” said Claire. “We were busy before but since taking active steps to raise the profile of the business we haven’t stopped. Orders for this last year were way up on the year before and turnover has increased dramatically.” The company’s solid reputation, resulting in word of mouth recommendations, could also be responsible for increased sales. “Vehicle wrapping is definitely becoming more and more popular and people want it doing well,” said Claire. “People see that we have the skills and the quality materials to do the job right and this has resulted in us attracting more customers.” Since it started in 2004, the company has secured a number of regular clients including Autoworld in Chesterfield and the Newell & Wright Group, based at Templeborough. CJ Signs also works with motor racing company Ginetta Cars and has wrapped vehicles for Sir Christopher Hoy and Rick Parfitt Jnr. MEET TWO OF THE BUSINESSES SUPPORTED BY TIM DANIELS… WATTS FOR TEA Peter and Michelle Lenton are both experienced food business managers and have successfully managed kitchens, restaurants and bars throughout the UK. They decided to set up a tea room and village shop in Grainthorpe, Lincolnshire, which had been without a village shop for some years after the old shop was sold and rezoned as a residential dwelling. Peter and Michelle had a vision; a tea room that would be warm and welcoming, providing a hub for the residents of Grainthorpe and neighbouring villages. They battled numerous obstacles but never gave up on their dream. Now, almost two years after starting their project, they are ready to welcome the public into their historic space. They are proud to sell fresh produce and
local goods within their shop and tea rooms. With the support of Finance For Enterprise they obtained £70,000 of funding to fulfil their dream and in doing so have created additional jobs for the local community and provided a social meeting point for residents. Commenting on the support from Finance For Enterprise, Michelle said: “Traditional lenders would not even discuss lending options with us and we thought we would have to give up on our
dream of turning our mill and coach house into a tea room that would become the soul of the village. Luckily, we met Tim Daniels from Finance For Enterprise. He was able to visualise what we wanted to achieve and came up with the finance to help us. Now the business is growing week by week and we are seeing the community spirit return to the village. Words cannot say how grateful we are.” www.wattsfortea.co.uk.

THINK AHEAD WILSON FIELD’S PHIL MEEKIN ADVISES THAT IF YOU’RE GOING FOR GROWTH, START MAKING FINANCIAL PLANS TODAY.
T
he last few weeks have seen some doom and gloom in the business world. One of the big stories has surrounded Tata steel, with significant concerns for the steel industry. There has also been talk about issues with global markets, particularly in relation to China’s economy. But, as usual, our region appears to be battling on. The EEF’s latest quarterly report on trends in UK manufacturing showed that Yorkshire and Humber was the most optimistic of all UK regions and expects the strongest output and order balances in England in the next three months. This confidence is justified; after all our region has a very strong manufacturing heritage and local business owners have long had a reputation for their can-do attitude. So, if businesses in the area are thinking growth, they also need to think investment; whether it be new machinery,
new plant, loading and handling equipment or haulage vehicles. But, equally important as hardware is having enough cash to fund expansion. And the hardest part for businesses can be knowing just how much cash they will need. If a business plans to increase sales by 10 per cent, for example, it doesn’t necessarily follow that they will need a 10 per cent increase in their overdraft – they might actually need a 30 per cent increase. No two situations are the same as it will always depend on the nature of the business, the terms of trade and so on. Many large, established businesses now use invoice finance to fund cash flow needs. At one point there was a tendency to view this option as a ‘lender of last resort’ but not so they days. As well as funding cash flow, invoice finance can also be used to finance imports, exports and stock. Significantly, invoice finance grows with the
business, unlike bank borrowing which must be renegotiated each time an increase is needed. So, turning back to capital outlay, that new CNC lathe, production line, 12-colour printer or haulage fleet all needs to be financed. Using asset finance can be a practical solution, spreading the cost over the anticipated life of the asset, either on or off-balance sheet. Numerous products are available which can help businesses of all types and sizes fulfil growth plans. With growth may come a need to move to larger premises or to extend, so businesses may also choose to consider commercial mortgages or refinance. Growth is excellent news for businesses and it is pleasing to see optimism high in the region right now. But growth can be challenging and the secret to success is good planning – so start planning today.

2016 is a big year for the Regional Magazine Company (RMC) as we launch our 30th anniversary celebrations - and we are looking for other businesses who have managed to stand the test of time to join in the fun. Our story started way back in 1986 when the first copy of our first magazine, Westside, was published. Since then, as anyone who has been in business the same length of time will know, there have been good times as well as upsets, recessions and major changes across the world. So, if you also set up your business in the year of 1986, congratulations on standing the test of time - and here’s a birthday gift from RMC for you. PROTECT YOUR BUSINESS FROM THE START WHETHER YOU ARE IN THE EARLY STAGES OR WANT TO TAKE AN ESTABLISHED BUSINESS TO THE NEXT LEVEL, THE BUSINESS & INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY CENTRE SHEFFIELD SHOULD BE YOUR FIRST POINT OF CALL …
A
s a vital resource for entrepreneurs, innovators and business start-ups, BIPC Sheffield is the go-to hub for information on intellectual property which is made up of four key areas; copyright, trade marks, patents and registered design. It also provides the ideal tools to research your business with a range of business databases, trade publications, business literature and guides. The centre offers a wide range of workshops, events and networking opportunities tailored to help you understand all you need to know about protecting your business idea from the very start. Joyce Gray, BIPC Sheffield development officer, said: “We see many different business types from a wide range of sectors from across the Sheffield City Region. It’s vital that businesses understand their intellectual property and how it fits into their business plan. With our professional help, a client can turn their idea into a successful business.”
HELPING DOT COTTON CRAFTS FIND ITS WAY… Until one year ago Rachel Cotton enjoyed making cards and gifts, simply because she ‘has always liked making things’. But with support from BIPC she has set up a business, sells her products at selected outlets in the city, runs workshops and is seeing her ideas turn into a full brand. It was at MADE:The Entrepreneur Festival, in October 2015, that she met Emma Taylor, who had just taken up the role of BIPC’s outreach coordinator and who suggested that BIPC’s services would be ideal for Rachel.
“I liked playing around with ideas and making things – I’d always made cards for friends’ birthdays – but I hadn’t really thought that I could turn it into a business and potentially employ people,” said Rachel. “I really hit it off with Emma and it wasn’t long until we were discussing business ideas. The business name came from my university days when my email address of ‘rachel.cotton@...’ was read aloud, earning me the nickname of Dot Cotton! “BIPC helped me to carry out research into intellectual property and guided me in setting up the business – including many areas I wouldn’t have known about. “I’ve attended a First Steps to Marketing session which taught me crucial tips I needed to know about social media. Many of my followers on Twitter have been a result of what I learnt. Emma taught me about key hashtags for crafting companies and ‘crafting hours’ which are specific times for crafting companies to post updates. I now Tweet several times a day, attract new followers every day and have even been able to teach other makers about the power of social media in marketing.
“In support of the Sheffield Year of Making with BIPC’s ‘How to Make it!’ campaign, I attended several ‘Makers’ events and met some really inspiring people through networking. BIPC is now helping me to set up my own Eventbrite listings so it’s easier for me to publicise events and take online bookings.” Rachel sells her cards, jewellery and botanical inspired gifts at Sheffield Maker’s Shop in the Winter Gardens, All Good Stuff at Butcher Works, where she volunteers as workshop coordinator, Moss & Clover florists at Nether Edge, where she also works, and at craft markets. She is currently setting up Crafting Circle which will incorporate Dot Cotton Crafts and provide a platform for her to work with other makers. BIPC’s Emma Taylor said: “Rachel is an excellent ambassador for BIPC as she sums up perfectly what the centre is all about. With our support Rachel has turned her ideas into a unique, inspiring business. She has dipped in and out of BIPC when she needs support on various issues and that is exactly what we are here for.”

PENSIONS
MAY 2016
www.ffb-online.co.uk
ARE YOU READY? IS YOUR BUSINESS PREPARED FOR AUTO ENROLMENT?
F
igures released by The Pensions Regulator in March revealed that more than six million workers had begun saving into a workplace pension as a result of automatic enrolment. More than 100,000 employers have now automatically enrolled staff into a workplace pension, including some of the country’s largest employers, small employers and micro employers. The first workers were automatically enrolled into pension schemes in 2012 starting with the largest employers. The policy was introduced to address under-saving with millions not putting aside enough for retirement, and only one in three private sector workers paying into a workplace pension. Minister for Pensions, Baroness Ros Altmann, said: “It is brilliant to see so many millions of people automatically enrolling into a workplace pension. So far it has been those working for big firms, now the challenge is to make sure small employers set up pensions too, so their employees get to enjoy this major financial benefit.
“Our pensions reforms are starting a culture of saving which is making pension provision the norm across the UK.” Automatic enrolment is automatic for staff – they don’t have to do anything. But it’s not automatic for employers: hundreds of thousands more small and micro employers need to act in the coming two years. The Pensions Regulator is reiterating its warning that employers need to plan ahead to understand what they need to do and avoid the risk of non-compliance and a possible fine. Director of automatic enrolment at The Pensions Regulator, Charles Counsell, said: “The roll-out of automatic enrolment has proved successful so far, with more than 90 per cent of the first small employers required to put their staff into a workplace pension now complying with the law. “We are finding a minority of small employers are leaving preparations too late. Don’t get caught out – use our website to nominate a contact. This only takes around five minutes and means we can contact you with all you need to know to get ready.”
‘So far it has been those working for big firms, now the challenge is to make sure small employers set up pensions too.’

CHOOSE YOUR SCHEME On 26 April 2016, The Pensions Regulator (TPR) announced it was to publish a list of group personal pensions (GPPs) open to any employers seeking to comply with their automatic enrolment duties. TPR believes well-run multi-employer master trusts and GPPs are the best choice for small and micro employers preparing to meet their workplace pension duties. A list of independently reviewed master trusts which are open to all employers is already available on the employers’ section of TPR’s website. Now GPP providers which meet similar criteria are being encouraged to apply to appear on a new list on the website, increasing the choice of well-run schemes available. Executive director for regulatory policy, Andrew Warwick-Thompson, said: “Publishing a list of GPPs in addition to our list of master trusts is the right thing to do. We have always been clear that for the hundreds and thousands of small and micro employers preparing to comply with automatic enrolment, a well-run master trust or a group personal pension is the best choice.”

Planning for your Retirement. Following the latest pension reforms, now is the time to review your retirement plans. he last few years have seen major changes in investing for your retirement, the tax treatment of your pension contributions and accessing you pension at retirement.
T
Auto Enrolment Auto enrolment began in October 2012 and will be fully rolled out across all employers by February 2018. This means that all employees aged between 22 and normal retirement age, earning over £10,000 will be automatically enrolled into an auto enrolment pension scheme with contributions made by both the employer and employee. There are also options for workers earning between £5,824 and £10,000 to opt into auto enrolment and receive employer contributions to their pension if they wish. From 6 April 2019 onwards the minimum contributions to an auto enrolment pension will total 8% of salary, but will your pension pot be enough for you to live comfortably in retirement? Tax The Annual Allowance reduced from £255,000 to £50,000 in 2011 and is now £40,000 per year with a tapered arrangement for high earners, meaning the annual allowance could be as low as £10,000 for those earning £210,000pa. The Lifetime Allowance which is the most anyone can accumulate tax-free in their pension pot has now reduced to £1,000,000 and will be linked to the Consumer Price Index from 2018/19. Accessing your retirement funds Since April 2015 every individual over the age of 55 can now access their defined contribution pension and has the freedom to do with it what they wish.

TAKE UP THY BEDS… FOR ALMOST 30 YEARS DEVONSHIRE STREET HAS BEEN HOME TO THE NATURAL BED COMPANY. NOW, WITH THE MUCH-LOVED ROW OF INDEPENDENT SHOPS SET FOR DEMOLITION, THE COMPANY HAS SAID GOODNIGHT TO ITS OLD BASE AND STARTED AFRESH JUST AROUND THE CORNER. JULIE FARMER REPORTS. 30

he owners of the Natural Bed Company might have travelled the world but their latest journey has only been a short one, taking them from their home of 29 years on Devonshire Street to nearby Fitzwilliam Street. Prompted by a decision by Sheffield City Council last year to approve demolition of the row of shops in the Devonshire Quarter, the company’s move will see it open up a new 3,000 sq fts showroom for its bed collection, globally-sourced bedding, mattresses, furniture and homewares.

BUSINESS PROFILE
The business was first started back in 1974 by Peter Bennion. Despite being a research chemist, Peter knew his heart was in a more creative role so turned his back on a career at Sheffield University. He started to make bed frames from recycled wood and was inspired by the Seventies craze of the waterbed, deciding to ride the crest of the wave and set up shop. Peter sold his beloved VW Beetle for £500, bought a Mini van for £150 and used the balance to open a store in Nether Green’s Oakbrook Road. He named it Freewheelin’ after a Bob Dylan album. “We sanded the floors, liberated vegetable crates and screwed them to the walls as shelves – a look which is in vogue again,” he said. Peter was soon joined by Kay Wallace and the pair have run the business jointly for the last 40 years. The business grew and they diversified into handmade exotic furniture, textiles and clothing from India and the bazaars of Marrakech. They started travelling around the world and in 1978, with Kay’s energy and enthusiasm, the business had become Bringing It All Back Home, an Aladdin’s Cave on Glossop Road named after another Dylan album. A few years later they started making a new style of bed, the futon, and in 1987 they opened The Futon Shop on Devonshire Street. Business expanded further when the pair spotted a need for a website back in the early 90s. Their collection grew and in the year 2000 the store was renamed Natural Bed Company. The company has held the Made In Sheffield mark since 2011. Thanks to the company people all over the world are sleeping in beds made in the city, including Hollywood, New Zealand and Europe as well as in hotels in Tahiti and the Caribbean. “We believe in keeping local skills alive and manufacturing for ourselves which means not only that each bed is unique, but we can respond to customers’ needs,” said Kay.
Peter Bennion in the workshop and (left) with Kay Wallace
At the end of March the company, which handcrafts over 1,000 beds a year, moved to its new premises and held an official launch event on 7 April. The decision to move was made after much soulsearching.
‘We are excited to be moving with the times again, but our ethos is what it’s been since I made that first waterbed 42 years ago: ‘Keep it simple, keep it different and make it perfect.’”
“We love the character of Devonshire Street just as much as the people who tried to save it from the owners’ proposal to redevelop but when planning permission was granted we were left in a place of uncertainty,” said Peter. “Even if we had renewed our lease our long term future here was not guaranteed. It was time to do what we had put off for years – move to bigger premises. “We are excited to be moving with the times again, but our ethos is what it’s been since I made that first waterbed 42 years ago: ‘Keep it simple, keep it different and make it perfect.”

and Evans Halshaw with Renault – but organiser Roger Hart of Sheffield Vulcan Rotary Club says there is still room for another 15 cars. “We would love to fill the space. With The Peace Gardens there are fantastic photo opportunities for dealers to have their cars on show in Sheffield city centre with the Town Hall and the fountains. The council have even offered to allow us to colour the fountains, so they will be in blue to match our rotary colours.” The Lord Mayor will attend on the Saturday to present certificates to all of the dealers and, as well as the many cars on display, there will also be family entertainment including a stilt walker, balloon modelling and face painting for

Roger, who has always had a passion for cars says: “It’s not very often that you get an opportunity for rotary to show itself in such a big way. We are hoping this year that we shall have brand new models that might not have been seen before. One is likely to be a Ford and there is a chance we will get a brand new Volkswagen Tiguan at the show, but until that car arrives in Sheffield we won’t know.” Last year proved to be a huge success and funds raised from the show were divided between eight charities, including the rotary club’s own charity fund, which is used as a reserve to help people in need. Most recently, the club sent funds to a rotary club in Cumbria to help with the flooding crisis. They also help those in international disaster zones – including the Nepal earthquake – by buying and sending ShelterBoxes, which contain emergency aid such as tents and mosquito nets. The rest of last year’s money, £400, was donated to local Sheffield charities

about their work and we consider if they are eligible for a fund or a donation,” Roger explains. “Sometimes we will give them £50, it might be £100, but if we see a specific thing for them or they can say: that £400 will come in really handy for something, we specifically apply it. The medical and research treatment lounge, for example, wanted some DVD players because they have children from two to 16 years old, and some can bring in their own iPads, but others can’t afford them, so they wanted some replacement DVDs.”

NISSAN TURNS UP THE DRAMA ON ITS GT-R The current-gen Nissan GT-R has been with us now since 2007, and every year since the Japanese company has tickled its underbelly and internal workings – an extra dollop of power here, a suspension tweak there. You get the idea. Now Nissan has really gone to town with the MY17 edition and the changes are the most dramatic yet. In essence, the car’s looks have been changed giving it a more aggressive stance on the road with better aerodynamic properties. There’s a more luxurious new interior with fewer buttons and better sound deadening. The suspension has been changed to give better handling and improve ride quality. Power has also been raised to 562hp. The order books opened this month with first deliveries this autumn.
JORDAN CUTFORTH ROUNDS UP THE LATEST FROM THE WORLD OF MOTORING. FEEL THE NOISE The latest generation of the Audi R8 is a welcome relief. Instead of following the rest of the industry by downsizing and turbo-charging their engines, the R8 has stuck to its guns and kept to a naturallyaspirated formula. Not only are these engines more responsive compared to their turbo-charged counterparts, but they’re considerably louder too. As you would expect, the R8 Coupe is a fantastically aurally stimulating machine but this can only get better because now the Spyder version is coming along. Available to order from later in the spring with deliveries at the end of the year, the new R8 Spyder will come with a 532hp 5.2-litre V10 powerhouse mated to an S-Tronic dual-clutch gearbox. As with the Coupe, there’s no manual available.
REACH FOR THE SKY Want your German super-coupe to be a little more… draughty? Well we have good news for you; the C63 is going topless. It’s the C63 AMG Cabriolet and it’s an electrically-operated multilayered fabric job which can be lowered or raised at speeds of up to 31mph. As it’ll be based on the C63 AMG coupe, it’ll come with the same 4.0-litre bi-turbo V8 motor producing either 469hp or 503hp in C63 S guise, and it’ll come with all the same equipment options. It literally is a C63 with the roof chopped off. It’ll weigh more than the regular car, and certainly cost more too. But will you really care when there’s millions of miles of blue sky at your disposal. The C63 Cabriolet will be launched in August..

DIESEL JOINS THE CLUB With the launch of the latest Mini Clubman back in October of last year, it was only a matter of time before the most fuelefficient diesel variant was placed under the bonnet. It’s called the One D Clubman and it’ll be powered by a 1.5litre three-cylinder diesel producing 116hp, which can get the Clubman from 0-62mph in 10.4 seconds. Not bad for a car which in manual trim emits less than 100g/km of CO2 and manages 74.3mpg on the combined cycle. Automatic is slightly less frugal. High standard equipment levels which includes the likes of Mini Navigation, DAB, Bluetooth, Cruise control, MINI Connected and MINI Excitement Pack, 16inch alloy wheels, sports leather steering wheel and automatic lights and wipers. Available now. Priced from £21,375.

LIVE AND LEARN WHATEVER YOUR AGE OR LEVEL OF EXPERIENCE THERE IS ALWAYS POTENTIAL TO EXTEND YOUR KNOWLEDGE. JULIE FARMER FINDS OUT ABOUT LEARNING AT WORK WEEK 2016 AND EXPLAINS HOW WORKPLACES CAN BENEFIT BY ENCOURAGING EMPLOYEES TO LEARN SOMETHING NEW.
T
hink learning is just for students and apprentices? Think again. Learning at Work Week, from 16 to 22 May, is a national week to celebrate and promote the importance of all forms of learning at work, regardless of age or experience.
they can learn at work and how this can positively affect them and the business." Reasons for taking part depend on a business’ particular context and goals, but reported opportunities and benefits include:
Coordinated by the Campaign for Learning, the theme of this year’s national Week is ‘Connect’, focusing on how employees and organisations can learn and develop through collaboration, joining up with different partners to explore burning issues, sharing skills and talents and creative approaches to challenges.
Greater employee engagement Employees switched back onto learning and motivated, increased take up of learning and development opportunities. Informing business and learning and development strategies Stimulating and collating feedback, ideas and perspectives that inform future planning.
Companies across the country will be running activities during the week, with an estimated 500,000 employees in companies of all sizes taking part.
Opportunities to discover and recognise internal talent Drawing on employees’ own knowledge, passions and interests to create engaging activities and wider sharing and collaboration in the workplace.
Many companies use the Week as a catalyst for change, providing an opportunity to ‘rebrand’ or refresh learning and development, reinforcing the organisation’s commitment to staff development and celebrating learning that takes place all year round. The activities that companies run range from non-work related and interest-led activities through to business focused sessions and award ceremonies. “Continual learning at work helps businesses to be resilient, innovative and forward thinking,” said Julia Wright, national director of Campaign for Learning. “Learning at Work Week is a great, low-cost way to build momentum for this important agenda. You can promote the learning that you already have on offer, but even better run special activities where colleagues learn together, share skills and discover the many ways

Greater awareness of opportunities to learn Increased knowledge and understanding of the opportunities for learning and development all year round and what they can deliver for the business and individual.
Greater recognition and valuing of different ways to learn in the workplace Encouraging a broader perspective on how learning and development happens and how employees can take advantage of new ways to learn – from traditional classroom based training to social media. Changing attitudes to learning and work More positive and improved perceptions of learning and development both at business and individual level, increased motivation and productivity.
Highlighting business priorities, agendas and addressing change Providing a platform to focus on and share important information about the business and its direction and using it as an opportunity to engage employees with different agendas and policies in an

HOW OTHER BUSINESSES GET INVOLVED IN LAW WEEK
interactive and stimulating way. Addressing workplace silos and bridging information gaps Bringing employees from different parts of the business together or partner organisations in to learn from each other. Who can take part? Learners, workplaces, learning providers, ULRs and learning champions are all encouraged to take part in LAW Week. Companies that have taken part in previous years include WHSmith, Warburtons, American Express, Prudential and BSkyB. How much will it cost? It’s free to register and access the LAW Week online resources. Most organisers spend an average of £100 to organise their activities. Inspiration for activities The activities you plan will depend on what you are trying to achieve, but here are a few ideas: • Run talks or presentations by people from different roles across the business • Invite employees to give talks on their hobbies or interests • Ask senior people to share with others how they have learnt and progressed at work • Organise hands-on activities to encourage creativity – invite local artists, designers or craftspeople to run workshops
• Insurance broker PolicyBee devised ‘open days’ for each department. This gave them a chance to reveal their inner workings and show off what they do and allow colleagues to find out more about each other beyond their roles. IT led a tour of the server room, ran an IT quiz and did a presentation on the telephone system. Operations delivered a ‘learn to code’ challenge. Marketing ran challenges on ‘spot the inconsistencies’ and ‘write a subject line’. Employees also gave introductions to their hobbies – including a guitar lesson, a roller derby presentation, a fish tank film, and reflexology. • At Global Staffing Solutions company, WRS, each department was asked to design and present a departmental overview to consultants and managers to support crossselling of each other’s services. As a result of the week, employees’ awareness and confidence in crossselling each other’s services improved. The company also ran fun activities, including outdoor paella cookery masterclasses with a guest Spanish chef. • Foster Denovo trialled new activities, both as one-offs and as courses, with a view to building these into their longer term offer. Some of the courses, such as ‘Delivering Service Excellence’, related directly to the company’s strategic objectives, and others were designed to bring different parts of the business together to create a fun and interesting learning environment. The mixed programme of serious and fun learning included sessions on Financial Education, IT troubleshooting, Making Cocktails, Self Defence and Tai Chi. Some sessions were so popular that they have been incorporated into the company’s annual training programme. • The Chartered Society of Physiotherapy designed their Learning at Work Week to support continual improvement to organisational performance by making learning more effective. Activities included the ‘human library’ model, where the chief executive and senior management team shared with staff the positive impact learning has had on their careers.
• Invite new members of staff or apprentices to help you deliver LAW Week to teach them about management skills and help them make connections within the organisation • Bring in partner organisations to talk about what they do and how this links with your company The Campaign for Learning also provides activity ideas, graphics and posters on the LAW Week website, www.learningatworkweek.com.

It is critical that you protect the intellectual property in your idea to prevent it from being stolen or copied. You should bear in mind, however, that an idea in isolation does not amount to intellectual property. Intellectual property is something that you have to physically create. If you have described your idea in words which are written down, you will be protected by copyright which will prevent others from using your idea as written down without your permission. You get copyright protection automatically. Automatic copyright protection will apply to:-

copies of it to others or renting or lending copies of your work or putting it on the internet. If you have created a design based on your idea, ‘design right’ will automatically protect your design for 15 years after it was created, which means that you can then use it to stop someone copying your design. Design right relates to how different parts of a design are arranged together.

Registering a patent is highly specialised and I would recommend that you see a patent agent. If your idea is to create a brand, you could register a trademark to protect that brand. If you are able to register your trademark, you would then be able to prevent anyone from using your brand without your permission as well as licensing or selling your brand. You won’t be able to register your invention as a trademark unless you can demonstrate that it is unique. You will have to check the trademarks database to see whether anyone else has already registered an identical or similar trademark to yours.

6 The layout of published editions of written dramatic and musical works.
If your idea is an invention, you could apply for a patent to protect that invention. A patent will give you the right to take legal action against anyone who makes, uses, sells or imports it without your permission. You should note that your invention will only be granted a patent if you can demonstrate that it is something that can be made or used, is new and is not merely a modification of something that already exists.

If you want to discuss your idea with somebody else before you decide what to do with it, you could protect your idea by entering into a non-disclosure agreement with that other person before you share it with them. Good luck with your idea.

LOOK EAST! JOHN MURPHY FINDS GREAT GOLF AT THE FOREST PINES HOTEL AND GOLF RESORT.
S
heffield golfers are often tempted to head north to Leeds courses or west, over the Pennines, to some of Cheshire’s finest tracks such as Mere or Mottram. However they could do worse than cut down on journey time and avoid busy roads by going east. Under an hour away along the M18 and across the M180 lies the impressive Forest Pines Hotel and Golf Resort. The course features three loops of nine holes, Forest, Pines and Beeches, which snake their way through majestic pines and open heathland. The high canopies and the repetitive sound of ball on bark are reminiscent of some of the great courses around the South West of France, such as Hossegor and Seignosse. The resort is in North Lincolnshire, just outside Scunthorpe, which always sounds a long way from Sheffield but in reality is just over 40 miles away and very accessible. Come off Junction 4 of the M180 and the clubhouse is a hefty two iron down the road. The course has been substantially developed since its opening in 1996, especially after it became part of the QHotels collection in 2005, and has an enviable reputation as a venue for golfers of all standards. The combination of Forest and Pines is the longest, standing at 6,842 yards with the signature hole being the seventh on the Pines, a 200 yard par
three involving an intimidating drive over water. The previous par five hole also involves water and is a real tester as stoke 18. A decent drive takes you in front of a large pond which you have to negotiate to get in position for a third shot to the green. One of the most interesting holes on the Forest course is the par four fourth, which is a tight dog-leg to the left. Hit the ball too far and you run out of room, not far enough and you’re not round the corner for your approach shot. This hole is one of the very few where, as a first time visitor to the course, you are unable to get a clear sense of where to hit. The remainder of the holes are clearly defined and visually very attractive. This is a great strength of the three loops as is the maturity of the course. It gives the impression that it is far older and more established than 20 years and explains why it was deemed good enough to stage the 2013 Boys Home Internationals. Forest Pines operates annual memberships, day green fees, corporate days and most significantly is one of the premier courses available through the incredibly flexible QFairway membership scheme, operated by QHotels. For as little as £295 you can buy a membership which entitles you to play at selected QFairway clubs while a £375 membership allows you to play at all 15
courses including 10 resort-based ones such as Slaley Hall in Northumberland and Oulton Hall in Leeds. When you join you receive points according to your membership level and these can then be spent when you book your golf at any of the courses throughout the country. Different tee times and different courses cost differing points so a golfer can plan away days and breaks to suit. It’s a unique system which caters for the regular golfer plus the returning or occasional golfer who does not want the expense, commitment and lack of variety of being tied to one club. QFairway membership also provides the benefits of being able to enter club competitions, holding a handicap and enjoying substantial discounts on Q venues’ food, drink, clothing, lessons, resort accommodation, spa and leisure visits. Additional promotions, exclusive to QFairway members, are also offered through the year. Such deals are great value if Forest Pines sets the standard. It houses an impressive leisure and spa complex plus two restaurants, excellent accommodation and the atmospheric Pines Bar with fine views over the sprawling course. To find out more about Forest Pines and Q Hotels’ range of golf packages, visit www.QHotels.co.uk/golf or call 01434 676587.

WORK AND PLAY A MONTHLY ROUND-UP OF NEWS, ACHIEVEMENTS, CELEBRATIONS AND NEW FACES
MARIE APPOINTED SHEFFIELD’S FIRST ENTERPRISE ADVISER A female engineering boss is the first in Sheffield to support a new regional campaign that is matching employers with schools and colleges. The Enterprise Advisers programme for Sheffield City Region aims to bridge the gap between education and work, and promote the skills needed by the workforce of the future. Marie Cooper is Plant Manager and Director from President Engineering Group Ltd (PEGL), which is part of global manufacturer Parker Hannifin. Marie has been matched with Bradfield School on Kirk Edge Road, where there is a strong tradition of interest in engineering and enterprise, and she is convinced of the value of the programme for addressing the major skills gap in engineering. She said: “We need talented young
people to secure the future of our industry, but we don’t just want high grades. It’s all about the wider skill set. That’s why working with schools is important. Employers can help to inform the curriculum and support schools in developing the broader qualities and skills that young people need for a successful future.”
CHANGES AT THE TOP FOR FAST-GROWING AIRMASTER Swallownest mechanical services company Airmaster has changed its top tier. As founder Richard Pogson steps away from the company he founded in 1992 to pursue his interests in house and car projects, resources director Lisa Pogson becomes joint managing director with former operations director Mark Staniland.Richard’s co-director Tony England also steps down to spend more time in France. Lisa Pogson, President Elect at the Barnsley Rotherham Chamber and a founding member of their Women in Business group is delighted to be at the helm as Airmaster’s growth accelerates at a colossal pace. “Our turnover target was £7m this year, but we have already smashed £9.5million,” she said. “We now have 40 staff and our numbers are growing almost daily. We’re currently looking for a site supervisor in the South and more field engineers shortly.” Most recent team members include project engineer Michael Archbould and mechanical design engineer James Dawson.

FAIR EMPLOYER CHARTER GAINING MOMENTUM Since its launch in January 38 organisations have signed up to Sheffield’s Fair Employer Charter. The first of its kind in the country to have been led by businesses, the Charter consists of a series of pledges around working culture and conditions. It was developed by manufacturer Gripple, the Sheffield Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and the Our Fair City campaign to encourage the adoption of fairer employment practices across the city. Well-known private, public and third-sector organisations that have joined so far include Sheffield City Council, The University of Sheffield, South Yorkshire Police, Cavendish Cancer Care and BirchenallHowden. Professor Alan Walker, chair of the Our Fair City Campaign and chair of the Fairness Commission, said: “The Fair Employer Charter has been a tremendous success since it launched earlier this year, with all kinds of companies, charities and authorities keen to get involved. “As awareness grows, more and more employers are getting in touch with us or joining online, and I am sure that we will continue to see that trend continue.”

UTC SHEFFIELD TOPPING OUT CEREMONY LED BY SIR GARY VERITY A topping out ceremony led by Sir Gary Verity has marked the latest construction milestone for Sheffield’s second University Technical College (UTC).UTC Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park campus on Attercliffe Common is due to open this September. The £10 million facility for 14 to 19-year-olds will specialise in healthcare and sports sciences, and computing. UTC project sponsors, partners, employers and Sheffield South East MP Clive Betts took part in the celebration and guests signed a cladding panel that will be hoisted and fixed into place on the building.
QUEEN’S AWARD FOR SOFTWARE FIRM Sheffield-based 3Squared has won a Queen’s Award for Innovation for the software it has developed for the rail industry.
Sir Gary Verity, chief executive of Welcome to Yorkshire said: “Sheffield is once again leading the way in creating a lasting legacy for generations. The young people who study here at the University Technical College, which is part of the Olympic Legacy Park, will be the innovators of the future. They’ll learn in world class facilities, giving them fantastic skills in industries such as healthcare, sports sciences and computing. An exciting future lies ahead of them.”
The company achieved the accolade due to the major efficiencies that its RailSmart suite of Apps has brought for train operating companies. Rail companies using the Apps have reported cost savings and improved operational efficiency, and for 3Squared, this has contributed directly to accelerated growth over the last three years in new product sales, increased turnover and profitability. James Fox, commercial director at 3Squared, said: “These are the awards that every company wants to secure. Jake Cawthorne – aka ‘Slick’ due to his impressive hairstyle – is an engineering apprentice at Gripple, the Sheffield-based manufacturer of the unique wire fastener, won the AMRC Training Centre’s 2016 Maintenance Apprentice of the Year Award. For the last year, 18-year-old Jake from Gleadless, Sheffield, has been a multiskilled maintenance engineering apprentice at Gripple, spending one day a week at the AMRC training centre, until his apprenticeship ends in September, after which he hopes to be offered a full-time job. Jake’s interest in employee-owned Gripple started early while he was studying at Birley Community College and, using his apprenticeship contacts, he secured a work placement at the company. He left college with an engineering GCSE and, because the Gripple placement had gone well, he applied for the 18 months’ apprenticeship. Of his apprenticeship Jake said: “Fixing and maintaining Gripple’s machines is fantastic and, as equal shareholders, we all get along. We have freedom, which we use wisely and I hope I can look forward to a rosy future with the company.” Gripple, takes on an average of two apprentices a year, all within the engineering department and, as part of their training, they rotate around the three Gripple sites in Sheffield to expose them to the differing types of engineering and technologies. Currently the company has five apprentices, and will be setting on another one, or possibly two this year. The AMRC Training Centre judging panel felt that Jake was a perfect example of a very hard working and enthusiastic young person who has a very exciting future ahead of him.

10 THINGS…
MAY 2016
www.ffb-online.co.uk
10 THINGS... YOU MIGHT NOT KNOW ABOUT INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY BY JOYCE GRAY AND EMMA TAYLOR, FROM THE BUSINESS & INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY CENTRE SHEFFIELD. 1 Every business owns some
intellectual property Whether start-up or SME it’s important to identify what this is at an early stage; do you know yours? You may have a trade mark, patent, design or something protected by copyright but it’s important to know the difference. These intangible assets add value to your business and can give you a competitive edge.
2 A brand isn’t automatically
protected Even if you are a limited company or you possess a domain name for your website you still need to register a trade mark and logo with the Intellectual Property Office (IPO). This is because someone else may have a similar name or brand to you.
3 You need to do your
homework! Research into intellectual property protection is key; it can be a time consuming process if you don’t know where to start. The IPO website is the best place to start, you can search online for current trademarks and logos.
4 If you are you might need a
patent If you have innovated or invented something recently the chances are you will require a patent to prevent your idea from being copied. A patent covers how products work, how they are made, what they do, how they do it and what they are made of. Even if something similar exists in the market place, you may have discovered a new way to bring this product about in terms of how it is made
50
and a point of difference exists between them.
5 Exactly what a patent protects It gives you 20 years of monopoly on the market to produce your product. It also allows you the upper-hand in legal action against anyone challenging your product; for example this might be someone trying to import a copy produced without your permission.
6 The difference between Design
Right and Registered Design What’s the difference? Everyone has Design Right as this is an automatic right within the UK and protects the 3D aspect for 10 years. However, you may wish to consider further protection which a Registered Design (RD) will give you. RD protects 2D and 3D features of your creative idea and lasts for 25 years with licence renewal.
7 Copyright is another
protection tool Copyright gives you automatic rights in the UK. Copyright covers any creative works whether it is written down or recorded in a number of different ways. For example; literature, art and any audio-visual such as music, film, television. It is worth knowing it also covers software, databases and web pages. It is likely that everyone will own some form of copyright protected material within their business.
8 Knowledge of your
competitors is of tremendous value to your business success This applies whether you’re a start-up or
a growth company. Finding this out is easy but only when you know how. Use of business databases is vital to locate others in your sector, understand their financial status, potential growth, brand names and the Intellectual Property they own.
9 Trade Secrets aren’t
just for spies They’re relevant and real to ensure strict confidentiality. It’s important to think about using a Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA) when discussing your innovation or invention. Trade Secrets refers also to your behaviour such as; keep your documents out of sight of strangers, make it routine to lock your computer screen when you’re not at your desk and ensure you are clear on your confidentiality clauses in your contracts with others e.g. consultants, employees etc.
10 Support is free!
Business & IP Centre Sheffield is based in the Central Library in the heart of the city. Our Intellectual Property service has 6,000 subscribers to our email alerts and we have supported over 2,000 service users over the last year with questions about their intellectual property and general business enquiries.
