FIVE IMPROVEMENTS ULTRA-FAST CONNECTIVITY CAN MAKE TO YOUR BUSINESS THE WAY WE DO BUSINESS IS CHANGING.

e’re becoming ever more reliant on the internet and exploring a new generation of applications and cloud services. But businesses are being held back. Our outdated digital infrastructure is unable to cope with the volume of data we are producing – leading to dropouts and slowdowns, and limiting our ability to grow. CityFibre are now providing businesses in Sheffield with access to superior, high capacity, pure fibre infrastructure through local service provider Exa Networks. With ultra-fast, gigabit-speed internet connectivity, businesses are fully future-proofed and ready to embrace the emerging cloud services that will help them innovate and succeed. So, what are some of the benefits that you could hope to see for your business? Ultra-fast, symmetrical speeds & super-low latency With a pure fibre connection directly into your business, you will have access to symmetrical, gigabit-capable upload and download speeds, increasing efficiency and productivity. Unlike socalled ‘fibre’ broadband services, there is no copper to restrict the Internet speeds it can support, meaning practically limitless capacity. No slow-downs, no matter how many people are using the network Gigabit speed internet is on average 100 times faster than current broadband. Staff working in a range of ways be that office based, in the field, or operating remotely, can simultaneously access a gigabit network at peak times with no drop in speeds. This means that

OUR OUTDATED DIGITAL INFRASTRUCTURE IS UNABLE TO COPE WITH THE VOLUME OF DATA WE ARE PRODUCING it’s possible for everyone to do whatever they need online at the same time with no waiting around for pages to load or content to buffer. Next-generation services, cloud computing & remote back up A pure fibre connection can support your business now and as your digital requirements evolve in the future. Virtually limitless capacity means a new world of applications become practical solutions, from Office 365 and video conferencing, to cloud computing platforms such as Amazon Web Services. Revolutionise the way your business communicates. Ditch your land line for cheaper, smarter VoIP telephony and have your meetings

face to face with HD video conferencing tools. With gigabit speed internet, lag free video conferencing will be the norm, helping to bring businesses together, even if they’re on opposite sides of the world. Resilient, reliable, responsive Business critical services can run smoothly over the state-of-theart infrastructure, where pure fibre connectivity represents a truly diverse connectivity solution, completely independent from incumbent infrastructure. CityFibre’s business class SLA’s mean that if you do encounter any issues, they are resolved quickly and efficiently.

PREVIEW heffield city centre’s skyline has changed rapidly over the last few months, and now the dust from the demolition of various buildings long past their sell-by date has settled, we wait to see what will be built to replace them.

S

From the long-awaited City Centre Retail Quarter to the prime site workspaces of the Digital Campus opposite Sheffield railway station and the rich untapped potential of Castlegate, we appear to be at the start of an era of massive change... but will it be a change for the better? This month in First For Business, consultant editor Andy Waple has the update on some of the major developments. Meanwhile a flourishing service which helps Sheffield City Region businesses grow and develop has celebrated its first birthday. In just 12 months the Growth Hub has engaged with over 3,500 businesses and is actively supporting more than 1,000 companies and has helped to create an impressive 747 jobs. We sent chief feature writer Clare Parkin to look at the key areas where this innovative organisation is helping new and established businesses to grow.

Whether it is a new start-up or a firmly established company with a proud tradition, growing your business can be devilishly difficult. From increasing sales to improving your products and services, from taking on new staff to looking for additional funding, the challenge of juggling all these issues and more is never simple. We take a close look at how to tackle these problems and what help is available. One of the trickiest problems facing any company is what to do when they outgrow their premises and need new ones. Should they lease or buy, and how do you best weigh up the advantages and disadvantages of both? That is the tricky challenge our Dream Team of business experts have been asked to tackle this month. One business that seems to go from success to success is one of Sheffield’s most iconic and instantly recognisable buildings, the Crucible Theatre. Since opening its doors in 1971 it has become established as the home to the World Snooker Championship, and some of the nation’s finest theatrical talents have performed there as the venue has won repeated Regional Theatre of the Year awards. Chief executive Dan Bates took

CHRIS WILSON, EDITOR us backstage to tell us some of the secrets behind this long-running success. Car lovers will be getting revved up in anticipation of Sheffield Motor Show, which is back for the fourth year running with local dealers from across the city showcasing cars from different manufacturers on Saturday 3 and Sunday 4 June at Barkers Pool, Fargate, Sheffield Town Hall and Pinstone Street. Looking even further ahead we look at the innovative airbags, clever cameras, augmented dashboards and revolutionary headlights that are set to revolutionise motoring in the not too distant future. Along with our regular business news, that’s just a taste of what’s in First For Business this month. Let us know what you think by tweeting us @ffbmagRMC.

POSITIVE OUTLOOK

START OF WORK ON THE LONG-AWAITED RETAIL QUARTER IN SHEFFIELD CITY CENTRE IS SEEN AS A FALSE DAWN TO SOME OBSERVERS, BUT THERE IS A NEW-FOUND OPTIMISM THAT THE CITY MAY BE AT LAST TURNING THE CORNER. ANDY WAPLE UPDATES ON SOME OF THE MAJOR DEVELOPMENTS.

CITY CENTRE RETAIL QUARTER: After years of frustration, builders are finally on site and the construction of the first phase of Sheffield’s new retail quarter is underway. Diggers have moved in and work has started on HSBC’s six-storey offices and associated ground floor shops

on the site of the former Grosvenor House Hotel. HSBC has signed a deal to move into the new office block once it is completed in 2019. As work gets underway, a new public space in Charter Square is taking shape to complement the nearby Heart of the City scheme which at

WEST BAR: Nearby, between West Bar and the Riverside development, outline plans for a £175million regeneration scheme have been approved by councillors. Urban developer Urbo is looking to create West Bar Square, creating a mixed use area of offices, homes, a four-star hotel, shops and restaurants bordered by Corporation Street, Bridge Street and West Bar. Councillors overwhelmingly supported the plans for the development, which they say will complement their own Grey to Green environmental regeneration project that has brightened up the previously decaying area. West Bar is also subject of a £30million development by the council’s Chinese investment partner Sichuan Guodong Construction Group.

last will not stand alone as a symbol of Sheffield’s recent progress. Sheffield City Council has yet to put in a planning application for the second phase of the retail quarter but it has been confirmed that John Lewis is continuing talks about a new flagship store, so hopes are high.

THE MOOR: Meanwhile, Sandra Barley, centre liaison manager for The Moor, that has witnessed an increase in footfall of more than 100,000 in the last year, said she was hopeful a new occupier – probably a clothing retailer – had been found for the former BHS department store that closed last summer. Her optimism coincided with the opening of the Light Cinema complex whose nine big screens, associated shops and restaurants mark the second phase of work to regenerate The Moor, with the row of shops opposite set to be transformed shortly as part of phase three.

THE DIGITAL CAMPUS: Occupying a prime site opposite Sheffield railway station, this collection of workspaces is a key gateway that acts as a shop window to the city’s aspirations. Bucking the worst of the recession that had blighted many developments in recent years, the campus has consolidated its position with close to full occupancy of the first two buildings and a third on the way. Its key developer, The Scarborough Group, has announced ambitious proposals to link the campus with the rest of the city centre, towards the Heart of the City.

CASTLEGATE: The site of Sheffield’s first settlement has fascinated historians for generations and it has been a long ambition of the city fathers to bring it back in to significant use, an aspiration that has been accelerated by the re-siting of the city’s markets onto The Moor. Plans to unearth some of the hidden ruins of Sheffield Castle remain, along with a desire to see small to medium-size enterprises settle there, bringing new life to the area which has witnessed a sad decline. Fitzalan Square, at the top of Castlegate, could be the first to see refurbishment, following Hallam University’s occupancy of the former Head Post Office. Discussions are underway to see the former Old Town Hall, latterly the Crown and High Courts, Waingate, being brought back into use.

KELHAM ISLAND: The transformation of Kelham Island from one of the city’s early industrial settlements to a thriving residential community with bars, cafes, shops and businesses has been one of Sheffield’s real success stories in recent years. Blocks of flats already line the River Don, and work on the Little Kelham eco-home development is progressing. Additional redevelopment of the area around St Vincent’s Church, to the south of Shalesmoor, is continuing apace and more large student and private residential blocks are planned, with new access routes aimed at creating better connectivity.

NEW ERA DEVELOPMENT: The £65million Chinatown development with mixed leisure, commercial and residential use, which includes a 20-storey sky scraper, is progressing and will welcome its first occupants later this year when student apartments open in August. The following month 100 studio apartments will be finished at the site at St Mary’s Gate. The apartments are being managed by Omnia Space, which specialises in residential lettings and property management across Sheffield. New Era Square will become a “cosmopolitan, international, multicultural square that is available to all,” according to Jerry Cheung, the Chinese developer behind the scheme. When completed, the development will be home to a total of approximately 600 accommodation units, predominately 26-30sqm studio rooms, plus micro-flats. The project will also include shops, food and drink outlets on the ground floor, leading out to an open-air square for events. The new KH Oriental supermarket will span two levels and will be in place in the new building when the first students arrive. In the second phase of the development, there will be business office space, an exhibition hall and a China Business Incubator to enhance enterprise and trade between China and the UK. COMMERICAL PROPERTY: Last year’s commercial property investment market was noted for the highest levels of overseas investment, according to Knight Frank.

UNIVERSITY OF SHEFFIELD: The planned conversion of the old Henderson’s Relish factory into a pub is just one small facet of the University’s expanding and eye-catching campus. It is part of a masterplan aimed at creating more pleasing public spaces around its striking new academic and research buildings as evidenced by the pedestrianisation of Portobello and Leavygreave Road. Other improvements include work on the Western Bank bridge, to create better pedestrian links between the growing number of sites. Meanwhile Hallam University has invested significantly in its campuses.

IKEA: Across the city in Tinsley construction of the new IKEA, home furnishings store is well underway prior to its planned opening in late summer. The store will create 380 jobs in-store and a further 100 for the call centre. IKEA Sheffield will be the retailer’s most sustainable store to date and will aim to achieve 100 per cent renewable energy. The store is targeting a BREEAM ‘excellent’ accreditation and will incorporate a number of green technologies such as photovoltaic panels, rainwater harvesting and linking in with the district heating scheme. Electric vehicles will be used for home delivery, and IKEA will provide two electric vehicle charging points on site to offer renewably generated power for EV vehicles free of charge. Managers will encourage staff to use these sustainable transport options and will contribute more than £400,000 as part of the Section 106 agreement in sustainable travel. This includes improvements to the tram stop and cycle ways and will enhance the efficiency of the bus fleet serving the store. IKEA has also committed to improving local roads and junctions around the store to improve traffic flows.

The city’s office market drove record investment levels for the year, with the foreign spend topping £60million and amounting to 82 per cent of turnover, with prestige properties like Vulcan House at the J2 Riverside Exchange and Riverside East office, home to law firm Irwin Mitchell, being snapped up. Nick Wales, partner at Knight Frank, said: “Overseas investment in commercial property is the key headline for 2016, complemented by overall office investments which are at a six year high. “Importantly, deal number was sharply up year-on-year with ten investment transactions completed. This compares to just two in 2015. Investors are seeing the potential of Sheffield being unlocked through exciting developments such as the new retail quarter, which is a long awaited boost for the city centre and is expected to be a catalyst for further inward investment, together with the Advanced Manufacturing and Innovation District, which has helped to give the City Region its own identity on an international level. Sheffield also offers excellent investment options compared to other major regional cities as it continues to offer better value from an investment perspective than Manchester, Birmingham or Leeds. Peter Whiteley, partner and head of the Sheffield office at Knight Frank, added: “Sheffield had suffered from a shortage of high specification city-centre office space. This is now being addressed with exciting central opportunities, delivering needed Grade A space for both the existing market and potential inward investment enquiries to Sheffield. Buildings including 3 St Paul’s Place, Westfield House and Steel City House are incredibly well appointed and offer a quality working environment within the city centre. “With supply of prime offices diminishing, we are now looking at rental growth in the office sector, which is positive news for investors and developers.”

Jo North set up ITC Skills to help companies improve the way they work with apprentices, and she is already advising local authorities, NHS trusts and other employers.

Jo, who is based in Eckington near Sheffield, originally trained as a nurse and ran a successful training company in the 1990s, which focused on the health, care and early years’ sectors. But her new consultancy is designed to service companies in all sectors, and help them understand and make better use of the apprenticeships. Jo, who is being given business support by Sheffield City Region Growth Hub, said age is no barrier to setting up a business. “People always think entrepreneurs and business start-ups are all about young people, but the older you are the more experienced you are; so actually I think it is a great time to start a business,” said Jo, who is also the chair of the education and training apprenticeship trailblazer leadership group, a Governmentappointed group set up to develop employer-led standards in apprenticeships. ith two world-class universities, excellent transport links and the pulling power to attract major companies like McLaren and Boeing – it’s no surprise that the Sheffield City Region is becoming an increasingly popular place for people to set up business. A recent report for Sheffield alone showed a 10.3 per cent increase in selfemployment within the last year as well as growth in the advanced manufacturing and creative and digital industry sectors and faster-than-average growth of GVA. Strong growth in apprenticeships, with more than one-and-a-half times the national average being taken up was also highlighted in the State of Sheffield 2017 report. But the thought of setting up and running a new business can be daunting. Even with a solid idea there are countless factors to consider: How do you put a sound business plan together? Who are your customers and how will you reach them? Is there any funding available? Do you and any staff members have the skills needed to succeed? Location also plays a major part in the support available to new businesses.

16 First For Business | www.ffb-online.co.uk

Within the Sheffield City Region there are a number of free business support services which can help start-ups take the next steps into business. These include Sheffield City Region Growth Hub, Business Sheffield, RiDO (in Rotherham), Business Doncaster and Enterprising Barnsley. Of course, there are other organisations offering support to start-ups and which could specialise in industry sector, your age (there are dedicated support organisations for young people in business) or the exact nature of the support you need. Here are our top tips to help your business grow and prosper: • Write a list – Work out exactly what you want to achieve and which areas you need support in. • Do your research – Test your business idea thoroughly with potential customers, it will help you to identify pitfalls at any early stage when they can be easily rectified. • Be clear on your business plan – Business support organisations can help with this and templates can be downloaded freely from www.gov.uk

• Make use of support available from HMRC – On the www.gov.uk website you can sign up for business help and education emails as well as webinars and online courses. • Use a business mentor – Many support organisations offer a free mentoring service. You can also use www.mentorsme.co.uk to search for other free services in your area • Funding – Apply for as many business grants as you can or even consider if crowdfunding is an option for you. Again many of the business support organisations can help you to access funding to get your business off of the ground. • Be in the know –Top business individuals all know their market inside out. Keep abreast of any changes in your industry and know your competitors. Knowing your business inside out can keep you one step ahead of the game. • Utilise the help and resources offered – The organisations listed above – plus others – will be able to locate resources for you and signpost you to workshops and training courses relevant for your business.

KEVIN KERLEY, CHAIRMAN OF THE ACADEMY FOR CHIEF EXECUTIVES, SHEFFIELD CITY REGION Moving premises is a big upheaval for a business, but as you grow this often becomes a necessity. Whether to lease or buy depends on many factors such as is there a property for sale in the area that is suitable? how will the move affect your team? What are the dilapidation costs going to be for your existing premises? Will the premises be large enough for you in the next 10 years or might you outgrow it also? The benefits of ownership: – The property can increase your balance sheet. – You can set it out how you wish without needing permission from a landlord. – The property becomes and investment which will hopefully grow in value. – You could rent some space in it if it was too big for your requirements. – There may be tax saving implications on a purchase for the business. – You may be able to purchase the property out of your pension. – You may be able to buy the property yourself and rent it to the business. – Repayments are often cheaper than renting, particularly with the current interest rates. Disadvantages of ownership: – You will need at least 15per cent cash deposit. – How will the purchase and added costs effect cash flow. – Will the property be saleable in the future? 18 First For Business | www.ffb-online.co.uk

DEAR DREAM TEAM, We have been in the same leased premises for 14 years, we have now outgrown these premises and need new ones. Should I lease or buy new premises and what are the advantages/disadvantages of both? – There is responsibility for ongoing maintenance and fit out. – You may need planning permission. – The business may grow or contract unexpectedly due to economic conditions, you may find you need more less space and be tied in. – Added costs, IT infrastructure, lawyers, stamp duty. – If you have a variable mortgage, you are vulnerable to the markets. With renting premises the reverse of the above is of course true. Renting from a personal point of view always seems like wasted money – as a businessman I want my money to work and grow for me. I purchased premises two years ago and it took two years to find something that was suitable as it is a renters’ market. There are very few ideal properties for sale. Once we identified the right property, it was owned by the pension fund of a business that had gone bust and the process took almost a year to complete. Whichever way you decide to go, ensure that you employ the services of a good commercial lawyer, as both leasing and purchasing can be fraught with unforseen pitfalls The cost will be a good investment in the long run that will probably save you money and stress, as well as leaving you to concentrate on the business strategy. Good luck.

ROB MOORE RECOVERY EXPERT AND PARTNER AT TAYLOR & EMMETT Freehold Advantages of purchasing the freehold means that you will have the ability to do what you wish with the property without restriction. It can also be seen as an investment because if your business needs change, you can separate the property and rent out units to cover any costs for any commercial mortgage and once this is paid, it will lower your costs. A disadvantage is that you will be responsible for the maintenance and repair work. You will also need to consider what planning classification is on the premises you are thinking of purchasing as you may need to apply for a change of class. Leasehold Leasehold property could be considered “dead money” as you never own the property, although it does have its advantages. The biggest advantage is that normally maintenance and repair work are completed by the landlord, although this is always subject to the terms of the lease. The major disadvantages of leasehold are the rent review provisions and the restrictions that the landlord can place on you under the terms of the lease. It really does come down to your budget and long term intentions. Any advice? Tweet us @ffbmagRMC

ALL REVVED UP AND READY TO GO DEALERS AND EXHIBITORS SET TO TAKE OVER CITY CENTRE FOR THE BIGGEST SHEFFIELD MOTOR SHOW YET. ar-lovers rejoice! The Sheffield Motor Show is back for the fourth year running and, with local dealers from across the city showcasing cars from different manufacturers, including one new manufacturer, Mitsubishi at Europa, it is set to be the best yet.

C

“This year we’re pleased to welcome exhibits from other supporting organisations, such as A Fire Appliance, Edale Mountain Rescue, the Institute of Advanced Motorists and Sheffield College Motor Vehicle Apprentices,” says joint organiser Roger Hart of Sheffield Vulcan Rotary Club.

This year, the show takes place on Saturday 3 and Sunday 4 June when 53 new cars will be displayed at Barkers Pool, Fargate, Sheffield Town Hall and Pinstone Street. The show is a rare opportunity for local dealers to showcase cars in the city centre and, for anyone in search of a new car, it offers the chance to view all the newest models in one place.

The Lord Mayor will attend at 2pm on the Saturday to present certificates to all of the dealers and, as well as the many cars on display, there will also be family entertainment including a stilt walker and balloon modelling for little ones, and live demonstrations from the Sheffield College Motor Vehicle Apprentices.

Dealers and manufacturers already on the list include Burrows with Toyota, Europa with Subaru, Europa with Mitsubishi, Robins and Day with Peugeot, Pentagon Group with Vauxhall and Jeep, JCT with Mercedes and Smart, Lookers with Ford, Bristol Street Motors with Volvo, Grant McAllin with Ssangyong and MG, and Evans Halshaw with Renault. 22 First For Business | www.ffb-online.co.uk

Last year proved to be a huge success and funds raised from the show were divided between seven charities, including the Rotary club’s own charity, which is used as a reserve to help people in need. Recently, the club sent Aquaboxes to Nepal and Italy, providing families and communities with water filters and emergency supplies. Sheffield Vulcan Rotary Club meets on a

Tuesday evening and has a new speaker each week. Most of last year’s money, around £750 each, was donated to local Sheffield charities including Sheffield Young Carers, St Wilfrid’s Centre, Emmaus Sheffield, Sheffield Royal Society for the Blind and the Alzheimer’s Society. This year’s chosen charities include Grimm & Co, a thriving apothecary located in the heart of Rotherham which runs innovative storytelling and writing workshops for young people, St Luke’s Hospice, Whirlow Hall Farm Trust, Fable (For A Better Life with Epilepsy) which helps fund Vagus Nerve Stimulation Therapy for children and adults as well as support Neurocare, a hospital charity that is raising money for a ROSA Robot for the Royal Hallamshire Hospital to carry out brain surgery, as well as Edale Mountain Rescue, aand Rotary charities. Sheffield College (Hillsborough) has also played a part in the advertising of theMotor Show, creating an animated clip that will be showcased to the public closer to the event, and designing flyers.

SELF-DRIVE CARS

BLUEPRINT FOR THE FUTURE PHOEBE SEYMOUR TAKES A LOOK AT THE LATEST TECHNOLOGY THAT’S REVOLUTIONISING MOTORING. echnology has come a long way since the first gasoline engine automobile was created by Carl Benz in 1886. Although our childhood dreams of driving flying cars by 2000 didn’t materialise (and probably never will – sorry), many of the standard car features we now take for granted were once thought impossible.

T

However, inventors and car manufacturers are always working to develop the next big things in car technology, be they new gadgets to make our lives easier or innovative features to increase road safety. Here are the latest advancements taking the motoring world by storm, which are likely to become common place in the next few years.

With cruise control already mastered and more and more manufacturers adopting automatic parking systems, it’s just a matter of time before fully self-driving cars become widely available. Of course, it will take a long time for them to replace manual cars and only a handful of people will be able to afford them, but we are getting closer to self-driving cars than you might think. In California and Nevada, Google engineers have already tested self-driving cars on more than 200,000 miles of public highways and roads. According to auto.howstuffworks.com, Google's cars not only record images of the road, but their computerised maps view road signs, find alternative routes and ‘see’ traffic lights before they're visible. By using lasers, radars and cameras, these cars can analyze and process information about their surroundings faster than a human can. Driverless cars could even eliminate 95 per cent of car accidents caused by human error, according to the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents. And it’s not just Google who are racing to get a driverless car on the market. Apple is rumoured to be developing an ‘iCar’, while Mercedes Benz revealed the fully electric F105 Luxury in Motion concept car at the CES global consumer electronics and consumer technology trade show earlier this year and confirmed that a similar car would be on sale by the end of the decade.

INNOVATIVE AIRBAGS slow the car down, doubling the stopping power of the vehicle.

Who knew that airbags would not only help save people’s lives, but would become an active safety feature that can help stop accidents all together? Since airbags were first introduced as a safety feature to protect drivers, they have slowly made their way to other areas of cars to protect passengers. As well as inflatable airbag seatbelts, the Ford Edge has a door which contains a plastic bladder. In an impact, that bladder inflates and the glove box’s outer door panel pops out to cushion the passenger’s legs. Other car brands are now following suit and creating cars with curtain airbags, side

airbags, knee airbags and even ones that deploy under us. Mercedes is currently experimenting with airbags that deploy from underneath the car that will help stop a vehicle before a crash. The airbags are part of the overall active safety system and deploy when sensors determine that at impact is inevitable. The bags have a friction coating that helps

CLEVER CAMERAS There are already a number of cameras on the market, such as the Car Power Inverter Spy Camera and the easy-tomount GoPro HD Motorsports Hero, which record activities inside and outside your car. There are even rear view mirror full HD car dashcams that neatly fit inside your mirror, as well as built-in cameras that help you park, but the biggest changes taking place in car camera technology are in the way in which they are being used. Rather than simply using them for crime prevention, or as evidence in the event of a collision or incident, car manufacturers are also looking at how

cameras can assist driving and, in particular, stop you leaving the road. As well as keeping you in lane, the new Acura TLX system combines a camera and a radar system to recognise when you are about to run off a bend and corrects the steering to keep you on the road. Cameras themselves are not going to get much more sophisticated than this, but the way car manufacturers use them will be instrumental in the development of other exciting future technologies, such as the self-driving car.

REVOLUTIONARY LED HEADLIGHTS Just as our street lamps have moved into the 21st century by becoming LED, car designers are looking at ways to modernise headlights. Audi’s new Matrix LED headlights each use 25 diodes that work separately allowing the car to illuminate the lane ahead with high beams without blinding oncoming traffic. If this doesn’t excite you, you may be interested to know that the beams not only illuminate lanes and pedestrians, but can be aimed around corners as well. The smart and fully automatic lights may become available in the UK in the future but America has already been ruled out as their regulations restrict the use of laser headlights and brake lights that strobe during panic braking. As long as these revolutionary lights are used to help rather than hinder drivers and pedestrians, there’s no reason why these headlights won’t be right around the corner for UK drivers.

30 First For Business | www.ffb-online.co.uk

The bags also lift the vehicle up to eight centimetres higher, which counters the car's dipping motion during hard braking, improves bumper-to-bumper contact and helps prevent passengers from sliding under seat belts during a collision. What gives this kind of airbag potential is that it uses existing safety systems. But although Mercedes has been working on this technology for several years now, it isn't available on any production models yet and it may be another few years before this technology appears on our roads.

AUGMENTED DASHBOARDS Remember how futuristic and impressive it seemed when Robocop and The Terminator looked at a person or object and automatically brought up lots of information about them? Thanks to augmented dashboards, our cars will soon function in a similar way. GPS and other in-car displays already exist, as do displays on windshields on more high-end models, but in the near future, cars will be able to identify external objects in front of a driver and display information about them on the windscreen. BMW has already implemented a windshield display in some of their vehicles which displays basic information, but they're also developing augmented reality (AR) dashboards that will be able to identify objects and tell the driver how far away they are from them. The AR display will overlay information on top of what a driver is seeing in real life. So if you're approaching a car too quickly, a red box may appear on the car and helpful arrows will appear, showing you how to manoeuvre into the next lane and avoid a collision. An augmented reality GPS system would be particularly useful to drivers because it would be able to direct you without you ever having to take your eyes off the road.

‘DARK AND SEDUCTIVE’ WAS IT LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT FOR RACHEL MARTIN AS SHE VISITED ECCLESALL ROAD’S COCKTAIL HOTSPOT, KETTLE BLACK?

S

tepping into Kettle Black for the first time felt a little bit like going on a first date when you’re still thinking about your ex. I had a burning love for Menzels, the late cocktail bar that occupied the space which Kettle Black has replaced, but this new squeeze is a worthy rebound – lively, yet dark and seductive. The new kid on the block in Ecclesall Road’s cocktail ‘scene’ is a treasure trove of decadence. It has undergone a glamourous refurbishment and is now drenched in neon worktops, brass hanging lightbulbs and rich wooden floors. All of this is fully complemented by a heated courtyard veranda – perfect for an afternoon drink – cosy VIP mezzanine and a soundtrack of rehashed club classics that sound as funky as ever through the hefty sound system. Kettle Black is intimate, unpretentious and feels refreshingly authentic. The vibe: relaxed, friendly and cheerfully intimate. It feels a little like a clandestine world of its own, far removed from the bustle of the street outside, despite the fact the bar is habitually packed, especially on weekends.

40 First For Business | www.ffb-online.co.uk

Atmosphere aside, it is behind the bar where the magic comes alive, with their impressive menu designed to serve up a dose of drama in every drink.

vodka, amaretto, fraise syrup and cranberry juice. And don’t forget your phone... there are some serious Instagram opportunities here.

Classics are often best left untampered with, but the smooth, subtle espresso martini (£8.50), featuring signature twists including mint, Pooh Bear pick ’me’ up, or gingerbread, tastes even better than a perfectly made original.

The staff are in general are very attentive and are also happy to go off menu, whipping up any conceivable cocktail if you so wish. Our elegant hostess Rebecca had even organised for a bottle of Prosecco Gran Cuvee (£27.50) to be served on arrival, which went down very well with the table.

The Rouge Kettle (£8.50), a rambunctious raspberry cocktail, mixing Haig Club single grain whisky with Chambord, fresh raspberries, lemon juice, cranberry juice, and a dash of Angostura bitters, served in a copper martini glass, is fruity and refreshing. As is the Singapore Sling (£9) – made from Tanqueray London Dry, Cointreau, cherry brandy liqueur, DOM Benedictine, fresh lime juice, pineapple juice and a splash of grenadine, garnished with a fresh orange slice and a maraschino cherry. If you’re the kind of person who, like me, prefers a long drink after a long day, I’d suggest the delicious Lozzaberry (£8.50), a long drink served with fresh strawberries, muddled with Ketel One

I have more than a little crush on Kettle Black and a second date is definitely on the cards. This is the place to take a date or to catch up with friends over a conspiratorial cocktail away from the frenzy of the city. Just don’t expect to be able to stand up straight after sampling several of owner Pete Harpham’s overproof elixirs. CONTACT: Kettle Black 301 Ecclesall Road, Sheffield, S11 8NX Tel: 0114 268 0060

ONE OF A KIND AFTER THE WORLD SNOOKER CHAMPIONSHIPS CELEBRATED 40 YEARS AT THE CRUCIBLE, CLARE PARKIN TAKES A LOOK AT WHAT MAKES THE THEATRE SO SPECIAL.

I

t’s the uniquely shaped octagonal building which sits in the heart of Sheffield city centre and it’s loved around the world. Not only is it the home of worldsnooker, many famous actors and actresses have graced its stage over the years. But when it opened its doors in 1971 no one could have predicted how Sheffield’s Crucible Theatre would become famous the world over and how much of a boost it would be to the city’s economy. With its controversial thrust stage and no nonsense breezeblock façade it was in complete contrast to its arguably more attractive neighbour, the Lyceum Theatre. Six years after opening, a Chesterfield housewife mentioned to her snookerpromoter husband what a great place it would be for the sport and it was then the Crucible really took on its own identity. This month as the last ball was potted at the 40th World Snooker Championship, Sheffield Crucible showed once again what a massive part it plays in the city in 42 First For Business | www.ffb-online.co.uk

both boosting the region’s economy and putting the city on the tourist map. The snooker is reportedly worth more than £5 million to Sheffield based on a combination of direct economic impact and extensive media profile in the UK, Europe and the Far East, with a total audience of 285 million viewers.

After some research, Mr Watterson too was convinced and in 1977 after approaching the governing body, the sponsors and the BBC, Sheffield staged its first World Championship and the rest is history.

Sheffield has fought off competition from a host of major international cities looking to take the event out of its traditional home for the next ten years.

In addition to snooker, the Crucible attracts thousands of theatre-goers into the city centre who bring in revenue for the surrounding cafes, shops, restaurants and bars.

During the championships, the auditorium seats 925 people at every single session.

Sir Ian McKellen, Kenneth Branagh and Joanna Lumley are just some of the famous faces to perform there.

And it all started when Carole Watterson, the wife of Mike, a snooker entrepreneur and player who represented his country in international amateur events, went to the Crucible Theatre to watch a show and suggested it would be an ideal setting to stage snooker.

One of the Crucible’s biggest pluses is the versatility of the stage, which was so controversial and unique in the early days when Colin George, the founding artistic director of the Crucible, designed it. “The audience sits on three sides but no member is more than the length of a

THE CRUCIBLE FAST FACTS It is a Grade II listed building

Opened in 1971, the Crucible is part of the Sheffield Theatres complex – the largest theatre complex outside of London and incorporates the Crucible, the Studio and the Lyceum. The Theatre has attracted national and international attention for over 40 years. Recently named Regional Theatre of the Year, by The Stage, for an unprecedented third time – previous wins in 2013 and 2014 - in recognition of: success in creating new work, its bold approach to new classics and accessible ticketing policy. Sheffield Theatres also recently celebrated exceptional success at the UK Theatre Awards, winning in five categories, including Best Musical Production for both Show Boat and Flowers For Mrs Harris. During the World Snooker Championships, the auditorium seats 925 people per session The building went through a £15 million refurbishment between 2007 and late 2009 – opening during that period only for the 2008 and 2009 World Snooker Championships. In addition to welcoming the World Snooker Championship since 1977, the Crucible has also hosted squash and table tennis competitions.

brilliant to welcome so many people and eyes on the city.”

The snooker competition is so popular with the Chinese it has led to a replica of the Crucible Theatre being built in Beijing.

One man who is well aware of the Crucible’s worth is Chief Executive of Sheffield Theatres, Dan Bates.

“It just goes to show how special the atmosphere our stage and auditorium creates,” said Dan. “But there’s nowhere quite like the Crucible Theatre!”

“There is simply nowhere quite like the Crucible, whether that be to see a play or to watch snooker – the atmosphere is really electric because of the intimacy of the space,” said Dan.

Along with the Studio and Lyceum Theatres it forms Sheffield Theatres which won Regional Theatre of the Year Award this year making it a hat-trick after scooping the accolade in 2013 and 2014.

“Every seat is within a short distance of the stage, and both those watching and those playing often comment on how that makes for such a unique setting, and for a performer or player, there is no place to hide!

Sheffield Theatres is the largest theatre complex outside London and hosts a diverse programme of Sheffield-produced and touring work on each of the stages. From lavish musicals to acclaimed classics, bold new writing to family favourites there is a varied programme in the city all year round which attracts an average of 7,500 people each week.

“Sheffield is such a great city, and the welcome that Sheffield gives to the sport plays a big part. We’re delighted to host snooker for the next ten years and it is

“What makes Sheffield Theatres special is

the role that we play in the city,” added Dan. “The theatre belongs to everyone and making sure that we are accessible to everyone is really important to us. “We are incredibly proud of our reputation both within the City Region and worldwide and it is through support of our funders and corporate partnerships that we ensure the high quality, accessibility and sustainability of our world-class venue.” So what next for the Crucible and Sheffield Theatre as a whole? Dan added: “The theatres play a huge part in creating a cultural identity for the people of Sheffield. Over the next ten years we will continue to create worldclass productions, present the best of UK theatre and continue to develop local and emerging talent both on and off the stage. “By growing our partnerships and links within the city we aim to welcome even more people into our buildings. We are incredibly grateful for the businesses and individuals that support us; the next ten years look bright as we work together to make our theatres and this city thrive.” First For Business | www.ffb-online.co.uk 43

SOLICITORS BOOSTS FUNDS FOR THREE CHARITIES TO THE TUNE OF ALMOST £7,000 Solicitors Wosskow Brown has raised almost £7,000 for Barnsley Hospice, Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice and Cavendish Cancer Care through a variety of events. The firm raised the cash through events including a firework display at Wentworth Woodhouse, a sports quiz night and two ‘free will months’, in which Wosskow Brown provided a basic will at a donation price where all proceeds went towards the charity.

The first luxury student apartments at New Era Square will be ready by August as part of the leisure, commercial and residential development, which includes a 20-storey skyscraper. One hundred studio apartments will be available this September at the destination between London Road and the Sheffield United stadium in Bramall Lane. The apartments are being managed by Omnia Space, which specialises in residential lettings and property management across Sheffield. New Era Development Ltd, the Sheffield-based company behind the project, said it will create a “cosmopolitan, international, multi-cultural square that is available to all.” When completed, the development will be home to a total of approximately 600 accommodation units, predominantly 26-30sqm studio rooms, plus micro-flats. The project will also include retail units, food and drink outlets on the ground floor, leading out to an open-air square for event. In the second phase of the development there will be business office space, an exhibition hall and a China Business Incubator to enhance enterprise and trade between China and the UK.

Emilda Morgans, Partner and Head of CSR at Wosskow Brown, said: “To be able to help charities such as these three is a tremendous honour. “The work they do is incredibly important, and with our contribution, we hope to help them all provide the great service they do to even more people who need it.” The three charities will each receive £2,240.

EUROPE’S BIGGEST AEROSPACE CASTINGS FACILITY OPERATIONAL A castings facility capable of producing some of the biggest titanium aerospace components in the world is now operational at the University of Sheffield Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC). Construction of the furnace for the AMRC Castings Group was completed last year and in the past few weeks the first tests or ‘hot commissioning’ as it is known, have been completed successfully.

Andrew Denniff, Chief Executive of the Chamber, Phil Sayles, Deputy Principal of RNN Group and Lisa Pogson, President of the Chamber

RNN GROUP BECOME THE LATEST PATRON OF THE CHAMBER Education and training provider, RNN Group is the latest organisation to become a Patron of Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber of Commerce. With an income of over £50million each year, the RNN Group has three colleges and five training organisations. Phil Sayles, Deputy Principal at RNN Group, said, “Being a Patron will deepen the group’s links with the Chamber and employers across Barnsley and Rotherham.” The move comes as the RNN Group has expanded through a merger bringing Dearne Valley College into the group, alongside both Rotherham and Worksop colleges. The group is also about to start building the new university-level centre on Doncaster Gate in the centre of Rotherham, a move that will see extensive engagement with employers in the design and delivery of curriculum, including degree apprenticeships.

The furnace has three interchangeable crucibles with the capacity for melting 250kg, 500kg and 1,000kg of metal, which give it the versatility to produce components with a finished weight ranging upwards from 60kg. A molten mass in excess of 1,000kg is required to make a 500kg titanium casting and only a handful of furnaces exist globally that are capable of casting near net shape aerospace components of this size. With leading aerospace primes and manufacturing companies already lining up to collaborate on research, AMRC Castings is conducting initial paper and pilot studies to explicitly identify the risks and value streams associated with casting large-scale near-net shape components in titanium. AMRC Castings’ new furnace is part of a major investment and R&D programme, designed to enable UK companies to break into global markets for largescale titanium aerospace engine and structural components. It will be ready for industrial access around summer 2017.

COUNCILS SEES STRONG INTEREST FROM INVESTORS WANTING TO DEVELOP FORMER SKI VILLAGE SITE Sheffield City Council has reported a strong demand in investors expressing an interest to develop Parkwood, incorporating the former Ski Village. The council is hoping to receive a number of initial bids which will be evaluated as part of Sheffield’s Outdoor City and wider regeneration ambitions. Last month (April), the initial deadline for bids was extended by two weeks to Friday 21 April. The council will now carry out more in-depth work with the shortlisted parties. Plans to create an outdoor adventure experience that will be the ‘jewel in the crown’ of The Outdoor City were first announced by Sheffield City Council in December. The council wants to attract a developer to transform a site at Parkwood Springs into a nationally-significant attraction which will cement Sheffield’s reputation as The Outdoor City – the UK’s leading destination for people seeking outdoor adventure, city culture and rural escapes. The former ski village site sits within the wider open space of Parkwood Springs, which has seen major improvements over recent years, thanks to work between the Council, the Friends of Parkwood Springs group and other partners.
