PREVIEW nnovation is at the heart of this issue of First For Business, as we welcome the MADE Festival back to Sheffield and celebrate some of the region’s most successful entrepreneurs, from the early days of cutlery manufacturing through to today’s age of high technology.
I
MADE Entrepreneur Festival has become a sounding board for new ideas and is highly renowned for its inspirational roster of high-profile speakers. This year’s festival returns to the Crucible Theatre on 9 November, and having being voted in the top ten worldwide entrepreneurial conferences, promises to be even bigger and better. Speakers include Geoff Ramm, creator of Celebrity Service and OMG Marketing, Brad Burton, founder of 4Networking, Simon Biltcliffe, founder of Webmart, James Brown, founder of Beer 52, and McLaren reprehensive Ruth Nic Aoidh, who will be speaking about how she’s shaping the future strategy of McLaren Automotive. Feature writer Hannah Sanders has spoken to a number of the key players, including Sahar Hashemi OBE, the entrepreneur behind confectionery brand Skinny Candy and coffee chain Coffee Republic – one of the main players in the coffee revolution that changed the UK high street. So what’s the secret of her success? One element seems to be that you don’t need expert knowledge; in fact you’re better off
without it. Too good to be true? Turn inside to find out more. Another specialist consultation event featured this month is The Big Breakfast. Paul Blomfield, MP for Sheffield Central, ran a month of events across his constituency to listen to local views and set his priorities for the parliamentary year ahead. In previous years, issues raised have informed his work in parliament, such as a successful campaign to regulate payday lenders for which he was voted Citizen’s Advice MP of the Year in 2014. And this year, Paul took the opportunity to talk to businesses about their views on Brexit, priorities for EU negotiations, and issues surrounding transport, financial pressures, devolution and data protection. Sheffield City Region’s prowess in attracting and supporting start-ups and the self-employed has been in the spotlight once again, with The 2017 State of Sheffield report, commissioned by the Sheffield City Partnership Board, providing the most reliable snapshot of business reality. In today’s climate, life is not easy for a fledgling business that has to deal with the economic challenges the city and its region faces as a whole, and, against this challenging background, people starting up on their own often need support and finance to see their visions turn into reality.
CHRIS WILSON, EDITOR May 2016 saw the launch of the Sheffield City Region (SCR) Growth Hub, a £4million programme backed by partners such as Prince’s Trust to support local start-ups and small businesses, with the ambition to drive growth of “hundreds of new businesses” by 2019. In its first year up to April 2017 The Growth Hub team had worked with more than 4,000 businesses smashing its own target of 500, and in this respect the situation is improving. Sheffield also has a reputation – and data to support it – that many graduates remain in the city after their time at the two universities. Many of these are the bedrock of the new spirit of entrepreneurism that has breathed new life into the city’s multi-faceted economy. Consultant editor Andy Waple looks at why the Sheffield City Region is a great place for new growing businesses to flourish. Along with a round-up of local business news, that is just a taste of what is in this issue of First For Business. Let us know what you think by tweeting us @ffbmagRMC

SALES GURU PHIL M JONES “The difference between you and someone like you can be as simple as knowing exactly what to say, when to say it and how to make it count.” Best-selling author, multiple awardwinner and one of the most sought after speakers on the circuit, Phil M Jones is highly regarded as one of the world’s leading sales trainers. Phil entered the world of business at 14, washing cars at the weekend at 15, and at the age of 18, he was offered the roles of sales manager at Debenhams – making him the youngest sales manager in the company’s history. His early career went from strength to strength and in 2008 he decided it was time to make his own mark on the world. Taking everything he’d learnt about sales, he created a one-day workshop where he trained 2,500 people
CRAFTY SORT JAMES BROWN “Big things start from the smallest beginnings. Being at MADE could be the inspiration you were looking for to disrupt yourself, your business or processes to break the mould and try something new. Taking that first step could be the catalyst that sends you on a brand new and exciting adventure.” James Brown, founder of Beer52, was inspired to start his career after a craft beer trip on the back of his dad’s Harley. Beer52 was launched in 2013 and is now the UK’s largest and fastest growing online craft beer club with over 25,000 monthly members and backed by founders of SkyScanner, Secret Escapes, Funkin Cocktails and SongKick. James was Young Entrepreneur of the Year in 2014 and also labelled as one of the six top young entrepreneurs to watch in the UK by Forbes along with being labelled Business of the Year by Startups. As the company is based online,

simply head to www.beer52.com and tell them what you like, their experts then select the best beers to be delivered to your door and then simply sit back and enjoy – if you want to you can rate and review to become a master taster. The company also produce an in-house craft alcohol magazine – Ferment, which is available in WHSmith stores nationwide and is also included in member’s deliveries. With the turnover on track to £5million in 2017 and millions of bottles of craft beer delivered to doorsteps all around the UK, James and his Beer52 adventure are proof that great things can start from the most unexpected and humble beginnings.
before licensing his training to the UK, Switzerland, Australia and New Zealand. As he plunged deeper into the world of sales training, he became uncomfortable with the style of information the marketplace was glorifying. Sales he believed was all about hype – the only thing that seemed to matter was results. Phil has made it his life’s work to completely demystify the sales process, and bring both simplicity and integrity to the sales world. From working with small business owners that are looking to increase sales to leverage their livelihood to globally recognised companies that want to drive more activity from their staff – Phil’s unique skillset allows him to serve a vast mix of people with entirely different goals, making him one of the most practical and in-demand sales trainers. This year at MADE Festival prepare to be blown away by Phil’s immersive talk and learn his magic words that will stand you above the rest.
MADE ENTREPRENEUR FESTIVAL
SUCCESS STORY 1: JUMP INC TRAMPOLINE PARK Jump Inc Trampoline Park is all about spring-loaded fun. It is a place where jumpers can get some air and bounce off the walls in a safe and controlled environment. Based in Rotherham, the park is packed with activities to suit everyone – from open jump to slam dunk to walk the wall. Their interconnected trampolines mean it can be as easy or as challenging as you like – meaning it doesn’t matter what your skill level is. “Trampoline parks were a huge success in the USA and Australia. So, the market was very small when Jump Inc. first launched in November 2015 in the UK. We strive to be the market leaders with our branding, innovation and safety, with a strong focus on our community, health and well-being,” said Dan Glover, regional community manager. “Last year MADE showed us real life stories of success, and demonstrated that you can get there through hard work, determination and passion. Not only that but it helped bring our ideas into reality.”
“Since the opening in 2015, we now have three successful sites open in Yorkshire, employ over 150 members of staff and have a turnover of more than £5million. We’ve also seen over 600,000 customers visit our parks. What’s exciting is we are launching a new trampoline to be opened early next year,” adds Dan. Since MADE 2016, the company have launched three Jump Inc sites, joined the nonexecutive board of Cash for Kids and are part of the Health and Wellbeing Forum for the Sheffield region. “For me, as an entrepreneur, attending MADE boosted my confidence by hearing some truly great success stories. It was also motivating and reassured me that nothing is impossible. “People should attend MADE to be inspired and motivated and most importantly see their dreams become a reality.”
SUCCESS STORY 2: EVERYDAY JUICE LIMITED Everyday Juice Limited create remarkable places to work with healthy and happy people. The company was born within higher education and works within the NHS, SMEs and in the private sector. Juice brings an employer’s health and wellbeing offer under one easy to navigate roof, whilst delivering a recognisable identity. Juice gives staff opportunity to learn through the weekly updated Health Hub, along with connecting with the wider organisation through on-site activities. In 2016 it was recognised by The Sunday Times by being awarded the Top 100 Health and Wellbeing Special Award.
“Following the launch of Juice at the University of Sheffield we saw significant levels of engagement and growth in the scheme. Andy Dodman (then University HRD, now COO) and I presented about Juice at conferences in multiple sectors and various organisations from a range of sectors asked for our assistance. We knew that other organisations shared similar challenges to ours; they cared about staff health and wellbeing but struggled with navigation, communication, and innovation, so Everyday Juice Limited (EJL) was born,” said Gary Butterfield co-founder of Juice and executive director of Everyday Juice Limited.
“I’ve attended MADE for the past five years and always leave inspired to push EJL to the next level. The presentation line-up has an inclusive, informative and diverse approach, where there are guaranteed takeaways for anyone from any type of business.” “The event showcases the very best of what is a fantastic city for small businesses and highlights Sheffield’s support for entrepreneurship,” adds Gary. Since MADE 2016, EJL and the Juice offer has seen significant growth, with a larger number of universities using the Juice platform along with working with partners with multiple health and wellbeing disciplines. Also EJL has incorporated the new economics foundations – five ways to wellbeing. “If you want to grow yourself, your business, your network or the skills of the team then the MADE Festival is a key conference to attend each year. Had I not attended, especially in my earlier years of being a business leader, I don’t think I would have easily harnessed some of the skills required to run a company.”

FERTILE SOIL FOR START-UPS ANDY WAPLE LOOKS AT WHY THE SHEFFIELD CITY REGION IS A GREAT PLACE FOR NEW GROWING BUSINESSES TO FLOURISH.
AGENDA
D
espite its reputation in some quarters as being ‘anti-business’, Sheffield has had its fair share of entrepreneurs over the centuries. From the early days of cutlery manufacturing through to today’s age of high technology, someone has always been at hand to come up with the next big idea. And the good news is that data suggests that Sheffield and its wider region are well placed to attract and support startups and the self-employed to grow their businesses. Figures from Start Up Britain reveal that 2,285 new start-ups established themselves in Sheffield in 2015. Survival rate between 2010-2015 was 41.8 per cent, comparing well with other major cities and better than its nearest rival, Leeds. Start-ups appear in all sectors, and with a strong background in manufacturing, technology and IT, the city is considered to be a good destination for new digital businesses and biotechnology companies to flourish. Some put it down to the ease of home working and even TV programmes such as Dragons Den that have made the concept of entrepreneurship trendy. “Starting a business is easier, quicker and

David Grimes, head of the Growth Hub, said when the figures were revealed: “This is a very pleasing set of figures. The Growth Hub and its partners have been working extremely hard to help create growth and jobs across the region, and I am delighted that so many people have taken advantage of our services. “This demonstrates there is a huge appetite for businesses to grow and create jobs and prosperity across the region.” He added: “Enterprise has always been at the heart of what we do in this region. “It's a tribute to the hard work ethos

here which is helping to attract, retain and develop skills in the region which are so important for sustainable growth." In addition, small firms and incoming companies can turn to Business Sheffield for free start-up and growth support. Business Sheffield, the support agency run by the city council backed organisation, Creative Sheffield, gives free support to those looking to start a business, become selfemployed or expand. While offering sound advice, the service gives honest appraisals on the chances of success and gives assistance on the formulation of business plans, pricing, accountancy and tax issues. Its enterprise coaching team runs group coaching sessions covering all these aspects of starting a business. Meanwhile businesses in the tech and biotech sectors are particularly well served in Sheffield via Dotforge, the city’s successful accelerator programme. Targeted at tech start-ups, the three-stage programme takes businesses from seed stage to raising their first round of investment through a combination of pre-seed capital, mentoring and collaborative office space. Both of Sheffield’s universities continue to support businesses and their students who wish to remain in the city and go on to become entrepreneurs post graduation. The University of Sheffield’s bioincubator scheme provides office and lab space for spin-outs, start-ups and entrepreneurs wanting to colocate on campus and take advantage of the facilities and research the university offers. It also runs a number of collaboration programmes and partnerships with local businesses to achieve common goals. Hallam University’s Sheffield Business School supports students and local companies providing a learning and development programme designed to train up-and-coming staff to become future leaders and managers.

GROWTH HUB LAUNCHES NEW VIDEO TO AID LOCAL ENTERPRISE Businesses from across the Sheffield City Region are playing their part in inspiring others by revealing their success stories in a new video launched last month. Ranging from a brewery to a machining company, they have all been aided in their plans by the Growth Hub and appear in the video to talk about the help they received. The video has been made to raise awareness among the region’s 68,000 businesses of the services the Growth Hub can provide or signpost to. David Grimes, Head of the Sheffield City Region Growth Hub, said: “From Bolsover to Barnsley, Sheffield to Chesterfield, our City Region is brimming with people who have the ideas and vision needed to put us on the map. It’s inspiring to see what’s been achieved by the Growth Hub so far and with the help of this video we can hopefully make more businesses aware so that more firms can then go on to achieve their own success stories. “With the launch of the video we hope to
widen the number of firms we are able to reach – and raise awareness of the support which is available to our regional businesses. The range of support on offer can seem complex and overwhelming at times. But our message to local businesses is clear: the support is there, it’s about finding out which kind of support is best for your business and your growth plans and we can help you do that.” Included in the video is Sheffield firm Reach Homes, which accessed finance via the Growth Hub to develop a prototype affordable eco-home made from used shipping containers. Reach Homes has won a Sustainable Innovation Award at London Design Week thanks to founder Jon Johnson and his team’s innovative prototype home at Heeley City Farm, using 60 per cent reclaimed materials, which is set to be further developed with a 70-home pilot. Engineering firm PCT used Access to Finance support via the Growth Hub to purchase a new £550,000 fibre laser cutter to grow its manufacturing capacity.

INSPIRING THE NEXT GENERATION OF ENTREPRENEURS IS ALL IN A DAY’S WORK FOR PUBLIC SPEAKER BRAD BURTON. HIS APPEARANCE AT MADE ENTREPRENEUR FESTIVAL IS THE TALK OF THE TOWN.
‘MR MOTIVATOR’
MADE ENTREPRENEUR FESTIVAL
o one does it quite like Brad Burton. With his unique approach to life, business and motivation, he fires people up from all walks of life giving them the confidence to take the first step into becoming an entrepreneur.
N
In 2005, Brad reinvented business networking with his company 4Networking, the only joined up business network in the UK, and today, 4Networking has over 100,000 members, with over 5,000 meetings across the country. This multi-talented businessman has written four books – most recently Now What? – becoming one of the highest rated business authors on Amazon, and is also an in-demand public speaker and business consultant. He knows how to motivate and inspire, and with his high energy, humorous and thought-provoking talks, the audience at MADE festival are sure to be left with ideas flowing. Here’s Brad talking about his business, speaking at MADE festival and offering up some top tips on being successful. Tell us about your business. I am the founder of a company called 4Networking, which is the largest UK joined up business organisation. I’m also an author of four books and more recently – in the past seven years or so – I am a motivational speaker. I run my own personal development events around the UK. How did you get to where you are today? Twelve years ago I was delivering pizzas, had been on benefits for four years and didn’t have any qualifications to my name. Really, how I got where I am today is by having an idea, vision and belief, along with staying the course over the 12 years as there have been times when I wanted to give up but I never did. Another big part of my determination is my little boy, who I promised to take to
Disneyland. I wanted to live up to that promise – which I have – so, to achieve this, changed my outlook and mission. What would be one of the highlights of your career? The highlight of my career is that I can be myself and a success. The amount of times people have said to me that it’ll never work and that I couldn’t become a motivational speaker, but actually, when I get booked by events like MADE, it’s amazing. Doing it my own way, even though it can be considered unconventional, does work and it’s the reason I am where I am today. Tell us about your venture BradCamp. I teach people how to write books and speak professionally within a small workshop that runs four times a year around the UK. If someone asked me to give them advice on how to become a speaker, and I had one day to do it, this would be that. I also hold the Now What? seminar which is an all-day event on downloading the brain. I basically get people into the entrepreneur mindset and both workshops are a decade of experience crammed into one day. I don’t hold anything back and put a reality pin in the balloon of the speaking ‘game’. These events are not about them becoming motivational speakers or becoming me, but all about them finding their own voice. For anyone else starting a business what advice would you give? It is going to take four times longer than your original business plan, so prepare yourself for the long journey. Make certain that money isn’t your sole motivation as when it gets tough you’ll need something bigger and more meaningful to keep you going. What will be one of the highlights of the MADE festival for you? The whole event is a highlight. I think MADE is more than just one event, it is
the Super Bowl from an entrepreneur’s point of view. It’s the ethos, culture and vibe that makes it different from other shows. The whole idea that you can do it starts when you believe in yourself. From MADE, you are going to get that belief in yourself, as the festival shines a light on your ideas and vision. I started my business with ideas, vision and belief, and that is what you are going to get – it is the starting point of your future. What is one key thing you hope people will take away from your talks? Your successes or failures in business are going to be defined by your ability to make decisions – good and bad ones. If you look at me, the reason that I am where I am now is because I have made better decisions. Why do you think it is important to educate and inspire entrepreneurs and business owners? There is no formal education for entrepreneurs, so coming to MADE is an important first step. The first good decision you can make is going to the festival and getting yourself educated and inspired, because if you don’t, you are missing out on starting your business. What are your top tips on being successful? Be yourself and don’t try and replicate someone else. If you are not being 100 per cent yourself, you aren’t being successful. The reason we do anything in life should be to make us happy, so make sure that you are doing that in your personal life as well as your business life. Also, make certain that you don’t end up sick as a result of your success. From someone who has been there, I urge people to slow down and see the road ahead, be able to adapt and don’t be rigid, take the diversions and detours if you need too. CUP OF CHEER SUCCESSFUL ENTREPRENEUR, AND GUEST SPEAKER AT MADE ENTREPRENEUR FESTIVAL, SAHAR HASHEMI TALKS COFFEE, CANDY AND FATHERLY ADVICE. ahar Hashemi OBE founded Coffee Republic, the UK’s first US style coffee bar chain with her brother, building it into one of the UK’s most recognised street brands with 110 bars and a turnover of £30million.
S
Giving up their professional careers – Sahar as a lawyer and her brother Bobby an independent banker – they staked everything on a dream, making Coffee Republic one of the main players in the coffee revolution that changed the UK high street. In 2001 Sahar left the day-to-day management of Coffee Republic and published a bestselling book Anyone Can Do It: Building Coffee Republic from our Kitchen Table. She’s then published Switched On in 2010, focusing on eight habits that foster a more entrepreneurial mindset for employees. It’s based on her experience of the transformation in culture when a small entrepreneurial company becomes big and successful. “When we started Coffee Republic we thought of our inexperience as a disadvantage, and made up for it by immersing ourselves in the world of coffee, drinking as many lattes as was physically possible,” said Sahar. “We were like sponges, starting every morning in an old-style coffee bar, absorbing every little detail, learning with the curiosity of children, without any presuppositions. We didn’t know much about anything and just had a vision of 18 First For Business | www.ffb-online.co.uk
how we wanted things to be done.” “Our cluelessness kept us pushing forward and allowed us to ignore the naysayers. It gave us a fresh outlook on coffee bars, which had been around for centuries, so we were able to offer customers something new and exciting, not just a variation on the same old,” adds Sahar. In 2005, Sahar founded Skinny Candy, a brand of sugar-free sweets which was sold to confectionary conglomerate Glisten PLC in 2007. “I started both my businesses because of an unmet personal need: Coffee Republic because I couldn’t find skinny lattes and Skinny Candy because I couldn’t find guilt-free sweets. So in both cases the focus was entirely on my own needs – the need of the customer.” In 2011 Sahar was nominated by Director magazine as one of its Top 10 original thinkers. The magazine praised her view that: “entrepreneurially minded talent shouldn’t have to leave large corporations in order to achieve fulfilment. Entrepreneurial behaviour, including ideas like bootstrapping, prototyping and celebrating failure, can help turn stuffy corporations into creative environments. They can also transform automatons into valued, engaged employees.” Following this she was invited to join the Entrepreneurs Forum set up by UK business secretary, Vince Cable to give
informal personal advice to the government on enterprise policies. Sahar is also co-chair of the Government’s ‘Scale-Up Taskforce’ and in 2012 she was awarded on OBE for her services to the UK economy and her contributions to charities. “The best advice I was ever given wasn’t from a successful entrepreneur nor a business book. It was from my dad who said ‘just do your best and let God do the rest’. It was simple and life-changing for me.” “I have taken this advice with me throughout my life and believe because of this I have had the confidence to try new things, venture out, start businesses and write books,” adds Sahar. Sahar is an internationally recognised thought leader and speaker on innovation and entrepreneurship. This year she will be the MADE festival, sharing her entrepreneurial story with budding entrepreneurs and small businesses. Her presentations are unique and through story-telling Sahar is able to connect with audiences on an emotional level, bringing to life her conviction that entrepreneurial behaviour is needed in every business.

ADVICE & STRATEGY IF YOU’RE TAKING YOUR FIRST STEPS INTO THE WORLD OF BUSINESS, OR NEED CONTINUING ADVICE, KNOWLES WARWICK ARE WELL PLACED TO HELP.
eing a business owner is one of the most rewarding careers there is, but it isn’t without its challenges. Entrepreneurs need all the support they can get when branching out on their own. And that’s where Knowles Warwick comes in.
B
Specialising in business advice and strategy, Knowles Warwick is a firm of chartered accountants with a difference. Established in 1985 by Steve Knowles, the firm has continued to grow and help clients to achieve their dreams and ambitions for the last three decades. From the start, Knowles Warwick has always been at the forefront of innovation within the accounting industry, and that hasn’t changed. Last year the firm introduced its new mobile app, allowing clients to access their financial information securely from any device, as well as keeping users up to date with tax deadlines and the latest business and finance news. With the upcoming introduction of ‘Making Tax Digital’, the firm has been busy preparing for the imminent changes, helping to implement online accounting software and educating clients about the
new requirements. The Knowles Warwick app includes secure access to a range of the most popular software, including Xero and Quickbooks. Cloud accounting has allowed the Knowles Warwick team to work from anywhere, whether that’s their own offices in Sheffield, their clients’ premises, or even further afield. Modern technology also means that clients can contact their accountant at any time and expect a fast response, and when a faceto-face meeting isn’t possible, a phone call or Skype conversation always is. Knowles Warwick prides itself on a professional and personal service for all, and with clients from across the UK and worldwide, that can take many shapes. The relationship between accountant and client may have changed considerably since Steve Knowles first started out in business, but it is still the same at its core. Knowles Warwick’s one aim has always been to help clients achieve both their professional, financial and personal goals, and that ethos remains to this day. The firm offers a virtual financial director service, meaning they take full responsibility for the client’s
financial affairs, allowing the business owner to focus on what they do best: running their business. With big changes coming to the industry next year, Knowles Warwick is looking forward to the opportunity to continue the firm’s progression and make their clients’ lives easier by embracing new technology and staying at the forefront of innovation. Exciting times lie ahead for accountants and business owners alike.

The even more powerful S variant costs £75,670. As well as the SUV model, the sleek new GLC 63 4MATIC+ Coupe is also available for £71,410 and the S model for £78,160.
POWER, PRECISION AND PERSONALISATION... JORDAN CUTFORTH ROUNDS-UP THIS MONTH’S NEWS.
Both models come with a 4.0-litre biturbo V8 petrol engine, mated to an AMG Speedshift MCT nine-speed sports transmission. Non-S variants produce 476hp and 650Nm of torque, and can sprint from 0-62 mph in just four seconds. The GLC 63 S has an output of 510hp and 700Nm – it can reach 62mph from standstill in 3.8 seconds.
ALL THAT JAZZ A fresh look and new engine has been bestowed upon the Honda Jazz.
KEEP IN TRIM To add a little spice to the Peugeot 108’s line-up, the French company has added two new trim levels – the Collection and TOP! Roland Garros trim.
To align the Jazz into the Honda family style, the front incorporates the ‘Solid Wing Face’ headlight signature and grille, more sharply sculptured front bumper and aggressive contours around the air vents while the rear, shallower grille sections are linked by a gloss black trim strip above a trapezoid lower section. An addition of metallic Skyride Blue is a new colour option too. A new 128hp petrol engine is added to the range and achieves 52.3mpg and 124 g/km of CO2. Standard equipment includes the likes of cruise control, automatic headlights, CityBrake Active safety system. Higher grades feature a seven-inch Honda Connect infotainment system, rear-view parking camera and keyless entry and start.
Featuring a high degree of personalisation, the Peugeot 108 Collection allows owners to get creative with the car. It comes in a choice of five exterior colours with contrasting interior ambiance. The exterior is embellished with ‘speed’ decals and comes with 15-inch alloy wheels, while on the interior the theme continues with personalised carpet mats and door sills plus leather steering wheel and gear knob. Added practicality comes in the form of a seven-inch colour touchscreen, colour reversing camera, electric and heated door mirrors and Peugeot’s Open & Go keyless entry system.
RARE ADDITIONS Following the Vanquish Zagato Coupe and Volante last year, Aston Martin has rounded up the ultra rare Zagato series with the Zagato Speedster and Shooting Brake. Possibly the prettiest looking cars ever created (that’s open to interpretation), the Vanquish Zagato is one of the rarest cars ever made with just 325 cars built worldwide. The Zagato Speedster is a roofless work of art with speed humps which rise up to form streamlined cowls that flow back from the seats. The Shooting Brake is a strict two-seater, but one conceived as an individual and exceptionally practical GT. Its extended roofline will certainly be an eye-catching sight on the road. All are powered by a 6.0-litre naturally aspirated V12. Expect to see them on the road in 2018.

B&B Vehicle Contracts provided two BMW i3s to help Sheffield United reduce its carbon footprint
B&B VEHICLE CONTRACTS IS PROUD TO DO ITS BIT IN BACKING A RANGE OF LOCAL GOOD CAUSES.
E
stablished in 1997, B&B Vehicle Contracts has long been a local source of support for customers, not only providing the highest quality contract vehicles, but also outstanding value, a no-hassle service and impartial guidance. With a customer base predominantly across the Sheffield City Region – but also spanning the UK from Scotland to Cornwall – B&B is proud to call itself a ‘local company’, and it has a proven reputation as a business you can trust, meaning customers are assured of personal attention while also benefiting from a flexible and proactive approach, expert guidance and a range of support.
24 First For Business | www.ffb-online.co.uk
Having built up a loyal customer base, which includes major national companies and clients ranging in size from sole traders to fleets of 200, B&B Vehicles is now applying its expertise and ability to making a difference in the local community – supporting a number of worthy causes and services, including providing minibuses for council-run schools, private schools and academies. Most recently, director Steve Barker swung into action at the annual Dan Walker charity golf tournament, to raise funds for The Children’s Hospital Charity. “As one of only four specialist children’s hospitals in the country, Sheffield
Children’s Hospital is so deserving of support,” says Steve. “One annual game of golf makes a huge difference and we’re honoured to have played a part in raising funds for a very important cause.” Retired English professional footballer, Jermaine Jenas wasn’t able to lead the team of local business men to victory at the Hallamshire Golf Club event, but they did help drive funds to a colossal £50,000. Which will play a key role in the hospital’s delivery of nuclear medicine, enabling radiologists to scan children with suspected cancerous tumours, epilepsy, painful injuries or neurodisabilities, using a SPECT CT scanner, and takes the total raised to a staggering

B&B director Steve Barker took part in the annual Dan Walker golf day in aid of Sheffield Children’s Hospital
B&B also recently supplied City Taxis with a Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV; used to take renal patients to hospital for essential dialysis appointments, and provided Sheffield United with two BMW i3s, to help the club towards its ‘Going Green’ scheme; an attempt to reduce its carbon footprint within the city whilst also reducing its travel costs. And that’s not all. For the last four years, B&B have been a proud sponsor of Sheffield Theatres, showing support by providing vehicles which are used for everything from transporting props to visiting school. Earlier this year they also became principal sponsors of the Rotherham Titans rugby union team. “I am delighted that B&B Vehicle Contracts has decided to become a principal sponsor of our club,” says chairman, Nick Cragg. “They have provided an excellent, cost-effective service to Stafforce and the Nicholas Associate Group in supplying leased vehicles.” Such is B&B’s reputation and success, they made the move to a larger premises on Fairfield Road, Chesterfield in 2015, and there they continue to offer the widest choice of vehicles, finance options and support services. Providing a quality service which conforms to rigorous standards, and making sure the process of
contract hiring vehicles is straight-forward and cost-effective. “We work hard with all our clients to meet their needs and make sure we take care of everything to take the hassle out of car leasing.” Steve says. “We know that no two businesses are the same, and each will have different vehicle funding and management needs, so we offer a variety of solutions in order to give our customers complete flexibility and cost efficiency.
“We also offer comprehensive maintenance packages on vehicles to avoid unexpected costs for our customers.”

PARTY ON CHRISTMAS IS ON THE HORIZON SO IT’S TIME TO START PLANNING FOR A TRULY MEMORABLE OFFICE DO.
T
he countdown to the festival party season is on With the warm weather drawing to the close and summer holidays a distant memory, it can only mean one thing the countdown to Christmas and the festive party season is on. This December, across the Sheffield City Region work colleagues will be putting on their glad rags and enjoying a drink – or - together. A well organised party in a quality, popular venue can give dedicated, hardworking staff something fun to look forward to as the year draws to a close. It is not only good for team morale but a great bonding experience for all.
The key to a really memorable Christmas work ‘do’ is to make sure it is booked well in advance, so you’re not left to find out every venue is fully booked, leaving the only option to be an office party, telling cheesy Christmas cracker jokes whilst dancing around the photocopier to Bowie.
dance evening or a traditional turkey meal with all the trimmings at a cosy pub, there are plenty of venues to choose from that can accommodate your festive plans, whether you are a small business with a handful of staff, or a huge organisation with hundreds of employees.
It doesn’t have to be the manager who is tasked with the booking of the party either. Hand the party planning over to the one in the office who loves to socialise, as they will relish the task of getting everyone on board and booking a fantastic Christmas party.
So, no matter what the budget or scale of your party get into the Christmas spirit and get your party booked now.
So whether it’s a lavish five-course spread at a top restaurant, a dinner and

n today’s age of high technology, communication is often taken for granted. Phone calls are made, emails are sent and tweets are posted continually throughout the day. But research shows that we are more likely to do business with someone we’ve met face-to-face, and that employee team-building activities – such as awaydays – can improve communication, develop leadership skills, facilitate creative problem solving and boost teamwork. Companies of all shapes and sizes and from all sectors regularly hold events across the region, whether it’s to launch a new product, build relationships with
clients, network with others from within the industry, motivate staff or interview new prospective employees. Fortunately, businesses within the Sheffield City Region couldn’t be better placed. We have a vast array of venues suitable for any event, ranging from historic stately homes and former steelworks to modern hotels and conference centres. It’s not surprising, therefore, that year after year our region is chosen to host all kinds of events, from banquets to exhibitions. This year, for example, the region not only attracted Yorkshire’s greatest cycle race, the Tour de Yorkshire,
but will also host several large scale events such as FrontEndNorth, Global Startup Weekend, SheffEX and the MADE Festival. Whether you wish to hire a room to conduct interviews, a hall for an exhibition or a whole venue for an away-day and overnight accommodation, there is somewhere suitable just on your doorstep. First For Business enjoys a great relationship with many of the region’s finest venues and is pleased to present a selection here. Of course, our region offers so much more but this is a great place to start.

SHEFFIELD MP PAUL BLOMFIELD HAS BEEN OUT AND ABOUT LISTENING TO WHAT HIS CONSTITUENTS HAVE TO SAY. HERE HE TELLS HANNAH SANDERS WHY HIS BIG CONVERSATION CAN SPARK POSITIVE CHANGE.
P
aul Blomfield, MP for Sheffield Central has been running a month of events across his constituency to listen to local views and set his priorities for the parliamentary year ahead. This is the sixth year Blomfield has held The Big Conversation. Events included open meetings, café and pub drop-ins and street surgery visits across Sheffield Central. He also visited schools to hear the views of young people along with meeting community groups. In previous years, issues raised have informed his work in Parliament such as a successful campaign to regulate payday lenders for which he was voted Citizen’s Advice MP of the Year in 2014.
Talking the talk: Paul Blomfield
WHY IT’S GOOD TO TALK
“The Big Conversation is a great opportunity to listen to as many people as possible across the constituency. Thousands of people have got involved and made their voices heard,” said Blomfield.
“What people tell me shapes my work in Parliament. I raise the issues I hear about with the Government and secure positive change that helps the community.” Paul Blomfield has been MP for Sheffield Central since 2010. Before his election, he was the general manager of the University of Sheffield’s Students’ Union,
40 First For Business | www.ffb-online.co.uk
and between 1997 and 2008 was the chair of the Sheffield City Trust. In 2016, Blomfield was appointed as a shadow minister in Labour’s Brexit team, led by the shadow secretary of state for exiting the European Union, Keir Starmer MP. He was also previously a member of parliament’s business and skills committee, where his interests included further and higher education, science and innovation, and skills and apprenticeships.
“I stood for Parliament first in 2010 because I wanted to find new ways of connecting people with politics. I have taken on a number of jobs in Parliament, but listening to constituents is what drives my politics because it tells me the issues that need to be raised in Westminster.” For more information on The Big Conversation visit www.paulblomfield.co.uk/ thebigconversation

As part of The Big Conversation, Paul Blomfield held a special consultation event - The Big Breakfast - for small businesses at the Burton Street Foundation, in association with the Federation of Small Businesses. “Small businesses are vital to Sheffield and the national economy, providing 60 per cent of all private sector jobs,” said Paul. “This event is a great opportunity for local businesses to tell me about their challenges and how the government can help them to succeed and grow.” In previous years businesses have raised concerns surrounding issues including apprenticeships, bank lending, business rates and barriers to public procurement. This year, Paul took the opportunity to talk to businesses about their views on Brexit, priorities for the EU negotiations, along with issues surrounding transport, financial pressures, devolution and data protection. Here he explains the aims of The Big Conversation, the importance of these events and the process of getting issues resolved in government. Tell us about The Big Conversation and the initial idea behind it. “I launched this event soon after I became an MP because for me, if I am to do my job properly, it is important to hear what the people I represent are saying and find out about their concerns. It is a good opportunity for those in my constituencies to come and see me, raise their concerns and make me aware of any problems they are facing. “ What do hope people get from coming to the individual events? “I hope they will get an opportunity to engage directly with me. For me I get enormous value out of hearing issues and talking about the ways in which these can be resolved. I hope people get the satisfaction of knowing that contact with myself as a representative can lead to real change. “
Why is The Big Breakfast an important event for the local community? “Small businesses are the driver of the economy, so hearing about what these businesses want the government to do in order to help them continue to be a driver of economic growth and creators of jobs is important.” What do you hope individuals take away from The Big Conversation events? “I hope they will take away the satisfaction that they have been listened to. I hope they know that I will follow up with everyone on the points raised and demonstrate what I have done in Parliament. I want people to have a sense that politics can work for them and that what happens in Westminster isn’t irrelevant - it affects their lives and engaging with me as their MP gives them the opportunity to influence change.” What effects will Brexit have on Sheffield’s economy – especially small businesses? It depends enormously on what deal the Government does and, as a shadow Brexit minister, that’s taking up a huge amount of my time. Hearing about business views is important as if we leave the EU on wrong terms, it could have a big effect.
“I’ve heard from businesses in manufacturing that are deeply concerned about crashing out of the EU Customs Union and the impact it will have on their ability to trade across Europe. “We simply can’t reach an agreement and walk away from Europe without a deal. The impact on businesses, the economy and therefore on people’s jobs and livelihood is going to be huge. “ Of the issues that have been raised at The Big Breakfast, what will you focus on and what is the process to getting issues resolved? “There have been a lot of issues raised and we’ve obviously had a significant conversation around Brexit. I listened very carefully about what people had to say. “I’ve also heard thoughts on issues which are not a surprise but are nevertheless important, such as questions surrounding business rates, along with some very powerful points on transport infrastructure and the need for further investment in the North. “I also heard about businesses in the social care sector and the financial pressures that have been put on them. So there was a vast range of issues raised, resulting in an immensely valuable morning. “

Racing for the fourth edition will begin or end in Barnsley, Beverley, Doncaster, Halifax, Ilkley, Leeds, Richmond and Scarborough.
The firm will find out whether it’s successful in its category on Wednesday October 18 at a glittering ceremony at the Hilton Park Lane Hotel in London. Managing director, Nick Wilson, said: “We are thrilled to have been shortlisted for this award, which is recognition of all the hard work put in by everyone in the firm.”
WORK & PLAY A MONTHLY ROUND-UP OF NEWS, ACHIEVEMENTS, CELEBRATIONS AND NEW FACES
The Asda Women’s Tour de Yorkshire – which is doubling in size from one to two days – will be held from 3-4 May. Sir Gary Verity, chief executive of Welcome to Yorkshire, said: “The Tour de Yorkshire is a true success story and in just three years it has grown to become one of the best attended and most dramatic races on the cycling calendar. “Of course, with the men’s race being extended to four days and the women’s race now being held over two, it means we can visit more parts of the county and I know our eight start and finish locations will put on a real show.” Christian Prudhomme, director of the Tour de France at the ASO, added: “The Tour de Yorkshire has gone from strength to strength over the last three years and we are delighted to be working in partnership with such a great team at Welcome to Yorkshire. The way people get behind the race in Yorkshire is incredible and we are looking forward to another fantastic edition in 2018.”
IKEA SHEFFIELD OPEN FOR BUSINESS
Julie Harrington, chief executive of British Cycling, believes the event is “shaping up to be the best yet”.
Councillor Jack Scott, cabinet member for transport and infrastructure, said: “I’m delighted that IKEA is here and know that its store will be a big success. The store has excellent tram links with a Supertram station just yards away.
The full 2018 race route will be unveiled on 5 December 2017 and will include exact start and finish locations, as well as the distance and profile of each stage.
“IKEA Sheffield backs on to the Sheffield to Tinsley Canal and can be accessed by cycle or on foot. I want people to look at these options but, if they have to drive, to allow plenty of time to do so and to follow updates from Highways England or radio traffic announcements.”

Sheffield’s £60million IKEA store opened at the end of September and the company is already anticipating good business. Work on the project began in late 2016 after Clugston Construction secured the contract to work on the 340,000 sq. ft. flagship store. Ikea is the only store in the country to have a tram stop, Carbrook, on its doorstep and shoppers are being encouraged to use it as an alternative to beat the traffic queues.

£300MILLION MEADOWHALL EXTENSION PLANS APPROVED Sheffield City Council has approved plans to build a £300million extension to Meadowhall shopping centre. The extension will transform the centre’s car park into a new retail destination known as The Leisure Hall. In a move that almost directly contradicts their commitment to regenerating The Moor and increasing footfall into Sheffield’s city centre, councillors voted unanimously in favour of the plans, which will see a 1.1million sq. ft. extension built across multiple levels. The new development will be built on the yellow deck, and part of the red deck, of the centre’s car park, and incorporated within the redeveloped site will be new restaurants, a cinema to replace the existing cinema, a new café court, gym and additional leisure space to offer new experiences and activities. At £300million, it’s the biggest investment British Land has committed to Meadowhall since the centre opened in 1990, but concerns have been raised about congestion around the centre leading to increased pollution and health problems, and the impact of the centre on the region’s city centres. In an attempt to ease concerns, British Land and IKEA, which opened at the end of September, have committed millions to easing congestion in the area. And the Leisure Hall is predicted to create more than 1,000 jobs.
