PREVIEW
AUGUST 2015

PREVIEW he skills shortage is an issue that seems to raise its head around this time every year as a new batch of school leavers prepares to make its way in the world. The big question is: have they been properly trained to thrive in the modern workplace?
T
No doubt the debate will continue for years to come, but behind the scenes Sheffield City Region has been addressing the issue on a practical level and coming up with some real success stories. Three years ago the Cutlers’ Company, together with Sheffield City Council, launched the Made in Sheffield Skills and Ambassadors Programme, otherwise known as the Cutlers’ Curriculum. It is a subject particularly close to the heart of Doug Liversidge, Chairman of the Cutlers’ Education Committee. Back in the 17th century the Cutlers’ Company encouraged its Freemen to teach their apprentices to read and write; now the state is responsible foe the basic education of young people, he sees this as an opportunity to bridge the gap between school and the skills businesses need. The aim of the project from the outset was to bring business and education together, preparing teenagers for the
world of work and giving them the skills they need to succeed while also giving businesses the home-grown talent necessary for growth. This month in First For Business we take a close look behind the scenes at the Cutler’s Curriculum, meeting some of the young people who responded to the opportunities available and are now thriving in the world of work, or are looking to continue their studies with Alevels and university in their sights. Apprenticeships can offer a fast-track to a better career for young people and can also help businesses tailor-make a more skilled workforce. In our Expanding Horizons supplement we speak to employers and apprentices to find out why apprentices are proving such a popular option. Recruitment is not the only major problem facing employers today – making sure they get the best out of existing staff is also a vital problem. Many firms these days have annual work appraisals, giving employees the chance for a one-to-one with the management. It should be an opportunity to iron out problems, improve employeemanagement relations and clarify precisely what is expected in the workplace.
CHRIS WILSON, EDITOR However, it is fair to say that some people dread or even resent these yearly meetings. If not handled correctly they can cause friction and de-motivate the workforce. So, what is the right way to approach appraisals? The experts on our Dream Team have been giving it some serious thought. On to lighter matters and the world of motoring. Is the time approaching to change your car? Some old favourites are getting a new lease of life, as is revealed in our round-up of the latest new models appearing in a showroom near you this month. Along with Retail Matters – our in-depth look at the retail sector in Sheffield City Region courtesy of The Source Skills Academy – that is just a taste of what is in this edition of First For Business. Three years ago, the Cutlers’ Company, together with Sheffield City Council, launched the Made in Sheffield Skills and Ambassadors Programme, otherwise known as the Cutlers’ Curriculum. This is a significant education project which sees business and education working together in an unprecedented way. Its aim was to reconnect education

establishments and businesses by preparing teenagers for the world of work, providing them with the skills they need and giving businesses the homegrown talent necessary for growth. Doug Liversidge, as Chairman of the Cutlers’ Education Committee, is at the vanguard of the project. “The Cutlers’ Company has a long history of encouraging its Freemen to teach their apprentices to read and write,” he said. “That was back in the 17th century. Today the state ensures young people have these basic skills but their education does not extend to the skills businesses
need. It is that gap the Cutlers’ Company Curriculum is addressing with great success.” The Cutlers’ Curriculum works through the co-operation of schools, local authorities, training providers and manufacturing companies with all participants gaining an understanding of the necessary skills – above and beyond their academic qualifications. They are mentored by Freemen of the Company and successful completion of the programme earns every student a Passport to Employment and a guaranteed job interview.

AGENDA
Students are chosen for the scheme after an intensive selection process. At that point they become Ambassadors and begin a programme based on the Skills Framework. This is demand led, having been devised by employers to fulfil their needs – it includes problem solving, critical thinking, team work and communication skills. The difference between Made in Sheffield and other schemes is that engagement is by sector rather than by individual businesses. This allows a broader approach and means that a smaller business can get involved at a level which suits its capacity. Initially the programme ran with four schools and 48 students who gained experience and real life work skills in the manufacturing industry. Three years on, more than 600 students from 13 different schools are being mentored in the structured two-year work programme in 11 different sectors and many more are using the Skills Framework. In welcoming the students, teachers, parents and guests – some 460 in all – at the most recent passport ceremony, the
Master Cutler, David Grey, explained how being part of the Made in Sheffield programme would enhance the Ambassadors’ job prospects. “Qualifications are really important,” he said.
supporting a group of Ambassadors through the programme.
“They initially get you through the door but, after that, employers need evidence of competence, adaptability, flexibility, the willingness to take responsibility, communication, critical thinking, determination, creativity, team work and problem solving – all things which you have experienced over the past two years and which will stand you in good stead for your future employment.
This year, for the first time, 15 gold passports were awarded to those who had stood out as outstanding, making most progress or showing the greatest innovation.
“You will see your strengths and your weaknesses in your passports. Work on these. Push yourselves. We live in a very competitive world so make sure that you have the right skills and attitude to stand out from the crowd.” Employers willingly give their time to mentor these young Ambassadors, opening the doors of their workplaces and actively encouraging the students to take part in every aspect of their businesses. Some have taken on the additional role of Business Champion
The Passports to Employment which the Ambassadors earn are signed by an employer, the head teacher and the Master Cutler.
At the end of the presentations, two Ambassadors, Abbey Metcalfe and Mbachi Kambele, gave brief and clear talks on their experience emphasising that the scheme had, amongst other things, allowed them to significantly improve their confidence. If evidence were needed that this programme is working it was manifest in those two short speeches. The audience was impressed and one employer caught the mood when he was heard to say on departing: “I’d give them a job tomorrow”. The scheme is currently run for years 9 and 10 with passports being presented in year 11 but there is pressure to expand it in both directions.
INSPIRING YOUNG PEOPLE Get up to Speed with engineering and manufacturing – aka GUTS – was held at Magna earlier this year. John Barber of work-wise, which runs the Made in Sheffield programme for the Cutlers’ Company, said: “Get up to Speed is a big event we have staged for the past five years to enthuse and inspire young people to take up engineering as a career. This year we filled Magna with lots of shiny engineering attractions – an aeroplane, racing cars and the new eco-friendly hybrid BMW i8 supercar, which belongs to the Master Cutler. “More than 2,000 schoolchildren came to see what was on offer. The Cutlers’ Ambassadors helped us design the event and acted as hosts on the day – they wore bright orange t-shirts and gave visitors an insight into the displays. They were excellent.”
BRADFIELD AMBASSADORS – WINNERS Marie Cooper, finance director at the President Engineering Group, Cutlers’ Champion and business representative working with Bradfield school, saw her Year 9 Ambassadors (13/14 year-olds) win the work-wise innovation award – the competition sees companies linked with schools, presenting them with a business challenge or opportunity, which they work on together, presenting their finished work to a panel of judges from the business community. “Being involved in this programme has been very rewarding. We wanted to give Bradfield students an insight into what manufacturing and engineering is all about. There is a perception that it is greasy, dirty and grimy but that is not necessarily the case. We put a programme together that introduces them to all the different aspects of engineering. “We all try to open their eyes to what is available. The programme is making a huge difference to them. They develop a real understanding of business and they begin to get an idea of the career path they would like to take. I would like to open the programme up so that all students can take part.” >>>

supportive. I was really badly behaved but they still wanted me to stay on the programme and do well. “I hope now they can see that I was worth it.”

“I went to an accountancy firm for my first work experience but I did that on my own and decided it wasn’t for me. I then did two weeks at AMRC training centre with work-wise and that went really well. I enjoyed the environment and all the aspects of it. We learnt about team work and the principles of engineering as well as communication, co-operation and other key skills. We also did some practical stuff too and learnt how to use tools. I was really surprised at how much I enjoyed the hands-on engineering. I had never considered it as an option before. “After our presentation at the Cutlers’ Hall when I was named a Gold Ambassador, I emailed the Master Cutler and asked him if he would send my CV round to all those involved with the Cutlers’ Company. Within a week I was asked to go to an interview by Chesterfield Special Cylinders and they offered me a job, there and then. “I think I won the Gold award because when I first joined the scheme I wasn’t the best behaved student. I lacked concentration and I didn’t like working in a team but they helped me through that and showed they believed in me. I was very surprised that they were so

Riley Steer of Stocksbridge High School went to PEGL for his work experience.
Riley, 16, an engineering Ambassador, said: “I had no idea what I wanted to do so when I went to PEGL I spent some time in all the different departments. I spent quite a lot of time on the production side, learning about all the equipment. I also spent a day seeing how they tested cryogenic liquids. I really liked that but it was a bit loud. Although I enjoyed learning about the different aspects of the business, I really liked finance the best. “I am now hoping to study geology, maths, physics and chemistry at A Level and then go on to university. Being an Ambassador really helped with my confidence and my communication skills. I am also more willing to study subjects I find difficult. I am now much more determined to do well. I am not sure yet what sort of career I would like but this experience has widened my horizons. I now realise I have a number of options.” Claire Jackson, Assistant Head at Stocksbridge HighSchool, said: “We have been involved in this programme for four years, engaging about 12 students a year in the engineering sector. They get a great depth of opportunity, working in teams and as individuals. It has helped to strengthen their understanding of what’s available to them and improved their employability skills. But the key area of benefit is confidence which extends to their school work.” Mbachi Kambele of Firth Park Academy did her work experience with the manufacturing company Chimo Holdings. She was mentored by Chris Hudson, a long-standing Freeman of the Cutlers’ Company, chair of governors at Park Academy and trustee of work-
wise. He said: “I think this is an excellent programme which has the advantage of being employer led but because the youngsters are 14-16 years old there are a lot of health and safety issues and there are a number of things we just can’t allow them to do. Whilst ensuring that they remain in a safe environment, I would like to see a relaxation in some of the restrictions. “I would also like to see a broader spectrum of youngsters on the scheme. In particular we need young people who may have an aptitude for engineering, who can then be nurtured and encouraged by us. “Everyone leaves us with an understanding of how business works and the opportunities that are available to them. Mbachi was a star pupil. She is an academic high-flyer who was able to take away an understanding of manufacturing which will stand her in good stead for her future career”. Mbachi was a pupil at Firth Park Academy where principal Dean Jones is a great advocate of the scheme. “All our students have benefited from the scheme. Mbachi Kambele Academically their improvements have been quantifiable. For example, 100 per cent of last year’s cohort of NHS Ambassadors achieved three levels of progress [added value] in their English as compared to 70 per cent by those who did not participate” he said. “We currently have 14 students in the NHS and 14 in the engineering sector. We are also the school which is pioneering the Cultural Ambassadors programme which incorporates theatre, arts, sports and community. “We select our students through an interview process and adopt a policy of positive discrimination towards disadvantaged students who have the most to gain. Around 65 per cent of Firth Park students would be classed as disadvantaged but we try to nurture the aspirations of all those who put themselves forward for the programme.”

can often be done in the workplace. At a time when skills shortages are significantly hampering the economy, apprenticeships offer business owners the opportunity to address a lack of skills in their business, attract people with fresh new ideas and train people to specific job roles, making them suit the exact needs of their company.
Added to this is the fact that up to 100 per cent funding can be available to businesses to support their apprenticeship programmes. A large number of companies across the Sheffield City Region are already reaping the benefits of apprenticeships and helping to ensure the workforce of the future has the skills our economy needs.

EMPLOYER: MELANIE OLDHAM, MANAGING DIRECTOR OF BOB’S BUSINESS IN BARNSLEY “Young people have a fantastic grasp of IT and lots of innovative ideas,” says Managing Director, Melanie Oldham. As the founder of an online learning business, Melanie knows what she’s talking about. Bob’s Business helps organisations to guard against online security threats by training staff in how to keep safe online. The subject is serious but the online training courses that Bob’s Business produce are light-hearted and humorous so that staff enjoy them and remember their learning. In fact the business is named after the main animated character, Bob, who features in all the courses. Set up ten years ago, the company now has clients all over the UK and even as far afield as New Zealand, including local authorities, small businesses, and charitable organisations. In 2011, Bob’s Business moved into Barnsley’s flagship Digital Media Centre and since then has doubled in size.
Affording and finding talented staff to join the business is now a major issue to support expansion. Melanie turned to First for Apprenticeships Barnsley, which helps small and mediumsized businesses to take on apprentices. As a result, the company has taken on two apprentices and a third is in the pipeline. Melanie comments: “We are still relatively young as a business and affording new staff can be problematic when you’re trying to grow. Going down the apprenticeship route has given us talented young staff with potential at an affordable rate. The First for Apprenticeships Barnsley team made it
EMPLOYER: MICHELLE BAILEY, MANAGING DIRECTOR AT ACTIVE RESPONSE A former apprentice herself, managing director Michelle Bailey knows what she’s talking about when she says: “I cannot recommend the apprenticeship scheme highly enough.” Michelle can remember when she first started her training: “I was frightened to pick up the phone, but I quickly learnt and I loved it. It allowed me to be in the environment of grown-ups and developed me as a person. Now I’m running my own business. “For me it’s a long-term investment. I wouldn’t take on an apprentice if there was not a long term career opportunity at the end of it.” Not long after setting up Active Response Security, Michelle took on an apprentice to work in business administration. Hannah Taylor went on to
become a full-time employee and winning ITS Young Apprentice of the Year. Now Hannah is the full-time Operations Support Administrator for Active Response – a role that Michelle describes as “the engine of the business”, and the company has turned to the Apprenticeship scheme to develop further areas of the business to support the next phase of growth. Rachael Hanley joined the company in March 2014 and has already made an impression. “If you recruit the right young person, you can nurture them into your way of doing things,” said Michelle. “An apprentice learns about how your business works in particular. That’s the difference between an apprentice and someone who comes off a college or university course.”
easy by sourcing and filtering all the candidates.” Apprentices 21-year-old Curtis Naylor and 19-year-old Dale Parrish are both contributing to developing new online training courses and also dealing with customers. “I’ve been impressed with how quickly the apprentices have picked everything up and adapted to our business,” said Melanie. “We already have a third apprentice coming on and it’s a model we will look to for future growth.”

Case Studies Clifford Williams, XPO Logistics Clifford Williams, 42, is working towards a Level 2 Warehousing and Storage Apprenticeship with XPO Logistics and Barnsley College. Already employed at the ASOS site in Grimethorpe, Clifford felt he needed more of a challenge. One of the team leaders suggested that an apprenticeship would suit Clifford ‘down to the ground’. “I must admit I was a bit sceptical about doing it but with this apprenticeship I am earning a decent wage while learning valuable skills on the job. XPO Logistics is committed to apprentices and sees them as the future of the business. “So far the apprenticeship has been very informative and I’ve found the theoretical side of it really interesting. With an apprenticeship you get a whole different perspective of how a business works. You get to look at things from the angle of the team leader, from the admin department and from many other points of view – it is a real mind opener.”
Curtis Naylor, Bob’s Business Faced with the option of a student loan, 21-year-old Curtis Naylor decided against going to university and is now an apprentice in successful elearning company, Bob’s Business. “I did an Animal Management diploma at Barnsley College and the logical next step was university but the fees put me off,” said Curtis. “I did some call centre work as a stop-gap to earn a living but I wanted to progress. Now I’m doing a Level 3 Apprenticeship in Business Administration with Dearne Valley College and I’m training as an eLearning Project Officer at Bob’s Business. “An apprenticeship is a good starting point for a career. You have to learn the basics first in order to progress. Eventually I’d like to become an operations manager.”
Dale Parrish, Bob’s Business Dale Parrish, aged 19, works at Bob’s Business and is studying towards his Level 3 Apprenticeship in IT, Software, Web and Telecoms at Dearne Valley College. “I like the fact that I am gaining vital experience whilst I’m earning a wage,” said Dale, who started his apprenticeship in March 2014. “I feel a lot more confident already. I think that comes from talking to customers. I didn’t expect to have as much customer contact as I’ve had but that’s been good. It’s been a lot busier all round than I was expecting, so I’ve already been able to learn a lot.” Dale is responsible for helping to develop new online training modules, handling customer enquiries and generating tailored reports from the system for customers. He has his eye on a career in IT and already had an IT qualification under his belt when he started at Bob’s Business. He would like to become an IT Technician handling front-line support and is now taking a further qualification in IT Support as part of his apprenticeship.

HOSPITALITY
AUGUST 2015

Pitch side hospitality suites and boxes have been transformed to provide a stylish setting for match day hospitality and events
WELCOME TO BRAMALL LANE THERE’S SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE AT THE HOME OF SHEFFIELD UNITED FC. his year Bramall Lane celebrates 160 years of being a sporting stadium. A historical facility that has hosted sports such as cricket, lacrosse, hockey, rugby, lawn tennis, cycling and, of course, it has been the home to Sheffield United F.C. since their formation in 1889, Bramall Lane is one of only two stadiums to have staged both the FA Cup Final and Ashes Test Cricket… truly a venue of legends.
T
Bramall Lane is famed throughout football for the warm welcome given to its corporate clients and their guests. The modern day Bramall Lane is a fantastic multi-purpose venue. The range of facilities encompasses five quality suites ranging from the small and intimate to large and luxurious, and 30 wellequipped private boxes.
An investment of over £500,000 was made in 2014 by Levy Restaurants UK to the John Street Stand facilities at Bramall Lane which has seen the pitch side hospitality suites and boxes transformed to provide a stylish setting for match day hospitality and events. Sheffield United Head of Commercial, Paul Reeves, said: “The match day experience at Sheffield United is unique; every time you are here with us you play your part in making history. We are working with our corporate customers to make match day that little bit more special with our excellent hospitality packages. “The Platinum Suite is synonymous with quality and the TC10 Restaurant takes its name from Tony Currie, club ambassador,
and greatest ever player. “TC” dines there every match day and our Platinum Suite also welcomes a host of former playing greats. “There are a variety of hospitality packages, each one tailored perfectly to your needs, it could be a table for two in our restaurant for a birthday celebration or special anniversary, to a larger party entertaining corporate guests or as one of our match sponsors. At Bramall Lane there really is something for everybody.”

OVER TO YOU... A COUPLE OF YEARS AGO OFSTED PUBLISHED A HARD-HITTING REPORT WHICH REVEALED THAT CAREERS GUIDANCE IN SCHOOLS WAS FAILING. WOSSKOW BROWN’S CORPORATE HR, EMPLOYMENT & BUSINESS GROWTH ADVISOR JIM LAWSON ASSESSES THE IMPACT OF THIS FAILURE AND APPEALS TO THE PRIVATE SECTOR TO PICK UP THE BATON.
ntil 2012 student career guidance was provided by the governmentfunded agency Connexions. When this was disbanded it became the responsibility of schools to provide careers advice, yet they were given no extra funding to pay for it.
U
When the education regulator OFSTED visited schools in 2013, it found that three-quarters of schools were not providing effective impartial careers guidance. This is a real tragedy; more so when you consider that between February and April 2015, 740,000 young people aged 16-24 were unemployed. This unemployment costs the UK economy billions of pounds every year. In the same year, the annual report from The Prince’s Trust revealed it had interviewed 3,000 of the young people unemployed in this country and the picture was bleak. It found young people Jim Lawson
who had no self-esteem, low confidence and some who had turned to crime. Some said they had nothing to live for. This was pretty hard-hitting and brought out the emotional side to the facts and figures. So, careers advice is failing and we have got three-quarters of a million young people unemployed. How can industry make a difference? I view this picture as having two conveyor belts – one called education which you get on at the age of four and get off at 16 or 21; the other called industry. At the moment we have this horrible drop effect in between. People fall off the first belt and then scramble around trying to get on the second. What we need is a seamless approach between the two. We almost want a young person to be in education and then look round one day and say ‘oh, I’m in industry now – how did that happen?’
A SEAMLESS APPROACH We must strive to reach a point where the two conveyor belts are touching. We need employers and education to be absolutely intrinsically engaged and woven into one another.
20
Don’t get me wrong, there is some great stuff happening out there but we haven’t yet got to the point where those conveyor belts are touching. For me it is about asking employers: • “Are you doing enough to engage with the employees of tomorrow?” • “Do you talk about your business to young people?” • “Do you or your managers go into educational establishments and talk to young people about the jobs that exist within your company?” • “Do your staff go into schools and colleges and talk to young people about what their job entails?”.
A FLAVOUR OF WORK Industry needs to give young people a taste for it by giving up their time to go into education and talking about a real ‘day in the life’. Industry then needs to invite these young people into the business environment to see for themselves. Young people need real work experience and they need more of it; one week is not enough. Some schools have stopped doing work experience altogether because it is no longer paid for by the government. This

CAREERS
is making the situation even worse and is driving a further wedge between education and industry. The OFSTED report revealed we had teachers giving careers advice to young people in their lunch breaks or during assemblies. However you look at it this is not a good model for careers advice; careers are much too important for this. I imagine there are two main challenges for schools. One is that teachers only have so many hours to teach a subject so taking young people out for a week can cause problems for the teacher. The other is the practical side of organising work experience, such as transportation and safeguarding. Yes, these are barriers, but we must find a way to overcome them and technology may enable us to do this.
THINKING OUTSIDE THE BOX Perhaps it is time to seek new and innovative ways of giving careers advice to young people. It could be that, during a lesson in the classroom around careers or personal and social education, we have the MD of a company speaking to students via video conference. If it’s impossible to get young people and industry together physically then let’s do it virtually. Do a virtual factory tour led by the MD and let him introduce the engineering manager and the HR manager who can speak about what they do. We could also have a reversal of this process and invite young people to record a presentation for industry highlighting what they want to know. Let young people ask the MD questions such as: • “What do you require from me?” • “How should I approach you?”
• “What skills and qualifications do I need to get into your industry?”
called for the private sector to pick up the baton and make that happen.
• “What should I say when I contact you?”.
Achieving a more seamless approach will not only benefit young people but will benefit industry too.
Employers don’t always know how to speak to young people and young people do not know how to talk to employers. We need some out of the box thinking to overcome this.
INDUSTRY, IT’S OVER TO YOU... The National Careers Service we have now for Year 8 and upwards is provided online and invites young people to phone up for careers advice. I know my 13-year-old wouldn’t pick up the phone to ask for advice on careers. We have slick systems in place but are they working? Yes, there is some great stuff happening in schools and some great stuff happening in careers but there is still a transitional period between education and industry that no-one seems to own. There is a big void in the middle which needs filling and the government has
Medium to large businesses are generally OK at recruiting as they have HR departments but the challenge is for smaller companies. They don’t know where to look and often a small business owner will need to recruit quickly once they have identified a need. Young people say they can’t find a job, small businesses say they can’t find the right people; there’s a void that needs filling. This is not to ignore the great work that people are already doing out there. There are a number of industries doing some incredible things but I come back to the fact that we don’t have a seamless approach. If we did then why do we have a situation where OFSTED are saying careers advice is failing and almost a million 18-24 year-olds are out of work? Despite some good efforts we are not there yet; but if industry and education work together to close the gap then one day we just might be.

DREAM TEAM
AUGUST 2015

IT’S GOOD TO TALK
Kevin Kerley
Rob Moore
GETTING TO GRIPS WITH APPRAISALS? THE DREAM TEAM LOOK AT POSITIVE WAYS TO DISCUSS STAFF DEVELOPMENT. DEAR DREAM TEAM: My business is introducing annual work appraisals and I suspect some staff won’t see the point or will even resent being questioned, especially those in senior positions. How can I get them to benefit from appraisals, to better themselves and improve productivity?
KEVIN KERLEY CHAIRMAN OF THE ACADEMY FOR CHIEF EXECUTIVES, SOUTH & WEST YORKSHIRE The concept of appraisals has changed for the better over the last ten years. No longer are they used by the line manager as an opportunity to wield a big stick on the employee. For me the appraisal process should be an opportunity to appreciate and motivate the employee. If the employee leaves the appraisal no more motivated than when they arrived, the appraiser has failed in their objective. The appraisal form should be sent out a month in advance for the employee to fill out and return to you within two weeks, complete with the time and location for the meeting. The employee often sees the meeting as their only opportunity in the year for a 1:1 with their line manager, this can often cause them to be anxious about the process. For this reason I have always preferred to arrange the meeting off site in a relaxed and casual environment. Adopt the ‘praise sandwich’ approach, start with positives... ‘You’re a great team member’, address the area for
22
improvement that will make an impact on their performance by agreeing smart goals around this objective. Then finish on highlighting their excellence ‘ I think you will offer a lot to the business over the next 12 months and I’m very excited to be working with you.’ Don’t be tempted to address many areas for improvement, these should be addressed ongoing in your day to day management. Better to focus on the one area that will make a real difference, and set this as their objective for focused improvement throughout the year. The cardinal sins for me around appraisals are cancelling the meeting at short notice (this may make the employee feel they are not important), discussing pay rates/increases, this is too emotive and can be de-motivating. A pay review meeting should be arranged a month or so after the appraisal and the award can be linked to their overall performance and discussions at the appraisal. I would also seriously recommend appraisal training for the managers who are going to carry out the appraisals so they fully understand the principles and process, prior to starting them.
ROB MOORE RECOVERY EXPERT AND PARTNER AT TAYLOR & EMMETT If you haven’t done appraisals before there is bound to be scepticism amongst some of your staff as to your motives. However, it is hard to argue with the benefits of appraisals. Once you have conducted your work appraisals, I am sure your staff will realise that the
appraisals help to reduce uncertainty about what is expected of them by you as their employer, as well as presenting opportunities for training and development. Both you and each employee can identify and target possible areas of underperformance where improvement is required and you can establish and agree goals with your staff that could lead to career advancement and promotions. You can use the appraisal process to chart the progress of your employees. Comparing objectives from one benchmark period to another will provide both you and each of your employees with measurable evidence of either improvement, lack of improvement or even regression in their job. This data will be invaluable for both you and each employee when you come to negotiate salaries and will aid your decision making concerning demotions, promotions and terminations. You can use the appraisal process as a means of motivating your staff, thereby improving their productivity and profitability. These one to one periodic meetings can form or strengthen relationships between you and your staff. You could offer bonuses or other inducements to your staff if they are able to improve their performance from one appraisal to the next. CHALLENGE OUR TEAM. The team will respond to one selected question in each edition of First For Business. Send your questions to ffb@regionalmagazine.co.uk. Name withheld on request

CELEBRATING TEN YEARS AT THE QUADRANT SHEFFIELD’S PREMIER BUSINESS CENTRE IS CELEBRATING ITS TENTH ANNIVERSARY. ompleted in June 2005 as part of an £11.6million business development, The Quadrant has since been home to almost 150 businesses.
C
The Quadrant gives customers the best of all worlds – a stunning award-winning building with excellent facilities and the bonus that they are supporting the community around them. As a social enterprise owned by Manor and Castle Development Trust, The Quadrant channels its profits into local projects to create jobs, provide training and offer new life changing opportunities to people in some of the most deprived areas of Sheffield. Every penny made helps build new lives. The Quadrant is located within the M1 corridor, just off the Sheffield Parkway, which is the main route from Sheffield city centre to the motorway networks via M1 Junction 33. It is thus located in a strategically important position in a fast developing economic area and offers easy access to the city centre. The offices, which range in size from 265 sq ft to 3,373 sq ft, are equipped to a very high standard. They have raised access floors, suspended ceilings, high quality lighting, mechanical air ventilation and are fully cabled for voice and data. Local company Ask4 provides voice and data connectivity to individual offices. A shared office facility and virtual tenant services are also offered. The Quadrant has its own high quality café open from 7.30am to 3pm and tenant and visitor needs are met through a fully staffed reception with photocopying, franking, postal and

secretarial services and telephone answering. The unique ‘indoor street’ and glazed atrium, which runs down the spine of the building connects the suites. This provides a comfortable area in which to hold informal business meetings, network, relax or surf the internet on The Quadrant’s free wireless network. For more formal meetings, The Quadrant offers a spectacular round glass-walled conference room which can hold up to 50 people theatre style, 30 classroom or 24 boardroom style. There are also two purpose-built, glass walled meeting rooms. These are serviced with refreshments and food by The Cafe. The building was developed to the highest specifications using high quality material. Not only is it aesthetically pleasing but it is also environmentally friendly, featuring high levels of insulation, high air tightness, solar shading to minimise heat gain and photo voltaic solar panels on the roof. The Quadrant has 220 car parking spaces so tenants can have as many permits as they need. There are landscaped grounds, manned security and extensive CCTV coverage and tenants have access 24 hours a day 365 days a year.
To celebrate this milestone The Quadrant has collaborated with First for Business to produce this special tenth anniversary feature with the support of tenants and partners including: CVC Event Services, DP Electrical Services, Line One Sales, Power People and Intelligent Resourcing.

ANNIVERSARY
FACTS
BACKGROUND
• Home to 148 businesses in the past ten years • Host to 7,260 meetings and events in the conference and meeting rooms over the past ten years
LONGEST STANDING TENANTS • JW Wines (Dec 2005) • Kaplan (2006) • National Open College Network (2006) • Great Places Housing (2007) • ACIS Housing (2007) • Line One Sales (2009) • Roslyns Accounting (2009)
The Quadrant is a social enterprise owned by Manor and Castle Development Trust – a community based charity that was established in 1997 to work with local people to regenerate the neighbourhoods in the Manor and Castle ward. It was the pioneering spirit of the Trust plus its capacity for innovation and creativity that led to the birth of what is now known as The Quadrant. The project satisfied three key aims: • To begin the process of regenerating the former Parkway Wholesale Markets site and act as a catalyst for the development of Parkway Business Park. • To provide SMEs with much needed high quality managed workspace within which growth would be encouraged and supported. • To provide MCDT with an asset that would provide a long term income stream.
LAUREN WHITE, CENTRE MANAGER “Customer delight is at the heart of everything we do at The Quadrant. We aim to offer our tenants much more than just office space. We foster a vibrant, exciting business community and with the average person spending 40 hours a week in the office, we aim to make The Quadrant feel like their second home. Our tenants are made to feel special and that is because they are special and each member of ‘The Quad Squad’ is committed to providing an exceptional experience. We genuinely care about each business and each individual – and it shows.”
PHIL ASHTON, LINE ONE SALES “Congratulations on achieving a whole decade! It has been a pleasure to have been involved with the Quadrant for over half of that time. We at Line One Sales wish you all the very best for the future and hope that the next ten years prove to be as successful as the first.”
SCOTT RUTHERFORD, VOHKUS “We would like to wish you all a happy birthday and a big thank you.
Everyone is mentioning the ‘building’ however it’s irrelevant without good people. You make sharing this office space a great experience because you share our humour and friendly approach.”
JILL WHITE, ANDY HANSELMAN CONSULTING “As tenants of The Quadrant for more than four years my only disappointment is... Why didn’t we move here years ago? From walking through the door to leaving at 9pm (yes 9!) at night nothing is too much trouble. From Friday sweets, Christmas markets, tenant networking, furniture loaning, logistics removing and charity giving, The Quadrant really is first class!”
GREG DARWIN, HELPSYSTEMS “You were head and shoulders above everyone else when it came to looking for new office space, in terms of the presentation of the building and available space, responding to questions quickly and coming across as really friendly and welcoming. The process of moving in went very smoothly and we’ve felt really welcome since we’ve been here.”

TURNING OVER A NEW LEAF Alfa Romeo has unveiled a serious contender to the BMW 3-Series, Audi A4 and Mercedes-Benz C-Class – and boy does it look good. The Giulia, the long-awaited successor to the 159, is dripping with Italian style and elegance but has lots more to make you sit up and take note. For a start, it’s rear-wheel drive (all-wheel drive will also be available) with perfect 50/50 weight distribution; a strong indication that it will drive as good as it looks. This is aided by the use of carbon fibre, aluminium and plastic, giving the car an extraordinary weight-to-power ratio. The Giulia will launch in 2016 with the flagship Quadrifoglio version, a 510hp behemoth which utilises a state-of-the-art six cylinder turbo petrol engine with Ferrari-inspired technologies. The queue starts here.

A NEW CLASS OF MINI
DYNAMIC CLASS
Although larger than its predecessor, the biggest changes to the new MINI Clubman have been made under the bonnet with the introduction of new TwinPower Turbo Technology engines.
Mercedes-Benz’s change of direction for it’s A-Class proved to be a gamble worth taking – and now they’ve unveiled a new version of the sporty hatchback.
Three units will be available from launch, the MINI Cooper Clubman, the MINI Cooper D Clubman and the MINI Cooper S Clubman, with prices starting from £19,995. A choice of two petrol engines with three or four cylinders will be offered alongside a four-cylinder diesel. Six-speed manual transmissions will be offered as standard although a new eight-speed Steptronic transmission will be available as an option on the MINI Cooper D and MINI Cooper S Clubman. All cars will come with MINI’s highly acclaimed Navigation System as standard.
Lookswise you’ll be hard pushed to notice any difference; it’s inside where the changes have been made. The biggest improvement is perhaps the introduction of DYNAMIC SELECT, which allows the driver to change the car’s characteristics at the touch of a button. The engine, transmission, suspension, steering and air conditioning are all tuned to fit with one of the selected driving modes – Comfort, Sport, Eco and Individual. There’ll be four petrol engines and four diesel engines, the latter of which includes a new 109hp A180 d with CO2 emissions of just 89g/km.
BRAND ICON The Mazda MX-5 has long been considered one of the best – if not the best – valuefor-money roadsters on the market. And now it just got even better. The all-new model, characterised by rear-wheel drive, perfect 50/50 weight distribution and more comfort and technology than ever before, was launched at the recent Goodwood Festival of Speed. It’s shorter, lower and wider than its predecessor as well as lighter. Two SKY ACTIV-G petrol engines – a 1.5-litre 131ps and 2.0-litre 160ps – will be available along with five trim levels. All models feature LED headlights, alloy wheels and a six-speed manual gearbox. Jeremy Thomson, Mazda Motors UK managing director, said: “The MX-5 is Mazda’s brand icon and it embodies all that is great about our products. Its fun to drive character has strengthened the bond between Mazda and its customers for 25 years.” The new MX-5 will continue to offer value for money, with prices ranging from £18,495 to £23,295.
