LET THE CURRY LIFE AWARDS BEST CHEF 2017 COOK YOU UP A TREAT AT THE VINE, MOSBOROUGH. he Vine may be Mosborough’s only Indian restaurant, but as the winners of Best Chef 2017 at the coveted Curry Life Awards, why would the village need anywhere else to dine? Chef Muktar Ali collected his award in front of an audience of more than 600 people at a gala event in London’s Royal Lancaster Hotel, hosted by journalist and broadcaster, Michael Buerk. Better known to his customers as Ali, The Vine chef won the award after wowing judges with his delicious dishes – one of which he had discovered on a recent trip to Bangladesh. Though Ali has opened and worked in various restaurants and takeaways all over Sheffield over the past 30 years, he’s never been one to show off his talents until now. “We had to convince him to enter, but I’m so glad he did,� says his son and restaurant manager, Iqbal Hussain. “We’re all delighted for Muktar Ali. He is an amazing chef and whatever he touches tastes great. Ever since we opened this place, we’ve been going from strength to strength thanks to his efforts in the kitchen. “Customers often come in and ask him to rustle up something special that isn’t on the menu and he is comfortable doing that at the drop of a hat because he loves experimentation.�

This year, the awards ceremony recognised the 13 best curry restaurants and 19 best curry chefs in the UK, the best curry restaurant in Europe, as well as awarding a Lifetime Achievement Award and an International Honour Award to a chef from India. Treat your tastebuds THE VINE’S AWARD-WINNING CHEF HAD PLENTY OF ADVICE FOR CREATURE OF HABIT, PHOEBE SEYMOUR. rits are notorious for being creatures of habit, not least in Indian restaurants. Once we find a curry we love, we tend to order it time and time again. Chicken tikka masala is often dubbed Britain’s favourite curry – and I must admit, it’s mine too. But seeing the long list of exciting house specials, chef ’s specialities and Vine specials at The Vine Indian Cuisine in Mosborough, it seemed a shame to stick with the same old traditional dish. Chef Muktar Ali loves experimenting with flavours and he will often go ‘off menu’ to create something special for his customers. He recently returned from an inspirational trip to Bangladesh and is looking forward to introducing even more interesting dishes to his menu. One such dish wowed a panel of judges, when Ali was named Best Chef 2017 at the Curry Life Awards in London last month. Needless to say, this 100-seater restaurant is packed to the rafters every weekend. I’d last visited The Vine a year ago, and since then, the décor has changed. The once rich red walls are now cream, making the room appear bigger and brighter. The bar area is newly tiled too, giving it a more modern

and on-trend look. Another small, but important detail is the free car park, ensuring pesky parking meters don’t cut your meal short. Home to an extensive wine list, I began with a medium glass of pinot grigio (£2.80) and my sister had a classic curry companion, a half of Cobra (£2.20), as we munched on poppadoms and a fresh pickle tray. For starters, I had the fish tikka (£4.50), which came still sizzling in the pan and mixed with aromatic fried onions, while my sister had the mixed kebab (£3.90) made up of a crisp bhaji, alu chop and sheik kebab. For my main course, manager Iqbal Hussain recommended the handi (£8.50) – a Vine favourite. And although this usually only comes with chicken or lamb, he was happy to accommodate me by swapping them for vegetables. With full cloves of garlic and big bay leaves enhancing the flavours, my handi had very distinct ginger and garlic notes. Meanwhile, my sister chose the chicken karai (£5.90) – her own personal favourite. These were accompanied by pilau rice (£2.80), garlic nan (£2.80) and ghobi bhaji (£3.50), spiced cauliflowers, which were also mixed with
buttery potatoes to create yet another bespoke dish. Ok, so we over ordered, but the leftovers were bagged up and made for a delicious tea the next day. We finished the meal off with two coffees (£2) with delicate little chocolates on the side. So the next time you are tempted to order your usual curry, be bold. Put your tastebuds in the capable hands of Ali and his team – you’ll be glad you did. Most people talk about my fight with Crawford Ashley for the British Commonwealth and European title. No-one really expected me to win, and in the first round I got my nose bust pretty bad, but, I went on to win. I think it was the most satisfying fight I’ve had.
Who were your boxing heroes growing up?
Which of your titles would you consider to be your biggest achievement?
I used to like to watch Sugar Ray Leonard, Marvin Hagler and Tommy Hearns – they were part of the golden era of boxing. What are some highlights of your career?
For me, when I finally won the World title against Rico Hoye, which was my fourth attempt. I was scared to death about fighting him to tell you the truth, as no-one wanted

to go up against him. I felt such relief when I won. If you were to get back into the ring one more time, who would you go up against?
Glen Johnson because we had three fights. The first was a draw, the second for the World title he won and the third I was World Champion and won. I think we are getting on now though, and I doubt my wife would let me, but I would be ready for one more scrap! If it wasn’t for boxing where do you think you would be now?
I think I might have got in trouble for daft stuff, but I’ve always been a hard worker so I would like to think that I would be in a similar position to what I am now. I would still own a house and be a family man. Do you think taking up boxing is a positive thing for the younger generations?
It is definitely a positive thing. Boxing is a great form of exercise and I have got so many kids who come down to my classes who have been getting into trouble, and it just helps them channel all that energy somewhere else. What advice would you give to aspiring boxers?
It is really important to get an education first, so then you always have a backup. The percentage of boxers that make the big bucks is small, so an education is key. For those going into their first fight I would tell them to let everything go. Don’t finish the fight thinking that you could do another round – just go for it. What inspired you to open your own boxing fitness gym?
When I first retired I didn’t know what to do,

and I saw this old youth club up for sale – it was the one I used to go to when I was little. So, I went in, bought the place and put in a load of hard work to do it up before turning it into a boxing fitness gym. When I teach boxing fitness I use similar skills to how I box but without the technique. We start with a warm up, then pop gloves on and I shout instructions for them to do on the bag. We do pad work and circuits – it’s a great session where everyone leaves knowing they’ve had a good workout. What’s the inspiration behind your new book, ‘Into the Woods’?
My boxing story isn’t the normal one, where a guy winning amateur titles goes straight to professional. It’s different, I went into boxing not because I loved the sport but because I was good at it. I went in not expecting to win anything, but obviously ended up winning everything you can, and ended up fighting some of the biggest names in boxing history such as Roy Jones. The book also focuses on my first trainer, who I loved. He was one of the toughest men in Sheffield but was tragically stabbed to death and his section of the book is really moving. ‘Into the Woods’ isn’t just a boxing book, it provides true insights into the motivations of a fighting man. I’d just like to say thanks to my wife, Natalia, as without her I wouldn’t have been able to do any of this. She is very strong and supportive and the reason I have done so well in my career.

SHEFFIELD TEACHERS’ CHOIR Bird superstars raise vital funds for charities The Tropical Butterfly House, Wildlife and Falconry Centre’s fantastic bird team have trained the resident birds to free fly simultaneously, making the displays an impressive sight. An impressive £2,370 has been raised for the World Parrot Trust, £2,213 has gone to the Hawk Conservancy Trust’s International Vulture Programme, £1,562 has been raised for the SWCC Hedgehog Hospital, £1,000 has been sent to the Gharial Conservation Alliance and £500 has been raised for local wildlife charities; £250 to the SK58 Birders Group and £250 to Sheffield & Rotherham Wildlife Trust.
The Sheffield Teachers’ Choir will be celebrating Christmas with two performances during December. On 2 December they will be singing traditional Christmas carols between noon and 1pm at Kelham Island’s Victorian Christmas Market. The choir will also be appearing in The Winter Garden on 16 December between 11am and 1pm to sing everyone’s favourite Christmas carols once again. Sheffield Teachers Choir is always on the look-out for new members... and you don’t have to be a teacher to join. There are vacancies in all parts, especially for altos, tenors and basses.
