PROMOTIONWOSSKOW BROWN

Wosskow Brown’s head of private client, Emilda Morgans, highlights the importance of making a will and creating a Lasting Power of Attorney.

M

any people don’t understand the implications of dying without a will, but each year the Treasury gains millions of pounds from estates that cannot be transferred to anyone else. Where there is no will, the intestacy rules determine how the estate is distributed. This often means that the estate is not distributed in the way that the deceased would have chosen. Co-habiting couples are particularly vulnerable as, if you die without having made a Will, your partner may not inherit from your estate. Instead, it will pass to your surviving family and your partner may have to make a claim against the estate. The best way to avoid this happening is by making a Will now. In a short appointment, you can secure the future for your loved ones. Finally, always take professional advice. Making a homemade will may save money but mistakes will only be spotted when it is too late. It may end up costing more money – and cause a lot more stress.

Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) As you get older, you may start to consider who would look after your financial affairs and your health and welfare should you no longer be able to. By appointing an attorney through a LPA, you and your loved ones can have the peace of mind that you and your assets will be looked after by someone that you know and trust. Should you become incapable of making important decisions, and you do not have an LPA, an application to the Court of Protection may be the only option. This can take six months or more to approve and cost at least three times more than a LPA. Once registered, the LPA can allow your attorneys to access your funds and to sell your property. They can then use your money to continue to pay all of your outgoings, such as nursing home fees. This can reduce stress at an already emotional time. Your loved ones will be unable to make the rights decisions for you unless the correct legal documentation is in place. So make sure that this is done now to avoid unnecessary delays and complications in the future. PROMOTIONWARD’S NURSERIES AND GARDEN CENTRE

Spring is well and truly under way and it’s time to get down to work in the garden.

S

ummer. We dream and talk about it all year round until it finally arrives. But in the gardening world it is time to stop wishing and start preparing – and where better to do so than at Ward’s Nurseries and Garden Centre? Ward’s is one of the largest and best-stocked centres in the area and has everything you need to bring your garden back to life after a long winter. “We have all sorts of products to make your garden colourful for the summer,” says Sue Poulton, director of Ward’s. “You can spend as little or as much as you want. Just adding a hanging basket can make a real difference.” Those with green fingers should be planting vegetables such as courgettes, cucumbers and tomatoes as well as fruit trees. So come summer, you can sit back and quite literally enjoy the fruits of your labour. Bedding plants are a great way of injecting a burst of colour to borders during the warmer months. Wards stock a variety of seeds, plants, pots and hanging baskets to suit every display, as well as everything you need to give your plants the best possible start and to keep them blooming throughout the summer. There is also a new range of soft fruit – blackcurrants, blackberries, redcurrants, strawberries, blueberries and raspberries The range includes specially selected dessert varieties to make particularly delicious jam. Once your garden has begun to take shape, why not purchase a BBQ to make the most of it? What better way to kick-start the summer in true British style than with some sizzling burgers and sausages on a brand new barbie? Ward’s has a fabulous selection to choose from so pop in and take a look. Wards Nurseries and Garden Centre Eckington Road, Coal Aston, Dronfield, S18 3BA Tel: 01246 412622 www.wardsgardencentre.co.uk

A FEW THI NGS TO DO NOW

Spruce up your garden pond

Clean up your patio Get rid of green mould, moss and algae easily from hard surfaces such as patios and driveways with Patio Magic. No scrubbing or jet washing necessary, simply dilute, apply and leave to dry. Then come along and treat yourself to some stylish new patio furniture from our new season's range, sit back and enjoy.

Coldwater fish can now be added to your pond. Ward’s have more species arriving regularly including many indigenous species such as English river minnows, stone loaches and the nostalgia inducing sticklebacks - the little fish we all used to catch in our nets as kids.

Make the most of your space Ward's now stock a fantastic new range of seeds specifically developed for growing in small spaces. Even if you only have a windowsill the garden centre has something for your space. Italian mix leaf salad can be sown and harvested all within three weeks and imagine the convenience – not to mention the satisfaction – of windowsill-to-plate, all grown by you. Baby carrots and beetroot can easily be grown in a window box and for your newly cleaned patio Ward’s have dwarf French beans (ready in seven weeks), baby leek and lettuce, which can all be planted in containers or vegetable growing bags. These are just a small sample of the many varieties on offer and if you need a little help choosing just ask a member of the knowledgeable staff.

PROMOTIONREDBRIK

Redbrik has a new home in Crystal Peaks – find out why they continue to break new ground in the property market.

A

s you are driving through the Crystal Peaks area you may have noticed a number of distinctive red, white and black sale boards. The company behind them is Redbrik, the region’s fast-growing estate agency. Redbrik have made quite an impact on the property sector since launching nearly two years in Chesterfield. Now with successful branches in Chesterfield and Millhouses, the team at Redbrik have opened their third branch located within Crystal Peaks Shopping Centre. The branch, situated in the Central Atrium at the shopping centre, is being overseen by leading Sheffield property expert Peter Lee. A recent addition to the Redbrik’s everexpanding team, Peter has brought his 21 years of experience in the property business to Redbrik. Formerly a director at Blundells, where he built his career, Peter has a wealth of understanding in the local area, wide-ranging property knowledge and desire for exceptional customer service – something which Redbrik pride themselves on. Peter said: “We are absolutely delighted to be opening a branch at Crystal Peaks and my team and I, including highly experienced branch manager David Cooper, are really looking forward to showing our

IMAGEmagazine 18

customers what makes Redbrik different and demonstrate our outstanding levels of customer service. “At Redbrik we are focussed on getting every client the best deal and just generally being nice people. We don’t work to targets, avoid jargon and aim to give the best possible advice tailored to each individual. Our knowledge, service and presentation get the results vendors deserve. “We don’t give inflated valuations just to get your home on our books. We advise you what is really happening in the market and what selling price you can honestly expect to achieve. We pride ourselves on our detailed knowledge of the local area and we use the most up-to-date data to give an accurate valuation to help you get the best price for your home. The positive news is that in most cases we are exceeding expectations. “First impressions count and we want every property on our books to look its absolute best. Our stunning detailed brochures, innovative floor plans that show where the highresolution photographs are taken from, coupled with expert staging advice, will highlight your home’s best features and attract buyers. “We only use professional photographers who understand the Redbrik philosophy of creating

beautiful lifestyle images to capture the character of your home. “Our bespoke marketing literature is backed up by a top class database software system, which allows us to utilise the information we hold to accurately match applicants to homes. “In addition, our website, www.redbrik.co.uk, provides a fully responsive platform to strikingly showcase properties alongside unique features, such as photo plans which aid and enhance the buying experience. “In the competitive market place agents need to differentiate in ways that benefit the customer. Delivering outstanding service is what our customers value most and therefore it is integral to everything we do. “All estate agents say they offer good service, however many don’t have their customer’s needs at heart. Our team do not work to any imposed targets, so they are able to go the extra mile and offer a responsive, flexible and friendly service. “Our team embodies the Redbrik style, professional, experienced yet friendly and relaxed. “However, when it comes to the crunch, every estate agent is judged on their performance and we are often asked by vendors if they will achieve the asking price for their property. “Our results simply speak for themselves. Through our skilled negotiation, superb marketing and beautiful presentation, we understand how to get vendors the best price. Over the last year we have achieved an average of 98.4 per cent of asking prices on our properties, with an average property taking just 91 days to exchange. In fact, over 70 per cent of our properties are sold within just four weeks. “We have already sold a number of properties in the Crystal Peaks area before

Redbrik Success Story: 35 Stoneacre Avenue When it came to choosing an estate agent to sell her property on Stoneacre Avenue, customer service was key for Joanne Crossland. She chose Redbrik. Joanne said: “Redbrik were fantastic from start to finish. My first impressions of the company were that they were down to earth and approachable and really cared about me as a customer and put me first every step of the way. “The team at Redbrik were always there for me offering advice and support, especially during the after sales process once an offer was accepted. This is something I had never experienced before so the guidance was great and really reassuring. I really liked the personal and attentive customer service I received. “The way Redbrik marketed my property was also brilliant. The photos that were taken of my house were stunning and I especially liked the detailed brochures which had a real lifestyle feel and included local information which is useful to prospective buyers.”

ove it or hate it, Marsala will be omnipresent this year, after being named Pantone’s ‘Colour of the Year’. Rich, decadent and full-bodied, Marsala makes for an elegant statement colour when used on its own or as a stylish accent. According to the brand’s colour experts, Marsala is a “naturally robust and earthy, wine red hue that tastefully embodies the satisfying richness of a fulfilling meal, while its grounding red-brown roots emanate a sophisticated, natural earthiness”. After the success of Pantone’s previous winners – Emerald in 2013 and last year’s Radiant Orchid – you can expect Marsala to be popping up everywhere in interior design and home furnishings this year.

PROMOTIONBARRY PRITCHARD FUNERAL SERVICES

You can be sure of integrity and respect from a caring family firm at a time when you need it most. lanning a funeral for a loved one is one of the hardest and emotionally draining experiences we will ever go through, so it’s reassuring to know that there are kind, knowledgeable people to help us through these difficult times. Although Barry Pritchard Funeral Services has been established for little over a year, Barry is no stranger to Swallownest. He grew up there and, as his grandfather Charles Pritchard and father Alan ‘Jim’ Pritchard were both funeral directors, it was no surprise that Barry went on to pursue a career in the same profession. He worked in the family business until it was sold and then subsequently spent some time working in London. Over many years, Barry gained a wealth of experience arranging and conducting funerals – from simple funerals to high-profile events with royalty in attendance at Westminster Abbey. He also became president of the London Association of Funeral Directors and still sits on their executive committee. Regardless of whom the service is for, Barry treats each and every funeral with the same dignity and respect. “It’s about giving the best you can possibly give. I’m there to make sure that the families we look after find the experience as easy as it can possibly be.” With his village roots still strong, Barry wanted to bring something back to Swallownest and when a property on Worksop Road, near to the medical centre became available, it provided the ideal opportunity. Barry Pritchard Funeral Services was established and now Barry, along with his wife, Yvonne, his sister Ann, who is a florist, and brother-in-law Grayson Radcliffe are once again offering their caring services in Swallownest and the surrounding villages. “We have a unique approach with traditional values and can provide the high standard and quality services that people deserve.” Everything about Barry Pritchard Funeral Services – down to the homely setting of the arrangement room – is designed with customers’ comfort in mind. There’s already a huge book filled with thank you messages from grateful customers. As well as providing a unique service, Barry Pritchard Funeral Services can help make a funeral as personalised as you wish.

P

“Coffins can be completely bespoke; it’s a marvellous way to celebrate aspects of someone’s life. A lady’s family recently put together a collage of photographs for the coffin design and it became a focal part of the funeral, where people could share in the memories of the photos.” Their full in-house service means everything can be organised in one place, saving you the worry of sourcing flowers, orders of service and headstones from elsewhere. From the outside, it can seem something of a mystery how those in the industry manage emotionally. Barry says: “I was born into this business and you learn to keep your composure, but you have to have some kind of emotion because otherwise you wouldn’t be sensitive towards clients. I’m employed to help families through a difficult time and keeping composed, regardless of the circumstances, is vital in meeting clients’ expectations.” Despite the melancholy nature of this kind of work, Barry says he loves hearing about the lives people have led and providing a service that celebrates this, while trying to bring comfort to their friends and relatives. “It’s a privilege to meet people and help them through such a difficult time in their lives. And it is really wonderful to be back in Swallownest and the surrounding villages again. It feels like things have come full circle to be here again and part of the local community.” Barry Pritchard Funeral Services are providers of Golden Charter and Perfect Choice funeral plans and serve Aston, Aughton, Swallownest and surrounding areas. great hotel is never just somewhere to rest your head. The best venues attract day visitors for their food and hospitality, which can rival that of even the most impressive restaurants. BEST WESTERN PLUS Aston Hall Hotel caters for corporate and leisure guests, day visitors and couples tying the knot. A grand building dating back to 1772, set in 55 acres of land, this independently-owned hotel is a stunning venue and is well worth a visit even if you’re not planning an overnight stay. We visited Aston Hall for dinner one evening and discovered that their dining experience is every bit as impressive as the historic building and beautiful grounds. The cosy Bamford Restaurant boasts both a bar menu, featuring salads, sandwiches, burgers and a splendid afternoon tea, and a main menu with a variety of grills, so you will be sure to find something that tickles your fancy. To start, I selected a salad that was bursting with flavour thanks to a tasty combination of olives, feta, sundried tomatoes and red onion. If you were visiting for lunch, this would make a lovely dish by itself. Meanwhile, my companion tucked into his starter of ratatouille risotto with deep fried mozzarella balls and dressed rocket. Its subtle flavours and cooked-to-perfection rice provided a pleasant start to the meal. The hotel’s menu boasts a variety of grills and my chargrilled chicken was accompanied by onion rings and thick chunky chips that were roasted to perfection. With three sauces to choose from, the meat was full of flavour thanks to the chef’s special herb and spiced butter sauce. The Aston Hall bacon beef

IMAGEEATING IN Delia Smith’s meringues with summer berries – see facing page

Words: Stephanie Burns

A QUESTION OF TASTE

Stuck for something tasty to cook this spring? Take inspiration from our light and healthy three-course menu and whip up something fun for the kids too.

STARTER

Jamie Oliver’s Greek vegetable kebabs Ingredients n 120g halloumi cheese n 1 yellow pepper n 1 courgette n 140g cherry tomatoes n Half a bunch of fresh mint n Half a fresh red chilli n 1 lemon n Olive oil n freshly ground black pepper Method 1 Put six wooden skewers into a tray of cold water to soak – this will stop them from burning. 2 On a chopping board, cut the halloumi into two centimetre cubes, then add to a large mixing bowl. 3 Carefully cut the pepper in half from top to bottom, then trim

IMAGEmagazine 30

away the stalk, seeds and any white pith (you can use a teaspoon), then slice into two-centimetre-long pieces and add to the bowl. 4 Cut the courgette in half lengthways, then cut into half-moon slices, roughly ½cm thick, then add to the bowl along with the tomatoes. 5 Pick the mint leaves onto a board and finely chop them, discarding the stalks. 6 Carefully de-seed and finely chop the chilli, if using. 7 Use a microplane to finely grate the lemon zest onto a board, then add to the bowl along with the mint leaves, chilli (if using), and two tablespoons of olive oil. 8 Season with a pinch of pepper, then mix well to coat. 9 Preheat the grill to high. 10 Lightly grease a baking tray with oil, then put aside. 11 Thread and divide the halloumi cubes, cherry tomatoes, pepper and courgette pieces between the skewers. 12 Place onto the greased tray and cook under the grill for 10 to 12 minutes, or until the cheese is golden and the veg are soft, turning halfway through. 13 Serve with a fresh green salad and some flatbreads or pittas.

MAIN

BBC Good Food’s teriyaki salmon parcels Ingredients n 2 tbsp low-salt soy sauce n 1 tbsp clear honey n 1 garlic clove, finely chopped n 1 tbsp mirin (optional) n a little sunflower oil n 300g tenderstem broccoli n 4 x 100g salmon fillets n 1 small piece of ginger, cut into matchsticks n a little sesame oil (optional) n sliced spring onions, toasted sesame seeds and cooked rice, to serve

Method 1 In a small bowl, whisk together the soy, honey, garlic and mirin and set aside. 2 Using scissors, cut out four squares of foil, each about 30cm square. Brush each piece of foil with a little oil and bring the edges of the foil up a little. 3 Place a couple of broccoli stems on each one, then sit a salmon fillet on top and scatter over the ginger. 4 Spoon the sauce over each salmon fillet and drizzle with a little sesame oil, if liked. 5 Fold over the edges of the foil together to seal and place the parcels on a baking sheet. Can be prepared up to a day ahead. 6 Heat oven to 200°C /180°C fan/gas 6. Place the parcels in the oven for 15-20 mins then leave to stand for a few mins. Serve each parcel on a plate and let each person open it themselves. Serve with spring onions and sesame seeds for scattering over, and some rice on the side.

DESSERT

Delia Smith’s meringues with summer berries Ingredients For the meringues n 2 large egg whites n 110g white caster sugar

n 1 rounded dessertspoon caster sugar n 1 tsp vanilla extract For the topping n 450g strawberries, raspberries and blueberries n A little icing sugar

For the filling n 250g mascarpone n 200ml fromage frais

Method 1 To make the meringues, place the egg whites in a large bowl and, using an electric hand whisk on a low speed, begin whisking. 2 Continue for about two minutes until the whites are foamy. Switch the speed to medium and whisk for one more minute.

3 Now turn the speed to high and continue whisking until the egg whites reach the stiff-peak stage. Whisk the sugar in on fast speed, a little at a time (about a dessertspoon), until you have a stiff and glossy mixture. 4 Spoon eight heaped dessertspoons of the mixture on to the prepared baking sheet, spacing them evenly. Then, using the back of the spoon or a small palette knife, hollow out the centres. 5 Pop them on the centre shelf of the oven, immediately reduce the heat to gas mark 1, 275°F (140°C) and leave them for 30 minutes. 6 Turn the oven off and leave the meringues to dry out in the warmth of the oven until it is completely cold (usually about four hours) or overnight. The meringues will store well in a tin or polythene box and will even freeze extremely well. 7 To assemble the meringues, whisk the filling ingredients together, spoon equal amounts into each meringue and top with equal amounts of the fruit. Dust with icing sugar before serving.

FOR THE KIDS

Method 1 To make the tomato sauce, empty the tomatoes into a saucepan and add the rest of the ingredients. Bring to the boil then turn down the heat so that the mixture simmers for about 30 minutes. You can store in the fridge until you are ready to use. 2 Preheat the oven to 200°C/180°C fan/gas 6. Grease one or two baking sheets. 3 Put the flour, yeast, sugar and salt into a bowl. Mix gently and make a well in the middle. Add the water and oil and mix into a soft dough that comes away from the edge of the bowl.

4 Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead for about 10 minutes. 5 Shape into two smaller pizzas or one large circle. Place on the greased baking sheets and spread with the tomato sauce. 6 Top with a generous sprinkling of the cheese of your choice and bake for 1525 minutes or until the crust is golden brown. 7 If you would like a thicker crust to your pizza, leave your dough to rise for 20 minutes before you add the sauce and topping.

IMAGEADVENTURE

Simon Lowe specialises in taking intrepid trekkers to Everest… but, as he tells Stephanie Burns, only a select few make it to the summit.

MOUNTAIN MAN ON TOP OF THE WORLD Simon Lowe

I

t’s my Everest’ is a term not usually associated with the actual mountain. But for the managing director of commercial expedition company Jagged Globe, Simon Lowe, it can be applied in literal terms. Because despite climbing the mountain countless times over the last few decades, he’s never – as those in the know refer to it – ‘summited’. Not personally, anyway. That doesn’t mean he has unfinished business. In his view, being leader of a group effort – when a team works together to allow just one or two to conquer the final ascent – is all that matters. And he’s done that several times. It’s this selfless philosophy that has secured Jagged Globe’s reputation as one of the world’s top trekking companies. Right here in Sheffield. Lucky us. Of course, when I say ‘us’, I’m not referring to me and – sorry – most of you. Because while Everest base camp jaunts are now all the rage for your average hill walker – we all heard the ‘too much poo on the mountain’ story earlier this year – conquering the world’s highest peak is another matter, and one only the real climbers can have a stab at. “We run one 64-day Everest summit trip a year as there’s a twomonth window during April and May when it’s OK to go – and you only want reasonably good people on that trip,” says Simon. www.regionalmagazine.co.uk

Up to 12 climbers who fit Jagged Globe’s strict criteria are recruited for this annual trek. It’s not cheap at £40,000 but, with a brilliant track record of getting climbers to the top of the mountain, it’s one of the best chances you’ll get to ‘summit’. “It’s uncomfortable emotionally and physically and we have to know that if something goes awry your decision making will be appropriate enough to get yourself out of the situation.” Former military man Simon knows better than most how important a sturdy mental state can be if the unexpected happens. In his army days, he once spent four days thinking he might die at any second while trapped in a tent on one of Everest’s slightly smaller neighbours, Kirat Chuli, during a particularly fierce storm. And though

there have been other near misses, in almost 30 years of business Jagged Globe has never lost a trekking team member on Everest. They did, however, lose a Sherpa, Pasang Karma, when the deadliest Everest avalanche on record hit the mountain last April, killing 16 guides in total. In spite of the tragedy, there has been no decline in take up for this year’s expeditions. “No-one has been under any doubt about the fact that you can go to Everest and get killed. People tend to be very self-selecting and, if they think they’re not going to make it to the top, they’ll tell us. Generally speaking, people are not reckless.” Longer trips that give climbers more chance to acclimatise help Jagged Globe trump its competitors. This also means a trip with them is more expensive, but it’s a small price to pay for both safety and success, and they have an excellent record for both. Risk, of course, is a huge part of the appeal for any adventurer – where would the thrill lie otherwise? But for Simon there’s another factor that has kept him returning to the Himalayas again and again – summit or not. “It’s immensely hard, there’s no two ways about it,” he states. “It’s like running a marathon; you don’t enjoy it at the time but it’s the achievement afterwards. “And there is simply nothing like the sense of freedom you get from being completely free of the modern world.”

GRABBING THE HEADLINES

From ska to glam rock and indie to pop, you’ll find something for everyone at this year’s Mosborough Music Festival, writes Fiona Barber. Don’t miss out!

A

s summer rolls around once again, for music lovers it means one thing – dig out your wellies, flowery headbands and face paint – the festival season has arrived. While many of us already have tickets booked for the big events like Glastonbury, Reading and Leeds, for those that are searching for a more local festival fix – minus the baby-wipe ‘showers’ and rain-flooded tents – look no further than Mosborough Music Festival. This year the charity-based festival celebrates its fifth anniversary, and with each event it has become more popular. The festival may boast big-name acts and record crowds now, but it was a humble beginning for the festival. The inspiration behind the event came after the sudden death of a local talented musician, Mark Thorley. Event organiser Steven Cowen said: “Mark had such talent and was a good friend and he played a big part in the rise of Mosborough football club. When we lost him I organised a fun day at Mosborough Miners Club to raise funds to put into an ISA for his then five-year-old son. We had charity football games and a

IMAGEmagazine 34

couple of bands on and it was so well attended that I thought of making the event annual.” Over the years they have chosen different charities to raise money for, resulting in raising over £25,000 for local charities including Bluebell Wood, Sheffield Children’s Hospital and Weston Park Hospital. This year’s chosen charity is Mosborough Community Sports Group, which helps to provide sports facilities for young and old. In previous years the festival has seen the likes of Reverend and the Makers, Paul Heaton, Bad Manners, Neville Staple, The Twang, The Farm, Lucy Spraggan and The Beautiful South revel on its stages. This year’s headliner is The Selecter, famous for their timeless ska music and hits like Too Much Pressure and On My Radio; Mosborough are delighted to have the band playing this year. Hailing from Coventry, The Selecter were formed in 1979 and headlined Tramlines in 2013. Led by the charismatic rude-girl lead singer, Pauline Black, The Selecter will undoubtedly get the crowd moving with their bouncing beats. www.regionalmagazine.co.uk

034 - 035 Image Apr15_Layout 1 01/04/2015 14:18 Page 2

Other acts include glam rock band Doctor and the Medics, Chris Helme (The Seahorses), Missing Andy and Marquis Drive, who cover songs from the likes of The Stone Roses, Happy Mondays, Oasis and Pulp. Two bands highly anticipated to be crowd favourites this year are Midlands-based The Assist and Scunthorpe’s Dirty Sterling. Top ska band Jungle Lion are also on the bill and Mosborough will welcome one of Doncaster’s finest five-piece bands, The 48K’s. As well as big-name acts, Mosborough Music Festival also strives to support Sheffield’s own. This year audiences will be treated to the talents of local sassy singer Jade Hewitt, who recently sung her heart out on BBC1’s The Voice and her audition had the chairs of Rita Ora and Ricky Wilson pressing their buttons and spinning their chairs. Although she lost out in the battle round against contestant Christina Matovu, mentor and fellow Yorkshireman Ricky described Jade’s voice as a cannon ball, and she’s ready to blow the crowds at Mosborough Music Festival away too. Adding a dash of diversity to the festival is professional busker James Anthony Lamb. Couple all these great acts with some of Sheffield’s best up and coming bands including The Sherlocks, The SSS, The Monday Club, The Starkins and The Carousel, and Mosborough really has a top-quality line up.

World-class competition Combining thrilling equestrian sport with entertainment for all the family, the Dodson and Horrell International Chatsworth Horse Trials is an event like no other.

S

erene countryside, flowing manes and the sound of thundering hooves can only mean one thing: the highlight of the equestrian calendar – Chatsworth International Horse Trials – is on the horizon. You can expect three days (15-17 May) of thrilling world-class competition, combining beautiful dressage, nail-biting show jumping and dramatic cross country around the parkland at Chatsworth. Set in the heart of the Peak District, the house and its magnificent grounds are home to the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire. The couple are known equine sports lovers – the Duke served as chairman of Ascot for over a decade, while the Duchess owns a number of prize-winning animals, which makes Chatsworth – and its 1,000 acres of beautiful parkland – the perfect location for these trials. The weekend showcases some of the world’s leading horses and riders, attracting spectators from far and wide. Previous winners include Andrew Nicholson, Pippa Funnell and William Fox-Pitt. Although the horses and their riders will, of course, take centre stage throughout the weekend, there’s also an exciting varied programme of arena events too. This includes a sheep show, with New Zealander Richard Savory and his presenters entertaining and educating with their fantastic sheep. The highlight will be the sheep show hustle or dancing sheep. If two-stepping sheep aren’t really your thing, there will be a falconry display, the British scurry and trials driving, have-a-go dog agility and dog show, pony club mounted games and Mullenscote Gun Dog display, which will demonstrate varying breeds and ages from puppies to fully trained dogs.

IMAGEmagazine 36

Away from the arena, there is a children’s entertainment area with mini Land Rovers, farmyard animals, face painting, a bouncy castle and a giant slide. Plus over 100 high-quality trade stands selling a wide selection of country clothing, equestrian products, fashion accessories, crafts and delicious food. The Dodson and Horrell International Chatsworth Horse Trials truly is three days of thrilling equestrian sport, combined with entertainment for all the family in the beautiful surroundings of Chatsworth – an event not to be missed.

Your Guide to Eventing: Equestrian eventing isn’t mere horseplay – it’s a showcase of skill and determination. Its three disciplines – dressage, cross country and show jumping – are designed to test both horses and riders in a variety of different ways. The successful competitor will be able to demonstrate an ability to move seamlessly between them – but that’s no easy task…

Dressage While dressage may seem the calmest of the three disciplines, it’s arguably the most difficult – one that demands many years of training in order to succeed. ‘Horse ballet’, as it’s known, requires the rider to display precise control of the horse as it performs a series of movements, including pirouettes and gaits. Points are awarded for grace and fluidity, and the aim is to show perfect harmony between horse and rider.

Cross country Considered by many to be the highlight of the trials, cross country is fast paced and action packed. Horse and rider race against the clock around Chatsworth Park on the banks of the River Derwent. The challenging course is filled with seemingly impossible fences and solid obstacles – including some of the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire’s hand-carved wooden sculptures. There’s an obvious amount of skill involved, but this discipline involves a fair bit of courage too – not for the faint-hearted.

Show jumping The show jumping stage of the trials takes place in an arena and sees competitors tackling fences made of brightly coloured poles. As ever, athleticism and control are of vital importance – penalties are given for every second over the allotted time, horse disobedience, knocking off a pole and failing to complete the course in the set order. www.regionalmagazine.co.uk

VIP membership area: Enjoy exclusive access to the VIP Membership area, which offers an enhanced experience in relaxed surroundings with exclusive ringside access for the show jumping action, fresh food, bar service, garden area and private toilets. Membership includes admission, car parking and a free programme and an offer to visit Chatsworth house, garden, farmyard and adventure playground. Advance booking: Friday £20, Saturday £25, Sunday £30. Three-day passes are available at £54. Visit www.chatsworth.org for tickets and more information. IMAGEMOTORING

Porsche’s new Cayman GT4 finally looks set to give the 911 a run for its money, writes Jordan Cutforth.

Hyundai takes the lead in the supermini stakes The coupé version of Hyundai’s i20 is on sale now. With 336-litres of boot space, it is more spacious than its five-door counterpart (326-litres), meaning that, even though it has gained a much sportier appearance, it is now the class leader in the supermini segment. Starting at £12,725, the entry level model will give you the SE trim which offers the likes of 16” alloys, Bluetooth connection and parking sensors. The upgraded Sport trim adds 17.7-inch alloys, climate control and automatic lights. The topline Sport Nav trim adds a 7-inch touch screen with satellite navigation, DAB radio and a rear view camera. An 83bhp 1.2-litre petrol and a 89bhp 1.4-litre diesel will be offered. The petrol has a fivespeed manual gearbox. The diesel, a six-speed manual.

Renault reboots the Megane If the RenaultSport Megane 275 is too hardcore for you, then say hello to the GT 220. It’s an ordinary Megane with larger front wheels and tyres, larger 320mm front brakes, stiffer springs and dampers, a chassis fettled by RenaultSport and a de-tuned 220bhp version of the same engine fitted to the RS Megane. 0-62mph takes 7.6 seconds. Top speed is 149mph and it achieves 38.7mpg on the combined cycle with emissions of 169g/km of CO2. Power is driven through the front wheels via a six-speed manual gearbox. Standard equipment includes dual-zone climate control, cruise control, Bluetooth, sat-nav, a rear parking camera, automatic headlights and wipers, USB connection and a 3D sound system. Prices for the hatch are £23,245, coupé £24,230 and Sport Tourer £24,245.

Porsche’s Cayman GT4 set to cause a stir Porsche stated that a faster version of their mid-engined Cayman would never happen because it would turn out to be better than a 911. Well, here’s the Cayman GT4, and on paper, it sure as hell might be. Underneath there’s a 385bhp version of the engine found in the Carrera S which Porsche claims provides a 0-62mph time of 4.4 seconds, a top speed of 183mph and 27.4mpg.

www.regionalmagazine.co.uk

There’s a 30mm drop in ride-height over a standard Cayman, the chassis’s been finetuned with many components taken from the 911 GT3, and there’s the addition of a new front bumper and a fixed rear wing to improve downforce on both axles. Only a six-speed manual will be offered. Prices start from £64,451. Available to order now.

New Superb makes its debut Welcome to the stage the brand new Skoda Superb. It’ will be built on the MQB platform, meaning it will be lighter than its predecessor while improving on overall space. The boot now holds 625 litres – 1,760 litres with the rear seats folded. Front seat occupants have 39mm more elbow and head room with rear seat occupants enjoying 69mm more elbow room and 157mm more leg room. The petrol and diesel engines available will all be four-cylinder turbo jobs. The entry diesel unit will be a 118bhp 1.6-litre with the most powerful being a 187bhp 2.0-litre. The entry petrol engine will be a 148bhp 1.4-litre with the most potent being the same 2.0-litre, 276bhp unit from the Seat Leon Cupra. Prices start around £20,000. On sale in June.

YORKSHIRE RIDES AGAIN

Ready for the off (from left): Malcolm Elliott, Marc Etches and Brian Robinson

After the excitement of last year’s Grand Depart, cycle fever is set to strike once more as the world’s best riders head back to the region. Stephanie Burns reports.

egacy was a hot topic in the run up to the Tour de France Yorkshire Grand Depart last summer. Determined not to waste a golden opportunity to promote the many benefits of God’s own county once the millions-strong crowds had dispersed, organisers began planning for life posttour well before the cyclists tore up our streets. And so it was with great enthusiasm that plans for a Tour de Yorkshire were first announced in September last year. This three-day international cycling event – run by Welcome to Yorkshire and Amaury Sport Organisation (which operates the Tour de France) and backed by British Cycling – will once again challenge the world’s best riders to tackle what is arguably some of the world’s best cycling terrain. Taking place in three stages from 1 to 3 May and designed by the Tour de France’s sports director Thierry Gouvenou, it will touch upon some Grand Depart routes as well as breaking new ground elsewhere. Day one covers 174km and travels from

Bridlington to Scarborough via Pickering, Whitby and Robin Hoods Bay. It picks up in York the next day for another 174km of riding through Malton, Wetwang and Beverley before making its way to the finish line in Selby. The third and final day – a 167km route – begins in Wakefield, drops down to Barnsley and then comes up through Holmfirth, Hebden Bridge, and Otley, finally sprinting into Leeds. Though Sheffield didn’t make the cut this time, the third stage of the tour – on Sunday 3 May – comes agonisingly close as Barnsley gets its turn in the spotlight. If you’re looking to relive the buzz of the Grand Depart, you’d be wise to take a short trip up the M1 to catch the action live here at around 12.40pm. Of course, the broadcast on national television and throughout Europe will also allow you to follow the full race as it happens so, wherever you are, you needn’t miss the opportunity to witness another showcase of our beautiful county in high-def.
