EATING OUT

New vision A RECENT RESTAURANT REBOOT, AND THE ADDITION OF A NEW COCKTAIL AND GIN BAR, TEMPTED PHOEBE SEYMOUR INTO MAKING THE JOURNEY TO RENISHAW. ast year, the fate of The Sitwell Arms was in the balance, when it was announced that the Renishaw hotel was in direct way of the proposed HS2 route. But then in September, managing director Jo-Anne Oldfield received official confirmation that the UK’s new high speed rail network would be skirting east of their beautiful ten-acre site, saving it from the bulldozer. And I, along with their many loyal customers, am thanking my lucky stars that the venue is here to stay. This former 18th century coaching house not only makes a luxurious place to stay, it is also home to a salon offering relaxing treatments, a well-equipped gym, events facilities and The Wild Boar Restaurant. The restaurant has recently had a reboot and thanks to executive chef Daniel Nutt’s talent and Jo-Anne’s vision, it’s now home to a delicious and varied a la carte menu, a cosy dining area and a brand new cocktail and gin bar. On entering the Wild Boar Restaurant, there was no-denying the beauty of their dining area with its stained glass window, wooden beams and old-fashioned fireplace and stove, topped with glowing lanterns. But first, my sister Naomi and I were whisked to the bar to enjoy a glass of Sauvignon Blanc (175ml, £5) and a mini bottle of Prosecco Cuvee (20cl, £5.95),

L

though we made a mental note to return to try the award-winning Renishaw Hall Madeleine Avegevine (£19.95 by the bottle) from their impressive wine list. Then it was over to the dining area to tuck into our starters. My vegetable soup of the day (£4.50) was thick with earthy undertones, beautifully complemented by a warm bread roll – a good testament to a great chef. Naomi had selected the enticing George Stafford black pudding with crispy pancetta, potato rosti and soft poached egg (£5.75), an impressive and delectable tower, which was quickly demolished. For mains I had my heart set on the mushroom, chestnut and stilton Wellington (£15.95). However, I wanted to switch the stilton for goat’s cheese and the staff were happy to oblige me. I was rewarded with two generous slices, wrapped in a crisp and golden pastry, accompanied by a dauphinoise potato, asparagus spears, red wine sauce and a side of seasonal vegetables. Naomi had the pan fried chicken fillet (£17.25) from the specials board, which was balanced on a bed of chorizo, black olive and sun blush tomato sauce and garlic fried potatoes and green beans, giving the dish a Mediterranean twist. After looking at the menu online earlier that day, Naomi had been dreaming about the salted caramel brownie (£5.95) all day and

was in no doubt. Gooey pieces of brownie with toffee sauce and clotted cream ice cream contrasted delightfully with crunchy peanut brittle, creating a pudding perfect for a sweet tooth. The assiette of desserts (£6.95) made up of three mini puddings; warm blackcurrant frangipane, chocolate and raspberry torte, and strawberry, passionfruit and mango delice, provided a light and varied taster of everything. If you haven’t yet been to The Wild Boar, I urge diners to give this gem a go. Don’t worry – it isn’t going anywhere. MUSIC

A festival for the whole family MOSFEST IS BACK. AND, IT’S BIGGER AND BETTER THAN EVER. BY RACHEL MARTIN.

lastonbury may be taking a wellearned rest this year, but if you were planning to party the summer away, don’t despair – ditch your wellies and head to MosFest instead. Taking place on 2 June at Don Valley Bowl, the music kicks-off at 10.45am, with a combination of 27 acts across three stages and various genres to satisfy everyone’s tastes. And, boasting one of the most diverse line-ups yet, MosFest is set to see its biggest crowds to date as it celebrates its eighth anniversary. Headliners Bad Manners, Pigeon Detectives, Twisted Wheel and The Christians are set to blow festival-goers away with their own unique and inimitable styles, and in addition to the main acts, the festival will play host to the talents of many local (and a few not so local) musicians. Tom Hingleys Kar-Pets, Ferocious Dog, The Courtbetweeners, Dare, Winachi Tribe, Cellar Door Moon Crow and The Harringtons are

G

set to leave an equally astounding impression on audiences of all ages and musical backgrounds with their energetic and soulful performances, and there’s plenty more talent completing the line-up. This year’s event will raise money for Hallam FM’s Cash for Kids, and as always, the festival will be catering for families, with a funfair and kids’ rides on site. And for mum, dad, grandma and grandad, there will be various offerings of food and drink, including the festival bar.

The Pigeon Detectives

Adult’s tickets are priced at £25 and juniors £8 – making for one of the more affordable festivals in the local area. And those who like the finer things can pay £100 for a VIP ticket, which entitles you to a free bar all day and the opportunity to meet performing bands, as well as a string of other privileges. The full line-up is accessible to view online and tickets can be purchased from the festival’s website: www.mosboroughmusicfestival.co.uk

MUSIC

IMAGE’S PICK OF THE LOCAL TALENT AT THIS YEAR’S MOSFEST:

BAD MANNERS

The Harringtons

Bad Manners are an English two-tone and ska band led by frontman Buster Bloodvessel. They were at their most popular during the early 1980s, during a period when other ska revival bands such as Madness, the Specials and the Selecter filled the charts and spent 111 weeks in the UK Singles Chart between 1980 and 1983. They also achieved chart success with their first four studio albums with Gosh It’s... Bad Manners, Loonee Tunes! and Ska ‘n’ B

Forming in 2014 at the age of 16, The Harringtons are a fresh-faced, feel-good rock ‘n’ roll trio from Sheffield, who have a fresh outlook on music, taking influence from mod-culture and vintage styles. Mixed with other guitar-based music from the nineties, They classify their style as ‘neo-vintage’ which brings classic indie guitar music into this century, while adding a new spin.

Pigeon Detectives Friends since school, the Pigeon Detectives, who formed in 2004 in Rothwell in Leeds, enjoyed a meteoric rise in the UK music scene. Signed to local label Dance To The Radio, their first record Wait For Me went on to sell more than 500,000 records, charting at number three in the UK album chart.

Twisted Wheel Twisted Wheel formed in February 2007 in Saddleworth, Greater Manchester and are embraced for their strong melodies, psychedelic themes and irreverent poignant lyrics. The band gained a following amongst old mods/punks and younger heads looking for music which represented their generation and influences span folk and 1950s/1960s bands.

THE CHRISTIANS The Christians are a musical ensemble from Liverpool, who had several UK and international chart hits in the late 1980s and early 1990s. In Rock: The Rough Guide, critic Charles Bottomley, describes them as “The Temptations in ripped jeans, producing grittycentred songs in a sugary vocal shell”.

Rural retreat COUNTRY CHIC HAS BEEN GIVEN A MODERN TWIST. BY PHOEBE SEYMOUR. orget everything you thought you knew about country décor. Forget the traditional chequered sofas, animal ornaments and distressed shabby chic furniture. This year, it’s all about adding a modern twist to a classic British look. No country home would be complete without a sumptuous armchair, but opt for one with metallic legs or a less typical shape to give your living room an edge. Stoves and kettles are more cottage-esque must-haves for those colder spring days, as are plenty of blankets, but ditch the tartan for on-trend geometric or plain throws in neutral beiges or warming browns. Reclaimed furniture is another way to add a rough and ready, yet stylish, centrepiece to your dining and living areas. Wicker baskets,

GARDENS

Spicing up a small space WHO SAYS SIZE MATTERS? WHEN IT COMES TO YOUR GARDEN, YOU DON’T NEED ROOM TO IMPRESS, WRITES EMILY SMITH. ring life back into your home this spring by making the most of a small garden. With winter well behind us, there’s no excuse to keep your backyard on the back-burner – and reviving limited outdoor space doesn’t need to be a game of Tetris. Grab your shovel and dig into these tips on growing a green thumb.

B

Upcycling Rather than throwing away old wooden furniture, tempt your creative side by repurposing them outdoors. Repaint and reuse broken shelves as storage for plants, use bright chairs to add a quirky character, or even repurpose a birdbath as a plant pot. With upcycling you can make the most of what you already have, without any extra spending. www.upcycled-wonders.com/garden 36 Image | www.imagemagazine.co.uk

Adjust the lighting Turn up the lights – and the liveliness – of a small garden by adding a sense of spark. Combining fairy lights within foliage, dotting lanterns around furniture, or even highlighting a pathway, can all jazz up a gloomy space. This growing trend has seen solar powered lighting skyrocket, so maintenance isn’t an issue for scatter-brains. www.thesolarcentre.co.uk

GARDENS

A pop of colour Through perky plant pots and cheerful furniture, a small pop of colour can go a long way for a small space. Freshening up with florals gives a brighter appearance, and doing this through pots allows hassle-free portability when you fancy a change.

Plant hangers Grow your garden upwards with hanging planters, without jeopardising precious floor space. Ceramic plant hangers, flower baskets, and tiered pots allow you to exploit all angles of your backyard, and they can even be made at home. Incorporate wooden climbers along walls for vines to spread on, for an even cosier feel.

Fire features

Flowing features

Fire pits add a striking style – and a surge of heat – to a chilly garden, all whilst having a cosy feel. Adding anything from a chiminea, barbeque, or a contemporary fire pit means the excuse of it being too cold won’t be an issue, and is perfect for an evening get together.

Implementing a water-based feature brings a calming flow to your garden with minimal effort. A bird bath, tiered fountain or cascading water piece can sit happily in any corner of your garden and take up little room, or act as a grand centrepiece.

Houseplants Bring the houseplant bandwagon into your home by adding low-maintenance plants to empty shelves or windowsills. This feel-good décor technique will see you reap the benefits of air purification, reducing levels of dust and stabilising air temperatures. Pothos plants, English Ivy or Peace Lilies are promising picks. www.midwestliving.com/garden/container/super-easy-house-plants

Grow your own With the growing trend of health consciousness, knowing how and where your food comes from is something we’re all aware of. Growing your own herbs and spices at home – from tomatoes to lavender – allows you combine practicality with charm, all whilst eliminating the worry of where your food has come from. www.rhs.org.uk/advice/grow-your-own Image | www.imagemagazine.co.uk 37

TAKING GREAT PRIDE IN THEIR CUSTOMER SERVICE, NEWLY-EXTENDED AUTOHAUS DOLBY IS PERFECTLY PLACED TO SERVICE YOUR VOLKSWAGEN GROUP VEHICLE. ou may choose a car based on your lifestyle, or perhaps you trust a particular make or model. But it is just as important to find a garage that fully understands and uses the correct equipment for your vehicle. If you drive a Volkswagen, Audi, Seat or Skoda, help is at hand. Autohaus Dolby only work on Volkswagen group cars and vans and provide the sort of brand-specific knowledge you’d expect from a franchised dealer, only at independent prices. Established ten years ago by Matt Dolby, this independent business offers a comprehensive service for Volkswagen owners, tailored to their specific vehicle. The staff at Autohaus Dolby have specialist knowledge of the brand and pride themselves on their friendly and approachable service. “Out of everything we do, our major service with comprehensive service checklist is the most popular and helpful thing we

offer our customers and it’s testament to what Autohaus Dolby is all about,” says Matt. “Customer service and creating more positive and personal relationships with our customers is just as important to us. They’re not isolated from the person who works on their vehicle so they can really get a good understanding of what goes into keeping it in great shape.” The garage, based within easy reach of Sheffield, Rotherham and Barnsley at Century Street Industrial Estate, has a cosy office where you can help yourself to a coffee and talk to a member of their team. The garage also recently had an extension and can now cater for even more vehicles. Autohaus Dolby uses Volkswagen’s own service schedule, original equipment parts and specialised equipment to deal with any VW group model. Working alongside Aran Haigh and Al Crookes, whose knowledge of such vehicles is second to none, Matt and the team

We do a proper job, offer a more personal service than the dealer and we are considerably cheaper,” adds Matt. “Even the tools we use are specially designed for Volkswagen group vehicles. All modern cars need modern equipment and we are always up to date in that department.” Matt and his team are happy to repair or service everything from old split screen VW campervans, to the latest car models, but they are also moving with the trends of tomorrow too. The team are now taking on turbo-diesel and hybrid vehicles. A fast charging service is available for all Autohaus customers. BACK IN BLOOM THIS YEAR’S RHS CHATSWORTH FLOWER SHOW PROMISES TO BE A RIOT OF COLOUR AND EXOTIC BLOOMS. RACHEL MARTIN PREVIEWS WHAT’S IN STORE

Visitors will be able to try out an immersive 3D virtual reality experience

42 Image | www.imagemagazine.co.uk

et in the magnificent 1,000-acre Chatsworth Estate, the RHS Chatsworth Flower Show, partnered by Wedgwood will return from 6 - 10 June with exciting new content, including a river of 12,000 Cosmos and more than 100 varieties of orchid. During Joseph Paxton’s time as head gardener the Chatsworth Estate boasted one of the most extensive orchid collections in the UK, and at this year’s show celebrity floral designer, Jonathan Moseley will join forces with Double H Nurseries to bring one of the UK’s largest orchid displays back to the estate. Housed within a bespoke representation of Joseph Paxton’s Great Conservatory, the display will feature over 100 varieties of the popular Phalaenopsis Orchid, creating an immersive floral extravaganza. The exotic blooms, in a sumptuous palette of lilacs, whites, purple, pale and cerise pink will adorn a central waterfall, and suspended from the ceiling will be a riot of sculptural branches, with large chandeliers dripping with mosses and tropical bromeliads from which will hang a further explosion of vibrant orchids. A Virtual Reality experience created by 3D expert and VR designer, Simon Mabey alongside Manchester Museum and Manchester University will immerse visitors further in the tropical display as they sit suspended amongst the flowers, experiencing the wonder of different orchids through the eyes of an insect. Moseley will also be at all the RHS shows with his British Flower Bus, where spectators can climb on board, see gorgeous British blooms and join him for demonstrations and free arrangement workshops using local grown flowers.

RHS CHATSWORTH FLOWER SHOW

And for the first time at an RHS Show, a mass planting of over 12,000 Cosmos will create a striking vision of pink in front of the iconic Chatsworth House, for visitors to walk amongst and enjoy the sweet scent and beauty of this elegant summer flower. The important role plants play within cities will also be explored in the new Living Laboratory, showcasing some of the great ways plants can help both now and in the future as urban living intensifies. Plants and technology will be on display highlighting how different varieties can help address a number of urban challenges including pollution, flooding and food scarcity. Other show highlights include show gardens inspired by local landscapes, including The Great Outdoors Garden by Sheffield based designer Phil Hirst and a celebration of Hay Time in Yorkshire by Chris Myers. Continuing the agricultural theme, The John Deere Garden by Elspeth Stockwell and Jo Fairfax takes inspiration from farm buildings, ploughed wheat fields and natural woodland borders and will feature a circular sculpture of 100 tractors, celebrating the company’s centenary year of tractors. The history of Chatsworth House provides inspiration for some of the new innovative installations at this year’s show, and show partner, Wedgwood are working

with Chatsworth’s head of gardens and landscape Steve Porter and craftsman Carl Hardman of Landmark Walling to celebrate the ancient heritage craft of dry stone walling, an important feature in the British landscape. A ‘lost’ village that once stood in the shadow of Chatsworth House before being removed to make way for Capability Brown’s famous landscape is the inspiration behind Brewin Dolphin’s installation designed by multi award winning designer, Paul Hervey-Brookes. Liz Patterson, RHS Chatsworth Flower Show manager says: “We’ve been going all out in the Chatsworth team preparing some fabulous new experiences for the 2018 show. “On top of the exciting new content, the floral marquees will be bursting with top growers and nurseries and we have a fantastic line up of experts in the garden and artisan kitchen theatres hosting Q&A sessions, talks and demos throughout the week. “Visitors will also be able to get creative in the artisan craft area and we will see the return of the popular well dressing competition, plus lots more.”

What inspired you to become one of the UK’s leading floral designers?

Flowers are the most wonderful natural resource to work with – they have a transient beauty that requires specialist care and attention. Working with nature is hugely rewarding and I enjoy seeing the pleasure flowers give people - they make you smile and are one of the most easily obtainable pleasure fixes within this highly charged and ever challenging world. How did you develop your signature style?

Age and maturity gives you a confidence to relax into a style of designing that you feel comfortable with, and the experience to remain true and loyal to your design instincts. However in floral design you must constantly evolve to meet new challenges. I love large massed, naturalistic designs and for me it’s about allowing the flowers

RHS CHATSWORTH FLOWER SHOW

Flowers are the most wonderful natural resource to work with – they have a transient beauty that requires specialist care and attention. You’re a British Flower Ambassador, why are you such a passionate advocate for British flowers?

British flowers possess a charm and a character that is sadly lacking within the majority of imported commercial blooms. For me, British flowers are synonymous with seasonality. We should support our UK flower farmers. I’m passionate and committed to seeing more varieties of cut flowers being grown here within the UK and ensuring that these precious blooms are easily available for florists to purchase. Collectively we are supporting our farmers, florists and keeping the local high streets alive and buoyant. Where do you look for inspiration?

The countryside, as Mother Nature is the greatest flower arranger and it’s to her whom I aspire, alongside my garden which is also an intoxicating palette of inspiration. I believe that to understand floristry you have to have a knowledge of the garden. The elixir of floristry is walking into the garden, gathering flowers and if you nurture your growing plants, understand their needs and how they grow that’s the biggest clue on how to arrange them. What is the biggest challenge facing the floral industry?

and foliage to have a voice. They are like people and are happiest when seated next to someone whose company they enjoy. Why did you choose to showcase orchids at Chatsworth Flower Show?

Orchids have a strong connection to Chatsworth as The Batchelor Duke was a keen plant collector, and along with his Head Gardener Sir Joseph Paxton he introduced more than 80 different species of orchids to Chatsworth, eventually becoming one of the most extensive collections in the country. It seems fitting that my installation will be

housed in a replica structure of Paxton's Great Pavilion, giving visitors the opportunity to immerse themselves within a fantastical world where orchids reign supreme. Sparking waterfalls, textured mosses, exotic bromeliads and a variety of exotic textured seed heads and branches will play host to a dazzling display of orchids. Phalaenopsis orchids will be prominent with over 4,000 plants being incorporated within the design, and they’ll be accompanied by exotic Vanda orchids, Miltonias, Oncidiums, Cymbidiums, and Dendrobiums.

As with many retail sectors floristry is under constant attack from the large scale multiple retailers. Flower prices have risen by over a third since Brexit, and they are seen as a luxury item, which are often the first to be cut during times of financial constraints. Florists have to be different and provide a service that is bespoke and tailored to the fashionable market place which is where the floristry industry sits. There is no room now for sellers of flowers and forward looking florists create a lifestyle product that is specialised, desired and unique. Finally, what would you say your favourite flower is?

My favourites are endless but I would have to say the humble snowdrop. I love how this simple innocent flower braves the depths of winter to reveal its pearly white pendulous head. They withstand frost and snow and herald the start of the garden reawakening. For me that is the impetus to start the creative journey as another floral year unfolds. WHAT’S HAPPENING

MUMMY’S THE WORD FOR HOSPICE SHOP RARE FIND Why go to the trouble of excavating in the legendary Valley of the Kings for a piece of Ancient Egypt when you can just as easily pop into your nearest St Luke’s Hospice shop? Staff at the Crystal Peaks St Luke’s shop were intrigued when they discovered what appeared to be an antique Egyptian artefact in a box of donations left anonymously at the store. Area retail manager Chris Quinlan decided the find was worth exploring further and contacted world-leading archaeologist, author and TV and radio broadcaster Dr Joann Fletcher who quickly confirmed that the broken piece of pottery was indeed an ancient Egyptian Shabti, dating back to the days of the pharaohs. Shabtis – which look like miniature Egyptian mummies – were placed in tombs among the grave goods of the dead and were intended to act as servants or minions for the deceased, should they be called upon to do manual labour in the afterlife.

The Shabti left at the Crystal Peaks shop has lost its bottom section somewhere along its long journey from an Egyptian tomb to a Sheffield shopping mall but remains a finely decorated example of Egyptian arts and crafts dating back several thousand years. Despite being incomplete, it is still believed to be worth around £150 to £200 to a collector interested in antiquities. “This proves yet again that it’s always worth having a good look around your nearest St Luke’s shop because you really don’t know what you’re going to discover,” said Crystal Peaks shop manager Lana Beech.

“It’s incredible that something that has survived for thousands of years should end up on our shelves.” The Shabti is being sold through the St Luke’s eBay page. Visit the St Luke’s website at www.stlukeshospice.org.uk and follow the eBay link in the shops section.

Do you have time to volunteer at St Luke’s shops? St Luke’s Hospice is calling for more volunteers to help support its hugely popular Crystal Peaks shop. Roles currently on offer include everything from customer liaison and meet and greet to stock steaming, stockroom assistant and till operation. There are volunteer opportunities available at Crystal Peaks – one of the chain of 14 awardwinning St Luke’s shops throughout the city – throughout the week and especially on Saturdays. And a volunteer post could lead to valuable qualifications for anybody wanting to improve their chances of finding permanent work in the retail sector. “Giving a few hours of your time to help in our shops is not only very helpful to us but can also be a great way to get some retail qualifications and experience,” said St Luke’s volunteer coordinator Francesca Bradshaw. “We are offering an NVQ qualification for volunteers fulfilling at least 16 hours per week. This is a Level 2 qualification which can be done alongside your normal shift.” Anybody interesting in volunteering at Crystal Peaks should call 0114 235 7548 or email: f.bradshaw@hospicesheffield.co.uk

Wishing well money donated to aid bird conservation The coins from the beautiful wishing well at the Tropical Butterfly House, Wildlife & Falconry Centre, have been painstakingly counted and donated to Sorby Breck Ringing Group, to aid the conservation of native bird species. £1,684.80 was the final count, in coins, donated from visitors via the wishing well over the last five years. Since 2012, Chris Lilley, a volunteer bird ringer from Sorby Breck Ringing Group, who holds a British Trust for Ornithology bird ringing permit, has regularly visited the wildlife centre throughout the year. Ringing birds is essential to learn about how long they live, and when and where they move, questions that are vital for bird conservation. Chris Lilley catches wild birds using mist nets, then places a uniquely numbered metal ring on a leg of each bird. He also places rings on the nestlings of birds in the 100+ bird boxes around the wildlife centre. During the last five years rings have been placed on a whopping 1,340 birds caught in mist nets, and 772 nestlings, of which 863 have been re-caught, including several birds ringed elsewhere. The Tropical Butterfly House, Wildlife & Falconry Centre, is one of only six locations in the UK, where Tree Sparrows survival rates are regularly monitored. Joanne McDonough, operations manager at the Tropical Butterfly House, Wildlife & Falconry Centre, said: “We are very grateful to Chris, and the Sorby Breck Ringing Group, who voluntarily donate their time to help gather vital information for bird conservation. The recent snow storms show how easily bird numbers can suddenly drop, and we need to do whatever we can to help, in the hope that no more animal species become extinct.”

Sheffield mums raise almost £100,000 for top city charities Mum’s the word for the Sheffield charity supporters who have raised almost £100,000 for some of the city’s favourite organisations. Sheffield Mums Against Cancer is the group headed by Ceri Rogers and her friends, which raises cash for charities including St Luke’s Hospice and Weston Park Hospital. Their Big Sparkly Fundraiser at Baldwin’s Omega raised almost £20,000 in one glamorous night that included an auction where items up for grabs included signed Anthony Joshua boxing gloves and shorts and a Liam Gallagher solo album and signed print. The event means that the group has now raised more than £97,000 for charities in just five years. “This is a truly extraordinary achievement,” said St Luke’s community fundraising manager Megan Senior. “Ceri and her tireless group of friends are an outstanding example of fundraising at its finest and the work they do really does make an enormous difference to the lives of so many Sheffield people.” Image | www.imagemagazine.co.uk 49

MOTORING

The wait is over The Ferrari that everybody has been waiting for: say ‘ciao’ to the Ferrari 488 Pista. Why is this the car people have been waiting for? Simple – how it looks and how it drives. The previous generations to this car, the 360 Challenge Stradale, 430 Scuderia and 458 Speciale, were all absolutely fantastic to drive and this new 488 Pista, should be the most ballistic model variant yet. Compared to the 488 GTB, the new model weighs an impressive 90kg less (1280kg dry). Combine this with a horsepower figure of 710hp, increased torque and 20 per cent more downforce, and you’ll have a car which it as comfortable tearing up the Silverstone F1 circuit as it is trundling through Sheffield city centre.
