They can spray doors to high gloss or satin finishes using durable Two Pac paint. With larger companies, you will often see doors advertised as having a ‘high-gloss finish’. This means that they are vinyl-wrapped and, although this does produce a shiny look, it means that you will be able to see the joins. David J Martin’s professional sprayer can apply any colour you wish in their paintspraying booth, giving a modern finish with no joins. That means water cannot seep in and cause peeling – something that can happen with vinyl-wrapped doors. Everything is done in-house, which enables David to guarantee high quality at every stage. T
he government announced in its recent budget that the inheritance tax threshold for couples would rise to £1million. But while at first this may seem like cause for celebration, what does it really mean for those planning the future of their estate? Currently, if your estate (including money, property and investments, minus debts and funeral costs) is worth more than £325,000 – or, if you’re a couple, £650,000 – the value above that threshold will be taxed at 40 per cent upon your death. The recent changes will boost the thresholds to £500,000 and £1million, respectively. However, as Emilda Morgans of Wosskow Brown explains, the increases are not as simple as they may seem. “There will eventually be the potential for each person to have an extra £175,000 untaxed. But the limit only applies if you are leaving your property to your children. It is also not an immediate change, as the higher allowances are being introduced gradually.” An extra £100,000 will be added to the threshold in 2017, followed by an additional £75,000 the following year. So, by 2018, couples will have the potential for a combined tax-free limit of £1million. “The Conservative promise was to increase the inheritance tax-free threshold to £1million,” continues Emilda. “They have delivered this but it is not as straightforward as it seems and we are encouraging everyone to seek professional advice to understand how the new rules actually work in practice.”

English tradition Afternoon tea is one of many new additions at Ward’s Nurseries and Garden Centre, writes Fiona Barber.
T
here is one tradition that has not only stood the test of time, but has also soared in popularity over the last few years. The renaissance of afternoon tea shows no signs of slowing and has become as synonymous with our fair isle’s heritage as Sunday roasts and discussing the weather. Afternoon tea was typically a grand affair, where upper-class women wearing long gowns, gloves and hats would meet in the drawing room and nibble sandwiches and drink tea in the middle of the afternoon. Nowadays it is much more accessible and affordable, and can be enjoyed as a relaxed late lunch, or as an occasional indulgence to celebrate special events such as Mother’s Day. For those looking to enjoy a taste of tea in tranquil surroundings, Ward’s Nurseries and Garden Centre recently added another string to its already impressive bow, by offering customers a delicious afternoon tea from 2pm until 5pm. Director Sue Poulton says: “We started doing cream teas in the afternoon and they proved so popular we decided to expand on the idea.” I decided to put this newest addition to the test on a recent visit and ordered tea for one, along with an Americano. Although the sandwiches are a selection of the chef’s choice, if there is anything you’d prefer not to have – smoked salmon in my case – the staff at Ward’s are happy to oblige. Four sandwiches and three desserts came delicately arranged on a classic two-tiered plate. The Little Cupcake clothing savoury assortment included wonderfully gooey brie, which was offset by a sweet cranberry sauce, classic ham, a smooth cream cheese and cucumber, and a flavoursome tuna mayonnaise. While I was tucking into my sandwiches, across the table my dining companion was www.regionalmagazine.co.uk

Lavishly filled Afternoon tea for one, including with melted brie and coffee, £7.50 (£14 for two people) succulent turkey breast, Turkey and brie panini, £4.95 it was a truly indulgent Tea, £1.20 lunchtime treat. The afternoon tea sweet selection was just as impressive, with a beautiful strawberry cheesecake – featuring a biscuit base topped generously with a light mousse – a scone served with strawberry jam and clotted cream and a shortbread biscuit dipped in chocolate. Feeling generous, I shared the sweet treats with my companion and he was equally complimentary. Ward’s menu is extensive; as well as the huge variety of sandwiches and cakes, there are jacket potatoes, salads, quiches and omelettes available. While popular options like their Sunday roasts and legendary meat and potato pies will always have a place on the menu, Sue says they’re thinking of changing things up a bit. “We’re looking at doing a world-wide theme, such as a Greek dish one day and Mexican another. It’s important to keep things fresh and try to surprise people. We tried the Moroccan lamb as a new dish and it’s really popular now.” As well as cooking for their customers, Ward’s has all the tools you need to make the most of what’s left of the summer. Try a wood burning or gas barbecue, or one of their Kadai barbecue fire bowls – ideal for alfresco cooking and socialising. Ward’s have also recently added Little Cupcakes to their children’s range. These baby clothes are made from the finest cotton and are beautifully packaged to look like cupcakes – a very special gift for any new arrival. GCSE student Molly Pick describes how the prospect of the new school year is filling her with a mixture of excitement and trepidation.
I
n September I will be entering Year 11 at Lady Manners School, and I am all too aware of the importance of this year. Throughout the year, I will be sitting numerous controlled assessments for my chosen subjects, before sitting final examinations in May. It’s what everything over the last few years has been leading up to. Since I was in primary school, teachers have been drilling into our heads the importance of these examinations, so it can be hard not to feel pressure, especially when it is right around the corner. For anyone who doesn’t know, or has forgotten what it is like to start a new school year, I usually have a wide mix of emotions. There’s the excitement of reuniting with friends that you haven’t seen in months, the sadness of summer being over, and the daunting prospect of starting new classes with new teachers that you haven’t met before. In September, it often seems difficult to look ahead to a time that you are going to finish that year. It just seems like you are going to be there forever. It’s like standing at the foot of a very large mountain; you can’t see the top yet, although you know it’s there, and you know that at some point eventually you will have to reach the summit, but you almost feel like you’ll never be able to reach it. People sometimes call this muddled mess of emotions the back to school blues. When I was a little younger, in years 7 and 8, I used to get really nervous about starting back at school. It felt like I had been away from school and everything to do with school for so long, and that when I got there on the first day, it would be like starting a new school all over again. But it never was. Usually, it would feel slightly different to the year before – academic-wise – as the work would get more challenging and demanding, but I still knew everybody, so it wasn’t like starting completely afresh. Often, if I have something happening the next day that I am nervous or anxious about, I’ll spend hours thinking up all of the possible different outcomes that I can imagine. Then, when I get there, it’s never like any of the outcomes that I originally imagined. I always imagine that when I see friends for the first time in weeks it will be awkward and that we will have nothing to say to each other, but usually it isn’t – I just feel excited to finally be seeing them again. At the beginning of year 10, it felt a lot less like it had done in previous years. It just felt like a continuation of the previous year, like we had never really left, but there was the obvious pressure from many of our teachers as we began our GCSE courses. It is often hard to get back into the routine of things after the summer holiday. I seem to retain things I have learnt much better in some classes than others, so in some classes it feels like a mad panic to try and remember everything that I was taught the previous year. When it was time to choose what options I wanted to take for my GCSEs, I had a lot of difficulty deciding. There were too many things that I wanted to do and, since I didn’t really know what I wanted to do in the future, I just chose subjects that I was enjoying at the time. I did have to sacrifice a few subjects that I really
enjoyed, but I think I chose the right ones because, for the most part, I do enjoy school. When we chose our options, it was only half way through year 9 and I felt rather young and inexperienced to be making those kinds of decisions, as GCSEs effect the rest of your life. I have thought about what I might like to do after school, but I keep changing my mind. I would like to pursue a career in either film or publishing because I love books and writing and creating characters and stories. I’m not sure what I want to study at university but I am planning to go. At school there is help available, and there are several websites we have been shown that can help us choose career paths and give detailed information on a wide range of jobs that we are interested in. At the end of year 11, I’m not really leaving school because I plan to return to Lady Manners for sixth form. However, some of my friends are planning to attend other sixth forms, colleges or apprenticeships, so it will be sad to see them leave. I find it quite difficult to imagine finishing year 11 at the moment; I don’t really know what it is going to feel like until it happens, because things like that don’t usually happen exactly the way that you imagine. In year 11, I think you feel more responsible for your learning and homework. You have to make sure that you are learning the information in lessons as you go along. If you do not retain it, when it comes time to revise for tests, you have a lot of information to go over and learn in a seemingly short period of time. My favourite parts of school are being around my friends every day and the various sporting events that we have in the summer. Although, I do really like it in lessons if we are doing a topic I enjoy because it just makes the lesson so much easier if you like what you are doing. Even though there are a lot of good parts to school, there are also some bad ones. I really don’t like the pressure of exams. If it was just a question paper, it wouldn’t be so bad, but I think the pressure that is put on you to do well and achieve your target marks make them much worse and a lot more stressful. Sometimes, when you are in the exam it can be hard to think of answers to questions that you know you know because of the atmosphere and pressures, and then when you walk out of the classroom and think about it, you all of a sudden know the answer to the question, or realise that you answered a question wrong, which can be infuriating. One of my favourite school moments happened just a few weeks’ ago. I’ve been a member of the athletics team since year 8 and my favourite activities are the 100m sprint and the long jump. Sadly, we’re not allowed to be in the team in year 11 as we’re told it will distract us from our GCSEs, and many of the exams take place during competition season, so we decided to have a group photo after our last tournament. We all clambered onto the high jump mat but none of us could stand up properly and we were all falling over each other. It was a bittersweet moment as we were having so much fun but we knew it would be the last time we were all together as a team. That photo will help me remember all the good times we had together.

At the double
Once the heart of the coalmining industry, the villages of Kiveton and Wales are now very much forward-thinking and a great alternative to the city centre. Phoebe Seymour looks at what’s on offer.
L
ike salt and pepper or Ant and Dec, one cannot talk about Kiveton (or Kiveton Park, as it is more formally known) without mentioning neighbouring village Wales. The two villages were once the industrial powerhouses responsible for much of the coal in Britain with a mining history that dates all the way back to the 16th century. Kiveton’s industrial history also has strong links with cricket and football. Kiveton Park Colliery Cricket Club was formed in 1879 and has been a member of the Bassetlaw and District Cricket League since 1904. Kiveton Park Football Club started around the same time in 1892 and the club has played in the FA Cup on numerous occasions. The small village is also a hothouse for a number of notable figures in football, as it is the birthplace of football manager Herbert Chapman, who is said to be the man who made Arsenal Football Club what it is today, and his brother Harry, who went on to play for Sheffield Wednesday in the early 1900s. These days, the long history of these quaint villages is evident in the pit winding wheel based at the old Waleswood colliery, the gothic clock tower of the old colliery offices and the Elizabethanstyle buildings, which can be identified by their white walls and

black wooden beams. Kiveton Park railway station, built in 1849, is both a historic site and another way to reach Kiveton and Wales from both Sheffield and Rotherham. Like any great country settlement, it’s an attractive destination for pub-goers, with an ale trail that includes The Lord Conyer’s Hotel, The Forge and The Waleswood. All that pub-trekking can work up a hunger and there are a number of restaurants to choose from along Wales Road, as well as a number of cafes and coffee shops in the area. If you’d rather get active, the surrounding areas of Kiveton and Wales offer much more than football and cricket, with nearby Rother Valley Country Park providing a number of sports including golf and water sports. If it’s a new outfit for a special occasion you’re after, there are a number of independent boutiques, bridal stores and even wedding services such as florists and transport companies. So whether you want to immerse yourself in an area steeped in history, get a bite to eat, buy a unique dress or soak up the sun whilst getting involved in some summer sports, Kiveton and Wales is a great escape from the hustle and bustle of the city centre. www.regionalmagazine.co.uk

Wales Jubilee Sports & Social Club When Gary took over the Wales Jubilee Sports and Social Club, they only had 130 members. Two years on, this has risen to a whopping 410 members. Rother Valley Country Park The idyllic Rother Valley Country Park is a great place to enjoy the outdoors this summer with plenty of events and activities to watch or take part in. Torrential downpour can’t dampen community spirit When the heavens opened at a small charity fundraiser, organiser Donna Pyne’s heart sank thinking all her hard work in organising the street party and BBQ would be washed away. But it would take more than a downpour to dishearten the 50-plus revellers that braved the weather and the event raised just under £500. This brings the total that Donna has raised through various charity events to almost £3,000. Richmond-based Donna was inspired to raise funds for Cancer Research and St Luke’s hospice after losing close friend and neighbour Betty Wright to cancer and seeing many friends and family touched by the disease – even her own mum suffered breast cancer but thankfully survived. Betty was cared for at St Luke’s until she lost her battle. Donna’s next challenge is the St Luke’s Night Strider on Saturday 17 October. Sheffield’s first night-time walk will see thousands of people take to the streets for a half marathon or 10k through the city centre. For more information visit www.stlukeshospice.org.uk/events.

You’ll be greeted with a smile at Woodbrook, but the wind can play havoc with your round
A sense of history Just outside Dublin you’ll find stunning links courses steeped in tradition that offer a challenge to all types of golfer. John Murphy put them to the test.
O
ne of the great pleasures of visiting older, well-established golf clubs is absorbing the sense of history that pervades both clubhouse and course. One perfect example of this is Woodbrook Golf Club just outside Dublin. Black and white framed photographs of star golfers from a bygone era line the corridors: there’s Dai Rees playing at Woodbrook, Peter Thompson, Max Faulkener, Brian Barnes, Neil Coles and many more. The sense of tradition extends to the grand clubhouse too, where the course director mentions with a smile to a visitor that the rule for adults is the same as it is for juniors – no hats in the clubhouse please. His charming Irish delivery means both official and visitor laugh and share a drink. At Woodbrook the sense of eccentric history is reinforced by the actual design of the clubhouse – it was formerly a cricket pavilion and bears testimony to the course’s founder Sir Stanley Cochrane’s great love of the sport. A cricket bell, which tolled at the start and finish of play, now hangs in the bar. The course is very special. It is situated on an oasis of land with fantastic views of the Irish Sea on one side and the green haze of the imposing Dublin and Wicklow mountains on the other. The first nine are away from the sea but the back nine play out along the striking coast-line of breakers and sand. As it is a flat course you know where you are playing to on just about every hole, which is a relief when compared to some more modern stadia courses. There is an impressive run of holes after the turn which stretch as far as you can see along the coast – yards of verdant green populated by flags swirling in the wind.

And being flat, the wind does have an impact on the course. When it blows from the north nine holes are affected, including three out of the last four. When it’s from the south five holes, including three tough par 5s on the back nine, become very tough long holes. A severe crosswind from the east will affect every hole and make Woodbrook’s unusual configuration of five par 3s and five par 5s an even harder course to master. Woodbrook is just ten miles from Dublin and well worth the short journey. Green fees range from €45 to €50, which represents excellent value to play on a course graced by the likes of Christy O’Connor Jnr who won the Irish Open there in 1975. ironically also a link to the famous Christy O’Connor golfing family, is the spectacular Royal Dublin Golf Club. Christy O’Connor Snr joined Royal Dublin in 1959 as club professional and is still associated with the club. His eagle-birdieeagle finish to win the Carroll’s International at Royal Dublin in 1966 still ranks as the finest finish to any Irish professional golf tournament. There is a plaque on the course to mark this achievement and the grand clubhouse has a special Christy O’Connor room to commemorate the famous Irish man’s prowess as a golfing legend, confirmed by his induction into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2009. The course was established 130 years ago on a spit of land, Bull Island in Dublin Bay, and is attached to the mainland by a couple of bridges and is designed very much in a traditional links style. The famous golf architect Harry Colt (who designed Sheffield’s Hallamshire course) was responsible for the design after the First World War and more recently Martin Hawtree undertook a major €4.5million re-design to adapt the course to the more modern game. This was completed in 2006. Four hundred yards were added to the par 72 course which now exceeds 7,269 yards and the greens were re-contoured to raise them and create run off areas. The changes have helped the course to be ranked 13 out of 58 True Irish Links as published in a recent survey and ensured that the Irish Amateur Open returned to the course. Again it is relatively flat and exposed to the vagaries of the wind with the majority of the holes being visible tee to green. It’s an enjoyable test of golf without being as intimidating as other links courses such as Ballybunnion or Lahinch. Green fees range from €75 to €150 depending on time of year but special rates are available. Check www.theroyaldublingolfclub.com for details. Another course to be enjoyed in the area is Wicklow, which is perched on a rugged cliff top with stunning views over the Irish Sea with Wicklow mountains forming a spectacular backdrop. Holes stretch around a relatively new clubhouse with each one presenting a unique challenge as the gradient of the cliffs mean there is

plenty of run on the ball and difficult angles to negotiate. The course was founded in 1904 and re-developed in 1991 as a par 71 with three par 5s and four par 3s. The signature hole is the daunting sixth where players are required to drive across the sea from a tee perched on a promontory across to the fairway beyond. Views are spectacular and golf could really be secondary to the fine walk. The clubhouse is very sociable and welcoming with a buzzing atmosphere and a strong social calendar. It’s situated only half an hour from Dublin so a trip is strongly recommended, especially with green fees at around €30. More details are available at www.wicklowgolfclub.ie. If Dublin is not your destination then the Glenview Hotel in Delgany, Glen of The Downs, is an excellent base from where the three courses and others can be explored along with the stunning scenery of the Glen and the Wicklow mountains. On the other hand a golfing trip in the Wicklow area can easily be combined with a break in the capital. Dublin has many attractions such as tours of the Guinness Brewery and Jamesons Distillery. One new attraction is the Teeling Whiskey Distillery in the Newmarket area. It is the first distillery to be opened in Dublin in 125 years and is the only operational one in the city. The business specialises in the release of small batch, imaginatively created, craft whiskies which can be sampled on highly informative tours starting at €14 to include tastings and cocktails. Turning over a new leaf Alfa Romeo has unveiled a serious contender to the BMW 3-Series, Audi A4 and Mercedes-Benz C-Class – and boy does it look good. The Giulia, the long-awaited successor to the 159, is dripping with Italian style and elegance but has lots more to make you sit up and take note. For a start, it’s rear-wheel drive (all-wheel drive will also be available) with perfect 50/50 weight distribution; a strong indication that it will drive as good as it looks. This is aided by the use of carbon fibre, aluminium and plastic, giving the car an extraordinary weight-to-power ratio. The Giulia will launch in 2016 with the flagship Quadrifoglio version, a 510hp behemoth which utilises a state-of-the-art six cylinder turbo petrol engine with Ferrari-inspired technologies. A new class of MINI Although larger than its predecessor, the biggest changes to the new MINI Clubman have been made under the bonnet with the introduction of new TwinPower Turbo Technology engines. Three units will be available from launch, the MINI Cooper Clubman, the MINI Cooper D Clubman and the MINI Cooper S Clubman, with prices starting from £19,995. A choice of two petrol engines with three or four cylinders will be offered alongside a four-cylinder diesel. Six-speed manual transmissions will be offered as standard although a new eight-speed Steptronic transmission will be available as an option on the MINI Cooper D and MINI Cooper S Clubman. All cars will come with MINI’s highly acclaimed Navigation System as standard, exemplifying the high levels of equipment across the range.

Mercedes-Benz’s change of direction for it’s A-Class proved to be a gamble worth taking – and now they’ve unveiled a new version of the sporty hatchback. Lookswise you’ll be hard pushed to notice any difference; it’s inside where the changes have been made. The biggest improvement is perhaps the introduction of DYNAMIC SELECT, which allows the driver to change the car’s characteristics at the touch of a button. The engine, transmission, suspension, steering and air conditioning are all tuned to fit with one of the selected driving modes – Comfort, Sport, Eco and Individual. There’ll be four petrol engines and four diesel engines, the latter of which includes a new 109hp A180 d with CO2 emissions of just 89g/km. If performance is more your thing, there’ll also be a 381hp Mercedes-AMG A45 4MATIC – the world’s most powerful compact sports model.
Brand icon The Mazda MX-5 has long been considered one of the best – if not the best – value-for-money roadsters on the market. And now it just got even better. The all-new model, characterised by rearwheel drive, perfect 50/50 weight distribution and more comfort and technology than ever before, was launched at the recent Goodwood Festival of Speed. It’s shorter, lower and wider than its predecessor as well as lighter. Two SKY ACTIV-G petrol engines – a 1.5-litre 131ps and 2.0-litre 160ps – will be available along with five trim levels. All models feature LED headlights, alloy wheels and a six-speed manual gearbox.
